Chip Roy Argues Senate Border Package Is A ‘Trap’, Designed To ‘Boost’ Biden

On Monday, Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) unleashed a harsh critique of bipartisan Senate legislation combining border security reforms with money for foreign wars and other causes, calling it the “War, Debt, and Open Borders” bill.

Using the social media platform X, the Texas Republican warned the $118 billion package is geared toward getting President Joe Biden re-elected in a prospective 2020 rematch against former President Donald Trump. Roy also compared some of the 370-page measure‘s provisions to H.R. 2, a border security bill the GOP-led House passed last year that the Democrat-controlled Senate never took up for consideration, and another bill he introduced.

The Senate bill “is NOT well-intended. It is also not a border security bill. It is, however, a bill designed by Democrats to boost Biden against Trump by helping Dems blame Republicans for open borders,” Roy said, “a trap into which some GOP willingly walk in order to fund an insatiable desire for endless wars.”

Roy said the Senate bill “BORROWS” $118 billion to fund $60 billion for Ukraine, in addition to foreign aid for countries such as Israel and Taiwan, while allocating $20 billion for “alleged” border security — money he argued would “ensure” more border traffic, not less.

“The border ‘crisis’ is a crisis not of resources or lack of authority, but rather the result of abuse of law by the President – the willing disregard of the text & spirit of laws designed to maintain operational … control of the border & secure our nation – in favor of using judge-made loopholes & very limited exceptions (asylum & parole) to establish a default of ‘encounter & release’ instead of ‘encounter & remove,'” he said.

Roy implored Congress to “stop” the bill, which is expected to get its first vote in the Senate this week, and he touted H.R.2 and its “leaner, stronger little brother” that he introduced last year, and H.R. 29 as being put together by the House GOP “to close the loopholes & force the executive to follow the law.”

“The Senate ‘deal’ is designed to accept and perpetuate the Democrat scam of mass migration,” Roy said before listing out a series of takeaways from the bipartisan Senate bill, which Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas helped to put together, and how they compared to provisions in the House border security bills.

“In conclusion, this bill is a partisan ‘uniparty’ war bill masquerading as border security that perpetuates open borders, massive debt, & continued proxy wars… a ‘shiny object’ not worthy of further comment beyond immediate burial in the grave,” Roy said, ending his thread with a “#SecureAmericaFirst” hashtag.

Another member of the House GOP, Rep. Dan Bishop (R-NC), also posted a thread to X, highlighting “damaging and dangerous provisions” from the Senate bill that he dubbed the “the Swamp’s latest amnesty disaster.”

While the compromise bill’s fate is yet to be determined in the Senate, House leadership vowed the legislation would not pass the lower chamber, let alone get a vote.

“Any consideration of this Senate bill in its current form is a waste of time. It is DEAD on arrival in the House. We encourage the U.S. Senate to reject it,” said a statement from Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and other top GOP brass in the House.

Biden urged lawmakers to embrace the compromise Senate measure that took months to hash out.

“We’ve reached an agreement on a bipartisan deal that includes the toughest and fairest set of border reforms in decades. And it includes support for Ukraine and Israel and provides humanitarian assistance for the Palestinian people,” Biden said in a post to X. “I urge Congress to pass this bill immediately.”

Trump, who is the GOP frontrunner as he runs another campaign for a second term in the White House, criticized the Senate package. Like Roy, he suggested there was an election angle to consider.

“The ridiculous ‘Border’ Bill is nothing more than a highly sophisticated trap for Republicans to assume the blame on what the Radical Left Democrats have done to our Border, just in time for our most important EVER Election,” Trump said on Truth Social. “Don’t fall for it!!!”
