Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) came up with a new reason why she took a DNA test during a debate for her Senate seat on Sunday night: to help rebuild trust in the U.S. government.
Warren’s claim comes after she was widely mocked by many in the media and President Donald Trump following the release of her DNA test results last week, which showed that she was overwhelmingly of European descent, but suggested the possibility that she might be between 1/64th and 1/1024th Mexican, Colombian, or Peruvian.
“Senator, when we spoke in March for an interview and I asked you about whether or not you would take a DNA test, you told me that you believed that the issue of your Native American heritage had been settled,” the moderator said. “Why did you change your mind and recently release the results of the DNA test?”
“You know, one of the things I see now is that confidence in government is at an all-time low,” Warren responded. “And I believe one way that we try to rebuild confidence is through transparency.”
“So I’ve really made an effort over the past several months,” Warren continued, highlighting different things that she claims she has done to become more transparent.
“And yeah, ultimately I took a DNA test, because I am an open book,” Warren claimed, willfully ignoring years of inquiry into her ancestry from the media.
Warren then claimed that “at the end of the day, this isn’t about me.”
