WNBA player Sophie Cunningham is once again saying what other athletes won’t. This time, she’s addressing the female outrage toward actress Sydney Sweeney’s <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/sydney-sweeney-hits-back-at-nude-sports-ad-outrage-without-saying-a-word">risqué sports gambling ad</a> for the company Novig.
&#8220;Why are girls mad?&#8221; Cunningham asked on her podcast &#8220;No Hesitation&#8221; on Thursday.
Multiple female athletes, from amateurs to Olympians, denounced Sweeney’s naked performance in the sports betting advertisement, arguing that the 42-second commercial is setting women’s sports back. The furious group rushed to social media to share videos of themselves competing or training, saying that they represent what women&#8217;s sports look like, not Sweeney&#8217;s ad.
The only problem is Sweeney wasn’t trying to be an athlete. She was promoting an app that is only for sports gambling.
Thankfully, Cunningham — who often has the common-sense opinion — saw through the performative outrage.
&#8220;That is literally what she does. Why is anyone mad? It is a gambling ad: men, sports, pretty much naked women. Of course, that’s going to draw attention,&#8221; she said.
Cunningham made it clear that she isn’t encouraging girls to strip down, adding that there are actual issues setting women’s sports back, and Sweeney&#8217;s ad isn’t one of them.
&#8220;Do I agree with it? Morally, I think it’s kind of weird, but each to their own. Go do your thing, sis,&#8221; Cunningham said.
Sweeney did her thing, and apparently no one was forcing her to.
Novig CEO Jacob Fortinsky said Tuesday while speaking on a Front Office Sports panel that the actress was the one who pushed for the ad to be as spicy as it was. He said it was Sweeney &#8220;driving a lot of the visuals and the messaging.&#8221;
He then reiterated what some athletes couldn’t comprehend: that the ad had nothing to do with women’s sports.
&#8220;We&#8217;re hugely supportive of women&#8217;s sports. I think it&#8217;s a huge component of our platform,&#8221; Fortinsky said. &#8220;We never intended to portray female sports.&#8221;
Women’s sports have been all the talk for the last couple of months thanks to Cunningham sticking up for female athletes, unlike her WNBA counterparts.
In July, she told <a href="https://www.espn.com/wnba/story/_/id/49306657/sophie-cunningham-finger-point-indiana-fever-wnba">ESPN</a> that she believes women’s sports are for biological women.
&#8220;I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn&#8217;t have to go against biological men,&#8221; Cunningham told ESPN.
That simple truth set the WNBA world on fire as multiple WNBA players and coaches had a meltdown over a statement in defense of women&#8217;s sports. Cunningham’s lifelong friend and former podcast host, West Wilson, even spoke out against the Indiana Fever star.
The former Summer House cast member said trans athletes are a &#8220;borderline non-existent issue.&#8221; Wilson is no longer podcasting with Cunningham.
But like with the other haters in her life, Cunningham ignores the noise and continues to speak out about what she believes is right.
&#8220;I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest.&#8221;

And now for the stupid controversy of the day. 
Sydney Sweeney is a good-looking woman.
That’s inarguable, but online everything is arguable. She would not be famous if she were not good-looking.
Let’s point out how wild things have gotten. Sydney Sweeney is doing an ad for a sports betting app called Novig.  The ad involves her being scantily clad. In the opening shot, she holds two footballs in front of her greatest assets, then poses, still scantily clad, with various pieces of sporting equipment.
People went crazy. Beatriz Hatz, a U.S. Paralympian and &#8220;Love Island&#8221; season eight contestant, was very, very upset.
When I talk about people who aren&#8217;t exhibitionists, I go straight to &#8220;Love Island&#8221; contestants.

Hatz wrote, “Instead of watching Sydney Sweeney&#8217;s ads, let’s watch actual women in sports.”
Sorry that people don&#8217;t want to watch your athletic feats as much as people generally are drawn to good-looking naked people.
American artistic gymnast Gracie Kramer fired, “This ad is honestly infuriating. I&#8217;ve spent my entire life competing in a sport where female athletes have been oversexualized, reduced to our bodies, and forced to fight to be taken seriously for what we can actually do.”
Sydney Sweeney was not claiming to be a gymnast or a baseball player. That was not my impression of that ad. 
Let&#8217;s be real, people weren&#8217;t watching the ad for the sports stats. 
Kramer continued, “So to see women&#8217;s sports once again being marketed through the male gaze feels like a massive step backward. We should not have to take our clothes off to convince men that women belong in sports, or that we&#8217;re only worth watching if we&#8217;re showing enough skin.”
Sweeney was not making the case that she was trying to make the WNBA.
“And if you still don&#8217;t think it&#8217;s that deep, I invite you to do your best to empathize with every female athlete who has had to compete while simultaneously being objectified on the court, disrespected on the field, and oversexualized in the media,” Kramer wrote.
I have a question for Kramer: What does this have to do with you? I feel like you are inserting yourself into this story.
“I don&#8217;t typically speak out on controversial topics, but to me, this isn&#8217;t controversial,” Kramer declared. “This is about demanding respect for female athletes and protecting the future of women in sports.”
What the heck? Sydney Sweeney is not a woman in sports. She&#8217;s a woman in a sports commercial. 
Sweeney posted covers of ESPN&#8217;s Body Issue in response. ESPN has been doing this ridiculous Body Issue for years, where they get a bunch of athletes to pose nude. I always thought it was strange. 
In a statement to the Novig website, Sweeney said, “The campaign was about embracing a fun idea. The concept is simple: Cut through the noise and put the focus entirely on sports. The campaign brings that idea to life with confidence, humor, and a playful edge.”
Our friend Clay Travis had some thoughts, saying:
<blockquote>Women&#8217;s athletics is in no way impacted by a pro sports gambling ad by Sydney Sweeney, but why in the world is it the case that anyone would even make that connection, especially when female athletes, by and large, are staying quiet about men competing in women&#8217;s sports? Don&#8217;t you think that if you were going to talk about things that are attacking female athletics, you might say, “Hey, maybe the WNBA should be able to tell us what the W in WNBA stands for. Maybe we should keep men out of women&#8217;s locker rooms. Maybe we should keep boys out of girls’ locker rooms?” Instead, these women are claiming that they&#8217;re offended by Sydney Sweeney.</blockquote>
He is 100% correct. 
I want to point out something else that’s funny. All of this shows you how far we have moved in the American public discourse. 
There was a 2005 ad that was very controversial in its time, but now seems tame by comparison. It was a Carl&#8217;s Jr. commercial featuring Paris Hilton. I remember this ad because it came out right around the time my book, “Porn Generation,” came out about the pornification of American society. 
I&#8217;ve been on the anti-porn bandwagon for literally decades, and I have been irritated by female nudity used to market sports for pretty much all my life. I was a long-time subscriber to Sports Illustrated, and I&#8217;m one of the seven people who called up Sports Illustrated and said, “Please don&#8217;t send the swimsuit edition, which has nothing to do with sports. Please just give me an extra edition of the magazine about baseball and basketball.”
The Carl&#8217;s Jr. ad showed Paris Hilton in a bathing suit soaping up a car. She was wearing more clothes than Sydney Sweeney, and it launched a thousand think pieces.
The ad made a lot of headlines back then, and I&#8217;m old enough to remember when conservatives thought that was bad.
So here&#8217;s the point: I still think this stuff is kind of bad. I&#8217;m not in favor of it — but the reason we are seeing so many conservatives rushing to defend Sydney Sweeney is because of how far the Left has moved: In 2005, they defended the Paris Hilton commercial because they said pornography was good.
That was the case. Sex work was work. Pornography was good. Shatter the systems through nudity. 
The Right responded, “No, we&#8217;re not doing any of that.”
But now the Left has moved all the way from where they were to “Boys can be girls.” Additionally, “Female beauty isn&#8217;t a thing,” and “Sydney Sweeney isn&#8217;t a beautiful woman,” and “We don&#8217;t even know if she is a woman. Maybe she&#8217;s a man.” And “Maybe a dude with a twig and berries is more of a woman than Sydney Sweeney.” And “Being fat and ugly is a new form of beauty.”
These statements all show you how far the Left has moved. Thus the Right responded, ”You know what is good? Good-looking women.”
Things have gotten crazy over the past 20 years. It was a more innocent time in 2005, when we debated whether those commercials were appropriate. 
Now the debate is over whether women exist in humanity and whether there are, in fact, standards of beauty that are clearly applicable.
All of this tells us more about where we&#8217;ve moved as a society than it does about Sydney Sweeney  — or sports.

How Sydney Sweeney’s Critics Are Showing More Than She Is

Okay ladies, huddle up. You’re probably hearing a lot of buzz about who qualifies as a “real” female athlete in women’s sports. Does it count if you happen to be frolicking in the nude with strategically placed footballs for a betting platform? The internet will be the judge of that. 
By this point, you may be able to recall Sydney Sweeney’s scantily clad <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bp0T184hVY0">Novig ad</a> as she beats the “sports … sports … sports” drum backed by a funky Anderson. Paak beat. “You can’t trade this, I just look good here,” she says while draped over a billiard table in nothing but Novig-branded tighty-whities. 
“No betting on wars or deaths, and no politics,” she assures us. Glad we cleared up the meaning of “sports.” Tying a bow on the brand for which <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2026/09/14/style/sydney-sweeney-sports-ad-novig.html">she’s an equity partner</a>, she says, “Just you, your takes, and sports.” Like every other Sydney Sweeney promo (does she ever not flaunt the goods?), the ad did its job. Cue 40 million views and the obligatory outragepocalypse.
Four-time Australian Olympic gold medalist <a href="https://apnews.com/article/sydney-sweeney-ad-novig-02491031050ed505840b8bda8ac2fdb3">Ariarne Titmus</a> posted to Instagram, “I can’t describe how infuriated I feel … How do we live in a world where monetizing a woman’s body and sexualizing women’s sport is still a thing?”
Just after a race, British sprinter <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/DdRI7oKCpOH/?img_index=2">Amy Hunt</a> breathlessly told the BBC, “Sydney Sweeney, this is what women in sport look like … muscles, hard work, sweat, blood, tears.” 
Taking the cue on the so-called “healing” moment from a few big stars across the athletic space, social media immediately drowned itself in videos of women (nay beasts, which by the way is a massive CrossFit compliment) deadlifting, sprinting, tumbling, throwing weights every which way and that, and flexing their fittest form at their competitive best. It was the spontaneous internet Olympics of muscle mommies and fit girlies. To quote Chris Farley in “Tommy Boy” when it comes to their capabilities: “Holy schnikes.” 
U.S. gymnast <a href="https://www.facebook.com/reel/1395360435904060">Gracie Kramer</a> noted, “We shouldn’t all have to worry about the way we look every single day in order to do the things that we want to do.” She told the <a href="https://www.bbc.com/sport/athletics/articles/c9dw905jw5no">BBC</a> that she “just wanted to uplift women and remind them that you may see these types of ads but remember that this is not the only thing that matters.”
Kramer essentially launched the trend of female athletes posting their own me-toos with the battle cry “this is what women in sport look like.” Along with a carousel of herself and friends in thong bikinis, crop tops, and sports bras, she <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/DdR8SclEmD0/?hl=en&amp;img_index=1">wrote</a>, “Recognize that your value extends so far beyond your appearance.” But just in case it doesn’t, here’s a cute butt shot from the stands of a WNBA game.
Under the caption, a supportive comment read, “Now let’s show the same enthusiasm about getting men out of women’s sports [muscle emoji].” That was followed by another user’s reply, “Don’t use this movement here to spread your transphobia.” 
“It’s amazing women are attacking women and yet protecting men in women’s spaces. Make it make sense,” wrote a third person who appeared to be a man, totally mansplaining, right?
I wondered if I missed the part where Sweeney claimed she was actively participating in all the sports she was promoting. She’s obviously not getting drafted for the NFL anytime soon, but I’m pretty sure even women’s flag football typically requires a mouthguard, at least. And, like, somewhere to attach the flags. 
For the record, Sweeney’s a former athlete. “I grew up loving sports,” she told <a href="https://www.complex.com/pop-culture/a/khal/sydney-sweeney-novig-just-sports-campaign-exclusive-interview">Complex</a>. “I was on a soccer team, I was on a softball team, I was on a snow ski team. I learned how to slalom ski when I was little, and I did MMA. So sports have been a really big part of my life, and I love watching hockey and boxing … I have a really huge appreciation for every single fighter.”
So is the problem that we can’t accept that the curvaceous denim darling from the American Eagle “<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AK8s3iqL99c">Great Jeans</a>” commercial could also exist as the sexed-up bombshell from the Novig ad? Or that our acceptable vision for women — despite our ongoing yo-yo diet of obese Sports Illustrated Swimsuit models and red carpet Wegovy waifs — remains unwaveringly narrow, despite the current “positivity” thing?
If the issue comes down to her come-hither poses with various sports balls, how dare Sydney Sweeney reel in participants by appealing to the basest concupiscence of the prediction market! But heck-to-the-no if she thinks she’s getting away with trivializing women in sports. Perhaps we should all be like the European Broadcasting Union <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/the-strange-new-rules-for-womens-sports-coverage">banning</a> “sexualized” camera angles on female athletes. Still, isn’t it sexist to assume that women who literally spend every waking minute perfecting their bodies so they function at an elite level wouldn’t want to be seen on the world stage? You know what? Maybe we shouldn’t show women on TV at all. Just men! Solved. 
I’m no expert. I’m just a woman who works out, who was once a girl who loved high school soccer and watching my sister crush NCAA D1 gymnastics at Penn State. But I have another theory about the hot mess Syd Sweeney backlash. In our misguided cultural effort to forward the movement our athletic ancestors so graciously handed to us on a silver platter — Title IX — we women destroy ourselves by obsessing over who counts as women in women’s sports. The current scorecard:
She/her = yes. But not too much of her actual body, her politics, or her voice. 
He/him = yes. If he identifies as she. Full stop. The world is his/her oyster.
We’ll pass out holding our breath waiting for the outrage mob to catch on to the fact that not all biological sexes should be welcome in women’s sports. What about all that blood, that sweat, and those tears we’re supposedly aiming at Sydney Sweeney? The same contingent screaming their guts out about a pretty girl doing sports wrong seems totally fine with a man doing whatever he wants all over the equal playing field. 
Listen, before anyone gets their knickers in a twist, it’s perfectly fine to support women’s sports without condoning commercialized debauchery — or even gambling in the first place. Yes, Sweeney’s ad is meant to be tantalizing. But it’s not about women’s sports. And I’d argue it’s not really about women, either. There’s a larger conversation to be had around who gets to step into the arena and represent women. And it ain’t about Sydney Sweeney.
As most of the internet swims around in a memory hole of mid-2000s Carl’s Jr. campaigns and comes to terms with the Sadie Sink <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=We_VjVJ7_cs">Calvin Klein</a> ad that — while bursting with euphemism — didn’t quite achieve the same “brand awareness” that Syd’s did, I’m holding out hope that women can find a way to support each other. Aimed at the right target, this kind of outrage machine could actually make a difference in protecting women’s sports for girls and women. Yes, even those who look like Sydney Sweeney.

Actress Sydney Sweeney hasn&#8217;t explicitly commented on the backlash she received for a nude photo campaign she did for sports betting app Novig, but she did make her opinion on it clear. 
After being blasted by female athletes for the highly risqué ad, Sweeney posted photos from ESPN’s “Body Issue” on her social media. The annual ESPN special edition issue that ran until 2019 shows male and female athletes posing nude or semi-nude, yet it has never resulted in an outrage campaign from female athletes like the one currently being directed at Sweeney.
Sweeney&#8217;s apparent clapback comes after she was ripped by female athletes who disagree with the actress&#8217;s decision to pose nude with sports equipment.
“Just absolute utter disbelief, incredibly disappointing, like, how far you can put women’s sports backwards in the space of a 42-second commercial,” Australian surfer Felicity Palmateer <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2026/09/14/sport/sydney-sweeney-ad-backlash-scli-intl">told</a> CNN in an interview Monday. She said the campaign is “very damaging, especially for young females getting into sport, for females in sport, for females in general, just hypersexualized content.”
“We want to be valued for what we can do, not what we look like,” she went on.
Olympic swimmer Ariarne Titmus also weighed in, writing in response to photos shared on Instagram, “I can’t describe how infuriated I feel when I watch this.”
“Not only is this a kick in the face to every woman who has dedicated her life to perfecting her craft, but every woman who enjoys sports for what it really is — teamwork, friendship, dedication, excellence, unity … the list goes on,” she said.
Retired U.S. gymnast Gracie Kramer called the ad campaign “infuriating.”
“I’ve spent my entire life competing in a sport where female athletes have been oversexualized, reduced to our bodies, and forced to fight to be taken seriously for what we can actually do,” the athlete shared on Instagram stories, saying the ad “feels like a massive step backward.”
Boxer Skye Nicolson agreed, saying the campaign made a “mockery” of female athletes. 
“There’s a big difference between looking ‘sexy’ because you do sport compared to use sex to sell ‘sport’,” she wrote in an Instagram story. “There is nothing wrong with looking good and doing sport and there’s nothing wrong with embracing your femininity while also being a badass athlete.”
Some commentators and social media users blasted the female athletes who condemned Sweeney. The commentators highlighted how many female athletes have posed nude for the ESPN magazine and pointed out that Sweeney was posing for a sports betting app with a primarily male demographic. &#8220;Sex sells&#8221; was the prevailing sentiment from many people, who also argued that women should actually be furious over men trying to invade their sports, not sexy ad campaigns.
&#8220;Was it necessary? No,&#8221; Daily Wire opinion writer Chloe Trapanotto said in a <a href="https://x.com/ItsAllPoliticss/status/2099586313326358678">video</a>. &#8220;Should children see it? Definitely not. But you know, 30% of men under 30 are watching porn every single day, and a marketer is gonna market, and sex always sells, and it is a sport betting app, and they&#8217;re appealing to men.&#8221;
&#8220;Where have y&#8217;all been the last few months?&#8221; she added. &#8220;I&#8217;ve literally had to rename the WNBA to the question mark NBA because that national female sport league can&#8217;t define what a woman even is. I mean, to me, the biggest slap in the face is that that league is deriding female athletes for saying the entirely accurate thing that men do not belong in women&#8217;s sports.&#8221;
&#8220;The same Ariarne Titmus that danced around the issue of &#8216;Lia Thomas&#8217; and doesn&#8217;t denounce trans men from swimming in women&#8217;s sports? Yeah, speaks volumes about her character and what actually sets women back,&#8221; another person <a href="https://x.com/SanderVagabond/status/2099800655812808946">agreed</a>.
&#8220;She is choosing to do it so how is it objectifying women [any] more than those who flaunt their bodies on onlyfans or pornhub? Sounds like hypocrites to me,&#8221; <a href="https://x.com/The95408134/status/2099659982866415740">echoed</a> another person.

Fans pointed to Sydney Sweeney, noticing the difference between her and another actress’s performance. By stifling these abilities, Botox and other treatments make actors&#8217; performances less moving. Unfortunately, <a href="https://www.buzzfeed.com/kristenharris1/celebs-pressured-to-get-cosmetic-surgery">not all of these actors want these cosmetic surgeries</a>; some are ironically forced into them for the sake of their careers.
Hollywood’s immovable faces reveal its fear of “ugly.” Actors and actresses seem to believe that if their faces make one exaggerated or unattractive expression, audiences will despise them. They fear failing to meet today&#8217;s unachievable standards by maintaining a face that makes expressions that require wrinkles and lines. Even characters who are meant to be ugly — or at least not show-stopping — are played by actors with “perfect” modern features, such as <a href="https://www.bbc.com/culture/article/20240925-wuthering-heights-hollywoods-worst-casting-decisions">Margo Robbie</a> in &#8220;<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/hollywood-promised-a-love-story-what-it-delivered-was-something-else">Wuthering Heights</a>.&#8221;
These actors may have perfect aesthetics, with features designed based on what is most attractive by today’s standards. But there is something lost through the procedures. These cosmetic surgeries, through removing the full range of facial expressions, strip away movies’ essential ability to connect with audiences and characters&#8217; ability to move them. If actors continue to prioritize “perfect beauty” over real faces, they will sacrifice the rawness and realism necessary for a good story.
Botox, fillers, and other cosmetic surgeries have had a dramatic effect on cinema. It&#8217;s as if Hollywood wanted to distance itself further from its viewers by making its characters not only stiff-faced but disconnected from the average audience. Movies are supposed to present stories designed to inspire and stir the viewer; the best films call people to a higher standard and morality. But how can a film be expected to move an audience if its characters can&#8217;t connect with people on a basic human level?
Julie Andrews&#8217;s Oscar-nominated role in the 1965 film &#8220;The Sound of Music&#8221; exemplifies how true emotions should look on screen. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U9v85Bc1fR0">When Andrews&#8217; character</a>, Maria, argues with Captain von Trapp, you can see the creases between her brows. Mute the sound, and the subtle differentiations in her expressions become pronounced: concern becomes frustration, which then turns into exasperation and pleading, and finally into hurt.
The best actors&#8217; emotions are etched into every wrinkle and line on their faces; that is how emotion touches us. Good performances show us how Hollywood is terrified of the truth: people are imperfect. We do not possess flawless, un-aging faces; we grow old, wrinkle, and decay. And that makes great cinema.

Sydney Sweeney posted a snarky reply to her critics on Instagram on Sunday. 
“It’s called … acting,” the 28-year-old actress <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/DZAgyfuES3r/?img_index=20">wrote</a> in the caption alongside a carousel of behind-the-scenes snapshots from the HBO drama series “Euphoria.” The most recent season was just announced to be the end of the show. It has also been the most controversial.
The season 3 finale, “In God We Trust,” was actually the series finale, series creator and director Sam Levinson confirmed on the podcast “Popcast.” Levinson had hinted at it before the season 3 premiere, saying he writes “every season like it’s the last.”

He also didn’t commit to doing a fourth season, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2026/04/08/arts/television/sam-levinson-euphoria-season-3.html">telling</a> The New York Times in April, “I don’t know. As of right now, all I want to do is hang out with my wife and kids and read some Elmore Leonard and watch ‘Mrs. Miniver’ again.” 
The official “Euphoria” description says it’s about “a group of high school students as they navigate drugs, sex, identity, trauma, social media, love and friendship.” The story skips forward in time for the third season as the characters “wrestle with the virtue of faith, the possibility of redemption and the problem of evil.”
One major controversy for season 3 has been the storyline involving Sweeney’s character, Cassie, creating an OnlyFans to help fund her upcoming wedding. She acts out strange fetishes, including dressing as a dog on a leash and a baby in a diaper, plus sends one fan her underwear. These antics drew the ire of sex workers, who say it makes them all look bad.
“In the climate we’re in, that they dressed her up as a baby to make pornographic OnlyFans content was beyond troubling and again serves to perpetuate stereotypes that sex workers have no moral compass and that they will do anything for money,” former “Boy Meets World” actress Maitland Ward told Variety last month. “And there’s always this untrue stigma that somehow sex work is synonymous with sex trafficking and abuse. And they just said, let’s make a joke of it. That is so funny. I’m not laughing.”

Several prominent “content creators,” including former “Boy Meets World” actress Maitland Ward and popular OnlyFans personality Sydney Leathers have publicly slammed Sydney Sweeney for her character Cassie’s storyline on the HBO series. 
In this season, Cassie creates an OnlyFans to help fund her upcoming wedding. She acts out strange fetishes, including dressing as a dog on a leash and a baby in a diaper, plus sends one fan her underwear. These antics have the real OnlyFans creators seeing red.
“There’s just a lot that’s ridiculous and cartoonish about it,” Leathers <a href="https://variety.com/2026/tv/news/sydney-sweeney-euphoria-onlyfans-hbo-sex-worker-nude-1236741946/">told</a> Variety in an interview published Sunday. “There’s so much that they have her doing that is not even allowed on OnlyFans, and that alone is infuriating: the age-play stuff where she’s dressed as a baby in a diaper, for example. Credit card processors have very strict rules that you have to abide by, and the rules are getting stricter all the time.”
Ward also expressed her frustration over OnlyFans creators being portrayed in a negative way.

It’s just gnarly and jarring,” Levinson continued. “We wanted to capture what she’s trying to show the audience and be inside of it, but then also pull back wider and see how depressing it is.”
In the latest episode, which aired on Sunday, Sweeney’s character weighs in on politics and appears to lean Right. During a fictional press tour, Cassie tells an online talk show host, &#8220;If a man today were to say that he wants a girlfriend who can cook or clean, he might as well be screaming the N-word.&#8221;
Someone off camera replies, &#8220;You sound like a Democrat,&#8221; which makes Cassie laugh and say, “I’m not retarded.”
At another point, Cassie says, &#8220;I just feel like American men have been treated like second-class citizens … In the past, men used to be hunters, gatherers, and protectors. Now, they’re being forced to walk around on their tippy toes. It’s not natural.&#8221; 
Her manager, Maddy, offers her take on the situation. “You know what’s funny?” she asks Cassie. “The angrier these idiots get, the more money you make.”
Many commenters pointed out how Cassie’s storyline mimics what people really think about Sweeney’s personal politics, which she refuses to confirm. Last summer, all hell broke loose over the campaign featuring Sweeney in various seductive poses while saying she had “good jeans.” The double entendre with the word “genes” made leftists deem the ad racist, noting that Sweeney is white with blond hair and blue eyes.
In one of the ads, Sweeney says, “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality, and even eye color. My jeans are blue.”
American Eagle responded to the backlash at the time with a statement defending the campaign.

American Eagle’s chief marketing officer, Craig Brommers, <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/entertainment/celebrities/2026/04/15/sydney-sweeney-american-eagle-ad-jeans-controversy-new/89605439007/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> USA Today that the company’s stock jumped by 22% thanks to that campaign.
&#8220;A vast, vast, vast majority of Americans understood that the campaign was about jeans,&#8221; Brommers told the outlet, crediting Sweeney’s “duality” of being both casual and glamorous as the reason for the campaign&#8217;s success.
&#8220;American Eagle has a store in all 50 states and during that campaign, we saw new customer acquisition grow in every single county in America,&#8221; he added. &#8220;It is a fact that it was the most successful campaign in the history of the American Eagle brand.&#8221; 
&#8220;The world is curious and the world will be talking when we launch the campaign,&#8221; Brommers said. &#8220;As we learned in the fall campaign, there is noise, but there are also facts as well, and we&#8217;re excited to see where this campaign takes our brand.&#8221;

Mostly, the 28-year-old star just expressed confusion about why everyone was up in arms over the ad campaign.

Topline: With the shutdown finally ended, the fight between Democrats and Republicans over healthcare subsidies and the fate of Obamacare is only ramping up.
Obamacare subsidies were expanded in 2021 during the COVID pandemic. The subsidies, which are technically tax credits, were supposed to last only 2 years, but Democrats extended them through the end of this year.
Currently, about 24 million Americans are on Obamacare plans, up from 11 million at the start of the pandemic. It’s a considerable increase, mainly due to subsidies. It’s <a href="https://www.brookings.edu/articles/how-would-eliminating-0-marketplace-premiums-affect-insurance-coverage/?utm_source=chatgpt.com">estimated</a> that about 42% of 2025 Affordable Care Act (ACA) enrollees pay less than $10 a month, with a vast majority paying nothing at all. Notably, Democrats removed the income cap on subsidy eligibility, so people earning over 400% of the federal poverty level qualify for these subsidies, too.
The cost: The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) says that extending the subsidies through 2035 would increase the federal deficit by about $358 billion.
Democrats’ message: Democrats reportedly want to make the midterms about healthcare. Their message is that inaction from Republicans will drive up healthcare costs for millions of Americans.
Morning Wire spoke to Ryan Long, a Senior Research Fellow at Paragon Health Institute, to explain all of this. He said that if these subsidies expire as scheduled, people on ACA plans will once again return to paying something, even if it’s just a small amount, instead of having access to $0 plans. Those $0 plans, he said, have actually led to widespread fraud and abuse.
GOP’s message: Republicans generally want the subsidies to expire when the Democrats scheduled them to expire. They argue that Obamacare is a failure and needs serious reforms or a complete overhaul. Premiums, for example, rose <a href="https://www.cms.gov/cciio/resources/forms-reports-and-other-resources/downloads/uninsured-affordability-in-marketplace.pdf">143%</a> in the first six years after the ACA took effect. Next year, premiums are set to rise another <a href="https://www.kff.org/quick-take/aca-insurers-are-raising-premiums-by-an-estimated-26-but-most-enrollees-could-see-sharper-increases-in-what-they-pay/?utm_source=chatgpt.com">26%</a>.
As for the fate of Obamacare, President Donald Trump has ramped up calls to move on from the “Obamacare madness.”

Topline: Hollywood is in a major slump, with October marking the worst box office revenues in nearly 30 years. Even Halloween weekend, usually a horror cash machine, failed to draw audiences.
With the exception of the COVID-19 shutdown year of 2020, when theaters were closed, October was the worst box-office month since 1997. Halloween weekend had the worst earnings in 31 years. The biggest culprit appears to be the lack of must-see content.
The numbers: Disney’s &#8220;Tron: Ares&#8221; opened to $38 million — the franchise’s worst debut. A24’s &#8220;The Smashing Machine&#8221; with Dwayne Johnson got $11 million. The Bruce Springsteen biopic earned $9 million. The total October take was $425 million.
The first couple of releases of November aren’t faring any better. &#8220;Christie,&#8221; starring Sydney Sweeney, came out last week and was a major flop. Some are suggesting politics played a role, but given Sweeney’s popularity, that isn’t very likely. The most probable explanation is that Sweeney’s young male fan base wasn’t especially interested in seeing her look nothing like herself playing a boxer.
Expert says: Veteran Comscore analyst Paul Dergarabedian <a href="https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=1489424842344237">told</a> finance outlet, Cheddar News, that a couple of Japanese anime movies outperformed expectations, and without them, the story here would be even worse.
“There was just nothing commercially exciting enough to mainstream audiences to drive them in huge numbers. And you know, last year, there was a Venom movie that opened at $50 million in October. We didn&#8217;t have that this year. And so I think that definitely hurt the box office,” said Dergarabedian.
The deeper issues: The ongoing disruption of streaming and social media is always at play, but not necessarily in the way typically thought. Many veteran filmmakers are starting to talk about the problem of what gets greenlit — they say studios are playing it safe and aren’t willing to gamble on creative, out-of-the-box ideas, so audiences are getting tired of seeing the same old thing.
Directors like Michael Bay and James Cameron are warning that something bigger may be broken. In an interview a few months ago, Bay voiced frustration over what he called “a system afraid of risk.” Now, he’s the king of big-studio blockbusters, but he said he’s moving into independent filmmaking so he can be more creative.
And he said that Cameron told him that no individual executives are empowered to greenlight anything anymore. The result is too many sequels, too few original ideas, and a growing reliance on algorithms to decide what gets made.

Topline: The Trump administration is <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/feds-crack-down-on-minority-contracting-schemes-d-c-s-worst-kept-secret">turning</a> its eye on a long-running DEI program that may be one of Washington’s most corrupt. The federal government awards a percentage of contracts to companies whose owners are “socially disadvantaged.” But they might not even be the ones doing the work. 
At issue is a process known as 8(a) contracting or “set-aside” contracting, where certain contracts, which could be for tens of millions of dollars, are either given to one company with no competition, or limited so that only “disadvantaged” companies are eligible to compete – essentially, racial minorities and women-owned companies.
This way of contracting is likely behind much of the poor performance in government, such as websites seeming old-fashioned and broken. But this has been the way Washington works for decades. Typically, GOP-favored interest groups such as disabled veterans and Alaskan native corporations have gotten a share. And then big, non-minority-owned companies end up doing much of the actual work as subcontractors.
ATI: One company, ATI Government Solutions, seemed to admit to the cozy dealmaking in an <a href="https://x.com/JamesOKeefeIII/status/1981042870460252398">expose</a> put out by undercover activist James O’Keefe last month.
ATI is a company that gets contracts because it’s owned by Native Americans, though on ATI’s website, all the executives listed appear to be white.
The website is almost entirely focused on selling the idea that it’s easier for government officials to skip holding a competition to find the best company for a job. Meanwhile, big companies can get a shortcut to a government contract by working with ATI, which essentially has an automatic in because it’s partly owned by an Indian tribe.
Seems sus: Kelly Loeffler, the head of the Small Business Administration, said there’s a “full review of the 8(a) program” underway that has found “institutionalized abuse” to the tune of billions.
Loeffler said ATI’s CEO, Firmadge Crutchfield, had a network of seven companies, all of which had been suspended from receiving new contracts, and that their names were provided to law enforcement. 
Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA), chair of the Senate Small Business Committee, said the Biden administration tripled the goal for minority set-asides from 5% to 15%, and did little to make sure they were actually doing the work, instead of serving as pass-throughs. 
“Small business contracting programs were never intended to function as welfare systems for favored classes or give no-bid contracts to do-nothing companies,” Ernst said, adding that over the decades, “penalties against rulebreakers have not been swiftly and resolutely imposed.”

Actress Ruby Rose, who was allegedly passed over for the lead role in the boxing biopic “Christy,” came out swinging with a derogatory social media post against Sydney Sweeney.
The sports drama about competitive boxer Christy Martin was a massive flop at the box office, earning just $1.3 million from 2,011 theaters.
“The original Christy Martin script was incredible. Life changing. I was attached to play Cherry,” Rose <a href="https://www.threads.com/@rubyrose/post/DQ5-UJnDSE7">posted</a> on Threads. 
“Everyone had experience with the core material. Most of us were actually gay. It’s part of why I stayed in acting. Losing roles happens all the time,” the “Orange is the New Black” star went on. 
“For her PR to talk about it flopping and saying SS did it for the ‘people’. None of ‘the people’ want to see someone who hates them, parading around pretending to be us. You’re a cretin and you ruined the film. Period. Christy deserved better.”
Rose was referencing comments Sweeney made following the film’s lackluster opening weekend. The actress defended the film being a flop, saying she was still “proud” of her work and insisting that art films didn’t need to make a lot of money.
“[T]hank you to everyone who saw, felt, and believed and will believe in this story for years to come. if Christy gave even one woman the courage to take her first step toward safety, then we will have succeeded,” Sweeney <a href="https://www.instagram.com/sydney_sweeney/p/DQ4OYqPEeN1/">wrote</a> on Instagram Monday.

A clip from Sydney Sweeney’s interview with GQ has gone viral on social media, with most viewers applauding her refusal to take the virtue signaling bait.
In the clip, interviewer Kat Stoeffel scrunched up her face and pressed Sweeney on her viral American Eagle ad campaign. Stoeffel tried a variety of different tactics to get the actress to apologize and denounce white supremacy. Commenters praised Sweeney for remaining cool and collected.

“GQ Reporter: why aren’t you ashamed that people will think you’re a conservative? You should be. Sydney Sweeney: Next question,” Jennifer Sey, founder of XX-XY Athletics <a href="https://x.com/jennifersey/status/1986556246627897714?s=43">wrote</a>. 
“To me, the most interesting aspect of this conversation is the smug progressive woman who lives in a bubble and says stupid stuff because it seems to her like the most natural thing in the world,” Dinesh D’Souza <a href="https://x.com/dineshdsouza/status/1986563463695515781?s=43">shared</a>. “I’m sure she’s still wondering why Sydney Sweeney didn’t go along.”
Another commenter pointed out that liberals don’t expect conservatives to be real people, but instead assume they are just caricatures as the media portrays them.
“The thing you have to remember about this woman and those like her is that she genuinely doesn’t know that anyone disagrees with her basic worldview. She doesn’t even see it as a worldview. It’s just the obvious truth,” Hunter Ash on X <a href="https://x.com/artemisconsort/status/1986551356673687697?s=43">observed</a>.
“Of course she knows abstractly that half the country voted for Trump. But those aren’t people. Those are cartoon characters. They’re either fat slobbering rednecks in klan hoods, or mustache-twirling robber barons manipulating the rednecks for profit,” Ash continued. “Anyone she might actually sit down and talk to is, of course, a person, and therefore agrees with The Obvious Truth. It is inconceivable to her that anyone capable of being a pleasant dinner party guest would not share her basic beliefs and values.”
The commenter argued that the question wasn’t meant to be a “gotcha” but rather came from the interviewer assuming that Sweeney “got mixed up in the whole jeans/genes fiasco by mistake.”
At another point in the interview, the actress was asked what it was like when President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance weighed in on the campaign. Sweeney gave a one-word answer: “Surreal.”
Controversy erupted over the summer over an ad spot featuring Sweeney in various seductive poses while saying she had “good jeans.” The double entendre with the word “genes” made leftists deem the ad racist, noting that Sweeney is white with blond hair and blue eyes.
In one of the ads, Sweeney says, “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality, and even eye color. My jeans are blue.”
American Eagle responded to the backlash by issuing a simple statement: “&#8217;Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans&#8217; is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story. We’ll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way. Great jeans look good on everyone.”
