A cause of death for comedian Dana Carvey’s 32-year-old son, Dex, has been revealed by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner.

Dex’s death was confirmed to be a result of an accidental drug overdose. The medical examiner found that he had a combination of fentanyl, ketamine, and cocaine in his system at the time of his death, per The New York Post.

The “Saturday Night Live” star and his wife made the announcement on November 16, 2023, via Instagram that their son had tragically died. “Last night we suffered a terrible tragedy,” Carvey shared in the social media post, noting that Dex had overdosed at the age of 32.

“Dex packed a lot into those 32 years. He was extremely talented at so many things–music, art, film making, comedy–and pursued all of them passionately,” the post continued. “It’s not an exaggeration to say that Dex loved life.”

“And when you were with him, you loved life too,” the statement said. “He made everything fun. But most of all, he loved his family, his friends and his girlfriend, Kaylee. Dex was a beautiful person. His handmade birthday cards are a treasure. We will miss him forever.”

Carvey and his wife concluded with a message of solidarity for “anyone struggling with addiction or who loves someone struggling with addiction.”

“You are in our hearts and prayers,” the couple concluded.

Carvey and his wife, Paula Zwagerman, have been married since 1983. They also have another son, Thomas.

The “SNL” comedian recently returned to work on a podcast he co-hosts with David Spade, saying it was “healthy” to get back into his return.

“I thought about this over the holidays and decided to come back to the podcast because I think, you know, it’s a long day when you’re not working and you get in your head,” he told fans during his first episode back, as The Daily Wire previously reported. “And I think it’s going to be a great break, and I think it’s really cool to laugh.”

“I’m kind of on the pain train,” Carvey added. “You don’t know how long you’re going to be on it or when it will stop or when it will get better. In the meantime, all this kind of stuff is very healthy.”
