A former top aide to New York Democrat Governor <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/kathy-hochul" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kathy Hochul</a> was indicted in federal court this week for allegedly acting as a foreign agent for the Chinese government and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in exchange for millions of dollars.
Linda Sun was indicted on charges of violating and conspiring to violate the Foreign Agents Registration Act, visa fraud, alien smuggling, and money laundering conspiracy, the DOJ said. Her husband, Chris Hu, was charged with money laundering conspiracy, conspiracy to commit bank fraud, and misuse of means of identification.
Sun allegedly acted as a spy for China and the CCP while working for Hochul and in multiple state agencies, prosecutors said.
The DOJ said, &#8220;Acting at the request of PRC government officials and the CCP representatives, Sun engaged in numerous political activities in the interests of the PRC and the CCP, including blocking representatives of the Taiwanese government from having access to high-level New York State officers; changing high-level New York State officers’ messaging regarding issues of importance to the PRC and the CCP; obtaining official New York State proclamations for PRC government representatives without proper authorization; attempting to facilitate a trip to the PRC by a high-level New York State politician; and arranging meetings for visiting delegations from the PRC government with New York State government officials.&#8221;
She allegedly provided improper benefits to Chinese and CCP officials by giving them &#8220;unauthorized invitation letters from the office of high-level New York State officers that were used to facilitate travel by PRC government officials into the United States for meetings with New York State government officials.&#8221;
Her invitation letters reportedly facilitated bringing Chinese nationals into the U.S. illegally.

Investigators said that in return for her spying, she received &#8220;substantial&#8221; benefits, including &#8220;the facilitation of millions of dollars in transactions for the PRC-based business activities of Hu; travel benefits; tickets to events; promotion of a close family friend’s business; employment for Sun’s cousin in the PRC; and Nanjing-style salted ducks prepared by a PRC government official’s personal chef that were delivered to the residence of Sun’s parents.&#8221;
Sun and Hu are accused of laundering the money to purchase &#8220;real estate property in Manhasset, New York currently valued at $4.1 million, a condominium in Honolulu, Hawaii currently valued at $2.1 million, and various luxury automobiles, including a 2024 Ferrari.&#8221;

A <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/u-s-house-of-representatives" target="_blank" rel="noopener">House</a> Republican from upstate <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/new-york" target="_blank" rel="noopener">New York</a> is calling on her state&#8217;s Democratic governor, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/kathy-hochul" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kathy Hochul</a>, to pardon <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/donald-trump" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Donald Trump</a> after the former president was recently found guilty on all counts in a hush money trial.
Rep. Claudia Tenney (R-NY), a New York Bar Association member, made the request in a letter on Thursday that also urged Hochul to remove Alvin Bragg as Manhattan district attorney, saying he failed to uphold the &#8220;high ethical standards&#8221; of his role.
Bragg &#8220;used a warped version of events to push the manufactured charges&#8221; against Trump, a decision that was, &#8220;At best &#8230; legally questionable, at worst it’s criminal,&#8221; Tenney wrote in the letter, which has been <a href="https://tenney.house.gov/sites/evo-subsites/tenney.house.gov/files/evo-media-document/trump%20pardon%20letter%20.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">posted</a> to her congressional website.
She said Bragg &#8220;neglected to prosecute other individuals&#8221; in similar cases &#8220;as his only purpose in bringing this case is to target the former President,&#8221; adding, &#8220;Targeting an individual, especially for political purposes, is unethical and unconstitutional.&#8221;
A jury returned a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/verdict-trump-found-guilty-on-all-charges-in-hush-money-case" target="_blank" rel="noopener">guilty verdict</a> against Trump on all 34 felony counts of falsifying business records to allegedly cover up a tryst with adult film star Stormy Daniel as part of a “catch-and-kill” scheme to influence the 2016 election.
Trump, who denied the affair and pleaded not guilty to the charges, has <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/us/white-house-race-plunges-into-uncharted-territory-trump-awaits-july-sentencing-2024-05-31/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">vowed</a> to appeal. Sentencing is set for July 11, just four days before Trump is expected to receive the GOP presidential nomination at the Republican convention in Milwaukee.

Hochul has given no indication that she is interested in dealing Trump a pardon as he seeks a second term in the White House. The New York governor released a <a href="https://x.com/JonCampbellNY/status/1796318381160702383" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a> saying the verdict &#8220;reaffirms that no one is above the law.&#8221;
Still, there is some pressure from the Democratic Party. Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN), who briefly challenged President Joe Biden for their party&#8217;s presidential nomination, <a href="https://x.com/deanbphillips/status/1796695686215348594" target="_blank" rel="noopener">posted</a> to X that Hochul &#8220;should pardon him [Trump] for the good of the country.&#8221;
Three other criminal matters hang over Trump, including two led by special counsel Jack Smith and another by Georgia&#8217;s Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis. It is unclear whether any of those will reach the trial stage before the 2024 election.

In a shocking backtrack, New York Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul announced an indefinite delay on the controversial congestion pricing plan for drivers entering Manhattan&#8217;s central business district amid fears that it could affect Democrats&#8217; election chances.
On Wednesday, Hochul said she had directed the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) to push back the new toll’s June 30 start date.
&#8220;After careful consideration, I have come to the difficult decision that implementing the planned congestion pricing system risked too many unintended consequences for New Yorkers at this time,&#8221; Hochul <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kRVEYLjYBcg" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> in a video announcement.
&#8220;For that reason, I have directed the MTA to indefinitely pause the program,&#8221; she said.
The governor cited the high cost of living, saying &#8220;hardworking New Yorkers are getting hammered on costs.&#8221; She added that while New York&#8217;s pandemic recovery has been faster than expected, it is &#8220;by no means complete.&#8221;
The MTA&#8217;s congestion pricing plan would charge drivers a minimum of $15 to enter Midtown Manhattan south of 60th Street. Drivers would be charged the rush hour price nearly all day every day — between 5 a.m. and 9 p.m. on weekdays and between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. on weekends. Cars would be charged $3.75 during the remaining hours.
The toll is aimed at lessening peak-hour congestion in Manhattan. The around $1 billion raised from the toll is supposed to go towards upgrading subways, commuter railroads, and bus systems.
Hochul is also <a href="https://abc7ny.com/post/congestion-pricing-nyc-kathy-hochul-start-delay/14912968/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reportedly</a> concerned about how the expensive toll might affect local Democrats facing uphill battles in House races in the New York City suburbs. Republicans have already started attacking Democrats over the toll.
Additionally, several lawsuits have already been filed over the congestion pricing plan.
For months, critics have slammed the idea of slapping drivers with new expensive charges.
Representative Nicole Malliotakis, a Republican and vocal critic of the toll, celebrated the expected change.
“It is welcome news that Governor Hochul is considering delaying congestion pricing, scheduled to begin June 30, due to our pressure, the public‘s outcry and concerns it will impact Democrats in November’s election,” Malliotakis <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/06/05/us-news/gov-kathy-hochul-considering-delaying-congestion-pricing-report/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> the New York Post.

“I urge my fellow New Yorkers to continue calling their city, state and federal representatives because it is working. They are feeling the heat and this war-on-cars cash grab must be reversed!” she said.
Another critic of the toll, International Transport Workers president John Samuelsen, who serves on the MTA board, also sounded off on the reversal.
“I told the governor two years ago that if she imposed the congestion toll without increases in transit service it would be a political disaster,” Samuelson <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/06/05/us-news/gov-kathy-hochul-considering-delaying-congestion-pricing-report/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. “It’s like taxation without representation. She let [MTA CEO] Janno Lieber lead her around like a stooge.”
The MTA is governed by 23 members, who are nominated by the governor, NYC mayor, and local officials.
New York City Democratic Mayor Eric Adams emphasized that the congestion toll should not be a &#8220;burden on everyday New Yorkers.&#8221;
&#8220;We have to get it right,&#8221; Adams said. &#8220;We have to make sure that it&#8217;s not going to impact our recovery. We got to the point of more jobs in this city than in the history of the city because of the support in the recovery effort.&#8221;

Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN) called on New York Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul to pardon former President Donald Trump following his conviction in the Manhattan hush-money trial.
Phillips, who ran for president in the Democratic primary and was blown out by President Joe Biden, argued that Trump&#8217;s guilty verdict will only energize the Republican candidate&#8217;s base ahead of the 2024 election. Trump was convicted on Thursday of 34 counts of falsifying business records related to hush-money payments sent to porn actress Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election.
While the Democratic congressman <a href="https://x.com/deanbphillips/status/1796695686215348594" target="_blank" rel="noopener">slammed</a> Trump as &#8220;a serial liar, cheater, and philanderer, a six-time declarer of corporate bankruptcy, an instigator of insurrection, and a convicted felon,&#8221; he argued on Friday that Hochul should pardon the former president &#8220;for the good of the country.&#8221;
After Phillips was blasted for calling on Hochul to pardon the convicted Republican candidate, he doubled down on his argument in a tweet on Saturday morning.
&#8220;You think pardoning is stupid? Making him a martyr over a payment to a porn star is stupid. (Election charges are entirely different.),&#8221; he <a href="https://x.com/deanbphillips/status/1796873915073003952" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote</a>. &#8220;It’s energizing his base, generating record sums of campaign cash, and will likely result in an electoral boost.&#8221;
Hochul applauded the conviction of Trump, telling <a href="https://www.npr.org/2024/05/31/nx-s1-4987264/new-york-gov-kathy-hochul-weighs-in-on-trumps-conviction-in-her-state" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NPR</a>, &#8220;Justice was served.&#8221; She added that she doesn&#8217;t believe the felony conviction &#8220;is going to be a factor in the election for our congressional candidates.&#8221;
In the immediate aftermath of Trump&#8217;s conviction, donations <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-raises-staggering-sum-of-cash-in-24-hours-since-verdict?topStoryPosition=1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">poured</a> into the Trump campaign as the former president raised over $50 million in the 24 hours after the jury&#8217;s verdict, his campaign said. The hush-money trial has been blasted by legal experts who worry that criminal prosecutions of political opponents will become the norm in the U.S.
While a pardon of Trump from a Democratic governor is highly unlikely, the presumptive GOP presidential nominee has other avenues to challenge his conviction. Legal scholar and George Washington University Law School professor Jonathan Turley <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/turley-weighs-in-on-what-comes-next-following-trumps-guilty-verdict" target="_blank" rel="noopener">explained</a> in a blog post published on Friday that, eventually, Trump&#8217;s appeal of the verdict could reach the Supreme Court, adding that he believes “convictions will be overturned.”
“Indeed, moments like this require us to take a leap of faith in a nation that remains committed to the rule of law. Manhattan is neither the entirety of the country nor the legal system. I believe that these convictions will be overturned, but it will take time,” Turley wrote. “Judge Merchan committed, in my view, layers of reversible error. Eventually, this case may reach the United States Supreme Court.”

“And the Constitution means something,” Severino added. “It means, if anything, you cannot jail political opponents because you don’t like what the American people are going to vote for.”

Hochul&#8217;s remarks about black children in the Bronx drew pushback from fellow politicians, including members of the Democratic Party from the Bronx, and others.
Bronx Assembly Member Amanda Septimo, a Democrat, issued a <a href="https://twitter.com/AmandaSeptimo/status/1787584438668263793" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a> that said the comments were &#8220;harmful, deeply misinformed, and genuinely appalling.&#8221;

Corinne Obongo Golden, a member of the group Africa is Everywhere, became heated at the hearing, telling councilmembers, &#8220;This is unacceptable. This is shameful time in New York history. This city is not friendly for all people. It is anti-African and xenophobic.&#8221;
&#8220;Africans deserve dignity and respect. We are not animals,&#8221; she continued. &#8220;I&#8217;m so upset &#8230; I want all my fellow Africans to know what it is that they will face if they come to New York City.&#8221;
&#8220;They are here to show you that they belong, and that they are here and that they should not be erased. Please listen to them,&#8221; said Patrice Lawrence, executive director of the UndocuBlack Network.
Other migrants held a rally outside City Hall prior to the hearing to air their grievances.
“We have issues with housing. We don’t have work. A lot of us weren’t able to apply for asylum yet, because we don’t have the means to pay the lawyers,” one migrant <a href="https://ny1.com/nyc/manhattan/politics/2024/04/16/black-migrants-call-on-city-to-provide-equitable-and-fair-services" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>, speaking through an interpreter.
Several local lawmakers showed up at the rally as well and echoed the calls from migrants for better services.
“Our color should not determine what service we get in New York City, because when every once else comes they get the services,” said Councilmember Mercedes Narcisse, who is Haitian American and a Democrat representing Brooklyn.
New York has seen an influx of more than 180,000 illegal migrants over the past two years creating a crisis that has strained the city’s budget and caused officials to plead for federal help. As of last month, the top African countries from which migrants come to New York City and end up in the city&#8217;s care <a href="https://ny1.com/nyc/manhattan/politics/2024/04/16/black-migrants-call-on-city-to-provide-equitable-and-fair-services" target="_blank" rel="noopener">are</a> Guinea, Senegal, and Mauritania.

New York Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul ordered New York landmarks lit in light blue, pink, and white on Easter Sunday to celebrate a &#8220;Transgender Day of Visibility.&#8221;
Hochul issued a <a href="https://www.governor.ny.gov/sites/default/files/2024-03/Transgender-Day-of-Visibility_2024.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">proclamation</a> last week recognizing March 31 as the day &#8220;to reaffirm our commitment to see beyond the gender binary and create equity for New Yorkers of trans experience.&#8221; The commemoration was first aligned with that date more than a decade ago by a transgender activist as a way to honor transgender-identifying people.
President Joe Biden became the first president to recognize &#8220;Transgender Day of Visibility&#8221; from the White House after he took office. This year, the day coincided with Easter, a Christian holy day that celebrates the resurrection of Jesus. The date of Easter changes each year with the lunar calendar.
Following Biden’s example, Hochul issued a proclamation ordering New York landmarks to be bathed in colors representing the transgender flag. Some of the landmarks to glow with transgender flag colors include the Empire State Plaza, Niagara Falls, and the One World Trade Center, according to <a href="https://dailycaller.com/2024/03/30/kathy-hochul-nyc-landmarks-lit-up-pink-white-and-blue-easter-celebrate-transgender-day-of-visibility/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Daily Caller</a>.
“The International Transgender Day of Visibility is a celebration of gender diversity and authenticity,” Hochul’s proclamation says. “In doing so, New York State continues to set an example to our nation and the world, that we embrace all people and all communities as a state where transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming individuals are not just accepted, but seen and valued.”
Hochul issued an Easter message on social media, encouraging “hope, kindness, and compassion” and Easter egg hunts for children. She did not mention Christianity or Jesus.

A family member of slain NYPD officer Jonathan Diller ripped Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul to her face and told her that her presence was unwelcome at the Friday wake for the fallen officer, a source told <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/03/30/us-news/jonathan-dillers-family-told-kathy-hochul-she-had-his-blood-on-her-hands-report/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The New York Post</a>.
A video of an <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/hochul-gets-frosty-greeting-at-slain-ny-police-officers-wake-guests-applaud-as-she-leaves-report" target="_blank" rel="noopener">exchange</a> between Hochul and a man attending Diller&#8217;s wake was posted to social media and showed the man getting animated while he talked with the governor. Hochul and her team got back into an SUV and left the wake after the exchange.

The source told the Post that a family member of Diller &#8220;was going crazy&#8221; on Hochul, telling her, “We don’t want you here. You’re not wanted here. You have blood on your hands. If you want to do something, change the bail laws.&#8221; CBS New York also <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/newyork/news/nypd-officer-jonathan-diller-wake-day-2-long-island-massapequa-park/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> that Hochul&#8217;s appearance was received poorly by Diller&#8217;s family members, who slammed her record on criminal justice policy.
Diller, a husband and father who had served three years on the force, was shot in the stomach while making a traffic stop Monday evening in Queens. The suspect in the shooting was identified as 34-year-old Guy Rivera, who was sitting in the passenger seat of the car pulled over by Diller when he allegedly pulled out a handgun and fired at the officer. Rivera has 21 prior arrests and was released from prison in 2021 after serving five years for criminal possession of a controlled substance, according to the Post. He was also in prison from 2011 to 2014 for first-degree assault.
The officer&#8217;s widow, who has a 1-year-old son with Diller, also reportedly had a sharp exchange with Hochul.
“[It looked] like she was telling [Hochul] off,” one witness told the New York Post. “It didn’t look like the widow had a kind word to say.”
Another witness told the Post that the governor and the young widow had a “short, respectful conversation” during the roughly 10 to 15 minutes Hochul was inside. More bystanders said the governor and the widow discussed “policy” during their brief encounter.
On Saturday, Hochul said that flags would be flown at half-staff at all state buildings in honor of the fallen officer.

“To Officer Diller’s family, and all of the other brave men and women of law enforcement who put your lives on the line every day, we love you, we appreciate you, and we will always stand with you!” Trump said.
In her eulogy at her husband’s funeral on Saturday, Diller&#8217;s widow called his death “devastating” and “senseless&#8221; and demanded change, <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/03/30/us-news/slain-nypd-officer-jonathan-diller-funeral-live-updates-photos-reactions/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to the Post.

Hochul arrived at Diller’s wake at around 1:45 p.m. on Friday and went inside to meet with the slain officer’s widow, Stephanie. One witness to the exchange said that the 29-year-old widow appeared to tell off the Democratic governor.

As Hochul exited the building, people inside told the governor to get out, according to the outlet.

In the wake of Diller’s death, progressive crime policies such as the bail reform law enacted in New York in 2020 have come under intense scrutiny. Critics say that lowering and eliminating cash bail and loosening restrictions on suspected criminals has contributed to the state’s recidivism problem.
In a press conference on Tuesday after Diller’s death, New York City Mayor Eric Adams said that local laws were not addressing several significant problems contributing to crime in New York.
“You&#8217;re going to keep coming up with the same three items: severe mental health, random acts of violence, recidivism, over and over again. And what&#8217;s interesting is that our practices, laws, and policies are not going after those three issues,” Adams said.
Former President Donald Trump <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-calls-for-return-to-law-and-order-at-wake-for-slain-ny-police-officer" target="_blank" rel="noopener">attended</a> Diller’s wake on Thursday and called the officer’s death “a horrible thing” that is “happening all too often.”
“We have to stop it, we have to stop it. We have to get back to law and order. We have to do a lot of things differently because this is not working. This is happening too often,” Trump said in brief remarks. The former president visited with the Diller family and stayed at the wake for about 40 minutes before departing.

Hostin made the comments directly to Hochul&#8217;s face during the New York Democrat&#8217;s Wednesday appearance on ABC&#8217;s &#8220;The View,&#8221; complaining about the optics and arguing that there was no real need for the added security.
&#8220;Governor, after a series of high profile crime on New York City subways, right, you deployed hundreds of state police and National Guard troops into the subway system,&#8221; Hostin began. &#8220;But since the pandemic, you have done a wonderful job, overall crime is down in the city, so my question to you is, why now? Why deploy now to the subway?&#8221;
Hostin went on to ask Hochul how she&#8217;d respond to fellow Democrats who referred to the move as &#8220;theatrics that play into Republican narratives that blue cities are poorly-run war zones.&#8221;

Cohost Joy Behar then pivoted to address the topic of bail reform, noting that people who probably should be in jail were being returned to the streets and going right back to committing crimes — whether they be in the subway system or on the streets of the city.
Hochul again stated that her job was to keep New Yorkers safe — and said that she was happy to take criticism all day long for doing just that — but she shifted the blame for her state&#8217;s bail reform laws to former Governor Andrew Cuomo (D-NY), who resigned amid multiple sexual misconduct scandals.
&#8220;I inherited from my predecessor and the legislature before – they took the bail laws and watered them down and made it impossible for judges to look at the whole picture of the crime and the person, what they&#8217;re doing,&#8221; she explained.

New York City is reimplementing some tough-on-crime policies while surging police officers into the city’s subway system amid a spike in crime.
Democratic Mayor Eric Adams announced the revamped approach to crime during a press briefing on Tuesday. Adams’ efforts are supported by New York Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul, who committed state resources to the crackdown.
“We are going to continuously make sure we show a visible presence to deal with how people are feeling in our subway system right now,” Adams said, according to <a href="https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/nypd-subway-crime-security-check/5196047/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NBC New York</a>. “When I ride, people say, ‘Eric, nothing makes me feel safer than seeing that officer walking through the system, walking trains.’”
The city intends to increase police presence in the subway system train as they work 12-hour shifts. Adams said the change could be a significant deterrent to would-be criminals. The state is supporting the surge with 1,000 additional officers composed of 750 national guardsmen and 250 state police, according to the <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/03/06/us-news/gov-hochul-to-deploy-1000-national-guardsman-state-cops-to-carry-out-bag-checks-in-nyc-subways/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">New York Post</a>.
“These brazen heinous attacks on our subway system will not be tolerated,” Hochul said on Wednesday. The crackdown on crime in New York City comes after a spate of violence in the city&#8217;s subway, including three New Yorkers fatally shot on the subway this year.
Part of the plan to curb criminals plaguing the city is to reimplement stop-and-search of riders’ bags at train stations, a move reminiscent of the stop-and-frisk policy that ended under Adams’ predecessor, former Democratic Mayor Bill de Blasio. Stop-and-frisk ended after de Blasio, who ran for mayor on reforming the practice, sought a resolution to a years-long court battle over the policy, deemed unconstitutional by a federal judge. 
Adams has <a href="https://ny1.com/nyc/all-boroughs/news/2021/05/25/eric-adams-explains-why-he-supports-stop-and-frisk--when-it-s-used-legally" target="_blank" rel="noopener">expressed</a> support in the past for aspects of stop-and-frisk.
On Tuesday, Adams said police would search bags at train platforms to check for weapons and potential weapons, such as knives, box cutters, and firearms.
“We are reinstituting bag checks. There are several things we are reinstituting in the system,” Adams said, according to <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/newyork/news/new-york-city-reinstituting-bag-checks-to-combat-rising-subway-crime/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CBS News</a>.
The city is also looking at getting machine detectors, similar to those used at airports, to scan riders.
“We’re definitely on the pathway of coming up with some new technology that&#8217;s going to help us identify weapons, as well as guns. My big thing is guns,” Adams said.

“Governor Hochul has made historic commitments to make our subways safer, from security cameras to mental health personnel, and tomorrow she will unveil new legislation to protect riders, new State personnel to assist NYPD with bag checks, and other new measures to keep New Yorkers safe,” a representative from Hochul’s office said, according to NBC.
