Authorities said on Friday that there are no survivors after finding a Bering Air Cessna Caravan with 10 people on board that crashed on sea ice after going missing over the Norton Sound in Alaska on Thursday.
According to the U.S. Coast Guard, rescuers looking for the missing aircraft spotted the wreckage from a helicopter, the Associated Press <a href="https://apnews.com/article/missing-aircraft-alaska-search-10-people-eb496188285ed54c9a527f658d4ff70a" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. The Cessna Caravan, which is a single-engine propeller plane, left Unalakleet, Alaska, at 2:37 p.m. local time and was supposed to land in Nome, Alaska, which is a short flight across the Norton Sound. At around 4:00 p.m., Alaska State troopers received word around 4:00 p.m. that the plane was overdue, and authorities began search operations.
The Coast Guard said that at 3:18, the airplane had “some kind of event which caused them to experience a rapid loss in elevation and a rapid loss in speed.&#8221; Visibility was poor at the time of the crash as the area experienced light snow and fog.
All 10 people onboard the flight, which included nine passengers and one pilot, were adults, Lt. Ben Endres of the Alaska State Troopers said, according to the AP. Bering Air is based in Nome and operates passenger and charter airline services. Since the sea ice is unstable, authorities are trying to move fast to recover the bodies and any parts of the plane that will aid officials in their investigation into the crash.

“They are on the ice as we speak,” said Nome Volunteer Fire Department Chief Jim West. “The conditions out there are dynamic, and so we’ve got to do it safely and the fastest way we can.”
Alaska Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski addressed the crash during a press conference, saying, “It’s hard to accept the reality of our loss.” Nome Mayor John Handeland added, “Nome is a strong community, and in challenging times we come together and support each other. I expect the outpouring of support to continue in the coming days as we all work to recover from this tragic incident.&#8221;
The crash is the third on U.S. soil in 2025. Last month, an Army Black Hawk helicopter carrying three service members collided with an American Eagle flight that had 64 people on board. The crash sent both aircraft into the Potomac River near Washington, D.C., killing all 67 people involved. Days later, a medical jet carrying a pediatric patient crashed in north Philadelphia, killing all six people on board and one person on the ground and injuring more than 20 others.

A plane with 10 people aboard went missing while flying from Unalakleet to Nome, Alaska, on Thursday, sparking a search and rescue operation from state and federal authorities.
The Bering Air Caravan airplane with one pilot and nine passengers left Unalakleet at 2:37 p.m. local time, and Alaska State troopers received word around 4:00 p.m. that the plane was overdue in Nome, CBS News <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/plane-missing-alaska-10-on-board-nome/?ftag=CNM-00-10aab7e&amp;linkId=740695350" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. The plane appeared to be traveling over the Norton Sound when it potentially encountered near-whiteout fog. FlightRadar <a href="https://www.flightradar24.com/data/aircraft/n321ba#39086384" target="_blank" rel="noopener">data</a> showed a Bering Air Caravan plane last reporting data at 3:16 p.m.
&#8220;U.S. Coast Guard District 17 responded to an aircraft emergency notification from Alaska Rescue Coordination Center at 4:30 p.m. today for a Cessna Caravan that reported to have 10 people aboard,&#8221; U.S. Coast Guard Alaska <a href="https://x.com/USCGAlaska/status/1887733606472388886" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> in a statement. &#8220;An HC-130 Hercules airplane crew from Air Station Kodiak to search their last known position. The aircraft was 12 miles offshore transiting from Unalakleet to Nome when its position was lost. More information to follow as it becomes available.&#8221;
The Bering Air Cessna Caravan is a single-engine propeller plane. Bering Air is based in Nome and operates passenger and charter airline services.
Due to low visibility, the search plane flew over the water and along the shoreline with equipment that could help locate the missing aircraft. Authorities told people not to form their own search parties due to the weather. The Nome Volunteer Fire Department said, &#8220;We continue to expand search efforts to as many avenues as possible until the plane is located.&#8221;
In an update at 12:30 a.m. local time on Friday, the fire department said the plane was still missing.
&#8220;We do not have any updated information on the location of the missing aircraft. Crews are still searching on the ground, canvassing as much area as possible,&#8221; the fire department <a href="https://www.facebook.com/NVFDAlaska" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a> added. &#8220;The National Guard C-130 reported they found nothing found so far. The Airforce also sent a C-130 resumed the search and also have reported no visuals, and have one hour of flight search time remaining. If nothing further is reported, the next update will be at 9am.&#8221;

The Coast Guard&#8217;s new emphasis on cracking down on illegal immigration comes as Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents have begun carrying out Trump&#8217;s deportation operation. Trump&#8217;s border czar, Tom Homan, told Fox News on Tuesday that ICE officers have been ordered to &#8220;go make arrests&#8221; of illegal immigrants with criminal records.
&#8220;[S]o they’re out there right now looking for the most serious public safety threats throughout the country,&#8221; Homan said.
Among the numerous executive orders signed by Trump on Monday night, the president declared a national emergency at the southern border, reinstated the &#8220;remain in Mexico&#8221; policy, and ended the CBP One app that allowed migrants to set up appointments in the U.S. to claim asylum. Trump also signed an order to end birthright citizenship, a move that has already received <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/dem-attorneys-general-sue-trump-over-birthright-citizenship-exec-order" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pushback</a> from 22 states with Democrat attorneys general who argue that it violates the 14th Amendment.
Homan called the executive orders “game-changers,” adding that they would lead to the “most secure border in my lifetime.”

A documentary film is in the works about the ill-fated <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/oceangate" target="_blank" rel="noopener">OceanGate</a> Titan submersible, and it promises to tell the story behind the headlines about the underwater craft that imploded, killing all five of its passengers in June 2023.
The film is directed by Aron Arngrimsson, who was the last person to see the Titan crew alive before the small crew set out on its doomed fatal trip to see the remains of the Titanic on June 18, 2023, the <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/titan-submersible-implosion-documentary-in-works-1236088385/?taid=6761ae58a1361c00013e3066&amp;utm_campaign=trueanthem&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter">Hollywood Reporter</a> reported.
“He [Arngrimsson] exclusively tells the emotional experience of five Titan crew members, revealing the family stories behind the media headlines and exposing the painful consequences of an exploration gone wrong,” a synopsis from the producers read, per THR.

The mayor of Newport Beach, California, blasted California lawmakers after a boat of illegal aliens arrived in his town and were apprehended by the Coast Guard.
The boat of 21 illegal aliens, including one Russian, two Uzbeks, and 18 Mexicans, was apprehended roughly a mile off the coast of the Orange County city late last week.
“When you have people from Uzbekistan of all places coming in through the southern border, something is broken,” Newport Beach Mayor Will O’Neill <a href="https://www.foxla.com/news/coast-guard-apprehends-more-than-20-migrants-boat-off-newport-beach-coast">said in an interview</a>. “We are told that our local authorities are prohibited from working with federal authorities to stop people like this.”
He specifically cited <a href="https://apps.sdsheriff.net/PublicDocs/SB978/Law%20Enforcement%20Services%20Bureau/Field%20Operations%20Manual/POLICY%2015_CA%20Senate%20Bill%2054.pdf">Senate Bill 54</a>, which prevents state and local resources or personnel from being used to assist federal immigration enforcement efforts.

It isn’t the first time that illegal aliens have attempted to enter Newport Beach by boat. Roughly 20 suspected migrants were caught on camera arriving at Newport Harbor before scattering in the spring of this year.
One resident expressed her concern following the attempted illegal entry, indicating that she’s worried about the toll that illegal immigration takes on public, taxpayer-funded services.
The incident is part of a broader trend of illegal alien smugglers entering the United States by boat. That potential landing occurred just weeks after video footage <a href="https://nypost.com/2023/12/02/news/migrant-boat-lands-near-celebrity-mansions-in-malibu/">captured</a> a boat of roughly two dozen illegal aliens landing on the shore of Malibu, over 100 miles north of the United States border with Mexico.
Maritime smuggling operations are also notoriously dangerous. A new photo has been released which shows the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/oceangate" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Titanic submersible Titan’s</a> final resting spot after the underwater craft imploded, killing all five of its passengers in June 2023.

Officials said during the hearing that the new photo has led to the “conclusive evidence of a catastrophic loss” of the submersible and the passengers on board.

After about 15 minutes, Titan responded that it had communication, and the Polar Prince replied, “I need better comms from you.”
Titan, in turn, responded, “yes,” and said they “lost system oand [sic] chat settings.”
At 10:15 a.m., the Polar Prince asked again, “status? do you see polar prince on your display?” Titan responded soon after, “yes,” and, “all good here.”
Minutes later, Titan notified the Polar Prince that they were “east south east [of] the nbow [sic],” which officials suspected meant the crew had almost reached their destination, the wreckage of the Titanic.
Titan then asked the Polar Prince if they were also at the bow, and Polar Prince said, “making our way there … your position jumps significantly each ping” — which the ship repeated to the Titan at 10:36.

During a hearing on Monday with the U.S. Coast Guard — into the cause of the implosion of Titan in June of 2023 — officials revealed that minutes before the five passengers on the submersible were lost forever, the crew had sent a message that the dive was going according to plan, <a href="https://people.com/final-messages-from-titan-submersible-revealed-before-losing-contact-with-surface-8713221">People magazine</a> reported.

After about 40 minutes, routine messages between the two took a turn with the Polar Prince asking numerous times if the submersible can see the ship on its display. When there was no response, the ship started sending urgent messages.
After about 15 minutes, Titan responded that it had communication and the Polar Prince replied, “I need better comms from you.”

At 10:15 am, the Polar Prince asked again, “status? do you see polar prince on your display?” Titan responded soon after, “yes,” and, “all good here.”
Minutes later, Titan notified the Polar Prince that they were “east south east [of] the nbow,” which officials suspected meant the crew had almost reached their destination, the wreckage of the Titanic.
Titan then asked the Polar Prince if they were also at the bow, and Polar Prince said, “making our way there … your position jumps significantly each ping” — which the ship repeated to the Titan at 10:36.

After the U.S. Coast Guard confirmed that the five passengers aboard the Titan died after the vessel imploded earlier this week, questions remain about the timeline of the implosion and the “banging” noises rescue teams heard days after the search operation began.
The Wall Street Journal <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/u-s-navy-detected-titan-sub-implosion-days-ago-6844cb12?mod=wknd_pos1">reported</a> Thursday that the U.S. Navy <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/top-secret-u-s-navy-system-detected-titan-sub-implosion-days-ago">immediately began listening</a> for the Titan once it learned that it had gone dark and detected an implosion a short time later, which means the submersible likely imploded on Sunday. But on Tuesday and Wednesday, a Canadian airplane detected “banging” noises in 30-minute intervals in the area near the Titanic wreckage, causing people to speculate that those aboard the Titan were alive and signaling for help. 
So what were the underwater noises picked up by search teams days after officials said they heard the Titan’s implosion? Experts have some theories.
<h2>Search Equipment</h2>
The area surrounding the Titanic wreck was being searched by multiple ships, sonobuoys, and remote operated vehicles (ROVs) when the underwater noises were picked up. Experts began analyzing the recordings immediately after sounds were detected by sonobuoys that had been deployed by search aircraft. From the beginning, authorities said they were unsure of what was causing the banging, but according to some experts, it wouldn’t take them long to determine if the sounds came from humans, machines, or animals. 
“I think it would be pretty straightforward to determine whether something is an Earth signal or a biological signal or a machine signal,” said Dr. Simone Baumann-Pickering, an acoustic ecologist at the University of California San Diego, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/06/21/us/underwater-noise-search-submersible.html">according</a> to The New York Times. 
Matthew Schanck, the founder of maritime search and rescue organization Marsar International, <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-12226303/What-banging-sound-heard-Titan-rescue-bid.html">told</a> The Daily Mail that the noises could have come from multiple sources, but he said there is a high probability they were caused by search vessels. 
“Our understanding is the noise could have a number of sources,” he said. “The subsurface of the ocean is a noisy environment. But given the high density of vessels in the area operating their propulsion systems and heavy machinery/equipment in the area, this may have been picked up by sonobuoys.”

As the search continued earlier this week, Jeff Karson, professor of earth and environmental sciences at Syracuse University, warned that focusing on the banging sounds as evidence that the five passengers could still be alive was “wishful thinking.” Karson said that the sound likely just came from junk in the ocean and possibly Titanic wreckage, which is <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/titanic-decaying-expedition/">constantly decaying </a>and falling to the ocean floor.

The professor also explained that sounds coming from the ocean, especially from an area near a shipwreck, could be complicated by echoes. 
“One possibility is that the sounds [are] bouncing around the debris. And so it&#8217;s a more complicated echo. It&#8217;s just not bouncing off of one thing. It&#8217;s bouncing off a bunch of things. And it&#8217;s like, you know, dropping up a marble into a tin can. It&#8217;s rattling around and that would confuse the location,” Karson <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12220611/Sonar-expert-says-banging-heard-sub-search-site-debris-falling-decaying-wreck.html">said</a>.
“Is it really banging or just some unidentified sound? I think that is a more accurate description right now,” he added. “There&#8217;s no telling where the sound is coming from or how far away it is.”
Dr. Jamie Pringle, reader in Forensic Geosciences at Keele University, was skeptical that the noises picked up by the sonobuoys came from the Titanic, however. 
“Noise from the Titanic wreck at that water depth would also be unlikely to travel to the surface,” he said. 
<h2>Marine Life</h2>
Another possibility is that the underwater noises picked up came from the variety of sea creatures living in the Atlantic, such as whales. 
Dolphins usually make high-frequency sounds like whistles that are used for echolocation, but whales can make noises that are lower frequency. While the recordings picked up what sounds like something clanking against metal in 30-minute intervals, pointing to a man-made source, Carl Hartsfield, a laboratory director at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/06/21/us/underwater-noise-search-submersible.html">said</a> it’s a little more complicated than that. 
“From my experience with acoustics, there are sounds by biologics that sound man-made to the untrained ear,” he said. “But I can assure you that the people listening to these tapes are trained.”
The U.S. Coast Guard is still investigating the circumstances surrounding the Titan implosion as questions are likely to swirl for weeks. 
&#8220;This was an incredibly complex case and we&#8217;re still working to develop details for the timeline involved with this casualty and the response,” Coast Guard Rear Adm. John Mauger <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/US/probe-seeks-answers-titanic-sub-catastrophic-implosion/story?id=100316037">said</a>. 
Two ROVs, one from France and one from Canada, will continue mapping debris fields at the site of the disaster. The admiral said the Coast Guard, along with the French and Canadian governments, will continue to seek answers on &#8220;how, why, and when this happened.&#8221;

The oxygen supply on the submersible, which aimed to see the wreckage of the Titanic, was projected to run out early on Thursday, although officials <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/live/2023/06/22/us/titanic-missing-submarine" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> that the crew&#8217;s desire to live could prolong the timeline if those inside stayed calm and avoided panicked breathing.
Dr. Simon Boxall, who teaches oceanography at England’s University of Southampton, told NBC News, “There are so many variables. We have no idea how long they will actually last in terms of oxygen — all that we know is that it’s imminent.”
Boxall explained that the passengers on board could start to suffer hypothermia, adding that could mean “they’re using a lot less oxygen,” although that could present other dangers.
Nikolas Xiros, professor of naval architecture and marine engineering at the University of New Orleans, said it was likely the sub had lost power, warning that the temperatures inside could be at the freezing point. “If a lack of oxygen doesn’t get them, what’s going to get them is going to be hypothermia,” he told USA Today.
OceanGate Expeditions, the company responsible for the Titan, reportedly took eight hours to alert the Coast Guard that they had lost contact with the submersible on Sunday. The sub lies roughly 400 miles southeast of St. John’s, Newfoundland.
The sub had been in contact with the mothership, the Polar Prince when it started its dive at 8 a.m. Sunday morning, but lost contact at 9:45 a.m. The Daily Mail reported that the sub wasn’t reported missing to the U.S. Coast Guard until 5:40 p.m., eight hours later, and Canada’s Coast Guard wasn’t alerted until 9:13 p.m. on Sunday night.

OceanGate offers people a chance to visit the Titanic wreckage for $250,000. The company says its Titan submersible weighs 23,000 pounds and can dive nearly 2.5 miles underwater, which is about the depth of the Titanic&#8217;s wreckage on the floor of the Atlantic Ocean about 370 miles off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada.
A 2022 <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/titanic-visiting-the-most-famous-shipwreck-in-the-world/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">report by CBS correspondent David Pogue</a> said the Titan&#8217;s hatch is sealed by an external crew with 17 bolts, and that is the only way out. The report also noted that the submersible lacks underwater GPS but rather is guided by text messages from the surface ship.

The five-person crew that vanished is <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/more-passengers-on-board-missing-titanic-sub-identified" target="_blank" rel="noopener">believed to include</a> billionaire explorer <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/intrepid-explorer-believed-to-be-aboard-missing-titanic-tourist-sub" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hamish Harding</a>, French explorer Paul-Henri Nargeolet, and businessman Shahzada Dawood and his son, Suleman, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/06/19/us/missing-submarine-titanic-who-is-on.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to The New York Times</a>. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/more-passengers-on-board-missing-titanic-sub-identified" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Daily Mail reports</a> OceanGate founder and CEO Stockton Rush is the fifth person aboard the submersible.
&#8220;Our entire focus is on the crew members in the submersible and their families, we are deeply thankful for the extensive assistance we have received from several government agencies and deep sea companies in our efforts to reestablish contact with the submersible,&#8221; OceanGate said in a statement on Monday.
