On Monday night, GOP Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell declared that his battle to keep the Senate filibuster in place had been won.
McConnell released a statement reading:

On Monday, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/powerpost/senate-gridlock-threatens-biden-agenda/2021/01/23/6119e512-5cf3-11eb-b8bd-ee36b1cd18bf_story.html">The Washington Post</a> reported that Arizona Democratic Sen. Krysten Sinema revealed that, like fellow Democrat Sen. Joe Manchin, she would not vote to end the Senate filibuster:
<blockquote>Sen. Joe Manchin III (D-W.Va.) has been the most outspoken Democratic opponent of changing Senate rules and has sought to assemble a bipartisan cadre of centrist senators willing to hammer out deals across the aisle. But other Democrats are similarly resistant. A spokeswoman for Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (Ariz.) said the senator is “against eliminating the filibuster, and she is not open to changing her mind about eliminating the filibuster.”
Meanwhile, other Democratic senators, including Jon Tester (Mont.), have also signaled support for the status quo while hinting that GOP stonewalling could change their minds.</blockquote>
The Post also notes that Biden, who has long stood by the filibuster, said in July that he would “take a look” at eliminating it, &#8220;depend[ing] on how obstreperous [Republicans] become.&#8221;
Because of the filibuster, a minimum of 60 votes is needed to advance legislation; most Democratic proposals would require at least 10 GOP senators to agree in order for them to be passed. Eliminating the legislative filibuster would enable the Democrats to pass legislation with a simple majority vote.
The way the filibuster works is this: the minority party can keep debate open on a legislative issue until the Senate votes to close the issue, but to close the vote takes 60 votes. There are limitations on the filibuster: it cannot be used for certain budget bills, federal executive branch appointees and judicial appointments, including Supreme Court nominees.
As Rachel Bovard of the Heritage Foundation <a href="https://www.heritage.org/political-process/commentary/why-preserving-the-legislative-filibuster-critical-conservatives">explained</a>:
<blockquote>Far from being simply a weapon of obstruction, the filibuster actually forces compromise. The framers designed the Senate to be a consensus-driven body. If a majority party knows they need to garner 60 votes to end debate on a bill, the necessity of working across the aisle, negotiating, and finding areas of agreement becomes imperative, rather than optional.
Without the filibuster as a tool of negotiation, the Senate becomes little more than a smaller version of the House of Representatives where legislation reflects the priorities of the majority, with little regard to concerns of the minority.</blockquote>

In a &#8220;fact-check&#8221; hitting Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), the left-leaning Washington Post <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2021/01/26/ted-cruz-pumps-up-keystone-job-numbers/">admitted</a> that President Joe Biden killed about 11,000 construction jobs on his first day in office by canceling the Keystone XL pipeline contract.
The Post gave Cruz &#8220;two Pinocchios&#8221; for his statement asserting as much, noting that the jobs killed are constructions jobs, and therefore &#8220;temporary.&#8221; Because Cruz didn&#8217;t include that the jobs were &#8220;temporary&#8221; and not permanent, he was supposedly misleading the public, the Post rationalized.
In response, Cruz highlighted Tuesday that all construction jobs are in effect &#8220;temporary,&#8221; criticizing the Post for belittling the loss of construction jobs.
&#8220;Cruz cited a real estimate of approximately 11,000 jobs, but he left out that they were all temporary,&#8221; the Post concluded. &#8220;In the same report, the State Department said the Keystone XL pipeline, if built, would require only 35 to 50 permanent positions.&#8221;

As reported by <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/canadian-lawmakers-react-to-biden-killing-keystone-xl-pipeline">The Daily Wire</a> on Thursday, Canadian lawmakers, including the country’s prime minister, expressed outrage over Biden&#8217;s move to rescind a permit for a pipeline to transport oil from Canada to the Gulf Coast.
&#8220;Biden took office on Wednesday and, as one of his first acts, rescinded approval for the Keystone XL pipeline that former President Donald Trump had green-lighted in 2017,&#8221; <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/canadian-lawmakers-react-to-biden-killing-keystone-xl-pipeline">Tim Pearce</a> reported. &#8220;The pipeline has long been a target of environmental activists and Democratic politicians looking to stop the use of fossil fuels.&#8221;
“While we welcome the President’s commitment to fight climate change, we are disappointed but acknowledge the President’s decision to fulfill his election campaign promise on Keystone XL,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau <a href="https://nypost.com/2021/01/20/canadian-pm-trudeau-disappointed-at-biden-plan-to-dash-keystone-xl/">said</a> in a statement.
“Canada is the single-largest supplier of energy to the United States, contributing to U.S. energy security and economic competitiveness, and supporting thousands of jobs on both sides of the border,” Trudeau added. “Workers in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and across Canada will always have our support.”
&#8220;Alberta Premier Jason Kenney said he was &#8216;deeply disturbed&#8217; by Biden’s decision to stop work on the $8 billion project,&#8221; Pearce noted. &#8220;<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/biden-reportedly-plans-to-nix-keystone-xl-permit-on-day-one">Kenney had threatened</a> legal action earlier in the week after reports of Biden’s intent to kill the pipeline surfaced.&#8221;

Senk later said that “hundreds of guys” have already been laid off.
The Associated Press <a href="https://apnews.com/article/joe-biden-new-mexico-us-news-coronavirus-pandemic-a07cb29630f79112eced658f18db0e51?utm_source=Twitter&amp;utm_medium=AP&amp;utm_campaign=SocialFlow">noted</a> that local leaders in New Mexico were worried about the impact that Biden’s decision would have on their state and leaders in Utah have asked Biden to reconsider his decision.
“During his inauguration, President Biden spoke about bringing our nation together. Eliminating drilling on public lands will cost thousands of New Mexicans their jobs and destroy what’s left of our state’s economy,” Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway told the AP. “How does that bring us together? Environmental efforts should be fair and well-researched, not knee-jerk mandates that just hurt an already impoverished state.”
Native American tribes have also reportedly been angered by Biden’s decision to cancel the pipeline.</blockquote>

Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) called for a group of Democrats to be disciplined Monday after they filed an ethics complaint against him and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) for objecting to certifying the 2020 election.
Hawley wrote a <a href="https://www.hawley.senate.gov/sites/default/files/2021-01/2021-01-25%20-%20Hawley%20Letter%20-%20Senate%20Ethics%20Committee.pdf">letter</a> to Sens. James Lankford (R-OK) and Chris Coons (D-DE), the chairman and vice chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics respectively, accusing Democrats of hypocrisy and demanding an investigation into a group of lawmakers pursuing an ethics complaint against him and Cruz.
“On January 21, seven Democrat Members of the Senate filed an unprecedently frivolous and improper ethics complaint against me and Senator Cruz. Without citing any relevant evidence or offering any good-faith argument, they attempted to link my objection lodged under 3 U.S.C. § 15 to the criminal riot at the Capitol that occurred on January 6,” Hawley wrote. “They submitted their meritless complaint in potential coordination with a campaign by partisan and dark-money groups that have peddled falsehoods about me and my objection.”
“By knowingly submitting a frivolous complaint to accomplish impermissible partisan purposes, these Senators have engaged in improper conduct that may reflect upon the Senate,” he continued. “The Committee should discipline these Members to ensure that the Senate’s ethics process is not weaponized for rank partisan purposes.”
Hawley accused the Democrats of hypocrisy for coming after him and Cruz after Democrats had not taken similar steps against lawmakers from their own party who objected to certifying the elections of 2000, 2004, and 2016.
“It is clear that my objection rested on far more solid ground than the electoral college objections submitted by Democrat Members of Congress after the 2000, 2004, and 2016 elections. Yet Democrats did not hasten to censure or expel their objecting colleagues; instead, they offered paeans to them,” Hawley wrote. “The only difference is that I am a Republican. This manifestly partisan exercise demeans this Committee and the critical purposes that it serves.”
Hawley ended his letter calling for investigations into Democratic Sens. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, Sherrod Brown of Ohio, Mazie Hirono of Hawaii, Tim Kaine of Virginia, Tina Smith of Minnesota, Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island, and Ron Wyden of Oregon for filing an ethics complaint against him and Cruz.
“This complaint is none other than a transparent attempt by seven Senators to punish a political opponent for the entirely lawful representation of their constituents. The Senate cannot function if its neutral administrative processes are hijacked for bad-faith ends, but that is precisely what is occurring here,” Hawley wrote. “For the foregoing reasons, I respectfully request that the Committee investigate the conduct of Senators Whitehouse, Wyden, Smith, Blumenthal, Hirono, Kaine, and Brown in preparing and filing this baseless and destructive complaint.”
Hawley has faced blowback over his decision to object to certifying the 2020 election on Jan. 6. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/loews-hotel-chain-cancels-josh-hawley-fundraiser-following-pressure-from-social-media">Loews Hotels</a> canceled a fundraising event for the Missouri senator scheduled to be held in one of the hotel company’s properties in Orlando, Florida. The publishing house <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/josh-hawleys-book-big-tech-picked-up-by-conservative-publisher-after-cancellation">Simon &amp; Schuster</a> exited an agreement to publish the senator’s book, connecting Hawley’s objection to a group of rioters that stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6.

In reference to Biden&#8217;s stated goal of vaccinating 100 million people in the first 100 days of his presidential tenure, Doocy pointed out that we were already on track to hit that rate per day when Biden took office. Biden, acknowledging that the goal of vaccinating one million people had already been reached, stated, “I think we’ll get there before that. I said — I hope — I misspoke — I hope we’ll be able to increase as we go on until we get to the 1,500,000 a day. That’s my hope.”
&#8220;And then, the follow-up to that would be,&#8221; Doocy replied. &#8220;Now that you’re president and you’re saying, &#8216;There’s nothing we can do to change the trajectory of the pandemic in the next several months,&#8217; what happened to two months ago when you were talking declaratively about, &#8216;I am going to shut down the virus?'&#8221;
&#8220;I am going to shut down the virus, but no — I never said I’d do it in two months; I said it took a long time to get here; it’s going to take a long time to beat it,&#8221; Biden replied.
On December 8, speaking in Wilmington, Delaware, Biden stated about his vaccination goal:
<blockquote>This team will help get at the latest at the last 100 million COVID-19 vaccine, at least 100 million COVID vaccine shots into the arms of the American people in the first 100 days. 100 million shots in the first 100 days. And we’ll follow the guidance of science to get the vaccines to those most at risk. That includes healthcare professionals, people in longterm care and as soon as possible, we will include educators. This will be the most efficient mass vaccination plan in U.S. history. I credit everyone who has gotten us up to this point. But developing a vaccine is only one Herculean task. Distributing it is another Herculean task. Vaccines in a vial only work if they’re injected into an arm of people, especially those most at risk.</blockquote>
Biden also slammed the Trump administration on its distribution plans:
<blockquote>Our preliminary view of the Trump administration’s vaccine distribution plans confirms media reports. Without urgent action by this Congress this month to put sufficient resources into vaccine distribution and manufacturing, which the bipartisan group was working on, there’s a real chance that after an early round of vaccinations, the effort will slow and stall.
Let me repeat. We need Congress to finish the bipartisan work underway now, or millions of Americans may wait months longer to get the vaccine, months longer than they otherwise would have to wait to get the vaccine, vaccination. Look, and then we’re going to need additional action next year to fund the rest of the distribution efforts. We also need the Trump administration to act now though, to purchase the doses it has negotiated with Pfizer and Moderna and to work swiftly to scale, manufacturing to U.S. populations and the world. This can be fixed. If it is fixed, my team will be able to get at least 100 million vaccinations done in my first 100 days.</blockquote>

State Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis on Monday sent a letter to IOC President Thomas Bach &#8220;to encourage you to consider relocating the 2021 Olympics from Tokyo, Japan to the United States of America, and more specifically to Florida.&#8221;
&#8220;With media reports of leaders in Japan &#8216;privately&#8217; concluding that they are too concerned about the pandemic for the 2021 Olympics to take place, there is still time to deploy a site selection team to Florida to meet with statewide and local officials on holding the Olympics in the Sunshine State,&#8221; Patronis wrote in the <a href="https://www.myfloridacfo.com/sitePages/newsroom/pressRelease.aspx?id=5768">letter</a>. &#8220;I would welcome the opportunity to pitch Florida and help you make the right contacts to get this done.&#8221;
Patronis touted Florida&#8217;s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
&#8220;When most of the major states were shutting down their economies, we were fortunate enough to have a Governor that recognized the important balance of fighting the virus with keeping the economy open,&#8221; he wrote. &#8220;Moreover, Governor [Ron] DeSantis has partnered with the private sector to rapidly distribute vaccines to our most vulnerable populations. Unlike other states, when the COVID-19 vaccine comes to Florida it doesn’t just sit on the shelf wrapped in government red tape; it moves fast to protect our communities.&#8221;
Last week, officials organizing the games in Tokyo said they expect to go on with the games as scheduled, planned for July 23 to August 8.
&#8220;I am determined to realize a safe and secure Tokyo Games as proof that mankind will have overcome the virus,&#8221; Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said.
Bach also expressed confidence that the games will occur. &#8220;We have at this moment, no reason whatsoever to believe that the Olympic Games in Tokyo will not open on the 23rd of July in the Olympic stadium in Tokyo,&#8221; Bach said. &#8220;This is why there is no plan B and this is why we are fully committed to make these games safe and successful.&#8221;
But Tokyo recently declared a state of emergency due to a resurgence of COVID-19 cases. And The Times, a British newspaper, wrote on Twitter that &#8220;the Japanese government has privately concluded that the Tokyo Olympics will have to be cancelled because of the coronavirus, and the focus is now on securing the Games for the city in the next available year, 2032.&#8221;

Florida&#8217;s chief financial officer went on, saying the state has successfully allowed sports to take place during the pandemic. &#8220;When most states shut down their sporting events, the city of Jacksonville hosted the Ultimate Fighting Championship (the UFC) and the National Basketball Association (NBA) setup the &#8216;bubble&#8217; to hold games in Orlando. Moreover, during football season the National Football League (NFL) and college teams were able to compete on Florida soil.&#8221;
And Patronis said Florida was able to reopen its international tourist destinations, including Disney&#8217;s theme parks, which &#8220;have been open and operating safely in Florida for some time.&#8221;
&#8220;In fact, Disney serves as an incredible model for how to run a complex organization in the midst of COVID-19,&#8221; he added.
He also took a personal angle in his letter to the IOC president: &#8220;Although I write to you in a professional capacity, I should also add that I am a father of two boys who love sports, and the idea of cancelling the Olympics when there have been so many athletes who have worked so hard for this opportunity is a tough pill to swallow. I’ve always believed that sports and competition makes our world a better place, and these athletes demonstrate to children around the world that when you work hard, and put your mind to something, anything is possible.&#8221;
Patronis concluded, &#8220;Whatever precautions are required let’s figure it out and get it done.&#8221;

Former President Donald Trump established an official post-presidency office in Palm Beach County, Florida, on Monday to oversee his post-presidential affairs.
&#8220;Today, the 45th President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, formally opened the Office of the Former President,&#8221; a statement from the new office said.
&#8220;The Office will be responsible for managing President Trump&#8217;s correspondence, public statements, appearances, and official activities to advance the interests of the United States and to carry on the agenda of the Trump Administration through advocacy, organizing, and public activism. President Trump will always and forever be a champion for the American People,&#8221; the statement added.

The announcement of Trump&#8217;s new office came on the same day that Democrats delivered one article of impeachment against to the Senate. House prosecutors delivered the impeachment charge of &#8220;incitement of insurrection&#8221; after making a ceremonial walk across the Capitol to the Senate. Arguments in the Senate trial will begin the week of Feb. 8. Trump, who was impeached twice, will be the first former president to face an impeachment trial.
There has been much speculation about what Trump would do during his post-presidency. Trump himself has often fed the rumors, repeatedly hinting that he may run again in 2024. Trump, who departed Washington, D.C., on Wednesday after skipping the inauguration of his successor, has also reportedly talked with allies about forming a new political party in an effort to continue his political career.
According to a report in The Wall Street Journal, Trump discussed the matter with several aides and said he would want to call the new party the &#8220;Patriot Party.&#8221;
&#8220;It&#8217;s unclear how serious Mr. Trump is about starting a new party, which would require a significant investment of time and resources,&#8221; reported the Journal. &#8220;The president has a large base of supporters, some of whom were not deeply involved in Republican politics prior to Mr. Trump&#8217;s 2016 campaign.&#8221;
But Trump’s political team has disavowed “Patriot Party” groups that have filed with the Federal Elections Commission (FEC) in recent days following news reports that the former president was considering starting his own party.
“On January 22, 2021, Patriot Party filed a Form 1 (Statement of Organization) listing DJTFP as a participant in purported joint fundraising activities under 11 C.F.R. 102.17,” Donald J. Trump for President Inc., the Trump’s official campaign committee, said in a filing. “DJTFP did not authorize the filing of this Form 1, has not entered into any joint fundraising agreement to fundraise through Patriot Party, and has no knowledge of Patriot Party’s activities whatsoever.”
A Trump spokesperson said in a statement, “We are not supportive of this effort, have nothing to do with it and only know about it through public reporting.” Bloomberg News <a href="https://www.detroitnews.com/story/news/politics/2021/01/25/trump-campaign-disavows-notice-linking-him-patriot-party/4250579001/">reported</a> that Trump “has no plans to break from the Republican Party to pursue a third party.”
In his final address as president, just before flying home to Florida aboard Air Force One, Trump told supporters gathered at an Air Force base in Maryland: &#8220;We will be back in some form.&#8221;

On Monday January 25th, California Governor Gavin Newsom “<a href="https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/article/Source-California-lifting-stay-at-home-orders-15895132.php">lifted</a> mandatory stay-home orders across California.” Restaurants in Alameda, Contra Costa, Napa, Sonoma, Solano, Santa Clara, San Mateo and Marin counties — almost every Bay Area county — have announced that they will restart outdoor dining immediately. San Francisco Mayor London Breed also announced that outdoor dining at restaurants in San Francisco would restart on Thursday.
L.A. County will allow outdoor dining to restart on Friday, and San Diego County will also be <a href="https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/business/story/2021-01-25/san-diego-restaurants-prepare-to-reopen-as-newson-lifts-covid-19-stay-at-home-order">allowing</a> businesses to partially reopen.
Lifting the statewide stay-at-home order “means counties will return to the colored tier system that existed before December’s order.” 
Michigan — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced on Friday, January 22nd that bars and indoor dining would be permitted to reopen at 25% capacity.
“Under a new epidemic order that will last from Feb. 1 through Feb. 21, restaurants and bars will be allowed to offer indoor dining at 25% capacity with up to 100 people, and they must close by 10 p.m. each night. Tables must also be six feet apart with no more than six people per table,” <a href="https://www.detroitnews.com/story/news/politics/2021/01/22/gov-whitmer-provide-update-covid-19-response-friday/6668851002/">reported</a> The Detroit News.

Speaking on January 11th, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo reversed his rhetoric on the importance of widespread lockdowns, instead announcing that businesses must soon reopen.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said on January 14th that “she wants the city’s bars and restaurants to reopen for indoor service ‘as soon as possible’ and plans to discuss the issue with Illinois Gov. Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser <a href="https://www.foxbusiness.com/economy/dc-mayor-bowser-confirms-indoor-bar-and-restaurant-service-to-resume-at-25-capacity-starting-january-22">announced</a> that the city “will roll back its COVID-19 restrictions on indoor dining beginning Friday, Jan. 22 at 5 a.m., allowing restaurants and bars to return to 25% capacity, or no more than 250 people.”

A South Carolina woman and her husband have been charged with homicide by child abuse of their adopted daughter.
Ariel Robinson, 29, and her husband, Jerry Robinson, 34, according to police, inflicted a &#8220;series of blunt force injuries&#8221; on three-year-old Victoria Smith.
Ariel Robinson won Food Network&#8217;s 20th season of &#8220;Worst Cooks in America.&#8221; The network has since pulled Robinson&#8217;s season.
<a href="https://www.theblaze.com/news/ariel-jerry-robinson-child-murder">According</a> to The Blaze, the Robinsons called 911 on Jan. 15 to report that the three-year-old was unresponsive, adding, &#8220;When medical professionals arrived, they immediately suspected child abuse, <a href="https://www.fitsnews.com/2021/01/25/sc-police-release-heavily-redacted-report-in-the-murder-of-3-year-old-victoria-rose-smith/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">according</a> to the heavily redacted police report.&#8221;
Tiffany and Cameron Huggins, who fostered Smith before she was adopted by the Robinsons, said the child was &#8220;just our light,&#8221; with a contagious smile. The couple fostered Smith for 10 months.
“When she entered a room, all eyes were on her, because she demanded it and she was a cutie,” Tiffany <a href="https://www.wyff4.com/article/she-just-had-so-much-to-offer-upstate-parents-charged-in-death-of-3-year-old-adopted-child/35271235#">told</a> WYFF 4 News.
&#8220;They said she instantly clicked with their family,&#8221; the report added, &#8220;Her smile was contagious and she enjoyed singing and riding her bike.&#8221;
“She was just a natural,” Tiffany said. “She had the best personality and I’m not just saying that [because] I was her momma, but she was just our light. She was a beautiful child, inside and out.&#8221;

Former President Donald Trump issued his first endorsement since leaving office on Jan. 20, backing his former press secretary Sarah Sanders in her race for governor of Arkansas.
Trump endorsed Sanders in a statement released on Monday night, the same day that Sanders announced her long-anticipated run for office.
“Sarah Huckabee Sanders is a warrior who will always fight for the people of Arkansas and do what is right, not what is politically correct. Sarah is strong on Borders, tough on Crime, and fully supports the Second Amendment and our great law enforcement officers,” Trump wrote in a statement. “She loves our Military and Veterans – and her home state of Arkansas. Sarah will be a GREAT governor and she has my Complete and Total Endorsement!”

Sanders jumped into the race which already has two other GOP competitors: Lt. Gov. Tim Griffin and state Attorney General Leslie Rutledge. Current Gov. Asa Hutchinson is blocked from running for reelection because of term limits.
Sanders, who has relatively high name recognition from her time in the Trump administration, is <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/reports-sarah-huckabee-sanders-to-announce-bid-for-governor">expected</a> to begin the campaign with an edge in polling. She is also the daughter of former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, who is now a conservative political commentator.
Sanders <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/breaking-sarah-huckabee-sanders-is-running-for-governor-of-arkansas-america-is-at-stake">announced</a> her run for governor, which has been rumored since soon after she left the Trump administration in June 2019, in a video put out on Monday morning.
“America is great because we are free, but today our freedom and the rule of law are under attack. I was the first White House press secretary to require Secret Service protection because of a credible, violent threat against me. We’ve seen violence in our streets, at a congressional baseball practice and at our Capitol. This is not who we are as Americans,” Sanders said.
“To remain free, we must have law and order and resolve our differences peacefully. The radical left’s solution is to impose government control and censorship from the top down. But their socialism and cancel culture will not heal America, it will only further divide and destroy us,” she continued. “Everything we love about America is at stake, and with the radical left now in control of Washington, your governor is your last line of defense. In fact, your governor must be on the front line, so today I announce my candidacy for governor of Arkansas and ask for your prayers and your support.”
“As governor, I will defend your right to be free from socialism and tyranny, your 2nd Amendment right to keep your family safe, and your freedom of speech and religious liberty. Our state needs a leader with the courage to do what’s right, not what’s politically correct or convenient. I took on the media, the radical left, and their cancel culture – and I won,” Sanders said. “As governor, I will be your voice and never let them silence you.”

Former Attorney General Eric Holder urged Democrats to &#8220;use the power&#8221; of their U.S. Senate majority to pack the Supreme Court and the federal judiciary.
“It is painfully clear Democrats and progressives are uncomfortable with the acquisition and use of power, while Republicans and conservatives never have been,” Holder said during a virtual conference on judicial reform hosted by the <a href="https://www.washingtontimes.com/topics/brookings-institution/">Brookings Institution</a>. &#8220;Our courts badly need reforms.”
“The Republicans have abused their power to give themselves an unfair advantage,” Holder later added. “It is necessary and totally appropriate to add seats.”
Holder has been an advocate for court-packing for quite some time. In 2019, for instance, <a href="https://thehill.com/regulation/court-battles/433124-holder-says-next-dem-president-should-consider-packing-courts">he said</a> during a discussion at Yale Law National Security Group that the next Democrat president should pack the court.
&#8220;In response to a question, Attorney General Holder said that given the unfairness, unprecedented obstruction, and disregard of historical precedent by [Senate Majority Leader] Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans, when Democrats retake the majority they should consider expanding the Supreme Court to restore adherence to previously accepted norms for judicial nominations,” said Patrick Rodenbush, spokesperson for the National Democratic Redistricting Committee.
A <a href="http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/general_politics/march_2019/voters_favor_term_limits_for_supreme_court_but_no_more_members">Rasmussen poll recently</a> indicated that Americans would rather see term limits on the Supreme Court before they see court-packing.
Last year, however, an <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/academic-study-encourages-scotus-packing-no-political-fallout-for-democrats">academic study</a> from political scientist Aaron Belkin of San Francisco State University and James Druckman of Northwestern University’s Institute for Policy Research openly encouraged Democrats to pack the Supreme Court, asserting the party would face little political fallout, if any. The study was funded by the progressive group Take Back the Court, which has openly championed court packing as a solution to a conservative judiciary.
In the study, participants were asked to choose between two hypotheticals: a “status quo” scenario and a scenario in which a Democratic Party candidate proposes court-packing to “bring greater balance to the court” while the Republican Party candidate laments how it would be “a threat to the independence of the judiciary and the rights of all Americans by radical liberals trying to change the rules so a few cities in New York and California can impose their will on the rest of us.” According to the study, scenario two had almost no impact on people’s choices.
Even the late liberal Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and her colleague Stephen Breyer have denounced the proposition of court-packing. Speaking with <a href="https://www.npr.org/2019/07/24/744633713/justice-ginsburg-i-am-very-much-alive?utm_term=nprnews&amp;utm_campaign=politics&amp;utm_source=twitter.com&amp;utm_medium=social" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">NPR</a>, Ginsburg criticized past attempts to pack the Supreme Court, such as when President Franklin D. Roosevelt attempted to do so in the 1930s.
“Nine seems to be a good number,” the justice said. “It’s been that way for a long time. I think it was a bad idea when President Franklin Roosevelt tried to pack the Court.”
Despite Eric Holder&#8217;s passion, court-packing will likely fail, given that Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/joe-manchin-new-era-of-bipartisanship">has said</a> he would oppose it along with the push to end the filibuster.

Earlier this month, the former co-host of &#8220;The View&#8221; snapped back at online critics who mocked a photo she posted of her family, saying it looked like a weird Ralph Lauren ad. In a Facebook post at the time, she lamented about the “many unkind comments” she received and rejected those who might say she should just ignore the haters.
“I posted my family Christmas photo and sadly, there were so many unkind comments. Do you think it’s funny to criticize someone’s children? To make jokes about them? To critique our poses? The direction in which we are looking? Our physical appearance and facial expressions? I wished blessings upon everyone as I shared it in the spirit of a happy new year, yet so many of you came back with jokes about our appearance and criticism of what you thought would have been a better photo,” she said. “Shame on you. It doesn’t matter if you’re 10 or 90 years old, rude is rude. Be better than that. I’m praying for humanity. Manners and respect. If you don’t like something, just move on. There are people and real feelings behind every screen.”
Weeks later, the actress then found herself at the center of another social media hatefest when trolls began to criticize her for following both conservative and progressive political figures on her Instagram and Twitter accounts.
“I read several comments from people, and I think there’s quite a bit of new followers, so thank you if you’re still around for following me here,” <a href="https://www.nydailynews.com/snyde/ny-candance-cameron-bure-addresses-fans-bipartisan-social-media-habits-20210123-narzettnfzdq5mp3pvrhdxnsxe-story.html">she said</a> in an Instagram story. “People that were disappointed or told me that they were unfollowing me because of the people I choose to follow on Instagram. And it’s always strange to me because I follow a very broad range of people — politically, within my work industry and then personal friends and things I like.”
“But a follow does not mean an endorsement,” she added.. “A follow does not mean I agree with everything they say and do. It just means I follow a broad range of people so that I have perspective. I want to know what’s going on in the world, I want to hear different sides of the argument. I follow people in entertainment that I don’t necessarily agree with or act the same way, but I want to hear what our society, what culture is dishing out.”
Speaking with <a href="https://www.eonline.com/news/1230871/why-candace-cameron-bure-isnt-afraid-to-tell-haters-keep-your-mouth-shut">E! </a> on Monday, Bure said that people on the internet need to remember that they are talking to a &#8220;real person.&#8221;
&#8220;You know, people forget that — yes, I&#8217;m a celebrity — but I&#8217;m a real person,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I was simply sharing a family Christmas card. And it&#8217;s so strange to me that people have the audacity to write horrible and negative comments. Like, you would never say that to someone&#8217;s face.&#8221;
Bure said that people need to &#8220;keep their mouth shut.&#8221;
&#8220;It was more about a reminder, like, I&#8217;m sharing the best of what I believe my family is on a Christmas card, so keep your mouth shut,&#8221; she said. &#8220;If you don&#8217;t like it, just scroll on.&#8221;
Last September, a vocal minority of evangelical Christians criticized Candace Cameron Bure for posting a goofy PDA photo with her husband of over 20 years that showed him appearing to cup her breast. At the time, the “Fuller House” actress issued a non-apology, telling people to lighten up.
“For all of the Christians that are questioning my post with my husband’s hand on my boob — my husband of 24 years — thinking it was inappropriate, it makes me laugh because it’s my husband,” <a href="https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/life/entertainment/a33979927/candace-cameron-bure-husband-instagram-post/">she said</a>. “We have so much fun together.”

In an interview with “BBC Newsnight” on Saturday, former Fox News anchor and current podcast host Megyn Kelly placed part of the blame for the breach of the U.S. Capitol on January 6 on the mainstream media, saying that the media hated former President Trump so much, they lost their objectivity, prompting a complete lack of trust in them from the public.
Kelly stated, “&#8217;I remember listening to all of [Trump&#8217;s] disparaging comments about CNN when he first became a national figure as a presidential candidate, and I watched a lot of CNN even though I was on Fox. And I was like this is unfair. CNN may be a little boring, but it’s fair and it’s factual. It’s not biased against Trump. Then they spent the next four years proving him right – proving me wrong,” according to <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9181437/Megyn-Kelly-says-networks-like-CNN-partially-responsible-Capitol-riot.html">the Daily Mail</a>.
“They hated him so much they checked their objectivity, and it wasn’t just CNN, all of them did,” Kelly continued. “They just couldn’t check their own personal feelings about him. Either that, or they signed on to what I call the Jorge Ramos theory of covering Trump. He was at Univision, and he advocated, prior to Trump’s election, that we needed to cover him differently; that you needed to outwardly call him a racist, sexist, misogynist, all of it, and that that was important for history, and I think too many journalists agreed with that, at their own peril. Part of the reason we saw what happened at the Capitol here two weeks ago was because there’s been a complete lack of trust, a destruction of trust in the media, and people don’t know where to turn for true information, they don’t trust the media anymore. And it’s a major problem.”
Kelly added, “We could have a little less crazy rhetoric from the White House, but it’s not going to change how divided we are here in America because Trump was the symptom of those divisions, not the cause of them.”
One year ago, Kelly appeared on HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher,” where she <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/watch-megyn-kelly-talks-intense-media-bias-and-cancel-culture-on-bill-maher/">eviscerated the media</a>, saying that the media was “broken.”
Kelly told Maher:

Later, Kelly added that the “liberal slant in the media” got worse once Trump took office:

CNN wasn&#8217;t that way. I used to watch CNN all the time when I was at Fox. However, suggested Kelly, CNN had become “the thing Trump said they were,” and was “indistinguishable from MSNBC.”

Top former military officials and combat veterans have come to the defense of Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) after a far-left publication published a hit piece on him over the weekend claiming that he falsified his military service record.
Salon <a href="https://www.salon.com/2021/01/22/sen-tom-cotton-campaigned-on-his-experience-as-an-army-ranger--but-he-didnt-have-any/">claims</a> that when Cotton launched his political career during his 2012 congressional campaign that &#8220;he felt compelled to repeatedly falsify that honorable military record&#8221; by &#8220;claiming to have been &#8216;a U.S. Army Ranger in Iraq and Afghanistan,&#8217; and, in a campaign ad, to have &#8216;volunteered to be an Army Ranger.'&#8221;
&#8220;In reality, Cotton was never part of the 75th Ranger Regiment, the elite unit that plans and conducts joint special military operations as part of the U.S. Army Special Operations Command,&#8221; the article continued. &#8220;Rather, Cotton attended the Ranger School, a two-month-long, small-unit tactical infantry course that literally anyone in the military is eligible to attend. Soldiers who complete the course earn the right to wear the Ranger tab — a small arch that reads &#8216;Ranger&#8217; — but in the eyes of the military, that does not make them an actual Army Ranger.&#8221;
Adding to the story, far-left Rep. Jason Crow (D-CO), who has been accused of repeatedly <a href="https://twitter.com/joelpollak/status/1353508601206173697">lying</a> while in Congress, tweeted: &#8220;Hey @SenTomCotton, unless you wore one of these berets you shouldn&#8217;t be calling yourself a Ranger. Truth matters.&#8221;
Numerous top former military officials and combat veterans came to Cotton&#8217;s defense in response to the hit piece.
Retired Command Sgt. Maj. Rick Merritt, a former regimental sergeant major of the 75th Ranger Regiment, <a href="https://www.arkansasonline.com/news/2021/jan/24/article-questions-cottons-status-as-army-ranger/">told</a> the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette that the attacks on Cotton&#8217;s record were &#8220;so absurd.&#8221; The local newspaper noted that none of Cotton&#8217;s political opponents have ever challenged his Army Ranger credentials.
&#8220;It&#8217;s unfair. It&#8217;s almost slanderous,&#8221; Merritt said. &#8220;He&#8217;s 100% a Ranger. &#8230; He will always be a Ranger. An attack on him is an attack on every veteran who has served honorably.&#8221;
Retired General Raymond A. Thomas III, who served as the 11th Commander of U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM), slammed Crow over his tweet, writing: &#8220;First, wear your beret correctly. ABC News on Sunday edited a clip of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer&#8217;s recent bungling of a speech in which he accused former President Donald Trump of allegedly having &#8220;incited an erection.&#8221;
Speaking on the floor of the U.S. Senate last Friday, Schumer said, “But make no mistake: there will be a trial and when the trial ends, senators will have to decide if they believe Donald John Trump incited the erection — the insurrection— against the United States.”
“Schumer was informing senators about the plans for an impeachment trial of the ex-president,&#8221; <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/schumer-unfortunate-trump-gaffe-senate">Fox News</a> noted. &#8220;The House last week impeached the president for ‘incitement of insurrection’ for his alleged role in encouraging protesters who went on to storm the Capitol. It was at that point when Schumer made a somewhat phallic flub.&#8221;

President Donald Trump&#8217;s political team disavowed &#8220;Patriot Party&#8221; groups that have filed with the Federal Elections Commission (FEC) in recent days following news reports that the former president was considering starting his own party.
&#8220;On January 22, 2021, Patriot Party filed a Form 1 (Statement of Organization) listing DJTFP as a participant in purported joint fundraising activities under 11 C.F.R. 102.17,&#8221; Donald J. Trump for President Inc., the Trump&#8217;s official campaign committee, said in a filing. &#8220;DJTFP did not authorize the filing of this Form 1, has not entered into any joint fundraising agreement to fundraise through Patriot Party, and has no knowledge of Patriot Party&#8217;s activities whatsoever.&#8221;
&#8220;To be clear: DJTFP has no affiliation with Patriot Party, which is not authorized by Mr. Trump or DJTFP,&#8221; the filing continued. &#8220;DJTFP is placing this disavowal notice on the public record out of concern for confusion among the public, which may be misled to believe that Patriot Party&#8217;s activities have been authorized by Mr. Trump or DJTFP &#8212; or that contributions to this unauthorized committee are being made to DJTFP &#8212; when that is not true.&#8221;
A Trump spokesperson said in a statement, &#8220;We are not supportive of this effort, have nothing to do with it and only know about it through public reporting.&#8221;
Bloomberg News <a href="https://www.detroitnews.com/story/news/politics/2021/01/25/trump-campaign-disavows-notice-linking-him-patriot-party/4250579001/">reported</a> that Trump &#8220;has no plans to break from the Republican Party to pursue a third party.&#8221;
Axios <a href="https://www.axios.com/trump-political-team-disavows-patriot-party-groups-f97c1a07-2541-4ba9-baee-6e31ced88bfa.html">noted</a> that numerous groups had falsely claimed ties to the president in FEC filings in recent days, including the MAGA Patriot Party National Committee.
The Wall Street Journal had reported last week that Trump had floated the idea by some of his close advisers, although it wasn&#8217;t clear at the time just how serious he was about the idea.
“In last 24 hours, after floating through a few folks that he was considering creating a third-party as a way to keep Senate Rs in line ahead of impeachment, Trump has been talked out of that and is making clear to people he isn’t pursuing it,” NYT reporter Maggie Haberman wrote. “Trump has started to believe there are fewer votes to convict than there would have been if the vote had been held almost immediately after Jan. 6.”

In a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-has-political-plans-for-2022-abandons-idea-to-create-third-party">statement</a>, top Trump adviser Jason Miller responded over the weekend to reports that Trump had drafted an “enemies list of Republicans for his Patriot Party to challenge in primaries.”
“The President has made clear his goal is to win back the House and Senate for Republicans in 2022,” Miller said. “There’s nothing that’s actively being planned regarding an effort outside of that, but it’s completely up to Republican Senators if this is something that becomes more serious.”

Dr. Anthony Fauci, who early in the pandemic said Americans need not wear masks, has once again changed his recommendation.
Fauci, an immunologist and director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases who served on President Trump&#8217;s White House Coronavirus Task Force and is now President Biden&#8217;s chief medical adviser on COVID-19, now says wearing two masks is likely more effective than wearing one.
&#8220;If you have a physical covering with one layer, you put another layer on it; just makes common sense that it likely would be more effective,&#8221; Fauci told <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/fauci-says-drop-covid-cases-not-due-vaccine-we-don-n1255505" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">NBC News</a> on Monday.
Back in March, Fauci said &#8220;there’s no reason to be walking around with a mask.&#8221;
“When you’re in the middle of an outbreak, wearing a mask might make people feel a little bit better and it might even block a droplet, but it’s not providing the perfect protection that people think that it is,&#8221; the doctor <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/preventing-coronavirus-facemask-60-minutes-2020-03-08/">said</a> on CBS News.
But the response to the virus has been evolving since then. Soon after Fauci made his comments, experts — including the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) — said Americans should wear masks, citing estimates that 40% or more of those infected were asymptomatic but could still spread the virus.
“We were not aware that 40% to 45% of people were asymptomatic, nor were we aware that a substantial proportion of people who get infected get infected from people who are without symptoms. That makes it overwhelmingly important for everyone to wear a mask,” Fauci <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/world/live-news/coronavirus-pandemic-09-22-20-intl/h_bf089a39912dd3b166749c4ba471f143?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+rss%2Fcnn_topstories+%28RSS%3A+CNN+-+Top+Stories%29">said</a> in September, noting that “the data now are very, very clear.”
Now, there&#8217;s a move on to urge people to wear two masks.
The New York Times said earlier this month that if one mask works, maybe two will be twice as nice.
&#8220;Football coaches do it. President-elects do it. Even science-savvy senators do it. As cases of the coronavirus continue to surge on a global scale, some of the nation’s most prominent people have begun to double up on masks — a move that researchers say is increasingly being backed up by data,&#8221; the paper <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/12/health/coronavirus-masks-transmission.html">wrote</a>.
The Times cites Linsey Marr, an expert in virus transmission at Virginia Tech, who said “if you combine multiple layers, you start achieving pretty high efficiencies” of blocking viruses from exiting, and even entering, the nose or mouth.
Of course, there&#8217;s a drawback: “We run the risk of making it too hard to breathe.&#8221;
The CDC says COVID-19 spreads &#8220;mainly from person to person through respiratory droplets. Respiratory droplets travel into the air when you cough, sneeze, talk, shout, or sing. These droplets can then land in the mouths or noses of people who are near you or they may breathe these droplets in.&#8221;
And the federal agency now says that &#8220;a cloth mask also offers some protection to you too. How well it protects you from breathing in the virus likely depends on the fabrics used and how your mask is made (e.g. the type of fabric, the number of layers of fabric, how well the mask fits). CDC is currently studying these factors&#8221; and says more evaluation is needed.

President Joe Biden is facing backlash across the country after he signed an Executive Order last week that canceled the Keystone XL pipeline, a move that also drew criticism from Canada.
The move by Biden comes after he signed Executive Orders on a wide range of issues last week during his first days in office, including orders on climate and energy matters.
Josh Senk, general manager of Michels Corporation, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/fox6news/videos/wi-congressmen-rebuke-president-bidens-halt-of-keystone-pipeline/893329908165242/">slammed</a> Biden during a press conference in Wisconsin, saying, “The recent actions of President Joe Biden, the Executive Order halting the construction of the Keystone pipeline has effected Michels, thousands of union trade members across the country, and hundreds of guys that specifically work in Wisconsin.”
Senk later said that &#8220;hundreds of guys&#8221; have already been laid off.
The Associated Press <a href="https://apnews.com/article/joe-biden-new-mexico-us-news-coronavirus-pandemic-a07cb29630f79112eced658f18db0e51?utm_source=Twitter&amp;utm_medium=AP&amp;utm_campaign=SocialFlow">noted</a> that local leaders in New Mexico were worried about the impact that Biden&#8217;s decision would have on their state and leaders in Utah have asked Biden to reconsider his decision.
“During his inauguration, President Biden spoke about bringing our nation together. Eliminating drilling on public lands will cost thousands of New Mexicans their jobs and destroy what’s left of our state’s economy,” Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway told the AP. “How does that bring us together? Environmental efforts should be fair and well-researched, not knee-jerk mandates that just hurt an already impoverished state.”
Native American tribes have also reportedly been angered by Biden&#8217;s decision to cancel the pipeline.
In a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/your-order-is-a-direct-attack-native-american-tribe-condemns-biden-administrations-secretarial-order">letter</a> to the Biden administration, Luke Duncan, the chairman of the Ute Indian Tribe Business Committee, wrote:

Your order is a direct attack on our economy, sovereignty, and our right to self-determination. Indian lands are not federal public lands. Any action on our lands and interests can only be taken after effective tribal consultation.
Order No. 3395 violates the United States treaty and trust responsibilities to the Ute Indian Tribe and violates important principles of tribal sovereignty and self-determination. Your order was also issued in violation (of) our government-to-government relationship. Executive Order No. 13175 on Consultation and Coordination with Indian Tribal Governments, and Interior’s own Policy on Consultation with Tribal Governments.
