Actress Hayden Panettiere was wheeled out of her Los Angeles apartment on a gurney at least twice prior to her tragic death, a neighbor says.
Mia Terrazas, who lived in the same West Hollywood apartment complex where the &#8220;Heroes&#8221; star lived with on-again off-again boyfriend Brian Hickerson, said that she&#8217;d seen Panettiere taken from the building by first responders on two occasions — and that the actress had appeared to be &#8220;battered&#8221; both times.
Terrazas told entertainment outlet <a href="https://pagesix.com/2026/08/23/celebrity-news/injured-hayden-panettiere-was-taken-out-of-la-apartment-on-gurney-twice-while-living-with-brian-hickerson-neighbor-claims/">Page Six</a> that firefighters had been called to their location on July 29, 2023, and again on January 16, 2024 — and that when they took Panettiere off the premises, Hickerson had been &#8220;glued&#8221; to her side. The actress, she said, had visible &#8220;bruises&#8221; and &#8220;bright red spots&#8221; when she was wheeled away.
The neighbor said that she worried about the actress — with whom she&#8217;d spoken on a number of occasions — and was afraid of Hickerson.
&#8220;She was just so lovely … and just seeing her and passing frequently and, you know, the little chats that I had with her — she made such an impression, and she was such a bright light,” Terrazas said of Panettiere, who died last Sunday at the age of 36.
“Just as a human being. Never mind the talent; she was a human being, you know? And she deserved so much better. I felt everybody just used her up, and she just deserved better. … I just wish I could have done more. I just can’t believe I’ll never see her again,&#8221; she added.
While she never saw any drugs firsthand, Terrazas said that she had seen evidence of its effects — particularly in Hickerson — over the years.
&#8220;Brian always seemed to be high or disconnected. He just kind of had this odd, flat effect, I guess I could describe it as. Hayden sometimes would seem out of it,&#8221; she explained.
In April 2021, Hickerson pleaded no contest to felony domestic abuse charges of corporal injury to a spouse/cohabitant in which Panettiere was the victim — and at the time, Panettiere was granted a five-year protection order against him.
In 2025, after Hickerson had been seen <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/hayden-panettieres-hoa-took-drastic-step-against-boyfriend-before-her-death">trespassing</a> on the West Hollywood property, the Home Owners&#8217; Association responded by putting up posters warning residents not to allow him to enter the premises. After about a week, the posters were taken down.
Panettiere was found <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/actress-hayden-panetierre-dead-at-36">unresponsive</a> at an Airbnb rental in South Carolina on Sunday, August 16 — just five days before what would have been her 37th birthday — and was pronounced dead a short time later. Both Brian Hickerson and his brother Zach were in the apartment at the time, and had attempted to revive her using CPR and Narcan to reverse the effects of a possible opioid overdose.

Actress Hayden Panettiere&#8217;s on-again, off-again boyfriend raised so many red flags among her neighbors that her homeowners&#8217; association (HOA) put up &#8220;wanted&#8221;-style posters warning residents not to let him enter the property.
About one year before Panettiere&#8217;s sudden death on Sunday, the HOA <a href="https://www.tmz.com/2026/08/19/hayden-panettiere-hoa-posted-warning-of-brian-hickerson/">posted warnings</a> featuring photos of Brian Hickerson, who had been linked to the &#8220;Nashville&#8221; actress for years despite his domestic abuse conviction. The posters instructed residents not to allow Hickerson into the building and to call the police if they saw him on the property.
Mia Terrazas, who lived next door to Panettiere in her West Hollywood, California, condo, told entertainment site TMZ that the posters went up in August 2025 following years of disturbances involving Hickerson and complaints about his presence in &#8220;common areas&#8221; around the complex.
Terrazas said she was afraid of Hickerson and told Inside Edition that she called 911 on a number of occasions over disturbances coming from Panettiere&#8217;s apartment.
&#8220;I was terrified of him, and I have a concealed carry [permit], so that&#8217;s saying a lot,&#8221; she said.

The HOA took the signs down after about one week, Terrazas said, telling her only that Hickerson was &#8220;no longer considered a threat.&#8221;
Hickerson was in the South Carolina Airbnb rental with Panettiere when she was found dead on Sunday afternoon, reportedly sleeping in another room when his brother, Zach Hickerson, discovered the actress unresponsive in a chair.
Police reportedly showed up on Wednesday at a Greenville, South Carolina, home owned by Hickerson&#8217;s grandmother and said that they were there to conduct a &#8220;welfare check,&#8221; though officials said the call was unrelated to the investigation into Panettiere&#8217;s death.

The New York Times <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2026/08/19/arts/television/hayden-panettiere-dea-investigation-drugs.html?eafs_enabled=false">reported</a> on Thursday that the DEA — which often works with local law enforcement to investigate drug-related incidents — would be assisting the Greenville Police Department in the same way that they had assisted the Los Angeles Police in investigating the death of &#8220;Friends&#8221; star Matthew Perry.
The &#8220;Heroes&#8221; star was found unresponsive in a South Carolina Airbnb rental. First responders indicated immediately that she had suffered a cardiac arrest believed to be linked to an overdose. Her on-again boyfriend Brian Hickerson provided investigators with a &#8220;bag of medication&#8221; that she had been taking leading up to her death.
In years past, Panettiere had been open about her struggles with addiction and alcohol abuse — issues she said were exacerbated by postpartum depression after the birth of her daughter Kaya and old injuries that occasionally flared up — and recent reporting suggests that those struggles were far from behind her.

Panettiere&#8217;s friend and rep Kasey Kitchen denied the claims, saying, &#8220;She was in Nashville for a short amount of time and slept for most of it. She also had private security with her.&#8221;
But entertainment site TMZ also <a href="https://www.tmz.com/2026/08/20/hayden-panettiere-director-reveals-intervention-talks/#continued">reported</a> that her team and &#8220;A Breed Apart&#8221; director Griff Furst had discussed staging an intervention for the actress as recently as 2025.
Furst said that while they were filming, it was clear that Panettiere was &#8220;fighting to stay sober&#8221; — and that he&#8217;d agreed when her team approached him about a possible intervention. A cocaine-trafficking ring run through two Penn State University fraternities got busted after investigators discovered one of the suspected college kingpins was accepting Venmo payments for his drugs under his real name.
A confidential informant reportedly <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/penn-state-frat-brother-thought-arrest-was-prank-led-authorities-cocai-rcna593188">told authorities</a> that Thomas Robinson, a member of Delta Upsilon fraternity, was selling cocaine out of the fraternity house under the name &#8220;T-Rob.&#8221; He was accepting payments for the drugs via Venmo — under the name Tom-Robinson, according to court documents filed in 2024.
The alleged multi-state <a href="https://nypost.com/2026/08/19/us-news/penn-state-fraternity-cocaine-ring-busted-thanks-to-absolutely-obvious-mistake/">drug ring</a> operated out of the Delta Upsilon and Sigma Chi fraternity houses and moved large amounts of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/frat-bros-busted-after-pledges-forced-to-cut-cocaine-in-university-drug-cartel">cocaine</a> on the Pennsylvania college campus in 2023 and 2024, state Attorney General Dave Sunday&#8217;s (R-PA) office announced on Monday.
&#8220;This was a coordinated and highly-profitable drug-trafficking crew revolving around two senior members of the fraternities, other fraternity brothers, and pledges,&#8221; Sunday&#8217;s office said. &#8220;In fact, according to the evidence uncovered, cutting and packaging cocaine was, for some pledges, an indoctrination into the fraternities.&#8221;
Robinson and Agostino Abbatiello, 24, allegedly served as the operation&#8217;s main suppliers, making numerous trips throughout 2023 and 2024 to New York City and Philadelphia to buy large quantities of cocaine, according to Sunday&#8217;s office. They allegedly brought the drugs back to the Sigma Chi and Delta Upsilon houses, where the cocaine was cut and packaged for resale, mainly to Penn State students.
Sunday&#8217;s office announced charges against 14 individuals in connection with the bust — four current students, nine former students, and Robinson&#8217;s father, prominent Pittsburgh attorney Paul Robinson.
Prosecutors say the elder Robinson tried to conceal evidence after authorities began investigating his son. He was charged with &#8220;felony tampering, hindering apprehension for taking steps to conceal evidence, including a safe containing drugs and cash, and obstructing the investigation.&#8221;
Abbatiello, who allegedly ran the operation alongside Robinson, surrendered on Tuesday morning after missing his scheduled arraignment on Monday.
Magisterial District Judge Kelley Gillette-Walker arraigned Abbatiello on a number of felonies — including possession with intent to deliver and conspiracy. Abbatiello was denied bail at arraignment.
Penn State said it placed Delta Upsilon on interim suspension while the university investigates the allegations. Sigma Chi is not recognized by Penn State and operates outside the university&#8217;s oversight, according to the school.
The Office of the Attorney General&#8217;s Drug Strike Force Section will be tasked with prosecuting the cases.

Entertainment site TMZ <a href="https://www.tmz.com/2026/08/18/hayden-panettiere-found-while-boyfriend-slept/">reported</a> that Panettiere, who died just days before what would have been her 37th birthday, was discovered unresponsive in a chair by Zach Hickerson, Brian&#8217;s brother. Brian was reportedly asleep in another room of the Greenville, South Carolina, apartment they&#8217;d rented through Airbnb.
<a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/hayden-panettieres-ex-boyfriend-was-scene-died-police-report-says-rcna593125">Responding officer</a> Matthew Bryan said in his report that he first spoke with Zach — who was clearly distraught while first responders worked on Panettiere — but that Brian did not appear to be visibly upset until the actress was officially declared dead.
Additional reporting said Brian and the &#8220;Nashville&#8221; actress had been more on-again than off-again of late, but kept their <a href="https://www.tmz.com/2026/08/17/hayden-panettiere-brian-hickerson-forced-to-keep-relationship-private/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">relationship</a> quiet because her publicity team felt his presence would likely hurt her book sales.
Panettiere&#8217;s estranged mother, Lesley Vogel, also voiced concern about Hickerson in her first public comments following her daughter&#8217;s death: &#8220;This person in her life that we have been trying to get rid of for quite some time was with her at her death, and that was Brian Hickerson.&#8221;
Hickerson has not been accused by authorities of involvement in Panettiere&#8217;s death.
&#8220;I think Hayden was an amazingly talented person in so many departments and I think young people who grow up in the entertainment industry,&#8221; Vogel added. &#8220;It is a struggle and it&#8217;s a very challenging industry and it&#8217;s not unusual for them to sadly find the wrong path.&#8221;
Hickerson and Panettiere had both expressed anger toward Vogel in the past.
&#8220;Hayden&#8217;s mother is by far one of the worst people I&#8217;ve ever met in my life,&#8221; Hickerson told TMZ in May — and Panettiere said on a recent podcast that she&#8217;d been broken by her mother&#8217;s response when she asked if they could just be mother and daughter instead of manager and actress.
&#8220;You owe me,&#8221; Vogel reportedly said at the time, and <a href="https://people.com/hayden-panettiere-estranged-mom-speaks-out-after-death-12061596">Panettiere</a> told podcast host Jay Shetty that she&#8217;d been heartbroken to realize that she&#8217;d meant &#8220;money.&#8221;
The police report indicated that the responding officer was wearing a body cam at the scene, but that footage has not been released.
An autopsy was performed on Monday, and the coroner&#8217;s office released a statement saying that &#8220;no signs of trauma were discovered that would have contributed to the death&#8221; — but the investigation is still ongoing. Toxicology reports could take weeks to compile.

More than a dozen fraternity brothers have been arrested for their roles in a drug-trafficking ring that involved members of two Penn State University fraternities.
Thirteen fraternity brothers from Sigma Chi and Delta Upsilon — four of whom are still students at the university — and one father are facing a slew of charges related to a multi-state narcotics enterprise. The ringleaders of the operation had suppliers in Philadelphia and New York City and sold their product primarily to students at the university, according to a <a href="https://nypost.com/2026/08/18/us-news/13-penn-state-frat-bros-busted-in-cocaine-trafficking-ringincluding-ny-student-at-top-of-the-food-chain/">report</a> from The New York Post.
According to Attorney General Dave Sunday (R-PA), the fraternity kingpins even coerced younger pledges into taking part in their illicit scheme.
&#8220;This was a coordinated and highly-profitable drug-trafficking crew revolving around two senior members of the fraternities, other fraternity brothers, and pledges. In fact, according to the evidence uncovered, cutting and packaging cocaine was, for some pledges, an indoctrination into the fraternities,&#8221; Sunday said in a statement.
&#8220;According to the investigation and a grand jury presentment, two members of the organization — Agostino Abbatiello and Thomas Robinson — were the main suppliers for the group, making regular trips to Philadelphia and New York for large quantities of cocaine,&#8221; a <a href="https://www.attorneygeneral.gov/taking-action/ag-sunday-state-college-police-announce-charges-against-14-people-in-cocaine-trafficking-ring-involving-penn-state-u-students-fraternities/">press release</a> from Sunday&#8217;s office read, in part.
Abbatiello, upon learning that authorities at Penn State had gotten wind of the drug-trafficking scheme, reportedly &#8220;begged them not to talk about his involvement.&#8221;
Five of the men have been charged with felonies related to the operation. Abbattiello and Robinson, along with Mohammed Hurabi and Lars Zeepvat, have been charged with involvement in &#8220;corrupt organizations, conspiracy, and dealing in proceeds of unlawful activity,&#8221; The Post reported.
Robinson&#8217;s father, Paul Robinson, was also charged with felonies related to his efforts to obstruct the investigation and hide or tamper with evidence — including cash and drugs that he had reportedly hidden in a safe.
Robert Zanolla, also 24, was &#8220;charged with felony conspiracy and criminal use of a communication facility.&#8221;
The others — Liam Smith, Michael Brogno, Kaden Howe, Connor Hurleigh, Seth Beardsley, Kyle Ridpath, Daniel Price, and Charles Wiseman — were charged with misdemeanors.
The cases, according to Sunday&#8217;s office, &#8220;will be prosecuted by the Office of Attorney General Drug Strike Force Section.&#8221;
Andrea Dowhower, Penn State’s vice president for Student Affairs, issued a statement following the arrests:

Criminal activity, including hazing, such as this has no place at our institution, and we will cooperate with law enforcement in any way we can. We will continue to enhance our efforts around health and safety and hazing educational efforts for all our organizations.</blockquote>
The university has taken action against Delta Upsilon, putting the entire fraternity on a temporary suspension — but because Sigma Chi is not an officially recognized fraternity at Penn State, that house is not under a similar suspension.

In the span of four months, Lindsay Clancy, the woman who took her three children to the basement of their home and strangled them to death one by one, was prescribed 13 different medications. 
&#8220;I really don&#8217;t like the way I feel on the Remeron and I know that I can&#8217;t stick with taking it,&#8221; Clancy told psychiatric nurse practitioner Rebecca Jollotta through her patient portal in December 2022. &#8220;I started having very intrusive thoughts that I never had before.&#8221; 
Remeron&#8217;s generic drug name is mirtazapine, an antidepressant. It was one of the 13 medications Clancy was prescribed before she killed her 5-year-old daughter, 3-year-old son, and 8-month-old son on January 24, 2023.

In another message to Jollotta, she wrote, &#8220;I also just feel concerningly numb right now, like I have no emotion whatsoever. I feel like I&#8217;m going to die, and I don&#8217;t care. What do I do about this?&#8221;
Jollotta testified in court that she told Clancy her symptoms would &#8220;get better.&#8221;

Prosecuting attorney Shanan Buckingham argued that Clancy &#8220;acted intentionally, rationally, and swiftly&#8221; to kill her children. Clancy waited until her husband was out of the home before committing the act. Figures released Monday by the federal National Survey on Drug Use and Health show that, in 2025, more Americans used marijuana on a daily or near daily basis than either cigarettes or alcohol.
The <a href="https://www.samhsa.gov/data/sites/default/files/reports/rpt57152/2025-nsduh-detailed-tabs/2025-nsduh-detailed-tables-sect9pe.htm">survey</a> counted 21.4 million daily or near daily marijuana users. That stood above 19.9 million daily or near daily cigarette users and 17.2 million daily or near daily drinkers. The 2025 numbers mark the first time on record that marijuana has ranked as the most common daily use substance among the three.

The daily use shift sits within a broader pattern of changing habits around alcohol and cannabis. An overview of consumer <a href="https://greenblazer.com/blogs/news/why-more-people-are-now-choosing-cannabis-over-alcohol?srsltid=AfmBOopBV1h9DMBzpn-e96RgTE3cfRdkw3hMKwpO8hNaeLpvZXDqVZcn">trends</a> in April noted that daily cannabis users had already surpassed daily drinkers in earlier data sets, and that interest in cutting back on alcohol has grown, especially among younger adults. Surveys referenced in that discussion found many people viewing cannabis as a less harmful option in some situations.
The rise in daily use also comes as the Trump administration has moved to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/20-million-americans-say-theyre-always-high-and-even-liberals-recognize-the-craze-has-gone-too-far">reclassify</a> marijuana. In December, President Donald Trump signed an order opening the door to moving marijuana from Schedule I to Schedule III, a category for substances with moderate to low potential for dependence. Earlier this year, the Justice Department acted on Trump&#8217;s order and moved to place &#8220;both FDA-approved products containing marijuana and marijuana products regulated by a state medical marijuana license&#8221; as a Schedule III drug.
The change does not legalize the drug at the federal level but could reduce the severity of related offenses. Nearly 50 organizations signed a letter urging the administration to keep marijuana as a Schedule I substance, arguing it still meets the definition of a drug with high potential for abuse and no currently accepted medical use.
Other measures in the study released on Monday show the past month use of illicit drugs or alcohol among people aged 12 or older at 49.8% in 2025, which was lower than the rates recorded in previous years covered by the survey. However, lifetime use of illicit drugs, nicotine products, or alcohol remained high at 82.9%. Marijuana remained the most widely used illicit drug across the measures.
Among people aged 12 to 17, past month use of illicit drugs or alcohol fell to 9.5%, as past year use of nicotine products or alcohol in that age group stood at 20%. For adults 18 and older, past month illicit drugs or alcohol use was 53.7%, and past year illicit drugs or alcohol use among adults 18 and older came in at 68.6%.
Past year cocaine use was 1.7% among people 12 and older, while heroin use for the same age group in the past year was 0.2%. Methamphetamine past year use registered at 0.9%. Misuse of prescription psychotherapeutics in the past year was 4.4%.
For the 18 to 25 age group, past year illicit drug use stood at 36.3%. Past year marijuana use in that group was 33.7%. Past month illicit drug or alcohol use among 18- to 25-year-olds was 52.8%. Among those 26 and older, past year illicit drug use was lower, but it still remained substantial.
The National Survey on Drug Use and Health is conducted each year by SAMHSA. It interviews people in the civilian, noninstitutionalized population and produces the government’s primary estimates of substance use and related issues.

Federal authorities found three bags of what they believe to be meth inside the van driven by the Mexican man who was shot and killed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Houston last week.
An FBI search warrant <a href="https://www.click2houston.com/news/local/2026/07/15/fbi-search-warrant-says-crystal-like-substance-found-in-lorenzo-salgado-araujos-work-van-after-fatal-ice-shooting/?utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=snd&amp;utm_content=kprc2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> investigators found bags containing a &#8220;white crystal-like substance” that “is consistent with methamphetamine&#8221; inside the vehicle driven by Lorenzo Salgado Araujo.
ICE officers were &#8220;conducting an immigration enforcement operation&#8221; last Tuesday when they tried to stop a vehicle with four people inside, including one they believed was their target, according to the search warrant. The driver, who was later identified as Araujo, &#8220;refused to stop and instead drove over a median in an attempt to flee.&#8221;
The officers did not chase the vehicle and later &#8220;relocated&#8221; it in a different area before &#8220;attempting to stop&#8221; it, the warrant stated.
Araujo then &#8220;rammed an ICE law enforcement vehicle, refused to follow multiple verbal commands, and weaponized his vehicle in an attempt to run over an ICE law enforcement officer resulting in our officer firing his weapon in self-defense,&#8221; ICE said, adding that the driver was in the United States illegally.
The Department of Homeland Security later said that none of the vehicle&#8217;s occupants was their intended target. ICE took the three passengers into custody, who later said they were heading to work at a construction site when the shooting occurred, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/immigration/2026/07/10/migrants-who-saw-man-killed-by-ice-houston-say-he-did-not-ram-officers/?utm_source=chatgpt.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to The Washington Post.
Araujo&#8217;s death was followed by another ICE-involved shooting in Biddeford, Maine, where an officer fatally shot Joan Sebastian Guerrero, a 25-year-old from Colombia, on Monday.
ICE said the Colombian migrant had “attempted to flee” and that the officer who fired the fatal shot was “fearing for public safety.”

A Colorado man says he fell four stories from a hotel window after a counselor served him psilocybin tea during a therapy session and then left him alone, according to the lawsuit he filed this week.
Jacob Ramirez claims counselor Rachel McGuire left the &#8220;therapy session&#8221; in the hotel room while he was under the influence of psilocybin, commonly known as &#8220;magic mushrooms,&#8221; before he fell from a fourth-floor window onto concrete outside a Hilton Hotel in Colorado Springs last May, as reported by the <a href="https://www.denverpost.com/2026/07/10/psilocybin-therapy-lawsuit-fell-from-window/">Denver Post</a>. Ramirez miraculously survived but suffered severe head and chest injuries, racking up more than $2 million in medical bills. 
Ramirez is suing his counselor and her husband, Sheldon McGuire, along with their therapy companies, A Sparrow’s Way and Restoration Counseling. 
The lawsuit alleges medical and direct negligence, claiming McGuire was not licensed to administer psilocybin therapy and that her husband referred Ramirez to her despite that fact. 
“I think it clearly lends itself to somebody who is not used to taking these types of medications being left alone and freaking out,” Ramirez&#8217;s attorney Jared Mazzei said.
“It’s two parts,” Mazzei added. “There is whether she was even licensed, which she wasn’t — and the other part is did she even, at the very least, follow the procedures that you learn when you are obtaining your license, one of them being to actually stay with the patient the entire time, for this exact reason.”
Mazzei said that Ramirez endured blunt force trauma to his head, has no memory of the event, and experiences daily pain from his injuries. 
At the center of the chaotic legal battle is psilocybin, a psychedelic that Colorado voters chose to decriminalize in 2022 under the Natural Medicine Health Act. Under state <a href="https://content.leg.colorado.gov/sites/default/files/initiative%2520referendum_proposition%20122%20final%20lc%20packet.pdf">law,</a> the drug can be grown, consumed, and shared for personal use or can be utilized by healing centers for therapy. 
Colorado&#8217;s experiment is drawing interest from other states, including <a href="https://www.marijuanamoment.net/bipartisan-north-carolina-lawmakers-say-psychedelic-research-bill-can-help-military-veterans/">North Carolina</a>, where Republican state Rep. Allen Chesser and Republican state Sen. Robert Brinson are backing legislation to fund research into psychedelic substances, including psilocybin. 
Brinson, who is the lead sponsor of the Healing through Evidence-based Access to Lifesaving Care (HEAL) Act, called the bill a &#8220;real investment&#8221; into &#8220;mental health innovation, research, and access,&#8221; particularly for those who have experienced trauma.
He believes “momentum is building” for legalizing psychedelics.
“These aren’t fringe ideas,&#8221; said Chesser. &#8220;They are on the path to becoming approved medicines.”
<a href="https://www.wwlp.com/news/massachusetts/two-years-after-ballot-defeat-house-revives-psychedelics-debate/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Massachusetts</a> lawmakers this week approved a five-year pilot program that would allow licensed mental health clinics to offer supervised psychedelic-assisted therapy, despite voters rejecting a broader legalization measure just two years ago. The proposal still requires Senate approval and the governor&#8217;s signature. It would help fund, facilitate, and expand research on &#8220;psychedelic-assisted therapies.&#8221;
Critics, however, are warning against the potential harms and unexpected risks that come with drug legalization. Organizations like the <a href="https://gooddrugpolicy.org/">Foundation for Drug Policy Solutions</a> and <a href="https://learnaboutsam.org/">Smart Approaches to Marijuana</a> (SAM) are among the few.
“Colorado was sold a miracle. Instead, we’re getting a warning label,” cautioned Kevin Sabet, who is president and CEO of both groups. 
“This lawsuit is a reminder that psychedelic mushrooms are not the harmless cure-all proponents promised. If states like North Carolina are considering going down this road, Colorado should serve as the cautionary tale — not the blueprint,” he added.

Former Florida Democratic gubernatorial nominee Andrew Gillum was arrested last week in Alabama on multiple drug charges, marking the latest legal setback for the one-time Democratic rising star whose political career has unraveled since narrowly losing the 2018 governor&#8217;s race to Republican Ron DeSantis.
Gillum, 46, was booked Thursday in Baldwin County, Alabama, on charges of possession of dangerous drugs, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to jail records. He was later released after posting a combined $6,500 bond. Authorities have not disclosed what led to the arrest or identified the drugs involved.
The arrest comes eight years after Gillum appeared poised to become one of the Democratic Party&#8217;s brightest national figures. After upsetting the Democratic establishment to win the party&#8217;s gubernatorial nomination in 2018, the then-Tallahassee mayor lost to DeSantis by roughly 30,000 votes in one of the closest statewide races in Florida history.
Instead of becoming the face of a Democratic resurgence in Florida, Gillum&#8217;s post-election years have been dominated by personal scandals, ethics investigations, and criminal proceedings.
In <a href="https://www.miamiherald.com/news/politics-government/state-politics/article249009610.html">2020</a>, Miami Beach police found Gillum intoxicated inside a South Beach hotel room with a male escort after emergency responders were called over concerns that another man had overdosed. Officers recovered suspected methamphetamine and prescription pill bottles from the room, though prosecutors ultimately declined to file charges because they could not establish ownership of the drugs.
Gillum later entered rehabilitation, saying he had developed an alcohol dependency after his election defeat.
&#8220;This has been a wake-up call for me,&#8221; Gillum said at the time. &#8220;Since my race for governor ended, I fell into a depression that has led to alcohol abuse.&#8221;
Gillum&#8217;s legal troubles continued in 2022, when federal prosecutors <a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-ndfl/pr/former-tallahassee-mayor-and-gubernatorial-candidate-and-associate-charged-conspiracy">accused</a> him of conspiracy, wire fraud, and making false statements as part of an alleged campaign finance scheme. While a jury acquitted him on one count in 2023, the remaining charges ended in a mistrial. Separately, the Florida Commission on Ethics found probable cause that Gillum violated state ethics laws by accepting gifts from undercover FBI agents posing as developers. He later agreed to pay a $5,000 civil fine to resolve most of the allegations.
Under Alabama law, possession of dangerous drugs is a felony punishable by up to five years in prison and a $7,500 fine. The marijuana and drug paraphernalia charges are misdemeanors that can each carry up to one year in jail if convicted.

There’s a new TikTok trend making headlines, and it’s all about moms smoking weed to survive taking care of their children.
They call themselves “garden moms.” Parents are calling pot a coping mechanism, describing their drug habits with zero shame. As the barriers to accessing marijuana crumble nationwide, with multiple states legalizing the drug both for medical and recreational use, users are bringing their daily use into the mainstream.
The Atlantic’s Sarah Levy recently <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/family/2026/06/gardening-moms-weed-parenting/687518/">reported</a> that she found about 76,000 videos under the #gardenmom hashtag. She interviewed an influencer named Taylor Mitchem, who has 120,000 followers and started smoking pot daily when her son was two and a half. Her reasoning was simple: &#8220;If you can have something that can take the edge off a little bit, why not?&#8221;
There have been enough articles about the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/the-high-cost-of-getting-high-how-legal-weed-is-destroying-a-generation">pitfalls of legalized marijuana</a>, and it’s not worth rehashing that argument here. But one of the most interesting aspects of the phenomenon isn’t specific to weed. It’s the larger issue of why these moms feel the need to escape their children in the first place.
In this case, the stigma isn&#8217;t just around the substance. It’s more about admitting out loud that you find your own children exhausting enough to need daily relief from them, whether that comes in the form of wine, weed, or whatever the next thing is. A cute hashtag can’t hide that basic truth.
Before the garden moms — also referred to as “cannamoms” — there were the wine moms who bragged that “Mommy’s sippy cup” was a stemless tumbler filled with chardonnay. Decades ago, there was Valium (“mother’s little helper”), and even before that it was the tranquilizer Miltown, which Levy noted was often prescribed to housewives in the 1950s for anxiety.
For years, women have been coming up with ways to manipulate their minds to cope with the stress of motherhood. Weed is the latest vehicle. It’s not likely to be the last.
And the weed mom trend isn’t new, either. Motherly <a href="https://www.mother.ly/health-wellness/self-care/cannabis-use-in-motherhood-rise-of-cannamoms/">ran</a> &#8220;High on Motherhood: The Rise of Cannamoms&#8221; back in 2024, quoting a mom named Susie who said weed gave her &#8220;the sweetest, most engaged moments&#8221; with her daughter while high. Writer Jamilah Lemieux <a href="https://www.romper.com/life/moms-who-smoke-weed">told</a> Romper the same year she thinks cannabis is headed toward the same social status as alcohol: &#8220;widely available, legal, and socially acceptable.&#8221; ABC News was <a href="https://abcnews.com/GMA/Family/weed-moms-wine-moms/story?id=66184880">asking</a> &#8220;Are weed moms the new wine moms?&#8221; back in 2019. Dr. Edith Bracho-Sanchez, a pediatrician at Columbia, told the network she&#8217;s watched it happen in her own practice: more parents turning to cannabis products to &#8220;take the edge off&#8221; of ordinary life.
Advocates often frame smoking weed as an enhancement to parenting rather than an outright escape. &#8220;I got high so I could be more patient&#8221; sounds a lot better than &#8220;I got high because I wanted to feel good,&#8221; even when the outcome is identical. And the outcome matters. Levy cites Kirby Deater-Deckard, a psychology professor at UMass Amherst, on how being chemically mellow slows your reaction time in an actual emergency. A relaxed parent isn&#8217;t necessarily a present one, and one who is overly calm could be dangerous if she needs to act quickly.
I&#8217;ve watched this shift happen in my own circle. Lately, weed is more prevalent, and, what’s worse, it’s a little too convenient. Ten years ago, getting high took effort: find a dealer, roll a joint, smell like a skunk, hide the paraphernalia from a toddler who notices everything. Also, it was mostly illegal back then. That kept a lot of would-be users from even trying. 
Then came the THC gummies. They have no smoke, no smell, no complicated rituals. Because of the convenience, they’re showing up in places where White Claws used to dominate. 
But there are still problems. This form makes it easier to lose track of how much you&#8217;ve had, and edibles are notoriously easy to over-consume. Romper reported that accidental child exposure to THC edibles has spiked over 1,300% in five years, which makes sense considering that they’re packaged like fruit snacks. The format that made cannabis more parent-friendly also made it harder to notice when &#8220;taking the edge off&#8221; has turned into being zoned out for several hours.
What almost none of this pro-weed content mentions is what happens when &#8220;a little bit&#8221; becomes a habit that&#8217;s not easy to quit. Slate writer Sammi LaBue <a href="https://slate.com/technology/2026/06/weed-health-cannabis-disorder-scromiting.html">described</a> developing cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome after prolonged marijuana smoking. This involved a condition of violent vomiting tied to long-term regular use, nicknamed &#8220;scromiting&#8221; for the screaming that often accompanies it. 
Alice Moon, a cannabis industry veteran, <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/javierhasse/2020/03/13/alice-moon-chs/">developed CHS</a> herself after years of regular use. It took two years and several doctors before anyone diagnosed her because the condition wasn&#8217;t well understood yet. 
You won&#8217;t find any of that in the #gardenmom clips. What you&#8217;ll find is a promise: a calmer, gentler version of parenting, one that doesn&#8217;t yell over spilled milk. The harder part to justify is feeling the need to check out in the first place. 
Cannamoms did not discover a solution to stress-free parenting. They’re just repackaging the same escape mechanisms that, over time, were exposed for being cop-outs. Wine, weed, Valium: It’s all part of the same playbook that treats children like they need to be endured rather than enjoyed.
