Cuomo made the comments during a recent podcast conversation with progressive podcaster Brian Tyler Cohen, using his father — former Governor Mario Cuomo (D-NY) — as a point of reference.

&#8220;What did my father have? Okay, I know I’m a white guy, okay? I know, I’m not saying anything but that,&#8221; Cuomo began, noting that his father had not been considered so. &#8220;My father was not considered a white guy. He was considered an ethnic, okay? He had that other thing going.&#8221;
&#8220;He was an other. And he hated it. And he hated the people who got to decide that, and who kept opportunities from him. So he was a real one, okay? But he loved the f***ing country,&#8221; Cuomo continued. &#8220;That’s the part that you guys, in my opinion, don’t get right. I don’t believe AOC — or any of your horses — I have a hard time believing they love the country. I think they hate more about it than they love about it. And that may be unfair. But if it is unfair, it’s because of how they’ve made their own case about themselves.&#8221;
Cohen pushed back, claiming that patriotism in the United States was largely performative and &#8220;jingoistic&#8221; in the way that kids are trained to repeat the Pledge of Allegiance. He explained that he&#8217;d taught in France, and said that the students there found the concept of such actions &#8220;foreign.&#8221;

But Cuomo wasn&#8217;t finished. He went on to expand that because Democrats had pushed away from patriotism with such force, they&#8217;d effectively allowed the Right to take complete ownership of symbolic America.
&#8220;Here’s my point: Why are people surprised when they see an American flag on my truck, or in front of my house? Why were the Democrats okay with that becoming a party symbol for the GOP?&#8221; Cuomo asked, adding, &#8220;You are absolutely right, and every political philosopher has only agreed with you that dissent and criticism of your government is one of the strongest forms of patriotism. I don’t even think that’s really an open question.&#8221;
The problem, Cuomo argued, was that the Left had not found a way to balance dissent with patriotism — and the result was that they gave the appearance that they hated the country, whether that was true or not.
&#8220;What do you balance it with?&#8221; he asked. &#8220;When’s the last time you heard Democrats say something good about this country? That’s true, too. And I think it goes to your point about, hey man, you gotta play the game where it stands. I think that a real one who hates certain things that were done to them — systemic, cultural — and is fighting to change it because they believe so much in what this country can be, is, and is at her best. That’s the sweet spot. I can’t think of the last time I heard AOC say something good about the country.&#8221;

Even The New York Times isn&#8217;t buying The Washington Post&#8217;s hit piece attacking War Secretary Pete Hegseth and claiming that he gave an order to &#8220;kill them all,&#8221; authorizing a second missile strike on a Venezuelan drug boat when survivors were in the water.
The Post&#8217;s &#8220;exclusive&#8221; — which ran on Saturday — painted a picture of two survivors, helplessly clinging to the remnants of their destroyed vessel as a second strike was ordered to ensure they were killed. Citing anonymous sources, the outlet walked right up to the line, but stopped just short of directly accusing Hegseth of executing the two survivors in the water.
What followed immediately was absolutely predictable: anchors and guests across the legacy media Sunday shows <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/spin-cycle-wapo-hit-piece-targets-pete-hegseth-and-legacy-outlets-fall-in-line">stepped across the line</a> even WaPo wouldn&#8217;t, accusing Hegseth of committing <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/whoopi-goldberg-says-pete-hegseth-set-soldiers-up-to-face-war-crimes-charges">war crimes</a> and claiming those who carried out his orders might also be held to account for doing so.
But <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/12/01/us/hegseth-drug-boat-strike-order-venezuela.html">The New York Times</a> was not quite ready to go all in on the accusation, and instead cited five officials who said that while Hegseth&#8217;s initial order was to deliver a lethal strike — which would destroy the vessel and the drugs and kill those onboard — there was no specific order given regarding how to proceed if the first strike did not fully accomplish that.

In addition, the officials told the NYT that there was no second command from Hegseth ordering another strike when drone footage showed survivors in the water. Instead, they said that the Special Operations commander overseeing the attack, Admiral Frank M. Bradley, had ordered several follow-up strikes to sink the boat that was disabled by the first hit — and that the survivors were killed as those strikes were carried out.
The Federalist&#8217;s <a href="https://x.com/MZHemingway/status/1995747364196548720">Mollie Hemingway</a> noted that while it certainly tracked that WaPo had run with the story in the first place, it seemed slightly off routine for the NYT to hold back.
&#8220;It is not surprising that the WashPost, which originated the Russia collusion hoax, the Kavanaugh hoax, and the first Trump impeachment hoax, would run another false info op. It IS a bit surprising that the NYT isn’t going along with it in their normal manner,&#8221; she said.
The White House&#8217;s account of what happened squares with the NYT report, however, as Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said during Monday&#8217;s briefing that there had been multiple strikes on the drug boat in question, but that the orders had come from Admiral Frank M. Bradley, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/karoline-leavitt-says-hegseth-didnt-order-second-strike-on-narco-terrorists-boat">not Hegseth</a>.
Hegseth followed that revelation with an <a href="https://x.com/PeteHegseth/status/1995643490152128919">X post</a> declaring his support for Bradley, saying, &#8220;Let’s make one thing crystal clear: Admiral Mitch Bradley is an American hero, a true professional, and has my 100% support. I stand by him and the combat decisions he has made — on the September 2 mission and all others since. America is fortunate to have such men protecting us. When this @DeptofWar says we have the back of our warriors — we mean it.&#8221;

Hostin went on to say that there could be legal consequences for those who gave the orders and for those who carried them out.
&#8220;That means the person who gave the order can be held accountable and put in prison, and that means the person that conducted — the people who conducted the orders, that pulled the trigger are also responsible and can be held accountable,&#8221; she said. &#8220;So, now you have people that are serving their countries, that are serving this country as patriots, perhaps following an illegal order and then themselves can be court-martialed. Imagine that.&#8221;

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt upended a legacy media narrative on Monday when she revealed that War Secretary Pete Hegseth had not given the order to execute a second strike on a drug boat, and who, in fact, had given it.
Leavitt dumped cold water on a story — published Saturday by The Washington Post — that quickly became the talk of the Sunday political shows. The story detailed what had happened in the aftermath of the first kinetic strike on narco-terrorists, and alleged that a second strike order was given, on Hegseth&#8217;s authority, to &#8220;kill them all&#8221; when the first hit left two survivors clinging to the wreckage of the boat.

Leavitt was pressed on the story during Monday&#8217;s briefing, when CBS News reporter Gabe Gutierrez asked her to clarify whether the administration was denying that a second strike had taken place or simply denying that Hegseth had given the order for a second strike to be carried out.
&#8220;The latter is true,&#8221; Leavitt declared. &#8220;And I have a statement to read for you here. &#8216;President Trump and Secretary Hegseth have made it clear that presidentially-designated narco-terrorist groups are subject to lethal targeting in accordance with the laws of war.&#8221;
&#8220;With respect to the strikes in question on September 2nd, Secretary Hegseth authorized Admiral Bradley to conduct these kinetic strikes. Admiral Bradley worked well within his authority and the law, directing the engagement to ensure the boat was destroyed and the threat to the United States of America was eliminated,&#8221; Leavitt continued.

&#8220;I want to put the question to you,&#8221; anchor Kristen Welker began. &#8220;If you were still in uniform, if you received an order to strike suspected drug boats overseas and kill everybody onboard, would you refuse that order in real time?&#8221;
&#8220;Well, let me start by saying I&#8217;ve sunk two boats — two ships,&#8221; Kelly replied, referencing his own actions during the first Gulf War. &#8220;Never once did I question whether those orders were legal or illegal. People can tell the difference — should be able to tell the difference between something that is unlawful and something that is lawful.&#8221;
&#8220;If I was ever given an unlawful order, I would refuse — you know, even if you have time, you can certainly go to the Judge Advocate Generals, the lawyers, and have a discussion about it,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;If you don&#8217;t have time, you just say simply I&#8217;m not going to do that, that&#8217;s against the law.&#8221;
&#8220;It puts a lot of burden on the troops to make a decision in real time,&#8221; Welker observed.
&#8220;It&#8217;s a tremendous amount of burden on officers in the military,&#8221; Kelly agreed. &#8220;But that is their responsibility, and they can figure out — you know, a reasonable person can tell something that is legal and something that is illegal.&#8221;
Welker asked again, directly, whether Kelly would refuse the orders to strike drug boats.
Kelly did not offer a definitive answer, but instead said that he worried about troops who &#8220;may find out down the road that they did something that is illegal&#8221; because they acted on an order that reflected &#8220;the whims of a president&#8221; rather than law.

The focus across media outlets was on what happened after the initial missile strike: operators watched a live feed that showed two survivors clinging to the wreckage of the boat. Then, according to The Washington Post&#8217;s report, a second strike was carried out in order to comply with the directive to &#8220;kill them all&#8221; — and the legality of that second strike in particular was where they focused the majority of the attention.
On ABC&#8217;s &#8220;This Week,&#8221; host <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/abc-personalities-run-with-wapo-hit-piece-on-hegseth-ignore-war-secs-response">Jonathan Karl</a> brought in global affairs correspondent Martha Raddatz to discuss the issue, and she questioned whether the second strike, reportedly carried out when the two survivors were not known to be an &#8220;imminent threat&#8221; might stand in violation of the &#8220;rules of war.&#8221;
&#8220;Did those two men clinging to the side of the boat pose an imminent threat?” she asked, and she wondered aloud whether the order to strike a second time had been given with the knowledge that survivors were hanging on for dear life, and whether the lawyers had been consulted about the legality of such a strike.

Karl then set up Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) with the framing of the second strike as a &#8220;war crime.&#8221; Van Hollen agreed that it would certainly be a &#8220;war crime,&#8221; but only if one accepted the Trump administration&#8217;s assertion that the United States was, in fact, at war with the cartels.
&#8220;But it could be worse than that. If that theory is wrong, then it&#8217;s plain murder,&#8221; he said. &#8220;But even if you accept their legal theory, then it is a war crime.&#8221;

On CBS&#8217;s &#8220;Face the Nation,&#8221; Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA) argued that he was unsure of the legality of any of the strikes against narco-terrorists. &#8220;It’s time for Congress to rein in a president who is deciding to wage war on his own say so, which is not what the Constitution allows,&#8221; he said.

On CNN&#8217;s &#8220;State of the Union,&#8221; Senator Mark Kelly (D-AZ) claimed that he would have disregarded the order to carry out the second strike.
&#8220;I&#8217;m a guy who — I have sunk two ships &#8230; during the first Gulf War,&#8221; Kelly said. &#8220;I never in that situation questioned whether those strikes were legal. We were given an order to do this, it was a time of war.&#8221;
Kelly went on to say that he, like Kaine, questioned the legality of the strikes from the start.

ABC News anchor Jonathan Karl spent part of Sunday morning&#8217;s broadcast of &#8220;This Week&#8221; talking about a Washington Post hit piece attacking War Secretary Pete Hegseth.
The story in question alleged that Hegseth had ordered a second strike on a boat full of narco-terrorists when the first had left two survivors.
Hegseth responded to the story in a <a href="https://x.com/SecWar/status/1994552598142038358">lengthy post</a> on X, saying in part, &#8220;As usual, the fake news is delivering more fabricated, inflammatory, and derogatory reporting to discredit our incredible warriors fighting to protect the homeland. As we’ve said from the beginning, and in every statement, these highly effective strikes are specifically intended to be &#8216;lethal, kinetic strikes.&#8217; The declared intent is to stop lethal drugs, destroy narco-boats, and kill the narco-terrorists who are poisoning the American people. Every trafficker we kill is affiliated with a Designated Terrorist Organization.&#8221;
But when Karl raised the issue on Sunday morning, he opted to speak instead with ABC&#8217;s global affairs correspondent Martha Raddatz, who has reported extensively on the military but has never served herself.

Raddatz cited The Washington Post report and said that the second strike — executed when the two survivors were apparently clinging to the wreckage of the destroyed boat — had been ordered based on verbal instruction from Hegseth himself to &#8220;kill everybody.&#8221;
&#8220;Did those two men clinging to the side of the boat pose an imminent threat?&#8221; she asked, going on to wonder whether the order to strike a second time had been given with the knowledge that survivors were hanging on for dear life, and whether the lawyers had been consulted about the legality of such a strike.
The conversation focused on the idea that attacking when there was no &#8220;imminent threat&#8221; would be a violation of the &#8220;rules of war.&#8221;
But as Marine Corps veteran and Fox News personality Joey Jones said on &#8220;The Big Weekend Show,&#8221; an &#8220;imminent threat&#8221; does not always have to come in the form of guns pointed at American citizens.

At least two media outlets responded to an Afghan national&#8217;s attack on two National Guardsmen by fretting over how President Donald Trump&#8217;s reaction might hurt refugees.
The suspect in the shooting, 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, is an Afghan national admitted to the United States in 2021, in the aftermath of former President Joe Biden&#8217;s disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan. On Wednesday, he opened fire on two National Guardsmen just blocks from the White House, killing one, Sarah Beckstrom and leaving the other, Andrew Wolfe, fighting for his life with critical injuries.
Trump, a vocal critic of the Biden administration&#8217;s Afghanistan failures, <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/115625421503636680">quickly promised</a> to &#8220;fix&#8221; the problems created when Biden allowed &#8220;hundreds of thousands of people&#8221; to come into the United States from Afghanistan, &#8220;totally unvetted and unchecked.&#8221;
The president also vowed to &#8220;permanently pause migration from all Third World Countries&#8221; and said that he planned to &#8220;deport any Foreign National who is a public charge, security risk, or non-compatible with Western Civilization.&#8221;
Rather than cover the story straight or report on the risk that Biden&#8217;s refugee policies pose to American citizens, the Associated Press telegraphed concern for Afghan refugees in the United States.

Another headline <a href="https://apnews.com/article/national-guard-shooting-refugee-reactions-368d69586a28dabf47bf8e7025946068">reported</a> that &#8220;Refugee groups worry about backlash after shooting of National Guard soldiers in DC.&#8221;
<blockquote>Many Afghans living in the U.S. are afraid to leave their houses, fearing they’ll be swept up by immigration officials or attacked with hate speech, said Shawn VanDiver, president of the San Diego-based group #AfghanEvac, a group that helps resettle Afghans who assisted the U.S. during the two-decade war.
“They’re terrified. It’s insane,” VanDiver told The Associated Press Thursday. “People are acting xenophobic because of one deranged man. He doesn’t represent all Afghans. He represents himself.”</blockquote>
Yet another piece <a href="https://apnews.com/article/national-guard-shooting-afghan-operation-allies-welcome-b11c48fb0b807e8f519c266e2a004d8e">suggested</a> that Trump was in the wrong for criticizing the Biden administration for bringing unvetted Afghans into the United States in the first place. &#8220;Trump criticizes the program that brought Afghan refugees to the US who fought the Taliban,&#8221; it read.
<blockquote>The program, called <a class="Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement" href="https://apnews.com/article/immigration-new-jersey-united-states-kabul-taliban-273f9ebedfdd94739d6dbe77d7cbc3db" data-gtm-enhancement-style="LinkEnhancementA">Operation Allies Welcome</a>, was created after the 2021 decision to leave Afghanistan following 20 years of American intervention and billions of dollars of aid.
Democratic President Joe Biden, who oversaw the withdrawal started by his predecessor — Republican President Donald Trump — said the U.S. owed it to the interpreters and translators, the fighters and drivers and others who opposed the Taliban to give them a safe place outside of Afghanistan.</blockquote>
The New York Times was slightly more overt in its adoption of the &#8220;Trump pounces&#8221; theme, with one headline <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/11/27/us/politics/trump-national-guard-shooting.html">asserting</a> &#8220;Trump Uses National Guard Shooting to Cast Suspicion on Refugees.&#8221;
<blockquote>President Trump claimed there were &#8220;a lot of problems with Afghans,&#8221; without providing evidence, as his administration announced that it was implementing new immigration guidelines.</blockquote>
But as those outlets and others have chosen to ignore, Army Ranger veteran and Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell warned the Biden administration in real time, telling anyone who would listen that bringing unvetted Afghans into the United States was a recipe for disaster.

At the time, he <a href="https://x.com/Surabees/status/1994030582116876620">told the story</a> of an Afghan interpreter who had been working with his platoon for more than a year before betraying them, putting them on a path where a land mine injured several and killed one of Parnell&#8217;s men.
&#8220;After that mission was over, during our After Action Report (AAR), we found out that our interpreter — who had been with us every step of the way, someone who we thought was our friend — we learned that he was working with an Iranian IED cell in Pakistan, and coordinated the placement of that mine,&#8221; Parnell explained.
But Parnell&#8217;s warning fell on deaf ears. Just one day before the deadly shooting cast a pall over a nation preparing to celebrate Thanksgiving, another Afghan national <a href="https://x.com/Brooketaylortv/status/1994807675767398902">was arrested</a> for making a terroristic threat&#8221; and posting it on TikTok.
Fox News national correspondent Brooke Taylor reported that Mohammad Dawood Alokozay made it clear in the video that he was building a bomb and had intended to target the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Like the shooting suspect in custody in D.C., Alokozay was brought into the United States in the aftermath of the Afghanistan withdrawal under Biden&#8217;s Operation Allies Welcome. He was granted legal permanent resident status in September 2022.

Meanwhile, SPC Sarah Beckstrom of West Virginia has succumbed to her injuries — and Andrew Wolfe, the other National Guardsman who was shot, continues to fight for his life. Following the news that Beckstrom had died, U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro announced that the charges against Lakanwal had been <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/charges-upgraded-against-afghan-shooting-suspect-after-national-guard-soldier-dies">upgraded</a> to include first-degree murder.
&#8220;There are certainly many more charges to come, but we are upgrading the initial charges of assault to murder in the first degree,&#8221; Pirro said. &#8220;It is a premeditated murder. There was an ambush with a gun toward people who didn’t know what was coming.&#8221;
President Donald Trump, upon learning that Lakanwal was an Afghan national who entered the United States  in 2021 following former President Joe Biden&#8217;s disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan, took immediate action and <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/in-blistering-thanksgiving-post-trump-promises-to-stop-migration-from-all-third-world-countries">declared a halt</a> to &#8220;migration from all Third World Countries to allow the U.S. system to fully recover.&#8221;
Trump also called for a review of the vetting process for those who entered the United States during and after the withdrawal from Afghanistan, and promised that his administration would &#8220;deport any Foreign National who is a public charge, security risk, or non-compatible with Western Civilization.&#8221;
