Without support from a single House Democrat, Republican Wisconsin Representative Bryan Steil’s “Stop Insider Trading Act” passed the House Administration Committee and will move on to the House floor for consideration.
If enacted, the bill would restrict members of Congress from buying individual securities and would require notice seven to 14 days before a sale. Lawmakers would be able to continue to buy index and mutual funds, as well as continue investing dividends in previously purchased securities.
Democrats continue to argue that the bill is not strong enough, with many stating that trading should be banned entirely and that lawmakers should be required to fully divest before taking office.
Throughout the two-hour markup, Democratic House reps proposed amendments. Ranking member Rep. Joe Morelle (D-NY) proposed requiring “Congress and the President and the Vice President” to fully divest. Rep. Julie Johnson (D-TX) offered a similar amendment that would mandate full divestment without providing relief from capital gains taxes.
Steil pushed back, warning that mandatory divestment could discourage qualified candidates from seeking office.
“Under the amendment offered by our colleague from Texas, that [capital gains tax] would obviously continue to apply &#8230; [and] for some people that may be a very significant financial impact,” he said.
He added that the financial burden could lead “some individuals … to not come to Congress — and not because they did anything wrong, but because they had a successful private sector career.”
Chris Josephs, the co-founder of Autopilot, an app that allows average Americans to trade the same stocks Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) trades, previously voiced the same concerns to The Daily Wire about legislation requiring full divestment.
“I think it would demotivate a major class of successful people from running,” Josephs said. “Businesspeople are successful. They know how to run things. They know how to lead. They know how to hire. They know how to create strategies. They know how to execute on those strategies. We should not just say no to those potential candidates just because they own businesses and they&#8217;re not gonna sell.”
Josephs told The Daily Wire he suspected that the 2024 election would have looked drastically different with full divestments in place.
“The 2024 election, you got Trump and Vance. Vance is an ex-venture capitalist, ex-business guy. He owns a lot of individual stocks that are private. And then you’ve got Trump, who owns a lot of stuff. On the other side of the ticket, though, you’ve got Kamala, who&#8217;s a career-long politician. You’ve got Tim Walz, who proudly doesn&#8217;t even own a house. And if that bill were to be passed, just based on how that would work, Trump and Vance wouldn&#8217;t be allowed to run unless they sold their stuff, which I doubt they would have.”
After full-divestment amendments were rejected, Rep. Norma Torres (D-CA) introduced an amendment to prohibit the reinvestment of dividends. Republicans voted it down, keeping dividend reinvestment permissible under the bill.
Steil defended the decision, arguing that dividend payments do not pose the same insider trading risks.
“Those dividends are structured within the company with advanced notice, outside of the control of any given member. It doesn&#8217;t carry the risk of insider trading,” he said. “Because it doesn&#8217;t carry the risk of insider trading, what we allowed for was the reinvestment of dividends.”
He later emphasized the bill’s intent, saying, “The focus here is to prevent members from being able to profit off of insider information — not to make elected officials poor.&#8221;

The negative portrayal of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents by Democrats is leading to violence in the streets, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt warned on Thursday after The Daily Wire’s Mary Margaret Olohan asked her about rising unrest.

To learn the real story, Leavitt urged Americans to turn to the Department of Homeland Security’s statement.
“This ICE agent was executing a targeted operation against a Venezuelan illegal alien who was unlawfully present in this country,” Leavitt said. “When this ICE agent tried to detain the individual, three more of his comrades came rushing out of the house and started ambushing and attacking the ICE agent. They used a shovel or a broom to smash his face in, and so yes, that agent had to use self-defense and take up his weapon to protect his own life.”
The press secretary reiterated that ICE agents and law enforcement are enforcing the country’s immigration laws while “elected officials are encouraging violence” against “our brave men and women in law enforcement.”
“Democratic governors and mayors” were not the only targets of Leavitt; the press secretary had a fiery exchange with a reporter who brought up Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s comment that ICE agents “are doing everything correctly.”
The reporter asked Leavitt, given that Renee Good was shot in the head, how ICE agents could be doing “everything correctly.” Leavitt first responded with a question, asking the reporter: “Why was Renee Good unfortunately and tragically killed?” The reporter answered, “Because an ICE agent acted recklessly and killed her unjustifiably?”

Leavitt responded, “Oh, okay, so you’re a biased reporter with a left-wing opinion. … Do you have the numbers of how many American citizens were killed at the hands of illegal aliens who ICE is trying to remove from this country? Just hours after Renee Good was fatally shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent she attempted to hit with her car, protesters began descending on Minneapolis.
By midnight on the day of Good’s death, protesters had blocked off both sides of the street with torn-off doors, trash cans, wooden crates, and signs adorned with quotes from Assata Shakur, a woman the FBI put on its “Most Wanted Terrorists” <a href="https://www.npr.org/2013/05/07/181914429/fbi-most-wanted-terrorists-list-who-is-assata-shakur" target="_blank" rel="noopener">list</a>.
For five days in sub-freezing temperatures, they marched and chanted that Good didn’t deserve to die. Many said ICE agents deserved to die.

The shooting occurred at 34th Street and Portland Avenue, where roughly 30 candles were set in the snow to mark the vigil site.
The Daily Wire spoke with mostly Minneapolis residents that night, but by Thursday morning, the crowds began to include people from across the country. Just before 7:00 a.m., about 2,000 protesters lined up at the St. Paul ICE Field Office. While the crowd from the previous night seemed solemn, this crowd carried intense anger.
“I started yelling at them, you know, just calling them names and the basic stuff.”
What did the basic stuff mean? The protesters answered soon enough.
“Go kill yourself,” one shouted.
“You f*cking traitorous scum,” yelled another.
From 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., protesters hurled insults at ICE officers as their vehicles arrived at the facility. When demonstrators blocked the roadway, officers responded by sending tear gas and pepper balls at the crowd’s feet.
By 9:00 a.m., the crowd dispersed from the ICE field office. On the way out, a woman wearing an AFL-CIO vest quipped, “We hit our goal time.”
One woman told The Daily Wire that it felt wrong for her to be at Good’s memorial because she’s a white woman with a lot of privilege. “I feel like white tears are not always helpful or necessary,” she said.
At one point, The Daily Wire team swung by a local McDonald’s. On the front door was a sign that read “No ICE Access In This Business.”

That night marked the first of two major evening protests. Despite sleet and snow, an estimated 4,000 to 5,000 people gathered to protest ICE and mourn Good. Protesters sprayed graffiti on buildings and disrupted traffic, prompting several nearby businesses to close their doors.

Friday followed the same pattern: morning protests, visit to the shooting site, and plans for nighttime demonstrations. Protesters claimed they had &#8220;received word” that ICE agents were staying at the Canopy Hotel. By 7:00 p.m., streets were blocked, and demonstrators swarmed the area with whistles, musical instruments, and noise-making devices intended to disrupt the officers’ stay.
One sign read, “We’ve done it before and we’ll do it again.” The sign appeared to reference the 2020 Minneapolis protests following George Floyd’s death, when large parts of the city were damaged.

During Friday’s protest, police and sheriff patrol cars were swarmed, and streets were blocked for roughly seven hours, from 7:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. The night ended with multiple arrests as protesters were handcuffed and taken into custody.
On Saturday morning, The Daily Wire made one last stop. America’s frustration with congressional stock trading exploded after former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) trades were exposed by Autopilot investment app co-founder <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/chris-josephs-knows-pelosis-stock-trades-better-than-anyone-he-says-they-should-be-banned">Chris Josephs</a>. Five years later, lawmakers may finally be forced to respond.
On Monday, Rep. Bryan Steil (R-WI) <a href="https://x.com/RepBryanSteil">introduced</a> the “Stop Insider Trading Act,” delivering a sharp message to his colleagues. “If you want to trade stocks, you should go to Wall Street,” he said.
&#8220;We are very excited by this bill as we believe it is the most reasonable one proposed to date,” Josephs told The Daily Wire.
Steil’s bill would prohibit lawmakers from buying individual stocks during their tenure, though it would not force them to divest securities they owned before taking office. And while their buying power is limited to index funds, their selling power is left largely unrestricted. Lawmakers would be able to sell individual securities as long as they provided notice at least seven days before the trade.
The legislation does not put limits on other types of investments such as real estate, bonds, or commodities.
Josephs said the bill meaningfully tightens the rules. &#8220;Although it&#8217;s not perfect, it has stricter penalties and forces politicians to buy broader market index funds, which are much harder to insider trade on.”
The bill doesn’t just end with lawmakers; it puts the same restrictions on their spouses and dependent children. Previous efforts have drawn criticism for potentially limiting the careers of the children of the lawmakers. Addressing those concerns, the legislation limits coverage to minor children and adult children still claimed as dependents on a lawmaker’s tax return.
Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) takes credit for getting this legislation to the floor.
&#8220;After years of insider trading, the discharge petition we brought forward and the members both Democrat and Republican who chose to put their names on it to stop the individual trading of stocks has finally worked,&#8221; the lawmaker said. &#8220;A bill is expected to be passed out of committee as early as this week that will prohibit members of Congress from buying individual stocks.&#8221;
<a href="https://x.com/RepLuna/status/1996664845375078584">Previously</a>, Luna argued that half-measures are insufficient. “The only way to close the loophole is to ban congressional stock trading in its entirety.&#8221;
Along with Luna&#8217;s support, Steil says he has support from House GOP leadership, who have promised to give it a floor vote once the legislation is debated and amendments to the text are considered. Steil looks at the legislation as “an opportunity to regain America’s trust.”
However, the bill is not the only recent effort to attempt to “regain the country’s trust.” In 2020, several senators were accused of trading stocks after private COVID briefings, triggering bipartisan outrage. From 2021 to 2023, multiple bills were introduced, including mandatory blind trusts and outright trading bans, but none became law.
Any proposal would ultimately require lawmakers to vote to restrict their own trading, a hurdle Congress has repeatedly failed to clear. Josephs acknowledged the familiar pattern. 
“We&#8217;ve seen this rodeo before though, so still lots to come on if it&#8217;ll actually pass, but it definitely is a step in the right direction.&#8221;

‘Opportunity To Regain America’s Trust’: New Bill Aims To Close Lucrative Congressional Loophole

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani&#8217;s Director of Tenant Protection might need some protection herself after a tough first week on the job left her in tears.
On Monday, Cea Weaver caught flak for old social media posts, including one claiming home ownership was a weapon of white supremacy. On Tuesday, she struggled to defend the Mamdani administration&#8217;s controversial housing policies in a Spectrum News interview. And on Wednesday, a reporter confronted the housing radical about her mother&#8217;s $1.6 million Nashville home.
Instead of responding, Weaver <a href="https://nypost.com/2026/01/07/us-news/zohran-mamdanis-tenant-advocate-cea-weaver-breaks-down-crying-when-asked-about-hypocritical-gentrification-comments/">reportedly</a> started crying and ran back inside her apartment. The 37-year-old activist has a history of complaining about gentrification, including in her Brooklyn neighborhood — where she is herself a gentrifier.
It&#8217;s a rough start for Weaver, who is expected to play a major role in Mamdani&#8217;s administration. The tenant czar is slated to direct Mamdani&#8217;s &#8220;Rental Ripoff Hearings,&#8221; struggle sessions in which residents of all five boroughs will be able to publicly voice their complaints about their rental experience.
&#8220;Working New Yorkers will be able to speak about the challenges they face,&#8221; from behind a microphone, Mamdani says, &#8220;from poor building conditions to hidden fees on rent payments.” The Mamdani administration says it will then identify “common themes” in the complaints to “directly inform policy interventions to take on these ripoff tactics.”
Mamdani already gave one tenant the floor at a press conference announcing the “Rental Ripoff” hearings. Josie Wells is a tenant at 85 Clarkson Avenue, a rent-stabilized apartment building in Brooklyn. 85 Clarkson Avenue is one of the many properties owned by the Pinnacle Group, which filed for bankruptcy in May 2025, and was featured at this press conference.
At the press conference, a sign read, “As we rise, Pinnacle will fall.” The sign was displayed by the Union of Pinnacle Tenants, who organized to fight “for a say in the auction process to ensure that repairs are made, our rent stabilization is respected, and our buildings aren’t sold to yet another abusive landlord.”
Advisors to Pinnacle Group <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-12-29/bankrupt-nyc-rental-buildings-get-451-million-offer-from-summit">said</a> that “the bankruptcies were caused by a sharp rise in interest rates, inflation-driven increases in operating expenses, and lower rent collections.”
Weaver says the Mamdani administration has gotten involved to ensure the building goes to someone who can pay for upkeep while also complying with rent price caps.
&#8220;The city intervened in the bankruptcy proceeding in order for the city to take a hard look at the conditions that are in the building as well as a plan that has been put forth by the top bidder, because we want to ensure that whoever is taking on this portfolio is able to comply with both rent stabilization laws as well as housing maintenance code.&#8221;
As of now, it is unclear if there is a bidder who fits that description.

A shocking new report from the House Oversight Committee says the Biden administration broke the law in its crusade against the alcohol industry.
Last year, the Biden administration released a report that claimed there was “a very direct link between alcohol consumption and increased cancer risk.” Surgeon General Vivek Murthy called for putting this warning on all alcohol products and called for a reassessment of the guideline limits for alcohol consumption to account for cancer risk.
As The Daily Wire reported at the time, this was the culmination of the Biden administration’s quiet efforts to redo America’s dietary restrictions to recommend Americans never drink alcohol. The relatively secret effort, which flaunted years of precedent and drew on the recommendations of Canadian citizens, largely flew under the radar.
The congressional investigation found the Biden administration’s alcohol study was both biased and unlawful. The report comes just hours before Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins hold a press conference in the White House Briefing Room, where they&#8217;re expected to unveil new guidelines.
The <a href="https://oversight.house.gov/report/a-study-fraught-with-bias-how-the-biden-administrations-alcohol-intake-and-health-study-tried-to-undermine-the-2025-2030-dietary-guidelines-for-americans/">report</a>, titled “‘A Study Fraught With Bias: How the Biden administration’s Alcohol Intake and Health Study Tried To Undermine the 2025-2030 Dietary Guidelines For Americans,” details a yearlong congressional investigation into the alcohol and health study authorized by the Biden administration in 2022. Biden’s study found a link between cancer and alcohol.
According to the report, the Biden administration directed the Interagency Coordinating Committee on the Prevention of Underage Drinking to conduct an alcohol intake and health study intended to influence the 2025-2030 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. House Republicans argue the effort violated federal law.
Congress had already authorized the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) and appropriated $1.3 million to conduct the sole alcohol related study meant to inform the next round of dietary guidelines. Lawmakers say the Biden administration&#8217;s parallel effort was not only duplicative but also designed to reach a predetermined conclusion.
House investigators found that all six members selected for Biden’s study were &#8220;anti-alcohol advocates who had conducted previous research linking negative health outcomes with alcohol.&#8221; Three of the six experts in Biden’s study reside in Canada and were involved in developing Canada’s controversial 2023 alcohol guidance, which concluded that no amount of alcohol consumption is safe.
House investigators found that all six members selected for Biden’s study were &#8220;anti-alcohol advocates who had conducted previous research linking negative health outcomes with alcohol.&#8221;

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang unveiled the company’s new AI supercomputer, Vera Rubin, designed to tackle one of the biggest challenges with Artificial Intelligence: the skyrocketing demand for computing power.
As AI models grow in size and complexity, the need for powerful hardware has surged. According to Huang, the largest AI models are increasingly driving an unprecedented demand for GPUs and infrastructure.
On average, Huang <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tyLSDGfjk2g">said</a>, AI models are increasing in size by a factor of ten each year, emphasizing the need for systems that can keep pace with rapidly evolving workloads. Vera Rubin is Nvidia’s answer: a rack-scale supercomputer built from six completely new chips, each engineered to work together as one cohesive system. The platform is named in honor of Vera Rubin, the pioneering American astronomer who provided compelling evidence for dark matter in the late 1970s.
To design the new supercomputer, Huang says Nvidia had to break one of its internal rules.
“We have a rule inside our company and it’s a good rule. No new generation should have more than one or two chips changed.” Nvidia’s Vera Rubin kept none of the chips the same, coming out with six new chips.
Huang said Nvidia had no choice but to break the rule to keep up with Moore’s Law. Gordon Moore, co-founder of Intel, developed Moore’s Law, which theorized that transistor counts double every two years. Transistors are the processing tools for chips and originally were millimeters in size, but today, they are atomic-sized.
Given shrinking the size of the now almost atomic transistors would be extremely challenging, Nvidia co-designed six chips to work together, achieving higher performance without significantly increasing transistor count.
Huang says “each one of them [the chips] are revolutionary and the best of its kind.”
Nvidia claims that Vera Rubin delivers twice the computational power of Blackwell, its previous-generation system, while using less energy. The combination of liquid cooling, optimized chip design, and high-speed interconnects contributes to this efficiency. Beyond raw performance, the system also introduces confidential computing and is fully encrypted. This allows companies to deploy AI models in shared or public environments while ensuring that their data and models remain secure and inaccessible to others.
The completed system weighs nearly two tons and houses 1,152 GPUs, all cooled 100% by liquid, compared with Nvidia’s previous generation Blackwell system, which is 80% liquid cooled and 20% air-cooled. Liquid cooling is more efficient than air, as it absorbs heat more effectively, allowing the system to maintain peak performance with less energy.
Vera Rubin is already in full production and expected to be available for purchase in the second half of 2026. Notable leaders in tech have started praising Nvidia&#8217;s latest invention.
Elon Musk said the &#8220;NVIDIA Rubin will be a rocket engine for AI.&#8221; Mark Zuckerberg said the supercomputer would help create the next leap in artificial intelligence.

WASHINGTON—The suspect arrested last October with <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/man-who-targeted-supreme-court-justices-with-explosives-arraigned-in-dc-court">more than 100 explosive devices</a> outside of St. Matthew’s Cathedral ahead of the annual Red Mass that marked the start of the Supreme Court term was back in court on Tuesday. 
Louis Geri appeared in D.C. Superior Court for a status hearing. During the hearing, the court addressed a potential resolution between the prosecution and the defense. Initially, Geri was set to appear back in court on February 5, but was rescheduled to a later date at the apparent request of Geri. After February 5 was mentioned, Geri whispered to his attorney. After the two discussed, his attorney said Louis “doesn’t want to come back until there’s a resolution.” D.C. Superior Court Judge Jennifer Di Toro acknowledged Geri’s request. 
Previously, Geri’s defense rejected a plea deal offered by the prosecution. Due to a judge caseload transfer, Geri’s case was reassigned from Judge Heide Herrmann to Judge Di Toro. Geri faces charges of one count of Unlawful Manufacture or Possession of  Weapon of Mass Destruction and False Report of a Weapon of Mass Destruction. 
Geri was apprehended after stepping outside his tent to urinate on October 5 of last year. His tent, which allegedly contained the explosives, was set up on the steps of St. Matthew’s Cathedral, <a href="https://www.wusa9.com/article/news/crime/court-documents-give-insight-arrest-man-molotov-coctails-outside-dc-cathedral/65-a8db0416-0ce8-42a7-934a-1e84a4828a5b">according</a> to WUSA9. Authorities <a href="https://eaccess.dccourts.gov/eaccess/search.page.3.1?x=IGWQXnhkXfdw23D7wILJbHXmSW75pj1pCysMq7pwvjW14loRdrX2QrZD528XkwKiXbnDekXPF*4Pp8t52jcGzUpVuauGXvd9c6WZN8FE3opp2fTIkseP5epTZMbdG81OG9heL8vJ8ueuO-oFZyr5X6WLNoGF25MSM7bt2TCUAa4">say</a> he had gathered materials for the devices in Arkansas and was aware “that multiple public figures would likely attend” the event and that the “potential for damage was incredibly high.” 
Due to security concerns at the time, Supreme Court justices did not attend the Red Mass, which is an annual event held by the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle, wherein the parish prays for the High Court at the beginning of a new term.
On Tuesday, Judge Di Toro granted a mutual continuance, indicating that both sides agreed to delay proceedings while assessing if the case could be resolved without a trial. The court is set to reconvene on February 19 to discuss the case’s next steps.

After American troops captured Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro in the early hours of Saturday morning, Washington quickly turned its attention to his number two: Vice President Delcy Rodriguez.
Rodriguez has remained loyal since Maduro&#8217;s capture.
&#8220;There is only one president in Venezuela, and his name is Nicolás Maduro,&#8221; she said in an address to Venezuela after his capture. Rodriguez, daughter of the Liga Socialista party founder, Jorge Antonio Rodriguez,  rose through the ranks alongside her brother, Jorge, who currently serves as the President of Venezuela&#8217;s National Assembly. Upon naming her vice president in 2018, Maduro said she was a &#8220;young woman, brave, seasoned, daughter of a martyr, revolutionary and tested in a thousand battles.&#8221;
But not everyone is sold on Rodriguez.
“I don’t think we can count on Delcy Rodriguez to be friendly to the United States until she proves it,” Senator Tom Cotton <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2026/01/04/politics/video/venezuela-strikes">told</a> CNN anchor Dana Bash on Sunday.
The Arkansas Republican acknowledged that, while it&#8217;s possible Rodriguez could attempt to work with the United States, it&#8217;s unlikely.
&#8220;There are recent examples of anti-American leaders around the world turning over a new leaf,” Cotton said, citing Libya&#8217;s Muammar al-Qaddafi and his reconciliation with the West in 2003. “But they made concrete concessions that benefited the United States. Delcy Rodriguez and other sanctioned and indicted ministers in Venezuela were in league with Maduro until yesterday so I don’t think we can count on them to be pro-American at all.”
On Saturday, Trump <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SsdkClL2_bg">noted</a> Maduro’s selection of Rodriguez had raised concerns, but said she was, for now, cooperating with Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
“Well, I understand she was just sworn in, but she was, as you know, picked by Maduro. So Marco&#8217;s working on that directly,” Trump said. “He [Rubio] just had a conversation with her, and she&#8217;s essentially willing to do what we think is necessary to make Venezuela great again.&#8221;
Cotton later said that her promised cooperation with the United States aligns with Trump’s remarks about Washington effectively “running Venezuela.”
“When the President said the United States is going to be running Venezuela, he means the new leaders of Venezuela need to meet our demands,” clarified Cotton.
Rodriguez also served as Venezuela’s oil minister, presiding over an industry Trump has repeatedly singled out as requiring United States oversight.
“As everyone knows, the oil business in Venezuela has been a bust, a total bust, for a long period of time,” he exclaimed at Saturday’s press conference. “They were pumping almost nothing by comparison to what they could have been pumping and what could&#8217;ve taken place. We&#8217;re going to have our very large United States oil companies, the biggest anywhere in the world, go in, spend billions of dollars, fix the badly broken infrastructure, the oil infrastructure, and start making money for the country.”
Beyond the energy sector, Trump argued that Venezuela needs a government capable of acting in the interests of its people: “We can’t take a chance that somebody else takes over Venezuela that doesn’t have the good of the Venezuelan people in mind.”
Cotton clarified that the Venezuelan government&#8217;s recognition of a new leader does not equate to recognition by the United States.
“We don’t recognize Delcy Rodriguez as the legitimate ruler of Venezuela. We didn’t recognize Nicolás Maduro as a legitimate ruler … It is a fact that she and other indicted and sanctioned officials are in Venezuela and have control of the military and security services. That does not make them a legitimate leader.”
Trump demonstrated that lack of recognition by issuing a warning to Venezuela&#8217;s remaining political and military figures, saying, “All political and military figures in Venezuela should understand what happened to Maduro can happen to them. It will happen to them if they aren&#8217;t just, fair, even to their people.”
For now, the president says he does not think the United States will need to initiate a second attack, but that if it becomes necessary the United States is prepared: “The first wave, if you&#8217;d like to call it that, the first attack was so successful we probably don&#8217;t have to do a second, but we&#8217;re prepared to do a second wave.”

Early Saturday morning, the United States <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/united-states-carries-out-military-strikes-on-venezuela-captures-president-nicolas-maduro">launched</a> a “large-scale” military strike on Venezuela and captured President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. World leaders are weighing in and are divided on the United States’ actions.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva <a href="https://x.com/LulaOficial">condemned</a> the strike, saying, “The bombings on Venezuelan territory and the capture of its president cross an unacceptable line.” He called for the international community to “respond vigorously to this episode.”
Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez echoed Silva’s call for an international response, <a href="https://x.com/DiazCanelB/status/2007359344829141372">saying</a>, “Cuba denounces and urgently demands the reaction of the international community against the criminal attack by the U.S. on Venezuela.”
Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Russia was “extremely alarmed” by the United States’ strike. “Such actions, if they actually occurred, constitute an unacceptable infringement on the sovereignty of an independent state, respect for which is a key principle of international law.”
U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer neither condemned nor supported the strike, <a href="https://x.com/SkyNews/status/2007429055365144708">saying</a>, “Well, I want to establish the facts first. I want to speak to President Trump. I want to speak to allies.” The prime minister did make clear that “the UK was not involved in any way in this operation.”
Like Starmer, Italian Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani <a class="c-link" href="https://x.com/Antonio_Tajani/status/2007421630134235555" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" data-stringify-link="https://x.com/Antonio_Tajani/status/2007421630134235555" data-sk="tooltip_parent">weighed in without</a> offering either endorsement or condemnation, stating, “I continue to follow closely and in coordination with the Prime Minister the developments of the situation in Venezuela with particular regard to the safety of the Italian community.”

Milei’s Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno <a href="https://x.com/JMilei?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor">added</a>, “Argentina trusts that these events represent a decisive advance against narcoterrorism that affects the region and, at the same time, open a stage that allows the Venezuelan people to fully recover democracy, the rule of law, and respect for human rights in accordance with the principles of international law, and put an end to the oppression exercised for years by the authoritarian regime.”
Ecuador’s leader Daniel Noboa Azin has a <a href="https://x.com/DanielNoboaOk/status/2007421352719069620">warning</a> for all &#8220;narco criminals,&#8221; saying, “To all the narco chavista criminals, your time is coming. Your structure will completely collapse across the entire continent.” He then offered support to Maduro’s opposition, Maria Corina Machado: “To Maria Corina, Edmondo Gonzalez, and the Venezuelan people: it’s time to reclaim your country. You have an ally in Ecuador.”
Ukraine has <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/world-reacts-us-strikes-venezuela-2026-01-03/?utm_source=chatgpt.com">emphasized</a> the importance of democratic change in Venezuela.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said that Mexico “strongly condemns and rejects” the United States&#8217; strike in Venezuela and that the United States must end “all acts of aggression against the Venezuelan government and people.” President Trump said earlier this morning that he has offered Sheinbaum his support to “take out cartels” and then said &#8220;something has to be done in Mexico.”
Iran&#8217;s Supreme Leader Imam Sayyid Ali Khamenei <a href="https://x.com/khamenei_ir/status/2007402195877290254">said</a>, “What’s important is one realizes an enemy wants to force something on one’s government or nation with false claims, they must stand firmly against that enemy. We won’t give in to them.” He added “We’ll bring the enemy to its knees.”

It was a chilly New Year’s Day in New York, but crowds nevertheless huddled together in front of City Hall to watch as Zohran Mamdani was sworn in as the city’s new mayor.
The three-hour inauguration ceremony featured a who’s who of the American Left. Reflecting on the day, Matt Bernstein — host of the “A Bit Fruity” podcast who describes himself as a “friendly queer Jew with very long nails” — <a href="https://www.instagram.com/reels/DS--n3NAWhY/">declared</a> that “the future is unapologetically pro-queer, pro-palestine, pro-worker and ready to tax the rich.” 
You may be thinking “well, surely it wasn’t that bad.” And you’re right. It was worse.

We Watched Zohran Mamdani’s Insane Socialist Inauguration So You Didn’t Have To

With the median home price hovering north of $433,000 and no signs of mortgage rates dropping anytime soon, many Americans may have to put off their dream of buying a house.
Many of those who do buy homes may have begun their search on Zillow, a popular real estate website. Some might even take advantage of a Zillow Home Loan, conveniently available on the same site as the listings.
Zillow says its home loans are &#8220;competitive.&#8221; And while they were slightly cheaper than competitors in 2022, they&#8217;ve grown steadily more expensive in subsequent years — and a <a href="https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=5951355">new study</a> funded by CoStar suggests that Zillow is overcharging borrowers.
Steven C. Salop of the Georgetown University Law Center reports that borrowers who used Zillow Home Loans paid higher mortgage costs than those who borrowed from other lenders. On average, consumers who chose Zillow paid 10 to 15% more in annual percentage rate.
In 2024, Zillow’s mortgages carried an average cost of about $4,600 more than competitors on a typical loan size of $337,000. That difference amounts to roughly $21 more per month over a 30-year mortgage — assuming the loan is held full-term.
The study concludes that lower-income borrowers were hardest hit. For borrowers making $60,000 or less in 2024, Zillow loans cost an added 3% of the loan’s value over time, according to the analysis. The study also found racial disparities in pricing, alleging in 2024 that white non-Hispanic and Asian borrowers saw a 1.5% surcharge while black borrowers faced a 2.9% surcharge, compared with similar borrowers at other lenders.

Salop analyzed federal mortgage data from 2022 through 2024, comparing Zillow Home Loans with all other lenders. The sample focused on 30-year fixed-rate purchase mortgages and sought to compare nearly identical loans by controlling for borrower characteristics, loan type, geography, and market conditions.
Zillow has pushed back on the report, <a href="https://www.onlinemarketplaces.com/articles/zillow-challenges-inaccurate-study-as-author-defends-findings/?referrer=grok.com">saying</a> it draws on inaccurate information and that the study was funded by a competitor.
“Zillow Home Loans is committed to both fair lending and pro-consumer practices,&#8221; the company said in a statement. &#8220;We have a robust fair lending compliance program.&#8221;
Zillow is currently <a href="https://www.reuters.com/legal/government/zillow-hit-with-class-action-over-alleged-mortgage-steering-scheme-2025-11-10/">facing</a> two class-action lawsuits alleging the company “operates programs in which its affiliate real estate agents receive high-value sales leads only if they meet internal quotas for securing pre-approved mortgages from Zillow Home Loans.”
