Following an all-time underdog World Cup performance, Cape Verde’s Vozinha has become a household name overnight. Now, the United States is trying to make the goalkeeper feel more at home by bringing his mother to the country to watch him play.
Josimar José Évora Dias, who simply goes by Vozinha, shocked the world Monday afternoon with a clean sheet against the global soccer powerhouse Spain. In a game where many expected the tournament-favorite Spanish national team to demolish Cape Verde, the 40-year-old had seven saves in the all-time performance as Cape Verde tied Spain 0-0. 
Immediately after the game, an emotional Vozinha brought up how his mother could not watch his rise into superstardom in person.
“My mom, she didn’t manage to be here because of the visa,” Vozinha <a href="https://www.youtube.com/shorts/IUOWBNJoc2E">told reporters</a>. “The money you had to pay for the visa, we didn’t manage [to get it] on time, and I would like [her] to be here.”
The goalkeeper was referring to the bond, which can be up to $15,000, that Cape Verde and 49 other countries’ citizens are required to pay due to high rates of overstaying their visas once they acquire it. But it appears that neither Vozinha nor his mother realized the Trump administration waived the bond for &#8220;athletes and team members — including coaches, persons performing a necessary support role, and immediate relatives,&#8221; which is clearly <a href="https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/News/visas-news/countries-subject-to-visa-bonds.html">stated on the U.S. State Department&#8217;s travel web page</a>. The State Department said it has no record of Vozinha’s mother, Ana Candida Évora, applying for the visa. 
As of Wednesday morning, however, it seems like Évora will be able to see her son put on for his country.
House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) put out a press release on Wednesday, explaining how he will be actively working with the State Department to bring together mother and son.
“No mother should miss the chance to see her child make history. Upon learning of this development, I spoke with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and asked the State Department to do everything in their power to ensure that his mother can attend Cabo Verde’s next match,” Jeffries <a href="https://jeffries.house.gov/2026/06/17/leader-jeffries-statement-on-cabo-verde-goalkeepers-mother-attending-next-world-cup-match/">stated</a>. 
“It is a privilege to announce that Vozinha’s mom will be able to secure a visa in time to attend their game this Sunday against Uruguay,&#8221; he added. &#8220;All fees have been waived consistent with official policy. Travel arrangements are now being made for mother and son to reunite in Miami.”
Vozinha’s World Cup story will not soon be forgotten by any of the 530,000 Cape Verdeans. He now looks to turn the performance into an unthinkable run with his mother in the crowd as Cape Verde takes on Uruguay on Sunday.

Tuesday’s World Cup action may have provided the best day of the young tournament. While all the favorites dominated in expected fashion, the stars of the sport put on brilliant performances, with one even altering the history books.
France’s Kylian Mbappé, Norway’s Erling Haaland, and Argentina’s Lionel Messi all powered their country to strong victories in their opening matches with all scoring at least two goals apiece. However, the legendary Messi one-upped both of the young superstars with a hat trick that lifted his legacy to yet another level.
The moment of the day, and of the tournament so far, came in the reigning World Cup champion Argentina’s first game. In its quest to be the third team ever to win back-to-back tournaments, the first since Brazil in 1958 and 1962, Argentina, led by Messi, put on a show.
One of the greatest players in the history of the sport scored all three goals for Argentina in its 3-0 win over Algeria. Messi, who turns 39 next week, earned his first career World Cup hat trick 20 years after his first-ever World Cup goal. This catapulted him into a tie for first in total goals in World Cup history with Germany’s Miroslav Klose, a record Messi will likely break later in the tournament.

In the first game on Tuesday, France beat Senegal 3-1. After a surprisingly scoreless first half, the French phenom Mbappé scored the first goal of the match during the 66th minute, putting him at fourth all-time in World Cup goals. At the time, the goal tied him with Messi, who has played in three more tournaments than Mbappé.
Bradley Barcola got on the board for France in the 82nd minute, extending the lead to two goals. In the fifth minute of added time, Senegal was able to get on the board thanks to Ibrahim Mbaye. In a tournament where goal differential can be so important, however, Mbappé scored an amazing second goal to finish the game 3-1, making him the all-time leader in goals for the country.

In Norway&#8217;s first appearance in the World Cup since 1998, Haaland stole the show. He scored the first two goals of the tournament for his country in a highly anticipated World Cup debut. While Iraq’s Aymen Hussein scored at the 39th minute between the two Norwegian goals, Norway was able to pull away with two goals, including an own goal from Hussein in the sixth minute of stoppage time.
The final match took place at midnight Eastern time, as Austria and Jordan faced off in San Francisco. Austria proved why they were the heavy favorite, winning 3-1 following a penalty kick goal by Marko Arnautovic in the 12th minute of added time in the second half to extend its lead back to two.
Argentina and France proved why they are some of the favorites of the 2026 World Cup, while Norway put its offensive power on display.

Texas Tech University star quarterback Brendan Sorsby is planning to withdraw his lawsuit against the NCAA and declare for the NFL’s supplemental draft in a shocking move, foregoing his final year of college eligibility. 
Just over a week after a Texas state court <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/court-rules-star-qb-can-return-after-ncaa-banned-him-over-gambling-admission">granted him an injunction</a> to suit up for the Red Raiders for the 2026-2027 season, Sorsby decided to leave college football for good and prepare for a potential career in the NFL. 
Both the spoken and legal backlash flooded in following the ruling on June 8, 2026. The University of Georgia and University of Nebraska were publicly boycotting facing Texas Tech on their schedule until the NCAA made a decision. Just hours before Sorsby’s decision, the Big 12 Conference, in which Texas Tech competes, sued the university to relieve the injunction he was granted.
Sorsby transferred from the University of Cincinnati to Texas Tech following two years with the program after spending his first two seasons with Indiana University. In those two seasons at Indiana, Sorsby wagered at least $90,000 — with some of his bets placed on the football team. The NCAA then banned Sorsby and took away his eligibility — but he sued the association and had regained it for next season.
Following the announcement, Sorsby took to social media to express his gratitude for those supporting his future endeavors.
“I am grateful for the support from my family, my Tech coaching staff, teammates, the community, and so many others who have encouraged me to address and learn more about this important issue,” Sorsby <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/DZoOnUOxP2u/?igsh=MW90NXB5ZGltM2x4dg%3D%3D">posted on his Instagram account.</a> “As my journey continues, I remain fully committed to and focused on being the best I can be, both on and off the field.”
In an attempt to continue his football career, Sorsby will apply for the NFL’s supplemental draft that will take place later this summer. The supplemental draft is a separate event from the NFL Draft that we see every April; teams will blind bid their 2027 NFL Draft selections for a player that was not able to declare for the draft due to an issue with their eligibility. The highest draft pick bid will draft that player and forfeit the pick in the following NFL Draft.
There have only been three players selected in the NFL’s supplemental draft in the last 15 years: Jalen Thompson in 2019, Josh Gordon in 2012, and Terrelle Pryor in 2011. All three had careers of at least seven years.
It is unknown whether any team will risk their future picks to select Sorsby, as his off the field concerns are what brought about his current predicament. NFL executives will have to decide whether Sorsby has learned from his six figure gambling decisions, or whether his football career will end in disappointment.

On Monday, Groups G and H began their group play in the 2026 World Cup, ending in a strange result of four ties across all matches.
International soccer giants such as Spain and Belgium took the field, surprisingly struggling against lesser competition. On the other side, the later matches of Saudi Arabia vs. Uruguay and Iran vs. New Zealand finished in draws, leaving the groups open for anyone to win.
Spain, which is one of the odds-on favorites to win the 2026 World Cup, tied 0-0 with Cabo Verde, also known as Cape Verde, in the most shocking result of the young tournament so far. The confidence in Spain was so high that one Polymarket bettor lost $1 million in an attempt to profit only $80,000.

Cape Verde, the second-smallest country in the entire field by population, held its own against one of the most lethal teams in the world. Forty-year-old goalkeeper Josimar Dias, who goes by Vozinha, willed Cape Verde to the draw, finishing with seven saves in an all-time underdog performance. 
Vozinha’s legendary performance gained him quite the following on social media, jumping from 45,000 followers to 4.3 million in less than 12 hours during and following his clean sheet against Spain. As of Tuesday afternoon, he is up to 8.2 million followers.

On the other side of the age spectrum, Spain’s teenage phenom Lamine Yamal surprisingly came off the bench in the 71st minute in this affair. While Yamal was recovering from a recent injury, Spain’s head coach, Luis de la Fuente, recently said he was in “perfect condition.”
Spain and Cape Verde will receive one point for the draw, but more importantly for Spain, the team is now facing questions about its chances to win the World Cup.
Unlike Spain, Belgium did not have any million-dollar bets placed on it to beat Egypt, but the team did have to play from behind following a 19th-minute goal from Emam Ashour. Belgium’s equalizing goal came from its all-time leading scorer Romelu Lukaku just seconds after he was substituted into the game. Lukaku forced an own goal off Egypt’s Mohamed Hany in the 66th minute.
Saudi Arabia and Uruguay saw a late goal in each half from both sides. Abdulelah Al-Amri of Saudi Arabia scored in the 41st minute, which was followed nearly 40 minutes later by Maxi Araujo’s for Uruguay in the 80th minute.
The Iran-New Zealand match was more of a back-and-forth affair, but Elijah Just’s two goals for New Zealand in the 7th and 54th minutes ended the game in a tie. With continued conflict between the United States and Iran, Iran&#8217;s national team was forced to fly back to its training camp in Tijuana following the game — one of several <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/the-special-rules-governing-irans-world-cup-team">serious safety measures</a> the United States plans to take while Iran competes in this year&#8217;s tournament.
All eight teams received only one point and finished with a score differential of zero following the draw, leaving Groups G and H open for the taking.
On Tuesday, some of the other favorites to win this year’s tournament will have their first match of group play. 
France will look to begin their revenge tour after losing to Argentina in the final of the 2022 World Cup when they take on Senegal. Erling Haaland and Norway go head-to-head against Iraq as they both look for a potential deep run in the tournament. Following that, Argentina and Lionel Messi will look to go back-to-back as they take on Algeria in their first game. Finally, Austria and Jordan will kick off at midnight ET to close out the day.

International Powerhouse Faces Shocking Upset In One Of Four World Cup Surprises On Monday

The United States Men’s National Team&#8217;s (USMNT) four-goal performance in its 2026 World Cup opener kicked off a wild weekend of soccer across the United States and the other host countries.
Team USA dominated Paraguay 4-1 to set the tone for its group.
The USMNT began group play against Paraguay Friday night in Los Angeles, the first match in Group D to take place. The United States is the favorite to win its group and aims to reach the round of 16 for the second consecutive tournament, after not qualifying for the World Cup in 2018.
It didn’t take long for the stars and stripes to strike first, as an attack led by star forward Christian Pulisic and midfielder Weston McKennie resulted in an own goal off Paraguay’s Damian Bobadilla at just the seven-minute mark.

The fireworks were only beginning for the American team. Forward Folarin Balogun made his name one to watch for the remainder of the tournament, scoring back-to-back goals in the 31st minute and the fifth minute of the added time in the first half to give the USMNT a 3-0 lead heading into the final 45 minutes of play.
Balogun joined America’s national team in 2023 after initially competing for England on an international level. Balogun was born in Brooklyn to Nigerian parents, but moved to London shortly after, where he grew up. He chose to represent the United States instead of England or Nigeria. This decision looks to be the right one, as he is providing a much-needed offensive spark. 
After slowing down the pace in the second half, Paraguay was able to cut the lead to two following a goal in the 73rd minute from Maurício Magalhães Prado. America’s Giovanni Reyna extended the lead back to three after scoring in the eighth minute of added time in the second half, resulting in the 4-1 win for the USMNT.
With the win, the United States earned three points and carries a +3 goal differential into possible tiebreaker scenarios for now. The U.S. is now tied for the lead in Group D, as Australia’s 2-0 win over Turkey earned it three points as well. Paraguay and Turkey both sit at zero points following the loss.
Group D play will resume Friday, June 19. The United States will take on Australia in a pivotal game to see who will win the group. With a win, the USMNT will stand firmly in a spot to win its group and advance to the knockout stages. With a loss, America will still be fighting for first or second place positioning in the group, where both teams advance to the next round. Turkey will take on Paraguay later that night.
The range of outcomes for the U.S.&#8217;s opponent following the group stages is large, as the team will not have an idea who it may be facing until the final days of group play. Updates will be provided as it gets closer.
While the host country usually makes it out of the group stages, the United States could be the first host country to win since France in 1998. In order to hoist the trophy, the U.S. will have to potentially face some of the biggest favorites to win this year’s tournament in Spain, Brazil, France, England, Portugal, Germany, and the reigning champion, Argentina. 
Besides the USMNT’s victory, many other notable games and highlights took place over the weekend. The first day and weekend of the 2026 World Cup did not disappoint.

Sunday’s matches provided a lot for fans as well. Curaçao competed in its first-ever World Cup game. It&#8217;s the smallest country by landmass and total population to ever make the World Cup. Unfortunately, the small nation had to go up against Germany — the four-time World Cup champion — and was soundly beaten 7-1.
The Netherlands and Japan had a much closer game, with the two countries going back and forth in the second half. Japan’s Daichi Kamada scored the equalizer in the 88th minute to stun the Dutch faithful. 
Ivory Coast continued the trend of late goals on Sunday as Amad Diallo scored the only goal of the match in the 90th minute, upsetting Ecuador 1-0.

World Cup Update: Team USA Puts Itself On The Map As A Contender

As the U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT) prepares for its 12th World Cup appearance, its foreign-born head coach turned to a popular American underdog moment to fully embrace the American sports culture. 
Head coach Mauricio Pochettino, who was born and raised in Murphy, Argentina, was hired by Team USA in September 2024 following the firing of coach Gregg Berhalter. Pochettino was highly sought after, and the United States hoped that the hire could push the USMNT to the next level.
In preparation for the 2026 World Cup, Scott Goodwin, a donor and supporter of the USMNT, introduced Pochettino to the “Miracle on Ice” as well as the film adaptation “Miracle.” Pochettino had never heard of the film or iconic moment before Goodwin spoke to him.
“I am not the guy that [follows] hockey,” Pochettino explained in his <a href="https://x.com/FOXSports/status/2065598421126570082">interview with Fox Sports</a>. 
“You have to watch this movie. I think it’s really going to help you understand American sports culture,” Goodwin told Fox Sports in an interview. “It’ll help him connect with the team.”
After watching the well-known film, Pochettino said he walked away with a handful of insights he can apply to the USMNT in its quest for a trophy in 2026. The first thing Pochettino noticed was the passion behind American sports. 
“That was a perfect film for me to watch,” Pochettino said. “I said we need more passion. How are we going to relate to our players?”
During the construction of the 2026 USMNT roster, another useful concept from the film found its way into Pochettino’s coaching philosophy.
“In football, you cannot win only because [of] one,” he stated. “We were talking [about] good players, ‘the right players,’ we need the right players.”
Similar to the national hockey team in 1980, the United States is seen as a long shot to win the tournament. Mike Eruzione, the player responsible for the game-winning goal against the Soviet Union 46 years ago, explained his support for Pochettino using the same notions that won them gold.
“Mauricio, he embraced what our team did. It’s a great message to his team, because nobody expects this team to win,” Eruzione said. “It was just like us in 1980. If it happened then, it could happen again.&#8221; 
Despite the drastic differences in sport, Pochettino will never forget the story of the “Miracle on Ice,” and it will forever leave a lasting impression for as long as he coaches the United States. 
“The love to play for your national team, it’s because you really love, you play for bigger things,” he insisted. “That film [made] me, you know, believe that this is the way we need to be like in this national team.”

The UFC held its once-in-a-lifetime “UFC Freedom 250” event on the White House South Lawn Sunday night, an event that featured patriotic walkouts, a Thunderbirds and Blue Angels flyover, and a string of must-see fights. 
The most anticipated fight of the night was saved for last, as Justin Gaethje looked to pull off one of the most miraculous wins in the history of the UFC over Ilia Topuria, who is a two weight class champion and is coming off of knockouts of all time greats in the sport against Alexander Volkanovski, Max Holloway, and Charles Oliveira.
Many doubted Gaethje, the American, whose odds closed from around 4-1 to even 6-1 on some sites. This didn&#8217;t stop Gaethje.
Following three rounds of domination and a near-doctor’s stoppage at the end of the third, Topuria’s corner threw in the towel at the end of the fourth round, earning Gaethje his first ever undisputed lightweight championship in arguably the biggest upset in the history of mixed martial arts.
“I’m from America, 250 years ago we were way bigger than 6-1 dogs, and look at us thriving now,” Gaethje stated in his post-fight interview.

The card consisted of seven matches including two title fights in the heavyweight and lightweight division. President and CEO of the UFC Dana White scheduled some of the biggest names in the sport to compete in the historical event, including Sean O’Malley, Michael Chandler, and Alex Pereira.
All seven fights finished via knockout (KO) or technical knockout (TKO), making it one of the most entertaining cards in the history of mixed martial arts.
Festivities began with a flyover from the Thunderbirds and Blue Angels during the national anthem. Diego Lopes and Steve Garcia set the tone early by engaging in exchanges in the center of the octagon.

Halfway through the second round, Lopes caught Garcia with a handful of beautiful shots, knocking him down and finishing the fight on the ground. While the Brazilian defeated an American in this bout, Bo Nickal was able to kick things off for the Americans, a sign of good things to come for the main event. Nickal defeated his opponent Kyle Daukaus by TKO in the first round, being the first of four Americans to win at UFC Freedom 250. 
American fan-favorite Michael Chandler stepped into the octagon next, but Brazilian star Mauricio Ruffy finished Chandler after a series of head kicks and straight shots at the end of the first round.
The United States was able to get back in the win column with fireworks in the ensuing fights. 
Heavyweight Josh Hokit defeated Derrick Lewis by TKO in the second round before cutting a Randy Savage/Hulk Hogan-esque promo, finishing with a comment for former first lady Michelle Obama.

Later in the night, France’s Ciryl Gane delivered another exciting win, knocking out fan-favorite and former middleweight and light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira in the beginning of the second round, who was looking to be the first fighter to be a champion at three different weight classes.
UFC Freedom 250 also included the fan fest, where mixed martial arts fans from across the country met up in the nation’s capital to attend meet and greets, other festivities, and the watch party, all taking place at The Ellipse. White estimated that nearly 200,000 people were in the park over the two-day event.
The massive event at the White House and surrounding areas led to backlash on social media. 
Members of the Left argued that the event was highly political, complaining that President Donald Trump was ruining the integrity of the South Lawn, even leading to a lawsuit being filed to stop the event, stating it was a “corrupt spectacle.&#8221; Following the event, White shot down any remarks suggesting that politics took over.
“I did all the media. We went to New York, I did far-Left. I did far-Right. I did down the middle. I did it all,” White said during the <a href="https://x.com/jedigoodman/status/2066419209991831775">press conference</a>. “I believe if you are an American, no matter where you sit politically, tonight was a proud night to just sit around and enjoy the 250th birthday of America.”

Mexico opened the 2026 World Cup with a 2-0 victory over South Africa on Thursday in Mexico City, capitalizing on an early defensive mistake and a second-half red card.
Mexico’s Julián Quiñones scored the tournament&#8217;s first goal in the eighth minute after South Africa’s midfielder Sphephelo S’miso “Yaya” Sithole lost possession just outside the penalty area, allowing Mexico to take an early 1-0 lead. The mistake directly led to the first goal of the 2026 World Cup.

South Africa prevented Mexico from adding to its advantage for the remainder of the first half, but the match swung further in Mexico&#8217;s favor shortly after halftime.
Sithole was shown a red card five minutes into the second half, the ejection reducing South Africa to 10 men for the remainder of the match. The turnover that led to Mexico&#8217;s opening goal and the early red card made Sithole a central figure in South Africa&#8217;s defeat.
Mexico eventually doubled its lead in the 67th minute when Raúl Jiménez scored on a header to give Mexico a 2-0 lead.

A 30-year-old pregnant mother from Indiana was found dead in Mexico more than three months after she and her children were reported missing.
Makala Pendley was found dead earlier this week in a village in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas, according to local officials. Pendley was six months pregnant when she disappeared with her seven children in February.
Her sister, Mauricia Lambert, said in a <a href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/makala-pendley">GoFundMe</a> that Pendley was found “stabbed, raped, sodomized, naked, with her head bashed in.” Mexican authorities said Pendley died from traumatic brain injury caused by blunt-force trauma, according to local reports.
After identifying Pendley&#8217;s body, authorities began searching for her children, who were believed to have been with her, and for her partner, Joseph Jude Butler Jr., whom Mexican officials identified as a suspect in the case.
The children were later found in “good health” in the San Cristóbal de las Casas neighborhood, where they were immediately placed under government protection. Butler was arrested shortly after, as <a href="https://www.indystar.com/story/news/crime/2026/06/11/makala-pendley-chiapas-state-prosecutor-jorge-luis-llaven-abarca-joseph-jude-butler-jr-arrest/90509380007/">announced</a> by Chiapas State Prosecutor Jorge Luis Llaven Abarca during a Facebook Live broadcast on Monday.
“In the coming hours, his criminal responsibility will be determined, and he may be brought before justice,” Llaven Abarca stated. “We will seek the maximum sentence of 100 years for this perpetrator of femicide.”
Just a few days prior, Llaven Abarca said authorities had found the body of a deceased woman in the Elambó Bajo area of Zinacantán.
“Based on the time of death, she had been at the location where she was found for between 8 and 12 hours,” he said on the broadcast just days before the identification of the body.
Pendley and her children were reported missing on February 25 after the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children issued an alert. They were believed to have left Indianapolis and traveled to Mexico.
Pendley was found alive in Mexico last month after her sister told <a href="https://fox59.com/indiana-news/pregnant-indy-mom-found-murdered-in-mexico-her-missing-kids-found-safe/">FOX59</a> that she had fled there because she feared “her children would be taken away from her.” Authorities took custody of her children at the time before later releasing them back to Pendley.
During Monday&#8217;s broadcast, Mexican authorities said American officials informed them that Butler has a history of criminal activity. Llaven Abarca said Butler had an active warrant in Alaska and had previously been detained in the United States in connection with allegations including assault, robbery, fraud, illegal weapons possession, intimidation, and rape.
Butler and Pendley had been in an on-and-off “toxic relationship” since Pendley was 16, according to the Indianapolis Star. This includes a legal incident in August 2025 where Pendley claimed she was assaulted by Butler in Yucatan, Mexico.
Pendley’s body and her seven children are expected to be returned to Indianapolis.

The United States is imposing strict travel restrictions on Iran&#8217;s national soccer team as the 2026 World Cup begins amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran.
Iran&#8217;s national team, known as Team Melli, is scheduled to play all three of its matches in the United States, beginning with a June 15 match against New Zealand at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.
The team had initially planned to train in Tucson, Arizona, but FIFA approved a request to move Iran&#8217;s base camp to Tijuana, Mexico, following the U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran earlier this year and increasing security concerns surrounding the tournament.
President Donald Trump <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald-trump/trump-warns-iranian-world-cup-team-away-us-life-safety-rcna263197">warned</a> in March that although Iran was welcome to compete in the World Cup, he did not believe it was &#8220;appropriate&#8221; for the team to travel to the United States &#8220;for their own life and safety.&#8221;
The visa process has also drawn scrutiny after U.S. officials said some members of Iran&#8217;s delegation had ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which the United States designates as a terrorist organization.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio addressed the issue during a House Appropriations subcommittee hearing, saying the administration had no objection to Iranian athletes entering the country.
“We have no problems with the athletes, as we stated earlier, or the support staff,” Rubio <a href="https://global.espn.com/football/story/_/id/49017941/iran-players-say-us-visa-policies-create-world-cup-tension">stated</a>. “But what we’re not going to allow them is for them to embed in their delegation a bunch of people that we know have nothing to do with athletics and have ties to the IRGC or things of that nature.”
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) later said the visas required for Iran to compete have been issued, while making clear that the administration would not approve every member of the delegation. 
“The visas necessary for Iran to compete in the World Cup, including for athletes and necessary support staff, have been issued,” the DHS commented. “We will not allow the Iranian team to abuse this system to sneak terrorists into the United States under false pretenses.”
Iranian players and officials have criticized the restrictions, arguing that visa delays and travel limits have disrupted the team&#8217;s preparation for the tournament.
Iranian officials also claimed the team would be forced to enter and leave the United States on the same day as each match, but DHS disputed that account.
“These statements are untrue,” the DHS spokesperson explained in a <a href="https://www.straitstimes.com/sport/football/iranian-world-cup-players-will-be-able-to-enter-us-the-day-before-matches-dhs-says">statement</a>. “Thanks to the generosity of President Trump, the Iranian team will be able to arrive the day before their matches.”
Iran arrived in Mexico this week and will remain based in Tijuana while traveling into the United States for its matches. The arrangement marks one of the most politically sensitive logistical challenges of the 2026 World Cup, which is being hosted jointly by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

The Special Rules Governing Iran’s World Cup Team

During a hearing on the Sports Broadcasting Act of 1961 (SBA) Wednesday afternoon, Congress spoke out on the NFL’s antitrust exemption, arguing that the league is exploiting the law to make fans pay absurd prices across multiple streaming platforms to watch their favorite teams suit up.
The hearing followed a Monday <a href="https://judiciary.house.gov/media/press-releases/new-report-sports-broadcasting-act-special-interest-antitrust-exemption-gone">press release</a> from the House Judiciary Committee, accusing the NFL of veering away from the original intent of the law created 65 years ago. Rep. Scott Fitzgerald (R-WI), chair of the House Judiciary Committee’s antitrust subcommittee, voiced his concerns.
“Sixty five years later, however, it is fair for this body to ask whether the professional sports leagues have kept up their end of the bargain,” Fitzgerald stated. “In my opinion, they have not, and sports fans are paying the price because of it.”
To watch every game in 2026, it costs nearly $800 across nine different streaming services. 
Originally, the NFL benefited from making as much money in media as possible for “revenue-sharing arrangements” to keep competitive balance alive, but the league is not in the same financial position now as it was in 1961. Both Fox Corp. and Fitzgerald argue that the SBA was never intended to allow the NFL to distribute the media rights across numerous platforms for its own benefit. 
“The Sports Broadcasting Act was designed to facilitate the distribution of games through free over-the-air television,” he explained. “It was not intended to provide a perpetual shield for leagues to coordinate the sale of media rights across every new technology and distribution platform that emerges.”
The question that arises is whether or not fans really benefit from the SBA, given how watching sports has drastically changed over the years. Congress will now have to make a decision on whether they are going to revise the antitrust exemption, leave it as is, or ban it altogether.

The NFL’s Subscription Maze May Have Finally Met Its Match

France and Germany’s $116 billion attempt to build their own fighter jet to replace their current models has officially been scrapped.
The fighter plane segment of the Future Combat Air System (FCAS) project created in 2017 dedicated $116 billion to build sixth-generation jets to use in battle by 2040. 
French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz declared that the project was no longer feasible after months of stalemate between Dassault Aviation and Airbus, France&#8217;s and Germany’s industry partners respectively.
“The German authorities considered that it was not possible to put further pressure on the companies concerned,” Macron’s office, the Élysée Palace, explained in a statement.
The proposed fighter planes were supposed to combine advanced sensors, artificial intelligence, enhanced stealth technology, and other upgrades to use them for future air combat.
Signs of the potential flaming out were seen earlier this year. European Union Defense Commissioner Andrius Kubilius admitted that the plan was a “failure” and that Europe has struggled in &#8220;multinational defense projects.&#8221;
The FCAS project failure raises multiple questions about the integrity of Europe’s national defense. Leaders in Europe believed the plan was a test if they could develop advanced technology as they promised without the help of the United States. France and Germany have recently struggled with a next-generation tank project with the Main Ground Combat System (MGCS) as well.
It also underlined potential disagreements between the two governments, which have both already expressed their alternative options after the project fell through.
Merz has publicly inquired if the sixth-generation planes will even be necessary, and that their requirements for the planes were not similar to those of France’s. France, on the other hand, is actively pursuing similar blueprints.
“The French authorities will continue to encourage our companies and armed forces to explore ways and means of pursuing ambitious European projects that are consistent with our national security interests,” the Élysée Palace added in its official statement.
While Berlin is looking into possible substitutes following the collapse, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius explained that if FCAS were to be thought of today, it simply wouldn’t happen.
“With what we know today, we would no longer launch this project in the way it was originally set up,” Pistorius told officials.
European countries are continuing to struggle to enhance their arms without the help of America in a time when everyone else is quickly advancing.
