WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump broke his silence on the armed intruder shot by Secret Service at Mar-a-Lago over the weekend, jokingly acknowledging the many attempts on his life and the possibility of future attacks.
“I don’t know how long I’ll be around,” Trump told angel families assembled in the East Room of the White House on Monday morning. “Got a lot of people gunning for me.”
<div class="twt-content-only-hide">“You know, if you read about all these crazy shooters, they don’t go after non-consequential presidents,” Trump added, referring to President Abraham Lincoln and President John F. Kennedy Jr., who were both assassinated.</div>
He joked: “So maybe I want to be a little less consequential? Can we hold it back a little bit, please? Can this be a normal presidency for a little while?”
The Secret Service announced on Sunday morning that an armed man was shot and killed by Secret Service agents and the Palm Beach County Sheriff&#8217;s office after he unlawfully entered the secure perimeter at Mar-a-Lago early Sunday morning. Trump was not present at his Florida home when the incident occurred, since he had stayed at the White House for the weekend.

Authorities later revealed that the deceased intruder was 21-year-old Austin Tucker Martin of Cameron, North Carolina, reported missing by his family on Saturday. Around 1:30 a.m., authorities discovered him breaking into the premises, carrying a shotgun and a fuel can. He refused to drop these items and was shot by the authorities guarding the premises.
While the tabloid TMZ reported that Martin was obsessed with the Jeffrey Epstein files, <a href="https://www.tmz.com/2026/02/22/mar-a-lago-armed-man-shot-dead-texts-show-epstein-files-fixation/">citing text messages</a> between Martin and his friend, the Secret Service and the FBI have not confirmed this point.
&#8220;I&#8217;d be careful about leaning too much into that,&#8221; said Anthony Guglielmi, Chief of Communications for the United States Secret Service. &#8220;There is a lot of work to do. As of now, the investigation is being led by the FBI and we are working in conjunction with them to try to learn more about the suspect&#8217;s background, actions, and potential motivations for going down to Florida.&#8221;

The armed intruder who was shot dead on Sunday after attempting to breach Mar-a-lago has been identified after being reported missing by his family.
Austin Tucker Martin, who was reported missing by his family on Saturday, was identified as the man armed with a shotgun and a gas can attempting to breach Mar-a-Lago, law enforcement sources <a href="https://nypost.com/2026/02/22/us-news/mar-a-lago-shotgun-wielding-madman-idd-as-north-carolina-golf-course-artist/">told</a> the New York Post.
Martin’s family has been desperately searching for Martin since Saturday, according to the Post’s review of Martin and his family&#8217;s social media accounts.
Martin’s social media reveals an obsession with drawing golf courses in the Sandhurst region of England, as well as local courses surrounding his hometown of Cameron, North Carolina.

The United States Secret Service confirmed early Sunday morning that agents shot and killed a man armed with what appeared to be a shotgun after he allegedly tried to break into President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in the middle of the night.
According to officials, the incident happened around 1:30 a.m. when agents, alongside a deputy from the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, responded to an unauthorized breach near the north gate of the property. Authorities say the man, believed to be in his early 20s, was carrying what looked like a shotgun and a fuel can when he was confronted. Shots were fired during the encounter, and the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities said no Secret Service protectees were on the property at the time of the shooting, meaning the agents assigned to protect the president and the first family were not present. The confirmation indicates President Trump was not at Mar-a-Lago when the suspect attempted to carry out his plot. No agents or deputies were injured during the incident.
The shooting is now being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, along with the Secret Service and local authorities. As is standard procedure, the agents involved have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw gave an update on the situation on Sunday morning, saying that the FBI was taking the lead in the investigation and that the Palm Beach County authorities would do whatever they could to assist.
Bradshaw also confirmed that when approached by law enforcement, the suspect had been ordered to drop the gas can and the shotgun — but instead, he had dropped the gas can and raised the shotgun to &#8220;shooting position.&#8221; At that point, Secret Service agents had acted to &#8220;neutralize the threat.&#8221;

Armed Intruder With Shotgun Sparks Deadly Secret Service Response At Mar-A-Lago

A 26-year-old man was arrested Monday after he allegedly attempted to break into the Cincinnati home of Vice President JD Vance by shattering windows with a hammer. 
William Defoor was detained after midnight after the Secret Service said they found him trespassing at Vance’s Walnut Hills neighborhood home. He has been <a href="https://www.hcso.org/justice-center-services/inmate-search/inmate-detail/?id=1816987">charged</a> with vandalism, obstructing official business, criminal damaging, and criminal trespass. 
Neither Vance nor his family was at the home at the time of the incident. 
“I appreciate everyone&#8217;s well wishes about the attack at our home. As far as I can tell, a crazy person tried to break in by hammering the windows. I&#8217;m grateful to the secret service and the Cincinnati police for responding quickly,” Vance <a href="https://x.com/JDVance/status/2008188525162721647">posted</a> on X. “We weren&#8217;t even home as we had returned already to DC.”
Vance added that he was skeptical of the news value of posting pictures of the broken windows at his home. 
“One request to the media: we try to protect our kids as much as possible from the realities of this life of public service. In that light, I am skeptical of the news value of plastering images of our home with holes in the windows,” he said. 
Defoor was allegedly able to make it all the way to Vance’s home undetected before Secret Service agents heard the glass windows breaking, the Associated Press <a href="https://apnews.com/article/vance-home-ohio-damaged-man-detained-c53c099124e36642e4dd4d86c38cf33f">reported.</a> A Secret Service vehicle was also vandalized. 
Defoor is being held at the Hamilton County Detention Center and is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday. He could face additional federal charges, authorities said.
“The U.S. Secret Service is coordinating with the Cincinnati Police Department and the U.S. Attorney’s Office as charging decisions are reviewed,” said the Secret Service. 
Defoor’s criminal history includes prior arrests for trespassing and vandalism. In November 2023, a judge dismissed a criminal trespassing <a href="https://www.courtclerk.org/data/image_view_stream.php">case</a> after<a href="https://www.courtclerk.org/data/image_view_stream.php"> determining </a>that he was not competent to stand trial. 
In a vandalism case earlier this year, Defoor was <a href="https://www.courtclerk.org/data/case_summary.php?casenumber=%2F24%2FCRA%2F13827">sentenced</a> to receive mental health treatment. A suspect was arrested on Tuesday night after crashing a car into a security barrier outside the White House. 
The Secret Service said a man drove his car into a vehicle gate just outside the White House grounds at approximately 10:37 pm. His identity was not released, and officials have not said whether the crash was intentional.
&#8220;The individual was immediately arrested by U.S. Secret Service Uniformed Division officers, and the vehicle was assessed by Secret Service and the Metropolitan Police Department and deemed safe,&#8221; a Secret Service <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/us/car-rams-white-house-barricade-suspect-arrested-officials">spokesman</a> said. 
Photos of the vehicle reveal that it was an Acura TSX with Maryland license plates. A bomb detection robot was utilized by law enforcement to clear the scene.

The Secret Service said Tuesday that it had dismantled a network of electronic devices in New York that had been used to target senior federal government officials with telecommunications threats. 
The agency said that the network posed a threat to its “protective operations” and that it could have been used to disrupt Tuesday&#8217;s meeting of the United Nations General Assembly in New York City. Investigators discovered 300 co-located SIM servers and 100,000 SIM cards across multiple sites &#8220;capable of crippling telecom systems and carrying out anonymous telephonic attacks.&#8221; The network is tied to foreign actors and individuals known to law enforcement. The announcement comes just hours before President Donald Trump is set to address the UN.
“The potential for disruption to our country’s telecommunications posed by this network of devices cannot be overstated,” said U.S. Secret Service Director Sean Curran. “The U.S. Secret Service’s protective mission is all about prevention, and this investigation makes it clear to potential bad actors that imminent threats to our protectees will be immediately investigated, tracked down and dismantled.”

The devices were found in the New York Tri-State Area within 35 miles of the UN headquarters. CBS <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/u-s-secret-service-disrupts-telecom-network-threatened-new-york-city-u-n-general-assembly/">reported</a> that the devices were found in abandoned apartment buildings. 
Secret Service agent Matt McCool said that no arrests had been made and that the agency was still determining everyone who was behind the network. 
“We will continue working toward identifying those responsible and their intent, including whether their plan was to disrupt the U.N. General Assembly and communications of government and emergency personnel during the official visit of world leaders in and around New York City,” he said. 
McCool said the attacks happened in the spring but did not reveal which officials were targeted.
“These devices allowed anonymous encrypted communications between potential threat actors and criminal enterprises, enabling criminal organizations to operate undetected,” he said. “This network had the potential to disable cell phone towers and essentially shut down the cellular network in New York City.” 
Multiple agencies were involved in the investigation, including Homeland Security Investigations, the Justice Department, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, and the New York City Police Department.

President Donald Trump will end former Vice President Kamala Harris’ Secret Service protection, which former President Joe Biden had quietly extended beyond the usual timeframe.
Harris’ Secret Service protection will end on Monday, according to a Thursday letter <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2025/08/29/politics/kamala-harris-secret-service-canceled-trump-biden">obtained</a> by CNN. A senior White House official confirmed the cancellation of the Secret Service detail on Friday morning. 
“You are hereby authorized to discontinue any security-related procedures previously authorized by Executive Memorandum, beyond those required by law, for the following individual, effective September 1, 2025: Former Vice President Kamala D. Harris,” a letter from the White House to the Department of Homeland Security read.
Federal law requires that vice presidents get six months of taxpayer-funded Secret Service protection after leaving office. Biden took executive action before completing his term, giving Harris 18 total months of Secret Service protection, NBC <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/white-house/trump-revokes-secret-service-protection-former-president-kamala-harris-rcna227959">reported</a>. Typically, her Secret Service detail would have been pulled on July 21. 
“The Vice President is grateful to the United States Secret Service for their professionalism, dedication, and unwavering commitment to safety,” senior Harris adviser Kirsten Allen said, commenting on the decision. 
California Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom was briefed on the end of Harris’s Secret Service protection, CNN reported. 
“The safety of our public officials should never be subject to erratic, vindictive political impulses,” Newsom spokesman Bob Salladay said. 
In the coming weeks, Harris is set to embark on a national tour to promote her book, “107 Days,” which documents her failed 2024 presidential campaign.

Trump has previously moved to end Secret Service details for other former government officials. Shortly after beginning his second term, Trump yanked the Secret Service details for former National Security Adviser John Bolton, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and former Iran envoy Brian Hook.
He also revoked the Secret Service details for Hunter and Ashley Biden in March. In a Truth Social <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/114180054723679623/">post</a> at the time, Trump said that 31 agents were protecting the half-siblings. 
“Hunter Biden has had Secret Service protection for an extended period of time, all paid for by the United States Taxpayer. There are as many as 18 people on this Detail, which is ridiculous! He is currently vacationing in, of all places, South Africa, where the Human Rights of people has been strenuously questioned,” Trump wrote. “Hunter Biden will no longer receive Secret Service protection. Likewise, Ashley Biden who has 13 agents will be taken off the list.”

President Donald Trump confirmed on Tuesday that Secret Service Director Sean Curran is addressing what could have been a major security breach after an agent attempted to sneak his wife aboard a transport plane accompanying the president to Scotland.
The incident was first <a href="https://x.com/susancrabtree/status/1949206006178689488">reported</a> by RealClearPolitics National Political Correspondent Susan Crabtree over the weekend. The USSS Dallas agent reportedly flew his wife, a member of the U.S. Air Force, to Maryland, and she received an official Secret Service briefing on the trip. The agent&#8217;s wife then rode a bus to the distinguished visitor lounge at Joint Base Andrews, where she was finally discovered and told to leave, Crabtree reported, citing five Secret Service sources.
Trump told reporters on Air Force One on his way back to the United States on Tuesday that the Secret Service incident was a &#8220;weird deal,&#8221; <a href="https://x.com/PhilipWegmann/status/1950256824760095065">according</a> to RealClearPolitics White House reporter Phillip Melancthon Wegmann.
&#8220;Wouldn&#8217;t you think that might be a little dangerous?&#8221; Trump added.
The president said that he had confidence Director Curran would &#8220;take care of it.&#8221;
The agent who attempted to bring his wife along for the president&#8217;s trip to Europe is reportedly in his first year on the job, which means he is still a new trainee, <a href="https://x.com/susancrabtree/status/1949884512944738670">according</a> to RealClearPolitics. The agent has reportedly been in trouble before, as he was written up for misconduct on several occasions while completing his preliminary training at the Rowley Training Center.
Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said that the agency has opened an investigation into the incident.
&#8220;Prior to the overseas departure, the employee was advised by supervisors that such action was prohibited, and the spouse was subsequently prevented from taking the flight,&#8221; Gugliemi added. &#8220;No Secret Service protectees were aboard and there was no impact to our overseas protective operations.”
It&#8217;s unclear if the agent has been suspended as the Secret Service conducts an investigation or if he is still on the job.
The Secret Service has faced public scrutiny for months following the assassination attempt on Trump last July, when a shooter climbed onto a roof near the rally stage in Butler, Pennsylvania, and fired off eight shots before he was shot and killed by Secret Service snipers. Questions still swirl around how the shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, was able to get so close to Trump with a rifle without being stopped by Trump&#8217;s detail.
Weeks later, Secret Service agents sprang into action to stop an apparent assassination attempt on Trump at his golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida.

All such threats should obviously be investigated, but not all suspects should be detained. It is a crime to threaten the president — an inchoate crime designed to reduce threats of future harms. But few potential assassins openly threaten and thus violate the statute. Some say and do things that increase the likelihood that they will actually try to attack. But even among those, only a small fraction will cross the line into action. It is the difficult — perhaps nearly impossible — job of the Secret Service to distinguish between true and false positives, while reducing false negatives to zero. It is unlikely that Crooks or Routh could have been identified before the days in question based on their words and deeds — without also identifying many individuals with similar predictive profiles who would never pose a real threat.

When I began to research the issues associated with predicting and preventing violence, including assassinations, I came across a category of detainees known as “White House Cases.” These cases involved individuals who sought entry to the government buildings, especially the White House, in order to talk to officials. If they appeared to be mentally ill or “disturbed,” they were referred to the Secret Service, which then sought their commitment to locked wards of mental hospitals. I studied one case that seemed to typify this category.
Bong Yol Yang, an American of Korean origin, appeared at the White House gate asking to see the president about people who were following him and “revealing his subconscious thoughts.” He also wondered whether his talents as an artist could be put to some use by the government. The gate officer called the Secret Service, which then had him committed to a mental hospital. Yang demanded a jury trial, at which a psychiatrist testified that he was mentally ill — a paranoid schizophrenic — and that although there was no “evidence of his ever attacking anyone so far,” there was always a possibility that “if his frustrations . . . became great enough, he may potentially attack someone.” On the basis of this diagnosis and prediction, the judge permitted a jury to commit Yang to a mental hospital until he was no longer mentally ill and likely to cause injury.
This was almost certainly an example of a false positive, who was confined in an effort to avoid even the slightest possibility that if released he would become a false negative — that is, an actual assassin whose deadly act was falsely not predicted and thus not prevented. The calculus for “White House Cases” was that it is better that one hundred or more non-assassins be erroneously detained than even one potential assassin be erroneously released.
The issue of false positives and false negatives also arose in the moments preceding the wounding of Donald Trump. According to reports, a Secret Service sniper aimed at Crooks and could have killed him before he fired at Trump, rather than immediately after. But what if Crooks had turned out to be an innocent twenty-year-old who was in the wrong place at the wrong time. His death would have been a terrible false positive. So the sniper erred on the side of not shooting, with the result that it was a near-lethal false negative.
All of this could easily have been prevented if the Secret Service had secured the building, even with its slanted roof, before the shooter got near it. A false positive in unnecessarily securing a building that would not have been used to shoot is no big deal. A false negative in not securing a building that was then used to shoot is an enormous deal. So better one hundred buildings that would not be used be unnecessarily secured than even one building that would be used be falsely not secured.
Another example of how the desire to avoid a trivial false positive resulted in a disastrous false negative was the decision — or nondecision — by the Secret Service not to delay Trump’s appearance on stage until all doubts concerning the person deemed “suspicious” were resolved. There were several people who were deemed suspicious before the Trump shooting, as there apparently are at many events. Each such person should be investigated as soon as practical. Had Trump’s appearance been delayed or even canceled and the suspicious person had turned out to be harmless, that would have been a false positive that caused inconvenience. But failure to delay caused a near-fatal false negative.
Trump has said that “nobody mentioned” the presence of a suspicious person. “Nobody said there was a problem.” He went on: “And I could have waited fifteen—they could have said, ‘let’s wait for fifteen minutes, two minutes, five minutes, something.’”
This raises a related and complex issue. Under current law and practice, the protectee has the power to overrule the Secret Service and make the ultimate decision whether to delay or cancel an event deemed dangerous by Secret Service agents. And history shows that protectees have ignored the expert opinions of the Secret Service in several instances, placing themselves in danger. It must be recognized that when a protectee’s life is endangered by a possible assassin, more is at stake than the life of the protectee. The entire nation — indeed the entire world — is affected by a successful assassination, especially of a president or presidential candidate.
Perhaps the law ought to be changed to reflect this reality. The Secret Service should have more power to delay or even cancel events that in its view pose too great a danger to the nation. This will not be easy to implement in practice, but it could have an impact on the acceptance by the protectee of the more expert opinions of the Secret Service.
To summarize, the preventive intelligence aspect of the Secret Service’s role should favor many false positives — investigative leads that turn up empty — over even one false negative as in not pursuing a lead that could have prevented an assassination. The same is true of securing venues, questioning subjects, delaying the appearance of protectees, and surrounding a protectee. Detaining a suspect for more than a brief period should require some degree of probable or at least plausible cause. Shooting a suspected assassin requires a far different calculation, because it pits life against life.
These are the kinds of judgments that must be made by all preventive law enforcement agencies. The Secret Service has a mixed history in regard to this critical mission. To be sure, we do not know how many potential assassinations were prevented by the Secret Service. Neither do they. It is certainly possible that some of those arrested or detained might have gone on to try to kill a protectee. We know about attempts that were thwarted, as was the attempted shooting of President Ford by Squeaky Fromme, or the attempt on the life of President Truman by a Puerto Rican liberation group. But potential assassins who were deterred, or even those who were prevented by early interventions, are difficult to identify and quantify. The utter failure of the Secret Service to prevent or thwart the shooting of Donald Trump should be evident to all. The resignation of the then director was an important first step in the implementation of significant changes in approach to predicting, preventing, and responding to threats to protectees. These changes should reflect the costs of different types of errors — false positives versus false negatives in differing, but always crucial, contexts.

Six Secret Service agents were suspended without pay due to security failures during the assassination attempt on Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, nearly a year ago.  
Secret Service Deputy Director Matt Quinn <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/trump-assassination-attempt-butler-secret-service-suspension/">told</a> CBS News on Wednesday that the suspensions ranged from 10 to 42 days, and the personnel were placed on restricted duty with reduced responsibilities upon their return to work. Quinn’s revelation came just days before the one-year anniversary of the July 13 Butler attack, when 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks fired off eight rounds at Trump, striking him in the ear, killing one rallygoer, and injuring two others. 
&#8220;We aren&#8217;t going to fire our way out of this,&#8221; Quinn said. &#8220;We&#8217;re going to focus on the root cause and fix the deficiencies that put us in that situation.&#8221; 
Quinn said that the department was “laser-focused” on addressing the problems that left Trump, rallygoers, and the general public vulnerable during the assassination attempt. 
&#8220;Secret Service is totally accountable for Butler,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Butler was an operational failure and we are focused today on ensuring that it never happens again and executing our strategic plan to increase technology, to improve communications, to make sure our personnel are well-trained, equipped and deployed.”
He stated that the agency was now utilizing mobile command posts to maintain radio contact with local law enforcement and had begun using new, military-grade drones. At Butler, no drones were used, and Crooks was able to climb onto a rooftop outside of the security perimeter with a rifle about 150 yards away from the stage where Trump was speaking.
ABC News<a href="https://abcnews.go.com/US/secret-service-agents-suspended-conduct-attempted-trump-assassination/story?id=123628351" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> reported</a> that those disciplined ranged from agents at the supervisory level to the line agent level, and the suspensions had been served in &#8220;recent months.&#8221;
Reports from both the House and Senate concluded that the attack was preventable, finding that the Secret Service was woefully unprepared. 
The Senate <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/secret-service-was-told-of-credible-threat-to-trump-days-before-butler-rally">report</a> found that Crooks was also able to “fly a drone 200 yards from the site, use a rangefinder capable of gauging the distance to the former president less than an hour before he began speaking, and bring two explosive devices within proximity of the site of the rally.&#8221; 
The report detailed that local law enforcement had warned the Secret Service about the potential threat posed by the roof was a possible security vulnerability, but did not allocate resources to secure it. 
Furthermore, the Secret Service was informed that Crooks was on the roof of the building at least two minutes before he started shooting, yet Trump was not moved from the stage. Prior to that, they had known that a suspicious person was hanging around the same building for at least 27 minutes before the shooting. 
Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned from her position about 10 days after the attack, shortly after she was grilled by lawmakers about the security failures and faced calls from both Democrats and Republicans to step down.

These networks are not limited to Iran or the Middle East. They are embedded inside the United States. The regime has exploited Palestinian solidarity movements, college encampments, and so-called cultural centers to build cover and infrastructure for future operations. What appears to be activism is, in many cases, ideological and logistical preparation. The Islamic Republic has skillfully used progressive activists, woke institutions, and even elements of the Democratic political class as unknowing tools — shielding itself behind civil rights rhetoric while laying the groundwork for subversion and violence. In <a href="https://www.justice.gov/archives/opa/pr/two-men-charged-alleged-plot-assassinate-saudi-arabian-ambassador-united-states">2011</a>, an Iranian-American working for the Quds Force was charged with plotting to assassinate the Saudi ambassador in Washington, D.C. That was over a decade ago. The capabilities have only expanded since.
This is not a theoretical risk. It’s an operational doctrine.

The United States must respond accordingly.
First: Federal authorities must treat this fatwa as an actionable threat. DHS, FBI, Secret Service, and intelligence agencies must identify and dismantle regime-linked cells, proxies, and influence networks operating inside the United States under cultural, religious, or diplomatic cover.
Second: Islamic Republic’s top officials who issue or endorse calls for violence must be designated as enablers of terrorism and sanctioned accordingly. That includes financial, digital, and travel restrictions without exception.
Third: The regime must not outlast this escalation. The U.S. must adopt a policy of full support for regime change led by the Iranian people. That means providing technical, financial, and political support to Reza Pahlavi, who has accepted the responsibility of leading the transition after millions of Iranians — both inside the country and abroad—have chanted his name and called on him to represent their national will.
Fourth: The U.S. must support Israel’s precision operations targeting the regime’s nuclear, military, and intelligence assets — and where necessary, extend that support to neutralizing select political and religious officials who are operational leaders in the regime’s state-directed terror infrastructure. This must be framed and executed as counterterrorism.
Fifth: The U.S. must initiate immediate and comprehensive <a href="https://www.hstoday.us/featured/perspective-the-u-s-must-investigate-iranian-regime-networks-inside-the-homeland/">screening</a> of Iranian nationals already inside the country — including visa holders, green card recipients, and naturalized citizens — who maintain any connection to regime institutions, propaganda networks, or clerical systems. If the U.S. accepts that it is under asymmetric threat, it must respond accordingly. A national emergency declaration should be on the table.

These actions are not optional. They are overdue. If left unchecked, this regime will act on its threats.
There is no negotiation pathway. There is no moderation. The Islamic Republic is not a government. It is a transnational threat actor. It issues religious rulings as operational orders. It does not fear diplomacy; it fears consequences.
The fatwa against President Trump is a signal. September 11th began with similar rhetoric. Now, another one has been issued — and this time, the target is named. If the U.S. ignores it, the next attack will not be a press release. It will be a body count.
