While jurors consider the case of Massachusetts mother Lindsay Clancy, a New York City judge has found another mother — who also killed her children — not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect.
Dimone Fleming, now 26, had repeatedly stabbed her sons — Octavius Canada, 11 months, and Daishawn Fleming, 3 — before submerging them in a bathtub, The New York Times <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2026/08/28/nyregion/bronx-mother-postpartum-psychosis.html?searchResultPosition=1">reported</a>. Police found her on November 26, 2022, at a family shelter. She was naked from the waist up and was pretending to read a children&#8217;s book that was upside down at the time.
Fleming&#8217;s case, like the high-profile Clancy case, has drawn attention to maternal health issues — particularly postpartum depression and psychosis — but hasn&#8217;t made the same kind of headlines.
According to court documents, Fleming had been seen at the Floating Hospital in Queens for some time prior to the murders — and after being diagnosed with a major depressive disorder, she&#8217;d been prescribed medication to manage the symptoms. Instead of taking the medication, however, Fleming had used marijuana on a daily basis — and her condition worsened considerably.
Dr. Eric Goldsmith, who examined Fleming on behalf of the prosecution, determined that she was &#8220;grossly psychotic and out of touch with reality&#8221; the night that she killed her children. He also said in his report that Fleming had been hallucinating, believing that she was inhabited by another spirit and that the world was ending.
Defense psychiatrists wrote that Fleming believed her actions were necessary to &#8220;cleanse&#8221; her children.
Lindsay Clancy claims to have heard a male voice telling her that she had to kill her children and then herself. She had spent months in and out of different doctors&#8217; offices, and had been prescribed a cocktail of different psychiatric drugs — but several reports indicated that she had not been taking them reliably.
In Clancy&#8217;s case, the defense has also cited postpartum depression and psychosis — and a lengthy list of medications — when arguing that she should not be held criminally responsible for strangling her three young children. The prosecution has argued that Clancy&#8217;s actions show deliberate and willful planning and a clear awareness that she understood the difference between right and wrong.
The jury in Clancy&#8217;s case deliberated for several hours on Thursday and nearly a full day on Friday. They are expected to return to deliberations on Monday.

President Donald Trump took a run at NBC&#8217;s Kristen Welker on Sunday, accusing the Meet the Press moderator of misrepresenting his endorsement record ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
Trump, who boasts a 100% success rate with endorsed candidates in 2026 Senate primaries and a 98% success rate in House races, took issue with a comment Welker made not on the Sunday broadcast of Meet the Press itself, but during a pre-show appearance on WRC-TV, NBC&#8217;s local Washington station, to promote the program — where she said he&#8217;d had &#8220;mixed results&#8221; with his endorsements.

Trump turned then to address media more broadly, saying that there were many others who went out of their way to broadcast only the bad things — even if that meant reframing good things to make them appear bad.

The largest Muslim charity organization in the United States published — and then quickly removed — an education &#8220;guide&#8221; blaming the 9/11 terrorist attacks on American support for Israel.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations initially released the materials as part of the &#8220;Back to school resource guide&#8221; that went live on Monday — and it laid out a number of dubious claims about the 2001 attacks in which nearly 3,000 Americans were killed between the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and four hijacked commercial flights.
One such claim, shared by <a href="https://nypost.com/2026/08/28/us-news/cair-blamed-9-11-on-us-support-for-israel-recommended-bin-ladens-writings-in-back-to-school-guide/?utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_campaign=nypost">The New York Post</a>, was that the attacks themselves had not been planned and carried out by Islamic terrorists, but rather by a &#8220;group self-identifying as Al Qaeda hailing from the mountains of Afghanistan.&#8221;
The resource material, titled &#8220;Muslim Studies Curriculum,&#8221; also asserted that American involvement in the region was reasonable justification for attacks on the United States. Continued support for Israel and the United States military&#8217;s role in the Gulf War were also cited.
The group&#8217;s assessment of the situation after the 9/11 attacks went even further, suggesting that the United States had created an &#8220;Islamophobic&#8221; culture with the ensuing Global War on Terror. Specifically, the group asserted that the words &#8220;terrorism&#8221; and &#8220;terrorist&#8221; were reserved solely for Muslims.
&#8220;While Islamophobia and anti-Muslim racism existed long before the 9/11 attacks, this time period marked a stark shift in US policy and state sponsored Islamophobia in the U.S. and abroad. There was immediate backlash against anyone perceived to be Muslim,&#8221; the materials read, and presented arguments suggesting that political violence from non-Muslims was often met with less backlash.
Terrorist leader Osama bin Laden&#8217;s &#8220;Letter to America&#8221; was included in the guide as a &#8220;resource material&#8221;: &#8220;Your law is the law of the rich and wealthy people, who hold sway in their political parties, and fund their election campaigns with their gifts. Behind them stand the Jews, who control your policies, media and economy.&#8221;
Nicholas Haros Jr., whose mother Frances was killed on 9/11, said he believed the misinformation campaign was intentional: &#8220;The further we get from 9/11, this new generation of kids will learn to blame our country. These kids are going to be poisoned – and that’s the intent.&#8221;
Senator <a href="https://www.cotton.senate.gov/news/press-releases/cotton-to-mcmahon-pro-hamas-organization-has-no-place-in-american-schools">Tom Cotton</a> (R-AR) sounded the alarm on CAIR almost a year earlier in a letter to Education Secretary Linda McMahon dated September 9, 2025.
&#8220;I write to alert you to the Council on American-Islamic Relations’s (CAIR) efforts to influence K-12 schools &#8230; It is well documented that CAIR has deep ties to pro-Hamas terrorist organizations and publicly supports Hamas’s terrorist activities,&#8221; Cotton wrote in part.
&#8220;Such an organization should never have access to our nation’s children,&#8221; he asserted, adding, &#8220;The organization offers &#8216;educational&#8217; materials on its website that perpetuate pro-terrorist, anti-Israel rhetoric. CAIR Philadelphia recently issued guidance for educators titled &#8216;Remembering and Reflecting: Teaching September 11, 2001, in Diverse Classrooms.&#8217; The guide directs teachers to avoid using &#8216;inaccurate and inflammatory terms such as ‘Islamic terrorists,’ ‘jihadists,’ or ‘radical Islamic terrorists,’&#8217; when describing the September 11 terrorists.&#8221;
&#8220;The U.S. Department of Education must ensure that CAIR is not given an opportunity to push its radical, pro-terrorist, anti-Israel ideology on American schoolchildren,&#8221; he concluded.

Comedian and HBO host Bill Maher mocked liberals who were losing their minds over President Donald Trump&#8217;s decision to rename Lake Ontario.
Trump announced the change to &#8220;Lake America&#8221; as his administration squabbles with Canadian leadership over trade and tariffs — and liberals, as Maher pointed out, were quick to claim that the president was not allowed to simply rename things whenever the political whim struck.
&#8220;Trump is so mad at Canada, he renamed Lake Ontario &#8216;Lake America,'&#8221; Maher said, prompting laughs. &#8220;Now I gotta buy a new globe again. It&#8217;s like the fifth time it&#8217;s happened&#8221; — a nod to Trump&#8217;s earlier renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the &#8220;Gulf of America.&#8221;
&#8220;The liberals are very pissed at this,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;They say you can&#8217;t just go around changing things to fit your political agenda. Just ask any Latinx birthing person.&#8221;
Newsbusters Executive Editor Tim Graham laid out a similar argument, telling <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/media/bill-maher-ridicules-liberals-lake-america-outrage-jab-left-wing-language-police">Fox News Digita</a>l, &#8220;Liberals want to rename all kinds of things to satisfy their urge for wokeness. Just in this decade, they&#8217;ve pulled down all kinds of statues and renamed scads of military bases. What they hate is anything Trump does to add a patriotic pro-America tinge to something which they associate more with his ego than with patriotism. They see red  — as in a red MAGA cap.&#8221;
&#8220;The media routinely genuflect ethnic and LGBTQ pressure groups and their demands to remake the language we&#8217;re all supposed to use. So, they can&#8217;t seriously object to renaming things. They just want to be the only people who get to rename things,&#8221; he said.
Trump&#8217;s beef with Canada stems from trade talks that <a href="https://theconversation.com/us-canada-trade-war-deepens-as-trump-revives-depression-era-trade-tool-whats-at-stake-for-consumers-and-the-midterms-290569">stalled again</a> on Friday, despite reports that a deal was close. The resulting reciprocal tariffs — up to 50% on some goods — also prompted harsh words both from Trump and from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
Carney, for example, accused Trump of attempting to destroy Canada&#8217;s automobile industry. Trump responded by labeling Canada &#8220;one of the worst countries in the world to deal with&#8221; and suggesting that Canada wanted the benefits of being a U.S. state without any of the responsibilities.
The Trump administration is relying on a never-before-used provision built into 1930&#8217;s <a href="https://www.senate.gov/artandhistory/history/minute/Senate_Passes_Smoot_Hawley_Tariff.htm">Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act</a> — Section 338 — which allows the president the authority to implement unilateral tariffs of up to 50% based on his determination that the nation against which he&#8217;s levying the tariffs is using policy to &#8220;discriminate&#8221; against the United States.

Dr. Avram Mack, a rebuttal witness for the prosecution in Lindsay Clancy&#8217;s murder trial, is reportedly &#8220;no longer employed&#8221; at Nemours Children&#8217;s Health in Delaware.
CT Insider <a href="https://www.ctinsider.com/news/article/lindsay-clancy-expert-avram-mack-nemours-22407460.php?utm_campaign=CMS%20Sharing%20Tools%20(Premium)&amp;utm_source=t.co&amp;utm_medium=referral">reported</a> that as of Friday, the psychiatrist — who got into several heated exchanges with defense attorney Kevin Reddington during his testimony — was no longer associated with Nemours Children&#8217;s Health. Nemours later clarified that Mack resigned from the position on Monday — the same day his cross-examination concluded.
Mack, who trained at Columbia and has largely practiced child and adolescent psychiatry, was pressed by Reddington during cross-examination on his limited experience evaluating adult patients.
&#8220;Dr. Avram Mack is no longer employed by Nemours Children&#8217;s Health,&#8221; a spokesperson told the outlet, but did not go into detail, adding, &#8220;employment decisions are confidential.&#8221;
The Daily Wire independently confirmed that a directory search for Mack&#8217;s name on the Nemours website came up empty.
Mack&#8217;s resume, which he submitted when he testified in the Clancy trial, stated that he had been employed at Nemours Children&#8217;s Health in the Delaware Valley since 2023.
Mack, during the trial, argued for the prosecution that Clancy should be held criminally responsible for the strangulation of her three young children despite conceding that she was, at the time, &#8220;in a serious psychiatric state and she was suffering.&#8221;
Mack testified that he did not consider <a href="https://postpartum.net/perinatal-mental-health/">postpartum</a>-specific conditions in his evaluation of Clancy, citing guidelines that limit the postpartum period to four weeks after birth — a definition Reddington and other experts in the case have disputed, with some testimony putting the window at a year or more.
He also stated that he had not observed any evidence of &#8220;manic&#8221; episodes, leading him to believe that Clancy was not suffering from bipolar disorder — and said that some of the fears she&#8217;d expressed were well within the range of what would be considered normal. Fears that something might happen to one of her children, for example, or that someone might take her children away, were fears that many mothers have especially early in their children&#8217;s lives.
Mack and Reddington argued over the typical timeframe for postpartum depression and psychosis — as well as the definition of &#8220;postpartum&#8221; — during the trial. At one point, after Mack appeared to smile, Reddington scolded him: &#8220;What are you smiling for? This is not funny, sir.&#8221;
Psychiatrist Dr. Phillip Resnick, a witness for the defense, testified to almost the complete opposite scenario. Saying that he believed Clancy to be &#8220;frankly psychotic,&#8221; Resnick said he believed that Clancy had experienced &#8220;command hallucinations&#8221; in which she heard a male voice instructing her to harm her children.
Other testimony questioned the fact that she&#8217;d only heard the voice for a brief period of time — an atypical presentation — and that it had stopped as soon as she&#8217;d finished strangling the children.
Dr. Gregory Saathoff, who interviewed Clancy in May and June of 2026, also commented on the fact that Clancy had piled on extra errands to ensure that her husband, Patrick Clancy, would be away from the house longer.
The prosecution <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2026/08/28/us/lindsay-clancy-jury-deliberations">closed its case</a> by arguing that Clancy had &#8220;acted intentionally, rationally and swiftly&#8221; when she took her children&#8217;s lives.
&#8220;I’m not saying she was happy about it. I’m saying, it was what she had to do to end her misery,” prosecutor Jennifer Sprague said. &#8220;But it was a choice. It was a choice.&#8221;
Reddington attempted to hang Clancy&#8217;s condition on the psychiatric medication she&#8217;d been prescribed — some of which she reportedly either did not take at all or did not take reliably — saying that she&#8217;d been failed by the system &#8220;because of the damn medicine and the lousy medical care that she got.&#8221;
The jury deliberated for about three-and-a-half hours on Thursday and roughly seven hours on Friday. They are expected to resume deliberations on Monday. If they find Clancy criminally responsible for the murders, she will likely face life in prison without the possibility of parole. If the jury finds her not guilty by reason of lack of criminal responsibility, prosecutors can petition the court to have her remanded to a psychiatric facility.

Chicago Sky owner Michael Alter doubled down on his decision to bar Enes Kanter Freedom from future WNBA games at Wintrust Arena, claiming the former NBA player was no more entitled to a warning than someone who would &#8220;shoot a gun at someone.&#8221;
Alter told OutKick that Freedom had been identified as a threat when he stood up and approached the court, hands raised — at Sunday&#8217;s game featuring the Indiana Fever and the Chicago Sky — in response to comments shouted at him by Sky guard Natasha Cloud. CNN had to apologize to the family of the late country music icon Dolly Parton after accidentally using a photo of a Las Vegas tribute artist in a report on her death.
&#8220;We regret the error and apologize to the Parton family,&#8221; the network told <a href="https://nypost.com/2026/08/27/media/cnn-apologizes-to-dolly-partons-family-for-using-photo-of-las-vegas-impersonator-in-coverage-of-icons-death/?utm_campaign=nypost&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter">the New York Post</a> on Thursday.
The photo featured Parton impersonator Kelly Vohnn, and aired during &#8220;Laura Coates Live,&#8221; hours after the country legend&#8217;s death had been confirmed by her family.

Vohnn learned of the mistake shortly after the photo aired, telling The Post that her phone began blowing up with people telling her that they&#8217;d just seen her on CNN: &#8220;I started getting all these texts in from friends saying that I was on CNN, and I couldn’t believe it &#8230; I was already heartbroken at losing Dolly because of how much she has given to me as a woman and an artist.&#8221;
&#8220;But then to see these images of me on screen was just weird. Somebody at CNN really messed up and didn’t do their research,&#8221; Vohnn added. &#8220;I felt so sorry and apologetic for Dolly, because over her career there are so many wonderful images and moments that they could have chosen from — and CNN just picked something not appropriate. To be clear, I have never represented myself as being Dolly ever in my life. I have always been known as a tribute act for her and many other stars. It was quite embarrassing, to be honest.&#8221;
Vohnn told The Post that she had considered reaching out to CNN herself to address the mistake, but that she&#8217;d been so upset by the news of the icon&#8217;s passing that she hadn&#8217;t done so: &#8220;I thought about calling CNN, but was really consumed by the grief of losing Dolly [and] I just wanted to be at home with my thoughts, raising a glass of wine to that brilliant woman.&#8221;
Parton passed away after a brief battle with cancer, leaving behind a legacy of music and philanthropy that touched millions around the world. She was 80 years old.

Actor Mandy Patinkin, whose role in the cult classic film &#8220;The Princess Bride&#8221; made him a household name, is taking on a new role ahead of the 2028 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles, California: honorary Team Captain for USA Fencing.
“When Mandy and I first spoke, what struck me wasn’t the movie, though we got there eventually,” Phil Andrews, CEO of USA Fencing, explained. “It was how deeply he understood what this sport gives people: discipline, confidence, a community and a lifetime of joy. We could not ask for a better honorary Team Captain to lead our fencers, and our sport, into a home Games in Los Angeles.&#8221;
After being named as the organization&#8217;s <a href="https://variety.com/2026/sports/news/mandy-patinkin-usa-fencing-princess-bride-team-captain-1236841653/">first-ever honorary team captain</a>, Patinkin said, &#8220;Fencing is a true craft, a genuine art form, a thrilling discipline. It requires every cell of your mind and body, but particularly your mind. It’s a form of meditation. It’s not just your physical abilities that count, and they certainly do, but I think the real fun is to get inside the other person’s mind and being, and know when and where they’re going to move before your opponent even knows it.&#8221;
And while acting might be Patinkin&#8217;s primary job, his fencing skills are legitimate.
Patinkin and his costar Cary Elwes — for their respective roles as Spanish swordsman Inigo Montoya and Westley the farm boy/The Man in Black — trained for months under Yale fencing coach Henry Harutunian, stunt coordinator and fencer Peter Diamond, and British Olympic fencer Bob Anderson so that they could deliver the film&#8217;s iconic fencing scene without the use of stand-ins or stunt doubles. Both Patinkin and Elwes spent eight to 10 hours a day training as they learned to fence both right-handed and left-handed.
In 2022, Patinkin recalled the scene with fondness. He said that when director Rob Reiner had given the inevitable direction to &#8220;cut, and print,&#8221; he&#8217;d been devastated because he knew that it was over. &#8220;I&#8217;m such a f*ckin crybaby,&#8221; he laughed, choking up as he remembered how he&#8217;d felt in the moment.

Legendary songstress Dolly Parton turned down the Presidential Medal of Freedom three times — from two different presidents.
Parton, who passed away on Tuesday after a brief battle with an unspecified type of cancer, had the award offered to her twice during President Donald Trump&#8217;s first term and a third time during former President Joe Biden&#8217;s administration. All three times, she respectfully declined the honor.
After Biden offered her the award, the country legend explained why she turned down the honor during a 2021 appearance on &#8220;The TODAY Show,&#8221; telling hosts Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager that she&#8217;d ultimately been offered three times.
&#8220;To be honest — in all fairness — I got offered the Freedom Award from the Trump administration,&#8221; Parton revealed. &#8220;I couldn&#8217;t accept it because my husband was ill. Then they asked me again about it, and I wouldn&#8217;t travel because of the COVID.&#8221;
&#8220;So now I feel like if I take it I&#8217;ll be doing politics, so I don&#8217;t — I&#8217;m not sure,&#8221; Parton added. &#8220;I don&#8217;t work for those awards. It&#8217;d be nice, but I&#8217;m not sure that I — you know — that I even deserve it, but it&#8217;s a nice compliment for people to think that I might deserve it.&#8221;
Kotb pushed back, saying she believed &#8220;everybody thinks you might deserve it.&#8221;
Parton always <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/entertainment/celebrities/2026/08/26/dolly-parton-awards-presidential-medal-of-freedom/91471344007/">eschewed politics</a>, saying that she certainly had her opinions but chose to keep them to herself because she valued both her privacy and her fans.
&#8220;First of all, I have as many Republican fans as I do Democrats. I don&#8217;t want to offend anybody, I have a right to myself,&#8221; she said.
The Presidential Medal of Freedom was not the only honor she turned down. Also in 2021, Tennessee lawmakers were considering a bill to have a statue of her placed on the Capitol grounds — and she reached out to them, asking that the bill be removed from consideration.
&#8220;[I don&#8217;t] think putting me on a pedestal is appropriate at this time,&#8221; Parton said. &#8220;I hope, though, that somewhere down the road several years from now or perhaps after I&#8217;m gone if you still feel I deserve it, then I&#8217;m certain I will stand proud in our great State Capitol as a grateful Tennessean.&#8221;
She also asked to have her name removed from the 2022 list of nominees to the Rock &amp; Roll Hall of Fame, saying that she had not &#8220;earned&#8221; the right to be added. The organization declined to remove her, however, and she was inducted anyway.
&#8220;I feel honored that all the people that voted for me did,&#8221; Parton told <a href="https://www.billboard.com/music/awards/dolly-parton-rock-roll-hall-fame-interview-1235066988/">Billboard</a> after she was inducted. &#8220;I never meant to cause trouble or stir up any controversy.&#8221;
Trump honored the late singer by having the flags lowered to half-staff for a week following her passing.
&#8220;There has never been anyone like her, and never will,&#8221; Trump said.

Bryan Kohberger will return to court next summer as he tries to undo the guilty plea that sent him to prison for life for murdering four University of Idaho students.
Judge Steven Hippler, who accepted Kohberger&#8217;s guilty plea and later sentenced him, scheduled a status conference for June 3, 2027, as the court considers Kohberger&#8217;s petition for post-conviction relief. The court also reserved June 17 for an evidentiary hearing.
Kohberger, 31, is currently serving four life sentences without the possibility of parole for the 2022 murders of Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin, in addition to 10 years for breaking into the home.
But one year after admitting in court that he killed the four students, Kohberger reversed course and claimed he was innocent, arguing in a handwritten petition that ineffective assistance from his attorneys led him to falsely confess.

<a href="https://people.com/bryan-kohbeger-signed-confession-revealed-following-guilty-plea-idaho-murders-11768607">Kohberger</a> claimed that he&#8217;d had &#8220;ineffective assistance of counsel” from court-appointed attorney Anne Taylor — who is one of only a few Idaho litigators approved to represent defendants in death penalty cases.
Kohberger claimed that he had not entered his guilty plea &#8220;knowingly or voluntarily because [it] was induced by unkept promises&#8221; and &#8220;because of threats asserted by [his] legal counsel.&#8221; It is unclear what those &#8220;threats&#8221; might have been. In addition, ABC News reported that Kohberger said there was some information withheld prior to his plea agreement that could have helped him.
The prosecution has filed a response to Kohberger&#8217;s petition as well as a motion to dismiss it in its entirety, but Kohberger&#8217;s attorneys have not yet responded.
Kohberger entered his guilty plea on July 2, 2025, just weeks before his trial was supposed to begin — and signed a written factual basis document one day prior in which he took full responsibility for the murders and said that the crimes he&#8217;d committed were &#8220;willful, unlawful, deliberate, with premeditation, and with malice aforethought.&#8221;

More than 50 Americans are among the missing after deadly flash floods swept through several areas along the border between Nepal and China.
The flood was <a href="https://nypost.com/2026/08/26/world-news/flood-hits-china-nepal-border-leaving-many-dead-and-missing/">reportedly triggered</a> when a wall of rock and mud collapsed into a river near the border between Nepal and China-controlled Tibet. Police in Nepal have already reported at least 157 dead on the Himalayan side — according to a <a href="https://apnews.com/article/climate-change-nepal-flash-floods-7262dac22e31258955efa5c28c8fe917">report</a> from the Associated Press — and over 300 are still missing, including 54 American tourists.
Nepal’s foreign minister Shisir Khanal said on Wednesday that the landslide and subsequent flooding had been triggered by an earthquake — one the United States Geological Survey had identified in the region around the time the flooding began — but the USGS later confirmed that the rock wall collapsing had actually been what instruments had recorded as a 5.2 magnitude earthquake.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for an extensive search to find the 265 people that state media has confirmed are still missing.
So far, more than 391 foreign nationals have been reported missing since the flooding began — the majority of them tourists. According to Nepal&#8217;s tourism board, 54 hail from the United States; 142 are from India on pilgrimage to Mount Kailash in Tibet; 34 are from Australia; 33 traveled from the United Kingdom; and 24 are Canadian.
The U.S. Embassy has instructed all remaining American tourists in the region to seek out higher ground and listen for alerts and instructions from local officials: &#8220;We extend our sincere condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives, and our thoughts are with all those affected by this disaster.&#8221;
Flash floods in Trishuli Bazar, in Nepal’s Nuwakot district, destroyed dozens of homes and left more either partially or fully submerged beneath the mud and debris.
