<p>A 30-year-old pregnant mother from Indiana was found dead in Mexico more than three months after she and her children were reported missing.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Makala Pendley was found dead earlier this week in a village in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas, according to local officials. Pendley was six months pregnant when she disappeared with her seven children in February.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Her sister, Mauricia Lambert, said in a </span><a href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/makala-pendley"><span style="font-weight: 400;">GoFundMe</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> that Pendley was found “stabbed, raped, sodomized, naked, with her head bashed in.” Mexican authorities said Pendley died from traumatic brain injury caused by blunt-force trauma, according to local reports.</span></p>
<p>After identifying Pendley&#8217;s body, authorities began searching for her children, who were believed to have been with her, and for her partner, Joseph Jude Butler Jr., whom Mexican officials identified as a suspect in the case.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The children were later found in “good health” in the San Cristóbal de las Casas neighborhood, where they were immediately placed under government protection. Butler was arrested shortly after, as <a href="https://www.indystar.com/story/news/crime/2026/06/11/makala-pendley-chiapas-state-prosecutor-jorge-luis-llaven-abarca-joseph-jude-butler-jr-arrest/90509380007/">announced</a> by Chiapas State Prosecutor Jorge Luis Llaven Abarca during a Facebook Live broadcast on Monday.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“In the coming hours, his criminal responsibility will be determined, and he may be brought before justice,” Llaven Abarca stated. “We will seek the maximum sentence of 100 years for this perpetrator of femicide.”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Just a few days prior, Llaven Abarca said authorities had found the body of a deceased woman in the Elambó Bajo area of Zinacantán.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Based on the time of death, she had been at the location where she was found for between 8 and 12 hours,” he said on the broadcast just days before the identification of the body.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Pendley and her children were reported missing on February 25 after the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children issued an alert. They were believed to have left Indianapolis and traveled to Mexico.</span></p>
<p>Pendley was found alive in Mexico last month after her sister told<span style="font-weight: 400;"> </span><a href="https://fox59.com/indiana-news/pregnant-indy-mom-found-murdered-in-mexico-her-missing-kids-found-safe/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">FOX59</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> that she had fled there because she feared “her children would be taken away from her.” Authorities took custody of her children at the time before later releasing them back to Pendley.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">During Monday&#8217;s broadcast, Mexican authorities said American officials informed them that Butler has a history of criminal activity. Llaven Abarca said Butler had an active warrant in Alaska and had previously been detained in the United States in connection with allegations including assault, robbery, fraud, illegal weapons possession, intimidation, and rape.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Butler and Pendley had been in an on-and-off “toxic relationship” since Pendley was 16, according to the Indianapolis Star. This includes a legal incident in August 2025 where Pendley claimed she was assaulted by Butler in Yucatan, Mexico.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The United States is imposing strict travel restrictions on Iran&#8217;s national soccer team as the 2026 World Cup begins amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran.</span></p>
<p>Iran&#8217;s national team, known as Team Melli, is scheduled to play all three of its matches in the United States, beginning with a June 15 match against New Zealand at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.</p>
<p>The team had initially planned to train in Tucson, Arizona, but FIFA approved a request to move Iran&#8217;s base camp to Tijuana, Mexico, following the U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran earlier this year and increasing security concerns surrounding the tournament.</p>
<p>President Donald Trump <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald-trump/trump-warns-iranian-world-cup-team-away-us-life-safety-rcna263197">warned</a> in March that although Iran was welcome to compete in the World Cup, he did not believe it was &#8220;appropriate&#8221; for the team to travel to the United States &#8220;for their own life and safety.&#8221;</p>
<p>The visa process has also drawn scrutiny after U.S. officials said some members of Iran&#8217;s delegation had ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which the United States designates as a terrorist organization.</p>
<p>Secretary of State Marco Rubio addressed the issue during a House Appropriations subcommittee hearing, saying the administration had no objection to Iranian athletes entering the country.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“We have no problems with the athletes, as we stated earlier, or the support staff,” Rubio <a href="https://global.espn.com/football/story/_/id/49017941/iran-players-say-us-visa-policies-create-world-cup-tension">stated</a>. “But what we’re not going to allow them is for them to embed in their delegation a bunch of people that we know have nothing to do with athletics and have ties to the IRGC or things of that nature.”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) later said the visas required for Iran to compete have been issued, while making clear that the administration would not approve every member of the delegation. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“The visas necessary for Iran to compete in the World Cup, including for athletes and necessary support staff, have been issued,” the DHS commented. “We will not allow the Iranian team to abuse this system to sneak terrorists into the United States under false pretenses.”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Iranian players and officials have criticized the restrictions, arguing that visa delays and travel limits have disrupted the team&#8217;s preparation for the tournament.</span></p>
<p>Iranian officials also claimed the team would be forced to enter and leave the United States on the same day as each match, but DHS disputed that account.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“These statements are untrue,” the DHS spokesperson explained in a </span><a href="https://www.straitstimes.com/sport/football/iranian-world-cup-players-will-be-able-to-enter-us-the-day-before-matches-dhs-says"><span style="font-weight: 400;">statement</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. “Thanks to the generosity of President Trump, the Iranian team will be able to arrive the day before their matches.”</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The hearing followed a Monday <a href="https://judiciary.house.gov/media/press-releases/new-report-sports-broadcasting-act-special-interest-antitrust-exemption-gone">press release</a> from the House Judiciary Committee, accusing the NFL of veering away from the original intent of the law created 65 years ago. </span>Rep. Scott Fitzgerald (R-WI), chair of the House Judiciary Committee’s antitrust subcommittee, voiced his concerns.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Sixty five years later, however, it is fair for this body to ask whether the professional sports leagues have kept up their end of the bargain,” Fitzgerald stated. “In my opinion, they have not, and sports fans are paying the price because of it.”</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“The Sports Broadcasting Act was designed to facilitate the distribution of games through free over-the-air television,” he explained. “It was not intended to provide a perpetual shield for leagues to coordinate the sale of media rights across every new technology and distribution platform that emerges.”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The question that arises is whether or not fans really benefit from the SBA, given how watching sports has drastically changed over the years. Congress will now have to make a decision on whether they are going to revise the antitrust exemption, leave it as is, or ban it altogether.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The fighter plane segment of the Future Combat Air System (FCAS) project created in 2017 dedicated $116 billion to build sixth-generation jets to use in battle by 2040. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz declared that the project was no longer feasible after months of stalemate between Dassault Aviation and Airbus, France&#8217;s and Germany’s industry partners respectively.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“The German authorities considered that it was not possible to put further pressure on the companies concerned,” Macron’s office, the Élysée Palace, explained in a statement.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The proposed fighter planes were supposed to combine advanced sensors, artificial intelligence, enhanced stealth technology, and other upgrades to use them for future air combat.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Signs of the potential flaming out were seen earlier this year. European Union Defense Commissioner Andrius Kubilius admitted that the plan was a “failure” and that Europe has struggled in &#8220;multinational defense projects.&#8221;</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The FCAS project failure raises multiple questions about the integrity of Europe’s national defense. Leaders in Europe believed the plan was a test if they could develop advanced technology as they promised without the help of the United States. France and Germany have recently struggled with a next-generation tank project with the Main Ground Combat System (MGCS) as well.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It also underlined potential disagreements between the two governments, which have both already expressed their alternative options after the project fell through.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Merz has publicly inquired if the sixth-generation planes will even be necessary, and that their requirements for the planes were not similar to those of France’s. France, on the other hand, is actively pursuing similar blueprints.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“The French authorities will continue to encourage our companies and armed forces to explore ways and means of pursuing ambitious European projects that are consistent with our national security interests,” the Élysée Palace added in its official statement.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">While Berlin is looking into possible substitutes following the collapse, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius explained that if FCAS were to be thought of today, it simply wouldn’t happen.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“With what we know today, we would no longer launch this project in the way it was originally set up,” Pistorius told officials.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400">An Air Canada captain was arrested after being accused of spending more than 16 years flying commercial aircraft without the certification required for the position, Canadian police announced Tuesday. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">Geoffrey Wall, 59, is accused of serving as an airline captain from 2009 through 2025 despite never obtaining the proper pilot license required for the position, according to Peel Regional Police.</span></p>
<p>Authorities launched an investigation called &#8220;Project Icarus&#8221; in January following Wall&#8217;s retirement late last year.</p>
<p>According to investigators, Wall was promoted to captain in 2009 after spending 11 years as a commercial pilot. The promotion required an airline transport pilot license, which <a href="https://www.peelpolice.ca/news-feed/posts/project-icarus-former-air-canada-captain-arrested-for-allegedly-flying-over-900-flights-without-licence-pr260027841/">police say</a> he never possessed.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">Over that period, Wall operated more than 900 domestic and international flights and earned more than $2.1 million. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">Deputy Police Chief Nick Milinovich said Wall had been “flying for years misrepresenting himself and his credentials” while working as a captain for Air Canada.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">“This is very similar to a doctor that is licensed to practice family medicine but is doing brain surgery in their office,” Milinovich told reporters, describing how Wall was able to avoid detection for so long.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">On June 1, Wall was arrested and charged with fraud over $5,000, two counts of uttering forged documents, three counts of possession of counterfeit mark, and public mischief.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">“This case is deeply concerning and strikes at the heart of public trust and safety, as the accused is alleged to have put hundreds of thousands of passengers at risk across more than 900 domestic and international flights,” said Chief Nishan Duraiappah of Peel Regional Police.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">Air Canada emphasized that “safety was not compromised” in a statement released Monday. The airline said Wall was fully trained as a pilot but lacked the certification required to serve as a captain. </span></p>

<p>The NYPD estimated that roughly 7,000 people gathered near Bryant Park for the watch party Monday night.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In one video, New Yorkers appeared to be ganging up on a man wearing a San Antonio jersey as he was simply walking down the street. The Spurs fan was forced to fend off numerous attackers.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Some Knicks fans were seen clapping and cheering on other individuals who were attacking and ripping Spurs jerseys off bystanders. </span>According to the NYPD, the crowd took over 42nd Street, blocked traffic, and ignored repeated police orders to disperse.</p>
<p>“People climbed on top of scaffolding, light poles, police cars, and NYPD trucks, causing significant damage. The crowd was throwing glass objects at each other and police officers, and they ripped bus signs and trees out of the ground to throw them,” the NYPD said in a statement.</p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Police were notably absent in several videos, but authorities finally arrived and arrested some of the troublemakers after the fights. Twenty-one </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">people were <a href="https://ny1.com/nyc/manhattan/news/2026/06/09/21-taken-into-custody-outside-bryant-park-knicks-watch-party--nypd-says">reportedly</a> taken into custody following the events.</span></p>
<p>Of the 21 people police took into custody, officers arrested and charged eight and released 13 with criminal court summonses. Police charged two people with assault on a police officer and one with attempted assault on an officer. Five NYPD officers suffered injuries during the disorder, according to a statement from the department.</p>
<p>Neither the NYPD nor Mayor Zohran Mamdani has said how the city will prevent similar disorder at future games. Game 4 takes place Wednesday night in New York City.</p>

<p>The head of New York’s casino union is living like a high roller while his lieutenants allegedly raked in luxury goods.</p>
<p>New York Hotel Gaming and Trades Council President Rich Maroko made $923,053 in 2024, according to publicly available financial disclosures reviewed by the <a href="https://richierichmaroko.com/meet-richie-rich-maroko/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Center For Union Facts. </a>That near-million-dollar salary includes $313,386 in base salary, $380,108 things like retirement benefits, and $229,559 from other organizations.</p>
<p>Under Maroko’s leadership, union higher ups have been accused of rampant corruption. A group of New York City hotel owners last month retained a private investigator to probe a whistleblower’s claim that the union was shot through with “corruption, misconduct and malfeasance.”</p>
<p>“The whistleblower alleges union officials received free gifts of liquor, gourmet food and electronics including an Xbox and PlayStation from hotel-industry executives,” Crain’s New York Business <a href="https://www.crainsnewyork.com/real-estate/commercial/cny-hotel-owners-investigate-whistblower-claims-20260521/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. “The letter further alleges that union officials defrauded UNITE HERE Local 6, a Midtown-based chapter of the union, out of nearly $3 million by paying below-market rent for Eighth Avenue office space it owned.”</p>
<p>The New York Hotel Gaming and Trades Council is the latest union to come under fire for profligate spending and alleged corruption. In 2024, the International Longshoremen’s Association was slammed for a strike that shut down ports up and down the East Coast. Association president Harold Daggett emerged as a villain in that saga, thanks to his million-dollar salary, luxury yacht, contributions to Democrats, and alleged mafia ties, as The Daily Wire <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/dock-workers-sound-off-as-they-hit-picket-lines-in-massive-strike?author=Mairead+Elordi&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=undefined&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=Dock+Workers+Sound+Off+As+They+Hit+Picket+Lines+In+Massive+Strike" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> at the time.</p>
<p>The Center For Union Facts is calling attention to Maroko’s pay raise as unions across the country use the World Cup to hike labor costs. That includes hotel workers in <a href="https://www.seattletimes.com/business/local-business/seattle-hotel-workers-authorize-strike-ahead-of-the-fifa-world-cup/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Seattle</a> and <a href="https://peoplesworld.org/article/union-uses-world-cup-as-leverage-vs-ice-and-for-strike-votes/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Philadelphia</a>, as well as stadium workers in <a href="https://www.npr.org/2026/06/08/nx-s1-5849249/sofi-stadium-workers-could-go-on-strike-ahead-of-first-world-cup-match-in-los-angeles" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Los Angeles.</a></p>

<p>“Union members deserve transparency about the lucrative compensation package they’re being asked to fund.”</p>
<p>The union recently enjoyed some positive press following its announcement of a massive new pay package for members. But even with that jump, members still fall far behind the brass. Workers made $38.87 per hour on average in 2024, about 570% less than Maroko.</p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">According to a recent study by the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), the real cause of the declining birth rate may be sitting in our pockets — the iPhone.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Detailed in the research paper, Caitlin K. Myers and Ezekiel Hooper investigated the connection between the release of the smartphone in 2007 and the overall decrease in fertility that started the same year.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“The U.S. general fertility rate has fallen by 22% since 2007, a sustained decline not readily explained by economic conditions, contraceptive use, housing or childcare costs, or other commonly cited factors,” Myers and Hooper </span><a href="https://www.nber.org/papers/w35310"><span style="font-weight: 400;">wrote</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. “We assess the potential role of a different shock: the diffusion of the smartphone.”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The first rollout of the modern smartphone was initially offered only through AT&amp;T. This allowed them to “identify its effect from variation” based on the company’s coverage. When compared, the fertility decline was observed across all age groups from June 2007 to February 2011.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Studies imply that access to the iPhone reduced births by 4.5–8.0% at ages 15–19 and 3.2–6.6% at ages 20–24, with statistically significant but smaller declines among older cohorts,” the two stated in the paper.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">When performing the same analysis with pre-2011 Sprint and Verizon coverage, the numbers had no correlation, strengthening the argument of the iPhone acting as a new form of birth control. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Myers and Hooper credit several factors within phone usage for the major impact on the birth rate decrease.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Overall, the diffusion of the iPhone explains 33–52% of the decline in the general fertility rate among women aged 15–44,” Myers and Hooper concluded in the paper. “National-survey evidence on time use and sexual behavior is consistent with the iPhone reducing in-person interactions, increasing pornography use, and reducing sexual frequency.”</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Despite breaking numerous NCAA rules regarding gambling as an athlete, a Texas state court on Monday granted Texas Tech University quarterback Brendan Sorsby a temporary injunction, allowing him to play college football in the 2026-2027 season.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Retired Lubbock County Judge Ken Curry made the decision on Sorsby after he was assigned the case when the current judge recused himself. Curry&#8217;s decision comes after the NCAA declared him permanently ineligible in May. The NCAA took action on Sorsby after he admitted to wagering over $90,000 on professional and collegiate athletic events over four years following an investigation in March shortly after he transferred to Texas Tech from the University of Cincinnati. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Judge Curry stated that Sorsby’s attorneys <a href="https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/49000177/brendan-sorsby-granted-injunction-vs-ncaa-eligible-play-2026">explained</a> he would suffer “probable, imminent, and irreparable injury” if he could not suit up for the Red Raiders in 2026, granting him an injunction just three days after the NCAA denied Texas Tech’s appeal.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Curry’s ruling shocked many around the country. ESPN&#8217;s College Football senior writer Pete Thamel discussed the nationwide consensus of the news.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Reaction from lawyer Tom Mars, a veteran of NCAA cases: ‘In 40 years as a lawyer, I&#8217;ve never been as shocked and surprised by a court ruling.’ That sums the reaction on the college sports landscape today,” Thamel wrote on </span><a href="https://x.com/petethamel/status/2064001793659433028?s=46"><span style="font-weight: 400;">X</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">After the ruling, the NCAA defended its decision to punish Sorsby and warned about &#8220;far-reaching&#8221; ramifications from the court&#8217;s decision. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“The NCAA strongly disagrees with the court’s ruling in Sorsby’s case and is deeply concerned about the damaging, far-reaching and broadly destabilizing ramifications of this outcome — which undermines and corrupts the integrity of sports,” the NCAA <a href="https://x.com/petethamel/status/2063993834862706831?s=46">stated</a>.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">NCAA President Charlie Baker also took to X to express his disappointment in Curry’s decision, even calling for the </span><a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/bipartisan-bill-seeks-to-restore-order-to-college-sports"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Protect College Sports Act</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> to be passed and signed into law sooner rather than later.</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br />

However, the ruling states that the NCAA cannot prevent Sorsby from “practicing, playing or otherwise participating on Texas Tech’s football team for the 2026 season.” If appealed, the four justices in the Texas Seventh Court of Appeals, who are all Texas Tech University law graduates, would be making the decision on their alma mater’s quarterback situation.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Thanks to the ruling, what has long been a major offense in college athletics has been downgraded to a slap on the wrist, as Sorsby will only be suspended for the first two games of Texas Tech’s 2026-2027 season.</span></p>

The cheapest get-in price on secondary and primary ticket marketplaces is currently floating around $5,000 on SeatGeek and Ticketmaster, while some courtside seats have gone for over $100,000. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A combination of ending one of the NBA’s longest championship droughts, loyalty of the fans, and attendance of a handful of celebrities, along with President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, is to blame for the high prices. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Along with Hart, New York native and Knicks guard Jose Alvarado admitted he won’t be providing tickets for his friends after he already secured seats for his wife, children, brother, and parents.</span></p>
