A man won second place and raked in over $100,000 at the World Series of Poker Ladies Championship on Monday.
Aubrey Williams, a 31-year-old professional poker player who identifies as a woman, took home $129,692 for his runner-up finish, his first six-figure win in a tournament. He bested 1,475 other competitors until losing to poker champion Skye Chen after a three-hour match.
Williams is an accomplished poker player. He won the No-Limit Hold&#8217;em Monster Stack event in 2022, bringing home $6,604, and defeated Brock Wilson for a $19,219 prize pool at another tournament. He also won Borgata Winter Poker Open $1,000 Hybrid Championship, netting $52,540. 
Nevada gaming regulations authorize players based on legal identification, allowing Williams to play unrestricted in the woman’s category since his license labels him as a female.
Williams was blasted by some people online for “stealing” money from women with his second-place finish.

Williams brushed off the criticism he has received online, saying he doesn’t monitor social media and that nobody in the women’s competition was upset they had to play against him. He also denied having any ulterior motives in playing in the tournament.

Earlier this week, federal authorities arrested a Cuban operative who allegedly assisted far-Left activists, including Hasan Piker. The Trump administration now plans to deport the Cuban national.
The State Department revoked Carlos Antonio Lloga Dominguez&#8217;s immigration status after he &#8220;spent more than a decade working as a foreign subversive for the Communist Cuban regime’s premier influence and intelligence front group in the United States,&#8221; agency spokesperson Thomas Pigott said Wednesday. Federal authorities also nabbed Lloga Dominguez&#8217;s wife and son.
The Cuban national &#8220;spent more than a decade in the United States working for the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the People (ICAP),&#8221; a communist organization that Secretary of State Marco Rubio sanctioned in June over its ties to the Cuban regime, Pigott said.
&#8220;He has continued to maintain ties to the transnational communist subversion network throughout his time residing in our nation,&#8221; Pigott said.
The State Department describes ICAP as &#8220;the central node in a sprawling Cuban intelligence and influence operation, claiming to span more than 2,000 organizations across more than 150 countries,&#8221; adding that the group &#8220;has a long and intimate relationship&#8221; with Cuban intelligence officials.
ICAP&#8217;s current president Fernando González Llort served 15 years in an American prison for acting as a Cuban spy, according to the State Department.
Pigott added that the Marxist group has been complicit in “trafficking in vile anti-American propaganda, cultivating pro-Havana regime activists and politicians, and lobbying federal, state and local politicians on behalf of the Cuban dictatorship.” He said the group sought to use America’s Left-wing advocates to export Cuba&#8217;s communism.
“Under the Trump Administration, America will never become home for Cuban Communist regime thugs who peddle propaganda, run foreign influence operations, or seek to wage revolution against American civilization,” Pigott said.

ICAP worked with Left-wing nonprofits in the United States, including the People&#8217;s Forum, Progressive International, and Code Pink, to organize a convoy to bring supplies to Cuba that Piker joined in March, <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/rubio-sanctions-cuban-groups-ties-us-nonprofit-network-funded-communist-donor-neville-roy-singham" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fox News</a> previously reported.
Federal investigators began probing advocacy groups in the United States that have been lobbying, messaging, fundraising, and organizing with Cuban government officials, according to Fox News. As part of the investigation, authorities have reportedly been looking into Piker, Code Pink co-founder Medea Benjamin, and Code Pink D.C. coordinator Olivia DiNucci.
The Treasury Department issued administrative subpoenas to Piker and Benjamin requesting records related to their travel to Cuba, communications, and financial activity connected to the convoy, Fox News <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/doj-treasury-investigate-nonprofits-leaders-allegedly-coordinating-cuba-influence-campaign" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> in May.
During a Twitch stream, Piker <a href="https://x.com/Awk20000/status/2072463036129087592">denied</a> knowing Lloga Dominguez or ICAP.
“I don&#8217;t understand why they&#8217;re covering this as like the organization that sent Hasan Piker to Cuba,” he said.
“Bro, Trump is gonna put me in f*ckin&#8217; prison, I swear to God, what the hell is going on?” Piker said. &#8220;We&#8217;re about to hit f*ckin’ 1930s Germany if we haven&#8217;t already hit it and &#8230; these dumb f*cks on the Democratic Party side are still complaining about the people that the Trump admin is actively targeting, and they’re also taking advantage of that active targeting because they also don&#8217;t like us, great.”
In a <a href="https://x.com/bear_ing/status/2059257115223728408" target="_blank" rel="noopener">resurfaced</a> clip, Piker said a contact was communicating with the Cuban regime on his behalf to possibly organize a trip.
“The Cuban government actually hit my contact from the embassy and told them that ‘if the only thing stopping Hasan from coming to Cuba was the consistent internet access, we can make it happen.’” Piker said.

Two young men were injured in a double shooting in Washington, D.C., outside a gun violence prevention event at a local church.
The double shooting took place outside of Peace Baptist Church on 18th Street Northeast, just two miles from Capitol Hill, police <a href="https://www.fox5dc.com/news/2-men-shot-near-dc-church-holding-stop-violence-campaign">told</a> Fox 5 DC. 
The pastor of Peace Baptist was reportedly hosting a program to educate students on how to be gun violence prevention leaders when the shots rang out. The pastor said the two injured men were not affiliated with the church, and police have not released their identities or confirmed whether they took part in the summer jobs program near the church. Both men are expected to recover. Both men are expected to recover.
Washington, D.C., City Council member Wendell Felder stated on social media that he is working with the Metropolitan Police Department to apprehend the criminals and notify the community of the situation.
“I am deeply troubled by yesterday’s shooting near Peace Baptist Church. My prayers are with the two individuals who were injured, their loved ones, and everyone in our community who was impacted by this act of violence.” Felder <a href="https://x.com/CMWendellFelder/status/2071940279641293209">posted</a> on X. “It is particularly heartbreaking that this incident took place directly next to a youth gun violence prevention program. No one should have to fear for their safety while working to better themselves or attending community events.”
Police arrived on the scene shortly after the shots were fired and prevented the participants of the nearby summer youth employment program, most of whom were in their teens, from leaving the church for nearly two and a half hours, parents <a href="https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/2-men-shot-near-northeast-dc-church-housing-gun-violence-prevention-program/4123449/">told</a> NBC Washington. 
During those two and a half hours, officers reportedly went door-to-door asking for surveillance footage and tips about the potential suspects.
While searching the scene, police found a 16-year-old in the group carrying two backpacks that held two firearms. He was arrested and charged with carrying a pistol without a license, unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, and possession of a large-capacity feeding device. Police have not said whether the teen was connected to the shooting, which remains under investigation.
Electrician Jamil Davis was working outside a block away when he heard gunshots. 

“We heard the shots. The first was four, and probably about two seconds later, we heard a few more,” Davis <a href="https://www.instagram.com/reels/DaM7i7VDQY5/">told</a> WUSA 9. “I don’t understand the logic behind why this even happened. You got kids around there.”
“I just wanted to make sure there were no kids [harmed], because I had to deal with this a couple years ago, and the last thing I want to hear is somebody else losing a kid,” Davis added.

Chinese businessman, right-wing media mogul, and real estate tycoon Miles Guo has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for defrauding his followers of more than $1 billion. 
Guo, who also used the names “Ho Wan Kwok,” “Guo Wengui,” “Brother Seven,” “The Principal,” and “Boss,” was convicted of racketeering, securities fraud, money laundering, and defrauding donors and investors.
Guo’s federal judge, Analisa Torres, said on Monday that Guo had “preyed on people seeking to bring democracy to China,” causing them “substantial financial and emotional harm.”
His fraud schemes began when he lured donors into his Rule of Law Foundation and Rule of Law Society by falsely claiming he was contributing the first $100 million himself. He also released stock in his media venture, GTV, which gained scrutiny from the Securities and Exchange Commission. 
Guo was also involved in a scheme in which victims were told they could lend money to networks of Guo’s supporters and receive GTV stock and interest, a venture that allegedly netted him $100 million. He also sold $250 million in memberships to G|CLUBS, which also promised GTV stock but provided few tangible benefits.
Another fraud scheme Guo was convicted of was launching a cryptocurrency ecosystem called “Himalaya Exchange,” where people could trade “H Coin” and “H Dollar.” The court proceedings revealed that the cryptocurrencies were not based on a blockchain at all but merely numbers manipulated on an internal spreadsheet.
With the money he took from Americans and foreign investors, Guo reportedly bought estates in New Jersey and Connecticut, a $4.4 million Bugatti supercar, a $1 million Lamborghini, and a $37 million yacht, the Associated Press <a href="https://apnews.com/article/guo-wengui-chinese-businessman-fraud-9b8329c7ab8012f2dfa7c48c55fc5620">reported</a>.
“After immigrating to this country, rather than being satisfied with the many legitimate opportunities afforded to him, Guo exploited the trust that thousands had placed in him for his own greed,” U.S. Attorney Sean S. Buckley <a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-sdny/pr/miles-guo-sentenced-30-years-prison-leading-billion-dollar-fraud">said</a> in a statement. “This sentence shows that fame and wealth do not place you above the law, and that fraudsters who victimize families to enrich themselves will be met with significant consequences.”
Federal prosecutors likened the scale of Guo’s schemes to that of the famous fraudster Bernie Madoff.
Guo went from poverty to an estimated net worth of $2.6 billion by investing in real estate during the construction boom leading up to the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He was ranked as China’s 74th richest man and owned a sprawling $230 million lakeside courtyard in Beijing, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/03/30/us/guo-wengui-china.html">according</a> to The New York Times.
Guo secured majority control of a securities business by buying a stake in a state-owned company through Chinese senior intelligence official Ma Jian. However, when a Chinese campaign aimed at stamping out waste, fraud, and abuse jailed Ma, Guo realized he was at risk and fled China in 2015.
During his time in the United States, Guo made friends and connections in the American Right. He joined President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago golf club. He also partnered with Trump supporter Steve Bannon to launch anti-CCP ventures such as GTV Media and declared the New Federal State of China to be the self-proclaimed sovereign government of China. Guo also promoted Bannon’s podcast on his Chinese-language media network.
Guo’s network was the first to expose the Hunter Biden laptop scandal, the New York Times <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2026/06/29/us/guo-wengui-sentencing.html?unlocked_article_code=1.uFA.adnJ.ZGsOD1LAX7dG&amp;amp;smid=url-share">reported</a>. He also released a No. 1 iTunes hit song, “Take Down the CCP.”
Beijing welcomed the conviction of Guo.
&#8220;Guo Wengui is a fugitive wanted under an Interpol Red Notice issued at the request of the Chinese government,&#8221; Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun <a href="https://www.newsweek.com/guo-wengui-beijing-jailing-ccp-critic-trump-links-12140888">said</a> in a press briefing Tuesday.
Throughout the case, Guo has maintained his innocence, stating that he fled to the United States not to escape a fraud conviction but to “destroy the CCP,” according to an AP news <a href="https://apnews.com/article/guo-wengui-chinese-businessman-fraud-3deb06c17c5640a5d63f0e2c72286ac8">report</a>. 
Guo has insisted that his business dealings have harmed no one. His attorneys have stated that the conviction is part of the CCP’s “grand, pervasive, and life-threatening” pursuit of him and stated that Guo’s conviction would merely “embolden further efforts to eliminate Chinese dissidents from public life.”
Judge Torres said Guo’s assets will be liquidated, with the proceeds used to reimburse hundreds of his victims.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani compromised with City Council Speaker Julie Menin on the city’s $126 billion 2027 budget and has visibly left out accommodations for the city’s police force.
“We balanced this budget without resorting to austerity. We protected the services New Yorkers rely on, while restoring honesty to the City’s finances,” Mayor Zohran Mamdani <a href="https://council.nyc.gov/press/2026/06/30/3151/">said</a> in a statement. “We accelerated the affordability agenda by investing in housing, mental health services, parks, libraries, and students of all ages. This agreement proves that fiscal responsibility and public excellence can go hand in hand.” 
The Department of Education is expected to get the lion’s share of the budget, with $37.9 billion earmarked for the department. The Department of Social Services will receive $14.6 billion, compared to only $6.6 billion in funding for the Police Department.
The new budget gives $86.4 million to NYC immigration services that will resist Trump’s efforts to crack down on immigration, and $53 million for a $1,000 college voucher to every public school kindergartener, along with spending to renovate &#8220;cultural institutions.&#8221; No money was given to recruit officers into the NYPD’s ever-shrinking police force.
Mamdani backed away from his campaign promise to freeze New York Police Department staff levels, proposing to add 580 new officers. In response, about 50 officials and advocates, including Mamdani’s local Democratic Socialists of America chapter, came to City Hall to protest Mamdani’s turnaround.
The agreed-upon budget shows that the mayor has caved to activist demands to weaken the NYPD. 
The president of the NYPD’s largest uniformed union, the Police Benevolent Association (PBA), stated the anti-police protesters are not “living in reality” and wished the mayor had kept to his new decision to hire more police officers.

The Comptroller’s Office <a href="https://comptroller.nyc.gov/newsroom/press-releases/nyc-comptroller-levine-releases-new-report-on-persistently-high-nypd-overtime-costs-proposes-reforms-to-improve-oversight-and-controls/">found</a> that $26.4 million was spent on overtime, with police officers having to be dispatched to planned events, such as &#8220;parades, details, and quality of life initiatives,&#8221; and hopes to arrange staff schedules to mitigate the overtime. 
New York has <a href="https://www.nyc.gov/site/nypd/news/PR006/nypd-fewest-murders-shooting-incidents-recorded-history-first-three-months-the">announced</a> the fewest murders and shooting incidents in the first quarter in recorded history. Year-to-date, New York City <a href="https://www.nyc.gov/site/nypd/stats/crime-statistics/citywide-crime-stats.page">reports</a> 20.9% fewer murders and 18.8% less retail theft. This is reportedly due to the NYPD’s data analysis that targets problem areas in the city. This service costs the city $300 million annually, and there was no mention of increasing its budget in the 2027 proposal.
On the campaign trail, the mayor promised to create a $1.1 billion Department of Community Safety that would take over the task of answering mental health-related 911 calls from the NYPD, and has since launched a smaller $260 million Mayor’s Office of Community Safety, the New York Post <a href="https://nypost.com/2026/06/25/us-news/activists-rip-mamdani-for-boosting-nypd-headcount-breaking-police-crackdown-campaign-pledge/">reports</a>.
Mamdani and Menin were gridlocked in a debate for the past week about whether to expand access to the City Fighting Homelessness and Eviction Prevention Supplement (CityFHEPS) program, the New York Post <a href="https://nypost.com/2026/06/30/us-news/mamdani-nyc-council-reach-handshake-deal-on-colossal-125b-budget-without-nypd-expansion/">reports</a>. 
Mamdani, pragmatically aware of the budget constraints and bipartisan national scrutiny, opted to take a fiscally conservative approach and not expand access. Menin, a moderate Democrat, took the approach that the CityFHEPS program should be expanded to people at risk of eviction, even if it costs the city $3 billion to $4 billion extra per year, the New York Times <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2026/06/29/nyregion/budget-mamdani-housing-cityfheps.html">states</a>.
“The CityFHEPS rental assistance program is a lifeline for 65,000 of the most vulnerable New Yorkers — but it could and should be serving thousands more,” Menin <a href="https://x.com/speakermenin/status/2070596039867047963?">said</a> in an X post.
Councilwoman Julie Won called Mamdani’s position “a deep betrayal to New Yorkers in the system looking for support to restore their lives,” and <a href="https://nypost.com/2026/06/29/us-news/mayor-zohran-mamdani-city-council-deadlocked-on-nyc-budget-deal/">joined</a> Menin in pressuring the mayor, according to the New York Post. 
 
The new budget shows Mamdani has expanded the funding of FHEPS by $125 million to her proposed $300 million allocation. Now families who earn half the median area income would be able to apply to CityFHEPS, moving the limit for a family of three from $54,000 to up to $76,000.
Former mayor Eric Adams also resisted the CityFHEPS expansion, vetoing the proposed legislation and suing the city council when they overturned the veto.

“Our government should serve the public with integrity. Any corruption would amount to a serious violation of responsibility within the NYPD and a breach in public trust. Commissioner Tisch has already shown a real commitment to cracking down on corruption and ensuring that the public servants in the NYPD are held to the highest standards,” Tisch said.

The Department of Justice has confirmed to The Daily Wire that it has launched a grand jury investigation into leftist megadonor Neville Roy Singham, who has been accused of promoting Chinese Communist Party interests.
A federal grand jury in Manhattan issued subpoenas on behalf of an investigation led by U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton and authorized by Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, Fox News <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/doj-launches-grand-jury-probe-marxist-mogul-neville-roy-singhams-funding-leftist-groups">reported</a> on Monday. The subpoenas reportedly seek financial records tied to Singham and his network. Singham recently funneled $285 million from his accounts in China to Left-wing organizations in the United States through the Goldman Sachs&#8217; philanthropic entity, the GS Donor Advised Philanthropy Fund for Wealth Management.
Prosecutors are reportedly examining whether Singham engaged in wire fraud, money laundering, or any other financial crimes, or acted as an unregistered foreign agent on behalf of China. The investigation is part of the Trump administration’s efforts to crack down on fraud in nonprofits, political organizations, and government-backed entities. 
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has also met with Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon to discuss Singham and the recent investigation, according to the outlet. Bessent allegedly warned the bank that they could also be investigated for their past connections with the CCP and their account with Singham.
Singham is connected to organizations such as the People’s Forum, Party for Socialism and Liberation, and Code Pink. His wife, Jodie Evans, is a leftist activist who co-founded the radical anti-war organization Code Pink. Lawmakers have also alleged that Singham was affiliated with the Maku Group, a CCP-backed propaganda organization.
Singham has been a Communist ever since his youth, when he took membership in the League of Revolutionary Black Workers, a Mao-influenced group based in Detroit, Michigan, the New Lines Magazine <a href="https://newlinesmag.com/reportage/the-big-business-of-uyghur-genocide-denial/">reported</a>.
Singham used America’s capitalist system to gain his wealth. After college at Howard University, Singham founded Thoughtworks, a consulting and software firm, which he sold to a private equity firm in 2017 for $785 million.
In a viral clip <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/video/6391402983112">posted</a> by Fox News Digital, Singham argued to Chinese officials that America and Britain were not the heroes in World War II.
“This fascist lie that the West says that there is a battle between fascism, democracy and communism. They make a fake argument that there are three systems,” Singham stated. “In fact, fascism is actually a face of capitalism and imperialism, as is colonialism. These are three faces of a system that quite now is getting very, very dangerous for us.”
Singham also argued that the Soviet Union and China were the real heroes of WWII.

Mexican authorities are searching for a mysterious vigilante dubbed the “Batman of Lagos de Moreno” after several suspected motorcycle thieves were found bound to lampposts.

Though no suspects have been arrested in connection with the incidents, officials said they are tracking two cars believed to be involved. Police are investigating the assaults on the bound men while also reviewing accusations that they were involved in motorcycle thefts.
Authorities have not said whether they believe a single person is acting alone or whether others may be involved. 
The unusual case has drawn attention as Mexico continues to fight organized crime, cartel violence, and to deal with police corruption.
Frustration with crime and distrust of law enforcement have fueled a rise in vigilantes in parts of Mexico. Earlier this year, armed women in the nearby state of Michocoán were reported patrolling their communities to protect residents from cartel violence. 
Motorcycle theft remains a recurring problem in the Altos Norte region of Jalisco, where Lagos de Moreno is located. The United States has <a href="https://travel.state.gov/en/international-travel/travel-advisories/mexico.html">issued</a> a Level 3 crime warning for the state of Jalisco, advising Americans to “reconsider travel” in the area.

Hyderabad, the capital of the Indian State of Telangana, has honored President Donald Trump by naming a road after him.
Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and U.S. Ambassador to India Sergio Gor dedicated Donald Trump Avenue on Tuesday. The road is adjacent to the U.S. Consulate and is located in the city’s financial district. The avenue&#8217;s name was unveiled during an American 250 celebration in the Indian state.
Trump <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/116818236347869022">expressed</a> his approval of the new road on Truth Social, saying, “The new Donald Trump Avenue in Hyderabad, India — The first U.S. President to ever be honored in this way. Thank you!” 
At the annual US-India Strategic Partnership Forum, Reddy proposed naming roads in Hyderabad after major corporations and world leaders as part of an effort to position the city as a center of Indian innovation, the Deccan Herald <a href="https://www.deccanherald.com/india/telangana/india-gets-road-named-after-us-president-us-ambassador-sergio-gor-unveils-donald-trump-avenue-plaque-in-hyderabad-4049773">reported</a>.
Ambassador Gor praised Hyderabad for having “prominent” partnerships with the United States on a “high-speed trajectory” that promises to bring commerce and investment to the United States.
“With our interim trade agreement and Mission India on track to bring over $20 billion of new investment to the United States, we are proving that America First does not mean America alone,” Gor stated. “We are deeply grateful to the Government of Telangana for the generous tribute of Naming Donald Trump Avenue, a gesture that reflects the kind of strong, respectful partnership President Trump has championed for America.”
Telangana is governed by the center-left Indian National Congress, the political party that was once led by Mahatma Gandhi. Trump’s celebration of Donald Trump Avenue angered members of Prime Minister Narendra Modi&#8217;s right-leaning Bharatiya Janata Party, Reuters <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/india/indian-tech-hub-names-road-trump-drawing-criticism-modis-party-2026-06-24/">reports</a>.
The Communist Party of India also criticized the new name, calling it &#8220;outrageous&#8221; and petitioning to have the avenue’s name changed.

Darializa Avila Chevalier, the Democratic Socialist who just beat moderate leftist Adriano Espaillat in the New York primaries, has run on a platform of resistance to New York’s profit-seeking landlords. However, a recent investigation just exposed her father as one of them.
Public records show that her father Frank Avila, whom Chevalier claimed was a humble truck driver, had enough money to purchase a condominium in Miami in 1998 for $92,900, the New York Post <a href="https://nypost.com/2026/06/25/real-estate/darializa-avila-chevaliers-father-is-a-landlord-in-miami/">reports</a>. This is about $193,000 in today’s dollars. 
Similar units in the complex now average around $375,000, which means that her father has had a fourfold return on his apartment investment. This does not include the revenue her father receives from the apartment’s tenant.
July 2025 records also show him taking a loan off the apartment complex, a traditional tactic New York landlords perform.
Avila Chevalier ran a populist campaign centered on limiting market-rate housing and fighting &#8220;corporate greed,&#8221; and once reposted a proposal on social media calling the government to “seize all properties from landlords.” 

Chevalier has also argued that New York has given real estate too much to the free market, which erodes the identity of long-established, working-class neighborhoods.
“In Congress, she’ll take on corporate greed, bad landlords, and D.C.’s broken political system. At a time when power is concentrated in fewer and fewer hands, Darializa will fight in Congress for New York City’s working families,” her platform read. “She’s the champion we need for a city New Yorkers can actually afford.”
Chevalier has argued that houses that are owned are kept in land trusts that limit how much landlords can own, though her father’s property is in no such land trust. 

“[We should be] making sure that we are pushing back on bad landlords, making sure that we are also creating pathways to homeownership, investing in community land trusts and HDFCs, and making it so that people can actually stay in the city that they helped build,” she <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2026/06/01/politics/kfile-ny-13-darializa-avila-chevalier-deleted-tweets-defund-abolish-police-prisons-deportations">told</a> CNN.
Chevalier has not publicly spoken about her father’s property or mentioned his status as a landlord.

The Minneapolis board agreed on a proposal to repeal the ban on commercial sex venues — like bathhouses — on Thursday, just days before the Twin Cities Pride Festival.
The nine members who voted for the proposal are all Democrats, but some are affiliated with the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party (DFL) and the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).
Democrat Elizabeth Shaffer, one of the two dissenters, said she had decided to vote against the policy after hearing concerns from her constituents, and <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/minnesota/news/minneapolis-city-council-adult-bathhouse-vote/">added</a> that since the city is  expecting a budget shortfall,  &#8220;I don&#8217;t think this is a top priority for expanding city services.&#8221;
The bathhouses were banned in Minneapolis in 1988 during the height of the AIDS epidemic because of the link between homosexual activity and the spread of the virus. 
The advocacy group Action Network, which was one of the major organizations that pushed for lifting the bathhouse ban, <a href="https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/repeal-the-ban-on-bathhouses">said</a> that the ban actually inhibited public health because it “has driven sexually-related gatherings underground, often to unsafe and inaccessible spaces.”
“Social science research tells us that commercial sex spaces, like gay saunas, are important for promoting safer sex practices, enhancing HIV prevention, and increasing access to testing and treatment,” the Action network added. “These spaces also enhance feelings of identity, camaraderie, authenticity, and belonging.”
Socialist council member Jason Chavez, who co-authored the repeal, said that he knows “as the only out LGBTQ+ person on this council” that the ban was mired in “homophobia.”

This repeal of the bathhouse ban follows the “Pride in Policy” package Minneapolis has passed to show support of its LGBTQ residents. This package includes updating city codes with more “gender inclusive” language and “a study on how to expand all-gender restrooms across the city,” ABC News <a href="https://kstp.com/kstp-news/top-news/minneapolis-council-votes-to-lift-38-year-ban-on-adult-bathhouses-and-sex-venues/?utm_campaign=snd-autopilot&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter_KSTP">reports</a>. Additionally, Minneapolis is updating its public indecency laws to be more LGBTQ-inclusive.
The Council must follow up this repeal on bathhouses to lay down zoning and safety regulations. Other Minnesota cities like Duluth and St. Paul already allow commercial sex venues on varying levels of oversight.

On Thursday, Rep. Brandon Gill (R-TX) interrogated nutrition awareness advocate Gina Plata-Nino about Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) dollars covering sugary drinks and her organization’s conflicts of interest with food companies.
Plata-Nino is the SNAP director at the Food Research and Action Center, according to the organization’s <a href="https://frac.org/news/plataninosnapdirectornov2025">website</a>, and her job is to “wield her expertise to raise awareness about the importance of SNAP in helping tens of millions of families put food on the table.”
At a hearing for the House Subcommittee on Delivering on Government Efficiency, Gill <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tTMCoa6rq4c">asked</a> Plata-Nino whether taxpayer dollars should be used to buy sodas. She replied, “Taxpayers&#8217; money should be utilized to ensure that individuals have access to the food that they need to survive.&#8221;
“Do they need sugary sodas to survive?&#8221; Gill asked.
“Some of them do, who have low blood [sugar] issues, who may have kidney issues,&#8221; Plata-Nino responded.
&#8220;Is that right? You think they need Coca-Cola to survive? &#8230; Do you think that&#8217;s the most appropriate use of our tax dollars?” he asked.
“I am not a physician but medical records and expertise do show that in some circumstances,&#8221; Plata-Nino said.
“You were just citing the health needs, apparently, of the American people,” Gill said. “So, do the American people need Coca-Cola to survive?”
After a brief pause, she responded, &#8220;I did not say that,” adding, “I will not answer for individuals and their choices.&#8221;
He pressed Plata-Nino again, “I think most people can rationally say you don&#8217;t need Coca-Cola to survive. Wouldn&#8217;t you agree?&#8221;
She dodged Gill’s question, saying, &#8220;I agree that we have a hunger crisis and that we need to address it, ensuring that individuals have the food resource that they need.&#8221;
Gill then had Plata-Nino state what SNAP stands for: Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, and then asked what is nutritional about Coca-Cola.
“I am not a nutritionist,” she replied. “I am a food security expert in ensuring that individuals have the food resources that they need.”
He denied the need for expertise, saying, “This is a common sense question, and all of these have been common sense questions. I’m just asking you — is there a nutritional value to sugary sodas? It’s a yes or no question.”
“I’m not an expert. I will have to look at the dietary guidelines,” Plata-Nino said.
“Are you that ideologically dug in that you want our tax dollars paying for sugary sodas, that you will not, in a straightforward way, admit that sugary sodas are not healthful for the American people?” Gill said. “A lot of our tax dollars are spent on soda, which is why I’m asking about it &#8230; Do you believe that perhaps drinking sodas every day is healthy?”
“The worst health outcome is hunger,” Plata-Nino declared. 
“Do you satiate hunger with Coca-Cola?” he asked.
“I did not say that,” she said.
He then moved his questioning to asking about her Food Research and Action Center’s funding.
“Is your organization funded by soft drink makers?” Gill asked.
“I am not in charge of development, but no,” Plata-Nino said.
“Is your organization funded by organizations that make money from food stamps?” Gill questioned.
“I can’t comment to that,” she replied.
“Does General Mills fund your organization?” he said.
“I don’t have access to that information,” Plata-Nino replied. 
“I do, it’s right here,” Gill stated, holding up a paper from FRAC’s website <a href="https://frac.org/about/frac-supporters">listing</a> General Mills, along with major soda retailers such as  Amazon, Instacart, National Co-op Grocers, Albertsons Companies Foundation, and the Walmart Foundation, as their sponsors. “They do fund your organization. Do they profit off of food stamps?”
“Retailers are the major beneficiaries of [our organization],” she confessed.
“Do you think that’s a conflict of interest? &#8230; They’re profiting off of your advocacy,” Gill declared.
Plata-Nino remained visibly silent, refusing to affirm whether funding of General Mills was a &#8220;conflict of interest.”
The congressman smiled and concluded his time, saying, “I think that most people think that’s a conflict of interest. I know you don’t want to answer.”
The subcommittee later <a href="https://oversight.house.gov/release/hearing-wrap-up-snap-integrity-is-undermined-by-waste-fraud-and-abuse/">said</a> in a statement that the hearing had found that “SNAP integrity is undermined by waste, fraud, and abuse.”
The Trump administration has recently been focused on preventing abuse of SNAP dollars to fund unhealthy lifestyles. Citing <a href="https://epicforamerica.org/social-programs/here-is-what-food-stamp-recipients-buy/">evidence</a> from the Economic Policy Innovation Center that soda is the #1 product bought with SNAP dollars, the Trump administration has allowed five states to block SNAP money from buying candy and sugary drinks, a policy that an Obama-appointed judge <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/snap-benefits-soda-candy-ban-judge-ruling/">ruled</a> unconstitutional Tuesday.

Gracie the Giraffe, who set the internet ablaze when she disappeared for almost two weeks in the Texas desert, was found Friday morning during an aerial helicopter search.
Vick Jones, who is the manager of the ranch from which Gracie escaped, participated in a helicopter scouting mission with Jeff Hill of Concho Aviation around 6:45 AM on Friday. While they were aloft, Hill spotted Gracie roughly four miles south of Cedar Hollow Ranch, according to a report from the Real County Sheriff&#8217;s Office.
&#8220;She&#8217;s standing. She&#8217;s very calm. She looked good,&#8221; Jones <a href="https://www.chron.com/wildlife/article/gracie-giraffe-found-texas-22322094.php">said</a>. &#8220;There&#8217;s a lot of water there, a lot of food, stuff like that. She&#8217;s looking good, doing good.&#8221;
Others who had taken part in the extensive search for Gracie expressed similar elation upon finding the elusive giraffe.

As the Daily Wire previously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/pet-giraffe-goes-missing-in-texas?row=0&amp;elementPosition=1&amp;rowType=Web+Search+Overlay">reported</a>, Gracie, a 4-year-old reticulated giraffe with rounded ears, escaped Cedar Hollow Ranch in Real County, Texas. Cedar Hollow Ranch is a private exotic animal breeding facility that is home to hundreds of animals, including Nubian ibexes, antelope, impalas, and other animals native to Africa and the Middle East.
The giraffe reportedly vanished after feeding on an isolated hillside, finding an unfenced area opposite an 8-foot-tall gate. Jones <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2026/06/23/us/gracie-giraffe-texas-missing.html">said</a> the giraffe would walk around the ranch “like none of the others did,” adding that Gracie would often go to secluded areas and “eat on the tree limbs.”
Reticulated giraffes around Gracie’s age are about 14-16 feet tall and can run up to 35 mph in short bursts, according to the <a href="https://www.denverzoo.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/Reticulated-giraffe.pdf">Denver Zoo</a>. The species of giraffe is <a href="https://www.iucnredlist.org/species/88420717/88420720">listed</a> as endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources’ Red List.
