Fauci, a longtime director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) who advised both Trump and Biden before retiring at the end of 2022, spoke about the issue on &#8220;The Takeout&#8221; podcast.
CBS News Chief Washington Correspondent Major Garrett asked Fauci if there was anything that would &#8220;medically alarm&#8221; him based on what he saw during the debate.

Fauci, 83, demurred, noting that he thought it would be &#8220;inappropriate&#8221; to say.
Looking at someone on a &#8220;one-shot basis&#8221; leaves too much room for unknowns, including questions about whether Biden had a &#8220;bad cold&#8221; or did he &#8220;take an antihistamine to make him groggy,&#8221; Fauci explained.
&#8220;We don&#8217;t know what went on and I think it would be unfair and inappropriate to try and diagnose something from just a 90-minute clip,&#8221; he added.
Biden, 81, seeks to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/biden-tells-key-ally-hes-considering-dropping-out-of-2024-race-report" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reassure Democrats</a> that he remains capable of serving and running for re-election as he faces growing pressure to step aside and give the party a chance to rally behind a replacement.
During the debate, sources close to Biden began telling news outlets the president had been <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/biden-has-a-cold-narrative-emerges-amid-rough-debate-performance" target="_blank" rel="noopener">suffering from a cold</a>. But White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters Biden &#8220;was not taking <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/press-briefings/2024/07/02/press-briefing-by-press-secretary-karine-jean-pierre-july-2-2024/#:~:text=JEAN%2DPIERRE%3A%20He%20was%20not,he%20get%20a%20neurological%20scan%3F" target="_blank" rel="noopener">any cold medication</a>.&#8221;
Fauci also told Garrett that, based on his interactions with Biden, he has &#8220;no doubt&#8221; that Biden has the vigor and mental capability to continue serving as president.
The interview took place as Fauci promoted his new book, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/06/18/books/review/on-call-anthony-fauci.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">&#8220;On Call,&#8221;</a> which he said describes how Biden asked &#8220;probing&#8221; questions and was &#8220;analytical&#8221; in his discussions with the president.
Fauci said what he witnessed during the debate last week did not reflect his personal experiences with Biden, adding, &#8220;To me, it just looked like a bad night.&#8221;

“The Sopranos” star Drea de Matteo slammed fellow Italians <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/fauci-on-the-view-joins-the-ladies-bashing-trump-calls-detractors-bastards">Dr. Anthony Fauci</a> and <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/robert-de-niro">Robert De Niro</a> on national television on Monday night, saying she’s “mortified by my people.&#8221; 
During the 52-year-old actress’ appearance on “<a href="https://rumble.com/v53k1wr-sopranos-star-claims-hollywood-is-full-of-quiet-trump-voters.html">Jesse Watters Primetime</a>,” Matteo called out Hollywood’s support for President Joe Biden after a video montage played showing several celeb endorsements, and she was asked if there’s a “quiet Trump voter out there in Hollywood.”

“And wow, I wonder how much these actors got paid to endorse Biden at this point,” de Matteo continued. “I’m curious, because that seems — I wonder if De Niro got paid a location’s fee because he had to travel to the courtroom to do that.&#8221;
The host then asked how it would work, suggesting actors possibly couldn’t get just get paid cash and that it might have to be more of a “silent deal like, ‘Oh, we’ll give you this next role or you know we’ll get you a book deal.’ Is it something like that, or an appearance fee?”
“I don’t know. I don’t really maneuver inside that industry. I never have,” the actress replied.  “First of all, ‘Sopranos,’ we were the outcasts, even though we were the critically acclaimed, we still were outcasts.”

De Matteo recently made <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/sopranos-star-says-biden-administration-has-been-used-to-divide-people">headlines</a> when she said that the Biden administration has been used to “divide people” and called the focus on left-wing issues a distraction from more important matters.

Fauci, who previously served as head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID), gained household-name status when he became the face of the White House&#8217;s fight to contain the COVID-19 pandemic — first under Trump and then under President Joe Biden — before he retired from government service.
He joined the hosts of &#8220;The View&#8221; to talk about a new book, and revealed a phrase he had learned while studying Latin that stuck with him when people where attacking him — a phrase he translated with a laugh as, &#8220;don&#8217;t let the bastards wear you down.&#8221;

The conversation then turned to Trump and Fauci&#8217;s tenure in the White House, beginning with Sunny Hostin saying that she blamed Trump for the fact that her in-laws died of COVID.
&#8220;We remember those pandemic briefings,&#8221; Hostin said. &#8220;I remember the injection of bleach perhaps, hydroxychloroquin, dangerous recommendations. You were particularly disturbed, I read, by his refusal to wear a mask.&#8221;
Fauci claimed that a number of Trump&#8217;s allies had believed he was only disagreeing with Trump on COVID policies because he had some &#8220;antipathy&#8221; toward the president — which he denied.

Dr. Anthony Fauci acknowledged on Tuesday that shuttering schools for months during the COVID pandemic was a &#8220;mistake,&#8221; a reversal for the former presidential chief medical advisor who became influential in the nation&#8217;s response to the malady.
Fauci, 83, was one of the lead members of both the Trump and Biden administrations&#8217; White House COVID teams and frequently appeared beside former President Donald Trump at briefings. The immunologist also led the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases during the first two years of the pandemic.
Fauci made the admission <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EqxazNlHp8Q" target="_blank" rel="noopener">during</a> an interview on CBS Mornings, saying that while the initial school closures were the right decision, keeping kids out of the classroom for so long was a mistake.
&#8220;I think what was not a mistake was the actual closure, because when we had a shutdown that 15 day to flatten the curve, we were in a tsunami of cases. Right here in New York, you had freezer trucks in front of Elmhurst Hospital,&#8221; Fauci said.
Fauci said that &#8220;shutting down everything immediately &#8230; even schools was the right thing.&#8221;
&#8220;How long you kept it was the problem because there was a disparity throughout the country,&#8221; he said.
Fauci also defended his own record, saying he urged states and counties to &#8220;close the bars, open the schools, open the schools as quickly and as safely as you possibly can.&#8221;
&#8220;But initially to close it down was correct,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Keeping it for a year was not a good idea.&#8221;
&#8220;So that was a mistake in retrospect? We will not repeat it?&#8221; the CBS anchor asked.
&#8220;Absolutely, yeah,&#8221; Fauci responded.
Previously, Fauci had warned that school shutdowns may be necessary, even ones that would last for months.

In August 2020, Fauci was asked by PBS NewsHour&#8217;s Judy Woodruff whether the country was facing &#8220;many months of virtual learning&#8221; before schools could safely open nationwide.
&#8220;In some places, Judy, that may be the case,&#8221; Fauci responded. &#8220;If you want your schools to open, get your community level down, down to a safe level.&#8221;
Also that month, Fauci said, &#8220;There may be some areas that the level of the virus is so high that it would not be prudent to bring the children back to school.&#8221;
School lockdowns <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/teachers-union-exec-suggests-learning-loss-made-us-all-equal" target="_blank" rel="noopener">caused</a> massive learning loss across the country among K-12 students in public schools.
In 2022, eighth graders had the lowest U.S. history scores on record and among the lowest civics scores, according to the Department of Education. Only about 13% of eighth graders met proficiency <a href="https://www.nationsreportcard.gov/highlights/ushistory/2022/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">standards</a> for U.S. history last year, and only about <a href="https://www.nationsreportcard.gov/highlights/civics/2022/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a fifth</a> of students were proficient or better in civics.

Math and reading scores have also suffered over the pandemic, according to the department. Math scores <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/math-scores-dropped-in-every-state-during-pandemic-report-card-shows-11666584062?mod=article_inline" target="_blank" rel="noopener">plummeted</a> among fourth and eighth graders in almost every state, and reading scores have also <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/when-fourth-graders-cant-read-one-phoenix-school-has-a-new-way-to-fight-pandemic-learning-loss-11633818431?mod=article_inline" target="_blank" rel="noopener">sunk across</a> the country, erasing the last three decades of progress.
Many students returned to classrooms last year reading at the same level as when the pandemic started, putting them two grade levels behind. One study last year <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2023/01/30/health/covid-learning-loss-study-wellness/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">suggested</a> that students lost about 35% of a typical school year’s worth of learning, starting when remote learning began.
In early 2021, a CDC study <a href="https://nypost.com/2021/01/26/stats-show-in-person-classes-dont-spread-covid/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">showed</a> &#8220;little evidence that schools have contributed meaningfully to increased community transmission.&#8221;
However, many schools remained closed for the remainder of that year thanks to teachers unions, which fought against reopening.
Learning loss caused by many months of remote learning spurred parents across the nation to demand schools return to in-person learning, especially after data showed that children were at low risk for serious cases of COVID.
Some parents even <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/meet-the-moms-and-dads-taking-over-school-boards-across-the-country" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ran for school board</a> positions and won, hoping to stop the learning loss in their communities.

After much discussion, the cohosts of ABC&#8217;s &#8220;The View&#8221; have determined that the origin of the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/covid" target="_blank" rel="noopener">COVID-19</a> pandemic &#8220;wasn&#8217;t in this country&#8221; — and Joy Behar even said that she&#8217;d heard somewhere that it might have come from a lab.
In a segment from Tuesday&#8217;s live broadcast — years after most Americans had determined that COVID had most likely leaked from a lab in Wuhan, China — the show&#8217;s cohosts embraced the pandemic&#8217;s foreign origins in an attempt to attack Republicans for continuing to question the roles played by American officials like Dr. Anthony Fauci.
Joy Behar began by complaining about Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), who had objected to referring to Fauci as &#8220;doctor&#8221; during a Monday hearing, saying that she was disrespectful and not very smart.

Former White House medical advisor Anthony Fauci changed his view of COVID vaccines from 2021 to 2024, clips show.
Fauci, the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), was influential in the U.S. response to COVID-19 in the Trump administration and under President Joe Biden. Fauci testified about his role in the U.S. response to the pandemic in front of the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic on Monday.
Daily Wire host Michael Knowles documented how Fauci’s views on the COVID vaccine changed from 2021 to 2024. In a pair of videos posted to X, Knowles documented Fauci’s public remarks in 2021 compared to the former NIAID head’s Monday testimony.
In the first clip, Fauci testifies to the subcommittee that “I don’t believe any vaccine is 100% effective.”
In 2021, Fauci said: “Although you don’t like to see breakthroughs, the fact is, this is one of the encouraging aspects about the efficacy of the vaccine. It will either protect you completely against infection – if you do get infected, the chances are you’re going to be without symptoms. And the chances are very likely that you’ll not be able to transmit it to other people.”

In the second clip, Fauci is first heard explaining to the subcommittee that the COVID vaccine’s efficacy at stopping transmission of the virus is a “complicated issue.”
“In the beginning, the first iteration of the vaccines did have an effect – not 100%, not a high effect – they did prevent infection and subsequently, obviously, transmission,” Fauci says. During the pandemic, the results of the vaccine were more murky, however, according to the former top health official.
“We did not know early on that became evident as the months went by is that the durability of protection against infection, and hence transmission, was relatively limited, whereas the duration of protection against severe disease, hospitalization, and deaths was more prolonged,” he testified.
In 2021, Fauci advocated strongly that the COVID vaccine stopped transmission and encouraged Americans, whether they were vulnerable to the virus or not, to get vaccinated.
“When you get vaccinated, you not only protect your own health [and] that of the family, but also you contribute to the community health by preventing the spread of the virus throughout the community,” Fauci said. “The more people you get vaccinated, the safer the entire community is.”

Fauci testified he believed the CDC based its recommendation on &#8220;studies years ago&#8221; with the suspicion that primary COVID-19 transmission came through droplets. That view was &#8220;incorrect&#8221; as health officials know today that aerosols &#8220;play a role,&#8221; he said.

&#8220;It had little to do with me since I didn&#8217;t make the recommendation and my saying there was no science behind it means there was no clinical trial that proved that,&#8221; Fauci said. &#8220;That&#8217;s just one of the things that got a little distorted in the response to that.&#8221;
Later in the hearing, Rep. Emails <a href="https://oversight.house.gov/release/wenstrup-requests-access-to-dr-faucis-personal-email-and-cellphone-investigates-secret-back-channel/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">show</a> Dr. David Morens, Fauci&#8217;s former senior adviser, discussed a &#8220;&#8216;secret&#8217; back channel&#8221; and suggested that Fauci used a private account to get around Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests.
Morens also <a href="https://oversight.house.gov/release/wenstrup-requests-access-to-dr-faucis-personal-email-and-cellphone-investigates-secret-back-channel/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">testified</a> to the subcommittee last month that he &#8220;may have&#8221; sent information related to COVID-19 to Fauci&#8217;s personal email account.

&#8220;It might have been because &#8230; one of his functions is to write chapters — medical, scientific chapters — with me,&#8221; Fauci said. &#8220;So it is conceivable that I communicated with him on my private email when we were writing a chapter. And that was not official business.&#8221;
The Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic has expressed concern that Fauci not only knew about the activity Morens described in emails and testimony but also participated in the same behavior.
Fauci distanced himself from Morens, saying in his <a href="https://oversight.house.gov/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/Fauci-Testimony.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">opening statement</a> that he &#8220;knew nothing&#8221; of his former aide using a personal email account or deleting emails to avoid FOIA requests, and he denied the use of a back channel at NIAID.
Rep. Brad Wenstrup (R-OH), chairman of the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic, made a request to Fauci last week for communications from Fauci&#8217;s personal email accounts and cell phone records by June 12.

Responsive documents would relate to the Wuhan Institute of Virology, EcoHealth Alliance, Inc., the origins of COVID-19, or congressional oversight of these issues between January 1, 2020, and the present.
In recent weeks, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/hhs-moves-to-defund-ecohealth-alliance-says-action-needed-to-protect-the-public-interest" target="_blank" rel="noopener">cut off</a> EcoHealth Alliance and its <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/hhs-blocks-prez-of-group-tied-to-wuhan-lab-from-receiving-federal-funds" target="_blank" rel="noopener">president</a>, Peter Daszak, from taxpayer funds amid scrutiny of the group&#8217;s support of coronavirus research in China that may have resulted in a lab leak.
Daszak was a recipient of the emails in which Morens spoke about bypassing the FOIA process and covert back channel.
Fauci acknowledged that he may have spoken about Daszak with Morens because EcoHealth was a grantee, but pushed back on the suggestion that he sought to protect the virus research group and insisted that he did not use a private email to message Daszak.

The 6-foot social distancing guideline pushed by public health officials during the COVID-19 pandemic apparently lacked any sound basis in science, according to the testimony of former chief medical advisor to the president Anthony Fauci.
Fauci, the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), advised former president Donald Trump and current President Joe Biden on the U.S. response to COVID-19, carrying significant influence over infectious disease policy. Republicans have grown increasingly <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/marco-rubio-accuses-dr-fauci-of-lying-about-masks-distorting-herd-immunity-estimates" target="_blank" rel="noopener">critical</a> of Fauci for his handling of the pandemic, accusing him of misleading the American people over the risks of COVID-19 and other issues.
Fauci appeared on Capitol Hill in January to testify behind closed doors to members of the select subcommittee on the COVID-19 pandemic. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability, which oversees the subcommittee’s work, <a href="https://oversight.house.gov/release/covid-select-subcommittee-releases-dr-faucis-transcript-highlights-key-takeaways-in-new-memo/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">released</a> transcripts of Fauci’s testimony on Friday. Fauci is expected to return to Capitol Hill on Monday to testify publicly in front of Congress.
One line of questioning from the Republican counsel focused on the six-foot social distancing standard. Fauci was asked where the standard – which was pushed by federal, state, and local officials to slow the spread of COVID-19 – originated. The former federal health official suggested that the standard was arbitrary without a hard basis in data.
“You know, I don’t recall. It sort of just appeared,” Fauci said in response to the guideline’s origins. “I don’t recall, like, a discussion of whether it should be 5 or 6 or whatever.”

In response to a question if Fauci had seen any studies supporting the six-foot standard, Fauci responded in the negative.
“I was not aware of studies that in fact, that would be a very difficult study to do,” Fauci said.
Also in his testimony, the GOP counsel <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/fauci-cant-name-one-study-to-support-child-masking-before-pandemic" target="_blank" rel="noopener">asked</a> Fauci if he had seen evidence to support the masking of children while such policies were being implemented across the U.S. and encouraged by health officials.
“You know, I might have, Mitch, but I don’t recall specifically that I did. I might have,” Fauci responded.
The U.S. response to COVID-19 has grown increasingly controversial, especially as it related to children and education. The length of school closures seemed to correlate with subsequent drops in test scores, according to data analyzed by <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/18/upshot/pandemic-school-closures-data.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The New York Times</a> earlier this year.
“There’s fairly good consensus that, in general, as a society, we probably kept kids out of school longer than we should have,” pediatric disease specialist Sean O’Leary told the Times.

During the closed-door testimony in January, Republicans asked Fauci about the scientific support for masking children before masking policies were adopted widely during the pandemic. Fauci, though he hedged his answer, failed to provide a specific example of a study he viewed supporting child masking. He suggested that he may not have looked at any data at all.
“Do you recall reviewing any studies or data supporting masking for children?” GOP counsel asked, according to the <a href="https://oversight.house.gov/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Fauci-Part-2-Transcript.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">transcript</a>.
Fauci responded, “You know, I might have, Mitch, but I don’t recall specifically that I did. I might have.”

The counsel then pointed to studies and data from the pandemic that suggest masking harmed child development and education.
“There’s been a lot of studies that have come out since the pandemic started, but specifically on this there have been significant on, kind of like the learning loss and speech and development issues that have been associated with particularly young children wearing masks while they’re growing up. They can’t see their teacher talk and can’t learn how to form words. Have you followed any of those studies?” the counsel asked.
“No,” Fauci answered. He went on to say he believes the scientific data on child masking is still mixed.
“I believe that there are a lot of conflicting studies too, that there are those that say, yes, there is an impact, and there are those that say there’s not. I still think that’s up in the air,” he said. “I mean, I&#8217;m very sensitive to children. I have children and I have grandchildren. So, I don&#8217;t want to have anything that would do to harm them [sic]. But I think that there was a conflicting discussion about the negative impact on speech and formation of the bones of the face, and that I think was debunked pretty easily.”
