<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/podcasts/morning-wire" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Daniel Perry</a>, a former Army Sergeant who was granted a full pardon by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, is speaking out for the first time since he fatally shot an armed BLM protester during the summer of 2020.
In an exclusive interview with The Daily Wire, Perry details what happened that fateful night and explains some of the controversies of the case, including the shocking actions of <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/05/11/us-news/crime-victims-target-woke-soros-das-in-california-texas/">George Soros-funded</a> District Attorney Jose Garza, whom Perry says is victimizing others in Austin.
For the uninitiated, Perry, then 30 years old, was stationed with the U.S. Army outside of Austin, Texas, in 2020, and was working as an Uber driver as a side hustle. On July 25, after dropping off a passenger, he found himself in the midst of a Black Lives Matter protest, where at least two protesters were armed. Perry ended up fatally shooting Garrett Foster, 28, who approached Perry’s car window while open-carrying a loaded AK-47. Both Foster and Perry are white and military veterans.
Perry was later charged with murder by Garza. Perry was convicted of murder in April of 2023, and a year later, in May of 2024, Gov. Abbott issued a full pardon to Perry and called out Garza for politically motivated actions.
Recalling the night of the incident, Perry told The Daily Wire that he had no intention of ending up near a BLM protest, and when he realized he was approaching a crowd of people, he stopped his vehicle.
“A guy jumped in front of my vehicle so I couldn&#8217;t drive any further and somebody threw a water bottle,” Perry said. “That&#8217;s when I honked my horn.”
“They start rocking and shaking my car and banging on it with their fists and kicking it,” he continued. “And the guy approached me with an AK-47 and he motioned [for] me to roll my windows. And at this point in time, I&#8217;m kind of in a state of shock and I complied with him – I don&#8217;t know why I complied with him … I rolled my windows down.”

The man, later identified as Foster, said something to Perry that was “completely muffled.”
“I had no idea what he was saying, and then he takes two steps back and he points – starts raising the barrel of his AK-47 at me. And my body reacted on its own. I grabbed my revolver and I shot him.”
Perry said he sped away to try to get to safety and heard gunshots going off behind him. There was a second shooter in the crowd, but Perry thought he had missed Foster and believed Foster was now trying to kill him.
The second shooter left three bullet holes in Perry’s vehicle and has since been identified by authorities, who have determined that the person acted criminally. However, Perry said the DA’s office has refused to prosecute the shooter – another suspect decision from Garza.
“I honestly thought I wasn’t going to make it out of there alive,” Perry said. “A thought that went through me was that I hadn&#8217;t been the most right, righteous Jew in the world, and that I wouldn’t see my parents again and make amends for not talking to them as much as I should.”
Perry said that following the incident, he was seeking help to cope with the trauma he experienced and was trying to move on with his life. He never thought he would be charged with murder, since he said he clearly acted in self-defense.
But all that changed.
Perry started to receive death threats over the incident and said the U.S. Army stationed him in Alaska to protect his safety. At the same time, Perry said Garza was campaigning for District Attorney on a platform that included getting “justice” for Foster.
As Perry feared, Garza was elected and secured an indictment against him. At the time, Perry’s defense <a href="https://www.kvue.com/article/news/local/us-army-sergeant-indicted-on-murder-charge-in-austin-protester-garrett-fosters-death/269-ba224d9e-d40c-48b9-b728-e26234a76c74">said</a> that the indictment was politically motivated and “unusual,” since they were unable to present a written presentation to the Grand Jury.
“Honestly, I felt like the justice system was going to work in my favor because I believe I did nothing wrong,” Perry described his feelings heading into the trial. “But at the back of my mind, I believed that the DA was going to tip the scales and put me at a slight disadvantage.”
The trial was controversial. For example, one of the jurors printed outside research and presented it to fellow jurors. The defense sought a new trial over the issue, but the judge agreed with prosecution that such action from the juror was okay.
In another controversy, the lead investigator on the case, David Fugitt, testified that Garza’s office tampered with him as a witness. Fugitt said he was ordered to remove almost all exculpatory evidence that would have helped Perry.

“I had no idea that the jury instruction was going to be as complicated as they were going to be,” Perry said. “And I had no idea that there was a jury member bringing in outside information to the trial to use it to change the mind of the other members of the jury. I also had no idea about the witness tampering. [The DA’s office] also did not allow the police support in my trial, and they did not allow the lead detective to give his professional opinion about my case.”
Perry was convicted on April 8, 2023, for the murder of Foster, and was later sentenced to 25 years behind bars.
“I felt like I was betrayed by the American people, even though that&#8217;s not really true,” Perry told The Daily Wire. “It was just the city of Austin.”
“My entire belief system of the justice system was destroyed, because I felt like it was weaponized against me. I felt that I was never going to see my parents again alive,” he continued. “I broke up with my fiancée, because I thought I was never going to see her again. I told her that I cannot provide her the family that she deserves, so she needed to move on and find a husband who can help her raise a family. That was the hardest thing I ever had to do.”
After Perry was convicted, Gov. Abbott announced that he would be asking the Texas Parole Board to review Perry&#8217;s case, and if a recommendation was made, he would move swiftly to give Perry a full pardon. “Texas has one of the strongest ‘Stand Your Ground’ laws of self-defense that cannot be nullified by a jury or a progressive District Attorney,” the governor <a href="https://x.com/highbrow_nobrow/status/1791209488747307192">said</a>.
Perry spent 13 months behind bars before Abbott received the go-ahead from the board to grant the full pardon. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton reacted to the pardon, saying online, “Soros-backed prosecutors like Jose Garza do not get to pick and choose the rights we have as Americans, and I am relieved that justice has prevailed.”
Perry, who is Jewish, said it was his faith in God that got him through.
“I felt that God had answered my prayers,” he said. “I don&#8217;t know many prayers by heart, but I did the Shema three times a day. And then a few days later, I found out that the governor actually said that about me and actually brought me hope. I felt like I was blessed, to be honest.”
Perry also noted how Garza and his office have taken actions against him that he feels are both politically motivated and personal. In one instance, Perry believes Garza’s office was behind the push to get him a less-than-honorable discharge from the military.
“The district attorney got involved with my discharge process to ensure that I wouldn&#8217;t get an honorable discharge,” he said. “I wish I still had a copy of my discharge packet. There was a letter with the official ‘District Attorney of Travis County’ letterhead on it stating that the government&#8217;s statements about me being innocent were just political and that I am, in fact, a convicted murderer.”
Perry’s attorney, Doug O’Connell, said that the move to discharge Perry after the conviction was “wildly premature,” noting that there was still a motion for a new trial pending and there was no formal paperwork labeling Perry as guilty, Military Times <a href="https://www.militarytimes.com/news/your-military/2023/04/26/army-to-discharge-sergeant-convicted-of-murdering-air-force-veteran/">reported</a>. Moreover, the initial police report labeled Foster’s death a “justified homicide.”
“He won the conviction,” Perry said of Garza. “He didn&#8217;t have to take the extra step to make sure that all my military benefits would be stripped away from me. My unit, they tried their hardest to make sure that I would stay in so there&#8217;s a place for me to return, but the Army legal office got involved and took it out of their hands.”
Garza also released some of Perry’s private messages after Gov. Abbott said he was looking to issue a pardon. Perry says the messages were mostly with his military buddies and were taken out of context, and believes they were released as “retaliation.”
Some of the <a href="https://www.kxan.com/news/crime/daniel-perry-document-dozens-of-messages-about-guns-killing-protesters/">private messages</a> discussed guns and shooting protesters if they were to attack him, and other messages were racial in nature and offensive. The messages soon became the prevailing narrative around the case.
At the time, Perry’s defense <a href="https://www.kxan.com/news/crime/daniel-perry-document-dozens-of-messages-about-guns-killing-protesters/">issued</a> statements from two black males, Sgt. Traveon Napper and former Army member Ronald Wilson, who defended Perry.
“I can confidently say that Daniel Perry is not a racist. I have known Daniel for over five years as a colleague and a friend. I have known him to be nothing but a professional, hard-working soldier whose statements are being taken out of context. I know Daniel Perry would take a bullet for me,” Sgt. Napper said.
Wilson said in a statement, “While in the Army, I witnessed Daniel interact with people of many different races and he treated everyone the same. Anyone who knows Daniel will tell you that he’s the definition of the Army values: loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity and personal courage. I know Daniel would do anything for me and I would do anything for him.”
Perry told The Daily Wire that there were racial memes sent and received to and from his black military buddies, and emphasized how guys in the military like offensive humor.
“We don&#8217;t see race in the military,” Perry said. “We see something funny – doesn&#8217;t matter how bad it is, we share it with each other. If you were ever able to sit in a room full of active duty soldiers, and you hear the conversations they have when they&#8217;re bored, a lot of people will be offended. It&#8217;s like for other soldiers or veterans, we like dirty jokes in the military. We like offensive jokes in the military.”
Perry also said he shouldn&#8217;t have “advocated for violence” in private messages about riots, but said he believes that violence is necessary for self-defense and to protect your family.
The 37-year-old has not spoken to any media about the incident or the pardon, until now. Perry said he’s only speaking to The Daily Wire because he thinks Garza is unjustly prosecuting others for political reasons, specifically police officers. Notably, Garza has indicted more than 20 Austin police officers for their actions during the violent 2020 BLM riots.
“I am completely terrified and I&#8217;m worried that they might retaliate, just because I&#8217;m talking to you guys,” Perry said. “But if nobody speaks up against the injustice that he&#8217;s bringing, nobody&#8217;s going to hear my story and more officers and more law-abiding citizens will face his wrath. I’m not his only victim.”
Perry specifically brought up the prosecution of Austin police <a href="https://cbsaustin.com/news/local/austin-police-officer-whose-murder-trial-ended-in-a-hung-jury-will-not-face-new-charges">officer Christopher Taylor</a>. “He got three hung [grand] juries and then they didn&#8217;t indict him a fourth time, so they decided to pursue another shooting he was involved in that happened a year prior with an armed man who was armed with a knife,” Perry said.
Taylor’s defense attorney said online that he&#8217;s never seen a more “clear cut self defense case involving an officer,” and <a href="https://www.fox7austin.com/news/christopher-taylor-deadly-conduct-trial-guilty-verdict">posted</a> during jury deliberations, “The jury must be improperly considering the other-unproven allegations made by this same anti-police DA.&#8221;
Perry is still facing one misdemeanor charge &#8212; a <a href="https://www.fox7austin.com/news/daniel-perry-misdemeanor-deadly-conduct-charge-austin-texas">deadly conduct charge</a> punishable by up to one year behind bars &#8212; in connection to Foster’s death. He closed the interview by telling The Daily Wire that he feels like he has nothing to lose by speaking out about Garza.
“My reputation is already ruined. My career is already ruined. The only thing they could take away from me is, maximum, some jail time,” Perry said. “But I don&#8217;t see they could take any more away from me.”
Perry’s next hearing is set for December.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) ordered law enforcement officials in his state to target and arrest criminals who were carrying out influence operations at the behest of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) or the Chinese government.
Abbott issued the executive order to protect Texans from coordinated harassment and coercion campaigns from China that are aimed at Chinese dissidents and seek to force them to return to China.
&#8220;The Chinese Communist Party has engaged in a worldwide harassment campaign against Chinese dissidents in attempts to forcibly return them to China,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Texas will not tolerate the harassment or coercion of the more than 250,000 individuals of Chinese descent who legally call Texas home by the Chinese Communist Party or its heinous proxies.&#8221;
&#8220;Ensuring the safety, welfare, and well-being of Texans is a top priority,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;I directed the Texas Department of Public Safety to identify and bring criminal charges against individuals who harass Texans on behalf of this hostile foreign adversary. We will continue to do everything we can to protect Texans from the unlawful and repressive actions of the Chinese Communist Party.&#8221;
Abbott ordered the Texas Department of Safety to work with federal law enforcement to identify and charge individuals working for foreign governments who are suspected of being involved in crimes targeting dissidents.
The order also initiates the creation of policy recommendations from officials on how to counter threats posed by foreign harassment campaigns.
Abbott also ordered the creation of a new hotline to report suspected acts of repression or coercion by foreign actors.

There was a massive red wave last Tuesday night across the nation, and Texas was no exception. 
Texas Governor Greg Abbott took to <a href="https://x.com/GregAbbott_TX/status/1854328594245312722" target="_blank" rel="noopener">X last week,</a> once again making his commitment to education freedom known: “Parents know their kids better than anyone, &amp; they want to put them on the best path to success.” He <a href="https://x.com/GregAbbott_TX/status/1854328594245312722" target="_blank" rel="noopener">continued</a>, “With last night’s election results, we can provide school choice for every Texan.” 
Less than 90 minutes later, the governor <a href="https://x.com/GregAbbott_TX/status/1854350583047802994" target="_blank" rel="noopener">posted</a> a pledge, “Texas will deliver school choice.”

Texas, known for freedom, has been an outlier among historically conservative states when it comes to the rights of dads and moms to have education options for their children outside of the public school system. This is despite only <a href="https://edchoice.morningconsultintelligence.com/texas/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">37%</a> of Texans thinking K-12 education in the local school district within Texas is headed in the right direction. 
Abbott’s commitment to empowering parents with education options is nothing new. He has advocated for school choice in the Lone Star State <a href="https://gov.texas.gov/news/post/advocates_praise_governor_abbotts_call_for_expanded_school_choice" target="_blank" rel="noopener">since 2017</a>. 
During the Texas fourth legislative special session in November 2023, the school choice effort died by an amendment to House Bill 1, which removed a school choice provision from the education spending bill by a House vote of <a href="https://www.texastribune.org/2024/05/28/texas-primary-runoff-school-vouchers-abbott/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">84-63</a>. The 21-point defeat resulted from 21 Republican representatives from rural areas in the state voting with Democrats against school choice.
With the Texas legislative session convening only every other year, Abbott used the intervening time effectively to campaign to get those anti-school choice Republican representatives out of office and, in turn, elect pro-education freedom candidates.
The Texas primary election in March was successful to this end, as six Republican representatives who voted against school choice lost their seats. The March <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/texas/news/texas-houses-shift-to-the-right-expected-to-cause-contention-at-state-capitol/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">run-off election</a> resulted in another three Republican anti-school choice representatives getting voted out of office. 
Added to those numbers were <a href="https://www.discovery.org/education/2024/06/05/greg-abbott-went-to-war-for-school-choice-he-appears-to-have-won/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">five others</a> who forwent seeking reelection, knowing a reckoning was coming. Each of those representatives was replaced by a pro-education freedom candidate. A total of 14 seats were flipped from anti-school choice Republican representatives to education freedom champions. That 14-seat pick-up translates into a 28-point positive swing for school choice — giving Abbott the numbers needed in the Texas House to pass a sweeping school choice bill for families. The Texas Senate had not been the barrier.
The November 5 general election results are still coming in, but it has been <a href="https://www.texastribune.org/2024/11/05/adam-hinojosa-morgan-lamantia-texas-senate-rio-grande-valley/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> that Republicans have flipped one Texas Senate seat, resulting in a <a href="https://apps.texastribune.org/features/2024/texas-2024-general-election-results/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">20-11</a> Republican majority. The victorious Republican candidate Adam Hinojosa, referred to by the <a href="https://x.com/SchoolChoiceNow/status/1854161544239632650" target="_blank" rel="noopener">American Federation of Children</a> as a “school choice champion,” is the <a href="https://www.texastribune.org/2024/11/05/adam-hinojosa-morgan-lamantia-texas-senate-rio-grande-valley/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">first Republican</a> to win the Rio Grande Valley since Reconstruction. 
In the Texas House, similar results are still being reported, but it is currently anticipated that Republicans will flip two seats, making their majority <a href="https://apps.texastribune.org/features/2024/texas-2024-general-election-results/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">88-62</a>. It’s no surprise that Abbott is confident this time around — not just that it’s possible to enact education freedom in Texas, but it is probable with the new legislators. 
As of 2023, of the <a href="https://nces.ed.gov/programs/digest/d13/tables/dt13_203.20.asp" target="_blank" rel="noopener">52.1</a> million K-12 public school students in the United States, nearly <a href="https://nces.ed.gov/programs/digest/d13/tables/dt13_203.20.asp" target="_blank" rel="noopener">5.7 million</a> lived in Texas. That translates to 11.88% of all students nationwide. Should Texas pass a universal school choice bill, that would increase the total number of public school students with school choice access in America from <a href="https://www.discovery.org/education/2024/10/03/historic-education-freedom-is-happening-and-it-is-worthy-of-a-celebration/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">18.9 million</a> to 24.6 million — from <a href="https://www.edchoice.org/engage/educational-freedom-and-choice-hits-escape-velocity-end-of-session-wrap/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">36.3%</a> to 47.21%. 
The benefits of education freedom are significant for each individual child, their family, and community. Additionally, widespread school choice programs <a href="https://thefederalist.com/2024/10/22/the-school-choice-programs-democrats-hate-have-saved-taxpayers-up-to-45-billion/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">save a state enormous sums of money</a> because the funding provided to the family to take to an alternative education option is generally only one-third to half the amount public education spends per student. 
As Martin F. Lueken <a href="https://www.wsj.com/opinion/school-choice-saves-taxpayer-dollars-education-policy-c4b32b6b?page=1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote</a> in The Wall Street Journal, “a recent EdChoice <a href="https://www.wsj.com/public/resources/documents/EdChoiceOct2024.pdf?mod=article_inline" target="_blank" rel="noopener">analysis</a> of 48 school-choice programs across 26 states through 2022 estimates that school-choice programs generated cumulative net fiscal benefits for taxpayers worth between $19.4 billion and $45.6 billion.” That number is dramatically on the rise because, since that time, ten states have joined West Virginia and Arizona in signing universal or near-universal school choice into law. 
With the current K-12 public education spending on Texas students topping <a href="https://www.edchoice.org/state_fast_facts/texas/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$70.6 billion</a> annually, massive savings will result in the years to come. Therefore, empowering parents with education freedom for their children is not only the right thing to do but also has positive fiscal benefits for the state’s bottom line. For Texas, that will be billions of dollars saved each year once Abbott’s persistent leadership in delivering school choice is across the finish line. 
The great news for Texas families is that the reality of education freedom could be merely months away.

Governor <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/greg-abbott" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Greg Abbott</a> (R) formally declared the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua a &#8220;foreign terrorist organization&#8221; at a press conference on Monday, a move that comes after more than 100 members of the gang violently forced their way across the border earlier this year.
Tren de Aragua has repeatedly made headlines this year after allegations that gang members took over an <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/09/15/us-news/denver-suburbs-look-to-sue-over-over-sanctuary-city-policies-that-welcomed-migrants/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">apartment</a> complex in Aurora, Colorado, as well as a historic <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/texas-hotel-with-alleged-venezuelan-gang-activity-ordered-temporarily-shut-down" target="_blank" rel="noopener">hotel</a> in downtown El Paso.
The gang is known for violent illegal activities including murder, smuggling drugs and people, and extortion, according to authorities.

“The recent entry and expansion of the vicious Venezuelan gang, Tren de Aragua, is a dangerous and deadly problem facing our state and nation,” Abbott said.
The governor also announced a statewide operation to aggressively target the Venezuelan gang.
Texas&#8217; plan would involve a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years for Tren de Aragua members who smuggle people into Texas. The plan would also create a database to track gang members.

&#8220;Our goal is to defend Texas from the growing threat of the gang. We will not let them use Texas as a base of operations to terrorize our citizens. They have a target on their back, and we are going after them. Texas is the wrong state for them to try to do business in,&#8221; the governor said.
The governor also revealed that back in March, more than 100 suspected gang members were part of the group that violently forced their way across the border.
“Earlier this year, more than 100 suspected TdA members were arrested after the riots at the El Paso border, when immigrants assaulted the Texas National Guard,&#8221; Abbott said.
During the chaos, which was <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/09/16/us-news/suspected-tren-de-aragua-gangbangers-were-part-of-the-migrant-group-that-rushed-the-border/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">caught</a> on video, hundreds of migrants pushed past razor wire barriers, knocking border troops in the process, with one migrant even stomping on a National Guard member&#8217;s knee.
Hundreds of those migrants had the charges against them dismissed, and dozens were allowed to go free.
Since then, members of Tren de Aragua have popped up all over the country, including allegedly robbing jewelry stores in Colorado and shooting two cops in New York.
The migrant <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/06/04/us-news/accused-cop-shooting-nyc-migrant-is-suspected-member-of-bloodthirsty-tren-de-aragua-gang-sources/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">accused</a> of shooting two NYPD officers in Queens entered the country illegally last year, had his asylum case dismissed by the Biden administration, and then was apparently recruited by the gang.
Former President Donald Trump has made illegal migrant criminals a major theme of his presidential campaign this election cycle. He has accused the Biden-Harris administration of allowing dangerous criminals into the U.S., including some from prisons in places like Venezuela.
Trump has promised to launch a massive deportation operation targeting criminal migrants should he be elected again in November.

A federal appeals court sided with <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/texas" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Texas</a> on Tuesday, saying that the state does not have to remove a water buoy barrier placed in the Rio Grande to deter illegal immigration.
In its <a href="https://www.ca5.uscourts.gov/opinions/pub/23/23-50632-CV1.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">decision</a>, the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the Biden administration failed to provide evidence that the barrier needed to be removed, vacating a lower court’s order. The Justice Department had filed a lawsuit against Texas accusing it of violating federal law after it placed a chain of floating buoys along a stretch of the Rio Grande near Eagle Pass. 
“Cognizant of our role as a court of review and of the reality that a preliminary injunction is an exceptional remedy, we hold that the district court clearly erred in finding that the United States will likely prove that the barrier is in a navigable stretch of the Rio Grande,” Circuit Judge Don Willett wrote. “We cannot square the district court’s findings and conclusions with over a century’s worth of precedent, which on a fair and faithful reading renders inapplicable or unpersuasive the evidence on which the district court relies.”
Willett said the lower court sided with the DOJ, saying that the barrier threatened human life and safety, impaired navigation, and violated the Rivers and Harbors Act. He said that neither justification was supported by the evidence. 
The decision specifically criticized the district court attributing the barrier to drownings in the river. 
&#8220;The district court again set aside reason by inferring that the barrier caused the deaths of two people found nearby—one at the southern end of the barrier and the other three miles upriver — from news articles that said nothing of the sort,” Willett wrote.
In a dissent, Circuit Judge Dana Douglas wrote that the lower court&#8217;s decision was backed by the evidence.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and Republican Governor Greg Abbott celebrated the decision.
“We fought to keep these barriers in the water, and with the Fifth Circuit&#8217;s decision, that is exactly where they will remain,” Abbott said. “This fight is far from over. Texas will continue to defend our constitutional right to secure our southern border to keep our state and the nation safe.”
Further litigation on the barriers is expected to begin on August 6.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) said during an interview over the weekend that President Joe Biden&#8217;s weak executive order to secure the U.S. southern border makes the problem even worse and that it solves nothing.
Abbott made the remarks during a Sunday interview with Maria Bartiromo on &#8220;Sunday Morning Futures&#8221; when asked about the controversial executive order.
&#8220;As long as the Biden administration refuses to provide any type of enforcement, any type of blockage of people crossing illegally, all that this new Biden policy is going to do is to actually attract and invite even more people to cross the border illegally,&#8221; he said.
&#8220;There&#8217;s no slowing down of people crossing the border,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;In fact, it&#8217;s just accelerating. This is gaslighting our fellow Americans. When Biden gets up and says, ‘This is going to stop people from coming across the border,’ when he says, &#8216;It&#8217;s going to secure the border,&#8217; in fact, it is making illegal border crossings worse.&#8221;
Abbott said that the order does not do &#8220;anything to actually secure the border — in fact, it&#8217;s the opposite, because he&#8217;s actually authorizing more people to cross the border illegally.&#8221;
&#8220;When you get to that 2,500 number of people crossing the border a day that he says he will allow, but only then stop the asylum process — when he stops the asylum process, there&#8217;s nothing that Biden is doing that actually is preventing anybody else from crossing the border,&#8221; he added. &#8220;There&#8217;s no type of enforcement mechanism in place.&#8221;

Through the initiative, cash rewards will be given to anyone who provides law enforcement with information leading to the arrest of the illegal immigrants on the list. 
“When President Joe Biden took office, he dismantled every effective border policy his predecessor put into place,” Abbott said. “As a result, we have seen record high levels of illegal immigration, including dangerous criminals and terrorists who are a threat to the public safety of our state and our nation.”
“Texas is a law-and-order state, and with the help of our fellow Texans, we will ensure that the illegal immigrants on this list are taken off our streets and put behind bars to keep our communities safe,” Abbott added. “Texas will continue to take unprecedented action to protect Texans and our state from President Biden’s border crisis.”
Illegal immigrants on the list include Victor Hugo Chox Gonzalez, who is wanted for aggravated sexual assault of a child, and Omar David Zavala, who is wanted for sexual assault and making a terroristic threat. 
Other charges faced by individuals on the list include sex abuse of a child and smuggling offense.

Daniel Perry, a 35-year-old U.S. Army sergeant, had been sentenced to 25 years in prison after he was convicted in Travis County on a murder charge from the incident.
Perry insisted that he acted in self-defense during the incident and immediately called 911 and turned himself in to law enforcement.
&#8220;The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles conducted an exhaustive review of U.S. Army Sergeant Daniel Perry’s personal history and the facts surrounding the July 2020 incident and recommended a Full Pardon and Restoration of Full Civil Rights of Citizenship,&#8221; Abbott said in a statement. &#8220;Among the voluminous files reviewed by the Board, they considered information provided by the Travis County District Attorney, the full investigative report on Daniel Perry, plus a review of all the testimony provided at trial.&#8221;
&#8220;Texas has one of the strongest ‘Stand Your Ground’ laws of self-defense that cannot be nullified by a jury or a progressive District Attorney,&#8221; Abbott continued. &#8220;I thank the Board for its thorough investigation, and I approve their pardon recommendation.&#8221;
David Fugitt, the lead investigating detective in the case, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/daniel-perrys-legal-team-files-motion-for-new-trial" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> in an affidavit that District Attorney Jose Garza, whose campaign was backed by billionaire Democrat megadonor George Soros, acted with “criminal behavior” in the case.
“I had several conversations with the District Attorney’s Office regarding the presentation of exculpatory evidence related to Daniel Perry,” Fugitt said. “It became clear to me that the District Attorney’s Office did not want to present evidence to the grand jury that would be exculpatory to Daniel Perry.”

I felt like I did not have any other options but to comply with their orders.”
Fugitt said that Garza’s directive to forbid exculpatory evidence from being shown during the case “is when the conduct of the District Attorney’s Office [went] from highly unethical behavior to criminal behavior.”

Texas Governor Abbott Blasts NYC Mayor Adams: ‘Aiding And Abetting’ Biden’s Border Crisis

The University of Texas at Austin reportedly laid off at least 60 employees in positions related to diversity, equity, and inclusion after a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/texas" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Texas</a> law banning <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/diversity-equity-and-inclusion-dei" target="_blank" rel="noopener">DEI</a> programs and offices at public universities took effect. 
UT Austin announced this week major organizational changes to comply with the state&#8217;s DEI law, <a href="https://capitol.texas.gov/tlodocs/88R/billtext/pdf/SB00017F.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Senate Bill 17</a>, which went into effect in January. The law, signed by Republican Governor Greg Abbott in June 2023, prohibits public colleges in the state from establishing DEI offices and hiring DEI officers. 
In a Tuesday <a href="https://president.utexas.edu/organizational-changes" target="_blank" rel="noopener">letter</a> to staff and students, UT Austin President Jay Hartzell said that the school&#8217;s Division of Campus and Community Engagement, once known as the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement, would close.
“Soon after the passage last year of Senate Bill 17 — which prohibits many activities around diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) — the University embarked on a multiphase process to review campus portfolios and end or redesign the policies, programs, trainings, and roles affected by the new law,” Hartzell said. 
“Additionally, funding used to support DEI across campus prior to SB 17’s effective date will be redeployed to support teaching and research,” he added. “As part of this reallocation, associate or assistant deans who were formerly focused on DEI will return to their full-time faculty positions. The positions that provided support for those associate and assistant deans and a small number of staff roles across campus that were formerly focused on DEI will no longer be funded.”
The Austin American Statesman <a href="https://www.statesman.com/story/news/politics/state/2024/04/02/texas-senate-bill-17-anti-dei-ut-fires-four-staff-related-positions-two-sources-confirm/73179902007/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> that &#8220;at least 60 staff members&#8221; have already been laid off due to the new law. According to Hartzell, employees whose DEI positions are being eliminated would be given the opportunity to apply for other open positions at UT-Austin.

The layoffs come after state Senator Brandon Creighton <a href="https://archive.ph/n9dSp" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote</a> a letter last week informing Texas university leadership that the state Senate would be conducting oversight to ensure that they were complying with the law. 
“When Texas taxpayer dollars are used to fund offices, departments, or employee positions dedicated to promoting DEI initiatives, rather than basing decisions on merit, that is not only inappropriate, it is inconsistent with state law,” said Creighton. “Now that SB 17 is law, I’m confident that Texas public colleges and universities can return to their core mission of innovation and education— and if they do not, the Texas Senate will be resolute in enforcement of this legislation.”
Republican-led states across the country, from Florida to Alabama, have enacted bans on DEI in higher education amid criticism of schools prioritizing identity over education and merit.

Texas authorities arrested a national guardsman on Sunday after he fled from officers while allegedly attempting to smuggle an illegal immigrant into the U.S.
Law enforcement officers of the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Kinney County Sheriff&#8217;s Department arrested Savion Johnson in Brackettville, Texas, after Johnson led law enforcement on a chase that reached speeds in excess of 100 mph, according to the <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/04/04/us-news/texas-national-guardsman-caught-smuggling-migrant-across-southern-border-in-government-suv-near-eagle-pass-crossing/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">New York Post</a>. Johnson has been charged with evading arrest, human smuggling, and the unlawful carry of a weapon.
“If the allegations are true, the accused is a traitor and criminal,&#8221; Abbott Press Secretary Andrew Mahaleris, press secretary for Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott, told <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/watch-dashcam-footage-shows-moment-texas-national-guardsman-arrested-for-allegedly-smuggling-illegal-immigrant" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fox News</a> in a statement.
“We have zero tolerance for Texans who violate laws that directly contradict the mission we are seeking to achieve. The accused&#8217;s illegal smuggling may subject him to a mandatory minimum prison sentence of at least 10 years,” Mahaleris added. “He deserves more.”
Kinney County Sheriff Brad Coe identified Johnson as a member of the Texas National Guard who was taking part in Abbott’s Operation Lone Star, a Texas initiative to combat illegal immigration into the state from its border with Mexico, according to <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/04/03/us/texas-national-guard-migrant-smuggling.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The New York Times</a>.
“It’s not a good thing. But he’s not the first one we’ve picked up that’s associated with the National Guard,” Coe said. “We’ve picked up attorneys. Preachers. Old ones, young ones, juveniles. The money is out there.”

Johnson was allegedly offered $5,000 to $6,000 to smuggle the alien, who was also arrested, according to the Post. Johnson allegedly sped away from a Border Patrol checkpoint in a government vehicle and led officers on a 15-mile chase. The vehicle was stopped after officers used spike strips to blow its tires.
Johnson is the latest law enforcement officer to be arrested for allegedly attempting to smuggle aliens into the U.S. In June, authorities <a href="https://www.ice.gov/news/releases/2-soldiers-charged-attempting-smuggle-noncitizens">arrested</a> two soldiers, including a national guardsman, in the same area as Johnson for allegedly smuggling illegal aliens.
Abbott&#8217;s latest efforts to combat illegal immigration into the United States involve the passage of a law that makes unlawful entry a state crime enforceable by local law enforcement. The law, scheduled to go into effect earlier this year, has been placed on hold by a panel of Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals judges while the court works through a legal challenge to the law&#8217;s constitutionality. The Biden administration has challenged the Texas law, arguing that immigration enforcement is strictly the domain of the federal government.

Many of the illegal immigrants who stormed the southern border on Thursday by breaking down razor wire and fencing before pushing into National Guard troops were reportedly processed and released into the United States after the incident. 
Video captured by New York Post reporter Jennie Taer showed hundreds of illegal immigrant men charging the border in El Paso, Texas, and appearing to assault National Guard troops. According to Taer, many of these men were processed by Border Patrol under <a href="https://www.heritage.org/immigration/commentary/why-the-end-title-42-means-the-end-secure-border">Title 8</a>, a measure that allows illegal immigrants to be released while their asylum claims make it through the courts. 
”This sends the message to people around the world that even if you act like this you can probably get into the country,” Taer said during an interview on Fox News. “And I think they continue to push these boundaries and to see what they can get away with and here they got away with some really, really scary stuff.”

Governor Greg Abbott (R-TX) gave a brief update about the incident a few hours after video of the incident garnered millions of views online. Taer’s video of the incident had been viewed nearly 17 million times by Friday afternoon. 
“The TX National Guard &amp; Dept. of Public Safety quickly regained control &amp; are redoubling the razor wire barriers,” Abbott <a href="https://twitter.com/GregAbbott_TX/status/1770937320151064914">said</a>. “DPS is instructed to arrest every illegal immigrant involved for criminal trespass &amp; destruction of property.”

Republicans responded to the video by calling on President Joe Biden to secure the border and said that Congress should not approve funding for the government while the crisis continued. Under Biden, illegal immigrants have crossed and been released into the United States in record numbers. 
“Republicans cannot approve government funding for the Biden administration to continue this disaster,” Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) <a href="https://twitter.com/SenMikeLee/status/1770895369615872478">said</a>. “The future of our country is at stake.”
“Every American should watch this,” Sen. J.D. Vance <a href="https://twitter.com/JDVance1/status/1770939066525098490">said</a>. “We shouldn’t fund Joe Biden’s government until he does something to address this. The power of the purse is our only leverage.”
