California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom sent a fundraising email shortly after former Rep. Eric Swalwell&#8217;s (D-CA) resignation amid sexual misconduct allegations, including rape accusations, using the vacancy to urge donors to help Democrats quickly reclaim the seat.
&#8220;With a very slim Republican majority in Congress, I was not going to give Mike Johnson even a single extra day before filling this seat,” Newsom wrote in the email, which was sent by his Campaign for Democracy PAC, according to <a href="https://x.com/jamesd0wns/status/2044510404596924828?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noopener">National Journal</a>.
Swalwell stepped down Tuesday as multiple investigations were launched into the allegations. He is now under investigation by the Justice Department, the Manhattan District Attorney, and the Los Angeles County Sheriff&#8217;s Department. No charges have been filed against the Democrat, but the disturbing claims led to his resignation from Congress and exit from the California governor&#8217;s race.
At a Tuesday press conference, model Lonna Drewes accused Swalwell of raping her during an alleged 2018 encounter.
“He raped me, and he choked me. And while he was choking me, I lost consciousness,” Drewes said. “And I thought I died. I did not consent to any sexual activity.”
At least one other woman has claimed that Swalwell raped her. Others alleged that the Democrat sent them inappropriate messages over Snapchat, <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2026/04/10/us/eric-swalwell-sexual-misconduct-allegations-invs" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CNN</a> reported.
Despite the nature of the allegations, Newsom&#8217;s email did not address them directly, instead focusing on the political stakes of the vacancy and the narrow Republican majority in the House.
The message concluded with a fundraising appeal from Newsom&#8217;s political action committee, asking recipients to donate $35.
Newsom has said the special election, scheduled for August 18, is the earliest date allowed under state law.
Republicans criticized the move, arguing Newsom has not shown the same urgency in similar situations.
Besides rape accusations, others alleged that the Democrat sent them inappropriate messages over Snapchat, <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2026/04/10/us/eric-swalwell-sexual-misconduct-allegations-invs" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CNN</a> reported.
The timing has drawn criticism from Republicans, who argue Newsom has not applied the same urgency in similar situations.

Republicans currently hold a narrow 218-213 majority in the House, raising the stakes for quickly filling vacant seats.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) is facing scrutiny after new federal filings revealed his own political operation spent more than $1.5 million purchasing copies of his memoir, accounting for the majority of its total sales.
According to disclosures released Wednesday, Newsom’s PAC, the Campaign for Democracy, paid $1,561,875 to a book distributor to buy and distribute roughly 67,000 copies of his book, “Young Man in a Hurry: A Memoir of Discovery.” Those copies were then offered to donors in exchange for contributions of any amount.
The strategy proved effective in driving engagement. Tens of thousands of supporters responded to the pitch, with the PAC ultimately distributing books that made up roughly two-thirds of the memoir’s total print sales, which stand at just over 97,000 copies.
The arrangement raises questions about how Newsom’s book achieved its early commercial success. His team had previously touted strong sales and highlighted the memoir’s appearance on best-seller lists, including USA Today and New York Times <a href="http://lists.in/">lists</a>. In a March press release, the Newsom team <a href="https://x.com/briantylercohen/status/2029377086197252130">wrote</a>, “With more than 91,000 copies sold through organic, in-person and online, non-bulk purchases in the United States, the memoir surged on bestseller lists within hours of its release and has drawn readers from across the country eager to learn more about Newsom’s upbringing, early career, and the experiences that shaped his approach to leadership.”
Newsom’s office defended the approach, arguing the effort was both financially and politically effective. “We were thrilled with the response,” spokesman Nathan Click <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2026/04/16/us/politics/newsom-book-donors.html">told</a> The New York Times, adding that the PAC ultimately raised more money through the promotion than it spent on purchasing the books. “Our goal was to deepen the relationship between him and the millions of folks who have already expressed support.” Newsom does not receive royalties from books sold through the PAC.
The fundraising push began shortly after Newsom-backed Proposition 50, a redistricting measure designed to give Democrats an advantage in congressional maps, was approved by California voters. In emails to supporters, Newsom framed the book offer as part of a broader effort to replenish political resources for future electoral fights.
“We just spent a bunch of money on passing Prop 50,” he wrote at the time, “so now I need to refill the coffers … for the fights ahead.”
While it is not uncommon for political committees to use books as fundraising incentives, the scale of Newsom’s operation stands out. Comparable efforts have typically involved far smaller expenditures, including purchases tied to books by former Vice President Kamala Harris, whose affiliated PAC spent under $100,000 on similar promotions for her memoir earlier this year.
By contrast, Newsom’s seven-figure outlay represents the largest single expense for his PAC in the first quarter of 2026.
The arrangement blurs the line between political fundraising and self-promotion, effectively allowing a campaign apparatus to manufacture demand for a candidate’s personal publication. Supporters, however, contend the tactic is a “novel” extension of campaign outreach — using a candidate’s writing to engage voters while building a donor base.
The episode underscores how political campaigns are increasingly blending media, messaging, and fundraising into a single ecosystem, where books serve not just as policy platforms or autobiographical accounts, but as tools for mobilization and revenue generation.
For Newsom, the result is a memoir that reached best-seller status with significant backing from his own political network, raising questions about how success in the publishing world can or should be measured when politics and promotion are so closely intertwined.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom is facing pushback for the timing of the special election to replace former Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) in the Bay Area congressional district.
The special runoff election is set for August 18, but the primary will occur on June 16 in the deep blue district where Swalwell won his last election by nearly 36 percent — approximately two months after the congressman&#8217;s resignation.
Compare that to the timeline to replace Rep. Doug LaMalfa (R-CA), who passed away in early January: a special election primary won&#8217;t take place until June 2 before a potential runoff on August 4 in the deeply Republican district. In either primary race, a candidate needs over 50% of the vote to avoid a runoff.
Additionally, in January 2020, following the resignation of Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-CA), Gov. Newsom faced scrutiny over the decision not to have a special election at all, which left the seat vacant for almost an entire year.
“Ask Greg Abbott about the 18th congressional district in Texas,” Brandon Richards, deputy director for Rapid Response for Newsom’s office, told The Daily Wire when asked about the unusual timing. In Texas’ 18th Congressional District, Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) faced criticism from Democrats over the seat being left open for over a year.
“It&#8217;s another example of how Gavin Newsom, he doesn&#8217;t care about stripping people of their voice and their representation as long as it politically benefits him,” State Assemblyman Carl DeMaio (R-CA) said. DeMaio was a vocal critic of the decision to keep Hunter’s seat vacant, according to <a href="https://www.politico.com/states/california/story/2020/01/08/duncan-hunter-seat-will-remain-vacant-as-newsom-forgoes-special-election-1247432" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Politico</a>.
“If it’s a Republican seat, [Newsom] won&#8217;t call the special election at all, or he&#8217;ll try to delay it for as long as possible, as he did with LaMalfa. And if it&#8217;s a Democrat seat, ‘Oh, my goodness,’ he&#8217;s gonna basically stretch and tear every single logistical hurdle, in order to get the seat filled,” the lawmaker added.
Republicans currently hold an extremely narrow 218-213 majority in the House of Representatives, as mid-decade redistricting will drastically change the maps in California, Texas, and other states until after the 2030 census data is evaluated.
California added five Democrat-leaning seats for the November election with the passage of Prop. 50, while Texas added five Republican-leaning seats. Other states have taken similar measures, including Virginia, which will vote on April 21 on whether to create a 10-1 Democrat-leaning map.
Swalwell resigned on Tuesday following multiple allegations of sexual assault and harassment. He also opted to suspend his campaign to become California’s next governor — though many surveys showed that he was the highest polling Democrat in the crowded top-two primary — but he lost nearly all of his endorsements when the allegations became public.
“I am deeply sorry to my family, staff, and constituents for mistakes in judgment I’ve made in my past. I will fight the serious, false allegation made against me. However, I must take responsibility and ownership for the mistakes I did make,” he said in a statement as an expulsion vote loomed over him.
“Expelling anyone in Congress without due process, within days of an allegation being made, is wrong. But it’s also wrong for my constituents to have me distracted from my duties,” Swalwell wrote. “Therefore, I plan to resign my seat in Congress. I will work with my staff in the coming days to ensure they are able, in my absence, to serve the needs of the good people of the 14th congressional district.”

The Gavin-Newsom-fraud-fest spectacular continued last week as <a href="https://www.city-journal.org/article/california-in-home-supportive-services-program-fraud-gavin-newsom">reporting</a> from the City Journal revealed the massive scope of potential fraud within the In-Home Supportive Services Program, a California state program funded by Medicaid that allows people with no meaningful medical training to bill taxpayers for performing basic household tasks, or “homecare” for the elderly or disabled. It’s important for people to realize, though, that California is far from the only state with a homecare fraud problem. It’s almost certainly happening in your state too, and at a scale that will boggle your mind. The problem is so widespread, in fact, that I find myself compelled to do the unthinkable: defend Gavin Newsom.
To be clear, and to prevent him from running off with this headline, I am not even slightly vindicating Gavin Newsom. California’s fraud problem is massive and almost entirely Newsom’s fault…but not entirely. The same industrial-scale homecare fraud networks making headlines in California also exist, to a lesser extent, in every other state.
There are slight variations in laws and procedures between states, but the scam has worked essentially the same way nationwide for over a decade. Here’s how it usually works.
First, to provide homecare you need to create a company and submit the proper paperwork to Medicaid, which makes sure you meet the requirements, but nobody seems to be checking this paperwork closely. Fraudsters in <a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-ndga/pr/home-health-care-owner-sentenced-more-five-years-defrauding-georgia-medicaid">Georgia</a>, <a href="https://www.justice.gov/archives/opa/pr/three-individuals-convicted-93m-home-health-fraud-and-money-laundering-scheme">Florida</a>, and <a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-edmo/pr/home-health-care-operator-admits-defrauding-missouri-medicaid">Missouri</a> have been busted running their companies under stolen identities and nursing licenses for years.
Next, you need patients. To get patients, they usually must get a doctor’s referral certifying that they need homecare because of some disability or injury. This is an easily overcome obstacle. High-profile busts in <a href="https://www.justice.gov/archives/opa/pr/operators-louisiana-home-health-company-convicted-171-million-health-care-fraud-scheme">Louisiana</a>, <a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-ndca/pr/bay-area-doctor-convicted-health-care-fraud-and-kickback-scheme-referrals-medicare">California</a>, <a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-sdfl/pr/two-home-health-providers-agree-pay-702541-resolve-self-referral-allegations">Florida</a>, <a href="https://archives.fbi.gov/archives/chicago/press-releases/2012/nine-defendants-including-two-owners-of-a-home-health-care-agency-and-two-physicians-indicted-for-allegedly-paying-and-receiving-kickbacks-for-medicare-patient-referrals">Illinois</a>, <a href="https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/traditions-health-agrees-pay-34m-resolve-false-claims-act-liability-relating-home-health">Oklahoma</a>, and <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/detroit/news/13-michigan-residents-charged-in-nationwide-health-care-fraud-probe/">Michigan</a>, just to name a few, have found that scammers bribe doctors with kickbacks to write unnecessary referrals.
Now that the patient has their doctor’s note, they can choose a homecare company themselves or be assigned one by the state’s relevant authorities or medical professionals. Patients of scammers are often paid kickbacks. Many pick their family members or spouses to provide the homecare. In one particularly massive scheme, residents of <a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-dc/pr/owners-home-health-care-agency-sentenced-prison-taking-part-80-million-medicaid-fraud">Washington, D.C.</a> got their entire extended family together to bilk Medicaid of $80 million, spending it on mansions and sports cars. If it’s not a family business, though, you can always bribe “<a href="https://www.justice.gov/archives/opa/pr/home-health-care-company-owners-sentenced-67-million-health-care-fraud">patient marketers</a>” for clients, buy a roster of <a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-ndga/pr/home-health-care-owner-sentenced-more-five-years-defrauding-georgia-medicaid">existing patients</a> from another recently busted fraudster, or get a list of <a href="https://www.justice.gov/archives/opa/pr/three-individuals-convicted-93m-home-health-fraud-and-money-laundering-scheme">stolen identities</a> on the homecare black market.
Bribery is a theme. In a government marketplace with fixed prices, as always, the only way to compete in homecare is by doing it under the table.
Now that you have patients, you just need qualified people to provide the care and patients’ signatures to verify it. This step of the process is basically a joke. In <a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-wdva/pr/six-sentenced-healthcare-fraud-conspiracy-stole-10-million-medicaid-over-six-year">Virginia</a>, a company was caught trading cash for stacks of blank, signed patient certification forms. In <a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-ak/pr/anchorage-resident-indicted-health-care-fraud-scheme">Alaska</a>, a woman pretended her whole family was working for her homecare company and billed fake hours for each of them. In <a href="https://www.ksl.com/article/51436524/manager-of-sandy-in-home-health-provider-charged-with-medicaid-fraud">Utah</a>, workers were instructed to sit in their cars outside the house after jobs to maximize billing hours. Some homecare scammers have been caught because they’re working full-time jobs while supposedly doing homecare work, as in <a href="https://dojmt.gov/kalispell-man-receives-three-year-sentence-for-medicaid-fraud-scheme/">Montana</a> and <a href="https://www.wowt.com/2025/12/01/nebraska-auditor-finds-medicaid-fraud-dhhss-personal-care-program/">Nebraska</a>. Others have been busted for brazenly requesting payment for more than 24 hours of work in a single day, as in <a href="https://www.justice.gov/archives/opa/pr/medical-biller-sentenced-45-months-prison-role-4-million-health-care-fraud-scheme">Illinois</a> and <a href="https://nmdoj.gov/press-release/ag-balderas-secures-prison-sentence-of-former-personal-care-organization-owner-who-defrauded-medicaid-program-of-over-445000/">New Mexico</a>. Not only were they paid the full amount for these requests, but it also took years for anyone to notice.
Every step of the homecare process can be, and is, easily defrauded, and while California is one of the worst, they’re far from alone.
You’d be hard-pressed to find any state where a quick look through Medicaid spending data doesn’t reveal at least one seedy office building hosting a dozen homecare companies billing taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars per month to do basic household tasks for a suspiciously small number of patients. And, as with the Armenians in California and the Somalis in Minnesota, the companies in these Medicaid clusters are usually owned almost exclusively by immigrants from one or two countries in East Asia, the Middle East, or Africa.
<div>The homecare program should be reformed to minimize fraud. Caring for the sick at home instead of in hospitals is a good idea, but relying on the honesty of a few individuals makes the program vulnerable in America’s low-trust, multicultural society. Like other social safety net programs, Medicaid’s homecare is a relic from a time before the institutional, cultural, and moral decline that has given rise to figures like Gavin Newsom and places like modern Los Angeles.</div>
Gavin Newsom is doing nothing to put out the fire (double entendre intended) but he didn’t start it, and nearly every other state has a little homecare-fraud fire of its own that our institutions, built around a high-trust society, simply aren’t equipped to handle.

No One Is Safe: Homecare Fraud Schemes Are Ripping Off Americans In Every State

California Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell canceled a town hall event in Palm Desert on Thursday as his gubernatorial campaign is facing swirling allegations on social media over possible inappropriate conduct with female staffers.
The congressman’s campaign said the cancellation was because he was sick, according to <a href="https://www.kron4.com/news/california/rep-eric-swalwell-cancels-town-hall-in-palm-desert/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">KRON-4 News</a>, but that is not stopping the rest of the field from taking notice.
“Day 2 of [Swalwell] hiding from voters and reporters. That’s not leadership — that’s someone with something to hide,” Democrat challenger <a href="https://x.com/AVillaraigosa/status/2042417759951470809?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Antonio Villaraigosa</a> posted to X.
<a href="https://www.realclearpolling.com/polls/governor/general/2026/california/open_primary" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Multiple surveys</a> indicate that the congressman is the leading Democrat in the top-two primary election set for June, as he faces Trump-backed Republican Steve Hilton, billionaire climate activist Tom Steyer, Republican Chad Bianco, and numerous other Democrats.
As for the allegations against Swalwell, claims went viral on social media, including that he may have made interns sign non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) following misconduct. The details released so far have been minimal, as nobody with a direct accusation has come forward as of Friday.
“This false, outrageous rumor is being spread 27 days before an election begins by flailing opponents who have sadly teamed up with MAGA conspiracy theorists because they know Eric Swalwell is the frontrunner in this race,” Micah Beasley, a spokesperson for Swalwell’s campaign, told <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2026/04/07/swalwell-campaign-denies-claims-inappropriate-behavior-00862406?__cf_chl_rt_tk=mYi3F9GE14_ybENKunLywvXA90PEbdwX.jK8sSNGjms-1775839383-1.0.1.1-XtMq.iLVJtzMbj4xWrVvnpxVKfAvGLzhBUcwxtR87CE" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Politico</a> earlier this week.
One of the influencer accounts amplifying the accusations, “Mrs. Frazzled,” wrote in an X <a href="https://x.com/ms_frazzled/status/2042324565750399342?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noopener">post</a> on Thursday, “you can be frustrated with me. That’s fine!”
“I am using my platform to draw awareness to the fact that this is being investigated and that awareness has been so important,” the account wrote. “These women deserve to know they are not the only ones and more &amp; more people have come forward every day.”
Democratic activist Cheyenne Hunt, executive director of Gen-Z for Change, shared a screenshot to Instagram earlier this week regarding the NDA accusations and took to X to call the statement made to Politico by Beasley “forced, false, and a clear signal they are bracing for impact.”
“The Swalwell team also suggested that these women have ‘teamed up with MAGA’ – which is just gross, especially when so many are risking careers they built in democratic politics,” Hunt <a href="https://x.com/CheyenneHuntCA/status/2041882893761573227?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote</a>.
The accusations are not the only controversies that have entrenched Swalwell throughout the race, as he previously faced a lawsuit over his California residency, as well as concerns years later about his possible ties to a Chinese operative known as &#8220;Fang Fang.&#8221;
Whoever wins the general election will succeed Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA), who has not endorsed a candidate in the race.

In the span of a week, Jennifer Siebel Newsom has gone viral for saying she gives her sons dolls and suggesting criminals at San Quentin prison might be there for “accidents,” like her tragically backing over her sister with a golf cart. 
But the First Lady of California grew up in a conservative household, and her husband has previously claimed to be married to a Republican. 
“I grew up revering Ronald Reagan … my father did, so therefore we did,” she said. She added that even though her dad has always been “the biggest champion of women, especially marginalized and vulnerable women” that &#8220;unfortunately his politics led him in a direction that is sort of in conflict with seeing women as equal.”

Newsom grew up in an affluent neighborhood of California, ultimately attending Stanford University for both undergrad and graduate school. After school she moved to Hollywood to pursue a career in acting. During her film career, Siebel Newsom claims she was raped by popular film director Harvey Weinstein. She said Weinstein first approached her at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2005 when she was a producer and actress, and he was at the height of his Hollywood power. 
She said meeting him was like “the Red Sea was parting” and she found him “charming.&#8221; He invited her to his hotel, and she said she was nervous when directed to his hotel suite. When pressed about why she didn’t walk away she said, “Because you don’t say no to Harvey Weinstein.” 
Gavin Newsom later accepted campaign funds from Harvey Weinstein, which his wife called &#8220;complex.&#8221;
Newsom met her husband in 2006 when Gavin was serving as the mayor of San Francisco, and married two years later. In 2011, Siebel Newsom produced a documentary called &#8220;Miss Representation,&#8221; which is about sexism in American society. 
Despite her militant feminism, Gavin Newsom told a reporter in 2024 that he meets with Republicans every day because he &#8220;married one.&#8221;

A new poll sponsored by the California Democratic Party shows two Republican candidates still leading the governor’s race, increasing pressure on Democrats to consolidate their support or risk being shut out of the November general election.
<a href="https://cadem.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/4.7.26-CA-Voter-Index-Tracking-Survey-I-Topline.pdf">The EVITARUS poll</a>, released Tuesday, April 7, has Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco and conservative commentator Steve Hilton each receiving 14% of likely voters.
April&#8217;s poll mostly mirrors the <a href="https://cadem.org/cadem-chair-rusty-hicks-releases-new-california-voter-index-poll-results/">Democratic Party&#8217;s March survey</a>, with Hilton slipping two points to tie with Bianco.
Bay Area Congressman Eric Swalwell (D-CA) leads the Democratic field with 12% of the vote, with billionaire environmental activist Tom Steyer right behind at 11%. Former Orange County Congresswoman Katie Porter (D-CA) is winning 7%. The four other Democratic candidates each hold 4% of the vote or less.
24% of voters remain undecided.
The poll surveyed 1,200 likely California primary voters between March 31 and April 5, well before President Trump endorsed Steve Hilton.
“Steve can turn it around, before it is too late, and, as President, I will help him to do so!” Trump said. “With Federal help, and a Great Governor, like Steve Hilton, California can be better than ever before!”
Bianco criticized the endorsement in <a href="https://www.instagram.com/reel/DWzXeNHEpY9/?hl=en">a post</a> on social media Monday.
“For too long, politicians and insiders from Sacramento to Washington have tried to pick our leaders for us,” Bianco said. “That’s not leadership. That’s a coronation. And it&#8217;s exactly how we ended up with the failed leadership Californians are living with today.&#8221;

Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the wife of California Gov. Gavin Newsom, is once again under scrutiny, this time for comments she says were meant to “connect” with prison inmates, but which critics say reveal a tone-deaf and elitist perspective.
During a recent interview reflecting on conversations with juvenile offenders at San Quentin prison, Newsom described sharing a traumatic childhood story, the death of her older sister Stacey, in an effort to relate to inmates serving life sentences for violent crimes.

“I blame myself for her death,” Newsom said, before illustrating a comparison that has since drawn widespread criticism, “they ultimately were accused of committing these violent crimes and sentenced for life. And I think it shocked them that this blonde lady who was interviewing them had a similar story … but wasn’t punished the way they were, because clearly it was an accident — but theirs was probably an accident, too.”
The incident she referenced was a tragic accident from her childhood. Newsom was only 6 years old when her sister Stacey, 8, was killed while playing on golf carts during a family vacation in Hawaii. Stacey had been hiding behind Jennifer’s cart when it rolled backward, striking her.
This episode follows a string of high-profile comments from the self-described “First Partner” that have drawn criticism for sounding out of touch. On Monday, she framed the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/gavin-newsoms-wife-offers-bizarre-defense-of-kristi-noem-pam-bondi">removal of conservative women</a> from the Trump administration as evidence of systemic patriarchal oppression, despite openly disliking the officials in question.
The pattern echoes moments from her husband’s public commentary as well. Gov. Gavin Newsom faced backlash after <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/im-like-you-gavin-newsom-brags-to-black-mayor-about-his-960-sat-score">telling</a> Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens that he was “like you … I’m a 960 SAT guy,” a remark widely criticized as patronizing and implicitly racial. Both instances reveal a tendency to universalize personal experience and moralize it, often at the expense of nuance.
In Jennifer Newsom’s case, the comments may have been well-intentioned, rooted in real trauma and a desire to connect. But the optics: a privileged, self-described “blonde lady” comparing her childhood accident to inmates’ life sentences, have overshadowed the intended message.
The comments are infantilizing in a way that cannot be separated from her position as “first partner” of the governor of California. Life sentences in San Quentin are the result of serious, violent crimes — particularly since death row at the prison was largely <a href="https://deathpenaltyinfo.org/california-to-close-san-quentins-death-row-as-part-of-a-broader-prison-reform">decommissioned</a> and a moratorium placed on all executions by Gavin Newsom in 2019. By suggesting their situations are “probably accidents,” the remarks flatten complex legal and moral realities into an anecdotal moral lesson that feels more self-serving than enlightening. It is a rare example where empathy crosses over into condescension, alienating the very audience the message was meant to reach.
For a political and cultural elite class that emphasizes lived experience as a source of moral authority, these moments backfire. Rather than demonstrating empathy, they project privilege and misunderstanding, highlighting the gap between them and the voters they attempt to reach. And for a governor with national ambitions, every misstep in tone from him and his family becomes fodder for any voter trying to reconcile the Newsoms’ self-styled moral leadership with the realities of their everyday comments.

California Governor Gavin Newsom’s &#8220;first partner&#8221; Jennifer Siebel Newsom is going viral after a video resurfaced in which she said she gives her sons dolls and changes male protagonists in books to female protagonists when reading to her children.
The resurfaced conversation comes from a 2019 interview with the Los Angeles City Council President Nury Martinez honoring Women’s History Month. 
“I’ve given our boys dolls … to learn that care and caregiving is not just an activity reserved for women but is also an activity that is a responsibility for men,” she said. Later in the interview, she added, “If I’m reading a book and the protagonist is a male, I just change the he to a she.” She said it normalizes women being the star of a story and that “women matter and women are interesting.”
Her comments were quick to draw criticism from the Right.
Conservative commentator Allie Beth Stuckey said, &#8220;Being a boy isn&#8217;t a disease that needs to be cured. Masculinity is a strength that needs to be fostered and encouraged.&#8221;
Fox New&#8217;s Tomi Lahren added, &#8220;I told yall the other night on Watters PrimeTime as bad as Gavin is, the wife will be the woke weight on his ankles.&#8221;
Popular commentator Link Lauren said, &#8220;I&#8217;e sounded the alarm for years. Jennifer is on eof the most radical women in public life. Imagine how she is behind closed doors if this is what she says publicly.&#8221;
The Daily Wire obtained the interview in its entirety and found that in addition to her parental advice, Siebel Newsom said conservative politics conflict with viewing women as equal.
“I grew up revering Ronald Reagan … my father did, so therefore we did,” she said. “My dad has always been the biggest champion of women, especially marginalized and vulnerable women, but unfortunately his politics led him in a direction that is sort of in conflict with seeing women as equal.”
She also <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7_5zEr_OuM">blames</a> California’s K-shaped economy on the “devaluation of all that we’ve feminized.”
“Everything that we’ve feminized in American culture — whether entire industries like education, health care, etc., or just attributes like empathy, care, and collaboration — because of the devaluation of all that we’ve feminized, we actually have this incredible inequitable system whereby socioeconomic mobility has never been as poor.” She added that “with California, for example, being the richest and poorest state in our country, we know that we have a lot of work to do to ensure that every California resident achieves not just the American dream, but the California dream.”
Siebel Newsom concluded, saying this is a policy she’ll champion as &#8220;first partner&#8221; of California, a title she created, explaining that she sees it as a more inclusive alternative to the traditional title of “first lady.”
It’s not the first time critics have questioned the first partner’s beliefs and word choices. Siebel Newsom even mentioned her husband has at times been a critic. “Every once in a while, he’ll [Governor Gavin Newsom] say, ‘That’s not really helpful that you said that,’ and I’m like, ‘I know, I’m sorry,’ but it’s the truth and I’m always going to speak the truth, and I’m always a mama and I always care about not just my children, but California’s children, and I’m always going to advocate for women.”
CNN’s Scott Jennings has <a href="https://www.instagram.com/reel/DWjVVMgAtfI/">argued</a> Siebel Newsom will be a problem for the governor of California if he chooses to run for president in 2028. Jennings made his remarks after Siebel Newsom discussed traveling to red states to learn about racism and misogyny.

The First Lady is meant to embody unity, home, and family. She is the right hand of the president and, in her own way, a mother to the nation. Melania Trump has taken that charge seriously — focusing her platform on children’s well-being, online safety, and opioid abuse prevention, placing service above self and motherhood above politics.
So as 2028 rumors gather and the question of our next president looms, it’s worth considering who would stand beside him and what she would do with the platform.
If California Governor Gavin Newsom becomes our next president, ask yourself how detrimental it would be for our nation if his First “Partner,” Jennifer Siebel Newsom, assumes greater power. Not First Lady — First Partner. The title she bestows on herself tells you everything you need to know, and the damage would follow accordingly.
Siebel Newsom wouldn’t be the mother of our nation. She’d be the caregiver, the parent, whatever gender-neutral term doesn’t upset the acolytes of the far Left who propelled the couple to power.  She wouldn’t reserve that terminology for herself alone; she would conscript the rest of us into it as well.
We need not wonder how she would parent the country. She’s already told us by how she parents her kids.
I recently wrote about how she’s taken her children on what amounts to a Racism Safari through Red State America — hunting for “misogyny, racism, and bullying, oh my!” But a newly resurfaced video reveals the indoctrination began far earlier.
Siebel Newsom told an interviewer that she gives her boys dolls &#8220;to learn that caregiving is not just an activity reserved for women.&#8221; She added that when reading a book with a male protagonist, she simply &#8220;changes the he to a she&#8221; so her sons can see that &#8220;women can be at the center of a story. That women matter. That women are interesting.&#8221; You have to rewrite literature to teach your children that women are interesting? Isn’t this something they should be able to observe at home, or is that a problem in the Newsom household?
Then she went further. We are all, she said, &#8220;recognizing what it is to ultimately deconstruct all of these gender roles and ultimately be human.&#8221; She will &#8220;continue to do her work to try and deconstruct these limiting narratives about what it means to be human.&#8221;
Read that again. In order for the Newsom family to be fully human, they must first dismantle what it means to be a man or woman. I can’t imagine what their dinnertime conversations sound like, but it seems as if the Newsoms are engaging in a war against the imago Dei — the truth that every person is made in God’s image, with an unchangeable, sexed soul.
When elites like Newsom use their platform to rewrite children’s books, hand boys dolls as ideological instruments, and treat biology as a social construct to be dismantled, they don’t make us more human. They make us less. They tell boys that the natural drive to protect and provide is toxic. They tell girls that the capacity to nurture is something to be questioned.
The result? Confused children, skyrocketing rates of anxiety, depression, and identity disorders, and a culture that treats objective reality as bigotry.
The leftist upper echelon calls this harmless. It isn&#8217;t. It is state-adjacent indoctrination with a smile and a reading circle.
True humanity is not found in endless deconstruction. It is found in accepting the Creator’s blueprint, in living out complementarity, and in rejecting the nihilism that insists man can redefine what God has made.
If the Newsoms become our nation’s next parents, we can be sure that their form of “progress” will aggressively erode that very humanity they openly vow to deconstruct — in the form of gender clinics in schools, pronouns in kindergarten, and a generation that no longer knows what a mother is.
