There is a reason I left Los Angeles.
As long as I can recall living in LA, every time you would drive past a Home Depot or a similar store, there would be a crowd of illegal immigrants who were waiting for work.
You do feel bad for these people. Many of them have crossed the border in an attempt to seek work and send remittances back home, and many of them are also on welfare. It turns out that an enormous number of people who come across the border end up engaging in things that leech off of the taxpayer dime; they end up as a net cost to the taxpayer. They take part in the public education system if they have kids who they bring across the border; they end up using medical services.
But the issue is this: It’s not about whether these people are nice or mean, whether they are good or bad.
They have broken the law. They crossed the border illegally. And that is just the ones who otherwise are law-abiding.
And then there are a bunch of people who are not otherwise law-abiding. There are many people in Southern California or occupying jails in Southern California who committed crimes in addition to illegal immigration. 
Federal law says you are not allowed to cross the American border without your papers, and that if you overstay your visa, even if you come across the border legally with a visa, then you are also here illegally and you ought to be deported.
Enforcing that law should not be controversial. There is a reason countries have borders, but the United States, for as long as I can recall, simply did not enforce the law properly. That was particularly true under Joe Biden.

When Donald Trump came into office in 2016, he pledged to do something about illegal immigration. And he did. The rate of border crossing plummeted dramatically during Donald Trump&#8217;s first term.
Then Joe Biden came in and opened the border wide to the tune of at least 10 million people crossing the border, either by claiming asylum falsely or by simply crossing illegally between ports of entry or by overstaying visas.
Donald Trump has now come into office for the second time, pledging to stop illegal immigration. He has already successfully closed the southern border. And now he is activating Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), to implement the law; to find people who are in the interior of the country illegally and to remove them.
This should not be controversial. Just because elected officials haven&#8217;t enforced the law properly for decades, it does not mean that enforcing the law now should be controversial.
Late last week, there were some immigration enforcement operations that happened in Southern California. According to <a href="https://www.wsj.com/us-news/los-angeles-protests-national-guard-015b5bd3">The Wall Street Journal</a>:
<blockquote>The first demonstrations began Friday in Los Angeles, when residents reacted to federal agents engaged in what appeared to be an immigration enforcement operation. Homeland Security spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin said that some 800 protesters surrounded and breached a federal law-enforcement building in Los Angeles. 
Protests continued throughout the weekend, with a particularly tense standoff occurring Sunday evening in downtown Los Angeles. California Highway Patrol officers used flash-bang stun grenades and tactical positioning to push protesters off Highway 101. Demonstrators threw tree branches, scooters and fireworks from a freeway overpass onto police vehicles, and some protesters set fire to at least five Waymo driverless taxis.  </blockquote>
The Journal <a href="https://www.wsj.com/us-news/california-protesters-clash-with-federal-agents-for-a-second-day-e23066bb?gaa_at=eafs&amp;gaa_n=ASWzDAhBtQDc_BPowgGspZYa2AEmKvp6M2nag8T46Lb2x4X7Gc8-Je8Q2abS0t-7WtE%3D&amp;gaa_ts=68473754&amp;gaa_sig=VbjeylgUtsk49Bwgg6nfs-yUFWEjXNCJBw_t63GPSyAC4ZOqP7mtiFvhYHZmn2lacqcNop981VLhH2Qn1iO2ow%3D%3D">added</a>:
<blockquote>Protesters also gathered outside a federal detention center in downtown Los Angeles Saturday night and were pushed back by law enforcement using tear gas and flash bangs, according to local news footage. Los Angeles police declared an unlawful assembly in the area and detained multiple people.</blockquote>
Things got incredibly fraught. That is not a giant shock. What is amazing, however, is that people believe the United States is so lawless that when federal agents show up to arrest people for being in the country illegally, we end up with hundreds of protesters, many of whom end up assaulting police officers, ICE agents, participating in acts of criminality, rioting, and burning things.
L.A. has become an incredibly lawless place. It&#8217;s one of the reasons my family and I moved during the BLM riots, in which the city of Los Angeles essentially told the cops to stand down and allow people to riot and destroy whatever they could, burning cop cars along the way.
We lived in a fairly decent area of L.A., and I could hear the helicopters above our home and gunshots. I can promise you, in the aftermath of what&#8217;s going on right now, there will be many people who look at California and say, “Why in the hell am I paying exorbitant taxes in order to live in a place that allowed every area around L.A. to burn just a few months ago, and now is allowing parts of L.A. to burn in order to protect people who came to the country illegally in the first place?”
It&#8217;s total insanity. This is essentially what my new book, “<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Lions-Scavengers-Story-America-Critics/dp/1668097885">Lions and Scavengers</a>,” is about. There are two groups of people in the United States and across the West: people who wish to build institutions and create successful operating systems, and then people who wish to tear them down.
You look at the protesters and you see many of them flying Mexican flags as well as Palestinian flags (and it&#8217;s a good indicator that you&#8217;re on the wrong side of any protests if you&#8217;re the one flying a Palestinian flag). These protesters were roaming around suggesting they need to be in the United States while flying the Mexican flag.
That&#8217;s an amazing thing because they&#8217;re not saying Mexico and the United States are in solidarity. Precisely the opposite. They are saying they came to the United States as a quasi-invading force and they&#8217;ve come here as refugees from Mexico, and therefore left Mexico for a reason.
This would be the equivalent of Cuban migrants attempting to escape Cuba, who then fly the Cuban flag while attempting to stop ICE officers. It would be bizarre. 
Cubans coming to the United States from Cuba generally don&#8217;t fly the flag of the country that oppressed them and forced them to leave. If they are flying that flag it’s to overthrow the government of Cuba.
But in LA, you have a bunch of people flying Mexican flags, not because they wish to change the government of Mexico, or because they believe in the solidarity between the United States and Mexico, but because many of them believe that this entire area is Aztalan: It doesn&#8217;t belong to the American people or the American government.
The Left thinks all of this is okay. When you have the government of Los Angeles not doing enough to shut all of this down, it demonstrates the Democrats&#8217; priorities.

There&#8217;s a long heritage for all of this in the Democratic Party, going back to Barack Obama winking and nodding at the Ferguson riots of 2014. We&#8217;ve had a dozen years of this kind of garbage and yet Democrats still don&#8217;t seem to get it. They are defending the rioters and the protesters and the people who are engaging in violence.
If anyone actually wonders why President Trump is president — this is why.

One of the groups organizing the anti-ICE protests in Los Angeles advocates for Mexico to reconquer much of the American Southwest, arguing that the United States is an illegitimate colonialist power.
Centro CSO, an organization that <a href="https://www.instagram.com/centrocso/?hl=en">pushes</a> for the Mexican people to have “self-determination” in America’s southwestern states, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/events/1420030845819289/?acontext=%7B%22event_action_history%22%3A%5B%7B%22surface%22%3A%22external_search_engine%22%7D%2C%7B%22mechanism%22%3A%22attachment%22%2C%22surface%22%3A%22newsfeed%22%7D%5D%2C%22ref_notif_type%22%3Anull%7D">recruited</a> its followers to join the Sunday protests as violence escalated against federal law enforcement. The group marched with a banner that read “Fight Trump,” and reposted an image of an ICE vehicle on social media, particularly flagging that car’s license plate.
The group&#8217;s rallying call is the flag of <a href="https://www.tshaonline.org/handbook/entries/aztlan#:~:text=Aztl%C3%A1n%2C%20the%20name%20of%20the,during%20the%201970s%20Chicano%20movement.">Aztlán</a>, a mythical homeland of the Aztecs in the southwestern United States, which was ruled by Mexico prior to the Mexican American War and the independence of Texas. The symbol has been used by Mexican nationalists who claim that America has no legitimate claim to states, including Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, and California.
An individual associated with the organization spoke at the rally and appeared to threaten violence against law enforcement. “They’re going to find out that we don’t play games out here,” Sammy Carrera said. “We’re no longer going to be on the defense, we’re going to take the fight to them,” he said of ICE agents in a <a href="https://www.instagram.com/reel/DKqJodkySY-/?igsh=d3NxdG1zdTdxb3My">video</a> that was posted by a communist organization.
Centro CSO was not the only group involved in organizing the anti-ICE protests, which began on Friday after the federal agency <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/gang-members-sex-offenders-and-more-heres-who-ice-actually-picked-up-during-la-raids">arrested</a> gang members and sex offenders, that argues the United States should be conquered by Mexico.

Another ethnic separatist group that <a href="https://www.facebook.com/udblosangeles/videos/uni%C3%B3n-del-barrio-and-community-self-defense-coalition-of-la-emergency-presa-conf/1799740457307503/">joined</a> the protest effort is Unión del Barrio, which <a href="https://uniondelbarrio.org/main/4-2/struggle/border-violence-migration/">calls</a> the United States an “illegal settler nation” and agitates on behalf of “<a href="https://uniondelbarrio.org/eng/">la raza</a>,” or, the race.
The “revolutionary” organization similarly <a href="https://uniondelbarrio.org/main/4-2/about-udb/political-program/who-we-are/i-from-alaska-to-chile-we-are-one-people-without-borders/">invokes the myth</a> of Aztlán, also referring to the American southwest as occupied Mexico. Unión del Barrio considers itself an international racial organization that <a href="https://uniondelbarrio.org/main/4-2/about-udb/political-program/who-we-are/ii-this-is-nuestra-america-we-are-indigenous-nations/">fights against</a> “European colonialism&#8221; and the “Anglo settler.”
“We hold that the struggle of La Raza in Aztlan/México Ocupado is historically and geographically defined as an indigenous and Mexicano anti-colonial fight for land and socialism,” the group says. Unión del Barrio calls for international racial unity to overthrow “European colonialism” and “neocolonialists” among the “United States white nationalist population.”
“The principled unification of our forces throughout Nuestra América will be necessary to overturn all manifestations of colonial, imperialist, and neoliberal oppression,” it goes on to say.
One of the organization’s <a href="https://www.democracynow.org/2025/6/9/los_angeles_protests_immigration_ice_raids?jwsource=cl">community organizers</a> is Ron Gochez, a teacher in the Los Angeles Unified School District, who charged that “frail racist white people” want to keep Hispanics out of the United States.

The efforts of the two extreme organizations were bolstered by the <a href="https://www.instagram.com/communityselfdefensecoalition/?hl=en">Community Self Defense Coalition</a>, which <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/DKqVkcVx5jS/?igsh=bmwxMGtlOWltdHd6">gave out</a> helmets, respirators, goggles, and masks to protesters. Large groups of protesters refused to disperse as police used tear gas and other non-lethal devices to break up illegal gatherings.

The organization takes to social media to broadcast the location of ICE agents and works with Unión del Barrio to create and disseminate a <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/DIR-96WTX7r/?igsh=bjJ4OHpzc2hycGIx">guide</a> on how to identify the vehicles used by ICE.
The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights, which The Daily Wire previously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/kamala-says-shell-enforce-border-laws-her-admin-gave-1-2-million-to-group-that-wants-to-end-them">reported</a> received funding from the Department of Homeland Security under the Biden administration, was also <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/06/08/us-news/some-la-migrant-protests-fueled-by-taxpayer-funded-group-with-dem-ties-another-with-ccp-link/">involved</a> in the Los Angeles protests. The Trump administration froze funding to the group, which worked to “dismantle the U.S. immigration enforcement system” all while it raked in millions of dollars from the Biden administration.
Marxist organizations also joined in the protests against ICE. The protests were <a href="https://www.facebook.com/RefuseFascismLA/">advertised</a> by Refuse Fascism Los Angeles, a far-left organization that hands out propaganda created by the RevCom, the Revolutionary Communist Party. The two groups <a href="https://revcom.us/en/refuse-fascism-emergency-assembliesorganize-strategize-mobilize-demand-trump-fascist-regime-must-go">collaborate</a> as they agitate against what they call the “Trump fascist regime.” The Revolutionary Communist Party advocates for “world revolution and the ultimate aim of communism.”
The Party for Socialism and Liberation, another <a href="https://pslweb.org/program/">Marxist organization</a>, also encouraged people to “<a href="https://x.com/pslnational/status/1931763397441298929">take to the streets</a>” to protest in Los Angeles and <a href="https://x.com/pslnational/status/1931153408326861006">join</a> the march.

The Trump administration deployed between 500 and 700 U.S. Marines to Los Angeles on Monday to assist the National Guard and local law enforcement as anti-ICE riots blew up in part of the city over the weekend.
CNN <a href="https://www.cnn.com/us/live-news/la-protests-ice-raids-trump-06-09-25#cmbpf2l0s00003b6mldlq5r1h">reported</a> that 500 Marines from the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in California were mobilized, while ABC News <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/US/live-updates/la-immigration-protests-live-updates-trump-deploys-2000/?id=122621279&amp;entryId=122667907">reported</a> that 700 Marines from the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines at Twentynine Palms, California, were sent into the city.
Just before the Marines&#8217; deployment was reported, Trump told ABC News, &#8220;We’ll see what happens&#8221; when asked about the possibility of sending them to L.A.
&#8220;I mean, I think we have it very well under control,&#8221; Trump said. &#8220;I think it would have been a very bad situation. It was heading in the wrong direction. It&#8217;s now heading in the right direction.&#8221;
On Saturday, Trump deployed the National Guard to the city, angering Democratic leaders such as Gov. Gavin Newsom and L.A. Mayor Karen Bass. Trump slammed Newsom and Bass for allowing the anti-ICE protests to turn into riots as federal, state, and local law enforcement officers were attacked by agitators slinging rocks and cement and shooting fireworks at them.
One person told CNN that the Marines are expected to relieve some of the 2,000 National Guard troops who have been in the city for two days now. Of the 2,000 National Guardsmen in L.A., only around 300 have been deployed to the streets. According to CNN, Defense Department lawyers are finalizing use-of-force guidelines for the Marines.

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said on Saturday that &#8220;active duty Marines at Camp Pendleton&#8221; were standing ready on &#8220;high alert&#8221; in case of escalating violence. California filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration on Monday, alleging the president &#8220;is trying to manufacture chaos and crisis&#8221; after he deployed 2,000 National Guard troops to quell anti-ICE riots in Los Angeles over the weekend.
The lawsuit argues that President Donald Trump unconstitutionally called in the National Guard and infringed on Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom&#8217;s role without there being a clear threat of &#8220;invasion&#8221; or &#8220;rebellion,&#8221; The Washington Post <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2025/06/09/california-newsom-trump-lawsuit-national-guard/">reported</a>. Trump deployed the National Guard, a power typically exercised by governors, on Saturday as anti-ICE protests turned into riots and agitators attacked federal, state, and local law enforcement and set fire to cars in the street.
“Let me be clear: There is no invasion. There is no rebellion,” California Democratic Attorney General Rob Bonta said. “The President is trying to manufacture chaos and crisis on the ground for his own political ends.”
Newsom <a href="https://x.com/GavinNewsom/status/1932147258033934643">added</a>, &#8220;This is a manufactured crisis. He is creating fear and terror to take over a state militia and violate the U.S. constitution. The illegal order he signed could allow him to send the military into ANY STATE HE WISHES. Every governor &#8212; red or blue &#8212; should reject this outrageous overreach. There’s a lot of hyperbole out there. This isn’t that. This is an unmistakable step toward authoritarianism that threatens the foundation of our republic. We cannot let it stand.&#8221;

In his order to deploy the National Guard, Trump <a href="https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/10/12406">cited</a> U.S. Code Title 10, Section 12406, which allows the president to call in the National Guard under invasion from a foreign nation, a rebellion &#8220;or danger of rebellion&#8221; against the U.S. government, or if &#8220;the President is unable with the regular forces to execute the laws of the United States.&#8221; The statute has not faced much judicial scrutiny, according to Bonta, but he said he feels confident that the courts will side with California.
Trump could also point to the Insurrection Act of 1807, which allows the president to federalize the National Guard and deploy the U.S. military to quell domestic disorder or violence. Asked about invoking the Insurrection Act on Sunday, Trump <a href="https://www.c-span.org/program/white-house-event/president-trump-speaks-to-reporters-in-morristown-new-jersey/660975">replied</a>, &#8220;It depends on whether or not there&#8217;s an insurrection.&#8221; At the time, he said that the current situation didn&#8217;t amount to an insurrection, adding, &#8220;But you have violent people and we&#8217;re not going to let them get away with it.&#8221;

President Donald Trump told reporters on Monday that it would be &#8220;great&#8221; if his border czar, Tom Homan, arrested California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom over the anti-ICE riots that hit Los Angeles County over the weekend.
Homan threatened Newsom and L.A. Mayor Karen Bass with arrest on Sunday if they “cross[ed]” the line&#8221; and impeded federal agents from arresting illegal immigrants. Asked about Homan&#8217;s comments, Trump said, &#8220;I would do it if I were Tom. I think it&#8217;s great. Gavin likes the publicity, but I think it would be a great thing.&#8221;
&#8220;He’s done a terrible job,&#8221; the president added of Newsom. &#8220;Look, I like Gavin Newsom, he’s a nice guy, but he’s grossly incompetent.&#8221;

Why doesn’t he do that? He knows where to find me.”
“The hell are they doing? These guys need to grow up,” the governor continued. “They need to stop, and we need to push back. And I’m sorry to be so clear, but that kind of bloviating is exhausting. So, Tom, arrest me. Let’s go,” he added. &#8220;But you know what? Let your hands off 4-year-old girls that are trying to get educated. Let your hands off these poor people. They’re just trying to live their lives, man. Trying to live their lives, paying their taxes. Been here for 10 years. The fear, the horror.”
Homan appeared to back down from his threat on Monday morning, saying there was no discussion about arresting the governor.
“What we discussed was for those protesters that crossed the line … you can protest, you get your First Amendment rights, but when you cross that line, you put hands on an ICE officer or you destroy property or I’d say that you impede law enforcement, or you’re knowingly harboring and concealing an illegal alien, that’s a crime, and the Trump administration is not going to tolerate it,” Homan told &#8220;Fox &amp; Friends.&#8221;
“Then the reporter asked me, well, could Governor Newsom or Mayor Bass be arrested? I said, ‘Well no one’s above the law. If they cross the line and commit a crime, absolutely they can,’ so there was no discussion about arresting Newsom,” he added.

The governor said Trump’s move was “unconstitutional” and that the administration did not coordinate with his office before deploying the National Guard, a power typically exercised by governors.
Trump, however, could invoke the Insurrection Act of 1807, which allows the president to federalize the National Guard and deploy the U.S. military to quell domestic disorder or violence.

Even though he was technically correct, Governor Gavin Newsom&#8217;s (D-CA) latest attempt to fact-check conservatives — over a protest video that circulated via X — went sideways in a hurry.
The video in question was shared by a number of accounts and showed protesters surrounding several LAPD vehicles that had been damaged and set on fire.

Community notes clarified that the video was not from the recent confrontations between violent protesters and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. Rather, it was from the violent riots that took place in the aftermath of George Floyd&#8217;s death in May of 2020.
Both Newsom himself and his press office quickly capitalized on the error, responding to multiple accounts that shared the video and saying, &#8220;This video is from 2020,&#8221; or &#8220;FACT CHECK: This video is not from this year. Misinformation like this only adds to the chaos the Trump Administration is seeking. Check your sources before sharing info!&#8221;

An Australian journalist was struck by a rubber bullet fired by law enforcement during a live shot covering a violent anti-ICE protest in downtown Los Angeles on Sunday.
Lauren Tomasi of 9News Australia, a CNN affiliate, was conducting a live broadcast when she was struck with the non-lethal projectile.
Video of the Sunday afternoon incident shows Tomasi standing to the side of an intersection in downtown Los Angeles as armed police officers confronted protesters.
“After hours of standing off, this situation has now rapidly deteriorated, the LAPD moving in on horseback, firing rubber bullets at protesters, moving them on through the heart of LA,” Tomasi said moments before she was hit.
In the video, an outraged bystander can be heard yelling at officers, “You just shot the f***ing reporter!”
Tomasi shrieks and limps away after the impact, telling bystanders, “I’m good.”

The Australian journalist was left sore but not seriously injured, while her country&#8217;s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade issued a statement saying, &#8220;all journalists should be able to do their work safely,” <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/live/2025/06/09/us/la-protests-immigration-ice-trump">according</a> to The New York Times.
It remains unclear whether the officer had deliberately aimed at the journalist, and the LAPD stated to the Times that it did not have &#8220;any comment or statement on any specific incident pertaining to the protests.&#8221;
The LAPD did issue several “unlawful assembly” declarations over the weekend, warning media members to “please keep a safe distance from active operations.”

Rubber bullets have been regularly used by law enforcement for crowd control for years, but they can cause serious injury, as was the case for a British journalist <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/media/2025/jun/09/australian-reporter-shot-with-rubber-bullet-while-covering-anti-ice-protests-in-los-angeles">hospitalized</a> by a rubber bullet over the weekend.

President Donald Trump defended his decision to deploy 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles, saying on Monday that the city &#8220;would have been completely obliterated&#8221; without his action.
Trump said that California Gov. Gavin Newsom and L.A. Mayor Karen Bass should be thanking him, adding, &#8220;Instead, they choose to lie to the People of California and America by saying that we weren’t needed, and that these are &#8216;peaceful protests.'&#8221; The president argued that the footage of the anti-ICE riots that broke out in L.A. over the weekend &#8220;tells you all you have to know.&#8221;

Trump has not yet officially invoked the Insurrection Act, and has ordered Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, and Attorney General Pam Bondi &#8220;to take all such action necessary&#8221; to address the riots.
Mayor Bass also condemned Trump&#8217;s move, arguing that it was &#8220;about another agenda&#8221; and &#8220;not about public safety.&#8221;

The decision came after rioters <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-vows-to-liberate-los-angeles-shut-down-migrant-riots-and-insurrectionist-mobs?topStoryPosition=undefined&amp;author=Leif+Le+Mahieu&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=0&amp;row=1&amp;rowHeadline=Top+Stories&amp;rowType=Top+Stories&amp;title=Trump+Vows+To+‘Liberate+Los+Angeles%2C’+Shut+Down+‘Migrant+Riots’+And+‘Insurrectionist+Mobs’">torched vehicles</a> and threw objects at federal officials and police officers at multiple protests in L.A. County. 
In a statement explaining its withdrawal, the city said that it had offered “access to clean accommodations, on-call medical care, family visitation, and legal counsel” to those arrested by federal immigration authorities as a result of a 2007 contract signed with ICE and Homeland Security. 
But it said it was ending the deal because of the &#8220;public perception&#8221; of ICE and potential dangers to local residents and businesses from rioters.
“Nevertheless, despite the transparency and safeguards the City has upheld, the City recognizes that public perception of the ICE contract — no matter how limited or carefully managed, no matter the good — has become divisive,” the city said in a <a href="https://www.glendaleca.gov/Home/Components/News/News/9293/16">statement</a>. “And while opinions on this issue may vary—the decision to terminate this contract is not politically driven. It is rooted in what this City stands for—public safety, local accountability, and trust.”
The city added that the decision was made in part to ensure that its “residents and businesses do not suffer the consequences of the unruly and unlawful behavior of others.”
Glendale’s decision to end its ICE contract comes just days after the Los Angeles Times published a <a href="https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2025-06-05/glendale-city-jail-ice-detainees-holding" target="_blank" rel="noopener">report</a> highlighting the agreement and quoting leftist activists who urged the partnership to end. They cited a California law passed in 2017 and signed by then-Governor Jerry Brown that prohibits law enforcement from using resources to assist federal immigration authorities in immigration enforcement. Standing contracts, such as the one Glendale had with ICE, were exempted. 
Parts of Los Angeles County were rocked with violence on Saturday and Sunday after protests broke out over ICE operations in the area that began on Friday. On Monday, the Los Angeles Police Department <a href="https://ktla.com/news/local-news/42-arrested-5-lapd-officers-hurt-in-immigration-protest-unrest/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> that 42 people had been arrested on a variety of charges, from assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, looting, and arson. 
&#8220;This violence that I&#8217;ve seen is disgusting,&#8221; <a href="https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/la-protests-arrests/3718945/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell on Sunday. &#8220;It&#8217;s escalated now. What we saw the first night was bad. What we&#8217;ve seen subsequent to that is getting increasingly worse and more violent.&#8221;

The American autonomous driving technology company Waymo has suspended service in downtown Los Angeles after several of its robotaxis were set on fire by anti-ICE activists over the weekend.
At least five Waymo vehicles were set ablaze on Sunday, prompting the company to remove its vehicles from the downtown Los Angeles area and suspend service, <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/conormurray/2025/06/09/los-angeles-protests-live-updates--27-people-arrested-as-lapd-declares-unlawful-assembly-in-some-areas/">Forbes</a> reported.
“To our media partners, demonstrators and others who may enter the area of Los Angeles St, North of Arcadia and South of Alameda: Burning lithium-ion batteries release toxic gases, including hydrogen fluoride, posing risks to responders and those nearby. Please avoid the area,” the LAPD warned on X on Sunday.

After anti-ICE activists blocked the 101 Freeway on Sunday afternoon, some approached “five Waymo taxis lined up on Los Angeles Street between Arcadia and Alameda streets around 5 p.m.,” the Los Angeles Times <a href="https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2025-06-08/waymo-vehicles-set-on-fire-protesters-police-clash">reported</a>. “Tires were slashed, windows smashed, and anti-ICE messages spray-painted over the self-driving taxis &#8230; Protesters swarmed around the vehicles, tearing the doors off and stomping on the windshields. One man with a mask over his face smashed car windows with a skateboard. Another appeared to use a makeshift flamethrower to set the interior of a car ablaze.”

Waymo was originally the Google Self-Driving Project, a research and development effort within Google X.  In 2016, the project was rebranded as Waymo and moved under Alphabet, Google&#8217;s parent company.

California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom condemned the Trump administration on Sunday and dared border czar Tom Homan to arrest him amid the anti-ICE riots in Los Angeles County.
Trump drew the ire of California Democrats, such as Newsom and L.A. Mayor Karen Bass, after he deployed the National Guard to shut down the riots that <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/national-guard-rolls-into-los-angeles-after-days-of-anti-ice-riots">broke out</a> over the weekend. Homan then warned Newsom and Bass against impeding federal law enforcement officers and threatened them with arrest if they &#8220;cross[ed]&#8221; the line.&#8221; The California governor shot back, imploring the Trump administration to keep their &#8220;hands off these poor people&#8221; who are &#8220;just trying to live their lives.&#8221;
&#8220;He’s a tough guy. Why doesn’t he do that? He knows where to find me,” Newsom said of Homan in an interview with <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/immigration/californias-governor-unfazed-threats-arrest-trump-administratio-rcna211752">MSNBC</a>.
“The hell are they doing? These guys need to grow up,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;They need to stop, and we need to push back. And I’m sorry to be so clear, but that kind of bloviating is exhausting. So, Tom, arrest me. Let’s go,” he added.
“But you know what? Let your hands off 4-year-old girls that are trying to get educated. Let your hands off these poor people. They’re just trying to live their lives, man,&#8221; Newsom <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/06/09/us-news/gov-newsom-adds-fuel-to-fire-dares-trumps-border-czar-tom-homan-to-arrest-him-amid-violent-anti-ice-riots/">added</a>. &#8220;Trying to live their lives, paying their taxes. Been here for 10 years. The fear, the horror.”
Over the weekend, federal immigration agents, along with state and local law enforcement officers, were attacked by rioters hurling rocks, concrete, and &#8220;commercial grade fireworks&#8221; — actions that LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell said could have killed the police officers. At least one Customs and Border Protection agent was injured after rioters <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/kill-ice-foreign-flags-and-fires-sweep-la-as-riots-erupt-against-immigration-enforcement?author=Tim+Pearce&amp;category=undefined&amp;elementPosition=11&amp;row=3&amp;rowHeadline=Latest+News&amp;rowType=Vertical+Carousel&amp;title=%E2%80%98Kill+ICE%E2%80%99%3A+Foreign+Flags+And+Fires+Sweep+LA+As+Riots+Erupt+Against+Immigration+Enforcement">pelted</a> his vehicle with rocks. Many of the rioters waved foreign flags and burned self-driving robotaxis in the street.
Homan responded to Newsom on Monday morning, <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/media/trump-border-czar-responds-newsoms-arrest-me-challenge-california-riots-over-ice-raids">telling</a> &#8220;Fox &amp; Friends&#8221; that &#8220;no one&#8217;s above the law,&#8221; but added that there was no discussion about arresting the governor.
&#8220;What we discussed was for those protesters that crossed the line … you can protest, you get your First Amendment rights, but when you cross that line, you put hands on an ICE officer or you destroy property or I&#8217;d say that you impede law enforcement, or you&#8217;re knowingly harboring and concealing an illegal alien, that&#8217;s a crime, and the Trump administration is not going to tolerate it,&#8221; Homan said.
&#8220;Then the reporter asked me, well, could Governor Newsom or Mayor Bass be arrested? I said, &#8216;Well no one&#8217;s above the law. If they cross the line and commit a crime, absolutely they can,&#8217; so there was no discussion about arresting Newsom,&#8221; he added.
Newsom <a href="https://thehill.com/regulation/court-battles/5339718-california-lawsuit-trump-national-guard/">said</a> that California would file a lawsuit against the Trump administration on Monday over the National Guard deployment to Los Angeles, arguing that Trump&#8217;s move is &#8220;unconstitutional.&#8221; Newsom stated that the Trump administration did not coordinate with his office on deploying 2,000 National Guard troops, despite Trump&#8217;s order claiming otherwise. Trump has not invoked the Insurrection Act of 1807, which allows the president to federalize the National Guard and deploy the U.S. military to quell domestic disorder or violence.
“We have no problem working collaboratively in a mutual aid system with local law enforcement. But there’s a protocol, there’s a process. He didn’t care about that. And the worst part, he completely lied,” Newsom added.
The Insurrection Act of 1807 was most recently <a href="https://apnews.com/article/insurrection-act-trump-troops-newsom-military-national-guard-a842f79e1c0e244039be274a6f266a7a">invoked</a> by President George H.W. Bush in 1992 to respond to the Rodney King riots in Los Angeles.
On Saturday, Newsom accused the Trump administration of deploying the National Guard because the White House wants &#8220;a spectacle.&#8221;
