Engaged in a tit-for-tat trade war with the United States, Canada is pursuing stronger ties with Europe and Asia in an effort to ease its trade woes.
Canada and the United States have each imposed 50% tariffs on certain imports from the other country, and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is looking for avenues to get relief from the tariffs. Committed to rallying the world’s “middle powers,” Carney has said that he is “not looking to become a member” of the European Union but is seeking a “unique alliance.” 
On Wednesday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen offered Carney a solution. 
Von der Leyen <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2026/09/16/canada-builds-ties-europe-asia-turning-away-us-amid-trade-war/">offered</a> to make Canada the first “associate member” of the European Union. Von der Leyen framed the proposal as an effort to build “common strength” rather than a move “against anyone else.” Becoming a full E.U. member typically takes years and requires extensive negotiations and legal changes, but it remains unclear what Canada would have to do, or how long it would take, to become an “associate member.” If confirmed, the status would be the first of its kind. 
President Donald Trump <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/trump-warns-eu-tariffs-over-canadas-potential-associate-membership-calls-it-2026-09-17/">responded</a> to the proposal Wednesday night after disembarking from Air Force One for a campaign event in North Carolina. 
“I think it’s laughable,” Trump said. “If they do that, if I think it’s at all a hostile act, I will put very serious tariffs or stop trading with Europe on many things.” The president added that his next move would depend on what he believes Europe and Canada intend to accomplish.
“If it’s a good intention, that’s fine,” he continued. “If it’s a bad intention, we’ll put very heavy tariffs on Europe.”
One E.U. diplomat was reportedly caught off guard by the proposal, saying that “nobody really knows what it means.” Another diplomat added that some E.U. members were concerned von der Leyen “is overpromising and won’t be able to deliver.” Yet another diplomat called the invitation an “unfortunate proposal, which has never been discussed with Member States.”
At the same time, Canada is also pursuing new trade negotiations with China, a country that praised Canada for walking away from negotiations with the United States. Chinese state media even <a href="https://www.straitstimes.com/asia/east-asia/china-media-hails-canadas-chinese-style-tariff-retaliation">praised</a> Canada’s efforts as “Chinese-style” tariff retaliation. In September, the countries re-engaged in military talks for the <a href="https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/canada-china-military-cooperation-9.7337345">first</a> time in eight years. The conversations had been put on pause after Beijing kept two Canadians in detention in 2018. Officials met in early September in Canada “in support of ongoing military-to-military communications at the functional level.” 
Shortly after the talks between China and Canada, the Canadian government added new tariffs on steel, dairy, and agricultural equipment. The Trump administration also imposed bans on certain Canadian alcohol and “other products that were subject to the 50% tariffs imposed.” The new import bans are set to <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/fact-sheets/2026/09/fact-sheet-president-donald-j-trump-responds-to-canadas-retaliation/">take effect</a> at the end of this month.

American workers at Bombardier&#8217;s U.S. headquarters in Wichita, Kansas, say they are worried about their jobs as President Donald Trump escalates his fight with Canada and the Canadian jet manufacturer. 
“No more selling Bombardier in the United States,” Trump <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/beer-company-shifts-production-to-u-s-as-trump-tariffs-bite?author=Brecca+Stoll&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=2&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=Beer+Giant+Makes+A+Very+American+Move+After+Trump+Squeeze">said</a> last week. “If they want our market, they must build here, and stop treating America like a ‘piggybank.&#8217;” 
But Bombardier already has a significant footprint in America. The company employs roughly 3,500 people nationwide, including more than 1,200 in Wichita, and works with approximately 2,800 American suppliers across 47 states. It spends more than $2.5 billion annually with U.S. suppliers.
Bombardier is currently recruiting to fill <a href="https://www.reuters.com/legal/litigation/bombardier-still-recruiting-fill-500-open-us-positions-despite-trump-threats-2026-09-09/">500</a> open U.S. jobs.
“This is ridiculous,&#8221; one Wichita employee <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2026/09/14/bombardier-workers-wichita-push-back-against-trumps-ban-threat/">told</a> the Washington Post. &#8220;We have thousands of Americans working here, and I don’t want to be thinking about losing my job.”
Being shut out of the U.S. market could be economically catastrophic for Bombardier, with American customers accounting for more than <a href="https://www.investing.com/news/economy-news/what-happens-if-bombardier-jets-are-not-sold-in-the-us-4898699">half</a> of the jet maker’s total sales revenue.
&#8220;I’ve talked with people who think this is all a game of some kind that he’s playing,&#8221; another employee said. &#8220;And that’s crazy to me. I don’t think he cares about us and our jobs versus using us as a pawn.&#8221;
&#8220;Our lives should be treated with more respect than that,” the employee added.
Bombardier raised the same concern in its response to Trump, emphasizing just how much American labor and manufacturing goes into its aircraft. 
“Bombardier aircraft are built with American-made components such as engines, avionics, and many more key systems provided by great American companies,” the company said. 
Bombardier has operations across more than 20 states, including major facilities in Kansas, Texas, California, and Florida. 
Trump’s threat also caught the attention of Kansas lawmakers. Sen. Jerry Moran (R-KS) contacted the Trump administration to make sure the president was aware of Bombardier’s “significant contributions” to Kansas. Jim Howell, a Republican commissioner in Sedgwick County, said a ban could “be devastating to Bombardier” and result in a “huge loss.” 
Aviation consultant Rolland Vincent said cutting a Canadian manufacturer out of the American market is not as simple as it sounds because modern aircraft rely on supply chains that cross national borders.
“There’s no aircraft that’s built that has pure national origin,” Vincent said. 
Still, Vincent cautioned against dismissing Trump’s warning. 
“It’s a serious threat from a serious person,” he said. “Nobody wants to be on the headline when it comes to the anger of someone who’s got the power of the president.”
It’s not Trump’s first threat against Bombardier. In January, he suggested that he would revoke certifications for Bombardier’s jets and impose a 50% tariff on Canadian aircraft. Those threats were never carried out.

Donald Trump’s $5,000 “dividend” proposal to every U.S. adult should be taken seriously, not because the arithmetic has been worked out, since there isn’t any, but because of what the idea represents.
Trump equates the payout with a corporate distribution of profits in a cash dividend, even as the year’s federal deficit <a href="https://www.cbo.gov/publication/61984">surpasses</a> $2 trillion. Plenty have pointed out that the Trump dividend is unaffordable, but that&#8217;s not the issue. Much of what the federal government does is unaffordable, yet we do it anyway, so exorbitance is no deterrent.
The main story about the dividend is the growing promotion of giving “free” money to able-bodied adults. Going well beyond the traditional framing of transfer payments as a “safety net,” Trump is increasingly normalizing government cash payments detached from work, production, or any specific emergency as a routine feature of American economic life.
We’ve already seen <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/waynecrews/2025/11/17/trumps-2000-tariff-checks-the-backdoor-ubi-conservatives-should-fear/">Trump’s DOGE dividend teaser and his proposed $2,000 tariff dividend</a>. Like Bernie Sanders, Trump has also <a href="https://cei.org/blog/the-trump-sanders-plan-to-nationalize-ai/">expressed support</a> for government-instigated sharing of the gains from AI with Americans, raising the prospect that AI-driven productivity could become another rationale for expanding direct and indirect federal transfers and <a href="https://cei.org/news_releases/cei-report-ai-industrial-policy-schemes-create-misalignment-by-design-and-a-new-ai-welfare-state/">enlarging rather than shrinking</a> the entitlement state.
The dividend’s obvious unaffordability is less the issue than the radical alteration of the relationship between citizens and government that it invites. Once people are accustomed to receiving routine, unearned government payments, the political question changes from whether government should make such payments to how large they should be, and that’s the death knell for limited government.
Thus, the dividend is a dream come true for progressives, <a href="https://cei.org/blog/universal-basic-income-and-the-custodial-administrative-state/">whose North Star</a> is the Universal Basic Income (UBI) and the <a href="https://cei.org/blog/universal-basic-income-and-the-custodial-administrative-state/">custodial administrative state</a>. So, any protestations they might make over the $5,000 one-time payment are perfunctory.
Congress won’t enact the dividend now, but it absolutely could at the outset of the next significant economic shock. The COVID experience demonstrated how quickly extraordinary federal payments can be implemented even for non-needy households. The line between emergency relief and a <a href="https://cei.org/blog/universal-basic-income-and-the-custodial-administrative-state/">broader entitlement expectation</a> got erased: indiscriminate stimulus checks, expanded refundable credits, enhanced SNAP, and other crisis measures normalized the idea that Washington can simply send money to Americans at will. Trump is running with that ball.
Further, depending on the dividend funding scheme, behavior can be incentivized or controlled, encouraging public embrace of poor policy; getting “paid,” in effect, to support and vote for tariff policy or other ill-founded regulations. Such policy feedback loops will distort economic decisions and prices, and can lead to demands for, and promises for, still more payments.
And once Trump’s distribution machinery exists, future administrations will happily inherit it. A future president need not endorse particular Trump policies to recognize and exploit the malign appeal of the dividend mechanism. The tariff and AI dividends can readily become a climate dividend or an affordability dividend. The revenue source, the amount, the eligibility rules, and the rationales can all be changed to induce dependence, reward favored constituencies, and advance the progressive cause of ever more government.
This is how the machinery for a new <a href="https://cei.org/news_releases/cei-report-ai-industrial-policy-schemes-create-misalignment-by-design-and-a-new-ai-welfare-state/">21st-century entitlement state</a> is being built almost without anyone noticing. The Left has spent decades developing the intellectual and political infrastructure of the welfare state. Conservatives have traditionally argued that government should instead create the conditions for people to work, invest, produce, own property, and prosper independently of government. Trump’s dividend politics and other moves, such as equity stakes in private firms, reverse that logic, positioning the federal government to steer and allocate an increasingly large share of national economic resources. Progressives excel at this game and are happy to see Trump’s $5,000 and raise him thousands more.
If progressives are happy to see this machinery being built, conservatives and libertarians should think about how to prevent a future administration from inheriting and expanding it. That is precisely why something like an <a href="https://cei.org/blog/a-one-pager-on-an-abuse-of-crisis-prevention-act/">Abuse-of-Crisis Prevention Act</a> is needed now, well before any future genuine crisis. An AOC Prevention Act would prevent emergencies and other shocks from becoming automatic occasions for federal expansion by limiting emergency powers, strengthening household and business resilience, and imposing greater discipline on crisis-driven spending and regulation. The emergence of a $5,000 non-emergency cash “dividend” for no reason whatsoever makes that case all the more urgent.
Trump’s dividend, properly seen, is not just another unaffordable Washington giveaway. It is a down payment on a new entitlement expectation: a government that routinely distributes cash to citizens and a political system that increasingly debates how much to distribute next. The one-time dividend can become a permanent fixture, with each new crisis, policy initiative, or political constituency supplying a rationale for the next one. That is precisely the machinery limited-government advocates should be dismantling, not building.
The question clear-headed policymakers should be asking is not “How do we fund the next dividend?” but “Why are we building the machinery to make dividends permanent?”

President Donald Trump has promised an end to the 15% tariff on Irish whiskey.
Trump was attending the Amgen Irish Open at his Trump International Golf Links resort in Doonbeg, County Clare — and he took the microphone at the contest&#8217;s close to present a trophy to Irish golfer Shane Lowry, who won the tournament.
&#8220;This is an honor. We&#8217;re so proud. The whole Doonbeg — and frankly, Ireland itself has been so incredible, so inviting, and we&#8217;re very honored presenting you with a great course, it&#8217;s been great,&#8221; Trump said, but then he pivoted.
&#8220;I want to mention one thing. Taoiseach and I talked about it, and Shane talked about it, and everybody&#8217;s been bugging me, they&#8217;re saying, &#8216;Would you do me a favor? It&#8217;s so unfair what&#8217;s going on. Could you possibly take the tariffs off of Irish whisky?'&#8221;
The crowd roared with laughter, and Trump smiled before he continued, &#8220;And I said on behalf of the United States of America, I am going to take the tariffs off of Irish whiskey.&#8221;
The crowd cheered so loud then that Trump was completely drowned out as he finished his sentence.
&#8220;Thank you,&#8221; Trump said, turning to Lowry and adding, &#8220;Shane, great job.&#8221;
Trump was not clear about when the <a href="https://commission.europa.eu/topics/trade/eu-us-trade-deal_en">tariffs</a> — currently set at 15% as part of the flat tariffs against many European Union exports — would be lifted. Those tariffs took effect on July 1, 2026.

&#8220;The King and Queen got me to do something that nobody else was able to do, without hardly even asking!&#8221; Trump said at the time.
The zero-tariff policy on Scotch whisky took effect July 24, a change the Scotch Whisky Association welcomed as &#8220;welcome news for business on both sides of the Atlantic.&#8221;

Politics is almost never about the merits. This is one of the toughest lessons to learn in Washington. Some people never learn it, especially intellectuals who spend their days debating evidence-based arguments about policy issues. But the gut-feeling theory of politics is key to understanding President Trump’s trade war with Canada. For him, this isn’t about economics or foreign policy. It’s personal. Also, <a href="https://cei.org/studies/three-reasons-tariffs-dont-work/">he just likes tariffs</a>.
In fairness, Trump administration officials do have rationalizations for the various rounds of Canadian tariffs he has enacted since 2018. A partial list includes national security, trade deficits, fentanyl, and forced labor.
National security is the stated reason for the administration’s steel, aluminum, and copper tariffs, which are currently at 50%. The problem is that Canada is not a national security threat.
Canadians have fought alongside Americans in nearly every major American war in the last century. This includes wars unrelated to Canadian interests, such as the post-9/11 wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. They’ve been there for us when we’ve needed them.
Canada is also part of the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing alliance, along with Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. For the last 85 years, Canadian and American intelligence agencies have shared their secrets with each other and the other Five Eyes members. If this were causing national security problems, surely these would have emerged by now.
Instead, when then-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau phoned President Trump about his first-term steel and aluminum tariffs, Trump was reduced to invoking the <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2018/06/06/politics/war-of-1812-donald-trump-justin-trudeau-tariff/index.html">War of 1812</a>. This was clearly not about the merits.
The law Trump cited for these tariffs is Section 232 of the 1962 Trade Expansion Act, which requires a national security justification for the president to enact tariffs. Citing the War of 1812 might be within the letter of that law, but it violates its spirit.
Trade deficits are another Trump bete noir and were cited to justify the Liberation Day tariffs the Supreme Court struck down. A country has a trade deficit when it imports more than it exports. Economists since Adam Smith have dismissed the balance of trade as an economic health indicator, for the same reason I am not concerned about my long-running trade deficit with my local grocery store: I get things in return for my money that I value more.
Trump’s threat to impose tariffs to prevent nearly non-existent fentanyl trafficking across the Canadian border followed the same pattern. First, Trump decided he wanted tariffs; then advisors rationalized it.
In the last few months, Trump declined to renew his own United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) free trade pact with Mexico and Canada, though the agreement will remain in place through 2036. He also cited forced labor as a rationale for enacting tariffs, drawing on the same Depression-era tariff that Ben Stein mocked in the 1986 Matthew Broderick movie “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.”
This has a problem. Canada already bans forced labor. The USMCA trade agreement, which Trump negotiated, also contains provisions banning trade in goods produced with forced labor.
Add to this Trump’s continuing stream of personal insults against both Trudeau and current Prime Minister Mark Carney, such as calling them “Governor,” regular threats to make Canada America’s 51st state, and most recently his executive order renaming Lake Ontario as Lake America, and we see why Canadians are upset.
Canadians were at first shocked and betrayed that America, of all countries, out of nowhere started imposing tariffs and hurling insults across the border. Now they are angry, which risks making things even worse.
Matthew Broderick offers wisdom here, too. In the 1983 movie “WarGames,” he learned that the only way to win a nuclear war is not to play. The same is true of trade wars. Tariffs are a self-harming policy. If America wants to hurt itself with tariffs, it doesn’t make any sense for Canada to respond by hurting itself with its own tariffs. But again, this isn’t about the merits.
Even if Carney wanted to maintain his dignity in the face of Trump’s bluster, his supporters wouldn’t let him. Shock and betrayal have given way to anger, and Canadians want revenge, even if it will cost them economically.
That gets us to the current moment. Just this week, after Canada enacted a tranche of new tariffs on September 8, Trump announced a further tariff increase. One can only hope that this spat doesn’t go as far as Trump’s China trade war did in 2025, when some tariff rates briefly reached 145%.
At some point, temperatures will cool. Rebuilding the trust Americans and Canadians have shared for generations will take years, if not decades. While there are all kinds of merit-based economic and geopolitical reasons a strong US-Canada alliance matters, in the end it comes down to a simple fact: cooperation is better than conflict, and peace is better than war.

Japanese beer maker Sapporo Breweries Ltd. plans to move production of nonalcoholic beer for American consumers from Canada to the United States in response to the Trump administration&#8217;s “escalating” 50% tariff. 
“The tariff, and also escalating the 50% tariff, will impact us very much, particularly the next year,” Sapporo Chief Strategy Officer Rieko Shofu <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/videos/2026-09-07/sapporo-breweries-cso-on-tariffs-iran-war-video">told</a> Bloomberg. When pressed on how quickly the company would expand production in the United States, she replied, “Next year.” 
Sapporo expects to begin producing the nonalcoholic beer in the United States in the first half of 2027.
The Trump administration’s additional 50% tariffs on certain Canadian imports took effect August 22 after trade negotiations between the two countries collapsed. The White House <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2026/08/temporary-suspension-of-additional-duties-to-offset-canadian-discrimination-against-the-commerce-of-the-united-states-with-respect-to-alcoholic-beverages-dairy-and-motor-vehicles">said</a> the tariffs were imposed in response to Canada&#8217;s treatment of American exports, including cars, alcohol, and dairy products. 
Sapporo currently produces nonalcoholic beer destined for the American market in Canada. The company said it is considering acquiring or building a brewery on the West Coast or contracting with another manufacturer to produce it. Sapporo already operates a brewery on the East Coast, but Shofu said rising sales would soon push it to capacity. 
&#8220;Tariffs are something out of our control,&#8221; Shofu said. &#8220;We&#8217;re going to move ahead with local production.&#8221;
Sapporo operates production facilities in the United States, Canada, and Vietnam. It may not be the only foreign company pushed toward additional American manufacturing. 
On Monday night, President Donald Trump threatened to block Canadian aerospace company Bombardier from selling planes in the United States unless it manufactured them domestically.
“No more selling Bombardier in the United States,” President Trump posted on social media. “If they want our market, they must build here, and stop treating America like a &#8216;piggybank.'&#8221; 
At 12:01 am on Tuesday, Canada imposed retaliatory tariffs on roughly $20 billion worth of American goods. The duties range from 15% to 50% and cover hundreds of products, including steel, aluminum, cheese, appliances, clothing, cosmetics, farm equipment, and others.
Canada says its measures match the American tariffs dollar for dollar and rate for rate. RBC Economics, the research arm of the Royal Bank of Canada, <a href="https://www.wowt.com/2026/09/08/what-know-about-canadas-escalating-trade-war-with-us-carney-retaliates-with-tariffs/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">claimed</a> the Canadian tariffs were unlikely to significantly affect overall U.S. economic growth but could hit some American businesses extremely hard.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said last week that Canada could not sustain a prolonged tit-for-tat trade war with its much larger neighbor. 
“Well, I don&#8217;t think you can be in a tit-for-tat with someone who&#8217;s 13 times larger than you are,” he <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2026/08/31/us/politics/canada-bessent-carney-trade.html">added</a>. “They say they&#8217;re doing OK. What else are they going to say?” 
In a national video address on Tuesday, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c8jdev0422jo" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>, “We have everything we need to pivot and prosper,” but that pivot “will come at a cost.”
“There&#8217;s always a cost to action, but it doesn&#8217;t come close to the cost of standing still,” he added.
Carney has argued that accepting Trump’s demands could leave Canada even more dependent on the United States and <a href="https://spectrumlocalnews.com/mo/st-louis/politics/2026/09/08/u-s--canada-trade-war-tariffs-take-effect">devastate</a> Canadian manufacturing. Bessent has described the proposed agreement as “the best trade deal of any country on the globe.”

Some foreigners, and other irrelevant people, complain that Americans don’t care about their tiny, unimportant countries. And of course, that’s true, and for obvious reasons.
Why should we waste our time thinking about some weirdly shaped blotch on the living room globe when they can’t even speak English there like civilized people, and we could be focusing our attention on the mighty and virtuous empire that gave the world all the truly great people in history, like Babe Ruth and the Hardy Boys and Julius Caesar and so on?
But now and then, it is important to hear the latest news about some meaningless hellhole where we might be buying computer parts or killing people or… well, that about covers it, really.
So now, I’d like to catch up on what the Trump administration is doing to achieve our foreign policy goals, whatever the hell they may be.
Let’s begin with the war. This week, the administration announced it was going to unleash financial hell on our enemies by cutting them off from every possible source of income. Then, if that works in Canada, we might try it in Iran as well.

The Canadians objected to this in that girlishly adorable little petulant way they have, and so our president was forced to teach them a lesson by putting a 50% tariff on their major exports to our country, like hockey sticks and boredom. The Canadians — who really are cute when they’re mad — retaliated by continuing the negotiations in French so no one here could understand what they were saying.

Meanwhile, in Iran, Trump has declared that the Strait of Hormuz is now completely under our control and will be moved to upstate New York and renamed the Strait of Screw You, Canada. The president says the Iranians are only days away from surrendering and admitting this whole Koran business was just a prank to get people to blow themselves up because they thought that would be funny. Trump says the end of the war would have been negotiated long ago, but we killed so many of their leaders that now the only Ayatollah left is a one-legged homosexual, who’s afraid if he steps down, the mullahs will throw him off a building before they find out about the whole fake Koran thing.
Finally, in the most shocking development concerning tiny little foreign people, the spare prince of England and his wife what’s-her-name have announced they are leaving the United States and returning to wherever England is because they thought they would be famous here, but instead no one cares about them.
The reaction in the U.S. was muted because no one cares about them, but in England, it was a different story. Due to one of their quirky, primitive indigenous superstitions, many people in England still believe it’s a real place and the things that happen there matter.
So The Daily Wire sent a reporter to London to gauge the reaction of the population and also pick up some Indian take-out. Our reporter interviewed one typical Englishman on the street, asking him, “How do you feel about the return of the spare prince and what’s-her-name?” The man replied, “Allahu Akbar,” then brandished a knife and chased our reporter around the Cupid statue in Piccadilly Circus, which disappointingly turned out to be just another street without any dancing elephants or acrobats like a real circus would have. Our reporter did manage to escape the attacker and ask another typical Englishman for his response, and the man replied with typical English honesty, “Allahu Akbar,” and ran him over with a truck.

President Trump on Thursday signed an executive order directing the Interior Department to rename Lake Ontario “Lake America” as his trade battle with Canada continues to escalate.
Trump called reporters into the Oval Office to announce the move, while the White House made the name change official in a social media post.
“EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY: Lake Ontario is renamed to LAKE AMERICA!” the White House wrote.
The move is a direct swipe at Canadian political leaders, whom Trump criticized during his Oval Office gaggle with reporters.
“They’re nasty people,” Trump said of Prime Minister Mark Carney and Ontario Premier Doug Ford. “But they treat us very badly. Canada treats us very badly. I would say that of all countries, as you know, we have — President Xi coming in a couple of weeks — we deal with a lot of people.”
“They’ll ask me, who’s the worst to deal with on trade? And I said, that’s easy. Canada. They are the worst to trade!” he added. “They feel entitled, and we can’t have that.”
The president first floated the idea earlier this week, posting on Truth Social that he was considering a total name swap for one of North America’s iconic Great Lakes.

President Trump is right to recognize the pressure record-high beef prices are placing on American families, and the need for action to bring relief at the checkout line. Allowing up to 300,000 metric tons of ground beef to enter the country tariff-free for 90 days, with a commitment that the imported beef be sold at 25% below current market prices, is a meaningful step toward addressing the immediate strain. But the forces driving today’s beef prices have been building for years, and creating a more affordable, resilient American beef supply will require looking beyond short-term fixes to the long-term health of our cattle industry.
After more than 50 years raising cattle at<a href="https://whiteoakpastures.com/"> White Oak Pastures</a>, I am acutely aware that restoring America’s cattle herd and stabilizing our beef supply is a generational endeavor. Persistent drought, rising costs, and broader economic pressures have made rebuilding the herd increasingly difficult for many American cattle producers. While a 90-day policy window may provide meaningful relief right now, rebuilding the nation’s cattle supply cannot happen overnight. Cattle production operates on a years-long cycle, and creating lasting stability for producers and consumers will require sustained attention and a long-term commitment to American agriculture.
President Trump accurately identified the underlying crisis: the United States is operating with its smallest cattle herd in decades. Reversing that decline will require giving American ranchers the confidence and stability to begin rebuilding, particularly as Americans’ demand for beef remains strong. Today’s high prices reflect that fundamental imbalance, with demand continuing to outpace the available supply. That is why it is encouraging to see renewed attention on the health of America’s cattle industry and the need to rebuild our domestic herd.
It is particularly promising to see Mandatory Country-of-Origin Labeling (MCOOL) once again receiving serious consideration – and I strongly advocate for it. MCOOL can be an important part of strengthening American cattle production. Right now, as we look to imports to help meet demand, Americans should know where their beef was raised, giving them the ability to make an informed choice at the grocery store and intentionally support American ranchers.
Achieving sustainable beef prices will require a long-term vision that makes rebuilding herds a viable investment for American ranchers. That means creating more stable market conditions, strengthening independent processors, and expanding opportunities for American cattle producers to compete and thrive. Renewed attention to America’s beef industry creates an opportunity to address these structural challenges alongside the immediate need for consumer relief at the grocery store checkout.
At White Oak Pastures, where my family and I have spent decades building a vertically integrated, regenerative farming model, we have seen firsthand what long-term investment in American agriculture can make possible. Investing in local processing and domestic infrastructure has allowed us to build greater resilience into our operation while supporting jobs and economic opportunity in our rural community. Our model may not be right for every rancher, but one lesson has become clear over the years: if we want a stronger American beef supply, we have to invest in the people and infrastructure that produce it.
President Trump’s focus on making beef more affordable for working families is important, and the renewed attention on our beef supply is welcome. Trump Is Coming For Another Name On America’s Map

Apparently leaving your house costs $100 now.
Go to the grocery store? $100. Fill up the car and grab a few things on the way home? There goes another $100. Try to buy an actual house? Maybe don&#8217;t look at Zillow unless you&#8217;re emotionally prepared.
Americans don&#8217;t need another politician to tell them things are expensive. They have receipts.
But a new report from the Plymouth Institute for Free Enterprise at Advancing American Freedom (AAF) says there are ways to make life cheaper and, shockingly, none of them involve another trillion-dollar government spending package.
The report, “<a href="https://advancingamericanfreedom.com/memos/10-ways-to-improve-affordability-now">10 Ways to Improve Affordability Now</a>,” calls affordability the “#1 issue facing the American people” and has a pretty simple solution: Get government out of the way.
“The Left’s solution is redistribution — taking money from some to subsidize others,” the report says. “AAF’s solution is unleashing Americans by removing legal barriers to prosperity at every level of the economy.”
Translation: Stop trying to spend your way out of problems government helped create.
First up? Energy.
AAF wants America drilling by expanding oil and gas access, guaranteeing recurring federal lease sales offshore and in Alaska, and fighting state-level fracking bans.
Then there&#8217;s housing.
If you&#8217;ve looked at home prices lately and wondered whether your starter home is supposed to come with a starter trust fund, AAF has an idea: Build more of them.
The group wants to cut zoning red tape, make it easier to get certain projects approved, and tie federal housing aid to states actually doing something about restrictive zoning.
More houses. More supply. Hopefully, lower prices.
The report also wants Washington to stop making life harder for franchise owners and small businesses and make it easier for companies to invest in new factories and development.
And then there&#8217;s AI.
States are already fighting over massive new data centers and the energy needed to power them. AAF&#8217;s answer isn&#8217;t another government program. It&#8217;s fewer roadblocks. The group wants states to reject data-center moratoriums and loosen up energy markets so America can actually power the AI boom.
Not every recommendation is going to get automatic applause from conservatives though.
You know, tariffs.
AAF wants Congress to take that power back from the president, arguing that requiring lawmakers to approve tariffs would give businesses and consumers more predictable prices.
And then there&#8217;s Social Security.
The report warns that if Washington keeps kicking the can down the road, Americans could eventually be looking at an extra 5% payroll tax or a 22% benefit cut for every retiree.
AAF says start fixing it now instead of waiting until there are no good options left.
The group also wants to close a welfare loophole it says could save more than $100 billion through 2035, keep the government from capping credit card interest rates, and get rid of regulations that push Americans toward electric vehicles they may not even want.
Taken together, the 10 recommendations amount to a very different approach to the affordability problem than simply spending more money to offset higher costs.
AAF&#8217;s argument is that Washington can make life more affordable by removing government barriers that it says are helping drive up costs in the first place.

With Maine and Michigan on the rocks, Democrats are increasingly focusing on the American plains as an alternative path to win Senate control. 
Democrats are hoping that an overwhelmingly favorable political environment will put solidly red states that once seemed like pipe dreams in play. And they&#8217;re hoping that a staunchly Republican constituency — American farmers — could help put them over the edge amid economic struggles exacerbated by the Trump administration&#8217;s tariff regime. 
As things currently stand, Republicans are still favorites to hold Senate seats in Iowa and Nebraska. But prediction markets put their odds in the 60-70% range in each, close enough to cause some anxiety for the GOP. Democrats are even beginning to talk about Kansas, though that remains a greater longshot. Cook Political Report has moved Iowa into the &#8220;tossup&#8221; category, while Nebraska and Kansas are &#8220;Likely R.&#8221;
Nebraska and Iowa rank among the top five soybean-producing states in the country, and have traditionally sold over 50% of their crop to China. China responded to Trump&#8217;s tariffs with a 13% import duty for soybeans, leading Brazil to overtake the United States as China’s top soybean supplier last fall.
Farmers are also seeing rising costs for fertilizer. The global fertilizer index shows the wholesale fertilizer price has increased <a href="https://ycharts.com/indicators/fertilizers_index_world_bank">84.1%</a> in the last two years, worsening since the start of the war in Iran. 
A May 2026 Fox poll showed Trump’s support across rural America <a href="https://www.newsweek.com/donald-trump-approval-rating-rural-americans-farmers-11982592">slipping</a> into negative territory, driven by farm struggles. 
The farm economy has been under pressure. The American Farm Bureau reported that Chapter 12 farm bankruptcies rose 46% in 2025. Costs for fertilizer, seeds, and equipment are up.
Yet despite these challenges, many farmers remain supportive of Trump.
“As farmers because of tariffs we are hurting, however, for the long term if something doesn&#8217;t happen the country is going to fall,&#8221; one Nebraskan farmer told The Daily Wire. “He’s trying to make changes for the better.&#8221;
A farmer from southern Illinois echoed that sentiment. “I don’t think farmers are going to start voting Democratic. Under both the Biden and Trump administrations, we&#8217;ve dealt with low grain prices alongside higher diesel costs. Farmers have been squeezed by lower commodity prices and rising input costs. The difference today is that fertilizer costs are higher than they were under the last administration, but we’ve also received some relief through the Big Beautiful Bill’s Farmer Bridge Assistance Program. It’s not a cure-all, but it does help offset some of the pressure farmers are facing.”
The farmers’ views highlight the challenge facing Democrats. Farmers across the Midwest are experiencing real economic strain, but while the frustration is real, it has not translated into a mass movement towards the other side of the aisle. 
<a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/economics/farmers-iowa-struggling-trumps-economy-still-support-him-rcna345613">NBC interviewed</a> 13 Iowa farmers and found that while many were hurting from burdening rising costs, the majority said they don’t regret supporting Trump. 
“It’s going to get ugly for a while, but in the long run, it’s going to help us,” said one farmer. “Trump is the first president we’ve had in a long time that will stand up to China, because China just runs all over us.”
The tension between the tariffs and prices persists, though. Just last week, Trump announced he is allowing a massive increase of beef imports to try and bring prices down, upsetting some in the agricultural sector.
The White House argues that Trump&#8217;s policies are addressing the challenges farmers face. White House spokesperson Anna Kelly said, “President Trump is helping our agriculture industry by negotiating new trade deals, lowering input costs, bolstering the farm safety net, doubling the death tax exemption, ending taxes on rural property loan interest, creating rural opportunity zones, and more.”
The administration has also sought to communicate those benefits directly to producers. It launched &#8220;OnlyFarms,&#8221; a federal platform featuring an interactive map that allows farmers and ranchers to calculate projected savings from Trump&#8217;s agricultural agenda. Trump also invited hundreds of farmers and ranchers to the White House in March. Speaking from a balcony overlooking a gold-painted tractor, he assured attendees that they &#8220;once again have a true friend and champion in the Oval Office.&#8221;
Still, Democrats seem determined to expand the map to America&#8217;s heartland. Chuck Schumer has staved off the DSA insurgency and gotten moderate-presenting nominees in Iowa and Kansas, and in Nebraska, the party is backing an independent candidate to try and shirk the horrific brand of the Democrats. 
More battlegrounds mean a need for more money though, and an inconvenient fact remains for Democrats: the DNC is broke, and the RNC is flush with cash.
