A Secret Service agent tasked with protecting Naomi Biden, a granddaughter of President Joe Biden, reportedly opened fire during an unoccupied government vehicle break-in on Sunday night.

The incident took place around midnight in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D.C., according to a statement from the Secret Service released on Monday.

“Secret Service agents encountered possibly three individuals breaking a window on a parked and unoccupied government vehicle. During this encounter, a federal agent discharged a service weapon and it is believed no one was struck,” the statement said.

“The offenders immediately fled the scene in a red vehicle and a regional lookout was issued to supporting units,” the statement added. “There was no threat to any protectees and the incident is being investigated by the DC Metropolitan Police Department and the Secret Service.”

The statement did not name anyone, but multiple news reports said the agent who opened fire was assigned to Naomi Biden, who is Hunter Biden’s daughter and the eldest grandchild to the president. Naomi Biden had her wedding at the White House last fall.

Crime is surging across the nation’s capital in 2023. Police data shows more than 6,000 reports of auto thefts — which amounts to nearly a 100% spike compared to this time last year — while violent crime has also risen. Car theft is so rampant in D.C. that local officials recently began handing out free tracking tags for residents to put in their cars in case the vehicles get stolen.

“There are so many cars that are getting broken into in Washington, D.C., it’s possible — just based on the volume — that they had no idea” whose vehicle it was, said Fox News reporter Peter Doocy in reporting on the latest incident. “But if they did know, that’s even more extraordinary.”

The crime wave in D.C. has impacted more than one political figure this year.

Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX) was carjacked by armed individuals last month. In February, Rep. Angie Craig (D-MN) was assaulted in the elevator of her apartment building.

Multiple hearings have been held by the GOP-led House Oversight Committee this year on crime and safety in D.C.

“Crime has become so bad in the nation’s capital that three carjackers broke into a Secret Service SUV assigned to Joe Biden’s granddaughter last night,” Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ), a member of the oversight panel, said in a post to X on Monday. “Lawlessness is rampant in Washington and requires better intervention.”
