On Sunday, President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/donald-trump" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Donald Trump</a> designated February 9 to be &#8220;Gulf of America Day,&#8221; the latest move by the commander in chief to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-announces-u-s-to-change-name-of-the-gulf-of-mexico" target="_blank" rel="noopener">rename</a> the Gulf of Mexico.
&#8220;I call upon public officials and all the people of the United States to observe this day with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities,&#8221; Trump said in his proclamation.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced on X that Trump signed the document to declare the new holiday as Air Force One flew over the gulf on the way to the Super Bowl.

Before taking office in January, Trump <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-announces-u-s-to-change-name-of-the-gulf-of-mexico" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> that he would rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America. He took aim at Mexico, raising issues with trade deficits and cartels.
And, on the day of his inauguration, Trump <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/01/restoring-names-that-honor-american-greatness/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">signed</a> an order directing the Interior secretary to &#8220;take all appropriate actions&#8221; to rename the U.S. Continental Shelf area as the Gulf of America.
Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, who was with Trump in Air Force One on Sunday, <a href="https://x.com/secretaryburgum/status/1888701693707035001?s=46&amp;t=o-U3qwC25WnWaylJ0oeG7Q" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> that his department had implemented the president&#8217;s instructions from the executive order.
