Tom Brady got slammed on Twitter after saying that the Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake “wardrobe malfunction” during the 2004 Super Bowl halftime show was a “good thing” for the NFL.

During the “Let’s Go” podcast with Brady, Larry Fitzgerald, and Jim Gray, the seven-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback discussed Rihanna’s halftime performance at Super Bowl LVII, referencing the drama after Jackson’s performance with Timberlake when her wardrobe malfunction revealed her bared breast.

Brady acknowledged as a player in the world’s biggest game, he never got to watch any of the Super Bowl halftime shows because he was preparing for the second half of the game. In 2004, the Patriots played against Carolina Panthers and won 32-29. After his team’s victory, Brady said he was asked about what happened with Jackson.

“We came off the field and that was when we had the wardrobe malfunction with Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson and they [reporters] were asking me about that, and I couldn’t understand what they were telling me about,” Brady shared.

“They’re like, ‘Did you see the halftime show? Blah, blah, blah,’ and I’m like, ‘Nah, I didn’t see anything. I was thinking about the game and was trying to figure out halftime adjustments,'” he added. “It took a while for us to figure out what had gone on. That’s for the fans and not for the players.”

“I think, in the end, it was probably a good thing for the NFL because everyone got to talk about it, and it was just more publicity and more publicity for halftime shows. Is any publicity bad publicity? That’s what they say, so who knows.”

After Brady’s comments surfaced, people called out the former NFL star for being “shallow,” Fox News reported.

“Janet’s career and legacy was nearly DESTROYED due to the incident, and the ONLY thing Tom Brady can speak on NOW after 19 years is the publicity of the NFL?” one person tweeted.

“He should be ashamed for treating Janet’s trauma like that,” another wrote.

While another tweeted, “I don’t think he understands the amount of s*** she went through after that backlash. That comment was too superficial and shallow.”

“So a black woman’s career and reputation is damaged and she was taunted for a number of years by the mainstream media but you know what, it was good for the NFL?!” another added. “Clearly too many knocks to his head.”
