<h3>Bill Clinton, George Mitchell, and a Tale of Two Peace Processes</h3>
Prime Minister Netanyahu assumed office on June 18, 1996, and immediately set out to do the job the Israeli public elected him to do. When forced to choose, Rabin and Peres always made sure the cart was in front of the horse. First, one had to implement the two-state solution, and then Israel would (hopefully) get security. Under Netanyahu, the cart and the horse were put back into their rightful places. First, Israel had to get security, and then he would implement the two-state solution. In Netanyahu’s words, “One of the key goals in my first term as prime minister was to change the Palestinian perception that ‘terrorism pays’ to ‘terrorism doesn’t pay.’ I did this by insisting on security and reciprocity.”<a href="#_ftn1" name="_ftnref1">[1]</a>
He was tested almost immediately. On September 24, 1996, Netanyahu gave authorization to unseal the door to a tunnel that ran along the outer rim of Jerusalem’s Temple Mount. The door was nowhere near any mosque and opened into the Christian Quarter of the Old City. But Arafat, a human mushroom cloud, ordered his men to go on the attack using the very guns the Israelis had given them as part of the Oslo Accords, ostensibly to fight terrorism.<a href="#_ftn2" name="_ftnref2">[2]</a> By the time the mini-war ended, seventeen Israelis and about a hundred Palestinians were dead.<a href="#_ftn3" name="_ftnref3">[3]</a>
Thousands of wars have been fought since mankind became cognizant of territory and the desire to control it — none were started over a door. Admittedly, this wasn’t just any door, just as the Wailing Wall isn’t just any wall. But for its American and Israeli champions, the peace process was supposed to be the forum for settling disputes, not the battlefield.
Clinton Administration officials blamed Netanyahu.

They called for a summit where they demanded that Netanyahu make concessions. When he resisted, Clinton went into a dark rage so loud it could be heard in the next room. In the words of Dennis Ross, “Arafat now knew that Bibi was the desperate one.”<a href="#_ftn4" name="_ftnref4">[4]</a> Violence was thus not only tolerated — it was rewarded.
When a semblance of security was eventually restored, Netanyahu advanced the peace process. He agreed to not one but two interim withdrawals — the Hebron Accords and the Wye River Memorandum — but he steadfastly insisted that progress be conditioned on Arafat fighting terrorism. American officials were outraged. After Netanyahu demanded that Arafat arrest thirteen suspected terrorists, Clinton “exploded,” according to Ross, who wrote bemusedly that he was “struck by [Netanyahu’s] belief that&#8230;he was the victim of mistreatment.”<a href="#_ftn5" name="_ftnref5">[5]</a> On another occasion, Ross writes that the Clinton Administration saw Bibi’s complaints over a bombing as “an excuse to avoid negotiations” and that Bibi was “killing any prospect of peace.”<a href="#_ftn6" name="_ftnref6">[6]</a>
Meanwhile, the stubborn insistence on that which is most basic in a peace process — namely peace — paid off for ordinary Israelis. During the long, seemingly unending terror campaign that defined the Oslo Peace Process, the lowest loss of life occurred during the premiership of Netanyahu. Only one Israeli died per month on his watch. For Peres, the figures were seven and a half times worse.<a href="#_ftn7" name="_ftnref7">[7]</a>

The Wye agreement — which required a sizeable withdrawal from West Bank territory by the Israelis — proved Netanyahu’s commitment to the peace process, at least while Israeli buses and pizzerias weren’t being blown to bits. Signed on October 23, 1998, it caused his right-wing coalition partners to bring down the government and trigger early elections.<a href="#_ftn8" name="_ftnref8">[8]</a> By now, the Israeli public felt safer and, thus, more willing to take chances for peace. On May 17, 1999, Ehud Barak defeated Netanyahu in a historic landslide. At the time, it was the widest margin ever scored by an Israeli challenger over an incumbent.<a href="#_ftn9" name="_ftnref9">[9]</a>
The Israeli peace camp was jubilant. One left-wing activist said it was as if they had been freed from a foreign occupation.<a href="#_ftn10" name="_ftnref10">[10]</a> The great obstacle to peace was removed — now they could finalize a deal with the Palestinians. The cart was finally back in front of the horse.
What happened next was probably inevitable. Barak formed his pro-peace government in July; Palestinian terrorists murdered three Israelis in August.<a href="#_ftn11" name="_ftnref11">[11]</a> Through it all, Washington pressed the Israelis to continue the peace process and all the interim withdrawals that it entailed.<a href="#_ftn12" name="_ftnref12">[12]</a>
To halt the transfer of territory to the Palestinians and end the talks would “give the terrorists what they wanted.” Israel’s intelligence service issued a classified report in late 1999 predicting that Arafat would go to war because Jerusalem would be blamed for it one way or the other.<a href="#_ftn13" name="_ftnref13">[13]</a>

The Israeli Air Force coordinated with the United States to strike the Houthis in Yemen on Monday night after the terror group fired a ballistic missile at Israel’s largest airport on Sunday.
During the strike, about 20 Israeli Air Force fighter jets dropped 50 munitions on dozens of Houthi targets, according to the Israeli Defense Forces. The attack is Israel&#8217;s sixth airstrike on the Houthis since July 2024, in response to more than 400 attacks by the Iranian-backed group during the war,<a href="https://www.jpost.com/breaking-news/article-852751" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> the Jerusalem Post </a><a href="https://www.jpost.com/breaking-news/article-852751" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. It is the first Israeli strike on the Houthis since President Donald Trump took office.
The United States has been conducting <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-orders-troops-to-middle-east-to-counter-houthi-attacks" target="_blank" rel="noopener">weeks of airstrikes</a> on the Houthis in response to the group’s more than 100 attacks on international cargo ships, tankers, and naval vessels following Hamas’ October 7 assault on Israel. Since March, over 800 Houthi targets have been hit, resulting in the elimination of hundreds of fighters and leaders, and Houthi ballistic missile launches and suicide drone attacks are down 69% and 55% respectively,<a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/us-strikes-kill-hundreds-houthi-fighters-hit-over-800-red-sea-targets-central-command" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> Fox News </a><a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/us-strikes-kill-hundreds-houthi-fighters-hit-over-800-red-sea-targets-central-command" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu oversaw the strike from Israel’s Air Force command center during the attack on the Houthi terrorists on Yemen&#8217;s coastline.

The IDF said the strike was in response to repeated Houthi drone and missile attacks on Israel and its civilians. On Sunday, a Houthi missile landed near Israel’s Ben-Gurion Airport, injuring six people and halting flights. The IDF said the missile was not intercepted due to a technical malfunction, noting that their systems typically maintain a 95% success rate against missiles launched from Yemen.
Following the attack, the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-re-designates-the-houthis-as-a-terrorist-organization" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Houthis</a> pledged to “impose a comprehensive air blockade” on Israel by targeting its airports.
The counterstrike included attacks on terrorist infrastructure in the Hudaydah Port, which is used “for the transfer of Iranian weapons, military equipment, and other equipment intended for terrorist purposes,” according to the IDF.

“Over the past year and a half, the Houthi terrorist regime has been operating under Iranian direction and funding, in order to target the State of Israel and its allies, undermine regional stability, and disrupt global freedom of navigation,” the IDF said. “The IDF is determined to continue operating, at any distance, against all threats posed to the citizens of the State of Israel.”
The United States has also held Iran responsible for Houthi aggression. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/you-will-pay-the-consequence-pete-hegseth-warns-iran-over-lethal-support-to-houthis?author=Kassy+Akiva&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=0&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=%E2%80%98You+Will+Pay+The+Consequence%E2%80%99%3A+Pete+Hegseth+Warns+Iran+Over+Lethal+Support+To+Houthis" target="_blank" rel="noopener">warned</a> last week that Iran would “pay the consequence” for providing “lethal support” to the Houthis.

In March, Trump declared that “Every shot fired by the Houthis will be looked upon, from this point forward, as being a shot fired from the weapons and leadership of IRAN.” He added that Iran would be held responsible and “suffer the consequences, and those consequences will be dire.”
The IDF also struck the &#8220;Bajil&#8221; Concrete Plant, east of the city of al-Hudaydah, which it says functions as a “significant economic resource for the Houthis” and is used for the construction of “underground tunnels and terrorist infrastructure for the terrorist regime.”
The strikes were meant to harm the Houthis’ economic and military buildup capabilities, the IDF said.

Israel’s Security Cabinet on Sunday night approved a plan to invade and occupy the Gaza Strip in an expanded ground operation.
The plan, named “Operation Gideon’s Chariots,” will go into effect if Hamas fails to make an agreement with Israel by the end of President Donald Trump’s visit to the Middle East next week,<a href="https://www.jpost.com/breaking-news/article-852712" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> The Jerusalem Post </a><a href="https://www.jpost.com/breaking-news/article-852712" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a><a href="https://www.jpost.com/breaking-news/article-852712" target="_blank" rel="noopener">.</a>

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu discussed the plan during a Q&amp;A video on his X account, where he said conquered land will be retained, with reserve forces being stationed in seized areas, <a href="https://www.jns.org/gideons-chariots-idf-will-hold-gaza-says-smotrich/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jewish News Syndicate reported</a>. Since the war began, the IDF has withdrawn from territory it previously seized, including large parts of northern Gaza.

Netanyahu said military action would be intensified during the operation, and tens of thousands of IDF reservists are expected to be called up to help with the operation, according to IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir. The mobilization is reportedly one of the largest since the war began in October 2023.
“We decided on intensified action in Gaza,” Netanyahu said. “That was the IDF chief of staff’s recommendation — to move, as he said, toward the defeat of Hamas. He believes this will also help us rescue the hostages. I agree with him.”

Smotrich said Israelis should embrace the term “occupy” during this operation.

The talks follow the United States&#8217; strike on the Houthis, an Iranian proxy group in Yemen that has disrupted global trade and fired ballistic missiles at Israel.
“I think everybody agrees that doing a deal will be preferable to doing the obvious and obvious is not something I want to be involved with or frankly that Israel wants to be involved with if they can avoid it,” Trump said. “So we’re going to see if we can avoid it but it&#8217;s getting to be very dangerous territory.”
Trump announced the talks during his Oval Office meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyanu, who fiercely opposed President Barack Obama’s 2015 Iran deal. <a href="https://trumpwhitehouse.archives.gov/briefings-statements/president-donald-j-trump-ending-united-states-participation-unacceptable-iran-deal/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Trump withdrew</a> from the deal during his first term in 2018, calling it “one of the worst and most one-sided transactions the United States has ever entered into.”
Last month, during an interview with Fox News’ Maria Bartiromo, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-iran-was-told-to-accept-nuclear-deal-or-face-u-s-military" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Trump said</a> Iran can be handled militarily or through making a deal.
“I would prefer to make a deal, because I’m not looking to hurt Iran,” Trump said. “They’re great people. I know so many Iranians from this country.”
“I would rather negotiate a deal,” he added. “I’m not sure that everybody agrees with me, but we can make a deal that would be just as good as if you won militarily. But the time is happening now. The time is coming up. Something’s going to happen one way or the other.”
Trump said that he wrote the Iranian regime a letter asking to negotiate.

Israel’s Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich on Tuesday signed a directive to immediately remove all tariffs on U.S. imports. The move comes ahead of President Donald Trump’s planned announcement on implementing reciprocal tariffs.
Trump’s tariffs are set to go into place on Wednesday, April 2, which his administration is calling “Liberation Day.” Trump reporters told reporters on Sunday that the tariffs would be on “all countries,” though <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/politics-news/trump-says-planned-april-2-tariffs-will-start-countries-rcna198805" target="_blank" rel="noopener">advisors in his administration</a> said they would focus on select countries with the largest trade imbalances.
Smotrich said his goal is to have a “zero-tarrif policy” and “maintain positive trade relations&#8221; with the United States. The United States is currently Israel’s largest trading partner, with total goods trade <a href="https://ustr.gov/countries-regions/europe-middle-east/middle-eastnorth-africa/israel" target="_blank" rel="noopener">estimated</a> to be valued at $37 billion in 2024. In 2024, the US imports from Israel stood at $22.2 billion, while exports were estimated at $14.8 billion, according to the US trade representative.
“Fully eliminating tariffs on imports from the US is an important step to safeguard the Israeli economy during a sensitive period and to strengthen the economic relationship with our most important ally – the US,” Smotrich said Tuesday.
“We will continue to act decisively to protect Israeli exports and preserve the competitive advantages of Israel in the international arena.”
Smotrich’s move was coordinated with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Israeli Economy Minister Nir Barkat, and must obtain final approval from the Knesset Finance Committee and the signature of the Economy and Industry Minister.
The customs levies sent to be removed are reportedly on fruits, vegetables and other agricultural goods.
In a statement, Netanyahu said that the custom duty reduction will benefit Israeli consumers by possibly reducing their cost of living through an “anticipated expansion in imports of food and agricultural products from the US.”
“Cancelling the customs duties on American goods is an additional step in the policy that my governments have led for a decade in opening up the market to competition, introducing variety to the economy and lowering the cost of living,” Netanyahu said. “We will continue to work to reduce barriers and customs, and bolster our special relationship with the US.&#8221;
The U.S.-Israeli 1985 free trade agreement gradually led to nearly zero tariffs by 1995, apart from some restrictions including quantitative restrictions and fees on agricultural products, which are allowed under the agreement.
“The remaining tariffs are in place partly because we don’t want to be flooded by cheap agricultural products and to protect the local agricultural industry, which means that a removal of the tariffs will require the Israeli government to come up with an agricultural policy to support local producers,” Dan Catarivas, president of the Israeli Federation of Bi-National Chambers of Commerce and Industry, told <a href="https://www.timesofisrael.com/israel-nixes-us-import-tariffs-a-day-before-trump-set-to-levy-duties-on-trade-allies/">The Times of Israel</a>.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz praised the protesters and encouraged others to join in, calling it the “only way to stop the war.”
“Learn from the residents of Beit Lahiiya, as they did, you should also demand the removal of Hamas from Gaza and the immediate release of all Israeli hostages,” Katz said. “This is the only way to stop the war.”
He added that military operations will soon spread in Gaza, which may require more evacuations from combat zones.
“The plans are ready and approved. Hamas is risking your life and will make you lose your homes and more and more land that will be added to the Israeli defense array,” Katz said.
In a video posted by the Center for Peace Communications, protesters are heard chanting, “‘Hamas get out!’ Gaza’s people don’t want wars. They demand the end of Hamas’s rule. They demand peace.”

In response, Hamas <a href="https://x.com/HowidyHamza/status/1904572074275774656" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reportedly</a> started to attack the protesters in the street. Hamas-aligned media outlets have either ignored the protests or claimed they were incited by Israel, <a href="https://x.com/KhalilJeries/status/1904925219656974633" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to</a> Palestinian Christian activist Khalil Sayegh.
The protests marked the first time Gazans had taken to the streets to call for peace since January 2024, though those protests were smaller.
<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/israel-eliminates-dozens-of-top-hamas-leaders-following-ceasefire-collapse" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Over the past week</a>, Israel eliminated more than a dozen Hamas leaders, many of whom were key to maintaining Hamas’ control over Gaza’s population, beyond just its militant operations.
In addition to air strikes, IDF troops have begun ground activities in central and southern Gaza to create a buffer zone between the north and south of the strip.
“We eliminated tens of thousands of terrorists and senior murderers,” Netanyahu said while speaking during a debate in the Knesset, which his political opposition is able to call once a month. “As long as Hamas persists in refusing to release our hostages, the pressure we apply will become stronger and stronger. This includes capturing territories and other moves I will not elaborate on here.”
Netanyahu&#8217;s comments build on Katz’s threat to annex part of the Gaza Strip if Hamas continues to refuse to release the 59 hostages held by the terror group.
“I have instructed the IDF to seize additional areas in Gaza, evacuate the population, and expand security zones around Gaza to protect Israeli communities and IDF soldiers,” Katz said, <a href="https://www.jpost.com/breaking-news/article-847025" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to The Jerusalem Post. “The more Hamas persists in its refusal to release the hostages, the more territory it will lose, which will be annexed to Israel.”
Last month, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/watch-gazan-civilians-support-trumps-relocation-plan-say-their-home-is-uninhabitable" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Daily Wire</a> published interviews with Gazans who said they were in favor of relocating to more habitable locations outside of the Gaza Strip, in line with President Donald Trump’s proposal.
“It is our right in Gaza to have freedom of movement and travel,” said a 22-year-old law student, her face blurred for safety, during an interview obtained by The Daily Wire. “In light of the suffering by the people of Gaza, the need to travel has become urgent, as it is no longer suitable for living a dignified life as other people live.”

Netanyahu Says Anti-Hamas Protests Are Proof Israel’s Policies Are Working 

On Thursday, the BBC once again displayed its inveterate hostility toward Israel, as a producer for the network contacted the Israeli Embassy in London and asked if it could supply &#8220;an Israeli military voice&#8221; who would &#8220;be critical of&#8221; Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu&#8217;s military offensive against Hamas.
Orly Goldschmidt, the spokesperson for the Israeli Embassy, published the message that requested the anti-Netanyahu guest. It read:

In August 2024, the BBC rejected a call from more than 200 Jewish staffers, contractors, suppliers, and contributors for a formal investigation into its alleged anti-Semitic reporting.
The call came in a letter whose signatories included Danny Cohen, the former director of BBC Television; &#8220;9/11: Inside the President’s War Room&#8221; Executive Producer Neil Grant; Fulwell 73 managing partner and former &#8220;Cinderella&#8221; Executive Producer Leo Pearlman; Claudia Rosencrantz, former controller of entertainment for ITV; and Will Daws, managing director at Plum Pictures.
“We write to you today to request an urgent formal investigation by the BBC board into systemic problems of anti-Semitism and bias at the BBC, alongside senior management’s demonstrable failure to properly address the issue,” the letter stated, adding the signatories’ “anguish and disbelief because we fear we have now exhausted the process of raising our very serious concerns about anti-Jewish racism with BBC Management,” <a href="https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/08/01/bbc-chairman-dismisses-staff-complaints-anti-semitism/#:~:text=If%20other%20minorities%20were%20treated,pointed%20to%20the%20whistleblower%20process." target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to The Telegraph.

The letter pointed out “impartiality breaches in matters of public controversy relating to Israel and Gaza,” broadcast mistakes that “suggest bias,” and an account from anonymous sources “of the fear and mental health toll on Jewish BBC staff, their feelings of isolation and alienation from their bosses and experiences of prejudice and racism at work.”
But BBC Chairman Samir Shah dismissed the call for a formal investigation, responding that the BBC was “successful” in creating an “inclusive working environment where people from all backgrounds feel welcome, safe and supported. &#8230; I am satisfied, however, that where we have made errors, the executive has acted appropriately and handled matters in accordance to the guidance as they apply to my colleagues. Following your correspondence, I have asked the executive to review the papers you sent and to see if there’s anything included that has not been previously considered.”
In November 2023, the BBC, which had presented an editorial slant against Israel for years, was forced to apologize for falsely accusing Israel Defense Forces of committing war crimes in its attack on a Hamas command node at the Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza.
A BBC presenter falsely claimed twice on air that Reuters had reported that the IDF had targeted medical teams as well as Arabic speakers instead of what Reuters actually reported, which was that the IDF had included medical teams and Arabic speakers on its team.
“We are hearing from Reuters that is reporting that Israel’s — it says its forces are carrying out an operation against Hamas in Gaza’s Al-Shifa hospital and they are targeting people, including medical teams as well as Arabic speakers. They are also saying that Israel is calling on all Hamas operatives in the hospital to surrender at this point,” the BBC presenter claimed, then repeated, “Once again we are hearing from Reuters that Israel says that its forces are carrying out an operation against Hamas in that hospital that we had just heard of; they are targeting Arabic speakers as well as some of the medical staff there and they are asking all Hamas operatives in the hospital to surrender.”

BBC News, as it covered initial reports that Israeli forces had entered Gaza’s main hospital. We said that medical teams and Arabic speakers were being targeted; this was incorrect and misquoted a Reuters report. We should have said IDF forces included medical teams and Arabic speakers for this operation.”

BBC Shows Anti-Israel Bias Again, Wants Any Anti-Bibi Speaker To Rip Gaza War For Any Reason

In the wee hours of Wednesday morning, President Donald Trump issued a <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump" target="_blank" rel="noopener">post on Truth Social</a> created with artificial intelligence in which he offered a vision of “Trump Gaza,” with high-rise hotels, beautiful beaches, belly dancers, Elon Musk smiling while he was eating on a beach, a huge statue of Trump and a shot of Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sitting together soaking up the sun.
In early February, Trump stated, “The U.S. will take over the Gaza Strip and we will do a job with it too. We’ll own it. I think we will be a great keeper of something that is very, very strong, very powerful, and very, very good for the area, not just for Israel, for the entire Middle East. There will be jobs for everyone.”

“Everyone I have spoken to loves the idea of the United States owning that piece of land, developing and creating thousands of jobs with something that will be magnificent,” he added. “I think the potential in the Gaza Strip is unbelievable and I think representatives from all over the world will be there,” he said, adding that Gaza could become the “Riviera of the Middle East.”
Days later, he added, “The Gaza Strip would be turned over to the United States by Israel at the conclusion of fighting. The Palestinians, people like Chuck Schumer, would have already been resettled in far safer and more beautiful communities, with new and modern homes, in the region. They would actually have a chance to be happy, safe, and free. The U.S., working with great development teams from all over the World, would slowly and carefully begin the construction of what would become one of the greatest and most spectacular developments of its kind on Earth. No soldiers by the U.S. would be needed! Stability for the region would reign!!!”
Some civilians living in Gaza say they’re in favor of relocating to more habitable locations outside of the Gaza Strip.
“It is our right in Gaza to have freedom of movement and travel,” said a 22-year-old law student, her face blurred for safety, during an interview obtained by The Daily Wire. “In light of the suffering by the people of Gaza, the need to travel has become urgent, as it is no longer suitable for living a dignified life as other people live.”
“We want to feel safe and secure — to feel stability and live a normal life,” the female student said, adding that even with the ceasefire, the situation is still dire.
The student added that she feels as if Trump has stopped talking about his plan, which has caused “great frustration.”
“We don’t know if Trump has backed down or abandoned the idea,” she said. “The world forgot us in this situation where there is neither war nor peace.”
She added that Hamas refusing to hand over governance “terrifies” her and other Gazans because the terror group could cause the war to resume, and “with it, the fear of death.”
“We are just civilians,” she said. “We are not part of Hamas, and we don’t want to die.”
Another interviewee, a male with his face also blurred, said he’s in favor of emigrating, as long as he can return to Gaza.
“That’s how most people in Gaza feel — because right now Gaza is uninhabitable,” he said. “Some areas are nearly destroyed, others are completely destroyed.”
One Gaza resident <a href="https://www.israelhayom.com/2025/02/19/well-leave-without-regret-despair-among-gazans-amid-trumps-plan/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote</a> on Facebook: &#8220;When I get the chance to leave this land, I will never feel regret. I will never fill my social media accounts with lies and hypocrisy about how much I miss it. I will regret every minute I spent in this place, where young people are drowning in worries. &#8230;This place is no longer habitable. Everything here is pathetic and disappointing. The problem lies with the place – we are good, we are excellent, we are exceptional for having survived thus far; but now we are leaving without regret. We left regret behind, in this place we no longer wish to give a second chance.”
