Dr. Anthony Fauci refused to turn around and face some of the people who were hurt by the draconian regulations and lockdowns he pushed during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Fauci, on Capitol Hill for a Wednesday <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/fauci-faces-congress-as-explosive-diaries-take-center-stage?topStoryPosition=undefined&amp;author=Daily+Wire&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=0&amp;row=1&amp;rowHeadline=Top+Stories&amp;rowType=Top+Stories&amp;title=After+Fauci+Pleads+The+Fifth%2C+Rand+Paul+Makes+Contempt+Move">hearing</a> reviewing his statements and actions throughout the pandemic, spent most of his time refusing to answer questions — even those as benign as &#8220;what color is your tie?&#8221; — and invoking his Fifth Amendment rights. But under direct questions from Senator Bernie Moreno (R-OH), Fauci took things a step further and refused to even look at the people seated behind him in the gallery.
Moreno first asked if Fauci could identify his own attorney, who had just been kicked out of the hearing for repeatedly attempting to speak when he hadn&#8217;t been called on. &#8220;Who is David Schertler?&#8221; Moreno asked, and Fauci immediately invoked the Fifth Amendment — prompting Moreno to ask what the Fifth Amendment said.
Fauci, after a brief consultation with his attorney, did not answer but again invoked his rights.
Moreno went on to explain that Schertler previously represented disgraced former Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ) and was known as the guy to call &#8220;when you&#8217;re in deep sh*t.&#8221; Schertler represented Menendez&#8217;s campaign and his wife in 2023, who were the subjects of a Justice Department probe at the time.
Turning back to Fauci, Moreno asked, &#8220;Do you feel like you&#8217;re in deep sh*t?&#8221;
Fauci again invoked his Fifth Amendment rights.
&#8220;Clearly what you think today is that somehow you&#8217;re above reproach. Somehow you feel like you don&#8217;t need to be treated like a normal American,&#8221; Moreno said to Fauci, and then pivoted to address the audience. &#8220;Can you do me a favor, in the audience, and stand up if during the time of the COVID pandemic, you were called a &#8216;racist&#8217; for calling the virus the &#8216;Wuhan virus&#8217; or the &#8216;China virus,&#8217; if you thought the six-foot rule was total crap, if you thought the vaccine wasn&#8217;t something that you should take, if you thought it was outrageous the way the mask policy was rolled out, if you were fired from your job for not taking that vaccine — including members of the military — if you thought closing schools was catastrophically stupid, and &#8230; saying these things made you somehow a lesser human being.&#8221;
People in the gallery began to stand up in the rows behind Fauci — just two or three at first, and then more than a dozen were standing.
&#8220;Dr. Fauci, could you just turn and look at the people behind you?&#8221; Moreno asked. Fauci ignored the request and looked straight ahead. &#8220;You&#8217;re not willing to do that? It&#8217;s not a question. It&#8217;s not a question.&#8221;
One of Fauci&#8217;s lawyers tapped him on the shoulder then, and while he did turn to speak with the attorney, he kept his head low and pointedly did not look at the people standing behind him.
&#8220;To your lawyers, it&#8217;s not a question, it&#8217;s a request,&#8221; Moreno added. &#8220;All you have to do is look up from your lawyers and look at the people who were absolutely shamed for saying what we now know to be the truth. You can&#8217;t even look at them? That&#8217;s a question. Are you able to look at them?&#8221;
When Fauci still said nothing, Moreno told the audience members that they could sit. Fauci&#8217;s mic was off, but he could barely be heard repeating his invocation of the Fifth Amendment like a mantra as they sat.

One Democrat senator admitted to being &#8220;blinded&#8221; by his own political assumptions during the COVID-19 pandemic as Dr. Anthony Fauci repeatedly pleaded the Fifth Amendment during a Senate Committee hearing on Wednesday.
Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman confessed he regrets allowing political partisanship to influence his rejection of the &#8220;Right-wing theory&#8221; that COVID came from the Wuhan lab in China during the early days of the pandemic. Fetterman said the so-called lab leak theory, which was branded as a conspiracy by the legacy media, had “seemed to make sense,” but added that it “became a very partisan thing.” 
“Early on, there was the theory that the virus could have emerged from the lab, and early on that became like a ‘Right-wing&#8217; kind of theory and I thought it seemed to make sense,” said Fetterman. “Now there was a really advanced lab that was close by, and then you have this unknown virus out. But that became a very partisan thing, and now it seems now it&#8217;s a more and more emerging theory that it would have come from the lab.” 
Fetterman, who was uncharacteristically dressed in a suit at the hearing, said he hopes the next time America faces a crisis, it is not “blinded by the partisan idea that maybe the truth might come from a side that&#8217;s different that you are,&#8221; as he “might have been” blinded.  
&#8220;Americans should be willing to pursue truth no matter where that may have emerged,” said Fetterman.   
Fetterman was the lieutenant governor of Pennsylvania throughout the COVID pandemic and worked alongside Democratic Governor Tom Wolf and trans-identifying Secretary of Health Rachel Levine to implement some of the most draconian mitigation policies in the nation, including extended school closures and forcing senior citizens to die alone in nursing homes. 
Fetterman adamantly supported Wolf and Levine’s policies, including a <a href="https://lvb.com/dr-rachel-levine-issues-expanded-mask-wearing-order/">universal masking mandate</a> that required children as young as 2 years old to be masked whenever leaving home. He also <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/pittsburgh/news/fetterman-on-rising-coronavirus-cases-in-pa/">begged</a> Pennsylvanians to “just wear a mask” in a November 2020 video. Wolf implemented a <a href="https://www.pennlive.com/news/2020/12/no-more-indoor-dining-casinos-and-theaters-will-close-and-new-limits-on-retailers-pa-gov-tom-wolf.html">second lockdown</a> in Pennsylvania in December 2020 that extended to January 2021 and further devastated local businesses during the holiday season.   
Fetterman noted during the hearing that members of his family had died from COVID and also said he grieves for people who lost their businesses due to pandemic decisions and will “never be the same.”  
&#8220;During the pandemic I was lieutenant governor so we were in the middle of all of that maelstrom, trying to find the right balance between protect life and protect the economics of all of it,&#8221; said Fetterman. “I&#8217;m not sure if we got it all right or wrong, but without a doubt I continue to question myself.” 
Fetterman is an outspoken supporter of transgenderism and supports the inclusion of men in women’s sports. In a March 2025 post on <a href="https://x.com/SenFettermanPA/status/1896728606812028954?s=46&amp;t=ZAoIkqhiKpZyQayFV_2XbQ">X,</a> Fetterman wrote, “The small handful of trans athletes in PA in a political maelstrom deserve an ally, and I am one.”

Former Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary says the newly released diaries of Dr. Anthony Fauci echo doubts he formed about Fauci&#8217;s motives years before the COVID-19 pandemic.
Makary said in a resurfaced 2024 interview he &#8220;first became suspicious of Dr. Fauci and his motives&#8221; during the 2014 Ebola outbreak, when Fauci insisted on transferring a recovering nurse from Dallas to the National Institutes of Health, arguing the move was motivated by publicity rather than medical necessity. Makary said the transfer needlessly exposed others.
According to Makary, the patient was already receiving appropriate care under standard respiratory precautions, leaving no medical reason for the transfer, which he attributed to a publicity opportunity.
&#8220;There&#8217;s a room for respiratory precautions at every major medical center,&#8221; he explained. &#8220;It&#8217;s not like the respiratory precaution room at the NIH hospital is better than the respiratory precautions room at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.&#8221;
&#8220;And there&#8217;s nothing really to do, just supportive care,&#8221; Makary said. &#8220;They&#8217;re just watching her, so they&#8217;re doing basically nothing. They&#8217;re just letting her recover. And Fauci insists that they fly her up to the Clinical Center in Washington, D.C., from Dallas.&#8221;
As seen in the resurfaced clip from 2014, Fauci proudly announced the move of the Ebola patient during a congressional hearing in Washington, D.C., adding, &#8220;I&#8217;m sure you&#8217;ll hear about it soon in the press.&#8221;
&#8220;She will be coming to the National Institutes of Health, where we&#8217;ll be supplying her with state-of-the-art care in our high-level containment facilities, exposing countless people in the transport to Ebola,&#8221; Makary said, mocking Fauci&#8217;s actions. &#8220;Then Fauci puts on an astronaut suit along with a photographer and goes into this room where she&#8217;s recovering and they get a photo-op.&#8221;

Makary said that one of the photos went viral and the NIH subsequently held a press conference with Dr. Fauci. Makary said Fauci boasted about how all this care would be totally free of charge and that they never bill patients. Makary said one reporter memorably noted that the NIH is funded by taxpayers.
&#8220;One person, a reporter in the audience, astutely says, &#8216;Wait a minute, when you say it&#8217;s free, isn&#8217;t it funded by billions of taxpayer dollars?'&#8221; Makary recalled. &#8220;And you know, that kind of threw a monkey wrench into their argument.&#8221;
&#8220;All I can say is there is no clinical indication, there is no medical justification for transport here,&#8221; Makary added.

Anthony Fauci’s <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/faucis-personal-diary-highlights-shocking-contradiction-on-covid-fatality-rate">diary entries</a> reveal that he worked with Left-leaning officials to push for a delay of the COVID vaccine rollout and stymie President Donald Trump’s re-election bid.
In May 2020, Fauci expressed disapproval of Trump’s focus on the 2020 election, and <a href="https://www.paul.senate.gov/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/2026.07.24_Tonys-Diary-Package.pdf#&amp;_intcmp=fnc_politics_article_main-content_article-body_6_1">wrote</a>, “Trump getting out of control in pushing to open up the country and get the economy back before election day. He is desparate [sic]. This is all about re-election.”
In his June 20 entry, less than five months before the election, Fauci claimed that Trump’s plan of rolling out a vaccine quickly was rooted in his desire for re-election and he considered blowing &#8220;the whistle&#8221; on White House Coronavirus Task Force Deb Birx, who was also focused on a quick rollout.
“I am getting progressively disillusioned with [coordinator of the White House Coronavirus Task Force] Deb Birx,” Fauci wrote. “Deb has ststed [sic] that we should noit [sic] do clinical trials since ‘I want to see every infected person in a nursing home get plasma early on and steroids later. Forget the trial, we need to do this on EUAs [Emergency Use Authorizations].’ She says the same thing about vaccine trials. Clearly, she is trying to provide Trump with his October surprise. I may need to blow the whistle on her.”
In July, Fauci disdainfully wrote about former Chief of Staff Mark Meadows after Meadows publicly announced that vaccines would soon be rolled out, adding that Fauci’s lockdown protocols were not working.
“Mark Meadows on This Week with George Stephanopoulos saying [sic] that public health measures are not working and we will have to rely on interventions such as vaccines and therapeutics,” Fauci wrote. “This is his way of backing out of a failure and trying to get an &#8216;October Surprise.&#8217; Heads up for him trying to push an early approval of vaccine or even influencing the decision about convalescent sera, which actually do not look too good right now.”
The <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/new-fauci-diaries-reveal-celebrity-obsession-at-height-of-covid-crisis">diary</a> revelations come thanks to Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Rand Paul&#8217;s (R-KY) release of a trove of Fauci&#8217;s previously private writings ahead of Fauci’s expected testimony this Wednesday. The diaries appear to show that Fauci, the former top COVID adviser for President Trump and former President Joe Biden, misled Congress about the coronavirus fatality rate in the early days of the pandemic for both scientific and political reasons.
On July 27, 2020, the day that the Phase 3 trial of the Moderna mRNA-1273 vaccine was launched, Fauci met with the president and told him that the vaccine rollout would not take place until after the election. 
“It is clear he [Trump] wants therapeutics quickly,” Fauci wrote. “He accepted that the vaccine might not be ready before the election, but he was not happy about it. He kept pushing about when therapy would be ready.”
Fauci added that he was surprised that White House staff announced that convalescent plasma data was positive and could help bring about an early vaccine. 
“[I] Had no idea what they were talking about since we know that the plasma data are a mess and we are bringing in statisticians (independent) to look at the data,” Fauci wrote.
On July 31, Fauci recorded getting a call from Dr. Larry Horowitz, a Democratic health policy advisor who worked with former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA).
“Apparently, There was a meeting in the WH with Steve Mnuchin, Mark Meadows, Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schummer [sic],” Fauci wrote. “Steve and Mark told Nancy and Chuck that AstraZeneca will have [a] vaccine in September and that it will be given an EUA. Theyare [sic] talking about the ChADOX vaccine that Adrian Hill is testing in Brazil and South Africa, It is a 10,000 person trial.”
“Apparently, Peter Marks does not know anything about this and Larry just informed him,” Fauci continued. “Bottom line is that they are going to pressure Steve Han [sic] (who likely will cave in in the idea of an EUA) to issue one even though Peter has serius [sic] issues with this. An EUA will likely get in the way of completing the RCTs that are going on. Clearly. This is politically driven and will be a ploy for Trump to get reelected.”
On August 7, 2020, Fauci recorded another meeting with Horowitz, stating that he, along with other prominent scientists Dr. Francis Collins and Dr. Clifford Lane, would support Stephen Hahn, the commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, if Hahn blocked FDA approval of a vaccine. 
“He [Horowitz] had warned me a few days ago about Meadows trying to pressure Hahn and Marks to grant UA (or even BLA) prematurely to vaccines (likely AZ) in time for the election,&#8221; Fauci wrote. “I called Peter Marks a couple of days ago (together with Collins and Lane) and explained that we would back him if he holds the line. He called the AZ package &#8216;a hot mess’ and definitely not in shape for an EUA drive on Times Square.”
In an October 29, 2020, entry, Fauci continued to pressure regulators to take more time to approve a vaccine as the election neared.
&#8220;The FDA career scientists are hesitant to grant EUAs to Lilly’s and Regeneron’s mAb based on the current data. Alex Azar is really pushing them and furious because he thinks FDA is &#8216;slowwalking&#8217; the process so as not to have it out before the election in 5 days,&#8221; Fauci wrote. &#8220;Clearly, Alex wants to please the POTUS so that they can say that they have a breakthrough (similar to Convalescent plasma nonsense) right before the election. Azar then asked NIH (Collins), CDC (Redfield) and ASPR (Kadlec) to weigh in since the legislation that established the EUA process (dating back to the Anthrax situation in 2001) requires the CDC, NIH, and ASPR Directors to weigh in on EUA decisions (even though they have not done so in the past). Cliff and I had long conversation with Francis on his way down to HHS to discuss with Azar. We encouraged Francis to support the career scientists at FDA since they do not want to rush this through. They need more time to gather important information since what they have now is rather weak.&#8221;
Six days after Trump lost the 2020 election to Biden, Pfizer announced its 95% vaccine efficacy result. Horowitz then told Fauci that Trump “called up Steve Hahn today and told him that Alex Azar said that Steve lost the POTUS the election by holding up the news about the Pfizer vaccine.&#8221;
Justin Hart, author of &#8220;Gone Viral: How Covid Drove the World Insane,&#8221; <a href="https://www.rationalground.com/p/new-fauci-revelation-he-slow-rolled">wrote</a> that the diaries show &#8220;Fauci personally intervened with the FDA’s top vaccine regulator to encourage him to resist a pre-election authorization, and his intelligence on White House vaccine plans ran repeatedly through the office of the Speaker of the House — on July 31, August 7, August 8, and again in November.&#8221;

Diary Reveals Fauci Slow-Played Vaccine Rollout To Damage Trump

Case in point: Anthony Fauci.
Perhaps the best predictor of monstrously egotistical behavior is if you have a giant portrait of yourself in your house. And we now know that Fauci was a fame-obsessed publicity hound who was willing to use power to subvert the truth.
That&#8217;s not speculation. That&#8217;s reality, because Anthony Fauci kept a diary — consisting of 1,100 pages — and Rand Paul just dropped all of it.
A diary is where you write what you actually think, not what you tell the cameras. And what Anthony Fauci told the country and what he wrote in private turned out to be quite different stories.
In the list of motivations for human beings, ego is at the very top of the list. Ego is one hell of a drug.

Fauci&#8217;s personal diary contains entries running from late 2019 through Fauci&#8217;s retirement in December 2022. It has hundreds of articles about himself inserted into it; 641 entries are labeled “press” that are largely about himself.
As Tom Elliott <a href="https://tomselliott.substack.com/p/fauci-files-a-megalomaniacal-egomaniac">noted</a>:
<blockquote>The tone of what he preserved is worth registering. He kept the Washington Post column comparing a Rand Paul cross-examination of him to “watching Albert Einstein being disputed by his dry cleaner.” He kept the Joan Baez portrait and her calling him an American hero (p. 292). He kept the cookies from Joe and Jill Biden with the note “You are our hero” (p. 175), and Julia Roberts gasping on an Instagram livestream that he was her personal hero, and Marian Wright Edelman calling him “a true national treasure” (p. 1113), and Beth Cameron of the NSC texting that he was her hero for what he did with Rand Paul (p. 815).</blockquote>
That&#8217;s the kind of person that Anthony Fauci is and was.
A lot of the public indicators were there. In 2021, Fauci suggested that attacks on him were identical to attacks on science, saying on MSNBC, “A lot of what you&#8217;re seeing as attacks on me, quite frankly, are attacks on science, because all of the things that I have spoken about consistently from the very beginning have been fundamentally based on science. Sometimes those things were inconvenient truths for people, and there was pushback against me.”
Fauci used every opportunity to get in front of a camera. He had red-light syndrome like no one&#8217;s business. Do you remember that you couldn&#8217;t go to the ballpark during the pandemic, and there was no reason for that,  because it turns out that COVID did not travel in the open air. COVID was not being driven by outdoor exposure.
It didn&#8217;t matter. An entire baseball season was played without human beings in the stands, except for Anthony Fauci, who personally went to a Washington Nationals game where they piped in fake applause. He showed up wearing a mask, which he then took off during the game to talk to his friends in the stands.
He had the entire place to himself, but he threw out the first pitch. It was one of the worst first pitches in baseball history.
In his diary it is all ego, all the time.
Fauci, May 2020:

The entire Secret Service Corps is coming over to me and chatting. They let me into the first gate without even checking ID. Everyone is worried about my health and welfare, probably because it is all over the place that I am almost 80 years old.</blockquote>
It must be great to be Anthony Fauci.
If you sit there reading your press clippings all day, you&#8217;re doing your life wrong.
It turns out that Fauci knew pretty much all along that the origins of COVID were not related to a wet market; they were almost certainly a leak from the Wuhan laboratory. That was speculated early on by Tom Cotton of Arkansas, whereupon everyone on the Left, including the legacy media, jumped all over Cotton and suggested that it was a conspiracy theory to speculate as to whether the virus had come not from some weird guy eating a bat, but actually had come from the lab that did infectious disease studies on coronaviruses.
But as early as January 26, 2020 — before anyone even knew this was going to turn into a global pandemic — Anthony Fauci was writing in his diary that it almost certainly did not come from the wet market.
In March 2020, he bragged that he convinced everyone to shut down the country. He wrote, “When I left the White House and crossed Pennsylvania and 17th Street, several cars honked their horns and shouted &#8216;thank you&#8217; out the window.”
What a hero.
He then went out publicly and lied in July 2022, saying that he did not recommend locking anything down.
His diary explicitly says he did recommend locking things down.
Fauci was the bad guy. Not because bad guys know they&#8217;re being bad, but because they think they&#8217;re lying for a higher purpose. Fauci was lying because he thought that he was “doing the right thing” — that just happened to align with his personal interests, such as being on the cover of InStyle magazine, which actually happened; an 80-year-old doctor featured on the cover of InStyle magazine.
That&#8217;s who Anthony Fauci was.
It just goes to show you the foibles of human nature. I&#8217;ve said a thousand times, you try to attribute things to stupidity rather than malice, but it turns out that those two things can cross streams, &#8220;Ghostbusters&#8221;-style, and you end up with Anthony Fauci with outsized influence over policy.
This is one of the reasons our founders were big fans of federalism and checks and balances in the federal government.
Whenever anyone tells you what we actually need is a government that moves faster and hits harder and does things more quickly, I remind you, the government is staffed by lots and lots of people just like Anthony Fauci, because it turns out in life there are lots and lots of people like Anthony Fauci.

Dr. Anthony Fauci recommended White House adviser Stephen Miller move into a hotel for two weeks after his wife, Katie Miller, tested positive for COVID-19 while 10 weeks pregnant, according to newly released diary entries.
The entries were released Saturday by Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), who <a href="https://www.paul.senate.gov/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/2026.07.24_Tonys-Diary-Package.pdf">obtained</a> them during his investigation into the origins of COVID-19 and gain-of-function research ahead of Fauci&#8217;s planned testimony on Capitol Hill in the coming week.
&#8220;COVID-19 hits the White House!!&#8221; Fauci wrote on May 8, 2020. &#8220;Yesterday, it was revealed that the personal valet of the POTUS tested positive for Sars-CoV-2. However, today it was noted that Katie Miller tested positive. She was negative yesterday and positive X2 today!!!&#8221;
&#8220;She had sxs (sic) in the Sit room yesterday and sat next to Steve Hahn and behind Azar,&#8221; Fauci continued, listing a number of officials who had all attended the same briefing. &#8220;I was on the other side of the room from her, but she was coughing in the room. She sat next to Olivia Troye when she was coughing and, in the afternoon, yesterday, Olivia sat right next to me in the Ward Room of the West Wing for 45 minutes. In the room were Deb Birx, Steve Hahn, Bob Redfield, Tyler Ann, Seema Verma.&#8221;
Fauci went on to note that White House adviser Stephen Miller had tested negative even after his wife had tested positive — a relief for the White House chief medical adviser because he&#8217;d spent some time in close proximity to Miller.
&#8220;I spent much time on phone this evening advising Katie and Steve Miller as to what they should do,&#8221; Fauci continued. &#8220;She is 10 weeks pregnant. I advised that Steve must move out of the house into a hotel; he still has to self-isolate for 14 days. If he stays in the house, whether or not he gets infected, he still must self-isolate for 14 days after Katies (sic) tests negative. His clock will start after he separates from Katie and so he should start the clock now.&#8221;
Fauci explained that because he was a &#8220;low risk exposure,&#8221; he self-imposed a &#8220;modified quarantine&#8221; in which he would &#8220;get tested every day, would wear a mask ontinually (sic), and would spend most of my time either alone in my home office or alone in my NIH office and would go to White House or Congress with precautions of universal mask wearing and phycial (sic) distancing.&#8221;
He also noted that he was monitoring Katie Miller via phone, noting that she&#8217;d been very anxious about her health and that of her unborn child.
&#8220;She is very anxious about getting very ill since she is 10 weeks pregnant. Tonight she had an anxiety reaction. I calmed her over the phone. Her pulse Ox is fine and she is afebrile,&#8221; he wrote.
His other main concern was the fact that some of those who&#8217;d been seated close to Katie were not doing enough to mitigate the potential spread of the virus.
&#8220;Marc Short and others close to Katie really should do some sort of quarantine (even if modified), but they are not even wearing masks. Not a good metric,&#8221; he complained.

While publicly urging Americans to avoid family gatherings and maintain &#8220;social distance,&#8221; Dr. Anthony Fauci was also busy behind the scenes cultivating a chummy friendship with CNN anchor Jake Tapper.
Fauci&#8217;s meetings and family dinners with the longtime CNN personality were revealed in a series of <a href="https://www.paul.senate.gov/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/2026.07.24_Tonys-Diary-Package.pdf">diary entries</a> made public on Saturday by Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), who uncovered them during his lengthy and thorough investigation into Fauci and the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The former White House chief medical adviser thoroughly documented his actions throughout the pandemic — with a heavy focus on his own media appearances and coverage, particularly when it was overly flattering — and referenced an interview with Tapper that took place on April 12, 2020. During that interview, Fauci conceded that Tapper had asked tough — but reasonable — questions, and then had called him directly afterward to make sure that the interview had not caused him &#8220;any problems.&#8221;
&#8220;Potential big problem (we shall see). NY Times reporting on an answer to a question that I gave on CNN yesterday (see above). Jake Tapper asked me if we had closed down earlier, whould (sic) that have saved lives. I said it is complicated; he persisted and I said obviously, if you close earlier there would have been lives saved, but the decision was complicated,&#8221; Fauci wrote. &#8220;I could have answered the question better and with more clarity, but the Times is now saying that I was implying that the POTUS was to blame for additional deaths according to me. The far right is tweeting to fire me. The POTUS even re-tweeted the tweet that said to fire me. We shall see how the day goes &#8230;&#8221;
Fauci said that he later met with President Donald Trump, who said that he did not have an issue and business continued as usual.
Of the press briefing that followed, he said, &#8220;I went out and explained that I was being hoest (sic) in my answer to Jake, but that I was not implying that anyone was responsible for more deaths &#8230; Phone call with Jake Tapper. Jake wanted to make sure the interview did not cause me any problems.&#8221;
Later that month, Tapper spoke with Fauci about an interview he&#8217;d done with Coronavirus coordinator Deborah Birx. Of that exchange, Fauci wrote, &#8220;I was not on Sunday shows. Deb was on CNN with Jake Tapper and did not answer the question of whether it was a mistake for the POTUS to talk about injecting or swallowing bleach. Jake wrote me a text afterwards and said: “Birx has lost her way I fear. She has chosen to focus on defending the president and attacking the press. Odd.&#8221;
On May 4, 2020, Fauci referenced a CNN interview in which Tapper had been hard on the Trump administration&#8217;s &#8220;inadequate&#8221; response to the pandemic — but had spared him the ire reserved for the president: &#8220;Jake Tapper did a segment last night on the inadequate response of the Trump administration to the pandemic. I came out relatively well.&#8221;
Later that month, when Katie Miller, a spokesperson for Vice President Mike Pence, tested positive, and Fauci was directly exposed to SARS-CoV-2, he got a call from Tapper making sure that he was all right.
&#8220;Jake Tapper called me and asked whether I was going inot (sic) quarantine. I explained to Jake that I would do a “modified quarantine” since I was a low risk exposure to Kstie (sic). Thid merans (sic) that I will get tested every day, would wear a mask ontinually (sic), and would spend most of my time either alone in my home office or alone in my NIH office and would go to White House or Congress with precautions of universal mask wearing and phycial (sic) distancing. I tested negative yesterday and will get tested every day for 14 days and then 1 time per week,&#8221; he wrote, adding in a subsequent entry that Marc Short was not taking enough precautions.
&#8220;Marc Short (whom I resally (sic) like) practically sits on Katie’s lap and he is vey (sic) close to the VP. Yet he is not even wearing a mask. He actually should be self-quarantining. He was at a much greater risk than I.&#8221;
On July 1, Fauci mentioned a dinner with Tapper and his wife: &#8220;Had dinner over Jake Tapper and Jen Tapper’s home in DC. Terrific couple. Friendship building.&#8221;
By late July, Fauci was feeding questions to Tapper ahead of interviews with other officials: &#8220;Brett Giroir on Tapper (State of the Union) talking bullsh*t about testing with Jake pressing him. I gave Jake some questions to ask him.&#8221;
And Tapper was calling Fauci to complain about President Trump: &#8220;Jake Tapper woke me up at 11:23 AM (I went to bed early) furius (sic) at POTUS for tweeting about the fact that Jake severly (sic) questioned Brett Giroir on SOTU CNN show today. Jake was really pissed at the craziness of it all.&#8221;
In later entries — into the fall of 2020, as Americans were preparing to host holiday dinners via Zoom — Fauci mentioned another dinner at the Tapper home: &#8220;Had dinner at my home with Jake and Jennifer Tapper. Relaxed, good time. Jake clearly believes that Trump is totally nuts.&#8221;

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the former chief medical advisor to the president, appears to have misled Congress about the coronavirus fatality rate in the early days of the pandemic, making statements in private that contradicted his public testimony.
Senate Homeland Security Committee Chairman Rand Paul (R-KY) released a <a href="https://www.paul.senate.gov/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/2026.07.24_Tonys-Diary-Package.pdf#&amp;_intcmp=fnc_politics_article_main-content_article-body_6_1">trove of previously private Fauci diaries</a> ahead of his expected testimony this Wednesday before a key oversight committee. 
A February 8, 2020, journal entry shows Fauci recounting a phone call with former CDC Director Tom Frieden in which he compared the novel coronavirus to a &#8220;bad influenza&#8221; and predicted a lower-than-expected fatality rate.
The Daily Wire is publishing excerpts from Fauci’s journal without any edits or spelling corrections.
“Tom Frieden called me this AM and we discussed various aspects of the outbreak. He and I are on the same page in thinking tht this is acting like a bad influenza in its transmissibility and that the denominator is much greater than 34,867 (above) making the case fatality rate (CFR) more like 0.2-0.3 % rather than 2.0%,” he wrote. 
At that moment, Fauci estimated more than 34,000 infections and 724 deaths.  
About a month later, however, the physician — who privately blushed about his rising public profile — presented Congress with a markedly different assessment of the disease. <a href="https://docs.house.gov/meetings/GO/GO00/20200312/110713/HHRG-116-GO00-Transcript-20200312.pdf?utm_source=chatgpt.com">Testifying under oath</a> at a March 11 hearing, Fauci responded to a question from Rep. Michael Cloud (R-TX) about the similarities between COVID-19 and influenza.
“The seasonal flu that we deal with every year has a mortality of 0.1 percent. The stated mortality overall of this when you look at all the data including China is about three percent. It first started off as two and now three,” <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yp717hJVI5Y&amp;t=2810s">Fauci told the panel.</a> &#8220;I think if you count all the cases of minimally symptomatic or asymptomatic infection, that probably brings the mortality rate down to somewhere around one percent, which means it is 10 times more lethal than the seasonal flu. I think that is something that people can get their arms around and understand.&#8221;
During the hearing, Cloud questioned Fauci about whether COVID-19 was more lethal than previous diseases, including H1N1, commonly known as swine flu.
“No, absolutely not,” Fauci said. “The 2009 pandemic of H1N1 was even less lethal than the regular seasonal flu.” 
“I&#8217;m trying to help the American people know where to appropriately set their gauge,” Cloud fired back. 
Fauci doubled down on the alarm bells, despite privately downplaying the virus&#8217;s lethality.
“I think to set the gauge is that this is a really serious problem that we have to take seriously. I mean, people always say, &#8216;Well, the flu, you know, the flu does this, the flu does that.&#8217; The flu has a mortality of 0.1 percent,” Fauci said. “This has a mortality of 10 times that, and that&#8217;s the reason why I want to emphasize we have to stay ahead of the game in preventing this.”

Weeks later, hundreds of thousands of infections spread worldwide, and nearly 10,000 had died from the virus when Fauci penned the following journal entry on May 21, 2020. 
“Big front page article abut me appeared in the Washington Post. Very flattering. The situation with my national and international fame is explosive and really unimaginable. It is not hyoperbole to say that today I am the most famous and talked about person in the country and one of the most recognizable peson in the world,” Fauci wrote.

Dr. Anthony Fauci rejected questions about the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic and funding sent from the United States to the Wuhan Institute of Virology, saying that he was &#8220;wasting&#8221; time by addressing the concerns posed by members of Congress.
Fauci&#8217;s private thoughts were presented for public consumption when Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) — who was responsible for asking many of the aforementioned questions — published a number of diary entries he&#8217;d uncovered while investigating the former White House medical adviser.
Paul shared a lengthy thread on X, complete with screenshots of some of the most relevant diary entries, and added some of his own notes ahead of Fauci&#8217;s scheduled testimony before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee on Wednesday.

On July 7, 2021 — long after it was first posited in January of 2020 that a new coronavirus strain could have been leaked from the Wuhan lab, either intentionally or accidentally — Fauci wrote that he had actively encouraged members of the National Security Council to work with several &#8220;qualified&#8221;virologists to dig into the pandemic&#8217;s origins. Two of the four virologists he&#8217;d recommended to the NSC came out with a paper that same day arguing that the virus had occurred naturally.
On July 9, Fauci complained about &#8220;how many hours we are all wasting&#8221; taking questions about whether or not U.S. funding for the Wuhan lab had been used to conduct dangerous &#8220;gain-of-function&#8221; research that would have made the virus more deadly.
&#8220;It is important to point out how many hours we are all wasting in responding to the multiple letters from senators and congressmen fundamentally driven by conspiracy theories that the NIH has funded work at Wuhan institute of virology that led to SARS-CoV-2,&#8221; he wrote. &#8220;For example, over the weekend I was on multiple zoom calls with my staff fine-tuning the letters in response to the multiple questions.&#8221;
He referenced Paul as one of the senators asking questions, and then voiced surprise that he&#8217;d also received questions from Senator Richard Burr (R-NC) because &#8220;he generally is a friendly person to me.&#8221;

Fauci also recounted how U.S. Secret Service agents routinely waved him through the White House gates without asking to see his badge, often striking up casual conversations.
“Everyone is worried about my health and welfare, probably because it is all over the place that I am almost 80 years old,” he wrote at the time. 
About a month later, Fauci admitted to telling his counterpart, Dr. Deborah Birx, that the administration’s infamous contact tracing and isolation strategy to combat the virus was a “f*cking disaster and an abject failure.”
In the same journal entry, however, Fauci quipped about being invited to appear on &#8220;Dancing With The Stars.&#8221; 
The infatuation with television hits did not stop as the virus abated in parts of the country and red-state governors started reopening measures. In a June 29 meeting with then-Vice President Mike Pence, Fauci pleaded to get back on the big screens. 
“I told him that I am being blocked from TV and I needed to get on TV to give the ‘risk reduction” message and that I would avoid being pitted against him or the POTUS merely by not playing that game,” he wrote. “He did promise that he would get me out there on TV since he really liked my message. First time anyone ever spoke that way to VP. He truly likes me a lot (and vice versa).” 
“Now we have to get the POTUS press people to agree. Interesting intrigue in the White House. POTUS people versus VP people,” he added, suggesting internal divisions at the time over public relations strategy. 
In June, Sen. Paul announced that he issued a subpoena after Fauci allegedly backed out of an agreement to voluntarily appear. 
“Last week, Anthony Fauci notified us he will NOT voluntarily testify before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, even though he had previously agreed to do so,” Paul <a href="https://x.com/RandPaul/status/2069168695398588521">wrote on X</a>. “Therefore, today I have issued a subpoena requiring him to testify before the Committee, in public, next month.”

Paul indicated that lawmakers intend to question Fauci about several issues, including his presidential pardon, allegations regarding federally funded gain-of-function research, and accusations that records related to the government&#8217;s pandemic response were destroyed.
&#8220;I think there&#8217;s a lot to discuss,&#8221; Paul said.
The subpoena marks the latest chapter in one of Washington&#8217;s most contentious post-pandemic rivalries.
Throughout the post-COVID era, Paul <a href="https://www.hsgac.senate.gov/media/reps/senator-rand-paul-re-refers-dr-anthony-fauci-to-the-department-of-justice/">repeatedly</a> sparred with Fauci during Senate hearings, accusing him of misleading Congress about U.S.-funded research connected to the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China. Fauci consistently denied claims that the National Institutes of Health funded gain-of-function research that could have created the virus responsible for the pandemic.
As evidence supporting the lab leak theory gained credibility in recent years, Paul intensified his criticism, arguing that Fauci and other public health officials worked to dismiss legitimate questions about the virus&#8217; origins.
The Kentucky senator has previously called for Fauci to face criminal charges, <a href="https://thehill.com/policy/healthcare/5936032-rand-paul-subpoena-anthony-fauci-covid-19/">alleging</a> that he lied to Congress under oath regarding gain-of-function research funding. &#8220;We&#8217;ve been negotiating with him for material and for testimony. This has gone on for some time,&#8221; Paul said during a Tuesday interview. &#8220;He slow walked us and slow walked us. Finally agreed to come in voluntarily &#8230; then last week he says he&#8217;s not coming in.&#8221;
&#8220;With this subpoena power, we will bring him in, unless he fights this in court,&#8221; Paul added.
The move comes as congressional Republicans continue investigating the origins of COVID-19 and the federal government&#8217;s pandemic response, issues that remain politically potent years after lockdowns, vaccine mandates, school closures, and other emergency measures reshaped American life.
