Federal authorities said they were forced to fire at a boat packed with 25 illegal migrants from China who were hoping to reach the shores of Florida, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
The Coast Guard caught the group about a mile south of Key Biscayne, Florida on June 10, DHS said. The migrants initially failed to comply with federal authorities&#8217; orders to stop, forcing the Coast Guard to deploy warning shots, which were ineffective.
The Coast Guardsmen then fired a &#8220;disabling&#8221; shot that stopped the boat without any reported injuries, according to DHS.
&#8220;By land or sea, our borders are CLOSED,&#8221; DHS said in an<a href="https://x.com/DHSgov/status/2067314866671493123"> X post</a> regarding the interception. &#8220;This sends a clear message to ANY illegal alien attempting to enter the United States: don’t even think about it.&#8221;
The Coast Guard crew transported the group of Chinese nationals for further processing. Authorities also seized their boat and transported it to the Coast Guard station in Miami Beach.
“Our Coast Guard crews, working closely with our local, state, and federal maritime law enforcement partners, remain vigilant in detecting and deterring unlawful maritime migration ventures,” Lieutenant Matthew Ross, commanding officer, Coast Guard Station Miami Beach, said.
“Anyone considering one of these dangerous voyages should understand that they are risking their lives at sea and can expect to be interdicted and repatriated,&#8221; Ross said.
The encounter follows an <a href="https://www.news.uscg.mil/Press-Releases/Article/4516342/correction-coast-guard-interdicts-17-aliens-near-sunset-cliffs/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">incident</a> off the coast of San Diego, where the Coast Guard caught a group of 17 suspected illegal immigrant trying to reach the United States by boat. Coast Guard airmen spotted the vessel at around 1:18 a.m. on Sunday southwest of Point Loma.
A boat crew then responded and boarded the boat, where they found 10 claiming Mexican nationals, four claiming Guatemalan nationals, and two claiming Salvadoran nationals, along with one unaccompanied minor claiming Guatemalan.
The Coast Guard brought the migrants aboard one of their boats before handing them over to Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
On June 7, the Coast Guard <a href="https://www.news.uscg.mil/Press-Releases/Article/4514532/coast-guard-interdicts-9-aliens-near-coronado-island-calif/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">interdicted</a> nine Mexican illegal immigrants near Coronado Island, California. The group was transferred to the custody of Border Patrol.
Coast Guard Capt. Jason Hagen, who is the southwest district chief of enforcement, told <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/how-cartels-are-forced-to-shift-tactics-after-trump-crushed-their-human-smuggling-empire" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Daily Wire</a> in November that authorities were observing an uptick in smuggling interdictions.
“As you lock down the land border, the cartels will need to make their money, so they push to the maritime, to the water side. And, unfortunately, there is no border wall in the ocean; we’re challenged with the tyranny of distance,” Hagen said at the time.

In a blow to national security and maritime safety, the U.S. Coast Guard is facing an internal crisis as the partial Department of Homeland Security (DHS) shutdown reaches its 75th day.
Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Kevin Lunday revealed that the funding lapse has become so severe that utility companies are beginning to shut off power, water, and gas at active military installations across the country.
During a CBS News interview, Lunday confirmed that &#8220;the lights are shutting off&#8221; at stations tasked with life-saving missions. In the last several days, Station Channel Islands in California and Station Port Huron in Michigan had their power cut off, while Air Station Barbers Point in Hawaii saw its natural gas service interrupted.
While the Coast Guard was able to restore these specific services, Lunday warned that the number of shutoffs is expected to rise. These stations operate 24/7, 365 days a year, standing ready to respond to mariners in distress or national security threats.

The U.S. military seized another Venezuelan-linked oil tanker in the Caribbean early Thursday morning, as federal authorities intensified enforcement against sanctioned vessels tied to the Maduro regime. 
Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem said a Coast Guard tactical team conducted a pre-dawn raid of the motor tanker Veronica, the sixth sanctioned vessel seized by the Coast Guard in recent weeks. The operation went smoothly, and the ship was seized without incident, Noem said. 
“As another sanctioned ghost fleet tanker, Motor Tanker Veronica had previously passed through Venezuelan waters, and was operating in defiance of President Trump’s established quarantine of sanctioned vessels in the Caribbean,” Noem posted on X, sharing footage of the operation.

Ford. The task force is focused on disrupting drug trafficking and other illegal activities in the Western Hemisphere. 
“The Veronica is the latest tanker operating in defiance of President Trump’s established quarantine of sanctioned vessels in the Caribbean, proving the effectiveness of Operation Southern Spear yet again,” Southern Command said. “The only oil leaving Venezuela will be oil that is coordinated properly and lawfully.”
Trump has promised that American companies will invest billions to rebuild Venezuelan oil fields. 
Last week, the Coast Guard seized a tanker flying a Russian flag that had previously bypassed an American blockade. The ship, the Marinera, had been on the run for two weeks and was set to be escorted by a Russian submarine and warships. 
The operation came a few hours ahead of President Donald Trump’s meeting with Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado. The meeting is expected to focus on Venezuela’s future following the capture of dictator Nicolás Maduro earlier this month. Trump has said he doesn’t expect Machado to have enough support to become Venezuela’s next leader.

The operation was a joint effort between the State Department, War Department, and the Department of Homeland Security. Earlier this week, the Coast Guard seized two other sanctioned oil tankers. 
“The ghost fleets will not outrun justice. They will not hide under false claims of nationality,” Noem said. “The Coast Guard will seize sanctioned oil tankers, enforce U.S. and international law, and eliminate these funding streams for illicit activity including narco-terrorism.”

Since the Trump administration began targeting alleged drug boats in September, more than 100 suspected drug traffickers have been killed in strikes targeting more than 30 boats. Previous survivors have been repatriated to their home countries and referred for drug trafficking prosecution. 
In an escalation, American forces last week took out a drug facility at a Venezuelan port allegedly used to load narcotics onto smuggling vessels.
“There was a major explosion in the dock area where they load the boats up with drugs,” Trump said Monday. “We hit all the boats, and now we hit the area… it’s the implementation area. That’s where they implement, and that is no longer around.”

The Coast Guard said Thursday that it encountered a Russian military vessel just outside of American territorial waters near Hawaii last month. 
The incident took place on October 29, after the Coast Guard detected a Russian vessel 15 miles off the coast of Oahu. Territorial waters extend 12 miles out from the shore, meaning that the Russian ship was within three miles of U.S. territorial waters. 
In response to the ship, the Coast Guard said that it conducted “a safe and professional overflight and transiting” near the Russian vessel involving an HC-130 Hercules airplane from Air Station Barbers Point and the William Hart, a Coast Guard cutter. 
“The U.S. Coast Guard routinely monitors maritime activity around the Hawaiian Islands and throughout the Pacific to ensure the safety and security of U.S. waters,” said Captain Matthew Chong, the chief of response for the Coast Guard Oceania District. “Working in concert with partners and allies, our crews monitor and respond to foreign military vessel activity near our territorial waters to protect our maritime borders and defend our sovereign interests.”
The Russian vessel was an intelligence ship <a href="https://odin.tradoc.army.mil/WEG/Asset/Vishnya_Class_%28Project_864_Class%29_Russian_Intelligence_Collection_Ship">built</a> in 1986 for the Soviet Union and was equipped with close-in weapon systems and surface-to-air missile launchers.
The Coast Guard said that it was “monitoring the Russian vessel’s activities near U.S. territorial waters to provide maritime security for U.S. vessels operating in the area and to support U.S. homeland defense efforts.”
Tensions have been elevated between Russia and the United States in recent weeks after President Donald Trump <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-sounds-alarm-china-and-russia-conducting-secret-nuke-tests">directed</a> the military to conduct new nuclear weapon tests. Energy Secretary Chris Wright said that upcoming U.S. testing would involve systems checks, not nuclear detonations. 
Trump said last week that the reason for the move was because of secret tests by Russia and China, suggesting that they may be conducting tests underground. 
“Russia’s testing, and China’s testing, but they don’t talk about it. You know, we’re an open society. We’re different. We talk about it. We have to talk about it, because otherwise you people are going to report,” Trump said. “We’re going to test, because they test and others test.”
Russia has denied Trump&#8217;s allegations and <a href="https://www.newsweek.com/nuclear-warning-russia-us-vladimir-putin-marco-rubio-11041023">said</a> that it would “respond in kind” if the U.S. moved forward with nuclear testing.

The shooting happened as anti-Immigration and Customs Enforcement protesters gathered near the entrance of the military installation. U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents recently <a href="https://apnews.com/article/federal-immigration-enforcement-coast-guard-island-05d4c04c4936e85205e4c2320a5be945">arrived</a> at the Coast Guard base as part of the federal government&#8217;s illegal immigration crackdown.
Earlier on Thursday, federal agents and California Highway Patrol officers clashed with protesters outside of the Coast Guard base, as civilian employees left the base located on a small island on San Francisco Bay. The base has only one entrance, reached by a bridge. The Coast Guard security personnel were positioned on the bridge as the protests continued late into the night.

Two men arrived at the hospital with gunshot wounds after the shooting, Mercury News <a href="https://www.mercurynews.com/2025/10/24/coast-guard-shooting-oakland-immigration-protest/">reported</a>. One of the men is believed to be the driver of the U-Haul, while the second man&#8217;s identity was unclear. The rental truck was later found by law enforcement.

The Coast Guard said the operation involves a &#8220;surge&#8221; of cutters, aircraft, and tactical teams working with international partners to interdict drug routes from South America. The weekend strike came just seven days after a separate, unprecedented move: a U.S. Marine Corps strike team sank another suspected drug boat in the southern Caribbean Sea, which officials say was operated by Tren de Aragua, a Venezuelan narco-gang.
That September 2 military strike — personally confirmed by President Donald Trump — marked the first direct lethal action against an alleged cartel vessel under Trump’s renewed war on narco-terrorism.
Speaking from the White House, Trump declared: “We just, over the last few minutes, shot out a drug-carrying boat … These came out of Venezuela. And there’s more where that came from.”

Authorities said on Friday that there are no survivors after finding a Bering Air Cessna Caravan with 10 people on board that crashed on sea ice after going missing over the Norton Sound in Alaska on Thursday.
According to the U.S. Coast Guard, rescuers looking for the missing aircraft spotted the wreckage from a helicopter, the Associated Press <a href="https://apnews.com/article/missing-aircraft-alaska-search-10-people-eb496188285ed54c9a527f658d4ff70a" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. The Cessna Caravan, which is a single-engine propeller plane, left Unalakleet, Alaska, at 2:37 p.m. local time and was supposed to land in Nome, Alaska, which is a short flight across the Norton Sound. At around 4:00 p.m., Alaska State troopers received word around 4:00 p.m. that the plane was overdue, and authorities began search operations.
The Coast Guard said that at 3:18, the airplane had “some kind of event which caused them to experience a rapid loss in elevation and a rapid loss in speed.&#8221; Visibility was poor at the time of the crash as the area experienced light snow and fog.
All 10 people onboard the flight, which included nine passengers and one pilot, were adults, Lt. Ben Endres of the Alaska State Troopers said, according to the AP. Bering Air is based in Nome and operates passenger and charter airline services. Since the sea ice is unstable, authorities are trying to move fast to recover the bodies and any parts of the plane that will aid officials in their investigation into the crash.

“They are on the ice as we speak,” said Nome Volunteer Fire Department Chief Jim West. “The conditions out there are dynamic, and so we’ve got to do it safely and the fastest way we can.”
Alaska Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski addressed the crash during a press conference, saying, “It’s hard to accept the reality of our loss.” Nome Mayor John Handeland added, “Nome is a strong community, and in challenging times we come together and support each other. I expect the outpouring of support to continue in the coming days as we all work to recover from this tragic incident.&#8221;
The crash is the third on U.S. soil in 2025. Last month, an Army Black Hawk helicopter carrying three service members collided with an American Eagle flight that had 64 people on board. The crash sent both aircraft into the Potomac River near Washington, D.C., killing all 67 people involved. A plane with 10 people aboard went missing while flying from Unalakleet to Nome, Alaska, on Thursday, sparking a search and rescue operation from state and federal authorities.
The Bering Air Caravan airplane with one pilot and nine passengers left Unalakleet at 2:37 p.m. local time, and Alaska State troopers received word around 4:00 p.m. that the plane was overdue in Nome, CBS News <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/plane-missing-alaska-10-on-board-nome/?ftag=CNM-00-10aab7e&amp;linkId=740695350" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. The plane appeared to be traveling over the Norton Sound when it potentially encountered near-whiteout fog. FlightRadar <a href="https://www.flightradar24.com/data/aircraft/n321ba#39086384" target="_blank" rel="noopener">data</a> showed a Bering Air Caravan plane last reporting data at 3:16 p.m.
&#8220;U.S. Coast Guard District 17 responded to an aircraft emergency notification from Alaska Rescue Coordination Center at 4:30 p.m. today for a Cessna Caravan that reported to have 10 people aboard,&#8221; U.S. Coast Guard Alaska <a href="https://x.com/USCGAlaska/status/1887733606472388886" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> in a statement. &#8220;An HC-130 Hercules airplane crew from Air Station Kodiak to search their last known position. The Bering Air Cessna Caravan is a single-engine propeller plane. Bering Air is based in Nome and operates passenger and charter airline services.
Due to low visibility, the search plane flew over the water and along the shoreline with equipment that could help locate the missing aircraft. Authorities told people not to form their own search parties due to the weather. The Nome Volunteer Fire Department said, &#8220;We continue to expand search efforts to as many avenues as possible until the plane is located.&#8221;
In an update at 12:30 a.m. local time on Friday, the fire department said the plane was still missing.
&#8220;We do not have any updated information on the location of the missing aircraft. Crews are still searching on the ground, canvassing as much area as possible,&#8221; the fire department <a href="https://www.facebook.com/NVFDAlaska" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a> added. &#8220;The National Guard C-130 reported they found nothing found so far. The Airforce also sent a C-130 resumed the search and also have reported no visuals, and have one hour of flight search time remaining. If nothing further is reported, the next update will be at 9am.&#8221;

The Coast Guard&#8217;s new emphasis on cracking down on illegal immigration comes as Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents have begun carrying out Trump&#8217;s deportation operation. Trump&#8217;s border czar, Tom Homan, told Fox News on Tuesday that ICE officers have been ordered to &#8220;go make arrests&#8221; of illegal immigrants with criminal records.
&#8220;[S]o they’re out there right now looking for the most serious public safety threats throughout the country,&#8221; Homan said.
Among the numerous executive orders signed by Trump on Monday night, the president declared a national emergency at the southern border, reinstated the &#8220;remain in Mexico&#8221; policy, and ended the CBP One app that allowed migrants to set up appointments in the U.S. to claim asylum. A documentary film is in the works about the ill-fated <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/oceangate" target="_blank" rel="noopener">OceanGate</a> Titan submersible, and it promises to tell the story behind the headlines about the underwater craft that imploded, killing all five of its passengers in June 2023.
The film is directed by Aron Arngrimsson, who was the last person to see the Titan crew alive before the small crew set out on its doomed fatal trip to see the remains of the Titanic on June 18, 2023, the <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/titan-submersible-implosion-documentary-in-works-1236088385/?taid=6761ae58a1361c00013e3066&amp;utm_campaign=trueanthem&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter">Hollywood Reporter</a> reported.
