Ohio Senator and Republican vice presidential candidate J.D. Vance told a story on Friday about witnessing first-hand one of the frightening effects of the border crisis.

Vance made the comments while giving a speech in Portage, Michigan, where he urged supporters to show up to vote for former President Donald Trump. During his speech, Vance described what he called a “profound” experience he had earlier this year while campaigning in Valdosta, Georgia.

“One of the most profound and scary things that I’ve ever seen happened on the campaign trail. I was in a place called Valdosta, Georgia,” he said. “And I was taken by the local sheriffs, the local law enforcement, into what they call the interdiction room.”

Vance described seeing bags of marijuana, pills, cocaine, meth, and stacks of illegal guns.

“One of the main businesses of the Mexican drug cartels is to bring illegal guns into our country,” Vance noted, saying that there was a “stark choice” with how Vice President Kamala Harris treated border security while supporting domestic policies that ban American citizens from owning certain guns.

“Donald Trump wants to empower you to exercise your Second Amendment rights and he wants to go after the illegal gun running of the Mexican drug cartels,” Vance said.

But what he said stood out most for him was seeing drug-laced candy that Valdosta law enforcement had confiscated.

“On the table in front of me there is a box of candy, like Nerds, Sour Patch candies,” Vance said. “Because what the Mexican drug cartels have figured out is that they disguise refined THC and fentanyl as childhood candy, they make it easier to get into our country. They make it easier to traffic into the United States of America.”

Vance said that parents around the country had told him about losing children because of the deadly drugs that have been smuggled over the border.

The stop was part of a final swing for the Trump-Vance campaign as Election Day nears. Polls show a close race between Trump and Harris in Michigan, one of the many battlegrounds that proved crucial in both 2016 and 2020.

On Friday, Vance told people to ignore the polls and go out to vote.

“In 2022, Marist had my Ohio Senate race tied. I won by more than 6,” he posted on X. “Stop worrying about polls and go get people to the polls. I am 100 percent sure we have the electorate we need to win. What we need is to work hard over the next 4 days.”

Trump, who also rallied in Michigan on Friday, is expected to return to the state on Monday for a final rally in Grand Rapids. Harris will also visit Michigan on Sunday for her last event in the state before the election.
