Illinois Democratic Gov. JB Pritzker found himself in a tight spot this week when a television reporter asked the obvious question: Why won&#8217;t you spend a dime to keep the Chicago Bears in Illinois, but you&#8217;ve proudly dropped billions on illegal immigrants?
Pritzker&#8217;s answer? Blame Texas.
In a squirm-worthy exchange, the governor — who&#8217;s been quietly eyeing a 2028 presidential run — was pressed on his refusal to use taxpayer funds to help the Bears stay in Chicago. The team <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/48839546/bears-reiterate-chicago-stadium-options-exhausted">announced</a> in May that it had &#8220;exhausted every opportunity&#8221; to remain in the city, with its only remaining options being suburban Arlington Heights or Hammond, Indiana — potentially ending a 100-year legacy in Chicago.
The interviewer went right for the jugular, pointing out that Pritzker has been more than willing to open the state&#8217;s checkbook for migrants while slamming it shut on an NFL franchise beloved by the city and that actually generates revenue.
Pritzker dodged, weaved, and then — in a moment of breathtaking gall  — pointed the finger at Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott.
&#8220;It was the governor of Texas — Abbott who decided to throw people onto buses and ship them across the country — 55,000 of them — to the city of Chicago,&#8221; Pritzker said, somehow keeping a straight face while explaining why Illinois was forced to spend billions housing, feeding, and clothing migrants who arrived in the dead of winter without so much as a coat.

JB Pritzker’s administration dramatically underestimated the actual price tag of a controversial health care program for adult immigrants who lack legal status, costing the state $1.6 billion since 2020, a state auditor general’s report revealed Wednesday.”
For the Bears — an $8.5 billion franchise and a charter NFL team that has played in Illinois since 1920 — Pritzker suddenly discovered fiscal conservatism.
&#8220;They&#8217;re a private business,&#8221; he <a href="https://www.fox32chicago.com/news/pritzker-bears-taxes?utm_source=chatgpt.com">said</a> last August, declining to support a property tax relief bill that could have kept the team in the state.

The Houston City Council voted Wednesday to walk back a policy that prevented local police from assisting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after the state of Texas threatened to pull more than $110 million in funds.

Houston Democratic Mayor John Whitmire revised the ordinance with the help of Abbott&#8217;s office after voting in favor of it, according to KHOU. The new version states that Houston police will comply with federal laws and can temporarily hold someone for as long as reasonably necessary.
The Houston City Council passed it in a 13-4 vote, KHOU <a href="https://www.khou.com/article/news/local/houston-city-council-approves-revised-immigration-policy-amid-funding-fight/285-feefb140-c43c-4143-afc7-90be1e14119a" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.
A spokesperson for Abbott told The Daily Wire it’s “a step in the right direction after Houston leaders put public safety at risk with reckless policies that undermined law enforcement.”
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) sued the city of Houston over the original ordinance, arguing that “no Texas city will be a safe harbor for illegals.”
Paxton said Wednesday that the legal pressure forced Houston to take &#8220;action to reverse its sanctuary policy.&#8221;
&#8220;My office will continue to review the updated ordinance and ensure that the City of Houston fully complies with SB 4 and does not restrict law enforcement&#8217;s ability to assist ICE and enforce immigration law,&#8221; Paxton wrote on X Wednesday.
Houston originally passed the ordinance barring local police from assisting ICE on April 8. That led Abbott to threaten to pull the $110 million, arguing the original version of the ordinance resulted in a breach of contract over the grants.
The state requires that recipients of the public safety grants must work with ICE. If they refuse to assist ICE, “they forfeit the money” and must “repay to the state every single dollar they have received,” Abbott told The Daily Wire in a recent interview.
“As President Trump sometimes says, they have no cards,” Abbott said. “We have all the cards in this, and they are going to lose, and they’re not going to be able to balance their budget.”
Last week, Whitmire said the city was facing a &#8220;crisis situation,&#8221; adding that “the potential loss of state funding poses real challenges” for local authorities and for security at the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The state has threatened to withhold $90 million in funds from Dallas and $2.5 million from Austin for taking a similar approach to policing.
In a recent interview with The Daily Wire, Abbott fumed at the &#8220;radical leftists and progressives who are running our large blue cities in the state of Texas,&#8221; adding, &#8220;You would think this would be something that would happen in some other state, especially because of the laws that we have in place in the state of Texas that don&#8217;t exist in some of these blue states.&#8221;
&#8220;It was in the city of Houston where there were two illegal immigrants who were apprehended and let go and then went on to murder Jocelyn Nungaray,&#8221; Abbott said. &#8220;And so these people are not comprehending the reality. And that is there are deadly consequences by their failure to ensure that we detain illegal immigrants and make sure they clear through ICE and pose no danger to our community. If things don&#8217;t change in Houston, the city could be losing a lot more than just the $110 million in state funds, Abbott warned. The state comptroller could also withhold $40 million a month that the city receives as a sales tax rebate.
It may be Houston&#8217;s &#8220;largest source of revenue,&#8221; Abbott said.
&#8220;It&#8217;s like you getting a paycheck &#8230; on a monthly basis to be able to pay your bills. The city of Houston is going to not get a paycheck of about $40 million a month where they&#8217;re not going to be able to pay their bills,&#8221; Abbott said.
&#8220;So this truly is a crisis, a financial crisis, the city of Houston is going through. And it&#8217;s not a crisis made by the state of Texas. It&#8217;s a crisis made by their leftist agenda insisting they&#8217;ll pay whatever the consequences in order for them to have sanctuary cities,&#8221; he said.
It all started on April 8, when the Houston City Council passed an ordinance barring local police officers from holding illegal immigrant detainees for extended periods of time for ICE.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton <a href="https://x.com/KenPaxtonTX/status/2019442960312496339/photo/1">filed a lawsuit</a> Thursday against the Muslim Brotherhood and the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) to ban the groups from operating in Texas, where they were recently designated as terror organizations.
“Sharia law and the jihadists who follow sharia law have no business being in Texas,” Paxton said in a statement. “Radical Islamic terrorists are antithetical to law and order, endanger the people of Texas, and are an existential threat to our values.”
The lawsuit builds on earlier action by Texas Governor Greg Abbott, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/desantis-joins-texas-in-designating-cair-and-muslim-brotherhood-as-terrorist-organizations">who labeled</a> the Muslim Brotherhood and CAIR foreign terrorist organizations and urged the federal government to revoke CAIR’s tax-exempt status. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis issued <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/desantis-joins-texas-in-designating-cair-and-muslim-brotherhood-as-terrorist-organizations">a similar designation</a> in late 2025. CAIR sued both states, denied supporting terrorism, and accused DeSantis of being “Israel first.”
The move comes as the Trump administration intensifies its crackdown on Muslim Brotherhood chapters, which included <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-designates-three-muslim-brotherhood-branches-as-terrorist-organizations">designating three</a> foreign branches of the organization as terrorist groups last month.
Paxton’s lawsuit targets the Muslim Brotherhood, CAIR, and CAIR’s chapters in Austin, Houston, and Dallas-Fort Worth. It seeks to prohibit the groups and their affiliates from owning property in Texas or soliciting or recruiting members.
Paxton argues that the Muslim Brotherhood is covertly operating under CAIR, which he identifies as the group’s “American chapter.”
“The Muslim Brotherhood is a radical terror organization that exists to usurp governmental power and establish dominion through sharia law,” Paxton said. “The terrorist ties are unquestionable.”
Paxton claimed that a CAIR-Texas founding board member was convicted in 2008 of funneling $12.4 million to Hamas through the Holy Land Foundation, with CAIR named as an unindicted co-conspirator in the case.
“As the lawsuit notes, CAIR is undeniably the American face of an international terrorist organization,” Paxton added.
When designating the Muslim Brotherhood, Abbott emphasized the group’s suspected ties to Hamas, which has been a U.S.-designated terrorist organization since 1997 and is the Muslim Brotherhood’s Gaza-based branch, which kidnapped and murdered American citizens during the October 7 attack in Israel.
Abbott also cited a recent report that claims CAIR awarded $1,000 cash grants to university students who disrupted classes and intimidated or harassed fellow students “while celebrating Hamas’ October 7th attack.”
“Americans have generous hearts, and federal law wisely creates incentives to donate to nonprofit organizations that promote the public good,” Abbott wrote. “But charity must not become a backdoor to sponsor terrorism, endanger Americans, and subvert our democracy.”
CAIR dismissed the lawsuit in a statement to The Daily Wire, calling it &#8220;defamatory and unconstitutional.&#8221;

With just days to go before the launch of one of the largest school choice programs in the country, Texas officials are fighting to ensure that no taxpayer funds go to institutions tied to the Chinese Communist Party or radical Islam.
On Saturday, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton issued a <a href="https://www.texasattorneygeneral.gov/sites/default/files/opinion-files/opinion/2026/kp-0509_2.pdf">legal opinion</a> confirming the ability of acting state Comptroller Kelly Hancock to deny participation to schools tied to America’s adversaries in the Texas Education Freedom Account program. Hancock, who is overseeing the school choice program, told The Daily Wire that his office has identified “more than a handful” of schools with problematic ties.
“There were several schools in Texas that are connected to the Chinese Communist Party, and those that hosted events [with] or are potentially connected to [the Council on American Islamic Relations],” Hancock said.

Hancock said that his office’s “priority was protecting taxpayer dollars to make sure that they didn&#8217;t end up in the hands of groups that support terrorist activity” or were “hostile” to the United States.
The Republican official is overseeing the rollout of Texas’ school choice program, which will allocate $1 billion in funding for parents to use for approved education expenses, including tuition at private schools. His office is responsible for approving schools that participate in the program and has greenlit 1,457 schools across the state.
As part of this approval process, Hancock said his office wanted to make sure that no schools with ties to CAIR or the CCP would benefit from state dollars.
“We saw some stories breaking in other states that have school choice,” Hancock told The Daily Wire. “I never lost sleep because we were ahead of the game and protecting those taxpayer dollars.”
Many of the schools flagged with problematic ties were accredited through Cognia, an accreditation nonprofit that vets many charter and private schools across the country. Hancock initially paused all approvals for schools accredited by Cognia, including some private Christian schools. But, with the legal opinion from Paxton, many Cognia-accredited schools are now being registered with the state, assuming they have no ties to foreign adversaries.
“We do want to make sure that we run it like a business, and try to protect taxpayer dollars on both sides of it,” Hancock said, asking people to be patient while his office vetted participants.
Hancock told The Daily Wire that the vetting and investigation of schools was still ongoing.
Some examples flagged by his office included the accrediting of potential providers by an agency that had hosted events alongside CAIR and another school that appeared to be owned by a group with an adviser linked to the CCP.
CAIR Texas suggested that it might sue Hancock if he scrutinizes schools that “once hosted an educational lecture from a civil rights organization that Greg Abbott happens to dislike.”
&#8220;Comptroller Hancock cannot bar private schools from this program because of their real or imagined interactions with CAIR-Texas, especially since Attorney General Paxton has sworn to a federal court that the governor&#8217;s unconstitutional proclamation targeting CAIR does not apply to any of its CAIR-Texas chapters,” the organization said. &#8220;Comptroller Hancock must permit private Muslim schools to participate in the program without facing any discrimination, heightened scrutiny or further delays in the application process.”
Abbott <a href="https://x.com/GregAbbott_TX/status/2015479262355079329">praised</a> Paxton’s opinion, saying it would ensure that taxpayer “dollars will not be used for schools connected to groups like CAIR or countries like China that I have designated as foreign terrorist organizations.”

Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott is calling on the Trump administration to strip the largest self-described Muslim civil rights non-profit organization in the United States of its tax-exempt status for its alleged ties to foreign terrorist organizations.
In a <a href="https://gov.texas.gov/uploads/files/press/Scott_Bessent.pdf">letter</a> sent Tuesday to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Abbott requested an investigation into the Council on American-Islamic Relations’ tax-exempt status over alleged ties to Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood, which President Donald Trump has made moves to designate as a terrorist organization.
Last week, Trump <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-signs-executive-order-targeting-the-muslim-brotherhood">signed an executive order</a> paving the way for his administration to classify certain Muslim Brotherhood chapters as terrorist organizations. He said that “final documents are being drawn” for the designation to be “done in the strongest and most powerful terms.”
Abbott argued that CAIR has been identified by federal investigators and court filings as “a direct subsidiary of the Muslim Brotherhood” and as a “front group” for Hamas in the United States. Abbott emphasized that Hamas has been a U.S.-designated terrorist organization since 1997 and is the Muslim Brotherhood’s Gaza-based branch, which kidnapped and murdered American citizens during the October 7 attack in Israel.

Last month, Abbott <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/not-welcome-in-our-state-texas-governor-designates-radical-muslim-groups-as-foreign-terrorists">issued a proclamation</a> designating the Muslim Brotherhood and CAIR as terrorist organizations in Texas, accusing them of seeking to “forcibly impose Sharia law.” Abbott’s order prohibits the groups from purchasing or acquiring property in Texas and subjects affiliates to enhanced state penalties.
“The actions taken by the Muslim Brotherhood and CAIR to support terrorism across the globe and subvert our laws through violence, intimidation, and harassment are unacceptable,” Abbott said at the time. “These radical extremists are not welcome in our state and are now prohibited from acquiring any real property interest in Texas.”
CAIR responded by suing Abbott and denying the allegations, claiming it has “consistently condemned all forms of unjust violence, including hate crimes, ethnic cleansing, genocide and terrorism.” 
“Although we are flattered by Greg Abbott’s obsession with our civil rights organization, his publicity stunt masquerading as a proclamation has no basis in fact or law,” the group said. “By defaming a prominent American Muslim institution with debunked conspiracy theories and made-up quotes, Mr. Abbott has once again shown that his top priority is advancing anti-Muslim bigotry, not serving the people of Texas.”
CAIR did not respond to a request for comment.

Nearly one in three truck drivers pulled over during a recent operation in Texas were illegal immigrants, many of whom received Commercial Driver&#8217;s Licenses in California, Texas Governor Greg Abbott revealed Wednesday.
Texas troopers, with the help of federal immigration authorities, found that 31 of the 105 truckers they pulled over in the state&#8217;s panhandle on Nov. 11 were in the country illegally. The sweep follows a series of recent fatal crashes that were caused by illegal immigrant truckers carrying Commercial Driver&#8217;s Licenses and as the Trump administration commences a nationwide crackdown.

Texas will appeal a federal court ruling that blocked the state’s new congressional map, which would give Republicans an additional five seats.
U.S. District Judge Jeffrey Brown ruled Tuesday that Texas’s new map was likely unconstitutional, saying it should instead use its 2021 maps.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott said Tuesday that the maps were redrawn “to better reflect Texas’ conservative voting preferences — and for no other reason,” slamming the court&#8217;s “discriminatory” claims against the map as “absurd and unsupported by testimony offered during ten days of hearings.”
Abbott also called the court’s ruling “clearly erroneous.”
“The public perception of this case is that it’s about politics,” the ruling from the panel of judges stated. “To be sure, politics played a role in drawing the 2025 map. Substantial evidence shows that Texas racially gerrymandered the 2025 map.&#8221;
The case now heads to the Supreme Court. In the meantime, Democrats are cheering Judge Brown&#8217;s ruling.
“The Trump-Abbott maps are clearly illegal, and I’m glad these judges have blocked them. If this decision stands, I look forward to running for reelection in my current district,” said Rep. Greg Casar (D-TX).
“No matter what, we must fight to pass a federal ban on gerrymandering once and for all,” he added.
The ruling comes as Indiana, Virginia, and Florida are also fighting in redistricting battles. It’s unclear what the House maps nationwide could look like ahead of the 2026 election.
“I am working with Governor Mike Braun and other Indiana Republicans, on picking up two Republican Congressional seats,” President Donald Trump posted to Truth Social on Tuesday.
California voters earlier this month overwhelmingly approved Proposition 50, a ballot measure designed to counter Texas’s new map with five additional Democrat seats. The Justice Department and California Republican Party are suing to block the measure.
The Supreme Court is also considering a Louisiana-based case that could shake up maps in the South in favor of Republicans, as there is a possibility that Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act could be scrapped.

Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott designated the Muslim Brotherhood and the Council on American-Islamic Relations as foreign terrorist organizations on Tuesday, citing each group&#8217;s ties to Islamic extremism and accusing them of seeking to &#8220;forcibly impose Sharia law.&#8221;
Abbott&#8217;s <a href="https://gov.texas.gov/uploads/files/press/PROC_declaring_Muslim_Brotherhood_and_CAIR_Transnational_Criminal_Organizations_IMAGE_11-18-2025.pdf">action</a> bans the Muslim groups from purchasing or acquiring land in Texas and subjects anyone affiliated with them to heightened state penalties.

For years, the Muslim Brotherhood has advocated for extremism and been connected to Islamic terrorists. The Muslim Brotherhood, which started as a militant group in Egypt in 1928, has spread throughout the world and is tied to numerous jihadist groups, according to a 2018 Congressional <a href="https://www.congress.gov/event/115th-congress/house-event/108532/text">report</a>. The Muslim Brotherhood&#8217;s founder, Hassan al-Banna, was outspoken about fighting non-Muslims through jihad and wrote that &#8220;Jihad is an obligation from Allah and every Muslim and cannot be ignored nor evaded.&#8221; In recent years, the Brotherhood condemned the United States for killing terrorism mastermind Osama bin Laden, and one of its most influential leaders, Yusuf al-Qaradawi, <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20070612234906/http://memri.org/bin/articles.cgi?Page=subjects&amp;Area=jihad&amp;ID=SP79404#_edn1">called</a> for terrorist attacks against U.S. troops in Iraq.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations, a self-described civil rights organization, has been criticized over its ties to the Muslim Brotherhood. U.S. authorities have also posited that CAIR was established as a front for Hamas. In a 2008 case, which was the largest terrorism financing trial in U.S. history, the council and its co-founders were named as unindicted co-conspirators in a plot to funnel millions of dollars to Hamas. Multiple people who have worked for CAIR have also been sentenced for planning to aid terrorist groups, such as Al Qaeda and the Taliban.
The council has denied the allegations tying it to Hamas and responded to Abbott&#8217;s move to designate it as a foreign terrorist organization.

Abbott&#8217;s move comes as Muslims plan to develop a massive compound in North Texas, which is being <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/texas/news/epic-city-muslim-community-doj-investigation-ends/">investigated</a> by state and federal authorities. The compound aims to create a Muslim-centered community on 400 acres of land and is spearheaded by the East Plano Islamic Center, the largest mosque in Texas.
The Muslim development plans are not connected to the Muslim Brotherhood or the Council on American-Islamic Relations. The Justice Department launched an investigation into the plans after Texas Republican Sen. John Cornyn raised concerns about religious discrimination surrounding the housing development.
&#8220;Religious discrimination and Sharia Law have no place in the Lone Star State,&#8221; Cornyn <a href="https://www.cornyn.senate.gov/news/cornyn-announces-doj-investigation-into-epic-city/">said</a> in May. &#8220;Any violations of federal law must be swiftly prosecuted, and I know under the Trump administration, they will be.&#8221;

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is facing scrutiny as the state continues to provide vehicle registrations to illegal immigrants, The Daily Wire has learned.
Republican State Rep. Brian Harrison’s office <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ice-nabs-over-120-illegal-immigrant-drivers-after-probe-exposes-major-loophole-found-in-texas-dmv">sent a letter</a> on Nov. 3 to the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles Board to crack down on state authorities after he “received alarming reports of illegal immigrants being able to register their vehicles” in Texas without a state license.
Since then, the Texas DMV &#8220;confirmed that they are and have been issuing vehicle registrations to illegal aliens,&#8221; Harrison wrote in a letter to Abbott Monday.
&#8220;While I appreciate DMV telling me they are attempting to determine the &#8216;full understanding of options available to address the issues,&#8217; this requires immediate action,&#8221; Harrison wrote to Abbott.
&#8220;Texas should be leading the fight against illegal immigration, not incentivizing it,&#8221; Harrison wrote, adding, &#8220;This is unacceptable.&#8221;
Abbott&#8217;s office, however, denied that illegal immigrants are getting any permission by the state to drive or have vehicles.
&#8220;In Texas, illegal immigrants cannot be issued a driver&#8217;s license or use a motor vehicle on Texas&#8217; roads,&#8221; Abbott spokesperson Andrew Mahaleris told The Daily Wire.
The Trump administration has worked to get illegal immigrant drivers off the roads through its mass deportation campaign.
Federal agents arrested more than 120 illegal immigrant drivers on Texas roadways in a single day last month as part of an effort to clear “our roads of dangerous, often unlicensed and uninsured, illegal aliens who should NOT be behind the wheel,” the agency said.
