Michigan Democratic Attorney General Dana Nessel dropped all charges against seven University of Michigan students on Monday, a twist that shocked defense attorneys after Nessel had pushed for felony charges against the anti-Israel protesters.
The seven students faced misdemeanor charges of trespassing and felony charges of resisting and obstructing police stemming from an anti-Israel protest on Michigan&#8217;s campus last year, The Detroit Free Press <a href="https://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/2025/05/05/michigan-attorney-general-dana-nessel-drops-all-charges-university-michigan-diag-protesters/83452242007/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. The courtroom, which was packed with people supporting the anti-Israel students, erupted in cheers and chants of &#8220;Free Palestine&#8221; when it was announced that the charges had been dropped.
Last September, Nessel pushed for the felony charges against the students, which could have put them behind bars for up to two years if they had been convicted. The attorney general alleged that the protesters used &#8220;physical force to counter&#8221; police officers who were attempting to clear them out of the area.
Nessel, who is Jewish, was pressured to recuse herself from the case last month as critics alleged that she was biased against Muslims. Nessel said that a letter from the Jewish Federation of Greater Ann Arbor defending her amid the accusations influenced her decision to drop the charges. The Democratic attorney general claimed that the letter — which said that Nessel &#8220;has a strong history of uplifting those in both the Muslim and Arab American communities&#8221; — was inappropriate.
&#8220;We have learned that a public statement in support of my office from a local nonprofit has been directly communicated to the court,&#8221; Nessel said. &#8220;The impropriety of this action has led us to the difficult decision to drop these charges.&#8221;
The defendants, Oliver Kozler, Samantha Lewis, Henry MacKeen-Shapiro, Michael Mueller, Asad Siddiqui, Avi Tachna-Fram, and Rhiannon Willow, were also surprised by the decision and will now walk away from the charges in this case. Lewis, who said she faces charges in a separate case over another protest, mocked the attorney general, saying that &#8220;the possibility of recusal was going to be so embarrassing for Nessel that she just couldn&#8217;t bear it.&#8221;
&#8220;And so while all of us, and that includes all of you, refused to cower, she did. And that just goes to show that the bullies and badges and the top pig are just cowards,&#8221; Lewis told a group of her supporters.
The University of Michigan called in police to <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/police-break-palestinian-camp-university-michigan-rcna153229" target="_blank" rel="noopener">break up</a> an anti-Israel encampment on its campus last May as university leadership faced calls to push back on antisemitism at the school. Michigan was one of the numerous universities where anti-Israel students set up camp in the spring of 2024, disrupting campus life and forcing schools to ask law enforcement for help in dispersing the protesters.

As the Department of Education yanks $175 million of federal funding from the University of Pennsylvania for violating Title IX by allowing males into women’s sports, Secretary Linda McMahon should also consider cracking down on other, more common procedural violations of Title IX that have been routinely committed by colleges for over a decade: that is, violations against due process for students and faculty accused of sexual misconduct.
This status quo was created by the Obama Department of Education’s 2011 “Dear Colleague” letter, which gutted protections for the accused in the name of “victims’ rights,” under penalty of losing federal funding. The letter mandated that colleges use the “preponderance of evidence” standard — which only demands that the guilty be deemed over 50% likely to have committed misconduct — as opposed to the stronger “guilt beyond a reasonable doubt” standard employed in criminal trials in actual courts. It also allowed alleged victims to appeal the result of a disciplinary hearing — a form of double jeopardy otherwise barred by the legal system. Moreover, it discouraged cross-examination of victims, claiming this would “retraumatize” them, and enabled a single-investigator model, in which the person investigating the sexual misconduct claim would also adjudicate the sexual misconduct claim and decide as to whether or not the accused was guilty — giving the investigator the near absolute power to be “prosecutor, judge, and jury” at once, as the Foundation for Individual Rights and Education <a href="https://www.thefire.org/news/breaking-new-title-ix-regulations-undermine-campus-free-speech-and-due-process-rights" target="_blank" rel="noopener">called</a> it.
Having received Obama’s memo, colleges went above and beyond — the Constitution, that is: even after President Trump took office for the first time and then-Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos rescinded the Obama-era “Dear Colleague” letter in 2017, colleges kept their kangaroo courts — and began to be taken to court themselves. In two notable cases, federal courts determined that accused students at the <a href="https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2017/09/26/us-appeals-court-finds-student-accused-sexual-assault-was-denied-due-process" target="_blank" rel="noopener">University of Cincinnati</a> and the <a href="https://www.thefire.org/news/court-holds-university-michigan-administrators-personally-liable-violating-students-due" target="_blank" rel="noopener">University of Michigan</a> had their constitutional rights to due process violated. Per a 2019 <a href="https://nyujlpp.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Harris-Johnson-Campus-Courts-in-Court-22-nyujlpp-49.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">study</a> by Samantha Harris and K.C. Johnson, over 500 lawsuits were filed by accused students in the post-2011 period; 340 lawsuits went to federal court; colleges lost over 90 federal decisions; and colleges chose to settle over 70 lawsuits out of court before a decision could be made. This was around the peak of #MeToo and #BelieveAllWomen: in that cultural moment, anyone accused of sexual misconduct was essentially presumed guilty until proven innocent, a horrible inversion of the American rule of law.
Eventually, in 2020, DeVos established a rule ensuring Title IX proceedings would respect due process and treat both accuser and accused fairly. Because DeVos used the rulemaking process, rather than ruling by “Dear Colleague” fiat as her predecessor did, her decision was harder to reverse by the Biden administration. As a result, the Biden rule came toward the end of his administration in 2024, and, thanks to the administration’s overreaching attempt to rewrite Title IX to include “gender identity,” was immediately caught up in federal injunctions and barely implemented by the time Trump took office a second time and officially brought back the DeVos rule. That means that despite the change in administrations and attempted changes to Title IX by Biden, most colleges have been subject to the DeVos rule for most of the past five years.
Nevertheless, <a href="https://x.com/kcjohnson9/status/1893051067799060764" target="_blank" rel="noopener">lawsuits</a> over the past several years have continued to be filed by accused students and faculty alleging that their colleges treated them unfairly in Title IX proceedings. Just this month, the Fourth Circuit <a href="https://www.carolinajournal.com/expelled-unc-student-can-pursue-reinstatement-not-money-in-federal-suit/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ruled</a> in favor of an accused student at the University of North Carolina, noting that due process, live hearings, and cross-examination are crucial in Title IX proceedings. The persistence of lawsuits from the accused suggests that colleges are still not treating the accused fairly, and, as a result, are not only potentially disciplining, expelling, and firing perfectly innocent people — mostly men — they are also undermining the validity of all allegations, which makes it more difficult for real victims — mostly women — to be taken seriously.
College bureaucrats act this way in part because they are concerned with their own interests first: the #MeToo zeitgeist of yesterday still has them convinced that the fallout from blatantly unconstitutional proceedings will be less damaging to them than the possibility of activists calling them “rape apologists” for treating accused students and faculty with fairness. The Department of Education can change this calculus by stripping federal funds from every institution violating the rights of the accused. Only harsh federal action and the potential for penalties where it hurts will show colleges that they will suffer more for presuming guilt and holding unfair proceedings than they will for presuming innocence and treating both parties fairly, as the American rule of law demands.
On a more human note, colleges are often the places where young men and young women form their opinions of the world and of each other. Especially at a time when relations between the sexes are <a href="https://www.economist.com/international/2024/03/13/why-the-growing-gulf-between-young-men-and-women" target="_blank" rel="noopener">souring</a>, it is crucial that colleges be expected to follow the law if they are to continue to be entrusted with taxpayer dollars.

Former University of Michigan defensive analyst Connor Stalions, one of the most controversial figures in college football in recent years, sat down with “<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/episode/ccs-ep-732-member-exclusive" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Crain &amp; Company</a>” for an in-depth interview on the program’s sign-stealing scandal.
An NCAA investigation into Michigan and its former head coach, Jim Harbaugh, allegedly centers on claims that Stalions sent scouts to future opponents’ games to record their play-calling signals. The Big Ten Conference suspended Harbaugh for three games during the 2023 season over the scandal, and Stalions stepped down from his position after he was also suspended. The NCAA has not revealed any information about how Stalions allegedly violated NCAA rules.
During his interview with the hosts of “Crain &amp; Company” released on Tuesday, Stalions gave viewers a glimpse into how he cracked his opponents&#8217; signals on the field, including those of Michigan’s biggest rival, Ohio State. While on offense, teams usually task their backup quarterbacks and graduate assistants with calling in plays by hand motions from the sideline. For most teams, a “live” signaler is calling the actual plays while two or three “dummy” signalers bluff to prevent the opponents from easily deciphering the call.

Stalions revealed that during the Michigan-Ohio State game in 2022, he quickly deciphered the Buckeyes’ live signaler.
“Ohio State didn&#8217;t change their live signaler in 2022 all season. The whole year,” he said.
“Including the game against Michigan?” asked a stunned David Cone, former Michigan quarterback and co-host of &#8220;Crain and Company.&#8221;
Stalions said that he and fellow staff member Denard Robinson quickly realized that Ohio State didn’t switch out their live signaler for the big game.
“You can call anyone from any Big Ten team when you trade signals during the week, and they all say the same thing: ‘Yeah, it&#8217;s the same guy,’” Stalions added. “Now, when you watch any game on TV, you can see &#8230; you can tell the whole time who&#8217;s live.”
Asked by host Jake Crain if Ohio State kept the same live signaler all season “out of arrogance or incompetence,” Stalions replied, “It might be a little bit of both. I don&#8217;t know.” The former Michigan staffer then said that he correctly predicted that Ohio State would swap out their live signaler for the second half.
“I said, ‘Hey, if there&#8217;s any time all year they&#8217;re going to change, it’s going to be this first drive or the second drive. And sure enough, I said, ‘If they’re going to change, it’s going to be that guy, the tall [graduate assistant] or whatever, and sure enough they switched,” he said.
Michigan went on to win that game 45–23, holding Ohio State to just three points in the second half.
“They changed their like route concepts going into that game,” Stalions said of Ohio State. “I don&#8217;t care what your route concepts are, right? If I can tell you&#8217;re going to run the ball or pass the ball … all I care about is the formation.”

Michigan won the national championship in 2024, capping off a perfect season. Between 2021 and 2023, Michigan had one of its best stretches in program history. The team posted a 40-3 record, winning three straight Big Ten championships and making three straight College Football Playoff appearances. After Stalions left the Michigan staff in the middle of the 2023 season, he went on to coach Belleville High School in Michigan as an offensive coordinator, helping the team win a state championship in 2024. At Belleville, Stalions also coached the number-one recruit in the country, quarterback Bryce Underwood, who switched his commitment from LSU to Michigan last year.
Some argue that the sign-stealing scandal surrounding Michigan should result in the program&#8217;s wins from the past few seasons and its 2024 national championship being vacated. Stalions, who joined the Michigan staff as a volunteer assistant in 2018, has maintained that sign stealing isn&#8217;t unusual in college football programs and doesn&#8217;t violate NCAA rules.

The University of Michigan, which has worked with Shanghai Jiao Tong University in Communist China since 2005, suddenly announced it was ending the partnership.
Last October 31, Rep. John Moolenaar (R-MI), the chairman of the House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party, wrote a letter to University of Michigan President Santa J. Ono, warning him of the risks of a partnership with the Chinese university. His letter came in the wake of five Chinese nationals from the Joint Institute studying at the University of Michigan being charged with <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2024/10/02/us/5-chinese-nationals-charged-with-covering-up-midnight-visit-to-michigan-military-site/index.html">deliberately concealing</a> their unauthorized visit to Camp Grayling in northern Michigan. Those nationals came from China to Michigan as students through the joint institute partnership.
“Shanghai Jiao Tong plays a critical role in the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) military-civil fusion strategy,” Moolenaar <a href="https://selectcommitteeontheccp.house.gov/sites/evo-subsites/selectcommitteeontheccp.house.gov/files/evo-media-document/2024-10-31%20-%20Letter%20to%20U-M%20re%20Research%20Security%20House%20Select%20Cmte%20CCP.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote</a>. “Through its extensive military-aligned departments and laboratories, advanced dual-use research programs, and large-scale operational training platforms, Shanghai Jiao Tong drives the PRC’s military modernization and intelligence capabilities. For example, the university is currently home to several national-level laboratories, including three defense-related laboratories. This military-academic integration enables Shanghai Jiao Tong to make significant contributions to the PRC’s most sensitive defense programs, including nuclear weapons, carrier rockets, satellites, nuclear submarines, and fighter jets.”
“Research performed at the Joint Institute advances the PRC’s defense and intelligence capabilities,” he added. “For example, Institute researchers have helped the PRC achieve advancements in defense technologies from propellant combustion modeling and solid rocket fuel research to anti-corrosion technology for military aircraft developed with People’s Liberation Army (PLA) researchers. The University of Michigan announced on Thursday that it has eliminated diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) statements from its faculty hiring, promotion, and tenure processes.
Some university community members celebrated the <a href="https://www.detroitnews.com/story/news/local/michigan/2024/12/05/um-to-no-longer-use-diversity-statements/76773567007/?taid=6751ad37cc54680001f03993&amp;utm_campaign=trueanthem&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter" target="_blank" rel="noopener">decision to scrap</a> the DEI statements, which individuals were asked to provide to demonstrate what they&#8217;ve done and plan to do to advance such policies. They said the statements were used as ideological litmus tests and enforced intellectual conformity.
&#8220;I applaud the provost for ending the practice of requiring diversity statements,&#8221; said Sarah Hubbard, one of the regents on the eight-person board overseeing the university. &#8220;This policy change removes a barrier to diversity of thought on campus by eliminating the ideological litmus test.&#8221;
Provost Laurie McCauley announced the decision on Thursday after forming a faculty committee to review the use of diversity statements.
“Critics of diversity statements perceive them as expressions of personal identity traits, support of specific ideology or opinions on socially-relevant issues, and serve as a ‘litmus test’ of whether a faculty member’s views are politically acceptable,” the committee stated in a report. “Thus, as currently enacted, diversity statements have the potential to limit viewpoints and reduce diversity of thought among faculty members.”
While the University of Michigan Board of Regents is set to meet on Thursday, Hubbard says she doesn’t expect it to address any other DEI issues at this time.

The University of Michigan’s decision follows the Massachusetts Institute of Technology&#8217;s <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/05/06/us-news/mit-bans-controversial-diversity-statement-hiring-requirement-they-dont-work/">announcement</a> over the summer that it would discontinue using DEI statements in the hiring process.
“Requests for a statement on diversity will no longer be part of applications for any faculty positions at MIT,” one MIT representative said at the time.
“My goals are to tap into the full scope of human talent, to bring the very best to MIT, and to make sure they thrive once here,” MIT President Sally Kornbluth said. “We can build an inclusive environment in many ways, but compelled statements impinge on freedom of expression, and they don’t work.”
Harvard University’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences also announced this summer that it would <a href="https://www.thecrimson.com/article/2024/6/4/dei-faculty-hiring-stopped/">discontinue</a> the use of diversity statements in its hiring process.

A fight broke out between <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/michigan" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Michigan</a> and Ohio State Saturday afternoon following the Wolverines&#8217; 13-10 upset victory over the No. 2 ranked Buckeyes.
The brawl erupted after Michigan football players brought a school flag onto the field after the win and tried to plant it at center field at Ohio Stadium, commonly referred to as &#8220;The Horseshoe&#8221; by Ohio State fans.
Police used pepper spray to breakup the altercation that ESPN <a href="https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/42703166/police-probing-use-pepper-spray-ohio-state-michigan-melee" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> lasted for approximately five minutes.

Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day later blamed Michigan for starting the melee by planting the flag.
&#8220;I don&#8217;t know all the details of it, but I know these guys are looking to put a flag on our field and our guys weren&#8217;t going to let that happen,&#8221; Day said. &#8220;I&#8217;ll find out exactly what happened. But this is our field and certainly we&#8217;re embarrassed of the fact that we lost the game, but there&#8217;s some prideful guys in this team that weren&#8217;t going to just let that happen.&#8221;
Wolverines head coach Sherrone Moore said that emotions were running high on both sides.
&#8220;I did see they had the flag and guys were waving it around and their guys charged us. There&#8217;s emotion on both sides,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It can&#8217;t happen. Rivalry games get heated, especially this one, it&#8217;s the biggest one in the country, so we got to handle that one better.&#8221;

Fight Erupts Between Michigan, Ohio State Following Wolverines Upset Win

A Chinese student at the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/university-of-michigan" target="_blank" rel="noopener">University of Michigan</a> was charged on Wednesday after he allegedly voted early on Sunday despite his non-citizen status, according to <a href="https://www.detroitnews.com/story/news/politics/elections/2024/10/30/chinese-university-of-michigan-college-student-voted-presidential-election-michigan-china-benson/75936701007/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Detroit News</a>, which added that the Chinese national&#8217;s vote will still be counted.
Michigan Democratic Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and the Washtenaw County Prosecutor&#8217;s office revealed two charges against the 19-year-old student, who was not identified, in a statement on Wednesday. While the Chinese national is in the U.S. legally with a Green Card, he is not a U.S. citizen, but according to the secretary of state&#8217;s office, the Chinese student successfully obtained a ballot and cast his vote at an early voting location.
The Chinese student reportedly contacted the local clerk&#8217;s office after voting and asked if he could get his ballot back. The Detroit News reported that &#8220;two sources familiar with Michigan election laws&#8221; said election officials cannot retrieve the illegally cast ballot after it went through a tabulator, a rule that prevents ballots from being tracked back to specific voters.
Michigan&#8217;s voter ID <a href="https://www.michigan.gov/sos/-/media/Project/Websites/sos/05mcalpine/photo_id_flyer.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">law</a> allows people to show a current &#8220;student photo ID card from an educational institution.&#8221; The law also allows people to sign &#8220;an affidavit attesting that they are not in possession of photo identification.&#8221; Michigan is a vital battleground state in the upcoming election and has been a major focus of the campaigns of both former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris.
The Chinese student was charged with perjury — making a false statement on an affidavit for the purpose of securing voter registration — and being an unauthorized elector who attempted to vote, according to The Detroit News. Attempting to vote as an unauthorized elector is punishable by up to four years in prison while perjury can result in up to 15 years in prison.
&#8220;We’re grateful for the swift action of the clerk in this case, who took the appropriate steps and referred the case to law enforcement,&#8221; Benson and Washtenaw County Prosecutor Eli Savit said in a joint statement. &#8220;We are also grateful to law enforcement for swiftly and thoroughly investigating this case.&#8221;

On Wednesday, Benson blasted people who have been questioning the security of the upcoming election.
&#8220;We know adversaries to democracy right now are trying to create chaos and confusion and sow seeds of distrust around our very clear and legitimate and accurate and secure processes of running elections, not just in Michigan, but around the country,&#8221; she told CBS News&#8217; &#8220;Face The Nation.&#8221;

The University of Michigan spent about $100,000 celebrating its “DEI 2.0” plan, which included an espresso bar, hip-hop performance, and a lecture connecting “critical race theory and hip-hop.”
The event took place in October 2023, but the details <a href="https://www.thecollegefix.com/umich-spends-100k-on-dei-2-0-launch-cotton-candy-cart-hip-hop-performance/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">were provided</a> to The College Fix via a public records request last month, which reported the findings last week.
The university’s public affairs department <a href="https://record.umich.edu/articles/dei-summit-to-explore-critical-race-theory-hip-hop/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> the event, which is an annual DEI Summit, saying it would “celebrate the 50th anniversary of hip-hop and highlight its intersection with critical race theory, celebrating and exploring the power of storytelling as a driving force for social change.”
The event included “a roundtable discussion with hip-hop artists and critical race theory experts” and performances from Rapsody and others.
“Diversity, equity and inclusion are core values at the University of Michigan,” university spokesperson Colleen Mastony told the Fix in a statement.
“The university’s DEI efforts are far-reaching in ways appropriate to the size, scope, and complexity of our university – spanning across 51 units of the university and serving functions that support our over 50,000 students and over 50,000 employees,” she added.
As The Fix noted, the university spent around $60,000 on its two keynote speakers, paying hip-hop artist, producer, and activist David Banner $25,000 for a 10-minute speech and his participation in a 45-minute moderated roundtable discussion. Hip-hop artist Rapsody was paid $35,000 for a musical performance and her participation in the roundtable discussion. The contracts for each included first-class air travel and coach tickets for their traveling companions, along with transportation, lodging, and meals for two nights.

The university also spent another $32,564 on catering, audio equipment, decorations, and photography. This included a $1,750 mobile espresso cart, a $395 photo booth, and a $550 cotton candy cart.
In the past few months, several university systems have dropped DEI mandates, including <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/university-of-north-carolina-repeals-dei-mandates-pledges-to-focus-on-institutional-neutrality" target="_blank" rel="noopener">most recently</a> the University of North Carolina. The leadership board that governs the university system&#8217;s policies voted in May to repeal previous diversity, equity, and inclusion policies. The school will instead have new neutrality-focused guidelines, and the university <a href="https://www.northcarolina.edu/apps/policy/doc.php?type=pdf&amp;id=147" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> it was committed to free speech, academic freedom, and accepting different viewpoints and people.
A Texas law also banned DEI programs and offices at public universities, which led to 60 DEI employees <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/at-least-60-staffers-laid-off-at-university-of-texas-as-dei-ban-takes-effect" target="_blank" rel="noopener">getting laid off</a> at the University of Texas-Austin.
Harvard University has also recently <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/harvard-nixes-dei-statements-as-requirement-for-faculty-employment-applications" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ended a requirement</a> for faculty to sign DEI statements as a condition of employment.

University Spent $100k To Celebrate New DEI Initiative That Included Espresso Bar And Hip-Hop Performance

A crowd that gathered at the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/university-of-michigan" target="_blank" rel="noopener">University of Michigan&#8217;s</a> Big House — the largest football stadium in the U.S. with a seating capacity of nearly 108,000 — cheered as police officers responded to pro-Palestinian protesters who disrupted the school&#8217;s Saturday commencement ceremony.
The Associated Press <a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-palestine-gaza-war-colleges-universities-campus-protests-ad9deb304a49edbb52f5ae607f08cecd" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> that the protest — which included about 75 people, many of whom wore keffiyehs — happened at the start of the event in Ann Arbor.
&#8220;Regents, regents, you can’t hide! You are funding genocide!&#8221; they chanted while holding up signs with various slogans.
The protesters were prevented by law enforcement from reaching the stage and further disrupting the event. They were moved to the back of the stadium where they remained until the event was over, the report said.
Michigan student Benny Shaevsky, who was at the event, said that the protesters &#8220;continued to disrupt throughout the ceremony.&#8221;
As the leftist protesters attempted to ruin the ceremony for everyone else, numerous people shouted at them.
“You’re ruining our graduation!” one person shouted.
At another point, a group of students chanted at the protesters &#8220;shut the f*** up!&#8221;

Alicia, formerly Johnny, Paans, 31, a graduate student at the University of Michigan and member of the women’s water polo team, <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/05/02/us-news/michigan-trans-athelete-alicia-paans-causes-outrage-at-national-water-polo-tournament/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">is set</a> to compete starting Friday in this year&#8217;s Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship at Texas A&amp;M.
Last year, Paans was <a href="https://collegiatewaterpolo.org/hail-to-the-victors-no-2-university-of-michigan-takes-advantage-of-no-4-university-of-california-santa-barbara-8-6-to-claim-2023-womens-national-collegiate-club-championship/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">playing</a> on the women&#8217;s team when they beat University of California Santa Barbara 8-6 in the championship game.
He scored several goals in the two games leading up to the championship game. Both games were blowout wins for Michigan.
The women&#8217;s water polo team recently promoted Paans as &#8220;player of the week&#8221; on their Instagram page.

Paans also reportedly uses the women&#8217;s locker rooms, <a href="https://reduxx.info/trans-identified-male-set-to-compete-in-national-womens-water-polo-championship-for-second-time/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to the Independent Council on Women’s Sports (ICONS), which cited parents of Paans’ opponents.
“This year’s national championships are shaping up to be a tragic deja vu of domination for the female opponents who simply seek a fair chance to succeed,&#8221; ICONS co-founder Marshi Smith said, <a href="https://reduxx.info/trans-identified-male-set-to-compete-in-national-womens-water-polo-championship-for-second-time/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to Reduxx.
Backlash erupted on social media, too. One X user compared the situation to &#8220;allowing LeBron James into the WNBA.&#8221;

Back in January, the Collegiate Water Polo Association <a href="https://collegiatewaterpolo.org/collegiate-water-polo-association-releases-transgender-athlete-appeal-process/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">released</a> a policy on trans-identifying athletes competing on the team of the opposite sex.
The policy says trans-identifying male athletes must provide proof that their testosterone levels are below a certain level. Athletes may also appeal if they believe their circumstances are &#8220;exceptional,&#8221; the policy says.
“The Collegiate Water Polo Association is committed to fostering an inclusive and equitable sports environment for all those who wish to participate,” the policy states. “This policy aims to provide guidelines for the participation of transgender athletes at the collegiate club level, ensuring fairness, respect, and equal opportunities for all.”
The controversy comes after earlier this month, the Biden administration unveiled new Title IX regulations blocking schools from enforcing blanket bans on transgender-identifying males in girls’ sports at public schools.
Title IX is the 1972 federal civil rights law prohibiting sex-based discrimination at schools that receive federal funding. The new rules are set to take effect in August.

University of Michigan head football coach <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/university-of-michigan" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jim Harbaugh</a> is reportedly leaving the school after winning a national championship this year and is joining the NFL as the new head coach of the Los Angeles Charges.
&#8220;Jim Harbaugh is leaving Michigan to accept the head coaching job with the Los Angeles Chargers,&#8221; ESPN&#8217;s Adam Schefter said. &#8220;The Chargers get their man while the national champions now have a head-coach opening.&#8221;
Harbaugh has had multiple successful coaching stints as a head coach, including at Stanford, Michigan, and the San Francisco 49ers.
Michigan <a href="https://www.nfl.com/news/chargers-moving-to-hire-jim-harbaugh-as-head-coach">reportedly</a> extended an offer to Harbaugh that would have made him the highest paid coach at the college-level but he turned it down and opted to go back to the NFL. Harbaugh led the team to a 34-13 win over the Washington Huskies in the College Football Playoff National Championship earlier this month.

Harbaugh&#8217;s departure from Michigan comes as the program was engulfed in a sign-stealing scandal that could have resulted in him being charged with major NCAA violations, according to <a href="https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/as-jim-harbaugh-negotiates-with-chargers-michigan-now-willing-to-grant-immunity-for-ncaa-violations/">CBS Sports</a>. The scandal was reportedly a large part of his contract negotiations with the school because he wanted the school to provide him with immunity from termination.
&#8220;Under the NCAA&#8217;s coach responsibility provision, which was strengthened just one year ago on Jan. 1, 2023, Harbaugh would be charged with a Level I violation in the sign-stealing scandal if any member of his staff is found to have committed a Level I violation,&#8221; the report said. &#8220;The charge itself cannot be argued; however, the severity of the penalty can be debated before the NCAA Committee on Infractions. The Level I finding would remain on Harbaugh&#8217;s record no matter his level of compliance, monitoring or diligence in the matter.&#8221;
Harbaugh and Michigan were also under NCAA investigation for alleged recruiting violations during the coronavirus pandemic, the report said, noting that he was charged with a Level I violation for allegedly misleading NCAA investigators over the alleged infractions.
The report added that had Harbaugh stayed at Michigan he could have been &#8220;on the hook for substantial legal fees&#8221; to fight both cases, according to legal experts in the sports world.

Jake Crain: Brian Kelly would be clinically insane to leave LSU for Michigan. Why? Not because Michigan isn&#8217;t a fantastic job or that there&#8217;s anything wrong with Ann Arbor, but because he&#8217;s already at a place where, believe it or not (at least in my opinion), it&#8217;s easier to establish dominance than at Michigan.
Brian Kelly left Notre Dame, which is an established brand in college football, to go down to Baton Rouge. He saw what Bama looked like in the tunnel before they got run over in the National Championship when he was the head coach of the Fighting Irish. He wanted to be able to recruit and sign the best of the best, a true even playing field. Louisiana is a state filled with talent every year to the brim from the top to the bottom, from the east to the west. And LSU is the only power in that state. There is no Sparty and nobody’s spurning LSU to go to Louisiana Tech. (Sorry guys.) But Kelly has already found success there, and he&#8217;s building a monster in a place where the biggest monsters roam. He’s compiled an elite staff around him, and he just had the Heisman winner. Why would you leave Baton Rouge where you have all of this momentum to go follow the greatest season ever in Michigan history? There&#8217;s nowhere to go but down.
Michigan&#8217;s going to remain relevant regardless of what Harbaugh does, but the best chance to win bigger for longer is at LSU. Some will say the SEC is the toughest conference in the country. That is true, but the Big Ten just added Oregon, Washington, USC, and UCLA. It&#8217;s not getting any easier, and there’s no division, which will create more division. Ryan Day is trying to put the new Justice League together at Ohio State through the transfer portal, and Brian Kelly has already shown that he can succeed in the SEC. He won the West in year one and the emperor Nick Saban just left Tuscaloosa. 
The fact of the matter is you can&#8217;t make work-place decisions based purely on emotion and fandom. And though Kelly&#8217;s accent may be fake, his chance to dominate is not. While some may believe the smoke if Harbaugh does leave to go to the Chargers or the Falcons, it smells like a Jimmy Sexton special to me, which is always a good play.
Harbaugh hasn&#8217;t gone anywhere yet, but we keep hearing that for Brian Kelly, it&#8217;s a dream job. Michigan is an incredible place. They just won the National Championship. Nobody&#8217;s saying that Michigan is a bad job. But when LSU gets hot, they can get hotter than just about anyone. For Brian Kelly, he’s already there. He’s already established. He’s gotten the hard part out of the way. He won early, he won the West. Yes, he lost to Georgia in the SEC Championship game, but he beat Alabama’s Nick Saban. Then in year two, his defense got run through like a finish line, but he had the Heisman winner. He has an elite staff, he’s recruited really well, and it seems like a pretty good fit.

I do find a couple of things interesting though. First, Brian Kelly is the winningest coach in Notre Dame history. He left and gave that up to go to LSU for a lot of the reasons we always talk about; you can put a fence around that state and the high school recruiting is better there in that state. Also, from a historical and traditional perspective, Notre Dame and Michigan are very similar. So I think it&#8217;s interesting Brian Kelly had to watch Michigan go undefeated and win the National Championship. That is what Jim Harbaugh was able to do at a very similar Midwestern school that Kelly was not able to accomplish while he was at Notre Dame. Then, two of the last three coaches at LSU have been rumored to be leaving LSU. The Les Miles thing was a caveat, and I think it&#8217;s a completely different situation.
Ultimately, we still don&#8217;t even know if Jim Harbaugh is going to leave. Harbaugh may remain at Michigan — even though the news could break any minute that he&#8217;s going to be the next coach of the Chargers. So we&#8217;ll have to see. But from my perspective, Kelly has gotten the hard part out of the way. He already built the foundation at his new place, he took the risk which paid off early, he won the SEC West, and he just landed the number one quarterback in the 2025 class. I don&#8217;t see Brian Kelly going anywhere.
