Ryan Routh pleaded not guilty in federal court on Monday to allegations that he attempted to assassinate former President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/donald-trump" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Donald Trump</a> at his golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida, last month.
Routh, 58, faces <a href="https://www.justice.gov/opa/media/1370506/dl" target="_blank" rel="noopener">multiple charges,</a> including attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate, assaulting a federal officer, and multiple gun charges. The <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/US/ryan-routh-trump-assassination-attempt-charge-plea/story?id=114348136" target="_blank" rel="noopener">brief appearance</a> before Magistrate Judge Bruce Reinhart comes after a judge ruled that Routh would stay in federal detention and could not be released on bail. 
The charges stem from an incident on September 15 when Trump was golfing, and a Secret Service agent spotted a rifle barrel poking out of the bushes a few holes up from Trump. The agent fired on the gunman, who then fled in a vehicle. 
Routh was later apprehended by law enforcement driving the vehicle that a witness had spotted leaving the scene. Law enforcement searched Routh’s vehicle and found “a handwritten list of dates in August, September, and October and venues where the former President had appeared or was expected to be present,” according to the Department of Justice.
According to investigators, Routh wrote of his plans to kill Trump in a letter that he put in a box given to a “civilian witness.” 
“This was an assassination attempt on Donald Trump but I am so sorry I failed you,” the letter said. 
“Everyone across the globe from the youngest to the oldest know that Trump is unfit to be anything, much less a U.S. president,” the letter continued. “U.S. presidents must at bare minimum embody the moral fabric that is America and be kind, caring and selfless and always stand for humanity.”
Routh has previous felony convictions in North Carolina in December 2002 and March 2010.

The <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/secret-service" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Secret Service</a> was warned of a “credible” threat in the days leading up to the attempted assassination of former President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/donald-trump" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Donald Trump</a> at a July 13 campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, but failed to act accordingly, according to a damning bipartisan Senate report released Wednesday. 
The Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs released an <a href="https://justthenews.com/sites/default/files/2024-09/USSS-HSGAC-Interim-Report-Executive-Summary.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">interim report</a> on the attack that detailed numerous &#8220;failures&#8221; by the Secret Service to secure the site and to respond to threats. 
“The Committee finds that USSS failures in planning, communications, security, and allocation of resources for the July 13, 2024 Butler rally were foreseeable, preventable, and directly related to the events resulting in the assassination attempt that day,” the report said. “The Committee also finds that siloed communications and coordination problems between federal, state, and local law enforcement officials remain unaddressed and were a contributing factor to the failures at the July 13 Butler rally.”
The report said that the Secret Service Lead Advance Agent was made aware of a “credible intelligence” threat to Trump on July 9, but that she still reported that there was “no adverse intelligence” in a security planning document in preparation for the rally. In response to the threat, a Secret Service counter-sniper team was assigned to the rally, but almost no one was told of the threat. 
The Lead Advance Agent told the Senators that she was told of the threat by a Secret Service official who said he couldn’t discuss specifics of the threat. 
The committee said that only two Secret Service personnel interviewed by them “were made aware that there was a credible threat related to former President Trump prior to July 13, only one of whom was made aware of the classified information underlying the threat.”
Trump’s rally in Butler was the first time for a Secret Service sniper team to be assigned to anyone other than the president, the vice president, or an officially nominated candidate. Trump went on to be formally nominated at the Republican National Convention on July 15. The Senators said that they had not been able to find any more information on what the threat was. 
According to the report, the Secret Service also failed to secure the roof of the American Glass Research building, where Thomas Matthew Crooks was able to fire off eight rounds at Trump, striking the former president in the ear, killing one rallygoer, and injuring two others. 
Crooks was also able to “fly a drone 200 yards from the site, use a rangefinder capable of gauging the distance to the former president less than an hour before he began speaking, and bring two explosive devices within proximity of the site of the rally,” the report found. 
The report detailed that local law enforcement warned the Secret Service about the potential threat of the roof, but did not allocate resources to secure it. 
Furthermore, the Secret Service was informed that Crooks was on the roof of the building at least two minutes before he started shooting, yet Trump was not moved from the stage. Prior to that, they had known that a suspicious person was hanging around the AGR building for at least 27 minutes before the shooting. 
“Approximately 22 seconds before Crooks fired, a local officer sent out a radio alert that the individual on the AGR roof was armed, but that was not relayed to key USSS personnel that the Committee spoke with,” the report found. 
Just before shots were fired, a Secret Service counter-sniper saw local law enforcement running toward the building where Crooks was positioned, but “he did not alert former President Trump’s protective detail to remove him from the stage,” the report said.

The sniper reportedly told the committee that it “did not cross my mind” to notify someone to get Trump off the stage when he saw the local law enforcement running with their guns drawn. 
The Senators examined at least 2,800 pages of Secret Service documents and interviewed dozens of agents and local law enforcement officials. 
&#8220;Every single one of these actions is directly related to a failure in the U.S. Secret Service&#8217;s planning, communications, intelligence sharing and law enforcement coordination efforts,&#8221; Chairman Gary Peters said on Tuesday. &#8220;Every single one of those failures was preventable, and the consequences of those failures were dire.&#8221;

The public’s approval of the U.S. Secret Service has plummeted as the agency navigates backlash over lapses in its protection of former President Donald Trump.
The Secret Service’s approval rating has hit a new low, mainly in the aftermath of the failed assassination of Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13. In a poll published on Monday, Gallup found that the percentage of Americans giving the agency positive marks plummeted 23 points.
Roughly one-third of Americans, 32%, rate the agency “excellent” or “good,” while 25% rate it “only fair,” and 36% say the agency is “poor,” according to <a href="https://news.gallup.com/poll/651014/secret-service-job-rating-tumbles-points-new-low.aspx" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Gallup</a>. Those numbers are the lowest the Secret Service has scored in the five times Gallup has measured Americans’ support for the agency over the past decade.
The poll was conducted between September 3 and 15 and was almost completed before another Trump assassination attempt was thwarted on September 15. Secret Service agents noticed a gun barrel extended from a bush just outside the fence of the Trump International Golf Club, where the former president was playing golf, and fired upon a man in the bush.
The suspected would-be assassin, 58-year-old Ryan Routh, reportedly fired no shots before fleeing the scene. He was later arrested and charged with two federal gun-related crimes.

Approval of the Secret Service has dropped among Democrats, Republicans, and independents, though trust in the agency among Republicans has fallen furthest of all.
“Positive ratings of the Secret Service have dropped precipitously since last year among Republicans and Republican-leaning independents (by 26 points, to 20%) and Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents (by 18 points, to 47%),” Gallup notes.
The agency has faced bipartisan backlash over its security of Trump’s Butler rally, where the attempted assassin snuck onto a nearby roof and took several shots at the former president, nicking Trump’s ear and killing one rallygoer. Former Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle announced her resignation soon after the rally as Democrats and Republicans said she should step down.
Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have recently accused the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) of “stonewalling” attempts to investigate the Secret Service failures at the Butler rally. Secret Service is under DHS.
Democratic Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, who chairs the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations within the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/top-senate-democrat-angry-over-biden-harris-admin-stonewalling-after-trump-assassination-attempts" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> DHS was “almost derelict in its duty” to respond to lawmaker requests for documents and information regarding the Butler rally.

The <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/u-s-house-of-representatives" target="_blank" rel="noopener">House of Representatives</a> voted unanimously on Friday to increase security for presidential candidates less than one week after a second assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.
The House voted 405-0 to adopt a <a href="https://www.congress.gov/118/bills/hr9106/BILLS-118hr9106ih.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">bill</a> that would standardize security for presidents, vice presidents, and major presidential and vice presidential candidates. The vote comes just days after a man was arrested after the Secret Service said they spotted him lying in wait with an AK-47 outside just a few hundred yards away from where Trump was playing golf.
“We as a federal government have a responsibility to ensure the safety and the well-being of these candidates. One of them is going to be president, and the election should be decided by voters at the ballot box — not by an assassin’s bullet,” <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/house-passes-bill-boost-presidential-candidate-security-apparent-trump-rcna171845" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> bill sponsor Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY).
“And if the argument by the Secret Service is that they don’t have enough resources or they don’t have enough manpower,” he added. “Then that needs to be addressed immediately.”
The bill says that the director of the Secret Service “shall apply the same standards for determining the number of agents required to protect Presidents, Vice Presidents, and major Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates.”
It also calls for the Secret Service to “conduct a comprehensive review of the provision of protection by the Secret Service for Presidents, Vice Presidents, former Presidents, and major Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates.”
The report would be submitted to the House Committee on Homeland Security and the Senate Committee on Homeland Security.

House Speaker Mike Johnson <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/house/4890505-house-bill-trump-security-assassination-attempt/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> previously that there needed to be concrete steps to ensure candidate safety.
“We have got to get down to the bottom of this. We got to ensure that this doesn’t happen again,” he said. “If they need additional funding, Congress will supply that. But we’re told it’s a manpower problem.”

&#8220;With respect to diligence, line of sight issues were acknowledged but not properly mitigated,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Issues were encountered the day of the visit with respect to line of sight concerns, but they were not escalated to supervisors. While some members of the advance team were very diligent, there was complacency on the part of others that led to a breach of security protocols.&#8221;
Rowe added that the Secret Service agents who failed that day would be &#8220;held accountable&#8221; through a &#8220;robust table of penalties&#8221; that would be administered.
He said that in light of the events of July 13 and the second assassination attempt on Trump on Sunday, the agency would be undergoing a transformational &#8220;paradigm shift&#8221; in how it approaches its mission.
&#8220;The paradigm shift will be a driving force to move the Secret Service from a state of reaction to a state of readiness,&#8221; he said. &#8220;And the vision is for the Secret Service to be more agile, with the ability to escalate protection to the highest levels for numerous protectees for undetermined periods of time. But in order to do this, we need additional personnel, technical assets, and equipment for the sustainment of immediate and future needs.&#8221;

Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) sent a letter on Thursday to the head of the United States Secret Service, saying that new whistleblower claims had raised some serious questions about the agency&#8217;s actions just prior to the second assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.
Hawley addressed the letter to acting Director Ronald Rowe, saying that a whistleblower with &#8220;direct knowledge&#8221; of the sequence of events and security measures taken leading up to and immediately after the second assassination attempt — which took place on Sunday afternoon while the former president was playing golf on his home course — had raised concerns about what was and was not done to protect Trump.

Hawley explained in the letter that the whistleblower had pointed to what he called &#8220;known vulnerabilities&#8221; in the fence line around Trump&#8217;s golf course — and that typically, agents were positioned to mitigate the risks posed by those &#8220;vulnerabilities.&#8221; But according to the whistleblower&#8217;s allegations, they did not &#8220;post up&#8221; agents in those spots on Sunday — and as a result, Trump&#8217;s would-be shooter was able to hole up along the perimeter for 12 hours without detection.

The new allegations, Hawley said — in addition to the Secret Service&#8217;s failure to disclose whether drones or other surveillance tactics had been employed along the fence line at any point prior to the discovery of the suspect — raised five very important questions:

<li>Did Secret Service personnel &#8220;post up&#8221; at known vulnerabilities in the perimeter fencing?</li>
<li>Did Secret Service personnel sweep the perimeter prior to the former president&#8217;s arrival on the site?</li>
<li>Did Secret Service use canine units or Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) elements to monitor the perimeter of the golf course? How were they used?</li>
<li>If counter-surveillance personnel were present at the golf course on September 15, as you stated at a recent press conference, in what manner were they deployed? Why did they not detect the gunman sooner?</li>
<li>What was the specific counter-surveillance mitigation plan for the known vulnerabilities outside the fence line that day?</li>
</ol>
Hawley has been <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/josh-hawley-went-to-trump-rally-site-for-answers-the-fbi-shut-him-out">pressing the Secret Service</a> for answers since the first attempt on Trump&#8217;s life revealed catastrophic failures in security at the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13. As a result of those failures, Trump was shot in the ear. Two other rally-goers were also injured in the shooting, and firefighter <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-kisses-helmet-of-slain-firefighter-calls-for-moment-of-silence-in-his-honor">Corey Comperatore</a> was shot and killed while shielding his family members with his body.

Former President Donald Trump described more details about the second attempt on his life on Tuesday night, praising the Secret Service agent who possibly prevented shots from being fired at the Republican nominee on Sunday.
Trump <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/media/trump-reveals-weakness-efforts-keep-him-safe-says-his-team-has-long-requested-more-manpower" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> Fox News host Sean Hannity that the apparent assassination attempt at his golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida, is a &#8220;very different story&#8221; from when a shooter fired upon him in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13. The former president praised the &#8220;very sharp agent&#8221; who saw the barrel of an AK-47-style rifle sticking out of a fence around 400 yards from where Trump was playing golf.
&#8220;In this particular case, you had a very sharp agent, as good as you could find, and did a fantastic job, but somebody could have missed the barrel of that rifle,” Trump said. “Somebody of lesser talents or somebody that was distracted could have missed or could have been shot, I mean, frankly, could have also been shot.”
&#8220;But in this case, it worked out very well,&#8221; he continued, adding, &#8220;Butler is a very different story. Somebody should have been on that building, and that&#8217;s a different story.&#8221;
Trump was shot in the right ear in Butler on July 13 after gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks gained access to a rooftop point just 130 yards away from the Republican nominee. Crooks fired eight shots and killed one rallygoer, Corey Comperatore, and wounded two other attendees.

Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) released a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/hawley-drops-report-on-trump-rally-security-failures-after-2nd-assassination-attempt" target="_blank" rel="noopener">report</a> earlier this week on the security failures at Trump&#8217;s Butler rally. The report stated that the incident was the “most stunning breakdown in presidential security since the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and attempted assassination of President Ronald Reagan.”
Asked by Hannity if the Department of Homeland Security, which is over the Secret Service, has rejected any requests from the Trump campaign for more resources, Trump replied, &#8220;We have long requested more people.&#8221; He added that &#8220;if there&#8217;s a weakness&#8221; with his Secret Service protection, it&#8217;s that his detail needs more &#8220;manpower.&#8221;
&#8220;We have tremendous rallies and crowds, and that&#8217;s a good thing, but you need more protection,&#8221; Trump said. &#8220;I will say, in Butler, we wanted more protection &#8230; and we never seemed to get that.&#8221;
After the second assassination attempt on Trump, President Joe Biden <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/biden-says-secret-service-needs-more-help-after-2nd-attempt-on-trumps-life" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> the Secret Service &#8220;needs more help,&#8221; and top lawmakers pushed for the agency to provide Trump with more protection.
“President Trump needs the most coverage of anyone. He’s the most attacked. He’s the most threatened, even probably more than when he was in the Oval Office,” House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) <a href="https://www.yahoo.com/news/lawmakers-call-for-increased-secret-service-protection-for-trump-heres-what-former-agents-say-that-could-entail-185406861.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> earlier this week.
Democrat Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut also said Trump&#8217;s detail needs to be beefed up, saying the second assassination attempt &#8220;is deeply alarming and appalling.&#8221;

Speaking on an X space on Monday, former President Donald Trump described what happened on Sunday during an apparent assassin attempt while he was playing golf.
Trump <a href="https://x.com/WarMachineRR/status/1835875861372850310" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> on X:

So I was playing golf with some of my friends; it was on a Sunday morning, and very peaceful, very beautiful weather. Everything was beautiful. It was a nice place to be, and all of a sudden we heard shots being fired in the air, and I guess probably four or five, and it sounded like bullets. But what do I know about that?
But Secret Service knew immediately it was bullets, and they grabbed me, and I think probably the other one, Steve is one of the people. Steve Witkoff, a great friend of mine, a great, great businessman from mostly New York and Florida, great businessman, and more importantly, just a fantastic person. So we&#8217;re in the group, and everybody just — we got into the carts, and we moved along pretty, pretty good. I was with an agent, and the agent did a fantastic job. There was no question that we were off that course. I would have loved to have sank that last putt, but we decided, let&#8217;s get out of here.
And what the gunfire was actually, interestingly, was a Secret Service agent had seen a barrel of a AK 47, which is a very powerful gun, rifle, and he started shooting at the barrel. Started shooting in the bushes. Could only see the barrel. How good is that, right? Could only see the barrel. Based on that, he started shooting and ran toward the target, and was shooting a lot of — I mean, those were the shots we heard. The other one never got a shot off.
And he ran across the street and grabbed his car, hopped into his truck or car, and amazingly, a civilian in that area saw something, and it looked very suspicious, and in the car, drove their car to the back of his truck, of some kind, and took pictures of the license plate, gave him to the sheriff&#8217;s office. Sheriff Bradshaw was fantastic. Very great sheriff for a long time, and within a fairly short period of time, they tracked him down on the highways, pretty high speed chase, and they ended up getting him. They got him.
You wouldn&#8217;t want to have somebody like that out there. You know, he dropped his gun, the AK 47, he left his gun. He left a cameras behind. He left a lot of things behind. So the agent did a fantastic job. The civilian did a phenomenal job. A woman. I mean, who would take you could take 1000 times like that, how many people would have the brainpower to follow him and how many inches of the back of his truck and get pictures so  that they end up getting — and the key was the license. So they got the license, and after they had the license, you know, there&#8217;s all sorts of technology where they can literally pinpoint where this truck is. I never knew something like that existed. And they pinpointed him on the highway. They got him with a high speed chase. So they got him. It was amazing. So Secret Service did a great job. And I think I can say, honestly, the sheriff&#8217;s office, law enforcement, everybody really did a great job. Kind of happy about that.

Trump Describes What Happened During 2nd Assassination Attempt

On Sunday, there was a second assassination attempt in eight weeks on former President Trump’s life.
About  2:00 p.m., a gunman appeared outside of Trump&#8217;s international golf course in West Palm Beach. At that time, Trump was apparently at the turn between the fifth and the sixth holes, not quite to them yet; he was a couple of holes behind. 
Meanwhile, Secret Service agents were advancing a couple of holes ahead of President Trump. They reportedly saw the barrel of a gun between the bushes on the golf course, roughly 400 yards away from Trump. The would-be shooter had a pack of ceramics that were meant to block any sort of incoming shot from the Secret Service.
He had a rifle, an AK-47 with a scope. He also had a GoPro. He was ready to film his attempted assassination of President Trump.
It is unclear whether he got a shot off. It appears that he probably did not. The Secret Service saw him in advance. They shot at him. He then proceeded to flee in his car but a nearby bystander saw the license plate and gave it to the police, and the suspect was picked up by the police about 20 minutes later.
The police announced that the shooter was there to assassinate Trump, and that Trump does not have full perimeter protection, which is typically given to the sitting president of the United States but not to the leading Republican nominee for the president of the United States or the former president.

Part of the problem in terms of security is that either Congress Avenue, a major thoroughfare, would have to be shut down or Secret Service agents would have to be outside the fence when the former president is on the golf course. That would have been the obvious solution.
But the local sheriff said they didn&#8217;t have the staff available to even secure the exterior of the fence, which is where this person set up for the shot. It&#8217;s a chain-link fence, so it&#8217;s not as though the shooter had to hop to get over the fence.
The New York Times <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/09/15/us/politics/secret-service-trump-shooting.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> yesterday:
<blockquote>The Secret Service significantly bolstered Mr. Trump’s protective detail after coming under intense criticism following an attempt on his life in Butler, Pa., on July 13. That beefed-up detail, which includes additional agents and enhanced on-the-ground intelligence, might have played a role in the outcome this weekend, current and former officials said. 
Yet the fact that a gunman was able to get a semiautomatic rifle with a telescopic sight so close to the former president, roughly 300 to 500 yards away, underscored how many urgent problems exposed in Butler remained unresolved — and how difficult it is for the Secret Service to respond to an unpredictable and increasingly violent political environment.</blockquote>
Except for this: This is not super-tough stuff. Anyone could have foreseen that if a man has a 50/50 chance to be the next president of the United States, the most controversial person in modern American history, playing golf at a club that he owns, which he does fairly regularly, it seems well within the possible purview of the Secret Service to actually secure a fence that is not all that far away from the golf course. 
What would have happened if the Secret Service had missed this guy hiding behind the bushes? Let&#8217;s say he had not been a complete moron, and instead of hiding behind a couple of backpacks at the exterior of this fence, he was hiding behind some sort of obstruction. The Secret Service wouldn’t have been able to see him from inside the golf course. 
Let’s say he had waited until President Trump had moved up a hole or two. He’d have been right next to President Trump.
The White House needs to authorize full Secret Service protective detail for the former president of the United States.
President Trump issued <a href="https://www.mediaite.com/trump/i-am-safe-and-well-trump-issues-statement-after-shooting-at-his-golf-club/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a statement</a> almost immediately, saying, “There were gunshots in my vicinity, but before rumors start spiraling out of control, I wanted you to hear this first: I am safe and well. Nothing will slow me down. I will never surrender. I will always love you for supporting me.”
By the way, politically, his message here should be this: No bullet is going to stop the change. 
That should be the message right now. Kamala Harris is making the case right now that she is an agent of change, when she clearly is not.
President Trump should be making the case: No bullet will stop the change.

The reality is that we have an extraordinarily polarized political environment in which a presidential candidate is the victim of two separate attempts at assassinations. When that happens, there should be some questions raised about the temperature of our rhetoric.
The only person who&#8217;s guilty of attempting to kill the former president of the United States and current frontrunner for the White House is the attempted assassin.
But when you raise the temperature and the political rhetoric in a country, you are turning up the heat beneath a pot of boiling water and, eventually, it starts to boil over.
We&#8217;ve been entering an increasingly violent era. That is particularly true since the Black Lives Matter summer, in which widespread political violence was greenlit by the legacy media.
We&#8217;ve now seen two separate assassination attempts against President Trump. I do not think that is a massive coincidence. Radicals are roaming around. They can find each other on social media and find support. Not only that, but they&#8217;re also being told day in and day out that Donald Trump is a deep and abiding threat to the republic.
There is a difference between saying that you don&#8217;t like Trump&#8217;s policies or you think Trump&#8217;s policies are bad for the country, and saying, as Democrats have been saying for years, “Donald Trump as president of the United States would end elections in the United States” or “Donald Trump and his supporters are a threat to the very social fabric of the United States.”
Those are different statements. The same day that this assassin went out and attempted to shoot Trump, the Harris/Walz campaign put out an ad by Bernie Sanders in which he said, “Donald Trump is extraordinarily dangerous. He is a threat to our democracy. He is, among many other characteristics, a pathological liar.”
These are the kinds of terms the Left routinely uses about Trump. “He&#8217;s a dictator in waiting. He&#8217;s Hitler without the mustache.”
They say this while constantly declaring that Donald Trump needs to turn down the rhetoric, that Donald Trump is apparently the font of all evil rhetoric and overstatement in the universe. They themselves are perfectly innocent.
The hell they are.
