The Trump administration is cracking down on the homeless crisis in Los Angeles after more than $1.6 billion in federal funding failed to deliver results.
The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced on Thursday that all federal funds going to the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) will be halted. The suspension will remain in place until the results of HUD’s federal investigation are out, per <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/trump-admin-yanks-funding-la-homeless-agency-explosive-fraud-investigation">Fox News</a>. 
“Under President Trump’s leadership, HUD will fund results, not corrupt failure or the homeless industrial complex,” said Secretary Scott Turner.
“Year after year, hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars were funneled to LAHSA with little accountability. Meanwhile, homelessness skyrocketed. Taxpayers will no longer bankroll an organization that puts its own self-interests ahead of the Americans it was created to serve.”
The department says LA’s homeless agency has had issues dating back to 2007. Despite millions of dollars flowing into the agency every year, the city’s agency staff reported it was falling behind on its bills. LAHSA owes roughly $69 million to shelters, housing, and other service providers. Most of the outstanding balance is three months past due. HUD pointed to multiple audits, assessments, and lawsuits since late 2024 that identified delayed and misdirected payments, inadequate oversight, and failures to properly monitor programs funded with taxpayer dollars.
The agency also raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest.
In one example that HUD cited, LAHSA approved more than $2 million in contracts involving an organization that employed the husband of then-CEO Va Lecia Adams Kellum in a senior position. Federal officials allege the relationship was not properly disclosed and may have violated HUD conflict-of-interest requirements. Kellum resigned from her position earlier this year amid mounting scrutiny of the agency.
Los Angeles County has also moved away from the agency. In April 2025, county supervisors voted to withdraw roughly $350 million in annual funding from LAHSA beginning July 1, 2026. Since 2024, LA’s homeless population rose <a href="https://nextcity.org/urbanist-news/los-angeles-homeless-population-skid-row?gad_source=1&amp;gad_campaignid=23665299278&amp;gbraid=0AAAAADG_lLvnQDwCb4w-TafYDZC6WL8Rs&amp;gclid=CjwKCAjwuanRBhBSEiwAY5y6VyDNjR3BNFbKcEdT3FlTAtjXKDr04xFFkufmrVOzjHQZ284cwg7BuBoCZ5YQAvD_BwE">12%</a> despite years of record spending. 
Current LA Mayor Karen Bass <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/media/spencer-pratt-seizes-homelessness-remarks-karen-bass-blasts-democrat-failures">said</a> she’s encountered government officials who are &#8220;resistant to ending street homelessness.” Bass continued, “The city and the county never made that commitment before, and I found something that surprised me. I found a lot of people who work internally in the system who were very resistant to ending street homelessness.” 
The scale of Los Angeles&#8217; homelessness crisis is reshaping the region&#8217;s politics. The issue allowed Republican mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt to gain unusual traction in a Democratic stronghold, underscoring how homelessness has become one of the defining political challenges facing California&#8217;s leaders. 
Pratt appeared poised to advance, holding the second-place position until seven days after the primary election, when Nithya Raman pulled ahead and secured a spot in the general election.

A video shared by the news outlet features a woman who claimed familiarity with the incident and said Ogilvie lived in the area for about two years, and that &#8220;the foreigners only moved in four days ago and [Ogilvie] was doing everything to help them move in.&#8221;
The woman also alleged that Ogilvie was ambushed and suggested Alodid may have had an accomplice. Authorities have not confirmed either claim.

Ogilvie suffered devastating injuries during the attack, including the loss of his eye and deep slash wounds to his head and back. Video footage circulating online appears to show Alodid pinning Ogilvie to the ground on a Belfast street as a bystander shouts, &#8220;He&#8217;s trying to cut his head off.&#8221;
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/migrant-arrested-after-attempted-beheading-caught-on-video">condemned</a> the attack but did not mention the suspect&#8217;s immigration status. 
“The horrific attack in Belfast last night is sickening,” <a href="https://x.com/Keir_Starmer/status/2064273082580140525">said</a> Starmer. “I have absolutely no tolerance for abhorrent scenes of violence like this on our streets. My thoughts are first and foremost with the victim, and I thank the first responders, including members of the public who intervened.”
The BBC <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cly0d13e4geo">reports</a> that Alodid entered the United Kingdom in 2023 and was granted refugee status until 2028. 
Anti-immigration protests have since <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/belfast-northern-ireland-stabbing-far-right-calls-anti-immigration-protests/">erupted</a> across Northern Ireland. Hundreds of protesters reportedly gathered following the incident, with buses and vehicles set ablaze, roads blocked, and police helicopters circling overhead. 
Leaders of Northern Ireland’s major political parties issued a joint statement calling for peace. 
“We call for calm and for space to allow justice to take its course,” the statement read. 
The unrest comes weeks after Vice President JD Vance, speaking at a White House press briefing, <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/may/19/jd-vance-uk-anti-immigration-rally-comments">urged</a> anti-immigration activists in London to “keep on going” and to reject “this idea that the way to generate prosperity is to bring in millions and millions of unvetted people and drop them into your neighborhoods.”

In less than a week, visitors from around the world will descend on Atlanta for the FIFA World Cup 2026, but many residents worry that the city&#8217;s transit system, known as MARTA, isn&#8217;t ready after three attacks in the past two weeks, including one killing.
&#8220;I&#8217;m nervous that it won&#8217;t be ready by next week for the world coming here,&#8221; one passenger told The Daily Wire.
At MARTA&#8217;s North Avenue Station, riders described a system they believe has become increasingly unsafe, citing violent crime, fare evasion, and a lack of visible security. The Daily Wire interviewed several passengers at the station, many of whom said they no longer feel safe while riding.
&#8220;When I say it&#8217;s not safe, there is no security,&#8221; one passenger said, pointing to multiple people walking through fare gates without paying. MARTA officials say fare evasion costs the transit system <a href="https://www.gpb.org/news/2025/06/25/how-can-you-be-confident-riders-officials-question-atlanta-transit-readiness-ahead">$7 million</a> per year.

Other riders said they have witnessed fights on trains. One passenger described an incident in which another rider struck a young girl without provocation. &#8220;There was a little Hispanic girl that got hit on the train,&#8221; the passenger said. &#8220;She was crying. It was really sad to see.&#8221;
Passengers also said weapons are not an uncommon sight. &#8220;Somebody dropped something. It was a gun,&#8221; one rider said. Another passenger recalled watching someone pull out a knife inside a crowded train car. &#8220;I&#8217;ve heard everything from death to rape to murder,&#8221; another rider said.
Several passengers said the trains get worse at night. 
&#8220;Absolutely not,&#8221; one rider said when asked if they felt safe riding MARTA at night.
&#8220;Nighttime is when I like to call them the nightcrawlers — the people you wouldn&#8217;t see in the daytime. The train is their home,&#8221; said another person. 
The riders&#8217; fears are reflected in the numbers and data. 
MARTA openly subsidizes fares for homeless riders while paying riders say they are left to deal with the consequences, such as drug use, outbursts, and mental disorders that can accompany those taking shelter on the train.

Violent incidents on MARTA&#8217;s rail lines occur at nearly four times the national average for public transit systems, according to federal officials. 
Those concerns have drawn the attention of Washington. The Trump administration launched a federal investigation into MARTA following a series of violent attacks on the transit system.
&#8220;Every American should be disturbed by the horrific crimes we have seen on MARTA in the last month,&#8221; U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy said.
&#8220;No one should be forced to fear for their safety simply because they choose to ride public transit,&#8221; Georgia Republican Gov. Brian Kemp <a href="https://www.11alive.com/article/sports/soccer/world-cup/kemp-offers-help-to-marta-all-they-gotta-do-is-call-and-ask-us/85-1b493562-a5b2-4c9e-8859-809741d9f59b?utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=facebook_11Alive">told</a> Atlanta Democratic Mayor Andre Dickens. “All they gotta do is call and ask us.” 
And while riders raise questions, Dickens projects confidence in the city’s transit system for the World Cup. “MARTA is going to step up big,” he <a href="https://www.11alive.com/article/sports/soccer/world-cup/atlanta-mayor-andre-dickens-city-officials-world-cup-pep-rally/85-87e12a83-601e-43cc-9030-3e77d59d94aa?utm_source=chatgpt.com">said</a>. 
While MARTA operates independently of City Hall, Dickens is not entirely removed from the transit system&#8217;s leadership. The mayor appoints three members to MARTA&#8217;s board of directors, giving him significant influence over the authority&#8217;s direction and oversight. As Atlanta prepares to welcome visitors from around the globe, that relationship is likely to intensify scrutiny of the mayor&#8217;s handling of transit safety.

Inflation ticked up to 4.2% in May, according to data released Wednesday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. 
The <a href="https://www.bls.gov/news.release/cpi.nr0.htm">4.2%</a> increase was in line with expectations, with analysts predicting a 0.4 percentage-point increase from April&#8217;s 3.8% annual rate. The inflation increase was driven primarily by higher energy costs as oil prices surged amid tensions in the Middle East. The inflation report showed energy prices accounted for more than 60% of the monthly increase in the Consumer Price Index, with gasoline prices rising sharply, up <a href="https://www.bls.gov/news.release/cpi.nr0.htm">8.6%</a> before seasonal adjustment. Shelter costs also continued to climb, rising 0.3% during the month, while food prices increased 0.2%. 
&#8220;It&#8217;s not a good number,&#8221; former Dallas Fed President Richard Fisher <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/video/2026/06/10/former-dallas-fed-pres-fisher-on-may-cpi-expect-continued-pressure-on-the-fixed-income-market.html">told</a> CNBC. &#8220;I think the consumer is under tremendous pressure, and we&#8217;re just going to have to see if this is going to abate.&#8221; 
Fisher added that if he were Fed chair, he would leave interest rates unchanged for now to allow more time to assess the economy.

Most people have never heard of the century-old shipping law President Donald Trump temporarily suspended for the second time last month to ease fuel costs and stabilize supply chains during the Iran war. 
The law, known as the Jones Act, was signed by President Woodrow Wilson and requires that goods transported between U.S. ports be carried on ships that are American-built, American-owned, and American-crewed. The legislation was designed to rebuild America&#8217;s shipping industry after German U-boats decimated America&#8217;s merchant fleet during World War I. 
Trump initially waived the act for 60 days and then <a href="https://www.spglobal.com/energy/en/news-research/latest-news/refined-products/042426-trump-extends-jones-act-waiver-to-ease-fuel-costs-amid-iran-war">extended</a> the waiver another 90 on May 18. Taylor Rogers, a spokeswoman for the Trump administration, said, &#8220;The waiver extension provides both certainty and stability for the U.S. and global economies.&#8221;
The American maritime shipping industry “is a total failure,” said associate director at the Cato Institute&#8217;s Herbert A. Stiefel Center for Trade Policy Studies Colin Grabow. “I think we need to move on from it.” 
Grabow is an advocate for permanently repealing the law Trump has temporarily put on ice. He says it has long distorted the market and driven up costs for American consumers: &#8220;U.S.-built ships cost about five times more than those built overseas. They cost about four times more to operate. There aren&#8217;t a lot of them. So this adds up to some very costly shipping.&#8221;
Due to the cost and limited number of vessels (there are only 93 Jones Act-compliant ships in existence), less than <a href="https://balsaresearch.substack.com/p/how-much-will-a-60-day-waiver-of">4%</a> of domestic freight is shipped by water, compared to 67% by truck, 20% by pipeline, and 6% by rail. The 4% via water moves goods from the continental United States to Hawaii, Guam, Alaska, and Puerto Rico. The Grassroot Institute of Hawaii estimates the Jones Act costs the average Hawaii family about <a href="https://www.grassrootinstitute.org/jonesact/">$1,800</a> a year and the state economy $1.2 billion a year.
Despite promises the Jones Act would bolster American ship manufacturing, that hasn&#8217;t come to fruition. In 1960 there were <a href="https://theharvardpoliticalreview.com/jones-act-us-shipping/?utm_source=chatgpt.com">2,926</a> American-built ships, but that number declined 94% to just 188 ships in 2025.
The waiver immediately drew backlash from protectionist industry groups, who argue it undermines the American shipping industry. “We are deeply concerned about this 60-day, broad waiver being abused and unnecessarily displacing American workers and American companies,” the American Maritime Partnership said in a statement.
The group <a href="https://www.waterwaysjournal.net/2026/03/20/trump-enacts-60-day-jones-act-waiver/?utm_source=chatgpt.com">dismissed</a> the Trump administration’s claims that the policy would meaningfully lower gas prices, arguing the impact would be less than one cent per gallon. But critics of the Jones Act say that misses the bigger picture. 
Americans for Free Markets executive director David Ibsen told The Daily Wire he welcomes the change, and the positive impacts should be long-term. &#8220;It&#8217;s telling that whenever there is a national emergency, presidents from both parties move quickly to waive this outdated and unnecessary law,&#8221; he said. &#8220;If it&#8217;s so clear that the direct impact of the Jones Act is higher costs for energy and consumer goods, then there is little reason to keep it. It should be permanently waived or repealed.&#8221;
Former Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama waived the act after Hurricane Katrina (2005) and Hurricane Sandy (2012) to quickly move fuel and supplies to affected areas. Beyond natural disasters, Ibsen suggests that permanently waiving the act could reduce the amount of money flowing to America’s foreign adversaries by making it cheaper to buy American natural gas. 
&#8220;The Jones Act restrictions on shipping between U.S. ports means certain regions of the country are forced to import natural gas from foreign countries, including Russia,&#8221; he argued. &#8220;It&#8217;s absurd and harms both American energy producers and consumers.&#8221;
Permanently repealing the Jones Act, which would require Congress, would conflict with Trump&#8217;s broader protectionist economic project. Instead of restricting foreign competition, it would invite it by allowing cheaper, foreign-built and foreign-crewed ships to operate in domestic routes.

Meta launched a free program on Monday that it&#8217;s calling America’s Workforce Academy, a first-of-its-kind $115 million initiative designed to fast-track Americans into high-demand jobs without requiring a college degree.
Meta&#8217;s pitch is simple: train for free, get paid while you learn, and walk into a guaranteed job on the other side. Meta said that its new school is not a federal program or another handout but a private company spending its own money because it needs the workers for the next wave of a technological revolution. 
&#8220;The AI revolution is bringing change but also historic opportunities. Skilled workers electrified rural America one pole at a time,” said Meta’s President and Vice Chairman Dina Powell McCormick. “They manned the factories that built the arsenal that won World War II. Now a new generation will pour the foundations and lay the fiber that secures American strength in this new age.”
The program will launch as a pilot in four states: Louisiana, Ohio, Indiana, and Texas. America’s Workforce Academy seeks to output welders, electricians, plumbers, and fiber technicians, the workers who will physically build the data centers and infrastructure powering the artificial intelligence boom.
Mike Rowe, the host of the Discovery Channel&#8217;s &#8220;Dirty Jobs&#8221; and CEO of a foundation that awards $10 million a year in scholarships to aspiring tradesmen, praised Meta’s new program. 
“Workers are actually paid to learn,&#8221; Rowe said. &#8220;There is zero cost to them, no college debt and a fast certification, with a guaranteed job on the other end. This is an important step in the right direction, and one that I hope other companies will be inspired to take.&#8221; 
Meta said it is partnering with the National Urban League, Associated Builders and Contractors, and CBRE, along with a roster of regional groups including the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the Ohio Chamber of Commerce, and local economic development organizations across each of the pilot regions.
The idea for the academy came after Meta saw huge demand for a similar initiative. LevelUp, Meta’s fiber-installation training program, received 35,000 applications in the seven days after it launched.
As college tuition continues to soar, interest in trade schools has steadily increased. Earning a four-year degree in America costs an average <a href="https://www.sofi.com/learn/content/bachelor-degree-cost/">$153,080</a>, with in-state public schools averaging $108,584 and private nonprofit $234,512. 
Total student loan debt in the United States is now over <a href="https://educationdata.org/student-loan-debt-statistics">$1.8 trillion</a>, and many of the students carrying that debt also worry that the rise of artificial intelligence could eventually make their jobs obsolete. Gen Z&#8217;s outlook on AI is largely negative, with <a href="https://news.gallup.com/poll/708224/gen-adoption-steady-skepticism-climbs.aspx">42%</a> reporting they feel anxious about the technology&#8217;s rapid advancement. 
Meta, while not dismissing the possibility of workforce disruption, is betting that AI will also create a new generation of high-paying skilled trades jobs that cannot be outsourced to algorithms. The company argues that building the infrastructure behind the AI revolution will require millions of workers whose labor remains firmly rooted in the physical world and educated by its new America’s Workforce Academy.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has launched a federal investigation into Atlanta’s Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) after a series of violent incidents, including the fatal stabbing of a 66-year-old grandmother aboard a train. 
The Department of Transportation announced the review this week, citing concerns about rider safety and rising crime on the transit system.
&#8220;Every American should be disturbed by the horrific crimes we have seen on MARTA in the last month,&#8221; Duffy said. &#8220;No one should be forced to fear for their safety simply because they choose to ride public transit.&#8221;
The investigation was triggered after the May killing of Margaret Swan, who was <a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-ndga/pr/decatur-man-faces-federal-charges-following-fatal-attack-atlantas-marta-rail-system">fatally stabbed</a> while riding a MARTA train. 
According to authorities, surveillance video showed 25-five-year-old John Elijah Matthews approach Swan without provocation before stabbing her repeatedly as she attempted to defend herself. Swan died at the scene.
The attack came less than a week after another stabbing at a MARTA station, where a 40-year-old man was injured.
Duffy&#8217;s Transportation Department has given MARTA 15 days to submit detailed plans to combat fare evasion, its 2026 and 2027 security budgets, and records of all safety-related funding received from the Department of Homeland Security for its review and analysis. 
Duffy said the administration has already pushed transit agencies in other major cities to strengthen security measures.

Astronauts aboard the International Space Station were ordered Friday to shelter inside a docked SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft after a persistent air leak in the Russian section of the orbiting laboratory worsened.  
NASA mission control issued the order at approximately 9:04 a.m. Eastern as Russian cosmonauts worked to repair the leak. Reuters reports a senior NASA official <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/science/2026/jun/05/international-space-station-astronauts-under-evacuation-orders" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> the leak rate had increased from roughly one pound of air per day to two pounds per day. 
Five of the station&#8217;s seven crew members temporarily took refuge inside the SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft while two Russian cosmonauts remained in the affected area to <a href="https://www.yahoo.com/news/science/articles/iss-astronauts-had-shelter-place-154134808.html">carry out</a> repairs. 
American astronauts Jessica Meir, Jack Hathaway, and Chris Williams, French astronaut Sophie Adenot, and Russian cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev took shelter inside the Dragon capsule.  Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergey Kud-Sverchkov and Sergey Mikayev remained aboard the station to address the leak. 
NASA and Russia&#8217;s space agency, Roscosmos, have reportedly spent months investigating a series of recurring air leaks in a Russian section of the International Space Station.
The latest leak is believed to be associated with the Zvezda service module, a critical Russian-built component that includes living quarters, life-support systems, communications, and propulsion functions. 
NASA spokesperson Bethany Stevens said the agency acted out of caution.
“Out of an abundance of caution, Nasa has directed all four of the agency’s SpaceX Crew-12 members and Nasa astronaut Chris Williams to assume an elevated safety posture in the Dragon spacecraft while the repair is under way,” said Stevens. 
Officials later reported that one leak had been while crews continued work on a second. 
After approximately two hours inside teh Dragon spacecraft, NASA instructed the crew to return to normal operations aboard the station.
“Roscosmos has paused Friday’s structural repair efforts inside the Zvezda service module transfer tunnel, known as PrK, as more measurements and data is assessed,” Stevens said.
“Given this development, NASA has instructed the crew members inside the Dragon spacecraft to end the safe haven procedures and return to planned operations aboard the International <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/science/space">Space</a> Station. We look forward to working with Roscosmos on a collaborative approach to address the leaks.”
The International Space Station, which is about the size of a football field, serves as a permanent laboratory in space. It is a joint effort between the United States, Russia, Europe, Japan, and Canada. 
While small air leaks are not uncommon aboard aging spacecraft, officials have said the recurring leaks remain a concern.

A California fraudster used a carbon-offset program to cover up a multi-year scheme that resulted in at least $248 million in losses to investors and lenders. 
Joseph Sanberg was <a href="https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/aspiration-partners-co-founder-sentenced-prison-248m-scheme-defraud-investors-and-lenders">sentenced</a> on Monday to 14 years in prison after pleading guilty to fraud-related charges connected to the company’s sustainability business. 
Aspiration originally operated as a financial technology company but later expanded into environmental services, including tree-planting and carbon-offset programs that turned out to be fraudulent. Theoretically, businesses could purchase these services to help offset their carbon emissions, but court documents say the intention to actually purchase those services was never there. 
Sanberg aligned himself with the Democratic Party in California, personally donating $11 million to back a ballot initiative to raise the state&#8217;s minimum wage to $18 an hour, The Daily Wire previously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/california-anti-poverty-activist-and-dem-mega-donor-pleads-guilty-to-massive-carbon-credit-scam">reported</a>. Ultimately, it would be California&#8217;s clean energy policies that would allow Sanberg to turn his company into a multi-million dollar fraud scheme.
He labeled himself as an &#8220;anti-poverty activist.&#8221; Bill Essayli, first assistant U.S. attorney of the Central District of California, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/california-anti-poverty-activist-and-dem-mega-donor-pleads-guilty-to-massive-carbon-credit-scam">said</a>, &#8220;This so-called ‘anti-poverty’ activist has admitted to being nothing more than a self-serving fraudster, by seeking to enrich himself by defrauding lenders and investors out of hundreds of millions of dollars.&#8221;
Prosecutors allege Sanberg’s “friends and associates” submitted letters of intent from various companies and individuals. Sanberg would then book the letters of intent as revenue, inflating Aspiration’s revenue and profits, which he would in turn use to advertise to investors and obtain millions in new Aspiration investments.
In some cases, Sanberg “went so far as to provide the money to his &#8216;customers&#8217; which they would then send to Aspiration.”
Court filings in separate litigation have also alleged that several entities connected to Sanberg&#8217;s associate, Kfir Gavrieli, signed agreements to purchase large amounts of sustainability services. Those entities allegedly included Gavrieli&#8217;s footwear company, a family-owned business, a synagogue, and other individuals or organizations. 
Employees raised concerns when the revenue suggested in the letters of intent was not collected. KPMG, one of the country&#8217;s largest auditing firms, resigned as Aspiration&#8217;s auditor in 2022, citing revenue transactions with characteristics of fraud. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) later <a href="https://www.sec.gov/files/litigation/complaints/2025/comp26382.pdf">alleged</a> that revenue tied to the letters of intent accounted for roughly $44 million of Aspiration&#8217;s $100.6 million in reported 2021 revenue. The SEC says that, as a result, Sanberg was able to raise more than $300 million from investors based on the false appearance of Aspiration as a booming sustainability business. 
Investigators were struck not only by the size of the alleged purchases, but by who was making them. Having Gavrieli as a customer raised eyebrows because it included organizations and individuals that appeared to have little need for large-scale carbon-offset purchases. 
A footwear company, typically, would not be required by California law to buy millions of trees or large volumes of carbon offsets, which caused the government to examine whether these were genuine commercial purchases. Typical participants of California’s carbon-offset program include oil refineries, industrial facilities, and natural gas suppliers. 
While Sanberg has already pleaded guilty in the Aspiration fraud case, allegations involving Gavrieli remain the subject of ongoing civil litigation in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Los Angeles. Court filings submitted by Dikla Gavrieli, Kfir&#8217;s sister and legal adversary, allege that Gavrieli and several entities connected to him participated in a scheme that helped create the appearance of strong demand for Aspiration&#8217;s tree-planting and sustainability services. Gavrieli has not been criminally charged in connection with the Aspiration fraud, and the allegations against him have not yet been proven in court.

Rep. Linda Sánchez (D-CA) <a href="http://pic.twitter.com/vCUNZadS5y">accused</a> Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent&#8217;s department of being “the most corrupt in American history” during a heated congressional hearing on Wednesday, then rattled off complaints outside the Treasury’s jurisdiction.
“Inflation is now rising faster than hourly wages, gas prices are at an all-time high with the war in Iran, the cost of groceries has risen 3.2% over the past two years, and prices on most goods have gone up because of Trump’s tariffs,&#8221; Sánchez said. &#8220;So I don’t see how you can call that anything other than a failure of the most corrupt Treasury Department in history.” 
Bessent rejected the characterization, saying she was “short on facts and long on hot air.”

Sánchez&#8217;s criticism focused on several issues that are either directed by the White House or involve agencies beyond the Treasury&#8217;s direct policymaking authority.
Sánchez first targeted inflation, which she blamed on Trump’s tariffs and the conflict with Iran. Energy prices have increased since the military operations against Iran began, contributing to broader inflationary pressures. 
Bessent responded sharply: “On inflation, I will not take firefighting advice from an arsonist,” a reference to the inflation surge during the Biden administration.
Sánchez also criticized Trump’s tariff policies, arguing they have increased costs for American consumers. The Trump administration has defended the tariffs as necessary to reset foreign trade relationships and secure industries deemed critical to national security, including pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, steel, and critical minerals. The average household is likely to pay an extra <a href="https://budgetlab.yale.edu/research/state-us-tariffs-march-9-2026">$570</a> due to tariffs in 2026. 
While the Treasury ultimately receives tariff revenue after collection, trade policy is largely driven by the White House, the Commerce Department, and the Office of the United States Trade Representative. 
Finally, Sánchez targeted the IRS, which is part of the Treasury, for failing to audit Trump&#8217;s tax returns. Bessent responded that the Treasury follows existing legal guidance and suggested that disagreements over the matter should be directed to the Department of Justice. The Treasury Department is unable to audit Trump’s tax returns as the DOJ <a href="https://tax.thomsonreuters.com/news/doj-settlement-forever-bars-irs-trump-audits-sparks-backlash/">issued</a> an order that permanently barred the IRS from auditing past tax returns of not only President Donald Trump, but also his family, and related companies.
&#8220;At Treasury, we follow the rule of law,&#8221; Bessent said.

While President Donald Trump lost his sweeping tariffs after the Supreme Court ruled against his use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said on Tuesday that tariffs are far from over.
“What we are doing now is we have investigations ongoing in my office and we are investigating specific unfair trading practices,” Greer <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/video/2026/06/02/u-s-trade-rep-greer-were-investigating-specific-unfair-trade-practices-by-different-countries.html">told</a> CNBC. “You will see over the next few weeks, we will be releasing our findings. We are covering a lot of countries, over 70 countries. If we find unfair trading practices — structural excess capacity, forced labor, things like this — we will put out proposals on how we think we should fix it and that may be proposed tariffs.” 
Trump initially relied on IEEPA because it allowed him to impose broad tariffs quickly without the lengthy investigative processes required under traditional trade laws.
“When the president used his emergency authority he was able to move very quickly to get at this issue, get a lot of leverage, and impose tariffs,” Greer explained.
After the Supreme Court blocked Trump&#8217;s use of IEEPA earlier this year, the administration turned to Section 122 and implemented a temporary 10% tariff on February 24. But unlike the tariffs announced on &#8220;Liberation Day&#8221; in April 2025, Section 122 tariffs are temporary by law and were later struck down by the U.S. Court of International Trade.
With those options curtailed, the administration has shifted its focus to Sections 301 and 232: the two principal trade authorities that require the involvement of Greer and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.
Greer said the results of his Section 301 investigations would be released in the coming weeks, which could introduce new tariffs across the world. Under Section 301, the Office of the United States Trade Representative investigates whether foreign countries are engaging in unfair trade practices, gathers evidence, solicits public comments, and holds hearings before recommending tariffs or other trade restrictions. 
That is the same authority Trump used to impose tariffs on China during his first term. Those tariffs survived legal challenges, but investigations typically take between three and nine months to complete, making them slower and less useful as an immediate negotiating tool than emergency tariff authorities.
Lutnick, like Greer, can also launch investigations, not into unfair trade practices, but into industries that are crucial to national security. Unlike Greer’s Section 301 investigations, which focus on unfair trade practices, Lutnick’s Section 232 investigations examine whether imports threaten industries deemed critical to national security. Those investigations allowed Trump to impose tariffs if the Commerce Department determines that a strategic industry is vulnerable because of import dependence. 
The department began launching Section 232 investigations just weeks after Trump returned to office. Global Trade Alert <a href="https://globaltradealert.org/blog/s232-expanding-when-ieepa-fell">observed</a> that Section 232 “had never stopped expanding” and noted that the administration had launched, relaunched, or expanded roughly 20 actions from the section before the Supreme Court ruled against Trump&#8217;s IEEPA tariffs, suggesting the White House was already building alternative pathways for trade restrictions.
The pathway no longer available is Trump&#8217;s ability to wield tariffs during negotiations.
In January, he threatened to impose tariffs on countries that do business with Iran, citing the country’s repression of protesters, support for proxy terrorist groups, and continued pursuit of nuclear capabilities. In negotiations with China, Trump warned that tariffs would increase if China continued withholding rare earth minerals from the United States. Rare earth minerals are vital for products ranging from household appliances and automobiles to semiconductors for artificial intelligence chips.
The delay in collecting additional tariff revenue could raise budget concerns, with Trump repeatedly claiming that tariffs would help fund the extension of his 2017 tax cuts in the &#8220;Big Beautiful Bill.&#8221;
