<p>Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Monday that she is moving 10,000 members of the country&#8217;s National Guard to the U.S./Mexico border to stop drug trafficking.</p>
<p>Sheinbaum made the announcement after speaking earlier in the day with President Donald Trump following his decision to hit the country with 25% tariffs for not doing more to stop the flow of fentanyl into the U.S.</p>
<p>&#8220;Mexico will immediately reinforce the northern border with 10,000 members of the National Guard to prevent drug trafficking from Mexico to the United States, particularly fentanyl,&#8221; she said in a statement.</p>
<p>&#8220;The United States is committed to working to prevent the trafficking of high-powered weapons to Mexico,&#8221; she continued. &#8220;Our teams will begin working today on two fronts: security and trade.&#8221;</p>
<p>She also said that the Trump administration agreed to pause the implementation of tariffs for one month.</p>
<p>Trump confirmed the news in a statement on social media, saying that they had &#8220;a very friendly conversation.&#8221;</p>
<p>Trump said that the soldiers Mexico was sending to the border were &#8220;specifically designated to stop the flow of fentanyl, and illegal migrants into our Country.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;We further agreed to immediately pause the anticipated tariffs for a one month period during which we will have negotiations headed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent, and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and high-level Representatives of Mexico,&#8221; Trump said. &#8220;I look forward to participating in those negotiations, with President Sheinbaum, as we attempt to achieve a &#8216;deal&#8217; between our two Countries.&#8221;</p>
