DeSantis Holds Massive Lead Over Trump In 2024 Matchup, Poll Shows

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) holds a 20-point lead over former President Donald Trump for the Republican Party’s 2024 presidential primary, according to a new poll from Marquette University Law School.

The poll found that DeSantis has gained ground on President Joe Biden, moving from being down nine points at the start of 2022 to being tied with the president now, 42-42.

Trump trails Biden by 10 points, the poll found, a gap that grew by two points since the start of 2022.

When Republicans and Republican-leaning independents were asked who they would prefer for the party’s 2024 nominee, DeSantis beat Trump by 20 points, 60 to 40.

DeSantis also beat Trump among Republicans and Republican-leaning Independents who did not graduate college, 53.2 to 46.5, perhaps the key demographic of Trump’s “MAGA” base of support.

The poll from WPA Intelligence — a conservative firm that has been used by top Republican U.S. Senators and top conservative organizations like the Family Research Council — also found in a recent survey that DeSantis was more popular among Trump’s base than Trump.

The former president launched unprovoked attacks on DeSantis following the party’s disappointing showing in last month’s midterm elections, calling him names and claiming that he was just an “average” governor, despite winning re-election by historic margins in the state of Florida.

DeSantis did not respond in-kind to the attacks.

“Well, you know, one of the things I’ve learned in this job is when you’re doing, when you’re leading, when you’re getting things done, you take incoming fire, that’s just the nature of it,” DeSantis said. “I roll out of bed in the morning, I’ve got corporate media outlets that have a spasm, just the fact that I’m getting up in the morning, and it’s constantly attacking, and this is just what’s happened.”

“I don’t think any governor got attacked more particularly by corporate media than me over my four-year term,” DeSantis continued. “And yet, I think what you learn is all that’s just noise. And really what matters is: Are you leading? Are you getting in front of issues? Are you delivering results for people? And are you standing up for folks? And if you do that, then none of that stuff matters. And that’s what we’ve done.”

“We focused on results and leadership. And, you know, at the end of the day, I would just tell people to go check out the scoreboard from last Tuesday night,” DeSantis continued. “The fact of the matter is, it was the greatest Republican victory in the history of the state of Florida.”
