Actress Kristen Stewart said the hit movie “Twilight” was “such a gay movie.”
The 33-year-old Hollywood star, who achieved global stardom starring as Bella Swan in the film series that debuted in 2008, discussed how she now sees hidden themes in the story.
The “Twilight” films were based upon best-selling books of the same name written by Stephenie Meyer.
“I can only see it now,” Stewart told Variety in an interview published Thursday. “I don’t think it necessarily started off that way, but I also think that the fact that I was there at all, it was percolating. It’s such a gay movie.”
“I mean, Jesus Christ, Taylor [Lautner] and Rob[ert Pattinson] and me, and it’s so hidden and not okay,” she added, referencing the film’s other two main characters. “I mean, a Mormon woman wrote this book. It’s all about oppression, about wanting what’s going to destroy you. That’s a very Gothic, gay inclination that I love.”
“Twilight” is about an awkward teen named Bella Swan who struggles to fit in at her new school after moving to a new town with her father. Everything changes when she becomes involved with a local vampire family and falls in love with one of the vampires, Edward (Pattinson), and also develops feelings for a werewolf named Jacob (Lautner). Eventually, Bella becomes a vampire also and has a child with Edward.

All the relationships in the books and films are heterosexual, but Stewart insists the film’s messaging is “gay” nonetheless.
During the same interview, the “Happiest Season” star discussed her own affiliation with the LGBTQ community and how she’s become a role model for the community since coming out as bisexual in 2017.
“It’s not that I wasn’t scared,” Stewart said of announcing her sexuality to the world. “It was just that there was no other way to live.”
She added, “Every single woman that I’ve ever met in my whole life who ever kissed a girl in college is like, ‘Yeah, I mean, me too.’ I’m constantly joking with my girlfriend. I’ll be sitting there and be like, ‘She’s gay too. Everyone’s gay.’”
