White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt dismantled a narrative that President Donald Trump is targeting blue states in his quest to get crime under control nationwide.
When a reporter asked Leavitt if Trump will work with GOP-led states to tackle crime, the press secretary said the premise of the question reflects a false mainstream narrative.
&#8220;Yes, there is crime in red states. Of course, there is crime in all states, but the crime in these cities is all in cities that are run by Democrats. If you look at the list of the top 20 high-crime cities in the United States, every single one, with the exception of one in Louisiana, is run by a Democrat.&#8221;
These Democrat leaders, Leavitt continued, have supported soft-on-crime policies, including cashless bail, which is when suspects do not have to pay any bail to be released from jail while awaiting trial.
Highlighting Jackson, Mississippi &#8212; a blue city in a red state, Leavitt noted the city &#8220;eliminated cash bail for virtually all misdemeanor cases.&#8221; The city also acts like a de facto sanctuary jurisdiction.
Similarly, Birmingham, Alabama, passed a resolution &#8220;committing to establish sanctuary policies,&#8221; the press secretary added.
&#8220;If you actually look at the facts, there are cities that are run by Democrats &#8230; and they have all supported these disastrous policies, which allow repeated career criminals back onto the streets to further commit acts of violence.&#8221;
Trump, Leavitt said, wants to work with &#8220;anyone across this country who wants to end these horrible policies and bring law and order to our streets.&#8221;

Indeed, the vast majority of high crime and violent crime cities across the nation are run by Democrats, and more specifically, adopt soft-on-crime policies, like cashless bail and other so-called justice reforms that routinely hurt victims.
For example, the top-five most violent cities in the U.S., based on the violent crime rate per 100,000 residents, are Memphis, Detroit, Baltimore, Houston, and Nashville. They are all run by Democrats.
President Donald Trump has already worked with D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, a Democrat, to quickly clean up our nation&#8217;s capital. He&#8217;s also said he plans on deploying National Guardsmen to other violent cities, including Chicago.

President Donald Trump was critical of Israel’s strike in Doha, Qatar, that targeted Hamas leaders, with White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt saying on Tuesday that the administration warned the Qatari government of the “impending attack.”
Leavitt read a prepared statement during the White House press briefing, stating that the administration was notified by the U.S. military of an impending Israeli strike and that special envoy Steve Witkoff gave the Qataris a heads-up before the bombing. While Trump was critical of Israel’s action to strike a target inside the capital of one of America’s “close” allies, he also acknowledged that taking out Hamas “is a worthy goal.”
“Unilaterally bombing inside Qatar, a sovereign nation and close ally of the United States that is working very hard and bravely taking risks with us to broker peace, does not advance Israel or America’s goals,” Leavitt said, reading from the statement. “However, eliminating Hamas, who have profited off the misery of those in Gaza, is a worthy goal. President Trump immediately directed special envoy Witkoff to inform the Qataris of the impending attack, which he did.”

The largest U.S. military base in the Middle East is located in Qatar, just southwest of Doha. Trump has strengthened his ties with Qatar during his second term, despite <a href="https://newsroom.ap.org/editorial-photos-videos/detail?itemid=31ab6ea4e7179489d559c067879defcc&amp;mediatype=video&amp;source=youtube">accusing</a> the country of funding terrorism during his first term in the White House. In May, Trump visited Qatar and <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/fact-sheets/2025/05/fact-sheet-president-donald-j-trump-secures-historic-1-2-trillion-economic-commitment-in-qatar/">signed</a> a massive economic agreement with the government.
“The president views Qatar as a strong ally and friend of the United States and feels very badly about the location of this attack,” Leavitt added. The White House statement reiterated Trump’s call for Hamas to release the remaining hostages in Gaza and to work out an end to the war.
Trump spoke to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after the strike on Hamas leadership in Doha and made his concerns “very clear,” according to Leavitt. The president also spoke to the Emir and Prime Minister of Qatar, “and thanked them for their support and friendship,” assuring them “that such a thing will not happen again on their soil.”
“President Trump believes this unfortunate incident could serve as an opportunity for peace,” Leavitt added.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt tore into her predecessor, former Press Secretary Jen Psaki, over an X post attacking those who responded to Wednesday&#8217;s tragic school shooting by offering prayers.
During Thursday&#8217;s briefing, Leavitt told members of the Press Corps that she had seen Psaki&#8217;s post and thought it was extremely disrespectful of her to dismiss the beliefs of many Americans who value prayer.

The White House launched an official TikTok account on Tuesday, taking advantage of its more than 150 million U.S. users to spread the messages of President Donald Trump.
Trump has a soft spot for the popular app, crediting it with helping him gain support among young voters when he defeated Democrat Kamala Harris in the November 2024 presidential election.
Past intelligence assessments have said the short video app&#8217;s owners are beholden to the Chinese government and that it could be used to influence Americans.
“The Trump administration is committed to communicating the historic successes President Trump has delivered to the American people with as many audiences and platforms as possible,&#8221; White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said as the site went live.
&#8220;President Trump’s message dominated TikTok during his presidential campaign, and we’re excited to build upon those successes and communicate in a way no other administration has before,” she said.
The account, @whitehouse, began operation on Tuesday evening, with the aim of communicating the president&#8217;s policies, a White House official said.

WASHINGTON — White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt tore into the White House press corps on Tuesday afternoon, accusing the media of &#8220;negative and downright false coverage&#8221; of President Donald Trump and his efforts to bring peace between Russia and Ukraine.
Leavitt spoke from the James S. Brady Briefing Room podium, where she argued that &#8220;much of the left-wing media has been actively rooting against the president of the United States in the pursuit of peace&#8221; from the very beginning of Trump&#8217;s peace-making efforts.
&#8220;Initially, the media ridiculously claimed that President Trump was somehow beholden to Russia for even agreeing to have a face-to-face discussion with President Putin inside of the United States,&#8221; Leavitt argued. &#8220;The media said President Trump was making a grave mistake by, quote, &#8216;legitimizing&#8217; Putin.  They were aghast that President Trump would treat another world leader like a world leader.&#8221;
The White House press secretary accused the press of &#8220;relentlessly&#8221; attacking the president and claiming that he suffered a &#8220;major defeat&#8221; for not leaving that initial meeting with Vladimir Putin with a final agreement — &#8220;even though he said, heading into that meeting, this was a meeting to listen and to understand how to move the ball forward,&#8221; Leavitt argued.

Leavitt pointed to the pundits, hosts, reporters, and &#8220;so-called experts in the foreign policy establishment&#8221; who suggested over the weekend that the U.S.-Russia bilateral talks had been a failure, though President Trump &#8220;has solved seven global conflicts in seven months&#8221; and &#8220;brokered the Abraham Accords in his first term, on top of more than half a dozen other peace deals this year alone.&#8221;
And she reminded the press that the president of Ukraine and all the major leaders of Europe flew across the Atlantic to meet with Trump at the White House because of the progress that was made in that meeting with Putin.
&#8220;It was highly productive,&#8221; Leavitt said of the Trump and Putin meeting, &#8220;and it was successful.&#8221;

Leavitt&#8217;s remarks caused a stir not only in the briefing room, but among other members of the president&#8217;s administration. The White House press secretary was following up on a promise she had made during her very first briefing in January: to hold the press accountable.
&#8220;While I vow to provide the truth from this podium, we ask that all of you in this room hold yourselves to that same standard,&#8221; she told the assembled press in late January. &#8220;We know for a fact there have been lies that have been pushed by many legacy media outlets in this country about this president, about his family, and we will not accept that.&#8221;
&#8220;We will call you out when we feel that your reporting is wrong or there is misinformation about this White House,&#8221; she warned. &#8220;So, yes, I will hold myself to the truth, and I expect everyone in this room to do the same.&#8221;

Leavitt has certainly held true to her promise, singling out reporters when she considers their questions unfair or duplicitous. On Tuesday, for example, a New York Times reporter questioned Leavitt: &#8220;If the point is to get everybody on the same page, why wouldn&#8217;t Trump just take the call from Putin while the other leaders were in the room. He said it would be disrespectful to do that, but why is that disrespectful?&#8221;
The reporter was referring to Trump&#8217;s move to leave the room to take a private call from President Putin on Monday amid negotiations with European leaders.
&#8220;With all due respect,&#8221; responded Leavitt with a smile, &#8220;only a reporter from the New York Times would ask a question like that.&#8221;
A White House official reminded The Daily Wire that the president himself repeatedly called out the media and similar naysayers on Truth Social only a few days ago, reminding his critics: &#8220;Despite all of my lightweight and very jealous critics, I’ll get it done — I always do!!!&#8221;
&#8220;The president set the tone in his Truth Social posts over the past few days — we are not going to allow the left-wing legacy media to derail the progress made in this historic peace process,&#8221; the White House official told The Daily Wire. &#8220;President Trump has broken a three and a half year deadlock and the media wants you to believe that’s somehow actually a failure. Karoline, following the president’s lead, is cutting through their dishonest narrative and taking the truth directly to the American people.&#8221;
And Leavitt chimed in further at the end of the day on Tuesday.
&#8220;From the beginning of this process, much of the left-wing media has been actively rooting against the President of the United States in his pursuit of peace,&#8221; she argued. &#8220;President Trump finally broke the deadlock between Russia and Ukraine and created a real opportunity for a lasting peace for the first time in 3.5 years of brutal war.&#8221;
&#8220;But instead of accurately reporting the facts, dishonest outlets are actively trying to sabotage these peace efforts,&#8221; she concluded, reiterating her statement during the briefing: &#8220;This is why Americans’ trust in the mass media is at its lowest point in more than five decades.&#8221;

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt provided an update on Thursday morning regarding President Donald Trump&#8217;s federal operation to combat violent crime in Washington, D.C., saying that 45 more people were arrested on Wednesday night.
In addition to the 45 arrests made by federal authorities in collaboration with D.C. police, federal agents also detained 29 suspected illegal immigrants, Leavitt said. The charges against those arrested overnight on Wednesday included second- and first-degree assault and distribution of illegal drugs and narcotics. Authorities also seized three illegal firearms while making some of those arrests.
&#8220;In addition to that, there were 29 illegal aliens who were removed off of Washington, D.C., streets last night, many of whom had final orders of removal,&#8221; the White House press secretary told &#8220;Fox &amp; Friends.&#8221; &#8220;So these results are happening night after night because of the efforts of this federal task force that [is] working alongside the Metropolitan Police Department, who agree with this effort.&#8221;
&#8220;While Democrats want to rant and rave and coddle criminals, President Trump wants to put them behind bars, and that&#8217;s what this task force is focused on doing for the next 28 days,&#8221; Leavitt added.
Leavitt also argued that the &#8220;huge law enforcement presence&#8221; in the streets of the nation&#8217;s capital is deterring more violent crime.

FBI Director Kash Patel said on Tuesday that his agents assisted in the arrest of at least 10 people, including one arrest &#8220;on a search warrant for a prior murder charge.&#8221; Democratic Congressional and city leaders continue to push back on Trump&#8217;s plan to address D.C.&#8217;s violent crime. D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser argues that crime in the capital &#8220;is at its lowest level in 30 years.&#8221;

The president disagreed, and he took to Truth Social on Wednesday evening to cast doubt on the city&#8217;s official crime data.

The president notched another major victory on Thursday when Washington, D.C., Police Chief Pamela A. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt unloaded on CNN reporter Kaitlan Collins during Wednesday&#8217;s White House briefing, accusing her of fomenting &#8220;chaos and distrust&#8221; among President Donald Trump&#8217;s cabinet and assuring her that her efforts would be unsuccessful.
Leavitt, flanked by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, detailed some of the findings revealed by a congressional report that had been released just hours earlier — a report that outlined the troubling actions taken by members of former President Obama&#8217;s administration and the intelligence community.

Leavitt noted that multiple reports had confirmed Russia&#8217;s attempts to meddle in the 2016 election, but said that evidence showed the Obama administration had pushed fabricated information from the Steele Dossier — which had been funded by Hillary Clinton&#8217;s campaign — suggesting that Trump had actively colluded with the Russians toward that end.
&#8220;And [Rubio] also said at that time we discovered deeply troubling actions taken by the FBI, under [Director James] Comey, particularly their acceptance and willingness to rely on the Steele Dossier without verifying its methodology,&#8221; Leavitt continued, also pointing out the fact that many legacy media outlets had also run with the information in the Steele Dossier without being terribly curious about its veracity.

WASHINGTON — White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt celebrated news Thursday that multiple hospitals have halted their transgender procedures for children, telling reporters that President Donald Trump &#8220;wants to protect the innocence of children.&#8221;
Leavitt highlighted news that the largest provider of so-called &#8220;gender-affirming care,&#8221; the Center for Trans Youth Health and Development at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, <a href="https://apnews.com/article/la-trans-youth-center-closing-34d27684692c95b4f7c3266c55a71d38">is closing in response</a> to the Trump administration&#8217;s promise to cut federal funding for institutions that are transitioning children.
That program is one of a number that are shutting down or halting the irreversible treatments for children — Chicago&#8217;s Rush University Medical Center &#8220;paused&#8221; puberty blocker and hormone replacement therapy for children, according to policy documents <a href="https://blockclubchicago.org/2025/07/15/rush-medical-center-rolls-back-gender-affirming-care-for-minors-as-pressure-from-trump-mounts/">covered by a local outlet</a>.
Asked by The Daily Wire during the White House press briefing on Thursday if the nation should expect to see more closures, Leavitt responded: &#8220;The president spoke a lot about this issue, which is a political issue, but also really a cultural issue that impacts children and families. He talked about it a lot on the campaign, and I think he was quite surprised by the uptick we were seeing in the embracement by the Democrat Party when it comes to the chemical castration and mutilation of young, innocent bodies.&#8221;

&#8220;The president made it a very early priority to sign very strong executive orders to cut off the funding for any hospital or any medical facility in this country that provides such barbaric procedures,&#8221; Leavitt stressed. &#8220;And, as a result of that strong policy and the president&#8217;s strong common sense position on this issue, we&#8217;ve had such an overwhelming response, which is great for children &#8230;&#8221;
The White House press secretary then listed off a number of these hospitals that have halted their transgender programs for children.
&#8220;Phoenix Children&#8217;s Hospital has stopped providing puberty blockers and hormone therapy to minors,&#8221; she said. &#8220;In California, Stanford Medicine ended sex change surgeries for minors. Children&#8217;s Hospital Los Angeles is closing its center for Trans Youth Health and Development surgical program. In Illinois, Lurie Children&#8217;s Hospital of Chicago stopped sex change surgeries.&#8221;
&#8220;Again, let&#8217;s think about what we&#8217;re talking about here,&#8221; Leavitt told the assembled reporters. &#8220;Sex change surgeries for minors. These are barbaric practices that no children, no child, innocent child should have to endure.&#8221;
&#8220;The president wants to protect the innocence of children, and I know the vast majority of Americans support him in that effort,&#8221; she added. &#8220;This is a wildly popular and common sense endeavor this administration has taken, and we&#8217;ve seen many of these medical institutions have followed through with the president&#8217;s executive orders, but we’ll continue to take further action on this important issue.”

The White House addressed speculation around President Donald Trump&#8217;s swollen legs and bruised right hand on Thursday.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump underwent medical testing and received a diagnosis of &#8220;chronic venous insufficiency&#8221; in his legs, but remains in good health.
&#8220;I know that many in the media have been speculating about bruising on the president&#8217;s hand and also swelling in the president&#8217;s legs,&#8221; White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters at Thursday&#8217;s press briefing.
&#8220;So in the effort of transparency, the president wanted me to share a note from his physician with all of you today,&#8221; she said.

Leavitt read a memo from Dr. Sean Barbabella, a Navy doctor who serves as physician to the president
Barbabella wrote that in recent weeks, Trump noted &#8220;mild swelling in his lower legs,&#8221; and the president&#8217;s concern was &#8220;thoroughly evaluated by the White House medical unit&#8221; out of an &#8220;abundance of caution.&#8221;
Ultrasounds to assess blood flow in both of his legs found &#8220;chronic venous insufficiency,&#8221; which the president&#8217;s physician called a &#8220;benign, common condition, particularly in individuals over the age of 70.&#8221;
Chronic venous insufficiency involves blood pooling in the legs, sometimes causing varicose veins, and can be caused by prolonged standing.
Trump also got bloodwork done, including a comprehensive metabolic panel, a complete blood count, a coagulation profile, a blood clot test, a heart failure test, and testing for cardiac biomarkers, his doctor said.
&#8220;All results were within normal limits,&#8221; Barbabella wrote.
An echocardiogram also showed &#8220;normal cardiac structure and function,&#8221; the president&#8217;s physician said.
&#8220;Importantly, there was no evidence of deep vein thrombosis or arterial disease,&#8221; Barbabella wrote. &#8220;No signs of heart failure, renal impairment, or systemic illness were identified.&#8221;
Trump&#8217;s doctor also addressed recent photos of Trump showing bruising on the back of his right hand and said the culprits are aspirin and the president frequently shaking hands with people.
&#8220;This is consistent with minor soft tissue irritation from frequent handshaking and the use of aspirin, which is taken as part of a standard, cardiovascular prevention regimen. This is a well-known and benign side effect of aspirin therapy,&#8221; Barbabella wrote.
&#8220;The president remains in excellent health, which I think all of you witness on a daily basis here,&#8221; Leavitt said.
The White House&#8217;s detailed report on Trump&#8217;s health comes after the last administration was not as forthcoming about President Joe Biden&#8217;s health.
Biden&#8217;s behavior during the last years of his presidency sparked concerns among the public that he might already be senile. His disastrous debate performance in June of last year solidified those concerns and led to Biden dropping out of the 2o24 presidential race.
Last week, Biden&#8217;s former doctor pled the Fifth before the House Oversight Committee, which subpoenaed him to testify in an investigation into the alleged cover-up of Biden&#8217;s cognitive decline.
Invoking the Fifth Amendment means someone is using their right not to be &#8220;compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself.&#8221;
Then on Wednesday, a Jill Biden aide also pled the Fifth in the same investigation and declined to answer questions.
The Biden officials&#8217; refusal to testify has only fueled speculation about a cover-up and heightened concerns about the legitimacy of executive actions Biden took during his last years as president.

Asked by Fox News Senior White House Correspondent Jacqui Heinrich to clarify what Trump meant by calling the Epstein case a &#8220;hoax,&#8221; Leavitt said during Thursday&#8217;s White House press briefing, &#8220;The president is referring to the fact that Democrats have now seized on this as if they ever wanted transparency when it comes to Jeffrey Epstein, which is an asinine suggestion for any Democrat to make.&#8221;
&#8220;The Democrats had control of this building, the White House, for four years, and they didn&#8217;t do a dang thing when it came to transparency in regards to Jeffrey Epstein and his heinous crimes. It was this president who directed the Department of Justice and the attorney general to do an exhaustive review of all files related to Jeffrey Epstein, which they did,&#8221; she added.
Leavitt argued that the investigation into the Epstein files was led by &#8220;great patriots&#8221; and &#8220;some of the most trusted voices in the Republican Party movement,&#8221; referring to Attorney General Pam Bondi, FBI Director Kash Patel, and FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino. Last week, the DOJ concluded that it did not find evidence of a client list existing and concluded that Epstein committed suicide in his jail cell in 2019.
&#8220;They spent many months going through all of the files related to Jeffrey Epstein, and they concluded what they found in that memo, which they drafted and they released,&#8221; Leavitt said. &#8220;So the president has been transparent. He has followed through on his promises to the American people, but he doesn&#8217;t like to see Democrats and the mainstream media covering this like it&#8217;s the biggest story that the American people care about.&#8221;
Democrats have <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/elections/democrats-put-previous-misgivings-hit-trump-jeffrey-epstein-files-rcna218608" target="_blank" rel="noopener">latched</a> onto the issue to attack Trump, voting in the House to release the Epstein files, a move that Republicans <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/house-gop-rejects-claims-of-blocking-epstein-files-a-misunderstanding" target="_blank" rel="noopener">called</a> a political stunt and a power grab.
Later during the press briefing, Leavitt said that Trump &#8220;would not recommend a special prosecutor&#8221; to look into the Epstein case, adding that &#8220;the idea was floated from someone in the media.&#8221; The president would be open to revisiting the case further if the DOJ or FBI find any new information, according to Leavitt.
Earlier this week, Trump called those focusing on the Epstein controversy &#8220;pretty bad people&#8221; and defended Bondi&#8217;s handling of the case. Conservatives criticized Bondi after she said in February that she had Epstein&#8217;s client list on her desk, but then clarified months later that she meant that she was reviewing the Epstein files.

WASHINGTON—President Donald Trump signed a bipartisan bill Wednesday aimed at ending the fentanyl drug crisis while surrounded by mothers and fathers of young people who lost their lives to the deadly drug.
&#8220;We&#8217;ll be getting the drug dealers, pushers, and peddlers off our street, and we will not rest until we have ended the drug overdose epidemic,&#8221; he promised attendees in the East Room of the White House on Wednesday afternoon. Trump promised that the legislation would take &#8220;a historic step toward justice for every family touched by the fentanyl scourge.&#8221;
The HALT Fentanyl Act permanently schedules fentanyl-related substances as &#8220;Fentanyl Analogs,&#8221; a classification that would expire at the end of the month without the new legislation. An analog is a copycat fentanyl that has been chemically changed just enough to skirt the law, but is just as deadly. The White House argues it must be prosecuted in the same way.

The new legislation amends the Controlled Substances Act to permanently classify these illicit fentanyl knockoffs as Schedule 1. And it fulfills some key campaign promises of Trump, who has heavily messaged to his supporters that he will rein in the fentanyl crisis.
&#8220;For four years, Joe Biden and Democrats hardly muttered a word about the fentanyl crisis, which remains the number one leading cause of death in our country,&#8221; White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt shared in a statement ahead of the signing. &#8220;President Trump has made securing the border and ending the drug crisis a top priority, and today, he will further follow through on his commitment to the courageous fentanyl moms and dads who elected him to Make America Safe Again.&#8221;
A number of top Trump supporters who have been aggressive on border policy were also present at the event: Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin, Fox News contributor Sara Carter, U.S. Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff, Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa, and Senator Jim Banks of Indiana filled the first few rows and were named by the president.
House Speaker Mike Johnson arrived slightly late to the bill signing and quietly slid into a seat in the back, where a delighted mother and son duo were quick to take photos with him.
The president invited several of the angel parents in attendance to speak at the podium. One father, whose son Drew was tragically killed by fentanyl, told Trump on Wednesday afternoon: &#8220;Thank you, Mr. President, for stopping the border crossings. Full stop.&#8221;
&#8220;We were being gaslit,&#8221; he added, &#8220;and you came and lit a fire to that story, and we&#8217;re a lot safer for it.

The Trump administration is moving to end the requirement that passengers remove their shoes when going through airport security, according to multiple reports.
The much-hated shoe removal mandate, which has been in place since 2006, is being gradually phased out in the coming weeks, according to Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents who have told multiple news outlets. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the news on Tuesday morning. 
The phase-out began at Baltimore/Washington International Airport, Fort Lauderdale International Airport, Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, Portland International Airport, Philadelphia International Airport, and Piedmont Triad International Airport in North Carolina, CBS News <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/tsa-shoes-rule-expires/">reported</a>. 
On Tuesday morning, Leavitt posted, “Big news from [the Department of Homeland Security]!” in response to an X news post on the policy change.

“TSA and DHS are always exploring new and innovative ways to enhance the passenger experience and our strong security posture,” a TSA spokesman <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/07/07/travel/tsa-shoes-removal-airport-security.html">told</a> the New York Times on Monday. “Any potential updates to our security process will be issued through official channels.”
The news was first <a href="https://gateaccess.substack.com/p/exclusive-tsa-to-end-shoe-removal">reported</a> by Gate Access on July 4, which stated that the TSA had begun circulating the updated shoe guidance. Before the change, visitors enrolled in the TSA PreCheck program were permitted to keep their shoes, belts, and jackets on and were not required to remove laptops or liquids from their bags. 
Some conservative commentators praised the move from the Trump administration.

Still considered a threat years later, the shoe removal policy was first <a href="https://www.tsa.gov/timeline">instituted</a> in 2006 as a way to screen airline passengers for explosives. 
Reid, known as the shoe bomber, had homemade bombs containing 10 ounces of explosive materials hidden in his shoes that the FBI <a href="https://www.fbi.gov/history/artifacts/richard-reids-shoes">said</a> would have blown a hole in the plane’s fuselage if detonated successfully. After pleading guilty to eight terrorism-related charges, Reid was sentenced to life in prison.
