Ohio Republican Sen. JD Vance will leave his Senate seat when he becomes vice president on January 20, giving Republican Gov. Mike DeWine the responsibility to appoint a replacement until a special election is held in 2026.
Ohio went red in the 2024 election, giving Trump an 11-point win over Vice President Kamala Harris. Longtime Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown also lost his re-election bid this year to Republican Bernie Moreno, giving the GOP both Senate seats in the state. Now, with Vance&#8217;s seat opening up, numerous Republicans are being floated as potential replacements.
<h3>Frank LaRose</h3>
Ohio Republican Secretary of State Frank LaRose is a favorite among the state&#8217;s Republicans to replace Vance. LaRose made headlines in the past year for <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ohio-secretary-of-state-orders-removal-of-nearly-500-non-citizens-from-voter-rolls" target="_blank" rel="noopener">leading an effort</a> to clean up Ohio&#8217;s voter rolls ahead of the 2024 election, including purging hundreds of non-citizens from the rolls. LaRose has served as Ohio&#8217;s secretary of state since 2019. Before that, he was a member of the Ohio State Senate. LaRose ran for Senate in 2024 but lost to Moreno in the Republican primary.
<h3>Jon Husted</h3>
Ohio Lieutenant Gov. Jon Husted has served in that position since 2019. He has long been a major player in Ohio politics, serving as the Ohio secretary of state from 2011 to 2019, and the Speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives from 2005 to 2009.
Husted also pushed hard to secure Ohio&#8217;s elections, saying he wanted to make it a state where it is &#8220;both easy to vote and hard to cheat.&#8221; After taking office as secretary of state, Husted switched voting rules to make early voting hours uniform across the state instead of allowing county boards of elections to set their own hours.
Husted appears more likely to run for governor than for the Senate in 2026, and he has already received DeWine&#8217;s <a href="https://www.ideastream.org/2024-11-11/ohios-2026-race-for-governor-may-be-part-of-dewines-us-senate-choice" target="_blank" rel="noopener">endorsement</a> for the position. &#8220;Based on my six years working with him, he will be a great governor,” DeWine said earlier this month.
<h3>Jim Renacci</h3>
A Republican rival of DeWine, former Congressman Jim Renacci would be an unlikely appointment, but he could campaign for the 2026 special election. Renacci challenged DeWine in 2022, regularly criticizing the Ohio governor. He <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2022/05/03/us/elections/results-ohio.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">lost</a> to DeWine in the Republican primary by 20 points. Renacci also mounted a U.S. Senate campaign in 2018, winning the Republican primary before losing to Democrat Sherrod Brown in the general election.
Before he was elected to Congress in 2010, Renacci was a successful businessman, owning multiple dealerships in the Columbus area. In Congress, he served on the House Ways and Means Committee and the House Budget Committee.

<h3>Matt Dolan</h3>
Ohio Republican state Senator Matt Dolan has thrown his hat into the ring for a U.S. Senate twice in the past three years, falling short in Republican primaries in 2022 and 2024. Dolan is the son of Larry Dolan who owns the Cleveland Guardians (formerly Cleveland Indians) of the MLB. Dolan was given a partial stake in the franchise in 2000.
Dolan is also a partner at the law firm of Thrasher, Dinsmore &amp; Dolan and the vice president of 7th Avenue Properties, managing businesses and real estate properties. Dolan could have an edge over others in seeking DeWine&#8217;s appointment. In the 2024 Senate election, he was endorsed by DeWine while Republican Bernie Moreno, who went on to win the election, was endorsed by President-elect Donald Trump.
<h3>Dave Joyce</h3>
Republican Congressman Dave Joyce is currently serving his sixth term in the U.S. House after first being elected in 2012. Before Congress, Joyce worked as a public defender and was later appointed prosecutor of Geauga County, Ohio, to the east of Cleveland.
Earlier this year, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) appointed Joyce to serve on the task force investigating the July 13 assassination attempt on Trump. Joyce <a href="https://joyce.house.gov/posts/joyce-selected-by-speaker-johnson-to-serve-on-bipartisan-task-force-to-investigate-the-attempted-assassination-of-president-donald-trump" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> he would &#8220;work diligently to uncover the facts, demand accountability, and ensure these security failures are prevented from happening in the future.&#8221;
<h3>Warren Davidson</h3>
Warren Davidson, another Ohio Republican congressman, has been floated for the Senate seat. Davidson served as a U.S. Army infantryman, where he was stationed in Germany. He later earned an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point and graduated near the top of his class.
Davidson also owned and operated manufacturing companies in Ohio for 15 years before he was elected to the House in 2016.
<h3>Jane Timken</h3>
Attorney and former Ohio Republican Party Chair Jane Timken is at the top of the list of people DeWine is considering for the appointment to the Senate, according to <a href="https://ohio.news/articles/mike-dewine-reportedly-considering-donor-jane-timken-for-senate-seat" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ohio.news</a>. Timken served as the head of the Ohio GOP from 2017 to 2021 and then ran for Senate in 2022. Despite boasting the endorsement of outgoing Sen. Rob Portman in 2022, Timken finished in fifth place in the Republican primary.
<h3>Mike Carey</h3>
Rep. Mike Carey (R-OH) has thrown his name in the mix for Vance&#8217;s seat, telling <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/ohio-congressman-vying-replace-jd-vance-senate-says-trumps-agenda-must-priority-day-one" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fox News</a> earlier this week that Trump &#8220;needs somebody in the Senate that will make sure that we get his agenda through.&#8221; Carey has been in Congress since 2021, where he has prioritized fighting for tax relief, housing affordability, and energy independence.
Before his time in Congress, Carey was an executive for a large privately owned energy company.
<h3>Mehek Cooke</h3>
Republican attorney Mehek Cooke is also being considered by DeWine, according to <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/new-candidate-emerges-crowded-field-as-possible-replacement-vances-ohio-senate-seat" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fox News</a>. Cooke was a political and legal surrogate for Trump in the 2024 election, appearing on Fox News to boost Trump&#8217;s campaign. Cooke served as assistant chief counsel in the Ohio governor&#8217;s office from 2012 to 2014. She also worked in the U.S. Attorney&#8217;s Office for the Southern District of Ohio, focusing on cases involving corruption, terrorism, drug trafficking, asset forfeiture, and money laundering.
According to a WPA Intelligence <a href="https://cdn.nucleusfiles.com/de/de97adfe-1c9a-48ea-9ce4-749dfe8de3de/wpai_oh_senate_memo_241120.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">poll</a> reported on by <a href="https://ohio.news/articles/poll-finds-larose-with-clear-lead-to-succeed-vance-in-us-senate" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ohio.news</a>, LaRose (17%) leads among candidates for the seat on favorability and potential to defeat the Democratic candidate in the special election. Husted is in second place at 10%, according to the poll. Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost is in third place, according to the poll, but Yost said earlier this month that he would decline an appointment to the Senate seat as he appears to be a top candidate for governor in 2026.
The WPA Intelligence poll rounds out with Renacci and Dolan at 5%, Joyce and Davidson at 3%, Timken and Carey at 2%, and Cooke at 1%. Whoever is appointed in the coming weeks will have to run in the 2026 special election to hold onto the seat, and the regular election for the Senate seat will take place two years later in 2028.

Ohio Republican Gov. Mike DeWine signed a bill on Tuesday prohibiting trans-identifying students from using bathrooms and locker rooms that don&#8217;t match their biological sex.
When the law takes effect in 90 days, public and private K-12 schools, along with colleges and universities, must ensure that bathrooms, locker rooms, and overnight accommodations are divided by biological sex, The Hill <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/lgbtq/5012298-dewine-ohio-transgender-students-bathroom-use/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. The bill was approved by Ohio&#8217;s Republican-controlled state Senate earlier this month. Democrats were united in their opposition to the legislation.
The new Ohio law also bans schools from building multi-occupancy &#8220;all-gender&#8221; facilities. According to the Ohio Capital Journal, the law <a href="https://ohiocapitaljournal.com/2024/11/27/ohio-gov-mike-dewine-signs-transgender-bathroom-ban-bill-into-law/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">does not prohibit</a> schools from having non-gendered single-occupancy bathrooms.
Ohio <a href="https://www.lgbtmap.org/equality-maps/nondiscrimination/bathroom_bans" target="_blank" rel="noopener">joins</a> more than a dozen other states that have taken action to ensure that K-12 students use bathrooms and locker rooms that align with their biological sex.
The Republicans who sponsored the original state House bill thanked DeWine for signing it into law.

In response, Lear added, &#8220;Yes, thank you @GovMikeDeWine for signing SB 104 to protect ALL students. &#8221;
DeWine was also praised by Republican Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost, who <a href="https://x.com/DaveYostOH/status/1861778495983985084" target="_blank" rel="noopener">thanked</a> the governor &#8220;for siding with biology, history safety and common sense.&#8221;
Democrats and leftist activists decried DeWine&#8217;s signing of the legislation. The American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio <a href="https://x.com/acluohio/status/1861787449980080135" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote</a>, &#8220;Transgender people are part of the fabric of Ohio; our families, our workplaces, and our neighborhoods. 🏳️‍⚧️ We remain steadfast in our commitment to the LGBTQ+ community and are closely considering next steps.&#8221;

The new law is yet another victory for conservatives in the state on the transgender issue. Last year, DeWine <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ohio-gop-governor-vetoes-bans-on-gender-procedures-for-minors-biological-boys-competing-in-girls-sports" target="_blank" rel="noopener">vetoed</a> bans on minors undergoing gender procedures and boys competing against girls in the state, but the state legislature overrode his veto in January 2024.

The Ohio county at the center of a controversy involving Haitian migrants swung even further to former President Donald Trump in 2024 compared to previous years.
Clark County went for Trump by 29.4 points this election, up 6.1 points from his 23.3 point victory over Biden in the county <a href="https://www.politico.com/2020-election/results/ohio/">in 2020</a>. The <a href="https://www.wtol.com/article/news/politics/elections/2024-ohio-election-results-county-by-county-map-nov-5-live-results/512-0d9f1ac9-bbce-499c-9787-ca0171b507bf">2024 election results</a> left Trump with 64.2 percent of the vote in the county, with Vice President Kamala Harris coming in with just 34.8 percent of the vote.
Springfield, the county seat of Clark County, was thrust into the national spotlight when as many as 20,000 Haitian migrants granted temporary protected status by the Biden administration <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/what-has-my-town-become-springfield-residents-say-its-falling-apart-amid-haitian-influx">were resettled there</a>. Harris and Democrats slammed Trump and his running mate, Sen. JD Vance (R-OH) for highlighting Springfield as proof of the Biden administration&#8217;s failed border policies.
But that rhetoric did not hurt Trump, who won 56 percent of precincts in Springfield, up from 49 percent in 2020 and 35 in 2016. Trump won almost exactly 50 percent of the 19,758 votes in the city, similarly marking a jump from his 45 percent and 43 percent of the vote in 2020 and 2016, respectively.
Springfield Republican Committeewoman Glenda Bailey told The Daily Wire that she believes the Haitian influx encouraged members of the community to support Trump.
“The first time Trump won, I said we could thank Obama because his policies caused the political shift to Republicans. This time I think we can thank Haitians for overwhelming this county with a stark 3rd world culture,” Bailey told The Daily Wire, saying that the increased support for Trump marked a backlash to the migrant surge.
“From what I saw at the polls a LOT of young voters arrived to vote for the FIRST TIME.  I also had others tell me it was their first time voting, so I believe the Haitian crisis definitely made a difference to the majority of voters,” Bailey explained.
Now, Bailey says she’s optimistic about what a Trump administration could mean for her community.
“I have more hope for the future of America than I&#8217;ve ever had before and I have faith that President Trump will keep his promises to Springfield, Ohio &amp; Aurora, Colorado starting on his first day in office,” Bailey told The Daily Wire, before explaining the specific policies that she hopes Trump pursues to remedy the migrant crisis in Springfield.
“Trump should immediately take away Haitian&#8217;s food stamps, welfare, housing, &amp; medical benefits so that they will begin to self-deport,” Bailey explained, adding that they will begin to leave on their own accord if the government stops “spreading taxpayer cash around” and giving it to the migrants. “The Haitians that have jobs should also be put on notice as to what date their work visas end, so that they can begin to make plans for their departure,” Bailey stated.
The incoming Trump administration has already indicated that it will take up the hardline immigration stance it promised on the campaign trail, where the president-elect <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/trump-mass-deportation-plan-cost-consequences-60-minutes-transcript/">pledged</a> to carry out “the largest deportation operation in American history.” Trump has named <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-taps-tom-homan-to-be-new-border-czar">Tom Homan</a>, the former Acting Director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, as the new “border czar.”
“Homan will be in charge of all Deportation of Illegal Aliens back to their Country of Origin,” Trump said in a statement.

The move comes as Republicans flipped seats in West Virginia and Ohio and are leading in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Montana, and Michigan. Republicans also held key seats in Nebraska and Texas.
In Ohio, Republican businessman Bernie Moreno is projected to defeat Democrat incumbent Sherrod Brown 50.3% to 46.3% with 90% of the vote reported in.
Moreno, a Colombian-born businessman, supports stronger border security and said that “energy dominance” will be one of his top issues if he is elected.
In West Virginia, former West Virginia Governor Jim Justice is projected to defeat Democrat Glenn Eliot 68.8% to 25.1% with 52% of the vote reported in. The seat was previously occupied by Democrat-turned independent Joe Manchin.

Senator Ted Cruz defended his Senate seat in Texas with a projected defeat of Democratic challenger Colin Allred 54%-43.8%.
“Ted Cruz won again despite liberals from California and New York doing everything they could to bankroll his radical opponent. Ted has been a tireless champion for Texans of all stripes, working to cut taxes, secure the border, and bring down costs for families. No matter what gets thrown at him, Ted knows Texas and knows what it takes to win,” National Republican Senate Committee chair Steve Daines said in a statement.
In Nebraska, Republican Deb Fischer is projected to hold on to her Senate seat against independent challenger Dan Osborne 51.5% to 48.5%. In Missouri, Sen. Josh Hawley is projected to defeat Democratic challenger Lucas Kunce 55.4%-41.8%.
Republicans are also leading key Senate races in the Democrats&#8217; &#8220;Blue Wall&#8221; states. Republican challenger Eric Hovde is currently leading incumbent Democratic Senator Tammy Baldwin. In Michigan, Mike Rogers is leading Democrat Rep. Elise Slotkin. In Pennsylvania, Dave McCormick is leading incumbent Democratic Senator Bob Casey.

Republican businessman Bernie Moreno is projected to win the U.S. Senate race in <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/ohio" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ohio</a>, according to Decision Desk HQ.
Moreno was projected the winner in the race over Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) 50.7% to 46% with 86% of the vote in.
Moreno&#8217;s victory could go a long way toward determining which party has control of the U.S. Senate starting in January.
Brown, who has been in office since 2007, had been losing ground in the polls against Moreno for months.
Brown had attempted to present himself as a moderate, especially on energy, vowing that he would “not turn my back on Ohio’s rural electric co-ops, Ohio energy workers, and Ohio families whose energy bills are already too high.”

In September, however, he participated in a campaign event alongside a radical environmentalist group pushing to close the state’s largest coal plant.
Moreno, a Colombian-born businessman, supports stronger border security and said that “energy dominance” will be one of his top issues if he is elected.
Moreno had also pushed to abolish the Department of Education, arguing that it has a “stranglehold on our kids.”

Bernie Moreno Projected To Win Ohio Senate Race

Control of the Senate is on the ballot today, and while Republicans have a straightforward path to flipping the upper chamber, Democrats need to pull off some upsets to maintain control.
Fifty-one senators, including four independents, are in the Democratic caucus in the Senate, compared to 49 Republicans. That breakdown will likely change as numerous Senate races are decided on Tuesday night, and possibly in the days after.
Here are 10 races to watch.
<h4>Arizona — Open Seat</h4>
After Sen. Kyrsten Sinema announced earlier this year that she was retiring from the Senate, the race for her seat was blown wide open. While Sinema became an independent in 2022, she still caucuses with the Democrats, meaning her seat would be a big flip for Republicans if they can win on Tuesday.
Republican candidate Kari Lake, who lost the gubernatorial election in 2022, is currently trailing in the polls against Democrat Rep. Ruben Gallego. Gallego enjoyed a nearly eight-point lead in the <a href="https://www.realclearpolling.com/polls/senate/general/2024/arizona/lake-vs-gallego" target="_blank" rel="noopener">RealClearPolitics</a> polling average in early October, but Lake has cut into that lead, trailing by less than 3 points as of Tuesday afternoon.
Much of the Arizona Senate race has centered on the border crisis, as Lake has hammered Gallego over his <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/dem-arizona-senate-candidate-supported-amnesty-flip-flopped-on-illegal-aliens-voting" target="_blank" rel="noopener">support for amnesty</a> and his vote against House Joint Resolution 24, which sought to prevent illegal immigrants from voting in local elections in Washington, D.C.
Cook Political Report rates the race as <a href="https://www.cookpolitical.com/ratings/senate-race-ratings" target="_blank" rel="noopener">lean Democrat</a>.
<h4>Maryland — Open Seat</h4>
Former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan is hoping to give the GOP a Senate seat in one of the most unlikely of states as he faces off against Democrat Angela Alsobrooks. Hogan was a popular governor in the blue state, winning two terms as a Republican. He has campaigned as a moderate willing to reach across the aisle, focusing on addressing economic issues and taxes.
Alsobrooks, a former county executive for Prince George County, Maryland, is pushing for pro-abortion policies and a ban on so-called assault weapons, claiming that &#8220;gun violence is the number one killer of children in America.&#8221; The Democrat leads Hogan in almost every recent <a href="https://www.realclearpolling.com/polls/senate/general/2024/maryland/hogan-vs-alsobrooks" target="_blank" rel="noopener">poll</a>, and Cook Political Report rates the race as likely Democrat. But if Republicans have a strong night on Tuesday, it could be evidenced by how well Hogan performs in deep-blue Maryland.
<h4>Michigan — Open Seat</h4>
Similar to Arizona, Michigan&#8217;s 2024 Senate race will decide who will replace a retiring senator — in this case, 74-year-old Democrat Debbie Stabenow. Both of Michigan&#8217;s Senate seats have been controlled by Democrats since Republican Spencer Abraham lost his re-election bid to Stabenow in 2000. The party&#8217;s nearly-25 years of controlling Michigan&#8217;s Senate seats, however, is up for grabs as Republican Mike Rogers is running in a tight race against Democratic Rep. Elissa Slotkin.
Slotkin was the clear favorite to win the race early on, but Rogers has <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/mi-republican-senate-candidate-gains-ground-on-dem-opponent-new-polls" target="_blank" rel="noopener">cut into</a> the Democrat&#8217;s lead in the polls. Both Slotkin and Rogers have focused heavily on the economy, with Rogers accusing Slotkin of supporting a controversial Chinese-owned electric vehicle plant being built in Big Rapids, Michigan. Slotkin, meanwhile, has attempted to tie Rogers to Big Pharma and has touted her support of abortion.
Slotkin currently leads in the RealClearPolitics average by 2.3 points, and Cook Political Report rates the race as a toss-up.
<h4>Montana — Democrat Seat</h4>
Longtime Democrat Sen. Jon Tester is in an uphill battle to keep his Senate seat, which he&#8217;s held since 2007. Republican candidate Tim Sheehy, a retired Navy SEAL, is challenging Tester, focusing on the border crisis that has exploded under the Biden-Harris administration.
Montana represents one of the Republican Party&#8217;s best chances to flip a seat in the Senate with Cook Political Report rating the race lean Republican. Tester winning re-election could be vital to the Democratic Party&#8217;s narrow path to keeping control of the Senate. Polling on the Montana race has shown Sheehy leading Tester by nearly 8 points on average, according to <a href="https://www.realclearpolling.com/polls/senate/general/2024/montana/sheehy-vs-tester" target="_blank" rel="noopener">RealClearPolitics</a>.
<h4>Nebraska — Republican Seat</h4>
Republican Sen. Deb Fischer is running for re-election against independent candidate Dan Osborn, a Navy veteran. Fischer has served in the Senate since 2013 and has won each of her elections by wide margins. But polling from this year&#8217;s race shows a much closer contest than what Fischer is used to.
Osborn reportedly asked the Democratic Party to keep a candidate off the ballot to form a coalition behind him, but then said he would <a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2024/05/15/dan-osborn-spurns-democrats-other-parties-whose-help-he-sought-in-senate-race/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">not accept</a> the Democratic Party&#8217;s endorsement following the primaries. While an Osborn upset in Nebraska wouldn&#8217;t help push the Democrats closer to a majority, it could potentially hurt the GOP&#8217;s numbers and its path to taking control of the Senate.

<h4>Nevada — Democrat Seat</h4>
Nevada Democrat Sen. Jacky Rosen is in a close race against Republican Sam Brown in what would be a huge pick-up for Republicans if Brown can pull off the upset. Rosen won her first term as senator in the 2018 election after serving as a congresswoman from Nevada&#8217;s 3rd District for one term.
Brown, a U.S. Army veteran who was wounded while serving in Afghanistan in 2008, a political outsider is hoping to burst onto the scene with a victory over Rosen. An upset for Brown seemed far from reach just two months ago when Rosen led in the <a href="https://www.realclearpolling.com/polls/senate/general/2024/nevada/brown-vs-rosen" target="_blank" rel="noopener">RCP average</a> by 10 points, but Brown has chipped away at the Democrat&#8217;s lead, now trailing by just four points. In one recent poll, Brown was tied with Rosen, and in another, he was leading by 1 point.
Cook Political Report rates the race as lean Democrat.
<h4>Ohio — Democrat Seat</h4>
In what Cook Political Report is rating as another toss-up race, Democrat Sherrod Brown has been <a href="https://www.realclearpolling.com/polls/senate/general/2024/ohio/brown-vs-moreno" target="_blank" rel="noopener">losing ground</a> in the polls against Republican Bernie Moreno. Brown, who has been in office since 2007, has attempted to present himself as a moderate, especially on energy, vowing that he “will not turn my back on Ohio’s rural electric co-ops, Ohio energy workers, and Ohio families whose energy bills are already too high.” In September, however, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ohio-dem-senator-to-hold-event-with-group-pushing-to-close-states-largest-coal-plant" target="_blank" rel="noopener">participated in a campaign event</a> alongside a radical environmentalist group pushing to close the state’s largest coal plant.
Moreno, a Colombian-born businessman, supports stronger border security and <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/bernie-moreno-touts-historically-powerful-trump-endorsement-after-ohio-primary-win-previews-day-1-agenda" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> that &#8220;energy dominance&#8221; will be one of his top issues if he is elected. Moreno has also pushed to abolish the Department of Education, arguing that it has a &#8220;stranglehold on our kids.&#8221;
Moreno leads by just 1.7 points in the RealClearPolitics average.
<h4>Pennsylvania — Democrat Seat</h4>
In Pennsylvania, Democrat Sen. Bob Casey is running for his fourth term against Republican businessman Dave McCormick. The battleground state Senate race is another chance for Republicans to steal a seat from the Democrats. McCormick has recently surged in the polls, saying that Pennsylvanians “can see now it’s between a seventh-generation Pennsylvanian, an outsider, a business guy, someone who went to West Point and served in combat, versus a guy who’s been in elected office for 30 years and has been weak in a 99% vote for these liberal policies.&#8221;
In recent weeks, Casey has attempted to tie himself to former President Donald Trump, dropping a campaign that says “Casey bucked Biden to protect fracking and he sided with Trump to end NAFTA and put tariffs on China to stop them from cheating.”
Casey leads McCormick by <a href="https://www.realclearpolling.com/polls/senate/general/2024/pennsylvania/mccormick-vs-casey" target="_blank" rel="noopener">1.8 points</a> in the RCP average of polls, and Cook Political Report rates the race as a toss-up.
<h4>Texas — Republican Seat</h4>
Republican Sen. Ted Cruz is seeking to fend off an upset bid from Democrat Rep. Colin Allred and keep the Texas Senate seat in the GOP&#8217;s hands. Allred, a former NFL linebacker, has gone along with the Biden-Harris agenda <a href="https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/biden-congress-votes/colin-allred/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">100%</a> of the time. During a recent debate, Cruz <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ted-cruz-blasts-his-dem-opponents-radical-and-extreme-record-during-debate" target="_blank" rel="noopener">blasted</a> Allred&#8217;s &#8220;radical and extreme&#8221; record, pointing out that the Democrat voted in favor of the leftist “Equality Act,” a bill that prohibited discrimination based on “sexual orientation” or “gender identity.”
For Democrats to maintain control of the Senate, they would likely have to pull off a win in Montana or a major upset over Cruz in Texas. Cook Political Report rates the Cruz-Allred race as lean Republican.
<h4>Wisconsin — Democrat Seat</h4>
The fourth and final Senate toss-up race, according to Cook Political Report, is the Wisconsin contest between incumbent Democrat Tammy Baldwin and Republican Eric Hovde. Baldwin, a senator since 2013, has seen the <a href="https://www.realclearpolling.com/polls/senate/general/2024/wisconsin/hovde-vs-baldwin" target="_blank" rel="noopener">polls</a> grow closer in recent weeks. Hovde, like many Republicans, is focused on immigration and the economy and is hoping to ride some momentum from Trump, who has been focusing on the battleground state.
Baldwin leads Hovde by just 1.8 points, according to the RealClearPolitics average.

A foreign billionaire is using an American dark money organization to boost a ballot initiative that could permanently change the balance of power in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Hansjorg Wyss has poured a quarter of a billion dollars into the Sixteen Thirty Fund, a left-wing money clearinghouse that has spent $7 million to push Ohio to vote yes on “Issue One,” a ballot initiative that would change how electoral districts are drawn.
If the ballot initiative passes, it would require that the proportion of Democrat-leaning House seats be proportional to how many Democrats live in the state, even if those Democrats are concentrated in just a few districts. That could strip several House seats from Republicans — who currently control the lower chamber by a razor-thin margin — in 2026.
But Issue One would boost Democratic power at the expense of community representation. In particular, the initiative is likely to disburse the power currently held in majority-black urban areas. When Michigan redrew its districts in a similar way in 2021, it gave Democrats more seats in Congress, but left Detroit without a black congressman for the first time in 70 years.
Some black Democrats aren’t happy with this trade off – particularly because the effort is funded by a Swiss billionaire.
“These are people that are supposed to be our political allies, but look at what they are doing to black interests,” Sherry Gay-Dagnogo, a former Michigan state delegate, told The Daily Wire.
“When you think about how much money has been dumped into this thing from out of state and even out of the country, what African American organization is going to be able to look at that and hire a lawyer and push back?” Gay-Dagnogo, a black Democrat, said.
Proponents of Ohio’s ballot initiative have spent $37 million to advance the issue. Nearly 90% of that money has come from out of state, financial disclosures show. A group called Citizens Not Politicians (CNP) has spent <a href="https://www6.ohiosos.gov/ords/f?p=CFDISCLOSURE:44:::NO::P44_RP_ID,P44_LISTTYPE:446242621,simple" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$11 million</a>. Nearly $7 million of CNP&#8217;s money came from the Sixteen Thirty Fund.
Because Wyss is not a U.S. citizen, he is not permitted to spend money to impact candidate elections. But Sixteen Thirty appears to have identified a loophole: That generally doesn’t apply to state-level ballot initiatives. The Daily Wire previously reported the fund has spent more than <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/liberals-are-exploiting-this-loophole-to-flood-swing-states-with-dark-money" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$21 million this cycle on such initiatives</a>.
Sixteen Thirty gave $550,000 to CNP as it got off the ground in October 2023. On May 23, 2024, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced that he intended to have the legislature <a href="https://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/OHIOGOVERNOR/2024/05/23/file_attachments/2888202/Proclamation%20-%20Special%20Session.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">vote on a bill to ban foreign spending</a> on ballot initiatives. The same day, Sixteen Thirty sent $6 million to CNP. CNP then spent every penny it had before the law actually went into effect, with its July campaign finance report showing $0 cash on hand.
The law prohibiting foreign funding of ballot measures was also challenged in court by Democrat lawyer Marc Elias, who has previously served as Wyss’s lawyer. The suit challenging the Ohio law did not name Wyss as a plaintiff, with Elias instead saying he was representing others including a nonprofit advocating for<a href="https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.ohsd.294667/gov.uscourts.ohsd.294667.1.0.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> nonbinary Asians</a>.
CNP did not return a request for comment.
The initiative could require that the percent of House seats that were favorable to each party be within three percentage points of Ohio’s “statewide partisan preference.” But the devil is in the details.
DeWine won the popular vote in every county but three, and captured 62% of the popular vote. But the bill would calculate the state’s purported partisan preference based on an average of statewide elections in the last six years, reaching back to a time when Ohio was considerably less red.
Issue One backers’ message is that it makes the process less political by setting up a citizen commission to draw boundaries rather than lawmakers. While the 15-person commission would consist of equal numbers of Democrats, Republicans, and independents, they will all be laymen, not politicians, and opponents say bias could overtake the commission in the likely event that members enlist experts to help them with their complicated task.
“Anytime you set up a commission where the people have no experience drawing maps…they were at the mercy of an alleged expert,” Gay-Dagnogo said. “When will the citizens have an opportunity to draw a map? They will not.”
Frank Strigari, a Republican attorney and former Ohio state Senate aide who has been involved in redistricting issues, said these experts were likely to be left-leaning academics. That, he said, could lead to most of Ohio’s 15 congressional seats going to Democrats, even as a majority of Ohioans vote Republican. That’s because some of the nominally Republican-leaning districts could have only a narrow edge, lacking resistance to ebbs and flows such as backlash to a Republican president during midterm season, while the Democrat ones could be more bulletproof.
If Issue One succeeds, the idea is likely to spread to other states as Democrats reverse their longstanding position on “gerrymandering” to rectify the fact that their party’s power is increasingly confined to urban areas.
Previously, both parties viewed oddly-shaped districts as unfair, and preferred districts that reflected organic communities and allowed congressmen to represent a defined constituency. For instance, a predominantly-black district city would have its own congressional district, which would likely elect a black congressman. This in particular was important to Democrats.
But now, Democrats view overwhelmingly-Democratic urban and black districts as a waste, full of surplus Democratic votes that could be spread out through creative boundary drawing into purple districts they could tip blue. Under Ohio’s proposal, preserving such “communities of interest,” is a secondary goal, to be achieved to “the extent practicable.”
“They’re cutting up just enough of the black districts to give the Democrats an edge, but not considering the cultural barriers, the impact of not having a person in Congress to advocate for the needs of those in poverty,” Gay-Dagnogo said.
Jason Snead of the Honest Elections Project, which opposes Ohio’s Issue One, says Democrats’ embrace on the issue proves they know the commission will favor their party.
If Democrats really believed “citizen-led” commissions were the best option, Snead said, “you’d see them doing it in states like Illinois and Oregon,” where the commissions could boost Republicans.
“But you don’t,” Snead added.

Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost announced charges on Tuesday against six individuals for allegedly voting as non-citizens in previous elections. 
The indictments come after Ohio <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ohio-secretary-of-state-orders-removal-of-nearly-500-non-citizens-from-voter-rolls">removed</a> 500 non-citizens from its rolls in August after an audit of its voter registration database. Other states, like Georgia and Texas, have removed thousands of non-citizens from their rolls in recent months in the lead up to the November election. 
“The right to vote is sacred,” Yost <a href="https://www.ohioattorneygeneral.gov/Media/News-Releases/October-2024/Grand-Juries-Indict-6-for-Illegal-Voting#:~:text=Illegal%20voting%20is%20a%20fourth,will%20continue%20to%20be%20enforced.”" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. “If you’re not a U.S. citizen, it’s illegal to vote – whether you thought you were allowed to or not – you will be held accountable.”
Those charged included Ramesh Patel, 68, of North Royalton; Lorinda Miller, 78, of Hudson; Nicholas Fontaine, 32; Ahmed Aden, 35, of Columbus; Van Thuy Cooper, 53, of Hilliard; and Maria Dearaujo, 62, of Columbus. They could all face up to 18 months in prison if convicted. 
Patel was accused of voting as a non-citizen in 2014, 2016, and 2018, and is expected to be arranged on November 1 in Cuyahoga County. 
Miller, Fontaine, Aden, Cooper, and Dearaujo are all described as legal permanent residents of the United States. They were accused of illegally voting in multiple elections: Miller (2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019), Fontaine (2016 and 2018), Aden (2008 and 2020),  Cooper (2016 and 2020), and Dearaujo (2016 and 2018). 
Yost said the indictments should not undermine confidence in the upcoming presidential election. 
“Irregularities like this are rare, and this is a small number of cases,” he said. “We should all be confident in the upcoming election, knowing that the laws are being enforced and will continue to be enforced.”

As Republican officials have pushed to clean up voter rolls across the country, Democrats and the legacy media have repeatedly downplayed concerns about non-citizen voting. 
States like Alabama and Virginia have <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/exclusive-biden-suing-va-for-purging-illegals-from-voting-rolls-even-though-doj-approved-the-law" target="_blank" rel="noopener">faced lawsuits</a> from the Justice Department over efforts to clean up voter rolls, arguing that the states’ actions were taking place too close to the presidential election. 
Earlier this year, the House <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/nearly-all-house-dems-vote-against-bill-requiring-voters-prove-citizenship" target="_blank" rel="noopener">approved</a> legislation that would have required individuals to show proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote in elections for federal office. The legislation also would have pushed the states to remove non-citizens from their rolls. The bill advanced to the Democrat-controlled Senate, where it stalled out.

‘You Will Be Held Accountable’: Ohio Charges Six Non-Citizens With Illegally Voting

Residents from <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/what-you-need-to-know-about-the-ohio-town-overrun-by-haitian-immigrants" target="_blank" rel="noopener">another midwestern town</a>, this time in Indiana, say city resources are being strained and their children put last due to a sudden influx of migrants from Haiti.
Thousands of new migrants, hailing mostly from Haiti, are now living in Logansport, Indiana, a town with a population of just 18,000. Though local officials say they have not been given any answers on just how many migrants have moved in, estimates range from 3,000 to <a href="https://fox59.com/investigations/logansport-officials-say-immigrant-population-growth-is-unsustainable/">5,000 Haitians</a>. The surrounding areas have seen an influx as well, with an estimated 11,000 new migrants county-wide.
Logansport Mayor Chris Martin has said that there are “assimilation issues” related to culture, according to a <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/10/21/us-news/logansport-in-students-struggle-after-thousands-of-migrants-moved-in/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">report</a> from the New York Post.
In one instance, a resident named Nancy Baker told the Post that her 16-year-old daughter was chased by migrants after she rebuffed their calls to walk over to them while she was on her way to a nearby coffee shop. 
Another resident, 32-year-old Candice Espinoza, said migrants routinely stare into her windows while she’s home, holding up their phones, potentially recording her.
“It’s not safe. They just stare at you and won’t talk to you,” she told the Post. “They stand there staring at my house with cameras on their phones. I don’t know if they’re recording, what they’re doing.”

“You don’t feel easy when someone is constantly watching you,&#8221; Espinoza added.
Additionally, resources are now significantly strained. The number of Haitian migrant students in Logansport schools has increased 15-fold since 2021. Teachers are having to spend increased time with these new students because of the language barrier. Baker says her daughter dropped out of public school to take the rest of her classes online.
“She quit. She’s in online school now,&#8221; Baker said. &#8220;Nobody was getting the attention that they needed. It’s way too many kids, and it seemed to her that because they didn&#8217;t speak the language and didn&#8217;t understand what was going on, they were getting more attention.”
Baker said she’s frustrated that her daughter&#8217;s school is spending most of its resources on &#8220;one group of children,&#8221; while &#8220;everybody else is falling behind.”
In January of 2023, the Biden-Harris administration launched a new program that allowed more than <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2024/09/19/us/springfield-ohio-haitians-immigration-cec/index.html">200,000 Haitians</a> to be paroled into the U.S. Additionally, over the summer, the administration granted Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to more than <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/investigations/biden-admin-gives-protected-status-309000-haitians-rcna159438">300,000</a> Haitian migrants, who are now permitted to stay in the U.S. until at least February of 2026, even if they entered the country illegally.
It&#8217;s unclear how so many migrants are ending up in small towns in Ohio, Indiana, and Pennsylvania. However, there does seem to be a connection between nonprofits that are resettling migrants and businesses looking for labor.
A <a href="https://fox59.com/investigations/logansport-officials-say-immigrant-population-growth-is-unsustainable/">report</a> from FOX59 and CBS4 connected Haitian migrants in Logansport to Tyson Foods, a meatpacking plant. The report noted that Tyson did not respond when they were asked about how many migrants, particularly young migrants, are working for them in the city. Notably, Haitian teens are reportedly working shifts to help their families while also attending school.
Tyson made headlines back in May when a conservative <a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/retail-consumer/tyson-foods-accused-by-conservative-group-bias-against-us-workers-2024-05-29/">nonprofit</a> called America First Legal asked the Department of Justice to investigate the company over its employment practices concerning migrants. AFL said Tyson employs 42,000 foreign workers &#8212; more than a third of its U.S. workforce &#8212; and is also involved in programs to recruit more migrants. 
Tyson has strongly denied discriminating against American workers for migrants and said all their workers are legal.
In Springfield, Ohio, another town inundated with migrants from Haiti, manufacturing and packing plant jobs opened up and <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/09/14/us/haitian-migrants-springfield-ohio.html">businesses</a> welcomed and encouraged the flow of migrants to fill labor needs. Businesses and nonprofits also seem to be a key reason for a migrant influx in Charleroi, Pennsylvania.
It&#8217;s estimated that about <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/what-you-need-to-know-about-the-ohio-town-overrun-by-haitian-immigrants">20,000 Haitian migrants</a> over the past few years have moved into Springfield, which had a population of just 60,000 people. Charleroi has seen a <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/pittsburgh/news/charleroi-school-district-immigrant-students/#">2,000% increase</a> in its immigration population.
Residents and officials from the towns say there’s been an increase in traffic violations and car accidents, resources at schools and local law enforcement are strained, housing has become more scarce, and residents are struggling overall with the lack of assimilation from the newcomers.

The <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/ohio" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ohio</a> Supreme Court on Tuesday allowed a measure to take effect mandating that voters place their own ballots in drop boxes, rejecting an effort from the Democratic Party to block the directive. 
The court <a href="https://www.supremecourt.ohio.gov/rod/docs/pdf/0/2024/2024-ohio-4953.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ruled</a> 4-3 to dismiss a challenge to Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose’s directive restricting drop box access to people dropping off their own ballots. The court said that the Ohio Democratic Party waited an unreasonable amount of time to file its suit and denied the effort to block the directive. 
“I’m grateful the court has allowed us to proceed with our efforts to protect the integrity of Ohio’s elections,” LaRose said in response to the ruling. “Political activists tried once again to dismantle the safeguards we’ve put in place, specifically in this case against ballot harvesting, and they’ve been rejected.”
“This is the same policy that’s been used successfully in other states, and it’s designed to protect both individuals and election officials from accusations of illegal voting,” he added. “The court’s decision should reinforce the confidence Ohio voters have in the security, honesty, and accountability of our elections.”
Ohio Democratic Party chair Elizabeth Walters lamented the decision. 
“Today’s decision is disappointing not just for us as a party, but for Ohioans who will be forced to jump through unnecessary hoops to exercise their right to vote in this historic election,” she <a href="https://ohiocapitaljournal.com/2024/10/16/split-ohio-supreme-court-turns-down-lawsuit-challenging-new-dropbox-restrictions/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. 
In a dissenting opinion, Judge Pierre Bergeron called the majority decision “a sleight of hand that should make our citizens shudder” and said the directive was “an affront to personal dignity.” 
LaRose’s directive was issued on August 31, and the Democratic Party challenged the suit on September 27.

The directive said that individuals could return a ballot for a disabled voter or family member, but only to a county board of elections. This includes a requirement for the person dropping off the ballot to attest that they were authorized to return it inside the election board office.  Election officials were also required to post signs over the drop box explaining the guidelines. 
“I am acting under my statutory authority to compel the observance of election laws, in this case Ohio’s prohibition on ‘ballot harvesting,’ a process by which an individual attempts to collect and return absent voters’ ballots of other persons without accountability,” La Rose said. 
In the same directive, LaRose urged officials to remain vigilant about ballot harvesting. 
“Ongoing routine monitoring of drop boxes should continue, specifically monitoring for individuals who are dropping off more than one ballot,” he said. “My office will vigorously investigate and refer for prosecution any individual engaged in ballot harvesting in violation of Ohio law.”
Early voting began last week in Ohio as voters cast their ballots in the presidential race and a key Senate race between incumbent Democrat Sherrod Brown and Republican challenger Bernie Moreno.

A Springfield, Ohio temp agency that profits off migrant labor is encouraging Haitian migration to the small Rust Belt city, reportedly drawing scrutiny from state and federal authorities.
<a href="https://www.firstdiversity.com/">First Diversity Staffing</a> supplies <a href="https://dayton247now.com/news/local/springfield-sees-influx-of-15000-haitian-immigrants-seeking-job-opportunities">Haitian labor</a> to companies in the surrounding area including Amazon, <a href="https://www.springfieldnewssun.com/news/local-legal-community-helping-haitian-immigrants-stay-in-us-springfield/BRPIMCRHFBAWVGOEDF4JLNAOOM/">Dole,</a> and Topre, an automotive parts manufacturer. The company even <a href="https://www.facebook.com/FirstDiversity/videos/276050814235915/">provides transportation</a> to the migrants, shuttling them to and from the company’s corporate clients.
But a Daily Wire review shows that First Diversity is doing more than recruiting Haitian migrants already in Springfield. The company appears to be actively recruiting Haitian labor from other parts of the United States, encouraging migrants on <a href="https://www.youtube.com/shorts/kQ9yzKtA7RM">Instagram</a> to leave states like Florida and “join us at First Diversity.”
“Do you speak Creole and English? Do you enjoy helping people? Would you like to help your community? Well join us at First Diversity,” a woman speaking Haitian Creole says in the post.
“Everyone has the right to work for a good company. If you live in other states like Florida, you speak Creole and English, you would like to make more money, you have no problem changing states, then join us at First Diversity where you will have the opportunity to help your community while you work to help your family.”
Springfield had less than 60,000 residents before the migrant influx brought in anywhere between 15,000 to 20,000 Haitians. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/what-has-my-town-become-springfield-residents-say-its-falling-apart-amid-haitian-influx">Residents say</a> the migrant surge has burdened their city, strained their resources, and made their streets less safe.
A <a href="https://jewishjournal.com/commentary/opinion/375011/feds-and-state-ag-investigate-an-alleged-human-trafficking-empire-run-in-springfield-ohio/">report</a> from Asra Nomani in the Jewish Journal claims that First Diversity and its president, George Ten, hasn’t simply attracted migrants from other states, but actually bused migrants all the way from Florida to Springfield, directly contributing to the influx.
First Diversity and Ten have now caught the attention of federal and state authorities, Nomani says, writing that both the FBI and Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost are investigating Ten and his company over human trafficking allegations.
Neither the Department of Justice or the Ohio Attorney General’s office responded to a Daily Wire request for comment.
First Diversity has a record of relocating workers. Its website and social media pages feature videos detailing how it brought workers from <a href="https://www.facebook.com/FirstDiversityPR/videos/first-diversity-staffing-the-relocation-project/2703116679729122/?locale=es_LA">Puerto Rico</a> and the <a href="https://youtu.be/rkoVLMHTKXU">Dominican Republic</a> into the United States.
Springfield native Glenda Bailey says that Ten and his company are &#8220;responsible for everything that has happened in this city.&#8221; Bailey told The Daily Wire that the Haitian influx has resulted in “the <a href="https://www.springfieldnewssun.com/news/judge-we-cant-fix-this-minivan-driver-in-fatal-clark-county-school-bus-crash-sentenced-to-prison/WPF262IOXNFTLCQKOTQPZYEKBA/">deaths</a> and injuries of innocent Americans,” “skyrocketing car insurance rates,” and a “housing crisis that put Americans on the streets.”
Bailey, who is now active in her local Republican Party, went on to say that First Diversity’s “quasi-legal workforce of Haitians” is “replacing Springfield&#8217;s American workforce,” <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/what-has-my-town-become-springfield-residents-say-its-falling-apart-amid-haitian-influx">echoing concerns</a> from other residents.
Ten may also be profiting from the Haitian influx through a second business venture. The First Diversity president is also listed as the agent behind Ten Enterprises LLC, a company that owns various properties around town, on Ohio’s Secretary of State’s website. Ten Enterprises LLC <a href="https://clarkcountyauditor.org/SearchResults?searchTerm=ten+enterprises+llc&amp;appid=&amp;Command=Combined">owns 48 properties</a> in Springfield, and the Washington Examiner <a href="https://gazette.com/news/wex/getting-rich-from-springfield-s-migrant-misery/article_67e0dea5-86c2-50b6-a58a-a9d192af2c2b.html">reports</a> that Haitian migrants rent at least some of these homes.
It isn’t just Ten and his company that could have a financial interest in the mass resettlement of Haitians in Springfield. The Greater Springfield Partnership, a non-profit that advocates for business interests in the city, released a statement expressing <a href="https://www.greaterspringfield.com/haitian-immigration-statement">their support</a> for the Haitian migrant resettlement, saying that the migrants provide labor. The organization lists Dole and Topre, both of whom hire Haitians, among its <a href="https://www.greaterspringfield.com/">sustaining investors</a>.
First Diversity did not respond to a request for comment.
