Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA) claimed that the Department of Justice under former President Joe Biden could not possibly have been “weaponized” because Biden’s Attorney General, Merrick Garland, was not a particularly partisan actor.
Schiff spoke on Saturday at the Texas Tribune Festival, and he mocked his Republican colleagues in Congress — some of whom were actively targeted by Biden’s DOJ — saying that it was “absurd” to believe that Garland would oversee a Justice Department driven by politics.

“I listened in the Judiciary Committee to a lot of my colleagues across the aisle rail with just the most righteous indignation about the horrible weaponization of the Justice Department under that well-known partisan Merrick Garland,” Schiff began, his tone already mocking, prompting laughter around the room.
“And it was so fanciful as to be absurd, but they speak it with what appears to be total conviction,” he claimed, shifting his tone to convey shock. “And I don’t know, maybe they&#8217;re better actors than they used to be, or maybe they&#8217;ve so internalized the talking points that they&#8217;ve persuaded themselves …”
Schiff also raised eyebrows with other comments he made at the Texas Tribune Festival, particularly when he argued that lawmakers should not destroy presidents or make them “<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/adam-schiff-claims-lawmakers-shouldnt-use-politics-to-destroy-presidents">unsuccessful</a>” simply because it was “good politics.”
“That attitude that you can make a president or a party unsuccessful, no matter what damage it might do to the country, because it’s good politics — we have to get past that ruinous idea,” the California senator said. “We have to figure out a way to stop viewing each other as our enemy.”
Critics, of course, quickly pointed out the fact that Schiff had spent a fair amount of his time and energy devoted to doing just that to President Donald Trump.
Schiff spent most of Trump’s first term telling any media personality who would listen that he had proof of Trump’s “collusion” with Russia — proof that he never delivered. He then served as one of the House Managers during President Trump’s first impeachment in 2019, presenting a case that was so one-sided that it provoked an angry response from George Washington University law professor <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/impeachment-witness-professor-jonathan-turley-congress-committing-high-crime-and-misdemeanor-in-impeachment-without-going-to-courts">Jonathan Turley</a>.

President Donald Trump on Sunday night called for House Republicans to back a vote compelling the Justice Department to release all files connected to convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Trump’s call comes just days after he directed the Justice Department to investigate Epstein’s connections to powerful Democrats like former President Bill Clinton. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) expects a vote this week on a bill that, if approved, would release the Epstein files. If passed in the House, the proposal would need 60 votes in the Senate to advance to Trump&#8217;s desk. 
“As I said on Friday night aboard Air Force One to the Fake News Media, House Republicans should vote to release the Epstein files, because we have nothing to hide, and it’s time to move on from this Democrat Hoax perpetrated by Radical Left Lunatics in order to deflect from the Great Success of the Republican Party, including our recent Victory on the Democrat ‘Shutdown,’” Trump <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/115562626931599548">wrote</a> on Truth Social. 
Trump said that the Justice Department had already turned over tens of pages of documents related to Epstein to the public and said that the House Oversight Committee could have access to whatever documents it was legally entitled to. 
“Nobody cared about Jeffrey Epstein when he was alive and, if the Democrats had anything, they would have released it before our Landslide Election Victory,” Trump added. “Some ‘members’ of the Republican Party are being &#8216;used,&#8217; and we can’t let that happen. Let’s start talking about the Republican Party’s Record Setting Achievements, and not fall into the Epstein ‘TRAP,’ which is actually a curse on the Democrats, not us.”
In the same post, the president referenced his <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-unleashes-doj-to-investigate-epsteins-democrat-friends?author=Zach+Jewell&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=3&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=Trump+Unleashes+DOJ+To+Investigate+Epstein’s+Democrat+Friends">directive</a> to the Justice Department last week, saying that it was “looking at various Democrat operatives (Bill Clinton, Reid Hoffman, Larry Summers, etc.) and their relationship to Epstein.” In a later post, Trump <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/115563298458806964">said</a> that Democrats who had &#8220;sleazy relationships&#8221; with Epstein should be prosecuted. 
Rather than dwelling on Epstein, Trump said Republicans should focus on the economy, tax cuts, the trillions in pledged investment, and his efforts to crack down on illegal immigration. In recent months, Trump has <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-rips-epstein-hoax-as-victims-rally-to-demand-transparency">expressed frustration</a> with questions about Epstein. 
Last week, Democrats <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/dems-drop-new-epstein-emails-in-which-he-claims-trump-knew-about-the-girls">released</a> multiple Epstein emails, including correspondence in which the pedophile claimed that Trump “knew about the girls” and “spent hours” at Epstein’s home with one of the sexual abuser’s victims. The House GOP Oversight Committee released an additional 20,000 pages of documents on Wednesday, and the White House <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-responds-to-epstein-emails-dropped-by-dems-says-its-an-attempt-to-deflect-from-shutdown">said</a> that the contents confirmed that Trump did not take part in Epstein’s sex crimes.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt noted that the unnamed victim in the emails was the late Virginia Giuffre, who never accused Trump of any wrongdoing.

California Democratic Congressman Eric Swalwell faces a potential federal investigation after President Donald Trump&#8217;s top housing official referred him to the Department of Justice over alleged mortgage and tax fraud on Thursday.
Swalwell is accused of making false statements on loan documents related to a house in Washington, D.C., according to a letter Director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency Bill Pulte sent to Attorney General Pam Bondi, NBC News <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/trump-administration/trump-administration-eric-swalwell-federal-criminal-probe-mortgage-rcna243518">reported</a>. The allegations stem from Swalwell&#8217;s purchase of a $1.2 million home in the nation&#8217;s capital that he reportedly claimed as his primary residence.
By claiming the D.C. home as his primary residence, Swalwell qualified for millions of dollars&#8217; worth of loans and refinancing, the New York Post <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/11/13/us-news/eric-swalwells-1-2-million-dc-home-target-of-doj-mortgage-fraud-criminal-referral/">reported</a>. His campaign has also faced scrutiny over payments made to a Haitian American staffer that totaled over $360,000 and for expenditures on luxury hotels and car services, according to <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/trump-doj-opens-mortgage-fraud-probe-eric-swalwell-congressman-vows-keep-fighting-back">Fox News</a>.
Swalwell becomes the fourth Democrat in recent months to face mortgage fraud allegations after Pulte also sent the DOJ criminal referrals for Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA), New York Attorney General Letitia James, and Biden-appointed Federal Reserve Board Governor Lisa Cook. Swalwell told NBC News that the criminal referral didn’t surprise him, arguing that it is politically motivated.
&#8220;As the most vocal critic of Donald Trump over the last decade and as the only person who still has a surviving lawsuit against him, the only thing I am surprised about is that it took him this long to come after me,&#8221; Swalwell said.
Other Democratic lawmakers argued that the Trump administration is targeting one of the president&#8217;s most vocal critics.

For years after being elected to Congress, Swalwell struggled with finances. According to a Washington Free Beacon <a href="https://freebeacon.com/politics/eric-swalwell-is-a-financial-mess/">report</a> from 2019, he had still failed to pay off his student loans after graduating in 2006 and had accumulated credit card debt.
Swalwell, who has been in Congress since 2013, gained notoriety for his role in pushing the Trump-Russia collusion hoax during Trump&#8217;s first term. The Democratic congressman has also been criticized over his relationship with a suspected Chinese spy, a relationship he had while he sat on the House Intelligence Committee.

The former chief of staff to California Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom was charged Wednesday in connection with a complicated scheme to steal funds from a campaign account previously belonging to former Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra.
The Justice Department unveiled a 23-count <a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-edca/media/1417121/dl?inline">indictment</a> against 53-year-old Democrat consultant Dana Williamson, charging her with bank fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy to defraud the United States and obstruct justice, subscribing to false tax returns, and making false statements. Williamson, who worked for Newsom between 2022 and 2024, is accused of participating in a scheme to divert $225,000 from Becerra’s dormant campaign account.
“This is a crucial step in an ongoing political corruption investigation that began more than three years ago,” said U.S. Attorney Eric Grant. “As it always has, the U.S. Attorney’s Office will continue to work tirelessly with our law enforcement partners to protect the people of California from political corruption.”
The indictment alleges that Williamson worked with lobbyist Greg Campbell and former Becerra chief of staff Sean McCluskie to funnel funds from the dormant campaign account. Prosecutors say the scheme operated between February 2022 and September 2024.

Both McCluskie and Campbell accepted plea deals last month related to the scheme. 
“Mr. Campbell takes full accountability for his actions and is cooperating fully with the legal process,” Todd Pickles, a lawyer for Campbell, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/11/12/us/newsom-aide-corruption-charges.html">said</a> in a statement. He added that Campbell is “an honorable former public servant and a positive and respected member of the community who has conducted himself with integrity through this deeply challenging process.”
The indictment also alleged that Williamson claimed more than $1 million in fraudulent tax deductions. This includes claiming deductions for items like a $15,353 Chanel handbag and ring, a $5,818 Fendi handbag and wallet, a $19,498 heating and cooling system at her home, a $9,859 watch, a $6,324 couch for her home, a $21,175 private jet charter, a $15,662 luxury hotel stay on her birthday, and $156,302 for a luxury vacation in Mexico, according to the indictment. 
Williamson pleaded not guilty to the charges during an appearance in federal court on Wednesday. Footage shared online by California political reporter Ashley Zavala showed her exiting the courthouse without responding to questions from reporters.

McGregor Scott, Williamson’s lawyer, accused the Trump administration of showboating in its handling of the case. 
“They chose the grandstanding route,” he told the New York Times. “The only conclusion I can draw is this is the latest misstep taken down the wrong road by the Trump Justice Department.”
If convicted, Williamson could face decades in prison and penalties totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Becerra, who is running for governor of California, said he was cooperating with federal authorities. 
&#8220;The news today of formal accusations of impropriety by a long-serving trusted advisor are a gut punch,” he said. “As California’s former Attorney General, I fully comprehend the importance of allowing this investigation and legal process to run its course through our justice system.”

Topline: The government shutdown finally came to a close on Wednesday, with President Donald Trump signing legislation to reopen the government.
The House voted on legislation to fund the government through the end of January. The vote came after eight Senate Democrats sided with Republicans earlier this week to break the filibuster and push through a continuing resolution to fund the federal government.
After more than 40 days, the shutdown’s impacts hit all across the country. From air travel to food stamps, Americans felt it.
What comes next:  The debate will quickly shift to healthcare and Obamacare subsidies, which the Democrats used as a rhetorical tool to prevent funding the government for the past 40 days. When they voted to reopen the government over the weekend, part of the deal was to bring that debate back to the Senate in December.
On the House side, Democrats such as Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries have proposed extending those subsidies for three years. But with Republicans in the majority, the calculus is different, and there is a lot unknown about the continuation of those subsidies.
The argument from many Republicans and opponents of the renewed subsidies for the Affordable Care Act is that the program was never sustainable to begin with.
Shutdown drama continued:  Republicans are very pleased with the outcome, but many Democrats, aside from those few who voted to reopen the government, are not.

Topline: The DOJ is investigating a protest outside of a Turning Point USA event at UC Berkeley this week.
TPUSA has gotten more attention than ever over the last two months since Charlie Kirk, the group’s founder, was assassinated. In the wake of that tragedy, rather than pull back, the conservative activist group has gone all in.
While a number of its events have faced significant protest, thanks to increased security, most have been peaceful. But during the final stop of the Turning Point tour this week at Cal Berkeley, a protest turned violent. In the hours leading up to the event, hundreds of black-clad protesters <a href="https://x.com/MrAndyNgo/status/1988056273716474048?s=20">descended</a> on the venue, hurling insults and threats at conservative students attending the event, and mocking Kirk’s murder.
Other chants included, “When fascists come and cause a wreck, they get a bullet in the neck.” At one point, a group of protesters attempted to rob a man of his necklace and proceeded to beat him when he attempted to stop them. As the victim, who was briefly detained by police himself, stands up, dripping blood from his face, some in the crowd begin to taunt him, <a href="https://x.com/FrontlinesTPUSA/status/1988051012050186316?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noopener">saying,</a> “white boy, you’re bleeding.”
Turning Point staffers say rioters set off smoke bombs and tear gas outside the venue, and hurled fireworks and glass bottles at those trying to get in, including parents carrying small children. And then, as the event ended, large groups of rioters blocked exits and hurled threats at those leaving. 
DOJ steps in: Attorney General Pam Bondi said Tuesday that the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force will &#8220;spare no expense unmasking all who commit and orchestrate acts of political violence” and seeking out the identities of specific agitators. Bondi <a href="https://x.com/AGPamBondi/status/1988339354754769099">added</a>, &#8220;Antifa is an existential threat to our nation.&#8221; The Justice Department also sent a letter to the University of California Board of Regents, notifying them that an investigation had been opened into their handling of the riot, ordering them to preserve all internal records regarding security preparations. 
“ There was a sold out crowd of over 2,000 tickets for this event with Rob Schneider, the comedian, and in fact, only a thousand people were allowed to enter,&#8221; <a href="https://x.com/AAGDhillon/status/1988582068776026127?s=20">said</a> the Justice Department’s assistant attorney general for civil rights, Harmeet Dhillon. &#8220;There were shenanigans with the ticketing, but a lot of people didn&#8217;t come because of what we call the ‘heckler&#8217;s veto,’ the violent mob allowed to fester outside.”

Topline: Venezuela says it’s launched a “massive mobilization” of its armed forces – as the United States’ largest aircraft carrier arrives in the region.
Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro’s defense minister, Vladimir Padrino López, on Tuesday <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/maduro-orders-massive-military-mobilization-as-u-s-carrier-group-nears-venezuela">announced</a> a military buildup to counter what he called the “imperialist threat” from the United States. That buildup included military exercises on Wednesday that reportedly <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/venezuela-military-mobilization-us-navy-flotilla-nears-caribbean-uss-ford/">involved</a> around 200,000 troops. Reports say that the military has prepped anti-aircraft systems across Venezuela in case Trump decides to order land strikes, as he has hinted at a few times.
State of play: The United States’ largest and most advanced warship, the USS Gerald R. Ford, has finally arrived in the region, military officials said on Tuesday.
But diplomatic relations between Caracas and Washington have broken down, and it is unclear whether they have since rebounded.
The New York Times <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/10/10/world/americas/maduro-venezuela-us-oil.html">reported</a> last month that diplomacy between the two sides is basically broken. It broke over Maduro’s refusal to vacate leadership.
Caracas had offered the United States a majority stake in its oil and other mineral wealth. Part of the agreement would have been that Caracas would distance itself from powers hostile to the United States – namely, China, Iran, and Russia. But the United States walked away.
Invasion?: Many have made comparisons between the military buildup in the Caribbean Sea and the lead-up to the U.S. invasion of Panama in 1989. There remain some stark differences, however. Venezuela is much larger than Panama, has a larger military, and Maduro is protected by special forces from Cuba, and Moscow has promised to help Venezuela in the event of an invasion.
Also, in 1989, the United States went into Panama to oust dictator Gen. Manuel Noriega with <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/11/11/us/politics/panama-noriega-maduro.html">roughly</a> 27,000 troops. With the addition of the USS Gerald R. Ford, the United States still has only <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2025/11/11/americas/venezuela-military-mobilization-us-buildup-intl-latam#:~:text=Maduro%20has%20also%20claimed%20that,CNN's%20Haley%20Britzky%20contributed.">around</a> 15,000 troops in the Caribbean Sea.

The man who owned the Metro card that law enforcement believed was linked to a person of interest in the January 6 pipe bomb case spoke with The Daily Wire on Tuesday, saying it was not his neighbor who used the transit card but in fact a friend of his.
The man, an Air Force veteran who requested anonymity to avoid his name being linked to a serious crime, lived next door to a Capitol Police officer named in a story by The Blaze on Saturday. <a href="https://www.theblaze.com/news/former-capitol-police-officer-a-forensic-match-for-jan-6-pipe-bomber-sources-say" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The report</a> said computerized &#8220;gait analysis&#8221; suggested that the person who planted pipe bombs at the Democratic and Republican National Committees on January 5 moved with the same mannerisms as a particular female Capitol Police officer who later shot nonlethal rounds at protesters.
The theory gained secondary support from the fact that she lived next to someone who had already separately landed on law enforcement’s radar in the case – something that seemed like a mathematically improbable coincidence.
The Daily Wire confirmed that law enforcement suspected a particular Falls Church, Virginia man&#8217;s Metro card of being linked to the case, and also that the Capitol Police officer was in fact his neighbor, literally sharing a wall with him.
We went to the address and interviewed the man, who said it was his understanding that the neighboring unit was in fact occupied by two Capitol Police officers — the female officer told him her romantic partner was on the force, too.
But he does not believe his Metro card was used by the police officer on January 5: He told The Daily Wire it was used by a childhood friend who traveled from the south to attend Trump&#8217;s rally, and stayed with him to save money. The Air Force vet let him borrow his card and picked him up from the Metro station in Virginia after the rally, he said. Both men are Trump supporters, he said.
About a week later in 2021, he got a call from law enforcement — he believes it was Metro transit police – asking who used the card. Former FBI employee Kyle Seraphin told The Daily Wire two years ago that he was assigned to<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/fbi-tied-january-6-pipe-bomber-to-metro-card-of-ex-gov-official-but-blocked-interview-of-him-former-agent-says" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> stake out</a> the address because the FBI believed a person of interest in the bomb case swiped through the subway gates using a card owned by the man.
The Air Force veteran, a tall black man, immediately gave the police the name of his friend, who is a white man about 5 foot 10 or 5 foot 11, he told The Daily Wire.
&#8220;Other than that call from the Transit Police, that&#8217;s all I ever heard about it,&#8221; he said.
The Air Force vet said he went to school with the man decades ago but had not remained in touch until reconnecting over social media. The vet is 66 years old, making the friend about the same age. He said the friend spent large portions of each year in foreign countries spreading Christianity. He would &#8220;probably be the last person on God&#8217;s green earth that would be involved in doing anything like that,&#8221; the vet said.
After receiving the call from the police, the flummoxed vet called his friend to tell him what had happened. &#8220;I said, &#8216;Do you have a secret life that I don&#8217;t know about?&#8217; and he said no,&#8221; he said.
By that time, law enforcement had already made contact with his friend as well. &#8220;When I told him about it, he told me he did have a conversation with those folks,&#8221; he said. The police seemingly ruled him out as a suspect.
The Air Force vet declined to name the southern evangelical to The Daily Wire, but said he had provided the name to police, and would fully cooperate with any law enforcement or court inquiry.
He said the friend came back to town for Donald Trump&#8217;s second inauguration, where he annoyed the vet by insisting on wearing a Trump hat in deep-blue areas, causing drama. &#8220;I felt like, oh my God. How did I get myself involved in this?&#8221; he said.
After that, the veteran blocked his old friend on his phone, he said.
The development does not rule out that the police officer identified by The Blaze could be the pipe bomber; however, the theory would now rest solely on the &#8220;gait analysis,&#8221; or that some other factor is at play.
The female police officer has since moved, and no one answered the door at her new house when The Daily Wire knocked on it Tuesday. The Air Force veteran said a Blaze reporter had come to his door a few days ago, but he had declined to speak with him because he was caught off guard by the unexpected visitor.
A January 2025 congressional report on the January 6 pipe bomb investigation, compiled by staff for Reps. Barry Loudermilk (R-GA) and Thomas Massie (R-KY), describe a lead on someone who seemed to be photographing locations where bombs were later placed:
<blockquote>According to the FBI, after taking pictures of the dumpster, [Person of Interest 2] walked around the Capitol Complex, met with two [unidentified subjects], returned to the same alleyway behind the RNC, then entered the Capitol South Metro Station, and rode the metro to Falls Church, Virginia. Notably, agents assigned to the case team determined that POI2 used an Uber account and Metro SmartTrip card registered to a separate individual (‘POI3’) who lived in Falls Church, Virginia. According to internal emails obtained by the Subcommittee, the FBI’s case team considered POI2’s movements to be ‘highly suspicious’ and considered POI2 as a “possible accomplice” to the pipe bomber.
In the weeks following January 6, the FBI directed significant resources towards investigating POI2 and POI3. For example, the FBI placed both POI2 and POI3 under “FISUR” or “physical surveillance” by the FBI’s Washington Field Office’s (“WFO”) Special Operations Group (“SOG”). The FBI also obtained grand jury subpoenas for the cell phone data associated with POI2’s and POI3’s phone numbers and issued preservation requests for their [redacted] and accounts. With help from US [Capitol Police], the FBI also tracked the movements of the two “[unidentified subjects]” POI2 met while walking around the Capitol Complex on January 5. On January 19, 2021, FBI agents interviewed POI2 and ultimately eliminated that individual as a person of interest. According to a summary of the interview obtained by the Subcommittee, the FBI learned that POI2 traveled to Washington, D.C. to attend First Amendment activities on Capitol Hill on January 5 and that throughout the day, POI2 photographed “objects bearing numerals” including doors, dumpsters, and other objects and intended to use these photographs in a book he was writing. The FBI’s review of POI2’s cell phone and photographs appear to corroborate his story; however, the interview summary does not elaborate further on how the case team verified POI2’s story. Following the interview with POI2, the FBI ruled out both POI2 and POI3 as possible persons of interest.”</blockquote>
The FBI claims it has been unable to identify who set pipe bombs at party headquarters, despite using elaborate and high-tech measures to identify hundreds of January 6 protesters for minor crimes like trespassing. There are significant questions about those bombs and the reaction to them, including by police and Kamala Harris, who was at the DNC while the pipe bomb was there, but never mentioned that fact.

The U.S. is investigating meatpacking companies, the attorney general said on Friday, after President Donald Trump accused the companies of using price manipulation and collusion to drive up beef prices.
The probe shows the Trump administration is seeking to tackle high food prices that have outpaced inflation. The Department of Justice is already probing whether egg producers conspired to inflate the price of eggs.
Beef prices set records in 2025 after a years-long drought burned up pasture lands and hiked feeding costs for cattle, forcing ranchers to slash the nation&#8217;s herd to the smallest level in nearly 75 years. Consumer demand has remained generally strong despite high prices.
&#8220;I have asked the DOJ to immediately begin an investigation into the Meat Packing Companies who are driving up the price of Beef through Illicit Collusion, Price Fixing, and Price Manipulation,&#8221; Trump said in a post on Truth Social, without naming companies.
Ranchers have long complained about consolidation in the packing industry, where Tyson Foods, Cargill, JBS USA and National Beef Packing Company slaughter about 80% of U.S. grain-fattened cattle that are made into steaks, beef roasts and other cuts of meat.
Cargill declined to comment. Spokespeople for the other companies did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
&#8220;This entire industry is highly concentrated and well beyond the level that&#8217;s normally considered a harm to the economy,&#8221; said Bill Bullard, CEO of cattle producers&#8217; group R-CALF USA.
JBS USA is owned by Brazilian meatpacker JBS, while Brazil&#8217;s Marfrig Global Foods SA holds a controlling stake in National Beef Packing Company.
The administration of former President Joe Biden also blamed meatpacking companies for rising food prices.
Tyson, Cargill and JBS have paid tens of millions of dollars to settle lawsuits accusing the companies of conspiring to inflate U.S. beef prices by restricting supply. They have denied wrongdoing.
The DOJ has already begun an investigation, Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a post on X. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins and Assistant Attorney General Gail Slater, who leads the DOJ&#8217;s antitrust division, are working together on the probe, Bondi said.
The antitrust division has both civil and criminal investigative authority, and can issue subpoenas for documents and witness testimony in its investigations into suspected anticompetitive conduct.
Slater, a former economic adviser to Vice President JD Vance, has said the DOJ&#8217;s antitrust division will focus on &#8220;pocketbook issues&#8221; facing consumers, such as food, housing and transportation.
Bipartisan calls for antitrust enforcement in the packing industry have mounted in recent years.
At a hearing in June, Senator Josh Hawley, a Republican from Missouri, and Cory Booker, a Democratic senator from New Jersey, called for antitrust enforcement in the sector.
&#8220;We need transparency, accountability, and a fair market that rewards those who actually raise and produce our beef — not the corporate middlemen gaming the system,&#8221; Rollins said in a post on X.
Trump recently angered ranchers by urging them to lower cattle prices and suggesting the country could increase low-tariff imports of Argentine beef to lower U.S. beef prices. Economists said increased imports from Argentina would not meaningfully reduce grocery store prices for U.S. consumers.
In August, Trump implemented a 50% tariff on Brazilian goods that has slowed imports of a major source of beef that was mixed with U.S. hamburger meat, further tightening supplies.

Justice Dept Probes Meatpackers Over ‘Illicit Collusion, Price Fixing’ Driving Up Prices

The Department of Justice has reportedly opened a corruption probe into Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser over a Qatar-funded flight.
The mayor’s office said that it had not been notified of any investigation into the mayor’s travel. It confirmed the flight at the center of the reported probe, but said that all “proper paperwork for this standard donation is on file,” according to <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/11/06/us/politics/trump-muriel-bowser-qatar-investigation.html">The New York Times</a>.
“We have checked with our lawyers, and the District has not been notified of any investigation. This was a business trip; DC representatives regularly travel to promote Washington as a destination for investment and growth. This regular work has helped bring investment, infrastructure, new business, new grocery stores, growth, and jobs to the District,” Bowser’s office told <a href="https://www.newsweek.com/trump-doj-investigation-muriel-bowser-dc-qatar-11007381">Newsweek</a> in a statement.
&#8220;In some cases, economic development funds are used for the business travel; in other cases, the host or organizer cover the expenses,” the statement continued.
The Justice Department reportedly began to scrutinize the mayor’s overseas travels after a local D.C. outlet, <a href="https://wjla.com/features/i-team/washington-dc-code-mayor-spending-travel-expenses-report-dubai-qatar-donation-agreement-luxury-vacation-climate-change-convention-taxpayer-dollars-chamber-of-commerce-middle-east-investigation">WJLA</a>, reported that Qatar paid $61,930 for flights to Doha for the mayor and four of her staff in 2023. Afterward, the mayor and her entourage jetted over to Dubai for a climate change conference.
Bowser kept poor records of her trip to Qatar and other jaunts in the United States and to other foreign countries, according to WJLA. At the time of the report, WJLA found no record of a donation agreement between the mayor’s office and Qatar, which is required by D.C. law.
When first questioned about the trip, Bowser’s office initially claimed that it has been covered by the D.C. Chamber of Commerce before telling reporters that the cost was actually borne by the U.S. Conference of Mayors. WJLA later discovered that the trip was in part funded by the Qatari government after obtaining documents through an open records request.

Three Chinese researchers at the University of Michigan were charged Wednesday in connection with a conspiracy to smuggle biological materials into the United States, the Justice Department announced.
Those charged <a href="https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/three-chinese-national-scholars-university-michigan-laboratory-charged-conspiring-smuggle">include</a> 28-year-old Xu Bai, 27-year-old Fengfan Zhang, and 30-year-old Zhiyong Zhang. The arrests are the latest in a “long <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/alarming-pattern-another-chinese-national-arrested-for-smuggling-biological-materials-into-u-s">string of cases</a>” involving Chinese nationals and the University of Michigan, the Justice Department said.
“Allegedly attempting to smuggle biological materials under the guise of ‘research’ is a serious crime that threatens America’s national and agricultural security,” said Attorney General Pam Bondi. “We will remain vigilant to threats like these from foreign nationals who would take advantage of America’s generosity to advance a malicious agenda.”
Each of the suspects held a J-1 visa and was conducting research at the University of Michigan’s Xianzhong Xu laboratory, also known as the Shawn Xu laboratory. The <a href="https://www.lsi.umich.edu/science/our-labs/s-xu-lab/research">lab</a> is a “sensory biology” research center that focuses on how animals experience their internal and external world through their senses.
In 2024 and 2025, Bai and F. Zhang allegedly received shipments of concealed biological materials related to roundworms sent from a Chinese national, the DOJ said. The Chinese national who sent them the worms was Chengxuan Han, who was recently deported from the United States after pleading no contest to three counts of smuggling and one count of making false statements.
The defendants were fired from their positions at the university after refusing to attend a mandatory meeting to discuss the investigation into their practices, the DOJ said. They later tried to fly out of the country from Detroit and then New York City before they were apprehended by federal law enforcement.
“At some point, pattern becomes practice. And, apparently, these three men are part of a long and alarming pattern of criminal activities committed by Chinese Nationals under the cover of the University of Michigan,” said United States Attorney Jerome Gorgon, Jr.
Agencies involved in the investigation included Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the FBI, and Customs and Border Protection.
“This case underscores the vital importance of safeguarding the American people and addressing vulnerabilities within foreign student and exchange visitor programs,” said acting ICE Director Todd M. Lyons. “Educational institutions must enhance their admissions procedures to prevent exploitation, which can pose risks to national security, as demonstrated in this instance. I commend the ICE HSI agents and officers who work tirelessly to protect our nation and uphold the rule of law every day.”

Attorney General Pam Bondi said Tuesday that the Biden administration turned over President Donald Trump’s government phone to Jack Smith as he snooped through the president’s phone records as part of his wide-reaching investigation into the 2020 presidential election.
Bondi made the announcement on X, confirming previous revelations from Senate Republicans that the FBI seized Trump&#8217;s government-issued phone as part of Smith’s Arctic Frost investigation. That investigation, supposedly into Trump’s alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election, targeted hundreds of Republicans in Congress and Trump allies outside of Capitol Hill.
“During the Arctic Frost Investigation, we found that Special Counsel seized President Trump’s government-issued phone. This means the Biden Administration turned over President Trump’s phone to Special Counsel—an UNPRECEDENTED action,” Bondi <a href="https://x.com/AGPamBondi/status/1985754381216624949">said</a>. “In addition, Special Counsel subpoenaed all of President Trump’s PERSONAL phone records.”
“We can never again allow this kind of government weaponization in America,” Bondi added. “I submitted these new documents to our partners on Capitol Hill. I commend our team at the FBI for working diligently to expose this.”
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt commented more on the revelation during Tuesday’s press briefing.

According to a March 2025 <a href="https://www.grassley.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/grassley_johnson_to_doj_fbi_-_arctic_frost_updates.pdf">letter</a> from Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI), the FBI first began the process of seizing Trump and former Vice President Mike Pence’s phones in April 2022 before they gained access to them and entered them as evidence in May 2022.
Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), one of the GOP senators who was targeted in the probe, said the news should enrage every American.
“This information should outrage every American,” she <a href="https://x.com/MarshaBlackburn/status/1985804405871153172">said</a>. “This is one of the worst examples of government weaponization in American history.”
Blackburn, alongside Sens. Cynthia Lummis (WY), Ron Johnson (WI), Tommy Tuberville (AL), Dan Sullivan (AK), Josh Hawley (MO), Bill Hagerty (TN), Lindsey Graham (SC), and Rep. Mike Kelly (PA), all had their phone metadata analyzed by the FBI as part of Arctic Frost.

The Department of Justice is reportedly investigating the national Black Lives Matter organization over allegations that the group’s leadership defrauded donors.
Federal agents are probing the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation after years of financial scandals and infighting at the group. Officials have issued multiple subpoenas and carried out at least one search warrant against the foundation and other leftist groups in recent weeks, according to the <a href="https://apnews.com/article/black-lives-matter-fraud-doj-investigation-trump-371e3277ff3b78bc73d3467c4692c66c">Associated Press</a>.
The investigation began under former President Joe Biden, according to the AP.
In a statement, the foundation denied that it is the subject of a “federal criminal investigation.”
“We remain committed to full transparency, accountability, and the responsible stewardship of resources dedicated to building a better future for Black communities,” the foundation told the AP.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California in Los Angeles is leading the investigation into the foundation, according to <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/federal-prosecutors-investigate-blm-leaders-over-alleged-misuse-90m-donations">Fox News</a>.

The Black Lives Matter foundation received a cascade of donations following the death of George Floyd, a chronic drug abuser and repeat criminal, during his arrest in Minneapolis in 2020. The foundation received an estimated $90 million in contributions following Floyd’s death, which kicked off nationwide protests and riots over alleged systemic racism within law enforcement that resulted in over <a href="https://www.axios.com/2020/09/16/riots-cost-property-damage">$1 billion</a> in damages.
No criminal charges have been filed in the investigation into the foundation or related groups. The investigation itself is part of the Trump administration’s effort to probe potential illegal activity within leftist organizations and identify the financial interests behind violent riots spurred by political agendas, according to <a href="https://www.nationalreview.com/news/justice-department-investigates-black-lives-matter-leaders-for-potential-fraud/">National Review</a>.
The Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation has been rocked by allegations of scandal and the abuse of donor funds in recent years.
In 2022, the national foundation <a href="https://freebeacon.com/democrats/black-lives-matter-hemorrhaged-cash-in-2022-tax-documents-show/">hemorrhaged</a> funds while paying out substantial paychecks to its former executive director Patrisse Cullors and a number of her family members and friends. Part of the $90 million trove the national foundation raised in the immediate aftermath of Floyd’s death went toward luxury homes in Los Angeles and Toronto together worth about $12 million.
Another nearly $11 million was paid out for contracts, many of which went to companies run by Cullors&#8217; family and friends. For instance, Cullors’ brother, a graffiti artist, received $1.6 million between two companies for providing &#8220;professional security services&#8221; for Black Lives Matter.
The national group and its offshoots, particularly Black Lives Matter Grassroots, have <a href="https://freebeacon.com/democrats/as-civil-war-consumes-black-lives-matter-8-7-million-goes-missing/">suffered</a> from infighting within the Black Lives Matter movement over millions of dollars-worth of donations that have seemed to go missing.

An elderly pro-life Catholic sidewalk counselor who was brutally beaten outside of a Baltimore Planned Parenthood wants the Trump administration to intervene after his attacker was given a slap on the wrist earlier this year. 
Mark Crosby, 75, sent a letter to the Justice Department on Thursday requesting that they “consider prosecution” of the 28-year-old man who <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/exclusive-full-video-shows-lead-up-to-brutal-attack-of-elderly-pro-lifers-by-man-who-dodged-prison?author=Leif+Le+Mahieu&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=undefined&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=EXCLUSIVE%3A+Full+Video+Shows+Lead-Up+To+Brutal+Attack+Of+Elderly+Pro-Lifers+By+Man+Who+Dodged+Prison">assaulted</a> him and 84-year-old Richard Schaefer outside of Planned Parenthood in downtown Baltimore on May 26, 2023. The letter, obtained by The Daily Wire, suggests that their attacker, Patrick Brice, could face federal charges for targeting them based on their religious beliefs. 
“The attack is shocking for its violence and brutality and was captured on surveillance video,” Terrell Roberts, a lawyer for Crosby, wrote to Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet Dhillon. “He was [at Planned Parenthood] with another counselor, Dick Schaefer, age 84. They hand out rosaries and religious literature to women and offer religiously based counseling with the goal of preserving the life of the unborn.&#8221;
Footage of the May 26 assault shows Brice getting into an argument with Schaefer before tackling the octogenarian into a potted plant and knocking him out. When Crosby runs up to check on Schaefer, Brice throws him to the ground before punching and kicking him in the head. 
As a result of the attack, Crosby has photophobia, which is extreme sensitivity to bright lights.

In August, Brice escaped jail time after Baltimore City Circuit Judge Yvette Bryan sentenced him to just one year of home detention and three years of probation. State prosecutors requested a total of 10 years in prison, asking that the judge send a “strong message of deterrence” against attacking people in broad daylight over their political and religious views.
Brice also dodged a more serious first-degree assault charge in both a jury trial and a bench trial. Bryan acquitted Brice of the charge because she claimed Crosby provoked him by coming to Schaefer&#8217;s aid.
&#8220;Finding Brice not guilty of a violent felony in the face of overwhelming evidence and showing extraordinary leniency by imposing a sentencing without any imprisonment in the face of the prosecution&#8217;s request for a 10-year sentence of imprisonment was a gross miscarriage of justice,&#8221; Roberts wrote.
Crosby accuses Brice of ripping off a crucifix he was wearing around his neck at the time of the attack. During sentencing, Brice disputed this and claimed that he had no animosity toward Christians.
