Former Acting Director of National Intelligence Richard Grenell slammed former national security adviser John Bolton on Thursday night over his soon-to-be-released book.
&#8220;Well, first of all, let’s talk about his reputation at the NSC. He ran an NSC that leaked like crazy,&#8221; Grenell began. &#8220;Everything that happened leaked out of the NSC. Is it no surprise that somehow all of these stories didn’t leak when everything else was leaking.&#8221;
&#8220;I have to say, everyone should be troubled by someone who was unwilling to testify under oath but then is willing to speak under a book deal, and to me this is exactly what’s happening,&#8221; Grenell continued. &#8220;They saved salacious stories in order to sell books. There’s no other explanation for this because clearly this is not the President Trump that we know, and we had all sorts of signs that John Bolton was going to go his own way anyway.&#8221;
Grenell then highlighted policy problems that the administration allegedly had with Bolton, saying, &#8220;To want to start a war with Iran when you’re the national security adviser for the president who ran on bringing our troops home, who ran on trying to stop endless wars, and to talk to the North Koreans instead of picking fights, this is yet another contradiction for Bolton.&#8221;
&#8220;He didn’t want to talk to the North Koreans, he is somebody who would rather pick the fights and push the policy in a very direct way,&#8221; Grenell continued. &#8220;That wasn’t President Trump, he wanted to make sure that we weren’t going to go into wars.&#8221;
Grenell added, &#8220;I’ve got my own situation going on because of John Bolton being different than what the president was. When it comes to Kosovo and Serbia, we’re having both of those two together at the White House next Saturday to talk about historic movement and agreement, and yet I am fighting constantly about this rumor about land swaps between the two, and that’s not Trump’s policy. But when you dig deep, both sides say that’s what John Bolton said. And so I’m fighting all of the rumors that persisted because Bolton was pursuing his own policy rather than President Trump’s policy.&#8221;

INGRAHAM: Well, it was a disastrous pick. Bolton didn’t agree with any of Trump’s views about drawing down forces and in one part of the book he’s just enraged that Trump didn’t want to bomb the heck out of Syria after they shot down our unmanned drone. The president decided after looking at the projections for collateral damage and deaths, he said too many body bags. To me that’s a president who’s in control of the data, knows it, and says, you know, I want to hold off. That’s prudence.
GRENELL: Yeah, I know. Look, you know, I think that story was actually about Iran if I remember correctly.
INGRAHAM: Iran, excuse me. Iran, not Syria.

This is no longer a fight about Republicans versus Democrats. This is a fight of Washington, D.C., versus the rest of America.
INGRAHAM: Yeah, the swamp and those who want all the money in the swamp to marinate in all these lobbies and all these groups. I mean, he wants to make big money. Okay, he can go make big money but try not being a creep.</blockquote>

Fox News host Tucker Carlson reported on Thursday evening that the stepmother of Atlanta police officer Garrett Rolfe, the officer who allegedly shot and killed Rayshard Brooks, has been fired from her job at a mortgage company in the area.
&#8220;Until today, his stepmother, her name is Melissa Rolfe, was the HR director at a place called Equity Prime Mortgage in Atlanta, Georgia,&#8221; Carlson said. &#8220;But today, she was let go. She&#8217;s no longer in that role, apparently she was fired and her only crime was being officer Rolfe&#8217;s stepmother.&#8221;
&#8220;According to a source familiar with the matter who spoke to this program, Rolfe was promised that her job was safe, but today she was told, &#8216;We have to terminate our relationship with you,'&#8221; Carlson continued. &#8220;No other explanation was offered and honestly no other explanation was needed. It was obvious what happened.&#8221;
&#8220;Rolfe has already been scrubbed from the company&#8217;s website, wiped away as the Bolshevik&#8217;s did with those who lost favor with Joseph Stalin,&#8221; Carlson added. &#8220;That will keep happening until lawmakers decided to resist the mob and protect ordinary people from its predations. This is where the country is going, it&#8217;s becoming a place where you can be punished for the supposed misdeeds of your relatives. You don&#8217;t want to be that country. All of us should put on the breaks immediately.&#8221;
Later in the program, Carlson said that the company reached out and claimed that Rolfe was fired for social media posts, but did not elaborate on what the posts were or what they said.
Carlson concluded, &#8220;The bottom line is, it seems pretty clear they fired this woman because of who her step son was, and just to restate the obvious, that shouldn&#8217;t happen in this country because it&#8217;s wrong and people should say it&#8217;s wrong, or it will continue to keep happening.&#8221;

The company released a statement on their Twitter account that did not mention Rolfe&#8217;s stepmother&#8217;s name but appeared to allude to her termination and stressed that the company was committed to diversity. The statement said:

CNN law enforcement analyst Charles Ramsey blamed the media on Wednesday when asked about why large numbers of police officers are resigning across the country in recent weeks after the death of George Floyd.
&#8220;Chief Ramsey, you have a phenomenon now in a number of police departments, in a number of communities, where you have police officers who were resigning in numbers in the midst of this,&#8221; CNN host Jim Sciutto said. &#8220;And I wonder, if you were still commanding the police departments in Philadelphia or New York, how would you explain to your officers that this is not targeting police officers in general. It is targeting certain bad behaviors that lead to bad and sometimes deadly outcomes. How would you get that message across?&#8221;
&#8220;Well, I mean, listen, obviously you&#8217;d be, you know, visiting roll calls and so forth, but that&#8217;s a hard sell because, unfortunately, there&#8217;s really not a whole lot of balances taking place in terms of the reporting, in terms of the demonstrators,&#8221; Ramsey responded. &#8220;And don&#8217;t get me wrong, we need demonstrations. I mean there needs to be police reform. But in the &#8212; I think one of the consequences of what&#8217;s going on right now, police are being demonized to a large extent.&#8221;
&#8220;That&#8217;s the good cops that really are looking at this saying, you know, why am I bothering?&#8221; Ramsey continued. &#8220;Why am I doing this? So I think we need to find that balance and encourage the good police officers to continue doing what they do, but also help work to &#8212; to get rid of those officers that should not be police officers. So we need to find a little better balance because right now morale is really, you know, weighed down, and understandably so.&#8221;
When pressed by host Alisyn Camerota on the issue, Ramsey said, &#8220;Well, I mean, just &#8212; wherever you can find balance, find a balance. St. Cloud, Minnesota, the other day, a police officer was shot by an 18-year-old black youth.&#8221;
&#8220;The kid was not injured. In Philadelphia, last August, five police officers shot by an individual who was taken into custody without injury. I mean there&#8217;s been a lot of examples out there where police have used a tremendous amount of restraint. And all I&#8217;m saying is, if there&#8217;s balance there, then maybe we can start to get that message across to the men and women because right now, every time you turn on the television, all you&#8217;re seeing are the bad shootings, the use of force, and so forth,&#8221; Ramsey continued. &#8220;But, without balance, it does affect moral and you&#8217;re going to get some of these young cops that will say, listen, I can find some other line of work. I don&#8217;t need this. And that&#8217;s unfortunate.&#8221;

We report on the deadly encounters. Not all of &#8212; I mean on NEW DAY we also report on, you know, at the end of our show, &#8220;The Good Stuff&#8221; and good things that police do all the time. But I understand why that&#8217;s being eclipsed right now by these deadly encounters.
RAMSEY: Yes.
ALISYN CAMEROTA: And so what&#8217;s the answer?

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation responded to Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard&#8217;s press conference on Wednesday — in which he announced criminal charges against the two officers who were involved in the recent incident involving the death of Rayshard Brooks — by stating that they were not notified that it was going to happen and that the investigation was not over.
&#8220;The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested by the Atlanta Police Department on Friday night, June 12th, to investigate an officer involved shooting at the Wendy’s Restaurant on University Avenue. We are in the process of conducting this investigation,&#8221; the bureau said in a statement. &#8220;Although we have made significant progress in the case, we have not completed our work. Our goal in every officer involved shooting case we are requested to review, is to complete a thorough, impartial investigation before we submit the file to the respective District Attorney’s Office.&#8221;
&#8220;The GBI was not aware of today’s press conference before it was conducted,&#8221; the statement continued. &#8220;We were not consulted on the charges filed by the District Attorney. Despite today’s occurrence, the GBI will complete its mission of completing an impartial and thorough investigation of this incident and we will submit the file, once completed, to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office.&#8221;
GBI&#8217;s statement regarding Howard&#8217;s decision to announce charges against the two officers comes as Howard is facing an election runoff, is reportedly under criminal investigation, and has been <a href="https://www.ajc.com/news/crime--law/administrator-alleges-paul-howard-sexually-harassed-her/LbsYvyiyUWgbCJxW1xQexO/">repeatedly</a> accused of <a href="https://www.ajc.com/news/local/fulton-slapped-with-another-harassment-lawsuit/vuEoikax2eiBbC4OlNLP4L/">sexual harassment</a>. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution <a href="https://www.ajc.com/news/local/gbi-opens-probe-fulton-paul-howard-over-use-nonprofit-funds/cgSq6UgzmHbCfGNJcxMJ6O/">reported</a> in early May:
<blockquote>The GBI has opened an investigation of Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard and his use of a nonprofit to funnel at least $140,000 in city of Atlanta funds to supplement his salary, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and Channel 2 Action News have learned.
The criminal investigation comes at a time when Howard, Fulton’s DA since 1997, is being challenged in the Democratic primary for reelection and is facing allegations of sexual harassment, which he strongly denies. [&#8230;]
Howard is also facing a state ethics complaint for not disclosing he was a chief executive of the nonprofit, People Partnering for Progress, in personal financial statements. On April 15, the Georgia Transparency and Campaign Finance Commission charged Howard with a dozen disclosure violations, most of them involving PPP.</blockquote>
Howard announced during a press conference on Wednesday that Officer Garrett Rolfe was facing 11 charges, including felony murder, for his alleged involvement in the death of Brooks. Howard also announced that the other police officer on scene, Devin Brosnan, was facing three charges, including aggravated assault and violation of oath.
Howard said, “We have concluded at the time Mr. Brooks was shot that he did not pose an immediate threat of death or serious physical injury to the officer or officers.” Howard later acknowledged that as Brooks was resisting arrest and running from the police that he took a taser from one of the officers and fired it at Rolfe.
Just a couple of weeks ago, Howard <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/da-says-brooks-wasnt-threat-toward-cop-he-shot-taser-at-said-two-weeks-ago-taser-is-considered-a-deadly-weapon">announced</a> charges against a police officer who pointed a taser at a person because a taser was considered to be a deadly weapon under Georgia law.

Oklahoma State head football coach Mike Gundy faced an outrage mob this week on Twitter that was led by one of his top players who disapproved of a t-shirt that he wore while fishing that said &#8220;OAN,&#8221; which stands for One America News Network — a conservative publication that some have <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/article/oann-trump.html">criticized</a> for airing controversial segments.
Chuba Hubbard, a running back from Canada, saw a picture of Gundy wearing the shirt on Twitter and responded by writing on Monday: &#8220;I will not stand for this.. This is completely insensitive to everything going on in society, and it’s unacceptable. I will not be doing anything with Oklahoma State until things CHANGE.&#8221;

The tweet was retweeted tens of thousands of times and quickly generated headlines that Gundy attempted to quell by releasing a <a href="https://twitter.com/Hubbard_RMN/status/1272673812795084801">video</a> with Hubbard, which didn&#8217;t do much.
Gundy later released a video late on Tuesday in which he apologized for wearing the t-shirt.
“I had a great meeting with our team today. Our players expressed their feelings as individuals and as team members,” Gundy said. “They helped me see through their eyes how the t-shirt effected their hearts. Once I learned how that network felt about Black Lives Matter, I was disgusted and knew it was completely unacceptable to me.”
“I want to apologize to all members of our team, former players, and their families for the pain and discomfort that has been caused over the last two days,” Gundy continued. “Black lives matter to me, our players matter to me. These meetings with our team have been eye-opening and will result in positive changes for Oklahoma State football. I sincerely hope the Oklahoma State family near and far will accept my humble apology as we move forward.”

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said during an interview on Tuesday that he wants a team to sign former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick and that if Kaepernick does not make it back on the field, then he is invited to the &#8220;table&#8221; to &#8220;help&#8221; and &#8220;guide&#8221; the NFL on social issues.
&#8220;Well, listen, if he wants to resume his career in the NFL, then obviously it&#8217;s going to take a team to make that decision,&#8221; Goodell <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/29315784/encourage-team-sign-colin-kaepernick">said</a> during an interview with ESPN. &#8220;But I welcome that, support a club making that decision and encourage them to do that.
&#8220;If his efforts are not on the field but continuing to work in this space, we welcome him to that table and to help us, guide us, help us make better decisions about the kinds of things that need to be done in the communities,&#8221; Goodell continued. &#8220;We have invited him in before, and we want to make sure that everybody&#8217;s welcome at that table and trying to help us deal with some very complex, difficult issues that have been around for a long time.&#8221;
Goodell added, &#8220;But I hope we&#8217;re at a point now where everybody&#8217;s committed to making long-term, sustainable change.&#8221;
Kaepernick has been widely criticized for some of his actions, including kneeling during the national anthem, <a href="https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/colin-kaepernick-assata-shakur/">donating</a> money to a group honoring convicted cop killer and <a href="https://www.fbi.gov/wanted/wanted_terrorists/joanne-deborah-chesimard/@@download.pdf">wanted terrorist</a> Assata Shakur, <a href="https://www.nbcsports.com/philadelphia/philadelphia-eagles/colin-kaepernick-protests-rogue-cops-socks-pigs-police-officers">wearing</a> socks portraying police officers as pigs, and <a href="https://www.miamiherald.com/sports/spt-columns-blogs/armando-salguero/article117033883.html">wearing</a> shirts of brutal Cuban dictator Fidel Castro.
Kaepernick has also <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/colin-kaepernick-blasts-racist-american-terrorist-attacks-in-apparent-reference-to-iran">claimed</a> that the United States has conducted &#8220;American terrorist attacks against Black and Brown people for the expansion of American imperialism.&#8221; That remark was featured in a tweet from Kaepernick and came after U.S. forces killed Qassem Soleimani, the head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Quds Force, which is a designated terrorist organization.
In November, the NFL <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/nfl-makes-major-move-to-help-colin-kaepernick-secure-position-on-nfl-team">organized</a> a private workout for Kaepernick in Atlanta in an apparent attempt to help him secure a spot in the league.
“The NFL arranged this workout opportunity for Colin Kaepernick, and teams will have the opportunity to evaluate his readiness and level of interest in resuming his NFL career,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter tweeted at the time. “His agents have said he wants to return to the NFL, and the league hopes this provides that chance.”
Kaepernick, who has been criticized for kneeling during the national anthem, abruptly cancelled the workout right before it was scheduled to take place because he said that he wanted to have his own camera crew there to film it and wanted to open the workout session to the media.
&#8220;The workout was originally set for 3 p.m. and was to be held at the Atlanta Falcons&#8217; practice facility in Flowery Branch,&#8221; CBS News <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/colin-kaepernick-workout-holds-workout-at-new-location-without-nfls-approval/">reported</a>. &#8220;At 2:30, representatives for the free agent quarterback informed the league that Kaepernick would instead be conducting the workout at 4 p.m. at Drew High School in Riverdale, Georgia.&#8221;
The new location for the workout that Kaepernick gave was 60 miles away.

&#8220;We will be inflexible when it comes to tackling racism, anti-Semitism and discrimination, and new strong decisions will be made to reinforce the egality of chances,&#8221; Macron said, according to a translation provided by TIME. &#8220;But this noble fight is perverted when it turns into communitarianism, into a false rewriting of history.&#8221;
&#8220;This is unacceptable when it is picked up by separatists. I tell you very clearly tonight my dear fellow citizens, the Republic will not erase any trace or name from its history,&#8221; Macron continued. &#8220;It will not forget any of its deeds or take down any statue. As reported by <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2020/06/14/macron-says-france-wont-tear-down-statues-amid-anti-racism-protests-318378">Politico</a>, Macron has come under increased pressure over the last two weeks to &#8220;bring down statues and revisit other works of art that honor French historical figures involved in slavery and France&#8217;s colonial history amid protests against police brutality and racism.&#8221; This radical movement to tear down any references to colonial history has swept other European countries, including Belgium and the U.K., where authorities have had to take measures to protect some of the nations&#8217; monuments.
&#8220;The statue of Winston Churchill in Parliament Square is a permanent reminder of his achievement in saving this country – and the whole of Europe – from a fascist and racist tyranny,&#8221; Prime Minister Boris Johnson said in a tweet. &#8220;It is absurd and shameful that this national monument should today be at risk of attack by violent protestors. Yes, he sometimes expressed opinions that were and are unacceptable to us today, but he was a hero, and he fully deserves his memorial.&#8221;
&#8220;We cannot now try to edit or censor our past. We cannot pretend to have a different history. The statues in our cities and towns were put up by previous generations,&#8221; Johnson continued. &#8220;They had different perspectives, different understandings of right and wrong. But those statues teach us about our past, with all its faults. To tear them down would be to lie about our history, and impoverish the education of generations to come.&#8221;

Former Acting Director of National Intelligence Richard Grenell said that his decision to declassify numerous documents related to the Russia investigation came from a place of wanting to be transparent with the American people because &#8220;transparency is never political.&#8221;
&#8220;The Russian investigation had all sorts of red flags from the beginning,&#8221; Grenell told Fox News on Sunday. &#8220;And when you look at the transcripts, when you look at the declassified footnotes from some of the investigations, it&#8217;s clear that there were multiple people from multiple agencies that were raising red flags.&#8221;
&#8220;However, what was really sad to me is that those red flags and those voices were pushed aside, classified, and never shown to the public. And so very few people knew the truth. And the silence from those people was really shocking,&#8221; Grenell continued. &#8220;And so what I wanted to do was be transparent. Transparency is never political. Transparency is what the American people demand. And it&#8217;s what Washington, D.C., is very uncomfortable with.&#8221;

Ric Grenell, as acting director of national security, declassified 53 important witness transcripts that told us so much about the origins of the Russia probe.

RICHARD GRENELL, FORMER ACTING U.S. DIRECTOR OF NATIONAL INTELLIGENCE: The Russian investigation had all sorts of red flags from the beginning.
And when you look at the transcripts, when you look at the declassified footnotes from some of the investigations, it&#8217;s clear, Maria, that there were multiple people from multiple agencies that were raising red flags.
However, what was really sad to me is that those red flags and those voices were pushed aside, classified, and never shown to the public. And so very few people knew the truth. And the silence from those people was really shocking.
And so what I wanted to do was be transparent. Transparency is never political. Transparency is what the American people demand. And it&#8217;s what Washington, D.C., is very uncomfortable with.
BARTIROMO: I remember a text that Peter Strzok sent to his then girlfriend Lisa Page, and he says: &#8220;Our sisters are leaking like mad,&#8221; our sisters being the CIA.
We had Ron Johnson on the other day, a couple weeks ago here on this program, and his investigation is centering on the transition of power from the Obama administration to the Trump administration. And during that transition, when Trump was fully in place, there were 125 leaks during the first 126 days of the administration.
When you compare that to the Obama first 126 days, there were eight leaks, eight, vs. 125. Bush, nine leaks vs. 125. Leaking classified data is a felony, right?
GRENELL: Totally.
And Senator Ron Johnson is doing a really great job. So is Senator Grassley. They are really focused on trying to get to the truth.
I think that transition period is key. And it&#8217;s why, once Donald Trump won the election in 2016, all the way through to Inauguration Day, that period of time is when we know who is coming into the White House. We know the team, like General Flynn and his team and President Trump, that&#8217;s when we&#8217;re supposed to have the Obama administration or the current administration begin to hand off and have a transition time.
That&#8217;s why we have an election in November and an inauguration in January. It&#8217;s for a peaceful transition of power. That was blown by the Obama administration. And I just don&#8217;t think that unmasking during the transition period is appropriate, especially at the levels that they did.
And we even had Joe Biden, the vice president of the United States at the time, unmasking in this transition period. And I believe it was in January, when they literally were on the downslope to Trump&#8217;s inauguration.
This is inappropriate. I think you can make the argument for unmasking at other times. But to unmask during this transition period, to me, is another level. And it really shows how the beginning of the excuse of why Hillary Clinton lost, how this was developed.
They were so shocked that Donald Trump won that it must have not have been because the American people just freely chose Donald Trump, but because of some other thing.
And, remember, we had 67 Democrats refuse to come to the inauguration, the peaceful transition of power.
BARTIROMO: That&#8217;s right.
GRENELL: You know, Maria, if that would have happened in another country, the State Department would have called it out and said, this is unacceptable.
BARTIROMO: Right, which is why I think people are not going to trust the FBI or the top of the CIA until they see accountability.
GRENELL: Look, what I will say is, is, I really encourage people to read the footnotes.
When you read these footnotes, you clearly see that the intelligence community, not just the FBI, but multiple agencies, knew that the charges were flimsy or that the Russians from the very beginning were wreaking havoc on the process by pushing propaganda into the Steele dossier.
People knew this, Maria. There were red flags from the very beginning. And those voices within the intelligence community were pushed aside or classified, or both, and most people never saw the warning signs. And that&#8217;s exactly the problem, I think, that we have to drop back and solve.
BARTIROMO: Do you believe there is a deep state?
GRENELL: Look, I think that what I would say is, is that there are incredible public servants within the intelligence community who themselves are really annoyed by the bad apples.
There&#8217;s no question that we have specific people, and it&#8217;s more than just a few, who are in jobs, using their political bias to manipulate the process. There&#8217;s no question of that. And it happens on both sides of the aisle.
BARTIROMO: Yes.
You dealt with these guys. You dealt with Adam Schiff a lot. And you were trying to be transparent and declassify this stuff. But he stopped you, right?
I remember interviewing Nunes and Ratcliffe. They had sent letters to Adam Schiff, saying, we want this and we want that. We sent a letter to the FBI. We want these documents. They were not releasing them.
GRENELL: That was a process that I couldn&#8217;t believe was stopped.
To be honest, it shouldn&#8217;t have been. It should have been released a long time ago. It was overclassified. And our country suffered because it was overclassified.
BARTIROMO: Yes.
GRENELL: I will say, when dealing with the Hill, somebody like Senator Mark Warner, who I had a phone call scheduled to walk him through the reform efforts that I was going to do, and he canceled that phone call, and then refused to schedule the call.
So I never spoke to him the entire time that I was there, even though he was the lead Senate Democrat on the intelligence community. Never spoke to him. Tried several times.
But then I would see him go public and say that: Grenell is not coordinating with me. Grenell is not coordinating with the appropriate committees. And they would slam me.
Look, this is the ways of Washington, is that they say one thing and they do another. The American people are really outraged by this type of stuff.
BARTIROMO: They really are.
GRENELL: I stayed silent and tried to just take the hits.
But the fact of the matter is, I think that it&#8217;s wrong.
BARTIROMO: Yes.
As we wrap up here, John Ratcliffe is your successor as the director of national intelligence. Are there other things that should be declassified that Congressman Ratcliffe is going to be overseeing?
What&#8217;s most important that we don&#8217;t know yet, Ric?
GRENELL: Look, I think that this entire Russian investigation, the beginning of it, how it was developed needs to &#8212; somebody needs to look at what is classified and whether or not that needs to come clean.
We started that process. I have coordinated with John. He&#8217;s a great guy. He&#8217;s really focused and smart on getting to the truth. He&#8217;s removing politics from the equation, and just looking at the facts and what needs to be done.
So, I have great faith in our new director of national intelligence, John Ratcliffe.

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) struggled on Sunday when pressed by CNN&#8217;s Jake Tapper about who will be responsible for investigating crimes and locking up criminals if the Minneapolis Police Department is dismantled.
&#8220;So, let&#8217;s talk about that, because you have talked about the dismantling, the need to dismantle the Minneapolis Police Department,&#8221; Tapper said. &#8220;What takes its place, and — if you could just decree what takes its place? Who investigates crimes? Who arrests criminals? What happens?&#8221;
Omar, who previously referred to the police department as a &#8220;<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/democrat-ilhan-omar-defund-minneapolis-police-theyre-cancer-we-dont-want-your-damn-reforms">cancer</a>,&#8221; responded, &#8220;So, Minneapolis unanimously just voted on a resolution that will engage the community on a one-year process of what happens as we go through the process of dismantling the department and starting anew.&#8221;
&#8220;A new way forward can&#8217;t be put in place if we have a department that is having a crisis of credibility, if we have a department that&#8217;s led by a chief who&#8217;s suited for racism, if we have a department that hasn&#8217;t solved homicide,&#8221; Omar continued, later adding, &#8220;And so this is our opportunity, you know, as a city, to come together, have the conversation of what public safety looks like, who enforces the most dangerous crimes that take place in our community.&#8221;
Tapper again pressed her for details on what would take the place of law enforcement, to which Omar responded, &#8220;I think that&#8217;s really where the conversation is going wrong, because no one is saying that the community is not going to be kept safe.&#8221;
Omar said that moves to increase police funding &#8220;sounds ludicrous&#8221; to her.

Activists and protesters around the country are rallying around a slogan, defund the police. But that push is also running up against steep opposition, including in the Democratic Party.
Joining me now, Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, who represents part of Minneapolis, also the author of a new book, &#8220;This Is What America Looks Like.&#8221;
Congresswoman, thanks so much for joining us this morning. We have a lot to get to.
But before we do, I do&#8230;
REP. ILHAN OMAR (D-MN): Happy anniversary, Jake.
TAPPER: Oh, thank you so much. I appreciate it.
It&#8217;s the fifth anniversary of STATE OF THE UNION with me. So, thank you very much. I appreciate it.
I want to start with this horrific video of Rayshard Brooks. He was shot and killed by a white police officer in Atlanta on Friday night. Atlanta, a lot of protests and more.
What was your reaction when you saw the video?
OMAR: It&#8217;s, again, a reminder that, you know, police officers can&#8217;t continue to be judge, jury, and executioner.
We&#8217;re not only seeing cases where there is, you know, mortal danger to police officers where they might take a shot, but the cases of people who are subdued being killed by police officers, people who are being shot in the back. It&#8217;s just really quite disheartening to see the continuation of images like this appear.
And I think it&#8217;s a reminder again why, you know, trust in the system as it is right now is so low.
And I think this is really our opportunity to listen to the voices of the mayors of, like San Francisco and others who are really putting forth bold ideas of what it looks like, not only to move away from fully investing in this kind of public safety measures, but also those like Minneapolis who are committing to the dismantlement of a department that is beyond repair, so that the community has the space to come together to reimagine what public safety should look like.
TAPPER: So, let&#8217;s talk about that, because you have talked about the dismantling, the need to dismantle the Minneapolis Police Department.
What takes its place, and &#8212; if you could just decree what takes its place? Who investigates crimes? Who arrests criminals? What happens?
OMAR: Yes.
So, Minneapolis unanimously just voted on a resolution that will engage the community on a one-year process of what happens as we go through the process of dismantling the department and starting anew.
A new way forward can&#8217;t be put in place if we have a department that is having a crisis of credibility, if we have a department that&#8217;s led by a chief who&#8217;s suited for racism, if we have a department that hasn&#8217;t solved homicide. Half of the homicides in Minneapolis Police Department go unsolved.
There have been cases where they have destroyed rape kits. And so you can&#8217;t really reform a department that is rotten to the root. What you can do is rebuild. And so this is our opportunity, you know, as a city, to come together, have the conversation of what public safety looks like, who enforces the most dangerous crimes that take place in our community.
And just like San Francisco did, right now, they&#8217;re going &#8212; they&#8217;re moving towards a process where there is a separation of the kind of crimes that solicit the help of officers and the kind of crimes that we should have someone else respond to.
TAPPER: Well, just&#8230;
OMAR: And so this is really &#8212; this is, again, just the process of going through this together.

TAPPER: You&#8217;re &#8212; just to be clear, though, you&#8217;re not saying that there&#8217;s nothing that takes its place. You&#8217;re not saying&#8230;
OMAR: Absolutely not.
TAPPER: &#8230; that if a woman is raped &#8212; a woman is raped, there&#8230;
OMAR: I think that&#8217;s really where the conversation is going wrong, because no one is saying that the community is not going to be kept safe.
TAPPER: OK.
OMAR: No one is saying crimes will not be investigated. No one is saying that we are not going to have proper response when community members are in danger.
What we are saying is, the current infrastructure that exists as policing in our city should not exist anymore. And we can&#8217;t go about creating a different process with the same infrastructure in place.
And so dismantling it, and then looking at what funding priorities should look like as we reimagine a new way forward is what needs to happen. And that is truly why you have 13 members unanimously on a city council vote to start this process.
And I know that there are many places where a process like this is needed, many places where they might not go through the drastic process of dismantling.
But just like in Camden, they realized that there was just a department that was beyond reform, as it was. They dismantled it, and they figured out a different way to move forward as a community in regards to providing public safety for one another.
TAPPER: Yes. So&#8230;
OMAR: And that&#8217;s what needs to happen in Minneapolis, and that&#8217;s what we&#8217;re committed to.
TAPPER: So, there are a lot of Democrats, as you know, who disagree with what you&#8217;re talking about.
I just spoke with House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn, who has come out in opposition to the defund movement. He&#8217;s talked about the need to reform. But he said defunding could &#8212; quote &#8212; &#8220;hijack the movement.&#8221; In addition, Joe Biden has said he does not support defunding the police. And, in fact, he&#8217;s proposing $300 million more for community policing. What&#8217;s your response?
OMAR: Well, it sounds ludicrous to me to have people pour out into the streets asking for the system to be transformed, and for us to say, in order for that transformation to happen, we&#8217;re just going to give more money to the system, without really doing any kind of systematic change.
If you had a company that wasn&#8217;t producing, you wouldn&#8217;t just pour money, more money, into it, so that it would produce. You would step back and say, what &#8212; let&#8217;s look at what works, what doesn&#8217;t work, and how do we move forward?
And so I think, for people who really are questioning and talking about this movement, they&#8217;re not paying attention to what the people are asking for.
And, to me, we&#8217;re &#8212; this is not for members of Congress. This isn&#8217;t for the president. This is a municipality issue. This is a state level issue. And so I happen to represent a city that is eager and ready to take on this call and deliver.
TAPPER: Yes.
OMAR: And there are many other cities that are doing this.
TAPPER: Right.
OMAR: And so we do more damage when we say to these people that they&#8217;re &#8212; we don&#8217;t believe in their ability to govern their cities and serve their constituents.
We do better when we say, what do you need in order for you to provide for your constituents a way forward? And we&#8217;re going to be there to support you and cheer you on as you figure out how to keep everyone safe.

A CNN camera crew was attacked and one of their cameras was broken as they attempted to record rioters who were allegedly burning down a Wendy&#8217;s restaurant in Atlanta on Saturday after a black man was killed there the night before by law enforcement officials.
CNN reporter Natasha Chen wrote on Twitter that rioters attacked one of the cameras with a skateboard and then later told CNN&#8217;s Wolf Blitzer that a security official that was with them advised them to leave because of how violent the situation was becoming.
&#8220;A photojournalist, our producer, and I were trying to get a video of what was happening and there were protesters very angry that we were recording this and tried to block our cameras, to block us,&#8221; Chen said. &#8220;So, the journalist’s camera and to block my cell phone [to prevent us] from taking video. And at that point they got aggressive and our camera, our CNN camera was broken, and so we as a crew decided to step out of that area so right now, you know, we’ve left the immediate area but that [inaudible] and I could see there were other people in the crowd asking why are they doing this while others were egging them on.&#8221;

CHEN: “One, yes. The one security person who [was] helping us out, just another set of eyes to keep a look out for us. And, I think, actually I should back up a little bit, I think we had two photojournalists actually, um, one with the camera and another person who was operating our live view that [is the] broadcast to all of you, to broadcast the images to you. So, there was four or five of us and it just got a bit chaotic in the moment. I was trying to record cell phone while one of the photojournalists was recording video on his camera, the next thing I know I’m turning around and I see these two protesters really going after the camera and that’s when I was told that we should get out of there.”
BLITZER: “And they broke your camera which is obviously very disturbing. First of all, Natasha, are you and our CNN colleagues and friends, are you okay?”
CHEN: “I believe that we are. I’ve heard from our producer. I think we [inaudible] in the immediate moment have to leave and, of course, because of the various road blockages, we all kind of had to go in slightly different directions.”</blockquote>

CNN host Chris Cuomo was mocked late this week after he attempted to use statistics from the Obama-era to try to make the case to viewers that there was systemic economic racism currently in the economy under President Donald Trump.
Cuomo&#8217;s segment came in response to Trump economic adviser Larry Kudlow saying last week that he does not believe that there is widespread systemic racism in the United States.
Cuomo said that it was a &#8220;fact&#8221; that there was systemic racism &#8220;everywhere&#8221; in the U.S., and then proceeded to show graphics from Pew Research Center and other studies that were from 2016, according to <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/media/cnn-chris-cuomo-mocked-obama-era-data-prove-systemic-racism-impacts-trump-era-economy">Fox News</a>.

<blockquote>All right, this isn&#8217;t believing in something like the tooth fairy, all right? It&#8217;s about fact. He is wrong. It&#8217;s not a matter of opinion. It&#8217;s a matter of fact. And it is fact that you see everywhere you look in black and white.
The immediate proof is in the Cabinet. Trump has one Black cabinet member and one Black domestic policy advisor. Kudlow is the President&#8217;s Economic Adviser. So, let&#8217;s start with the economy.
White people make more money than Blacks do. Period! Even if they have the same level of education, even if they&#8217;re in the same jobs.
In fact, that fundamental divide is as wide now as it was the year Dr. King was shot. So much for Trump&#8217;s economy being the &#8220;best ever&#8221; for Black people. Not relatively. And relativity matters.
Black people are not only more likely to be unemployed, they&#8217;re also more likely to be underemployed.
For all Mr. Kudlow&#8217;s talk about the stock market, Blacks don&#8217;t invest nearly as much as Whites. Even when you include 401(k)s, systemic racism extends to government programs as well.
Going back to the New Deal, the Federal Housing program that helped build the suburbs was often off-limits to Blacks. Lending practices, redlining, you know, drawing an area around Black neighborhoods, illegal, but their effects linger.
Blacks are far less likely to own a home than Whites, a gap that&#8217;s only widened since 2004.
And those that do buy a home have to put down more money, the equity cushion it&#8217;s called. And they have to pay for a higher mortgage, meaning what? That even when banks do lend to them, they have tougher terms, even when similarly situated to Whites.
Then, there’s the question of how you get between work and home? The highway system, this may not seem like a big deal, but just think about it in terms of your existence, a marvel of American ingenuity by White America, but its design skipped over Black neighborhoods.
Even if there were as many on-ramps in their communities, many people of color are less likely to own a car because of income and credit challenges. Thus, they&#8217;re more likely [to] depend on public transportation. We invest in buses and trains at a fraction of what we spend on the highway. So again, systemically, they are disserved.
Then there’s the question of what to do with your kids. Black families work more and, as we&#8217;ve seen, earn less. What does that mean? It makes taking care of your kids harder. You don&#8217;t have the time and you don&#8217;t have the money. Childcare, tough decision.
Once they get into the school system, and this is big, because this is all about the roadway to opportunity. The impact of history still hangs over their head.
58 years between Plessy versus Ferguson, separate but equal, and Brown versus the Board of Education, mandating integration, that period wound up influencing how our school system works, more arguably than the 62 years since the Little Rock Nine.
And here&#8217;s the proof for that suggestion. Districts with mostly students of color get $23 billion less in funding than White school districts, despite serving about the same number of kids. Less money means less power, right, less pay for teachers, less access to extra-curriculars, and services and systems, right?
We generally pay for schools with things like property taxes, right? And Black communities can&#8217;t support the kind of tax base that power schools in many White communities. And even when you adjust for poverty, more is still spent on White students. Why? Systemic racism.
Even how we discipline kids in schools is affected by systemic racism. How do we know? A White kid gets in trouble, a fight at school, the results often look like this, trip to the Principal&#8217;s office.
Black kid gets in trouble at school, more likely to be disciplined. How? Suspended. Wind up in juvenile justice. Why? Systemic racism, built into the fabric of the nation, as built in as the food we eat, the air we breathe, and the water we drink. Why? Because they are all worse in places of poverty.
Remember Flint, the faces of that suffering? They still suffer today. The faces are still the same color.
Even how we connect, it doesn&#8217;t matter how much you get paid. If you&#8217;re Black, you got less access to the internet. It&#8217;s quite literally a matter of life and death as well.
Look at the Coronavirus pandemic. Who is getting sick the most? Who&#8217;s dying the most? Who are the largest percentage of essential workers working in the midst of this risk, in our healthcare system? Minorities.
And they&#8217;re less likely to have insurance. They&#8217;re less likely to have access to good care. They have more premature births. They have shorter life expectancy. They check more of the boxes of chronic conditions.
The American Academy of Pediatrics, last year, identified the root cause of health problems, over a lifetime, is racism, not race itself, the disparities caused by racism.
Finally, the Black communities&#8217; ability to change these disparities should be through our democracy. But their voting rights are compromised.
Gerrymandering, okay, voter suppression, this is what Trump should be talking about, but he doesn&#8217;t. Not &#8220;Mysterious Illegals,&#8221; but real legalities like we arguably just saw in Atlanta.
And then, yes, there is policing. I don&#8217;t say &#8220;the police&#8221; because this is about more than people or bad apples. It&#8217;s about the orchard. It&#8217;s about the system.
And again, systemic policies and tactics work against Blacks disproportionately. Cops are more likely to pull over Black drivers, even when you adjust for daytime and nighttime stops that may make it hard to tell who is driving.
People of color are more likely to be searched while stopped, even though Whites are more likely to actually have drugs on them. Our prisons, overcrowded, filled with a disproportionate number of Black faces&#8230;</blockquote>

The New York Times has published an op-ed from a far-left activist that was a <a href="https://www.opensocietyfoundations.org/grants/soros-justice-fellowships?fellow=mariame-kaba">fellow</a> at George Soros&#8217; Open Society Foundation and who is an apparent terrorist supporter, which comes just a week after the newspaper said that it should not have published an op-ed from Republican Senator Tom Cotton (AR) that espoused a political view that the majority of Americans support.
The op-ed was written by Mariame Kaba, who, according to a <a href="http://mariamekaba.com/projects/">website</a> that is in her name and a <a href="http://www.usprisonculture.com/blog/?s=Assata">blog</a> that she purportedly runs, is an apparent <a href="http://archive.is/xYPzX">supporter</a> of Assata Shakur – who is on the <a href="https://www.fbi.gov/wanted/wanted_terrorists/joanne-deborah-chesimard/@@download.pdf">FBI&#8217;s Most Wanted Terrorist</a> list.
Investigative reporter Jordan Schachtel tweeted: “Fun fact: the lady who wrote this op-ed in The New York Times is both a terrorist supporter and a radical leftist. Good thing her name isn&#8217;t Senator Tom Cotton!”

Highlights from the radical op-ed, which espouses views that the overwhelming majority of Americans <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/64-americans-oppose-defund-police-movement-key-goals/story?id=71202300">reject</a>, include:
<blockquote>We can’t reform the police. The only way to diminish police violence is to reduce contact between the public and the police.
&#8230;when you see a police officer pressing his knee into a black man’s neck until he dies, that’s the logical result of policing in America. When a police officer brutalizes a black person, he is doing what he sees as his job. &#8230;
I’ve been advocating the abolition of the police for years. Regardless of your view on police power — whether you want to get rid of the police or simply to make them less violent — here’s an immediate demand we can all make: Cut the number of police in half and cut their budget in half. Fewer police officers equals fewer opportunities for them to brutalize and kill people. &#8230;
But don’t get me wrong. We are not abandoning our communities to violence. We don’t want to just close police departments. We want to make them unnecessary. &#8230;
People like me who want to abolish prisons and police, however, have a vision of a different society, built on cooperation instead of individualism, on mutual aid instead of self-preservation. What would the country look like if it had billions of extra dollars to spend on housing, food and education for all? This change in society wouldn’t happen immediately, but the protests show that many people are ready to embrace a different vision of safety and justice.</blockquote>
The fringe op-ed comes after leftist reporters at The New York Times and at other left-wing publications claimed that an op-ed from Sen. Cotton last week put the lives of black people at risk because he advocated for the military to be called in to stop the violent riots from destroying inner cities, a view that is <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/nicholasreimann/2020/06/02/58-of-voters-support-using-military-to-help-police-control-protests-poll-finds/#1380abb62417">supported</a> by 58% of Americans.

President Donald Trump told Fox News host Harris Faulkner in an interview that aired on Thursday that if Washington State officials do not fix the situation involving an occupied region in Seattle that the federal government will intervene to solve the problem.
&#8220;If there were more toughness, you wouldn’t have the kind of devastation that you had in Minneapolis and in Seattle,&#8221; Trump said. &#8220;I mean, let’s see what’s going on in Seattle, but I will tell you, if they don’t straighten that situation out, we’re going to straighten it out.&#8221;
&#8220;What I mean is very simple,&#8221; Trump continued. &#8220;We’re not going to let Seattle be occupied by anarchists &#8230; no, we’re not going to let this happen in Seattle. He was cracking down, and he meant what he said. And he said, I don’t even care if it makes it look like brutality I’m going to crack down, when the looting starts, the shooting starts.

FAULKNER: That frightened a lot of people when you tweeted that.
TRUMP: Well, it also comes from a very tough mayor, who might have been police commissioner at the time, but I think mayor of Philadelphia named Frank Rizzo. And he had an expression like that, but I’ve heard it may times from – I think it’s been used many times.
It means two things — very different things. One is, if there’s looting, there’s probably going to be shooting, and that’s not as a threat, that’s really just a fact, because that’s what happens.
And the other is, if there’s looting, there’s going to be shooting. There’s — they’re very different meanings —

Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden struggled at times during an economic reopening event in Philadelphia on Thursday where he spoke on racial issues that have been sparked by the death of George Floyd.
At one point during the lengthy discussion, Biden said that Floyd&#8217;s death was having a bigger impact than the assassination of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.
&#8220;I came back from law school when Dr. King was assassinated,&#8221; Biden said. &#8220;And when I came back, my city is the only city in America occupied by the National Guard since Reconstruction, because a significant portion was burned to the ground.&#8221;
&#8220;But even Dr. King’s assassination did not have the worldwide impact that George Floyd’s death did,&#8221; Biden continued. &#8220;Because just like television changed the Civil Rights Movement for the better when they saw Bull Connor and his dogs ripping the clothes off of elderly black women going to church and fire hoses ripping the skin off of young kids – all those folks around the country who didn’t have any black populations heard about this, but didn’t believe it but they saw it. It was impossible to close their eyes. Well, with George Floyd, what happened to George Floyd, now you got how many people around the country? Millions of cellphones. It’s changed the way everybody’s looking at this. Look at the millions of people marching around the world, the world.&#8221;

&#8220;It&#8217;s really important that whomever you pick as a vice president agrees with you in terms of your philosophy of government and agrees with you on the systemic things that you wanna change,&#8221; Biden said. &#8220;And is, in fact, going to be able to be someone who is not at all intimidated by the president, not at all intimidated walking in the White House. During the primary debates, Biden famously pledged to pick a female running mate but would not commit to picking a minority woman. Amid the heightened racial tensions following the police-involved death of George Floyd, many analysts believe that Biden is now far more likely to choose an African-American running mate.
Biden&#8217;s &#8220;ready to be president&#8221; remarks came after leaked audio of a call obtained by <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/top-biden-surrogate-says-dems-preferring-that-former-vp-stay-in-the-basement?cmpid=prn_newsstand">Fox News</a> revealed former Virginia Democrat Governor Terry McAuliffe suggesting that it might be best if Biden stays in his basement during the campaign season.
&#8220;People say all the time, &#8216;Oh, we got to get the vice president out of the basement,'&#8221; McAuliffe said on a call. &#8220;He&#8217;s fine in the basement. Two people see him a day: his two body people. That&#8217;s it. Let Trump keep doing what Trump&#8217;s doing.&#8221;
&#8220;It&#8217;s hard for the vice president to break through,&#8221; McAuliffe said. &#8220;You&#8217;ve got the COVID crisis. He&#8217;s not a governor, doesn&#8217;t have the National Guard. He&#8217;s not the president, doesn&#8217;t have the briefing room. He needs to come out strategically. Biden: I Want A ‘Strong’ Vice President Who Is ‘Ready To Be President On Day One’

Attorney General William Barr told Fox News anchor Bret Baier in an interview that aired on Tuesday night that he has been &#8220;very troubled&#8221; by what U.S. Attorney John Durham has uncovered in his criminal investigation into the origins of the Russia investigation.
Barr was tight-lipped about what has been uncovered so far in the criminal investigation and said that the investigation has been &#8220;working very aggressively to move forward&#8221; despite the coronavirus pandemic, which shut down a lot of the court system.
&#8220;I think before the election, I think we&#8217;re concerned about the motive force behind the very aggressive investigation that was launched into the Trump campaign without, you know, with a very thin, slender reed as a basis for it,&#8221; Barr said. &#8220;It seemed that the bureau was sort of spring loaded at the end of July to drive in there and investigate a campaign.&#8221;
&#8220;But they seem to have ignored all the exculpatory evidence that was building up and continued Pell-mell to push it forward,&#8221; Barr continued. &#8220;The other area of concern is that after the election, even though they were closing down some of that, as we&#8217;ve seen in the Flynn case, and say there&#8217;s nothing here, for some reason, they went right back at it, even at a time where the evidentiary support or claim support like the dossier was falling apart. And it&#8217;s very hard to understand why they continued to push and even make public testimony that they had an investigation going when it was becoming painfully obvious or should have been obvious to anyone that there was nothing there.&#8221;
&#8220;For the first time in American history, the police organizations and the national security organizations were used to spy on a campaign and there was no basis for it,&#8221; Barr added. &#8220;The media largely drove all kinds of sensational claims were being made about the president. That could have affected the election. And then and then later on in his administration, there were actions taken that really appear to be efforts to sabotage his campaign. And that has to be looked at.&#8221;
Barr later said that based on what has been called to his attention, he has been &#8220;very troubled by&#8221; what he has seen.

FOX NEWS ANCHOR BRET BAIER: But you expect that there&#8217;ll be more arrests at the organizing part of it?
BARR: Yes, sir. You know, I can&#8217;t put a time limit on these investigations, but I think, you know, we are very much focused on getting on top of these groups.
BAIER: Turning the page here to the Durham report and wondering when that is going to come out. You&#8217;re now a few months away from an election and there&#8217;s some expectation that there&#8217;s going to be at least some bombshells in there about the investigation of the investigation into Trump collusion.
BARR: I can&#8217;t address expectations. I can say that even with the disruption of Covid and the fact that our court system is essentially been shut down for a few months, the Durham team has been working very aggressively to move forward. And as I&#8217;ve also said, this isn&#8217;t being driven by producing a report. We are trying to get to a point where we can hold accountable anyone who crossed the line and committed a criminal violation. So that&#8217;s, I think, what would be the initial stage of a resolution of Durham&#8217;s investigation. But I also think that there will be public disclosure and some form of reporters at by appropriate.
BAIER: From what you&#8217;ve seen, have crimes been committed?
BARR: Well, I can&#8217;t say.
BAIER: Well, can you paint a picture of what it looks like as far as the broad nature of it?

BAIER: You always get lumped in with being political and you&#8217;ve pushed back against that, the characterization that you&#8217;re the president&#8217;s attorney. But as you get closer to an election, doesn&#8217;t releasing this report, make it more at risk for falling into that political bucket?
BARR: I&#8217;m sure there are people who might say that I&#8217;ve publicly made clear that this has not involved looking at President Obama or Vice President Biden. I think the people that we&#8217;re looking at are not at that level. And I think what&#8211;
BAIER: Names we would be familiar with?
BARR: Some of them.
BARR: But, you know, here&#8217;s the thing. For the first time in American history, the police organizations and the national security organizations were used to spy on a campaign and there was no basis for it. The media largely drove all kinds of sensational claims were being made about the president. That could have affected the election. And then and then later on in his administration, there were actions taken that really appear to be efforts to sabotage his campaign. And that has to be looked at. And if people want to say that I&#8217;m political because I am looking at those potential abuses of power, so be it. But that&#8217;s the job of the attorney general.
BAIER: If you had to characterize the Durham report as, you know, what now? Is it going to be eye opening for Americans or is this can be kind of a blip?
BARR: I you know, I&#8217;m very troubled by it. What has been called to my attention so far, but I&#8217;m not going to characterize it beyond that.
BAIER: Can you tell us anything about the investigation to unmasking?
BARR: You know, unmasking is not by itself illegal, but the patterns of unmasking can tell us something about people&#8217;s motivations at any given point of time. So we&#8217;re trying to take a look at the whole waterfront on unmasking what was done, especially in 2016.
BAIER: And are there criminal implications?
BARR: No. As I say, it&#8217;s not it&#8217;s not against the law to unmask anyone. But I mean, for example, let&#8217;s say suppose for a period in the spring, there was a lot of heavy unmasking done on people involved with the Trump campaign. That would be very relevant as to what people were thinking at that time and what their motivations were.
BAIER: You mentioned the Flynn case. You&#8217;re in the process of trying to dismiss that charge. The charges yet that Judge Sullivan continues on and has now a shadow prosecutor making a case that it should continue.
BARR: Well, the argument is that it&#8217;s always been understood that decisions, whether pursue an individual through the prosecution process or holding them criminally accountable is fit. It&#8217;s vested in the executive branch and not the courts. And he is essentially, in our view, trying to set himself up as an alternative prosecutor. And so have you seen anything like this before? I&#8217;m not aware of anything like this before, and I think that&#8217;s why this is not being argued at the appellate stage in the District of Columbia.
BAIER: I know you can&#8217;t get in specifics, but the DOJ inspector general identified this top FBI lawyer who fabricated evidence in order to justify this, warned against Carter Page to spy on him. We know that&#8217;s a crime. Yet there haven&#8217;t been any charges yet. Is that person still working at the FBI?
BARR: No.
BAIER: And are there charges pending?
BARR: We can&#8217;t discuss future charges. But I have to say that I do find a little irritating. You know, the propensity in the American public on all sides of the political spectrum when they see something they think could be a criminal violation, I say, why hasn&#8217;t this person been indicted again? And, you know, there&#8217;s the old saying that that the wheels of justice grind slow and they do run slow because we have due process and we follow the process. But people should not draw from the fact that no action has been taken that taken yet, that that means that people or people are going to get away with wrongdoing.
BAIER: The president is counting on you and your department to crack down on social media platforms for what he calls censorship, including his own tweets. You said the law allows these companies to operate and it&#8217;s been stretched beyond its original intent. So you think these firms are somehow censoring the president and his supporters?
BARR: Well, I think there are clearly these entities are now engaged in censorship. And they originally held themselves out as open forum where people, the third parties could come and express their views. And they built up a tremendous network of eyeballs&#8211; a lot of market power based on that present presentation. And now they are acting much more like publishers because they&#8217;re censoring particular viewpoints and putting their own content in there to diminish the impact of various people&#8217;s views.
BAIER: So is there some action that you&#8217;re taking?
BARR: Well, we are looking, as many others are at changing Section 230, which is a rule that provides some protection for these companies,.
BAIER: Which would require Congress?
BARR: Which would require Congress.
BAIER: Prisoner swaps with Iran have required the Justice Department to drop charges or agree to time served for defendants in federal courts. Is this a good policy when Iran arrests people for just being American?
BARR: Well, it&#8217;s a policy that has to be handled with care, that we don&#8217;t invite seizing of more Americans. But in the individual cases where we&#8217;ve done this, we felt the benefit outweighed the risk.
BAIER: So it was worth it?
BARR: Yes.
BAIER: More to come on that?
BARR: I can&#8217;t say.
BAIER: What is it like working with President Trump in the middle of these crises? Two in a row now and you&#8217;ve been meeting with him a lot.
BARR: It&#8217;s good because I think the president&#8217;s very decisive person and he&#8217;s interested in hearing all the views. There&#8217;s a lot of robust discussion and he makes a decision and I think he&#8217;s been a good leader.
BAIER: If the president is re-elected, would you serve in a second term?
BARR: I am not going to get into that
BAIER: You&#8217;re not? But if he asked you, would you?
BARR: That would be presumptuous of me to discuss that.</blockquote>

Minneapolis City Council President Lisa Bender told CNN on Monday night that &#8220;the idea of having a police-free future is very aspirational&#8221; and that she was &#8220;willing to stand&#8221; with people who want that to be &#8220;the goal.&#8221;
CNN’s Chris Cuomo said, “When you say you see someday being police free, that sounds aspirational in terms of a utopian concept where nobody’s committing any crime because as long as these communities are being preyed upon, both from within and [outside], there’s going to have to be good men and women willing to step up to keep people safe.”
Bender responded, “I think the idea of having a police free future is very aspirational and I am willing to stand with community members who are asking us to think of that as the goal because so many folks in our community have seen us work on reform.”

Earlier in the day, Bender said during a separate interview on CNN that people who have their homes broken into by criminals are privileged.
&#8220;Do you understand that the word, dismantle, or police-free also makes some people nervous, for instance?&#8221; CNN&#8217;s Alisyn Camerota said. &#8220;What if in the middle of night, my home is broken into? Who do I call?&#8221;
&#8220;Yes, I mean, hear that loud and clear from a lot of my neighbors,&#8221; Bender <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/watch-minneapolis-city-council-president-asked-who-to-call-if-someone-breaks-into-your-house-after-dismantling-police-says-step-back-check-your-privileg">responded</a>. &#8220;And I know &#8212; and myself, too, and I know that that comes from a place of privilege. Because for those of us for whom the system is working, I think we need to step back and imagine what it would feel like to already live in that reality where calling the police may mean more harm is done.&#8221;
Later in the day, Bender again appeared on CNN where she was pressed by host Wolf Blitzer.
“What happens if there is a criminal out there with a gun and starts shooting people?” Blitzer asked. “Who will respond if there’s no police force?”
“Look, it is our top priority to keep every single member of our community safe, and if you look back at the last 150 years of our police department it is becoming increasingly clear that that model of policing isn’t working. So we need to invite in our whole community,” Bender <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/cnn-grills-minneapolis-city-council-president-how-do-you-stop-killers-without-police-she-struggles-to-respond">responded</a>. “The nine members of the city council that came from every corner of our city to stand together to make this commitment, we don’t have all the answers and what we committed to was a community process to help re-imagine public safety, so yes, we still have a police department in Minneapolis today.”

Minneapolis City Council President Lisa Bender: I Am Willing To Stand For a ‘Police-Free Future’

Attorney General William Barr said during a Fox News interview that aired on Monday evening that the reason that people have not seen members of Antifa charged yet as it pertains to the recent spate of violent riots across the country is because the investigations into Antifa are much more in-depth than a lot of the cases that have already been brought against other people who have been arrested.
&#8220;We have some investigations underway and very focused investigations on certain individuals that relate to ANTIFA,&#8221; Barr told Fox News anchor Bret Baier. &#8220;But in the in the initial phase of identifying people and arresting them, they were arrested for crimes that don&#8217;t require us to identify a particular group or don&#8217;t necessitate that.&#8221;
&#8220;Does Antifa have leaders?&#8221; Baier asked.
&#8220;It&#8217;s a very loosely organized group,&#8221; Barr responded. &#8220;And they and they have sort of a unique or unusual system of communication and organization. There are people who can be characterized as leaders in any given situation.&#8221;
&#8220;Are there people funding this effort, an organized effort that goes beyond state specific funding, the effort broadly?&#8221; Baier asked. &#8220;And are you going off after those people?&#8221;
&#8220;There appear to be sources of funding and we are looking into the sources of funding,&#8221; Barr responded. &#8220;And, you know, there is clearly some high degree of organization involved at some of these events and coordinated tactics that we&#8217;re seeing. And we&#8217;re looking into that as well. And some of it relates to an Antifa. Some of it relates to groups that act very much like an Antifa. As I said, there&#8217;s a witch&#8217;s brew of extremist groups that are trying to exploit this situation on all sides.&#8221;

<blockquote>BRET BAIER: John, thank you. Joining us now, the attorney general of United States, Bill Barr. Mr. Attorney General, thanks for being here.
BARR: Thank you, Bret.
BAIER: The effort across the country there is this movement to defund police departments, the Minneapolis City Council, with a veto proof vote, saying they&#8217;re going to essentially dismantle that police department. What do you make of that effort and what it means for the country?
BARR: Well, I think it&#8217;s the exact opposite of the way we should go. You know, I understand, given the history of racial injustice in this country, why the African-American American community, or at least some of it, would view the ghastly events in Minneapolis as manifestations of institutional racism in police departments. But I think, in fact, over the past 50 or 60 years, we&#8217;ve had a lot of reform of police departments. I was attorney general thirty years ago. And I can tell you there&#8217;s a world of difference. Today, the police chiefs, the rank and file officers, understand the need for change. And there has been great change. And I think defunding the police, holding the entire police structure responsible for the actions of certain officers is wrong.
BARR: And I think it&#8217;s dangerous to demonize police.
BAIER: But so how did these bad cops. If you want to call them that, get through in these systems? Do you blame police unions? Do you blame the systems themselves for not weeding them out? How do you address what obviously is this frustration and anger?
BARR: Well, not referring to any particular case. I think you have to remember, this is not a monolithic system. There are thousands of different police forces. There are approximately 900,000 police officers in the United States. And we were right now, there&#8217;s a crisis in policing because it&#8217;s a very tough job.
BARR: We have or we had before it a full employment economy. And if anything, we&#8217;ve had trouble attracting people and retaining people. As police officers, we want the best, most responsible people we can get. And we have to attract them into the profession. We have to retain them. We have to train them. And we have to continue to professionalize our police forces. We have, generally speaking, excellent police forces in the United States. None of us as individuals want to be lumped together with us. We want to be judged by what we do as individuals. We don&#8217;t want the misconduct of others attributed to us. And that&#8217;s in every walk of life. You know, one of the one of the legitimate grievances of the African-American community is that they&#8217;re treated with suspicion and braced simply because they&#8217;re African-Americans. And that does happen.
BARR: By the same token, demonstrators, peaceful demonstrators shouldn&#8217;t be treated as violent extremists simply because they&#8217;re out on the streets. It&#8217;s the same with police officers. Every organization has individuals who engage in misconduct. And we have to be very careful before we say the whole organization is rotten.
BAIER: What would happen if a major American city, Chicago, D.C., disbanded its police department? What would that look like? Well, the federal government have to step in.
BARR: Well, what it would look like is you would have it increases in vigilantism and you would have increasing chaos in the city. And that&#8217;s why doing things that prevent us from having a strong, effective police force are counterproductive. You end up having more killings. And that&#8217;s been shown time and time again.
BAIER: But if a major American city was doing that, you&#8217;re saying would be dangerous?
BARR: Absolutely. You know, I think we have to put things in perspective. Obviously, when police use excessive force, they have to be held accountable. And right here, both the state and federal governments zoomed in and immediately took up the matter. There&#8217;s no question it&#8217;s an issue and has to be dealt with. But in terms of sheer numbers, is it is it these police officers who are oppressing African-American communities? They&#8217;re a lot more damage, a lot more killing, a lot more fear engendered on the streets from criminal elements. In Chicago, for example, in one week, one weekend, you know, 60, 70 people shot. If you pull back the police for these communities, they&#8217;ll be there&#8217;ll be more harm done to these communities. The president, you know, has been attempting to address the criminal justice reform issue. He did the first step back. He set up the first police commission since Lyndon Johnson. We&#8217;ve been looking precisely at these issues and we&#8217;ll be coming out very shortly with our proposals on this. And he&#8217;s also advanced opportunity zones in the inner city and he&#8217;s pushing for school choice for inner city parents. So that&#8217;s to me, the civil rights issue of our era is giving these parents the wherewithal to educate their children in the best schools possible. And so he is addressing that. I think pulling the police back from these communities would make it far more difficult for these communities to have the equal opportunity and the full participation in the American dream that they deserve.
BAIER: As you know, there&#8217;s a House bill, an effort for police reform from Congress. It includes a few things. I&#8217;d like to get your thoughts on it. A national misconduct register for police.
BARR: Well, I haven&#8217;t looked at the proposal, so I&#8217;m not exactly an issue of those. But, you know, an issue by issue, I think we have to be there&#8217;s a prudent balance to be struck between making sure we can hold wrongdoers accountable, but also by not deterring effective policing. Remember, we put police. The police is not like sitting in an office, you know, checking boxes. We put these individuals into highly charged, dangerous situations where their own life is at stake. They&#8217;re adrenalin&#8217;s pumping and so forth. And we have to make sure we treat them fairly and those kinds of circumstance.
BAIER: Banning chokeholds&#8230;
BARR: I think we should ban chokeholds, lateral chokeholds, except when it&#8217;s necessary, unless police officers confronted with potentially lethal force. But I think there&#8217;s a general agreement among police agencies that we need clearer standards. We have to make sure those standards are trained to. And we have to make sure that there are systems in place that hold officers accountable. I think there&#8217;s universal agreement on that.
BAIER: So is that a federal effort? Does that suddenly come of federal training effort?
BARR: I think we&#8217;re going to need strong federal participation in this effort in helping to set standards.
BAIER: A lot of talk about Monday kind of reliving the moment there in Lafayette Park. If you had to do Monday over again, would you do something different based on what I know now?
BARR: You know, on Monday, we were reacting to three days of extremely violent demonstrations right across from the White House. A lot of injuries to police officers, arson. Things were so bad that the Secret Service recommended the president go down to the bunker. We can&#8217;t have that in our country. And so the decision was made.
BARR: We had to move the perimeter one block and that is what we were doing.
BAIER: Did the president tell you that he was planning on walking over to the church?
BARR: No, he didn&#8217;t tell me. I found out later that afternoon that he might go outside the White House. But as I&#8217;ve said, the decision to actually move out the perimeter was was initially made Sunday night by the park police in the early morning hours on Monday when I arrived. I agreed with the general conception of moving out the perimeter so we could fortify in the sense of a stronger fencing and so forth. Lafayette Park and also gives it some breathing space. And that decision was set in execution at two o&#8217;clock with all the police tactical chiefs.
BAIER: But I mean, seeing what has come from it and the image that has at least been perceived, you wouldn&#8217;t do it differently.
BARR: What? What? Well, the images has somewhat been created and miscreated in the sense that I haven&#8217;t seen any videos on TV of all the violence that was happening preceding and were hit or something or thrown,.
BAIER: Something was thrown at you.
BARR: I did go to the park before the actual operation to move out the perimeter, and I personally saw projectiles thrown and two were thrown at me and the police officers there. And my security detail made me move back because they said that projectiles had been landing in a certain area, rock things like rocks, bottles thrown at me.
BAIER: You talked extensively over the weekend about those decisions. Did you dissuade the president from using active military troops? Did the defense secretary voice those up its objections at that time?
BAIER: Did you push back on the use of the Insurrection Act?
BARR: There was no need to push back. I think everyone was on the same page. I think we what we were discussing is what would be necessary around the country and in D.C. specifically. And I think everyone agreed that if it became necessary, we could resort to federal troops as a last resort.
BAIER: You said you wouldn&#8217;t do anything differently, but the perception of clearing out the park, understanding you made the decision earlier and then the president walking over even the visual of kind of the group, all white, mostly male, it send an image that a lot of people jumped on and said that it wasn&#8217;t a good thing for the president. In retrospect, asked you, would you do anything differently? Would you do anything differently on the even the walk over to the church, you were there. So as the defense secretary. So was the chairman, the Joint Chiefs?
BARR: Well, you know, it&#8217;s not that was a decision for the White House and the president to make.
BARR: My decision that you asked me about earlier was moving the perimeter one block to provide greater security for the White House. And I would do the same. And I don&#8217;t see it as a critic of, you know, of these kinds of leadership decisions made at the White House. But as I&#8217;ve said, the president, the United States should be able to walk one block from the White House out to the Church of presidents. He should be able to do that. And I do. And, you know, this canard that this exercise was done to make that possible is totally false. I don&#8217;t see anything wrong with the president walking over to the church.
BAIER: There&#8217;s a lot of people that have been charged with crimes related to the protests that devolved into riots and looting. To my knowledge, none of the criminal complaints have mentioned Antifa. Why is that?

BAIER: You&#8217;re saying that there is an organizing cell to it, that there is some kind of leadership structure?
BAIER: When you look back at Covid 19 and what has happened, do you think we will conclude that elected officials went too far in shutting down society to the point of trampling Americans fundamental constitutional rights?
BARR: I think given the uncertainty involved and the very fast pace of the infection, especially in certain areas, the original 30 day or so, and even maybe with some extension&#8217;s measures were appropriate. But I think that as time has gone by, the degree of impingement on fundamental liberties has never been anything like this in the United States nationally, forbidding people from engaging in their livelihood, telling them to stay home. It&#8217;s just sort of a form of house arrest in many places.
BAIER: Have these protests and demonstrations and what we&#8217;ve seen across the country changed that dynamic?
BARR: Well, I think it should, because it raises a fundamental question, which is why, you know, why? Why should some people who are enjoying their First Amendment rights by going out and protesting have broader rights than other people who may want to exercise their, for example, religious First Amendment rights and go to church as long as social distancing rules and things like that are complied with.
BAIER: There&#8217;s a report that the U.S. has officially demanded Britain hand over Prince Andrew to be quizzed about his links to the billionaire pedophile, Jeffrey Epstein. Is that true?
BARR: Well, I don&#8217;t think it&#8217;s a question of handing him over. I think it&#8217;s just a question of having him provide some evidence. But beyond that, I&#8217;m not going to comment.
BAIER: So extradition? No. Just asking for evidence.
BARR: Evidence. That case is still in process. You&#8217;ve commented on the death of [Jeffrey] Epstein, you&#8217;re convinced that he committed suicide. Is there more to come from that investigation into that?
BARR: There might be more to come, but I don&#8217;t think anything that would change that conclusion.
BARR: Last thing, what is law and order mean to you? What&#8217;s your definition of law and order?
BARR: The real the real task in framing a government is to have a government that is capable of governing strong enough to govern, but not so strong that it abridging abridges the rights of the people. And so you have to have power, but you also have to have controls on that power. In the case of the governments, for example, excessive police force, law and order means that the government is bound by law and people have to be accountable for abusing their power. But it also means that we must have law and order in the body politic.
BAIER: That is just this is unprecedented to have a pandemic with lockdowns. And then this event with protests across the country. We&#8217;ve never really seen anything like it.
BARR: That&#8217;s right. I last time I was A.G., which it was not for that long a period I&#8217;d been deputy. Before that, someone showed me a list of all the crises we handled at that time. And I thought, wow, it was a very eventful period. But nothing like we&#8217;re seeing today.
BAIER: Mr. Attorney General, thank you very much for the time. Thank you. I appreciate it.</blockquote>

Attorney General William Barr Explains Why Antifa Arrests Have Not Been Made — Yet

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) had a bit of a meltdown on Monday after White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany referred to her as a &#8220;Biden adviser,&#8221; which is a <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2020-election/aoc-joins-biden-s-climate-policy-panel-n1205886">correct</a> statement, and suggested that McEnany was racist for not referring to her as a &#8220;Congresswoman&#8221; and demanded an apology. However, it was quickly pointed out by the White House that McEnany did, in fact, refer to Ocasio-Cortez as a &#8220;congresswoman.&#8221;
McEnany <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/watch-kayleigh-mcenany-trump-appalled-by-the-defund-the-police-movement">made the remark</a> in response to Fox News correspondent John Roberts asking her: &#8220;What’s the president’s thinking on this growing movement to either defund or dismantle police forces across the country, and what reforms does the president think would be appropriate in the week of the George Floyd killing?”
&#8220;The president is appalled by the defund the police movement, the fact that you have sitting Congresswomen wanting to defund the police, notably Rashida Talib, notably Biden adviser AOC, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a former Clinton and Eric Holder spokesperson, Brian Fallon, wanting to defund our police across this country, it is extraordinary,&#8221; McEnany responded. &#8220;And when you think the left has gone far and they couldn’t possibly go farther because we all remember the defund ICE movement, they want to defund immigration and customs enforcement, and now they wanted to fund the police.&#8221;
&#8220;This is extraordinary. This is rolling back the protective layers that protect Americans in their homes and in their places of business,&#8221; McEnany continued. &#8220;He’s appalled by it. And it’s remarkable to hear this coming from today’s Democrat party.&#8221;
McEnany&#8217;s claim that Ocasio-Cortez has called for defunding the police is <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/aoc-supports-defund-the-police-demands-george-floyd">correct</a> and it&#8217;s a position that is <a href="https://www.cato.org/blog/americans-agree-policing-reform">highly unpopular</a> with the American public.
&#8220;@PressSec wouldn’t be the first person to mistake a women of color for having a lower position or title than she does, but Kayleigh &#8211; in case you haven’t picked up a newspaper in two years, I’m a Congresswoman,&#8221; Ocasio-Cortez responded on Twitter. &#8220;The @PressSec comment is steeped in a long, hurtful, &amp; horrendous history of stripping women of color of titles and diminishing them to &#8216;the help.&#8217; Perhaps she isn’t aware that what she did is mired in racist history. If that is the case, I look forward to her apology tomorrow.&#8221;

Former Secretary of States Condoleezza Rice ripped Russia, Iran, and China during a CBS News interview on Sunday for trying to use the death of George Floyd to create propaganda.
During the interview with host Margaret Brennan, Rice also noted that there was &#8220;no excuse for the criminality and for the looting&#8221; that have hit America&#8217;s inner cities during the violent riots over the last couple of weeks.
&#8220;Madam Secretary, you know, some of America&#8217;s adversaries, Russia, Iran, China, they are using the images of what happened to Mr. Floyd and what is happening in the streets of American cities right now in their own state propaganda,&#8221; Brennan said. &#8220;Do you see this racial divide as a national security threat to us?&#8221;
&#8220;Well, I&#8217;ve always thought that America&#8217;s greatest strength is that we are a country where you can come from humble circumstances and do great things, and where, despite our painful history, we&#8217;ve worked harder and harder every day, brick by brick, to build a more perfect union for all of us,&#8221; Rice responded. &#8220;And I would say to those, particularly in places like China and Russia and Iran, who may want to use this for propaganda, let&#8217;s not be absurd.&#8221;
&#8220;This is not Tiananmen Square where you&#8217;ve mowed down people who disagreed with the government,&#8221; Rice continued. &#8220;This is not the invasion of Crimea where you took land from your neighbor. This is not the Green Revolution in Iran where you killed people wantonly because they wouldn&#8217;t agree with the theocratic government.&#8221;
&#8220;And I would even say to our friends abroad, in places like Europe, where I&#8217;m seeing demonstrations in support of what is happening here, thank you for your support, but please look in the mirror,&#8221; Rice continued. &#8220;Please ask yourself, in countries in Europe and countries all across the world, what are you doing about racial and ethnic inequality in your own circumstances? America has gotten better because we have been willing to confront our problems. And we&#8217;re going to confront our problems again. We&#8217;re confronting them now.&#8221;
&#8220;But I really don&#8217;t need to be lectured by Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping about peaceful protest when they have themselves used their own force just because people wanted to criticize the government,&#8221; Rice concluded. &#8220;That is not what is happening here.&#8221;

<blockquote>MARGARET BRENNAN: We turn now to former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. She joins us from Stanford, California. Great to have you back with us.
FORMER SECRETARY OF STATE CONDOLEEZZA RICE: It&#8217;s a pleasure to be with you.
MARGARET BRENNAN: You&#8217;ve written that there- there seems to be something different about this moment. What do you think is different?
RICE: Well, I think what&#8217;s different is that this, as I said recently, people are a little bit sick and tired of being sick and tired, to quote the great civil rights leader, Fannie Lou Hamer. And I think that is leading people of various backgrounds, different colors, different experiences to say how can we really make the outcome different this time? And it&#8217;s leading people to look at questions about our criminal justice system, about the justice of our institutions. But more importantly, it&#8217;s looking- having us look in the mirror at questions about race. It&#8217;s a very, very deep and abiding wound in an America that was born with a birth defect of slavery. And I&#8217;m really hoping that this time, we&#8217;ll have really honest conversations, conversations that are not judgmental. Conversations that are deep but honest conversations about what we&#8217;ve been through and who we want to be.
MARGARET BRENNAN: You wrote in an opinion piece recently that, &#8220;protests will take our country only so far and if we are to make progress, let us vow to check the language of recrimination at the door.&#8221; What do you mean by that?
RICE: We have a very painful history. Europeans and Africans came to this country together. Africans came in chains. My- you- my DNA is 40 percent European. My great-great-grandfather was my great-grandmother&#8217;s slave owner. That&#8217;s a very hard truth. But it is the truth of the past. We now have to talk about how to move forward. And when I talk to people of different colors, particularly my white friends, my white colleagues, I don&#8217;t want it to be in the language of recrimination. I want to be in the language of how do we move forward. I think we each have an individual responsibility. It&#8217;s a collective responsibility, yes, but it&#8217;s an individual responsibility to ask what am I going to do specifically? What am I going to do to help heal these wounds and to move our country forward? Because race is still very much a factor in everyday life in America.
MARGARET BRENNAN: You said for you personally answering the question of &#8220;what do I do,&#8221; you focused on education.
RICE: Yes.
MARGARET BRENNAN: Is- is- why? Why do you think that is so key?
RICE: Well, partly it&#8217;s my background, I come from a family of educators. I come from a family where my grandfather managed as- as a sharecropper&#8217;s son to get educated in Alabama in the 1920s. Education was always for us a way to break through the barriers of prejudice, to make sure that my parents used to say, make sure that you have all of the armor you need to move forward. And I know that an education is not a- a shield against prejudice, but it gives people a fighting chance. And when I look at what has happened, particularly the poor kids and minority kids in our country, they really don&#8217;t have that shot at a high-quality education. I can honestly now look at your zip code and tell whether you&#8217;re gonna get a good education. And so I think if we can focus on specific things that we can do to make sure that those kids have a chance, that their parents have choices.
MARGARET, if- if anything, if you look at this COVID-19 crisis, it has exposed even deeper inequalities in our society. Just imagine being a child who&#8217;s trying to learn- to learn at home and the parents don&#8217;t speak English, the parents don&#8217;t have an educational background of their own. And contrast that with the kid whose parents are well-educated and who can read to them. We&#8217;ve got a lot of work to do around inequality. And I&#8217;ve just always believed that education is our most important intervention against the scourge of inequality, and particularly, when we look at race and poverty, which is a particularly tough witch&#8217;s brew.
MARGARET BRENNAN: And to your point about the pandemic, I mean, it seems to be widening the existing divide. Just looking at the data, the jobless rate in this country for the black community ticked up in May to 17 percent and black women in particular are bearing the brunt of that. Where do you see the policy solutions coming from right now? Is anyone offering anything of meaning?
RICE: Well, one of the things that&#8217;s happened is that this crisis has exacerbated problems that were there already, and we now have to ask ourselves, are we just going to say, well, my goodness, look at what we&#8217;ve seen, are we really going to act? And I think there are a couple of specific things. We know that in this crisis, if you can work from home, if you are capable of being on the Internet, then you can continue to work. You&#8217;re not unemployed. Knowledge workers are doing better. So let&#8217;s talk about higher skills levels for everybody. But I also think there&#8217;s something very specific we could do. Let&#8217;s say every American is going to have broadband. Every American is going to have access to a reliable Internet. And that means people in rural areas. That means people in- in schools that are not well-endowed. I&#8217;d love to see us have a national project about access to the Internet, access to the broad- to the broadband in the way that we&#8217;ve had access, for instance, to the highway at another time in our history.
MARGARET BRENNAN: Well, that&#8217;s quite a to do list for Congress if they were to agree to take it up. If you were advising this particular president, what would you be telling him to do at this moment?
RICE: I would ask the president to first and foremost speak in the language of unity, the language of empathy. Not everyone is going to agree with any president, with this president, but you have to speak to every American, not just to those who might agree with you. And you have to speak about the deep wounds that we have and that we&#8217;re going to overcome them. I&#8217;ve heard the president talk about the resilience of Americans. I&#8217;d love to hear more of that. And I&#8217;m not advising the president. But, you know, unfortunately, Twitter and tweeting are- are not great ways for complex thoughts, for complex messages. When the president speaks, it needs to be from a place of- of thoughtfulness, from a place of having really honed the message so that it reaches all Americans. And by the way, not just the president. I would love to hear this from our leaders in Congress on both sides of the aisle. I would love to hear from mayors and from governors and from others. Leaders at this particular point need to do everything that they can to overcome, not intensify our divisions.
MARGARET BRENNAN: You are speaking like the diplomat that you have been, Secretary Rice, because I know when we spoke last year, you said that this president doesn&#8217;t recognize how raw race is as a factor in America. And just in the past few weeks, he has mourned George Floyd&#8217;s death but he&#8217;s used language like &#8220;when the looting starts, the shooting starts.&#8221; He said his supporters love &#8220;the black people.&#8221; When you hear phrases like that, how does that land with you? Do you just dismiss it because it&#8217;s President Trump?
RICE: Well, no. The president, obviously, the shooting and looting, he said that he didn&#8217;t know that historical context. And so I would say think about the historical context before you say something, because it is a deep wound. And the presidency is special in that regard. People look to the Oval Office as we&#8217;ve looked to the Oval Office throughout our history for- for messages, for signals. And as I said, the president has used some language that I&#8217;m really very, very much admire, like the resilience of the American people. Just be careful about those messages. I&#8217;m not advising the president, but if I were, I would say let&#8217;s put tweeting aside for a little bit and- and talk to us, have a conversation with us. And I think we need that. And I think he can do it.
MARGARET BRENNAN: Retired General Jim Mattis said that it wasn&#8217;t in his interpretation unintentional. In fact, he said, &#8220;Donald Trump is the first president in my lifetime who does not try to unite the American people. He does not even pretend to try. Instead, he tries to divide us.&#8221; Do you believe that it&#8217;s intentional? Do you agree with Mattis?
RICE: Well, look, I have enormous respect for Jim Mattis. And he&#8217;s a man of great integrity. He&#8217;s a patriot. He&#8217;s my friend. And he spoke to something that he needed to speak to. What I want to speak to is the future and what we do here over the next several months. We are having protests that need to be peaceful, but we&#8217;ve always moved ahead in part by protest. There&#8217;s no ex- excuse for the criminality and for the looting and for those outside influences that Governor Cuomo referred to- to- to come in from across state lines. That&#8217;s not what- who we are and what we are. But I will tell you, as somebody who grew up in Birmingham, Alabama, Jim Crow Alabama, when if a black man was shot by a policeman, it wouldn&#8217;t have even been a footnote in the newspaper, I&#8217;m really grateful to people who are going out now and saying, no, that is not acceptable. I&#8217;m grateful to those people who are thinking about how to support good police, who are thinking about how to support all of those people who put their lives on the line every day to protect us, but also to say to those who do not have our best interests at heart, who don&#8217;t undertake that obligation to protect and defend without regard to color, enough. We won&#8217;t put up with that either. And so this is a time for every American to speak to our unity, but to also be very cognizant of how we describe our differences, how we address our differences, and especially how we address one another with empathy.
MARGARET BRENNAN: You said you were grateful to those who are expressing their opposition. Is there any circumstance in which you think it would be acceptable in these days to use what the president said to governors he would use, which was the Insurrection Act, to send active duty military into American cities?
RICE: Well, I would absolutely advise against it, particularly at this time. Look, the founding fathers were very smart about this. Thomas Jefferson talked about the citizen soldier, and the embodiment of the citizen soldier these days is the National Guard and Reserve. They come from these communities. They are of these communities. They are trained in everything from dealing with natural disasters to dealing with issues like crowd control. And when the local police can&#8217;t handle it, the National Guard&#8217;s the right- the right answer. Our military isn&#8217;t trained to do this. Our military is trained for the battlefield. And this isn&#8217;t a battlefield in that sense. Now, I- I understand that- and my, personally, the violence and the ugliness and the livelihoods of business people who have now watched literally their life&#8217;s work go up in smoke, that has to be dealt with. But I fundamentally believe that the National Guard, when it&#8217;s needed, local law enforcement to the degree that it can, is the way to do this. And I would really advise against the Insurrection Act. I- I understand that President George H.W. Bush did so in the Rodney King affair back in Los Angeles. But that was at the request&#8211;
MARGARET BRENNAN: At the request of California&#8211;
RICE: &#8211;of- of California. So I would- let&#8217;s- let&#8217;s use the instruments that by our tradition, by the wisdom of our founding fathers, were given to us, citizen soldiers who can police their own.
MARGARET BRENNAN: Madam Secretary, you know, some of America&#8217;s adversaries, Russia, Iran, China, they are using the images of what happened to Mr. Floyd and what is happening in the streets of American cities right now in their own state propaganda. Do you see this racial divide as a national security threat to us?
RICE: Well, I&#8217;ve always thought that America&#8217;s greatest strength is that we are a country where you can come from humble circumstances and do great things, and where, despite our painful history, we&#8217;ve worked harder and harder every day, brick by brick, to build a more perfect union for all of us. And I would say to those, particularly in places like China and Russia and Iran, who may want to use this for propaganda, let&#8217;s not be absurd. MARGARET BRENNAN: Noted. Madam Secretary, you did not support President Trump in 2016. Seeing what you&#8217;ve seen, will you support him in 2020?
RICE: As I&#8217;ve often said, when I&#8217;m ready to speak about American politics, I&#8217;ll come back to you. And I&#8217;ll- you&#8217;ll be the first to know when I want to speak about American politics. Right now, what I want to speak to is my fellow Americans and to understand the deep divisions that we have, to understand what it is to be black. I know what it&#8217;s like to be met with a look of dismissiveness or the like. So I- I want to focus on that right now. And I want to say one other thing. You asked about the military earlier. Let&#8217;s remember, too, that our people in uniform also come from different backgrounds. They come from different races. They&#8217;re united in a common cause. But this is hard for them, too. And I know that their commanders are aware of the painful conversations that need to be- need to take place even within our military. But one great thing is when we unite for a common cause, as they often do, it helps us to overcome those differences.
