A federal judge on Wednesday rejected Minnesota&#8217;s emergency attempt to force Texas to extradite an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/minnesota-ag-keith-ellison-sues-to-force-texas-to-extradite-ice-agent">accused</a> of shooting a Venezuelan man and lying about the incident, potentially clearing the way for the agent&#8217;s release from jail.
Christian Castro, 52, faces four counts of second-degree assault and one count of falsely reporting a crime in Minnesota over a January shooting during an immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis.
The judge denied Minnesota&#8217;s request for a temporary restraining order that would have prevented the Cameron County sheriff from releasing Castro and required Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott to sign an extradition warrant allowing Minnesota authorities to take custody of him.
Castro has been held in Texas since May. Under existing Texas law, a person jailed while awaiting extradition can be held for up to 90 days, meaning Castro could be released as soon as Thursday, <a href="https://apnews.com/article/minnesota-texas-ice-shooting-christian-castro-extradition-384843049feeba26fac6fc09412161ca?utm_source=app&amp;utm_medium=iOS_share&amp;utm_campaign=copy_link" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to The Associated Press.
Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison sued Abbott last week to compel Castro&#8217;s extradition and sought a temporary restraining order to prevent his release while the dispute played out.
Officials in Minnesota fear Castro is a flight risk, citing calls he has made from jail to a woman in Mexico in which he talked &#8220;about marrying her and buying a house in Mexico when he is released,&#8221; the AP reported, citing the lawsuit.
In January, Castro allegedly fired a gun at a home in north Minneapolis &#8220;with the intent to cause fear of immediate bodily harm or death to the four adults who were just inside the door,&#8221; Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said during a May news conference. The bullet hit Venezuelan migrant Julio Sosa-Celis in the leg before it traveled through a closet and into the wall of a child’s bedroom.
Castro allegedly falsely told federal investigators that Sosa-Celis and another man assaulted him with a broom handle and a snow shovel, prompting him to fire his gun in “self-defense,” Ellison said during a recent news conference.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) initially claimed that Sosa-Celis tried to “evade arrest” and “began to resist and violently assault” a federal officer. The department alleged that two individuals came out of a nearby apartment before attacking the officer “with a snow shovel and broom handle.”
Sosa-Celis then “got loose and began striking the officer with a shovel or broomstick,” DHS said at the time.
“Fearing for his life and safety,” the officer “fired a defensive shot” that hit Sosa-Celis in the leg, according to DHS. Sosa-Celis and two others “ran back into the apartment and barricaded themselves inside” before ICE took them into custody.
Then-Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons announced in February a federal probe into the incident after video footage showed that “sworn testimony provided by two separate officers appears to have made untruthful statements.”
“Lying under oath is a serious federal offense,” Lyons said at the time.
“The men and women of ICE are entrusted with upholding the rule of law and are held to the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and ethical conduct,” he said. “Violations of this sacred sworn oath will not be tolerated. ICE remains fully committed to transparency, accountability, and the fair enforcement of our nation’s immigration laws.”
A federal judge later dismissed the charges against the two migrants after the video footage emerged.
Authorities arrested Castro in Cameron County, Texas, on May 29. Four days later, Minnesota Democratic Governor Tim Walz asked Abbott to extradite Castro.

A woman whose illegal immigrant husband was behind a hunger strike inside ICE&#8217;s Delaney Hall detention center has launched a campaign for him to receive a crime victim visa.
Since Martin Soto was detained by ICE in February, his wife Gabriela Soto has pushed for his release. While Martin was helping lead the hunger strike inside the Newark detention facility over allegations of poor conditions, his wife spent days protesting to free every detainee.
He has since been moved to ICE&#8217;s detention center in Elizabeth, New Jersey.
All the while, Gabriela claimed that Martin, an illegal immigrant from Peru, was &#8220;abducted&#8221; by ICE while out buying diapers for their baby. She argued that he was “a loving father, husband, son, church member, worker.&#8221;
The sob story helped Gabriela raise more than $67,000. Media outlets and Democratic politicians also largely embraced Martin and Gabriela Soto as sympathetic figures, promoting Gabriela’s account of Martin’s arrest.
But a local police report <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/anti-ice-hunger-strike-leaders-sob-story-unravels-as-details-of-domestic-violence-arrest-surface">previously obtained by The Daily Wire</a> told a different story. According to the report, local authorities in Kearny, New Jersey, arrested Martin for allegedly committing a violent domestic assault on the same day his wife claimed ICE arrested him.
The day after his arrest, ICE officers showed up at the jail and took Soto into custody.

The report stated that Martin &#8220;purposely&#8221; caused &#8220;bodily injury&#8221; to a female victim, whose name was redacted, &#8220;specifically by using his hands, both opened and closed to strike&#8221; her “in her face, causing minor scratches and cuts to her face and neck.&#8221;
Martin then &#8220;placed a hand over&#8221; her &#8220;mouth so she could not scream for help,&#8221; according to the report.
The Daily Wire could not confirm the identity of the assault victim. In an earlier Instagram message to The Daily Wire, Gabriela confirmed that it was her husband mentioned in the report, but denied that he committed the assault, saying the incident never happened.
Now, Gabriela is trying to flip the script by asking supporters to call the New Jersey attorney general and demand that her husband receive a visa for being a victim of a crime, according to a recent Instagram post on her page.
The visa, known as a U-Visa, is reserved for &#8220;victims of certain crimes who have suffered mental or physical abuse&#8221; and who assist authorities with criminal investigations, according to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.
The Instagram post includes a script for supporters to recite during the calls to the state&#8217;s top cop.
&#8220;I am calling in regards to the pending U-Visa application for Martin Soto. His application has been pending for the past month due to the illegal labor policy of paying detainees $1 a day for work performed,&#8221; the script begins.
The script also stated that Martin is a father of two, but &#8220;would be a father of three&#8221; if not for his wife&#8217;s &#8220;miscarriage due to the stress of her husband&#8217;s time in detention.&#8221;
&#8220;He has suffered cold nights, endured inedible and expired food, and languished in solitary confinement. I&#8217;m requesting for the attorney general to sign Martin Soto&#8217;s U-Visa immediately so his federal judge sees a change in status and grants his release to come home to his family where he belongs,&#8221; it continues.
Scott Mechkowski, visiting fellow for deportation studies at the Oversight Project, said Martin is the least deserving of such protections.
&#8220;The U-Visa exists so victims will cooperate with prosecutors,&#8221; the former ICE deputy field office director said. &#8220;There is no prosecution here. No one has been charged, no one has been arrested, and a civil rights inquiry is not a criminal case.&#8221;
&#8220;They are asking a state officer to certify a crime no prosecutor has alleged, in order to manufacture federal immigration relief the state has no authority to grant. That is not victim protection, that is using a victim protection statute to route around federal law, and the people who pay for it are the trafficking and domestic violence survivors who have been waiting years in that line who the visas are actually intended for,&#8221; Mechkowski said.

Martin crossed the Arizona border illegally in January 2024 and was set to be deported before he expressed a fear of returning to his home country and was ultimately allowed to stay in the United States.
Now, he awaits the fate of his deportation case.

The State Department has temporarily paused all immigrant visa appointments for applicants across the globe.
The federal government said it made the decision because it needs time to train all consular staff to better screen visa applicants to determine whether they are likely to become dependent on the American welfare system, the Washington Post <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/immigration/2026/08/26/state-dept-pauses-immigrant-visa-appointments-worldwide-says-staff-need-training/">reported</a> on Wednesday. It is not clear when the appointments will restart.
&#8220;A more prosperous America means ensuring that visa applicants are not likely to become a public charge, as defined under U.S. law and regulation, and not likely to become dependent on U.S. public benefits reserved for qualified Americans in need,&#8221; the State Department said in a statement.
The department said the training would ensure consular officers &#8220;are fully equipped to evaluate every visa applicant comprehensively and consistently.&#8221; The pause is not expected to affect visas for tourists, foreign workers, or students, <a href="https://www.wsj.com/politics/policy/u-s-state-department-pauses-immigrant-visa-applications-25b31b23">according</a> to The Wall Street Journal.
Last Friday, a federal judge struck down the Trump administration&#8217;s 75-country visa ban that sought to target those looking to take advantage of taxpayer-funded public benefits.
U.S. District Judge Jeannette Vargas, who was appointed by President Joe Biden, said the 75-country policy  &#8220;represents a direct abrogation&#8221; of the consular officers&#8217; authority to determine which foreigners are eligible for visas.
The latest move comes as the Trump administration has taken recent actions to reform legal immigration programs.
As part of the effort, the federal government has revoked roughly 175,000 visas tied to individuals accused or convicted of crimes.

In an X post on Monday, Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau voiced the administration’s concerns about immigrants who game the visa system to extend their stay in the United States by later applying for asylum.
&#8220;People in the US and all over the world are fed up with bogus asylum claims. Asylum isn’t supposed to be a loophole to circumvent immigration laws; rather, it’s supposed to provide a narrow safe harbor for persons persecuted because of their race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion,&#8221; Landau wrote.
The Trump administration also recently proposed a $103,265 fee for employers looking to hire employees through the H-1B visa program, arguing that employers have abused the program to replace American workers with cheaper foreign labor and that the existing system fails to prioritize the most highly skilled workers.
It is the administration&#8217;s second attempt at instituting a six-figure fee for the program after a federal judge struck down a previous plan to charge a $100,000 fee.

Colombia is ushering in a new era of conservative immigration policies after its citizens elected a Right-wing president to replace the country&#8217;s previous far-Left leader.
Newly elected Colombian President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/another-trump-backed-candidate-declares-victory-over-the-left-in-latin-america" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Abelardo de la Espriella</a> said Sunday that he would commence immigration raids across the country as early as this week, according to the Associated Press.
The conservative Latin American leader, who was endorsed by President Donald Trump, said national immigration authorities, with the help of the Colombian police, will begin the operation by targeting illegal immigrants who are &#8220;committing crimes&#8221; before nabbing those who lack immigration status, <a href="https://apnews.com/article/colombia-de-la-espriella-migrants-president-venezuelans-raids-crime-05bb694f97b18a1d449e0926fe8f94e6" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to the AP.
&#8220;I will not accept any illegal immigrants, wherever they come from,&#8221; de la Espriella said in a video. &#8220;They will have to leave and be deported. It is a political decision I am taking responsibility for.&#8221;
The majority of migrants living in Colombia hail from neighboring Venezuela, according to the AP. Roughly 2.8 million Venezuelan nationals were living in Colombia as of August.
In 2021, Colombia granted temporary residence permits to roughly 2.3 million Venezuelan migrants, the AP reported. But it appears the new president is looking to turn the tide on the country&#8217;s years-long policy of amnesty.
Upon de la Espriella&#8217;s election, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he &#8220;looks forward to working closely&#8221; with the new president to &#8220;end illegal immigration to the United States,&#8221; among other initiatives.
In recent months, several Latin American countries, including Honduras, Costa Rica, Chile, Bolivia, and Ecuador, have elected Right-wing leaders.
At one point, Colombia&#8217;s previous leftist president, Gustavo Petro, temporarily refused to accept deportation flights from the United States. The move led to icy relations with Washington before Petro ultimately caved after Trump threatened new tariffs.
&#8220;The U.S. cannot treat Colombian migrants as criminals,&#8221; Petro said upon denying the arrival of the planes.
De la Espriella, who was sworn in three weeks ago, has signaled that he will usher in a new era of warm relations with the United States.

An illegal immigrant from El Salvador allegedly sold fentanyl to students near a high school in Virginia who later overdosed from the narcotic.
Isaac Melendez-Carranza, 31, allegedly sold the pills to Park View High School students who overdosed in May, authorities said. At the time, he already had a deportation order, which an immigration judge issued on July 18, 2024, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) told The Daily Wire.
The two students survived the overdoses after receiving doses of the opioid antidote Narcan.
Border agents caught Melendez-Carranza when he crossed the Rio Grande near Hebbronville, Texas, in May 2016, DHS said. He bonded out of federal custody in July 2016 before going on to allegedly commit his latest crimes.
On Thursday, local authorities arrested Melendez-Carranza following the execution of search warrants where they seized suspected narcotics and cash, the Loudoun County Sheriff&#8217;s Office <a href="https://sheriff.loudoun.gov/m/newsflash/home/detail/10821" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> in a statement.
“We found that the subject in question, Isaac Melendez-Carranza, actually had over 100 fentanyl pills with him at the time, in addition to several thousand dollars,” Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman <a href="https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/northern-virginia/suspected-drug-dealer-arrested-in-connection-to-loudoun-county-student-overdoses/4145731/">told</a> News4. “So, looked to me like he was getting ready to do another delivery to somebody.”
“He came in the country illegally 10 years ago, and so you know, had that not happened, maybe this would have never happened. So, just so you know, DHS – there&#8217;s a detainer on him,” Chapman said.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) lodged a detainer with the Loudoun County Jail on Thursday, asking local authorities to hand the Salvadoran national over to the feds if he is to be released. The Trump administration has faced challenges in working with local authorities in Virginia to arrest illegal immigrants accused of crimes and has blamed the commonwealth&#8217;s Democratic governor, Abigail Spanberger, for enacting sanctuary policies.
&#8220;ICE will work to ensure this criminal is REMOVED from our nation,&#8221; DHS <a href="https://x.com/DHSgov/status/2092042816390070392" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> in an X post on Monday.
Following Melendez-Carranza&#8217;s arrest, the Loudoun County Sheriff&#8217;s Office warned the public that &#8220;one pill can be deadly&#8221; and that &#8220;fentanyl is an extremely potent synthetic opioid, and even a small amount can cause a fatal overdose.&#8221;
&#8220;Illicit pills and powders may contain fentanyl without the user’s knowledge, making experimentation or taking a pill obtained from an unknown source especially dangerous,&#8221; the sheriff&#8217;s office said.
&#8220;Parents, caregivers, and students are encouraged to talk openly about the dangers of illicit drugs and counterfeit pills. If you suspect someone is experiencing an overdose, call 911 immediately,&#8221; the office added.
Melendez-Carranza is charged with two counts of distribution of a controlled substance and one count of sale of drugs near certain properties. He is being held without bond.

He was driving an 18-wheeler while wearing a GPS monitor issued by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) when he fatally hit a man on a major interstate.
Illegal immigrant Sube Singh, an Indian national, is accused of fatally striking 36-year-old Dedric Garrett while driving down I-20 in Hinds County, Mississippi, on Thursday.
Singh, who was driving a 2021 Freightliner, allegedly struck Garrett as he exited his 2016 Honda CR-V, <a href="https://www.wlbt.com/2026/08/21/one-dead-after-i-20-crash-involving-18-wheeler-mhp-investigating/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to WLBT 3. First responders pronounced Garrett dead at the scene.
Singh was not injured, the local news outlet reported.
Border Patrol agents encountered Singh on November 19, 2017, a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) spokesman told The Daily Wire. He was later placed into ICE custody before being released on bond on May 10, 2018.
Following Singh&#8217;s release, ICE placed him in their alternatives to detention program, which allowed officers to monitor him with a GPS tracking device, the spokesman said. ICE&#8217;s GPS monitors include ankle bracelets and wrist-worn devices.
In an X post Monday, Rep. Troy Nehls (R-TX) called Garrett&#8217;s death and others caused by illegal immigrant truckers &#8220;preventable.&#8221;
&#8220;If you are in our country illegally or can’t speak and understand English, you have no business operating an 80,000-pound semi-truck,&#8221; Nehls wrote. &#8220;It&#8217;s common sense.&#8221;
In response to a string of recent collisions involving illegal immigrant truckers, the Trump administration has introduced a series of new policies to take unqualified foreign drivers off American roads.
The changes include the enforcement of English-language requirements for those looking to obtain commercial driver&#8217;s licenses (CDLs).
The Trump administration has also kickstarted an initiative to train American veterans to replace illegal immigrant truck drivers.
Veterans with two years of experience safely operating heavy military vehicles will be allowed to bypass the traditional CDL training process, which takes roughly three to eight weeks and often costs applicants between $3,000 and $6,000.
The DHS spokesman said the department &#8220;is aggressively working with its interagency partners to get illegal alien commercial drivers off the road.&#8221;
As part of the crackdown, ICE officers have made arrests at trucking weigh stations across the country in recent months. During a three-day operation in July, federal authorities detained 21 illegal immigrant drivers with non-domiciled commercial driver licenses (CDLs) issued by California and New York, <a href="https://www.dhs.gov/news/2026/08/04/dhs-and-department-transportation-announce-successful-operation-removed-more-800" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to DHS.
&#8220;It is incredibly dangerous for illegal aliens, who often don’t know our traffic laws or even English, to be operating vehicles on America’s roads,&#8221; the spokesman said.

The Trump administration is preparing to revoke up to 200,000 visas issued to foreigners who later sought asylum in the United States, part of an effort to crack down on what officials say is abuse of the immigration system, The Associated Press reported Monday.
The State Department is expected to announce the effort soon, targeting foreigners with B1 and B2 business and tourist visas issued between 2016 and 2026 who later applied for asylum, <a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-rubio-visas-revoke-e9c14fdfd0ada439d2b9d8694e678a46?utm_source=app&amp;utm_medium=iOS_share&amp;utm_campaign=email#" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to the AP. The administration says some foreigners are obtaining temporary visas under false pretenses and then using the asylum process to remain in the United States.
&#8220;We are coordinating with DHS to identify and revoke the nonimmigrant visas of foreigners who have come to the United States claiming to be short-term visitors, but then file for asylum to stay here permanently,&#8221; State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said in a statement to the AP.
Pigott did not reveal the exact number of foreigners the State Department is hoping to target, saying &#8220;as the process will be ongoing, the number of revocations remains dynamic and will be done on a rolling basis.&#8221;
Revoking the visas would not necessarily result in immediate deportation, the AP reported. Instead, some pending asylum applications would be shifted from the affirmative asylum process to the defensive process, meaning the applicants would make their asylum cases before immigration judges while facing removal proceedings.

For roughly two years, the small-town police department in Sahuarita, Arizona, has been using electric shock gloves to control uncooperative subjects.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is set to spend up to $20 million on thousands of the gloves amid the Trump administration&#8217;s mass deportation campaign, according to a recent Department of Homeland Security (DHS) notice.
“It’s another device to help someone get compliant when they are not,” White House border czar Tom Homan said in a recent Fox News interview. “You can’t just go from 0 to 100, right, and the first thing you go for is lethal force.”
Opponents of ICE&#8217;s plan <a href="https://www.nilc.org/press/nilc-statement-on-ices-plan-to-buy-electric-shock-gloves/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">call</a> it &#8220;disgusting and barbaric.&#8221;
But Sahuarita&#8217;s police chief, John Noland, who oversees a force of 68 officers in the southern Arizona town and once approached ICE about using the gloves, says that could not be further from the truth.
When used &#8220;appropriately&#8221; and with the required training, &#8220;it is not inhumane,&#8221; Noland told The Daily Wire.
Noland himself has experienced the shocks roughly a dozen times during training exercises and said the electric jolt is only felt where the glove touches. He also said that the pain instantly disappears once contact ends.
&#8220;It hurts. It is so strange, the moment the glove is no longer applied to your skin, there is zero pain. It&#8217;s not as if I twisted your arm to the point of pain, and then I let go, I back off, and your arm still hurts. It is instantaneous,&#8221; he said.
Noland says the gloves are often more humane than a taser or a baton, his other options for controlling the unruly.
&#8220;I see it as a tool that might be overdue. I know that may not be a popular thing for those folks that are anti-ICE &#8230; But ICE is a law enforcement agency,&#8221; Noland said.
&#8220;In Arizona, we were the first law enforcement agency that does street work or patrol work to put them out. We&#8217;ve been successful with them,&#8221; he said.
It comes as ICE officers have experienced an uptick in violent attacks by both outside agitators and illegal immigrant targets.
Since President Donald Trump&#8217;s return to the White House, ICE agents have seen a 1,300% jump in assaults, along with a 3,200% increase in vehicular attacks, according to DHS.
Law enforcement officers across the country have used the technology, known as G.L.O.V.E., or Generated Low Output Voltage Emitter, to control violent suspects inside jails and in the field.
In order to use the gloves, law enforcement officers must complete a training course and get re-certified every two years, <a href="https://www.complianttechnologies.net/terms-and-conditions" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to the company behind the gloves, Kentucky-based Compliant Technologies LLC.
&#8220;The skirmish lines that perhaps you have seen on different news channels and whatnot, over the last few years of our federal agents, Border Patrol, ICE agents, and others, DHS, all struggling with people out in the field, trying to get them to comply, now becomes less of a struggle. Now becomes a scenario where there are realistically going to be less injuries,&#8221; Noland said.
&#8220;I wish we had it at the beginning of my career. There would have been so many fights and struggles that would have been over in a matter of moments,&#8221; he said.
Officers wearing the gloves must press a button to activate them before putting them to use and can only deliver a shock when they touch another&#8217;s skin. The current can&#8217;t pass through clothing, hair, metal, plastic, or fur, according to Compliant Technologies.
&#8220;The plus behind the gloves are, as soon as I&#8217;m done grabbing you, the pain is off,&#8221; Noland said, adding that &#8220;people give up real quick, so that&#8217;s a plus for us. Less injuries on our end, less injuries on their end.&#8221;
The gloves each have a unique serial number that identifies the officer assigned to it. They also track when and how long a shock is administered.
The result is better accountability when officers are using force, Noland said.
&#8220;The gloves track when they&#8217;re actually utilized, similar to a taser. If I touch my t-shirt with it, it shows no application was ever given. Even though the glove is on. But if I touch my skin or somebody else&#8217;s skin &#8230; it gives the date, the time, and how long the application was that I touched somebody.&#8221;
&#8220;And each glove has a microprocessor in it. that says this particular glove, with this particular serial number, issued to John Noland, or Officer Smith, or Officer Jones, or Garcia, etc. was utilized on whatever date and time. And here&#8217;s how many times it was utilized. So those are also pluses for us, because it helps track use of force.&#8221;
Noland sees the value for ICE, saying it gives agents the ability to stop an escalating situation in its tracks more quickly and with less force.
&#8220;I could have one of my officers that weighs much less than me, much shorter than me, have a pair of these gloves on, and if they&#8217;re grabbing onto my arms, or my hands, or my wrists, etc., and they&#8217;re pulling me to the ground, I&#8217;m realistically going through the ground,&#8221; he said.

Immigrant grocery store owners are suing democratic socialist New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani over his plan to open government-run supermarkets, arguing the mayor&#8217;s move will run them out of business.
The Multicultural Business Coalition (MBC), which is comprised of immigrant-run businesses, filed two lawsuits Monday, including one representing &#8220;hundreds&#8221; of grocers who are &#8220;members of groups historically discriminated against,&#8221; <a href="https://nypost.com/2026/08/24/business/immigrant-grocers-sue-mamdani-compare-nyc-plan-for-government-owned-supermarkets-to-walmart/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to The New York Post. The city plans to open the first of five supermarkets next year.
MBC’s president Ken Roldan called the city&#8217;s plan &#8220;a direct assault on minority business by a mayor who claims to be a champion of disenfranchised poor and working-class New Yorkers.&#8221;
On Monday, Mamdani defended the proposal, saying he is &#8220;fully confident in both the legality and the importance of our initiative,&#8221; <a href="https://www.foxbusiness.com/politics/big-apple-targeted-lawsuit-over-mamdanis-government-grocery-store-plans" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to Fox Business.
The second lawsuit alleges that the taxpayer-funded stores raise similar concerns surrounding the previous plans to open Walmarts in the Big Apple, which never came to fruition, the outlet reported. Opponents of Walmart&#8217;s New York City expansion argued that the store would similarly put small storefronts out of business.
The immigrant grocers also alleged that the city &#8220;failed to study the discriminatory effects&#8221; of the planned stores on family-owned bodegas and supermarkets run by Hispanics, Arabs, and Asians, according to The New York Post. The lawsuit asks that the city be forced to conduct such a study.
“My grandfather opened up one of the first bodegas in the late 1960s when East Harlem was burning, and the A&amp;Ps and Waldbaums were leaving,” MBC Chairman Frank Garcia said. “He established the first Latino Grocery Association to protect the rights of immigrant store owners. I am proud to be following up in his tradition because what Mayor Mamdani is doing is disgracing his memory.”
Jairo Guzman, president of the NY State Mexican Chamber of Commerce, called the immigrant-run bodegas &#8220;New York City&#8217;s great mosaic,&#8221; and said that &#8220;Mayor Mamdani needs to withdraw his disastrous plan and work with us to find different ways to bolster and sustain what so many (New York City) immigrants have created.&#8221;
“The Puerto Ricans were the bodega pioneers and they were followed by the Dominicans, the Arabs, the Koreans, the Chinese, and finally, my Mexican business members,” Guzman said.
Mamdani has <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/economists-lose-their-minds-over-mamdani-supermarkets-literally-how-you-destroy-an-economy">pledged</a> that the offerings at the government-run grocery stores will be marked 30% lower than private retailers. Economists have warned that the plan would lead to supply-chain breakdowns and bare shelves.
“This is LITERALLY how you destroy an economy,” venture capitalist Shaun Maguire recently warned, adding, “This is the story of the Soviet Union, Cuba, Venezuela, etc. Now coming to NYC!”

The first deportation flight to Haiti since the Trump administration terminated protections for Haitian illegal immigrants left on Aug. 20 loaded with gang members, child sex predators, and other violent criminals, The Daily Wire has learned.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) revealed that 162 illegal immigrants from Haiti were deported on the latest flight and shared the photos and rap sheets of 15 of the deportees. It came after the Supreme Court opened the door for President Donald Trump to end the longstanding Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for roughly 350,000 Haitians in June.
On the one-way flight was Zoe Pound gang member McGuyverson Jetin, who has convictions for four counts of lewd or lascivious battery with a victim between the ages of 12 and 15 and sexual battery, according to DHS. He came to the United States in June 2006 and received a green card in March 2007 before an immigration judge ordered his removal in 2018.
Another Zoe Pound gang member, Modeler Hyppolite, who has a conviction for second-degree assault on a pregnant woman, was sent back to Haiti, according to DHS. Hyppolite crossed the southern border in 2024 and was released under the Biden administration.
An 88 Crush Mob gang member, Davidson Athis, left the United States on the flight, DHS said. Athis has a conviction for first-degree assault, and arrests for conspiracy to commit assault, second-degree assault, fourth-degree burglary, second-degree fraud, drug possession, reckless endangerment, trespassing, and disorderly conduct. He snuck across the border as a gotaway when he entered the country before receiving a deportation order in 2023.
Bermann Desty, who was convicted of unlawful sexual activity with a minor and arrested for cruelty toward a child, assault, failure to register as a sex offender, probation violation, and public order crimes, left on the flight. He became a legal permanent resident after entering the United States in 2001, before receiving a deportation order in July 2026.
Wilbur Senat also departed the United States. He has convictions for sexual exploitation of a minor and arrests for burglary and larceny. Senat came to the United States in 2006 and became a green card holder in 2007 before receiving a deportation order in July 2026.
The Trump administration also removed Morel Bain, who has convictions for felony exploitation/enticement and arrests for failure to register as a sex offender, obscene communication, and public order crimes. Bain crossed the Texas border illegally in 2024 and was released into the country under the Biden administration before receiving a removal order in January 2026.
Ernst Joachim left after receiving a conviction for corruption of minors and had an arrest for unlawful contact with a minor. He came to the United States in September 2023 through the Biden administration&#8217;s humanitarian parole program. His parole status expired in June 2025, and an immigration judge ordered his deportation in April 2026.
Also among the group of Haitian deportees was Jean Daniel Henry, who has convictions for burglary, larceny, possession of cocaine, selling cocaine, possession of marijuana, possession of narcotic equipment, possession of stolen property, fraud, carrying a concealed weapon, trespassing, and destroying evidence. Henry came to the United States in 1982 using a green card, which was terminated after his convictions. In September 2025, he received a deportation order.
The list of deportees also included Elton Petit-Frere, who has convictions for four counts of assault on a female, resisting a public officer, attempted robbery, robbery with a dangerous weapon, carrying a concealed weapon, resisting a public officer, breaking and entering, larceny of a firearm, felon in possession of a firearm, and arrests for possession of marijuana, larceny, breaking or entering a motor vehicle, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, and larceny. He came to the United States as a green card holder. His renewal application was denied after his convictions, resulting in a deportation order in May 2026.
Alberto Derisme, a Haitian with convictions for possession of controlled substance, possession of synthetic drugs, possession of narcotic paraphernalia, resisting officer without violence, and obstruction of police, also left the United States. He arrived in 2008 and received a green card in 2012 before being ordered deported in July 2026.
Gregory Saintil, who has a conviction for possession of cocaine and fentanyl with intent to sell, and arrests for kidnapping, domestic battery by strangulation, and aggravated battery, was also deported. He arrived in 2010 and received a removal order in February 2026.
The Trump administration sent Sebastian Sainvil, a man convicted of assault by strangulation and breaking and entering to terrorize, back to Haiti. He snuck past border authorities when he entered the United States and received a deportation order in June 2026.
Jean Renaud Pascal, who has convictions for 18 counts of alien smuggling for profit and conspiracy to bring certain inadmissible aliens into the United States, was deported on the flight. He arrived in 2011 as a green card holder and received a deportation order in 2024.
Diego Marseille, a Haitian national with convictions for resisting law enforcement and invasion of privacy, was also sent back. He crossed the Texas border illegally in September 2021 and was released into the country by the Biden administration. An immigration judge ordered his removal in July 2026.
The flight carried Telifait Telifort, who has a conviction for driving under the influence – serious bodily injury. Telifort crossed the border illegally in 2008 and received a work permit in 2010. His work authorization expired in 2019, and he received a deportation order in July 2026.
After the Supreme Court&#8217;s ruling, ICE officers received orders to prioritize the arrest and deportation of Haitian nationals. Federal immigration officers have also adopted the tactic of calling in Haitian migrants for appointments at their local ICE offices and placing ankle monitors to track them as they await final deportation orders.
&#8220;On the latest deportation flight back to Haiti, we deported dangerous criminals including pedophiles, gang members, drug traffickers, and violent assailants,&#8221; Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said in a statement. &#8220;Despite the best efforts from activist judges, the Supreme Court reaffirmed what we already know: the T in TPS stands for TEMPORARY.&#8221;
&#8220;TPS was never designed to be permanent, yet previous administrations have used it as a de facto amnesty program for decades. Under the strong leadership of President Donald J. Trump, we are putting America first again,&#8221; Mullin added.

Trans-identifying illegal immigrants being held in federal immigration detention centers will no longer have access to hormones aiding their so-called transitions.
Specialized treatment for transgender detainees in the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has ended altogether under the Trump administration, The New York Times <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2026/08/20/nyregion/transgender-migrants-ice.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.
&#8220;To be clear: we will NOT waste taxpayer dollars to provide hormone therapy to illegal aliens seeking to change their sex,&#8221; DHS said in an X post on Thursday.
The number of ICE detainees who identify as transgender makes up a small percentage of those being held.
Between October 2023 and September 2024, ICE held 244 detainees who identified as transgender, according to agency data.
The agency no longer shares that data, but ICE&#8217;s last public count listed 47 transgender detainees in ICE custody as of January, according to The New York Times. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) also scrubbed an Obama-era policy &#8220;on the care of transgender individuals in custody&#8221; from its website.
Meanwhile, activists have reported instances of harassment, abuse, and retaliation against trans-identifying detainees from ICE agents and fellow detainees.
Venezuelan illegal immigrant Camila Toro de Paula, 25, a transgender-identifying man, told The New York Times that he has been assaulted and threatened, while also being denied hormones. He has been held in solitary confinement, where he claims to lack access to water for up to 24 hours at a time.
According to DHS, Toro de Paula has a rap sheet that includes charges for felony assault and criminal possession, which were dismissed and sealed. His lawyer claimed the charges stemmed from his June 30, 2025, arrest in the Bronx after he allegedly hit a man on the head with a skillet.
Toro de Paula&#8217;s attorney said the Venezuelan national was fighting off a robber.
The transgender-identifying illegal immigrant was also charged with prostitution in Queens, which was later dismissed, according to The New York Times. Later, he was charged with pickpocketing in Queens and pleaded guilty to jostling.
Bridget Crawford, the legal director at Immigration Equality, told the outlet that &#8220;the administration is creating a humanitarian disaster” with its policies.
The New York Times also reported that &#8220;safeguards&#8221; for transgender ICE detainees &#8220;have vanished&#8221; since Trump&#8217;s return to the White House.
DHS has denied that any &#8220;detainees are being beaten or abused.&#8221;
“No lawbreakers in the history of human civilization have been treated better than illegal aliens in the United States,” the department said.

The Trump administration has tapped vocal angel father Joe Abraham, whose daughter Katie was killed by an illegal immigrant drunk driver, to serve in a major role within Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Abraham will assume the role of executive director of ICE&#8217;s Victims of Immigration Crime Engagement, or VOICE, office, where he will support other angel families whose loved ones were victims of crimes committed by illegal immigrants.
In January 2025, Guatemalan national Julio Cucul-Bol was driving drunk when he caused a hit-and-run crash in Illinois that killed Katie, 20, and her friend Chloe Polzin. Cucul-Bol later pleaded guilty to aggravated DUI causing death and leaving the scene of a crash involving death and was sentenced to 30 years in prison.
The grieving father has since become a vocal advocate for President Donald Trump&#8217;s mass deportation effort and immigration policies. He has also openly criticized Illinois&#8217; sanctuary policies.
His daughter&#8217;s story also inspired the Trump administration&#8217;s earlier &#8220;Operation Midway Blitz,&#8221; a massive immigration sweep targeting Illinois.
&#8220;Since his daughter, Katie, was murdered by an illegal alien drunk driver in a hit-and-run in sanctuary Illinois, he has been a staunch advocate for victims of illegal alien crime,&#8221; the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said in a statement Friday.
&#8220;In his new role, he will continue to help families who have lost a loved one to a preventable tragedy caused by open-border policies,&#8221; the department said.
In a statement posted to X on Friday, Abraham said he&#8217;s &#8220;excited&#8221; to assume the new role &#8220;because this is not simply a government position for me, it is deeply personal and rooted in a mission I have come to understand through unimaginable loss.&#8221;
&#8220;I want to use my experience, my voice, and what I have learned through Katie&#8217;s story to make sure victims and their families are heard, treated with dignity, and never become an afterthought in our immigration system,&#8221; he said.
The Biden administration previously closed the VOICE office in 2021 and replaced it with the Victims Engagement and Services Line, a service that allowed illegal immigrant detainees to report abuse in ICE detention centers.
The Trump administration reopened the VOICE office in April 2025. Since then, the office has received 897 calls from victims, family members, and advocates, DHS <a href="https://www.ice.gov/news/releases/dhs-releases-first-voice-and-dhs-vine-data-reports-emphasizing-support-victims#&amp;_intcmp=fnc_politics_article_main-content_article-body_6_11" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> in June.
In total, the office has assisted 588 victims and 185 victim families, according to DHS. The most frequently reported crimes are assault, making up 35%, rape or sexual assault, at 17%, and homicide or manslaughter at 10%.
