ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA — Bishop Michael Burbidge is aware that a good percentage of the 432,700 Catholics in his flock are politically important.
“One of the first shocks I experienced when I became the Bishop of Arlington was being in this office and looking out and seeing the Capitol and the Washington Monument from my window,” Burbidge told The Daily Wire in a recent interview. “There are some heavy hitters here who are influencing our country&#8217;s politics.”
For about two years, those heavy hitters included Vice President JD Vance, who, as a first-term senator from Ohio, settled his family in Northern Virginia. Vance’s Catholicism has been a central part of his identity since his <a href="https://www.theamericanconservative.com/j-d-vance-becomes-catholic/">2019 baptism</a> — back when he was still just “the author of ‘Hillbilly Elegy’” and a promising young man.
Vance, who tells the story of his faith journey in a forthcoming book, <a href="https://www.harpercollins.com/products/communion-j-d-vance?variant=45116963192866">“Communion,”</a> may have broken the land speed record for transition from catechumen to prominent Catholic. By the time Donald Trump asked him to join the presidential ticket, he was one of the most well-known American Catholics, second only to the man he and Trump were running to succeed.
Once in office, Vance became the locus for Catholic critiques of the Trump administration’s <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/pope-leo-addresses-narrative-suggesting-he-and-trump-are-at-war">foreign policy</a> and <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/hours-before-zelensky-meeting-vance-praises-trump-for-pursuing-a-path-of-peace">immigration crackdown</a> — which earned the White House rebukes from Pope Francis and now Pope Leo XIV, whose elevation to the Throne of St. Peter moved Vance a few notches down the list of prominent American Catholics.
Burbidge knows all of this. He’s met Vance, he says, but hasn&#8217;t had a formal meeting with him since he became vice president. And Burbidge realizes the vice president has a particular challenge before him, not just as a Catholic leader, but one with a countryman in Rome. But the bishop — who <a href="https://www.arlingtondiocese.org/2025/01/31/a-pastoral-statement-on-the-catholic-imperative-of-upholding-human-dignity-and-the-common-good-in-american-immigration-law/">encouraged</a> Trump and Vance in January 2025 to “develop a national immigration policy that reflects the Catholic commitment to human dignity and the common good” — stressed that Vance has all the tools he needs to navigate choppy theological-political waters.
“We have a mandate to be not only citizens, but to be faithful citizens,” Burbidge says. “You can&#8217;t separate what you know to be true and what you profess to believe into your life as a politician. And will you have to pay a price for that sometimes? Of course you will. Will you maybe be rejected by others? Of course you will. But there&#8217;s no other path.”
“This is what&#8217;s so great about being Catholic,” the bishop adds. “There&#8217;s a consistency of the gospel of life and the truth.”
“Now, does this become more challenging for a politician? I&#8217;m sure it does. But you can&#8217;t be one person here and another person here.”
A Philadelphia native ordained in 1984, Burbidge began his episcopal journey as the auxiliary bishop of his hometown in 2002. Named bishop of Raleigh in 2006 by Pope Benedict XVI, he held that post for a decade before Pope Francis named him the fourth bishop of Arlington. It’s a role to which Burbidge — a polished speaker unafraid to preach the “gospel of life” to all manner of politicians — seems uniquely suited.
“It really doesn&#8217;t matter who&#8217;s in office,” Burbidge says when asked how he’s navigated the transition from President Joe Biden, a Catholic who flouted the Church’s teaching on abortion, to Trump and Vance, whose paeans to the faith have not kept them out of the fray.
“It&#8217;s always going to be a challenge, because [the Catholic Church is] so beautiful, the way we teach the gospel of life. It confuses people that we can be on this side or that side, but the truth of the gospel, what we&#8217;re teaching doesn&#8217;t change because of who&#8217;s in office.”
The bishop certainly practices what he’s preaching here. Burbidge issued his statement on immigration less than two weeks after Inauguration Day, reminding the Trump team of the Church’s stance before it had finished unpacking.
Burbidge had plenty of practice dealing with politicians by this point. From 2022 to 2024, he chaired the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Pro-Life Activities Committee. In that role, he <a href="https://catholicvote.org/bishop-of-arlington-calls-president-biden-to-repent/">chastised Biden</a> for “causing great scandal when he announces both his faith and his pro-abortion position publicly,” calling on the president to “repent.”
Still, Burbidge goes out of his way to stress that his role is no different than that of other bishops. He does not tell his priests to preach to the powerful in the pews and thinks there “should be no effort at all” for priests to do that.
For all that’s happening in the American church, Burbidge is most excited about the things that get bishops excited: seven ordinations this year and 12 in 2025; 39 active seminarians; mass attendance rebounding to pre-COVID numbers; 27 George Mason students brought into the church this Easter alone, the work of just one campus priest.
“We have so many young adults who are fully engaged in the life of the church,” Burbidge says. “We are very, very blessed with vocations … and we have so many beautiful holy families, holy marriages, from which vocations so often come.”
With a flourishing diocese and rising levels of religiosity among young Americans, Burbidge is optimistic about the future of the country and the church. And he sees even more reason for hope in Pope Leo, whom he praises for “the serenity and the simplicity and the joy” he has projected in his first year as pontiff.
“I think it was a blessing, a gift, that he knows the United States,” Burbidge says. “He&#8217;s lived here, he&#8217;s from here. He speaks the language. He gets us, and I think he understands us, in our politics and our culture and things like that.”
One might say it’s providential, the ascension of an American pope at the dawn of a very Catholic age in American politics. Abortion and immigration, the twin issues of our time, make it clear that Catholic social teaching does not cleave easily along party lines. And yet, the days of Catholics sidestepping politics seem to be over.
The Republican nominee for president in 2028 will almost certainly be Vance or Secretary of State Marco Rubio, both Catholics. And at least two Democratic frontrunners — California Governor Gavin Newsom and New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez — are proximately Catholic as well. Our nation’s next presidential election may not just be a referendum on competing political systems, but competing conceptions of Catholicism.
Regardless of whether that happens, American Catholics will certainly be glad to have one of their own leading the church in the coming years. But perhaps they’ll also look to a prelate just two years younger than Pope Leo, another son of a great American city whose ordination came almost two years to the day of the Holy Father’s.
“As a bishop, I have to have full responsibility for every soul entrusted to me,” Burbidge says. “And therefore, I have to speak truth and love, and love involves speaking the truth.”
“So, I think that if you&#8217;re a Catholic and you&#8217;re running for office, your bishop&#8217;s going to be talking to you.”

The FBI arrested a Somali-born man accused of stealing $4 million from a federal food program for children in need through his participation in the nation’s largest COVID-era scam. 
FBI Director Kash Patel announced Wednesday that 47-year-old <a href="https://www.fbi.gov/wanted/most-wanted-fraudsters/said-abdullahi-ereg">Said Abdullahi Ereg</a> surrendered to federal authorities after being wanted since 2024 on fraud charges. Ereg was placed on the “Most Wanted Fraudsters” last week over his alleged involvement in the massive $250 million Feeding Our Future scam.
“When [Vice President] Vance led the way for the Most Wanted Fraudsters list through the [White House Fraud Task Force] — this was exactly the righteous goal the Task Force had in mind — to bring to justice all those who have stolen money from hardworking American taxpayers,” Patel said. “This historic result is only the beginning — and let it be a message to any fraudster who takes advantage of America, this team will find you.”
The FBI said that Ereg took $4.2 million in government payments to his Minneapolis-based grocery and deli to supposedly provide meals through the Federal Child Nutrition Program between April 2020 and April 2021. Ereg&#8217;s grocery was sponsored by the fraudulent Feeding Our Future program. 
“Ereg allegedly transferred most of the money to fund his family&#8217;s lavish lifestyle,&#8221; the FBI said. &#8220;He also allegedly transferred money to foreign accounts controlled by foreign companies.&#8221;
Ereg’s grocery store purported to serve “3,000 meals, twice a day, seven days a week” but in actuality only served a “fraction of those meals,” according to prosecutors. In total, he claimed to have served 1.4 million meals to children. 
The money was instead used for purchases of high-end brands like Burberry, Louis Vuitton, and Canada Goose and sent to a foreign textile company, according to the indictment. Ereg transferred some $2.5 million funds received from government payouts to foreign accounts controlled by foreign companies, prosecutors said. 
Hundreds of thousands of dollars went toward the purchase of a home in New Hope, Minnesota, and the Somali-founded Quick Chain Trading Company and the Chinese-based Shaoxing Aifan Textile Company, according to the indictment. 
The suspected fraudster faces charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud, and money laundering. The criminal proceedings for Ereg will take place in federal court in Minnesota. 
Aimee Bock, the founder of Feeding Our Future, was sentenced last month to 500 months in prison for her role in the exploitation of the child nutrition program during COVID. She and others created dozens of shell companies to funnel federal dollars that were supposed to go toward feeding kids. 
Under the direction of Vice President JD Vance, the Trump administration is focusing on cracking down on fraud. Federal officials are investigating in Ohio after The Daily Wire <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/medicaid-millionaires-how-the-feds-pay-immigrants-billions-to-hang-out-with-their-families">reported</a> on the state’s questionable payments for a taxpayer funded home healthcare program.

Feds Arrest ‘Most Wanted Fraudster’ Accused Of Using Taxpayer Dollars For ‘Lavish Lifestyle’

Vice President JD Vance tasked the Justice Department with probing accusations that Minnesota Democratic Governor Tim Walz looked the other way while fraudsters bilked the state’s social services for upwards of $9 billion. 
Vance referred the Walz administration to the DOJ on Monday night after the House Oversight Committee released a <a href="https://oversight.house.gov/release/oversight-committee-releases-bombshell-report-exposing-rampant-fraud-plaguing-minnesotas-taxpayer-funded-social-programs/">lengthy report</a> accusing Walz and Minnesota Democratic Attorney General Keith Ellison of allowing their state to be systematically defrauded. The committee also accused Walz of targeting whistleblowers who tried to warn state officials about vulnerabilities in the system. 
“I’ve referred these allegations to DOJ’s new Fraud Division for criminal investigation,” Vance <a href="https://x.com/JDVance/status/2064146608518746499/photo/2">announced</a> on X. “Minnesota state officials are not above the law, and if they facilitated fraud, lied under oath about what they knew, or harassed and [intimidated] whistleblowers, they must face justice.”
Leading the Trump administration’s efforts to crack down on fraud, Vance sent the referral to Assistant Attorney General Colin McDonald, the head of the newly established National Fraud Enforcement Division. 
The 200-page report from the House Oversight Committee said that the Walz administration’s lax efforts to combat fraud led to $300 million in federal child nutrition aid being lost and put up to $9 billion in Medicaid-related funds in jeopardy. 
The committee said that Walz and Ellison were aware of major flaws in Minnesota’s administration of welfare benefits since 2019, but took no corrective action. Instead, Walz’s administration took action to target whistleblowers, the House report said. 
“If state officials in Minnesota or anywhere else in the country facilitated fraud or looked the other way while this theft was happening, if they actively prevented state and federal officials from stopping fraud and bringing fraudsters to justice, or if they intimidate and harassed whistleblowers who courageously tried to shine a light on the problem, they must be held accountable,” Vance wrote to McDonald. 
The Trump administration has focused on Minnesota in its anti-fraud crackdown. The White House shut down federal assistance payments to the state after independent journalist Nick Shirley published multiple videos showing apparent widespread fraud at so-called daycare centers. 
The administration is also taking action in Vance’s home state of Ohio after The Daily Wire <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/medicaid-millionaires">reported</a> on Ohio’s administration of funds to questionable businesses that claim to administer home healthcare.

For the first time ever, the Naval Observatory is hosting a chicken coop on its grounds, The Daily Wire can first report. Built by family-owned Carolina Coops, the Vance&#8217;s new addition was designed to match the architectural themes of the historic vice presidential residence. The coop was built at no cost to the American taxpayer, a source familiar with the project noted.
Matt and Gnon DuBoise founded Carolina Coops in 2008, with the goal of building &#8220;coops that are as functional as they are beautiful.&#8221; The company and its founders have become minor social media sensations, particularly on YouTube, where Matt shares parenting advice, coop design insights, and expounds on the benefits of raising chickens.
“Seeing our work become part of a historic residence like the Naval Observatory is a milestone I will never forget,&#8221; DuBoise told The Daily Wire. &#8220;As a small business owner, this is a true &#8216;American dream&#8217; moment for me and my family.&#8221;

WASHINGTON — Former Vice President Kamala Harris removed a historic bust of Christopher Columbus from her office while she served under Joe Biden&#8217;s administration. Under Vice President JD Vance, The Daily Wire has learned, the bust has since been brought back.
“Restoring this piece of history to the Vice President’s office is one of many actions taken by the Trump Administration to honor Christopher Columbus’s contribution to Western exploration,&#8221; a spokesperson for the vice president told The Daily Wire.
&#8220;Unlike Kamala Harris, Vice President Vance is committed to respecting our national heritage and restoring our monuments.”
Members of the USS Montgomery removed the Christopher Columbus bust from the Spanish fleet in 1898 during the Spanish-American War and gifted it to the Secretary of the Navy, a source familiar with the matter shared with The Daily Wire.

The bust remained on display in the Secretary of the Navy&#8217;s office through 1921, when the office was converted into the Army Chief of Staff&#8217;s office and later became the Vice President&#8217;s Ceremonial Office. That office has been occupied by a vice president since Lyndon B. Johnson.
Harris, who <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/editorials/3190286/what-voters-learned-about-each-party-on-columbus-day/">supported efforts to replace Columbus Day</a> with &#8220;Indigenous Peoples&#8217; Day,&#8221; had the bust removed and moved to an unknown location, the source familiar said.
“Since 1934, every October, the United States has recognized the voyage of the European explorers who first landed on the shores of the Americas. Those explorers ushered in a wave of devastation for tribal nations — perpetrating violence, stealing land, and spreading disease,&#8221; she said in 2021.
&#8220;We must not shy away from this shameful past, and we must shed light on it and do everything we can to address the impact of the past on Native communities today.”
A spokesperson for Harris did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
News of the bust&#8217;s reinstatement comes amid a strong push by President Donald Trump&#8217;s administration to celebrate Columbus, who famously explored the Americas. Democrat lawmakers and leftist activists have demeaned Columbus in recent years, displacing Columbus Day and accusing him of genocide against Native Americans.
Trump has pushed back with aggressive pro-Columbus messaging, leaning into memes from the acclaimed television series &#8220;The Sopranos,&#8221; in which fictional mafia boss Tony Soprano warns his son: &#8220;In this house, Christopher Columbus is a hero.&#8221;
&#8220;I’m bringing Columbus Day back from the ashes,&#8221; Trump said in an April 2025 Truth Social post. &#8220;The Democrats did everything possible to destroy Christopher Columbus, his reputation, and all of the Italians that love him so much.&#8221;

&#8220;They tore down his Statues, and put up nothing but &#8216;WOKE,&#8217; or even worse, nothing at all,&#8221; the president said. &#8220;Well, you’ll be happy to know, Christopher is going to make a major comeback. I am hereby reinstating Columbus Day under the same rules, dates, and locations, as it has had for all of the many decades before!&#8221;
Six years after vandals toppled a Baltimore-based statue of Columbus and tossed it into the city&#8217;s inner harbor, Trump <a href="https://www.wmar2news.com/news/region/baltimore-city/columbus-statue-once-tossed-into-baltimores-inner-harbor-resurfaces-at-white-house#google_vignette" target="_blank" rel="noopener">had the statue restored</a> and placed in the White House&#8217;s &#8220;Garden of Heroes.&#8221; The president <a href="https://x.com/Interior/status/2060054931097199067?s=20">also led the charge</a> in restoring the Columbus Circle fountain at Union Station in Washington, D.C.
Vance himself has slammed Indigenous Peoples&#8217; Day as a &#8220;fake holiday&#8221; and praised Columbus for using &#8220;technology developed in Europe to sail across a giant ocean and discover a new continent.&#8221;
“&#8217;Indigenous Peoples’ Day&#8217; is a fake holiday created to sow division,” Vance wrote on social media in 2021. “Of course, Joe Biden is the first president to pay it any attention.”
The vice president and his wife lived in Columbus, Ohio, for a time, and Vance attended The Ohio State University there. According to photos shared with The Daily Wire, the vice president also recently added a model of the USS Ohio to the Ceremonial Office, in addition to the bust.

Vice President JD Vance said Thursday that the Trump administration would not rest until “justice is served” to those defrauding the American taxpayer through government welfare programs.

Fraud in Minnesota has received widespread attention after independent journalist Nick Shirley took a camera to questionable entities raking in taxpayer dollars and asked about their operations. 
“Our message is simple: if you were committing fraud, our task force will find you. We&#8217;ll come after you, and we will not rest until justice is served,” Vance said in a video message. “Don&#8217;t defraud the American taxpayer. Don&#8217;t get rich by trying to steal from them, or we are going to come after you until justice is served. That&#8217;s our promise, and we&#8217;re going to stick to it.”

Vance, heading up the Trump administration’s anti-fraud task force, said that the charges announced Thursday included two of the largest Medicaid fraud cases in Minnesota history and the largest autism fraud case ever brought by the federal government. 
“With this action, we&#8217;re bringing justice to some of America&#8217;s most vulnerable citizens and justice to the American taxpayer,” he said. 
Medicaid fraud has come under heavy scrutiny from Republican officials in recent weeks after Daily Wire investigative reporter Luke Rosiak <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/medicaid-millionaires">published a series</a> documenting how Ohio spent a billion dollars on home healthcare in 2024. The home healthcare services included activities such as “homemaking” and “chores” for family members. 
The report found that just seven buildings in Columbus housed 288 home healthcare businesses that billed taxpayers more than $250 million. State officials appear to do little vetting for the so-called home healthcare companies. Vance has warned that states that do not combat fraud could lose their Medicaid funding. 
The vice president noted that one of the cases brought Thursday involved a defendant accused of billing Medicaid for around-the-clock care for a disabled man who was later found dead after receiving no actual services.
“To get rich off taxpayers, even at the cost of others&#8217; lives, just as that fraudster had for many months before. This kind of behavior is sickening,” Vance said. 
Aimee Bock, the founder of the nonprofit Feeding Our Future, was sentenced to nearly 42 years in prison on Thursday over a $250 million fraud case involving meals supposedly given to children during the COVID pandemic.

The Justice Department is actively investigating Somali-born Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) for immigration fraud over allegations that she married her brother, Vice President JD Vance said on Tuesday.
Vance, who is leading President Donald Trump’s crackdown on fraud, was answering a question from Daily Caller White House reporter Reagan Reese, who asked about a possible indictment against Omar.
&#8220;I don&#8217;t want to prejudge an investigation. I mean, you read the things about Ilhan Omar and about who she married and whether she didn&#8217;t marry this person or that person. It certainly seems like something fishy is there,&#8221; Vance said during a White House press conference.
“If we think that there’s a crime, we’re going to prosecute that crime, and that’s something the Department of Justice is looking at right now,” he said.
Omar is accused of marrying her brother in order for him to secure a green card.
President Donald Trump himself has advocated for the Minnesota lawmaker to be &#8220;thrown out of the country.&#8221;
The federal government can denaturalize foreign-born individuals if they commit fraud as part of the immigration process, though the Justice Department has not publicly confirmed Vance&#8217;s claim that it is investigating Omar.
Omar came to the United States as a refugee in 1995 and secured her citizenship in 2000 at 17 years old.
Omar married British citizen Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, whom some allege is her biological brother, in 2009. The pair reportedly separated in 2011 and divorced in 2017.
It was Omar&#8217;s second marriage.
Omar married Ahmed Hirsi in a religious ceremony in 2002, but the union was never legally recognized.
She claimed to have split from Hirsi in 2008. The couple reconciled just months after Omar&#8217;s split from Elmi.
Omar has called allegations that she married her brother &#8220;absurd and offensive.&#8221;
A spokesperson for Omar didn&#8217;t immediately respond to a request for comment on Vance&#8217;s announcement.
In March, Vance said Omar “definitely committed immigration fraud against the United States of America” and said that the Trump administration intended to “go after her.”
“We actually think that Ilhan Omar definitely committed immigration fraud against the United States of America,” Vance said at the time. “And I talked to [Trump adviser] Stephen Miller about this recently, we’re trying to look at what the remedies are.”
“What are the legal remedies now that we know she’s committed immigration fraud? How do you go after her? How do you investigate her? How do you build the case necessary to get some justice for the American people?” Vance added.
The vice president also said that a spotlight is on Omar for her alleged ties to “a lot of the worst fraudsters in the Somali community” in Minneapolis.

Vice President JD Vance unveiled what could become the Trump administration&#8217;s midterm messaging on Thursday as he took shots at Maine Democrats and touted the wins of the White House Anti-Fraud Task Force.
Speaking to an enthusiastic crowd in Bangor, Maine, Vance accused Democrats of refusing to cooperate with efforts to crack down on abuse and corruption.
“What I find so preposterous about Maine—it&#8217;s not just that we&#8217;ve found tens of millions of dollars of fraud in a relatively small state, it&#8217;s that we&#8217;ve had no cooperation from the state government,&#8221; Vance said.
Vance specifically called out the state&#8217;s Democratic Gov. Janet Mills, saying her political career had been ruined by her eagerness to defend transgender ideology, and urging her to cooperate with the task force on targeting fraud before her tenure is up.
“I would love to work with the governor of Maine to stop the fraud that&#8217;s being perpetrated in this state,&#8221; Vance said. &#8220;This should not be a red or blue state issue. This isn’t Republican or Democrat. This is common sense. This is protecting every person in this room from being defrauded by their own government.”
It was the vice president&#8217;s first trip to tout his Anti-Fraud Task Force, and Vance leaned heavily into that fraud messaging.
&#8220;Because you all work hard, because you all pay your taxes, because you do things the right way, it is time to have leadership in Washington that treats you the right way and protects those hard-earned tax dollars,&#8221; the vice president said. “For the first time in a very long time, you&#8217;ve got an administration in Washington, DC that is fighting for you, fighting to protect your tax dollars, and fighting to put the fraudsters in prison.”
As an example of this fraud the administration has uncovered, Vance pointed to the case of 30-year-old Rakiya Mohamed, who pleaded guilty in early March to filing false tax returns for 2018 and 2019 and interfering with the administration of federal tax laws. 
Mohamed owned a language interpretation business called Reliable Language Resources, but according to the vice president, she wasn&#8217;t doing any interpreting.

&#8220;This woman, her name was Rakiya Mohamed. It turns out that Rakiya Mohamed was not a particularly upstanding citizen,&#8221; said the vice president. &#8220;So while she said that she was providing interpretation services, do you know what she was actually doing? Providing zero services and collecting $15 million over a five-year period that was going directly into her pocket.&#8221; 
&#8220;That happened pretty much during the entirety of the Biden administration and no one in the Biden administration thought to step in and stop this ridiculous fraud,&#8221; he added. 
Vance went on to link the Trump administration&#8217;s anti-fraud message to its immigration agenda.
&#8220;Call me crazy, but I think that when we welcome new immigrants to the United States of America, they should be people who enrich our country and bring some good skills into the country, not a person who is gonna steal $15 million from the people in this room,&#8221; Vance said.

&#8220;Every single day I learn of something new,&#8221; Vance shared. &#8220;I learn about people who say that they’re claiming for hospice services, but in fact, they’re not providing any services and they’re making hundreds of millions or billions of dollars in the process.&#8221;
On Wednesday, Vance announced that the Trump administration would cut off certain federal anti-fraud funding to states that don&#8217;t aggressively investigate Medicaid abuse, escalating the White House&#8217;s anti-fraud measures.
“Vice President Vance’s Task Force to Eliminate Fraud continues to produce results for the American people,&#8221; a Vance spokesperson told The Daily Wire. &#8220;In just two months, the task force has exposed billions of dollars in fraud and worked with law enforcement agencies to ensure that fraudsters are brought to justice. After a bombshell Daily Wire investigation into waste, fraud, and abuse tied to the government-funded home health care industry, the Trump administration moved on Wednesday to freeze over a billion dollars’ worth of spending and is warning states to root out fraud or pay the price.
The White House fraud task force <a href="https://www.reuters.com/legal/litigation/us-halting-medicare-enrollments-new-home-healthcare-hospice-providers-2026-05-13/">announced</a> on Wednesday morning that not a single new home health care company would be enrolled in Medicare while the Trump administration probes the program. Around <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/vance-led-task-force-cuts-home-health-hospice-providers-suspected-fraud.amp">$1.4 billion</a> in funding for home health care and hospice providers has been paused. 
“Widespread fraud has gone on for far too ​long. But under the Vice President&#8217;s task force we are finally putting a stop to the massive scale fraudsters ripping off the ​American people once and for all,” said a spokesman for Vice President JD Vance. 
 The announcement comes days after Daily Wire reporter Luke Rosiak <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/medicaid-millionaires-how-the-feds-pay-immigrants-billions-to-hang-out-with-their-families">published a series of stories</a> documenting how Ohio spent a billion dollars on home health care in 2024. Home health care services can include things like doing “homemaking” and “chores” for family members. 
Vance, who runs the fraud task force, is set to warn states to crack down on fraud or risk losing federal Medicaid funding, the Wall Street Journal <a href="https://www.wsj.com/politics/policy/trump-jd-vance-medicaid-fraud-40e9e78e">reported</a>. The federal government provides over 60% of Medicaid funding for most states, and the Trump administration is expected to start an audit on Wednesday of state Medicaid Fraud Control Units to ensure they are doing enough to combat fraud.

“Your failure to do your job,” Department of Health and Human Services Inspector General Thomas Bell wrote in a letter to the states, “has put all of your state’s Medicaid funds in jeopardy.”
The plan was developed by Vance and Federal Trade Commission Chair Andrew Ferguson, who is working with Vance on the task force.
&#8220;The American taxpayer is tired of states receiving billions of dollars to police fraud and elder abuse and instead using that money for no-show jobs,&#8221; FTC director of public affairs Joe Simonson <a href="https://x.com/SaysSimonson/status/2054564421951795308">said</a>. &#8220;We cannot have a country with entitlements built on fraud and theft. Our most vulnerable are suffering.&#8221;
Vance vowed to investigate home health care in response to The Daily Wire’s “Medicaid Millions” series on Ohio, which <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/inside-ohios-home-health-empire-7-buildings-288-medicaid-companies-250-million">showed</a> that just seven buildings in Columbus housed 288 home health care businesses that billed taxpayers more than $250 million. Columbus is home to one of the largest African immigrant populations in the country.
“These shocking allegations, if true, show why the Fraud Task Force’s work is so important. I’m directing the task force to look into it and take immediate action to prosecute any fraudsters involved and stop all further payments as appropriate,” he posted, sharing a thread from Rosiak detailing the uncovered fraud.
During the pause of new approvals of home health care and hospices funded by Medicare, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services will audit the home health care system, which is fully funded and administered by the federal government. States with funding from both the federal government and the states administer the Medicaid home health program. 
On Tuesday, the House Oversight Committee <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/house-gop-launches-new-task-force-probes-alleged-250b-medicaid-fraud-ohio">tasked</a> Rep. Brandon Gill (R-TX) with leading a new task force on Defending Constitutional Rights and Exposing Institutional Abuses. Gill will focus the task force’s efforts on investigating home health care and Medicaid in Ohio in the wake of The Daily Wire&#8217;s reporting. 
“The reports of Ohio’s Medicaid fraud scandal are appalling — and we’re just uncovering the tip of the iceberg of the fraud and swindling of millions of American dollars,&#8221; Gill told The Daily Wire. &#8220;My Task Force is demanding answers and transparency from the Director of the Ohio Department of Medicaid, as we will continue to press those who need to account for their abuse of American taxpayers.”

A new poll shows Secretary of State Marco Rubio leading a hypothetical 2028 Republican presidential primary to succeed President Donald Trump.
The survey, <a href="///Users/jacobwheeler/Downloads/Atlas%20Poll%20USA%20-%2005.07.2026%20-%20Google%20Slides.pdf">conducted by AtlasIntel</a> between May 4-7 among 2,069 American adults, found Rubio with 45.4% support, followed by Vice President JD Vance at 29.6%. 
The rest of the field trailed significantly.

Rubio and Vance are widely seen as the most serious contenders to succeed Trump and shape the future of the MAGA movement.

Rubio said last year that he would support Vance if the vice president decided to run for president.

President Donald Trump polled a crowd at the White House on Monday, asking if they would like to see Vice President JD Vance or Secretary of State Marco Rubio run for president in 2028. 
“I don&#8217;t know. Who&#8217;s it going to be? Is it going to be JD? Is there going to be somebody else? I don&#8217;t know,” Trump told a group of law enforcement officials at the White House on Monday. 
He then asked the crowd who they thought should succeed him. 
“Who likes JD Vance? Who likes Marco Rubio? All right. “Well, I think most likely, in all fairness,” Trump said when asked last August if MAGA would line up behind Vance in 2028. “He’s the vice president. I think Marco is also somebody that maybe would get together with JD in some form.”
Trump, however, did not fully endorse Vance at the time. 
“I also think we have incredible people, some of the people on the stage right here, so it’s too early obviously to talk about it,” he said. “But certainly, [Vance] is doing a great job, and he would be probably favored at this point.”

Vice President JD Vance said on Tuesday that uncovering fraud in the federal government was like “fishing in a barrel with dynamite.” His comment came after The Daily Wire <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/medicaid-millionaires-how-the-feds-pay-immigrants-billions-to-hang-out-with-their-families?author=Luke+Rosiak&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=1&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=DW+Investigation+Reveals+One+Of+The+Biggest+Government+Waste+Scandals+Hiding+In+Plain+Sight">reported</a> Monday that Ohio was doling out federal Medicaid dollars for people to spend time with their families. 
Vance, who is heading up the President Donald Trump’s Fraud Task Force, said he is surprised every week to find what kind of fraud his team was discovering. 
“Finding fraud in the federal government, it&#8217;s kind of like fishing in a barrel with dynamite. Every week, I get a report for the task force,” Vance said during an appearance in Iowa. “I am shocked every single day by the things that we find.”
Vance previously promised on Monday that the Fraud Task Force would dig into The Daily Wire’s reporting on Medicaid fraud in his home state. 
“These shocking allegations, if true, show why the Fraud Task Force’s work is so important. I’m directing the task force to look into it and take immediate action to prosecute any fraudsters involved and stop all further payments as appropriate,” he wrote on X, sharing a thread from Daily Wire investigative reporter Luke Rosiak detailing the uncovered fraud.
Rosiak reported Monday that Ohio spent a billion dollars on home health care in 2024, the last year for which data is available. What these funds went toward was difficult to verify because they often went toward “home health care” performed in private residences by family members of those getting the care.
During his speech in Iowa, Vance said that the Trump administration was working to go after the fraudsters who have grown rich by defrauding the American taxpayer. 
“We had let fraud become so rampant in this country that people were able to get rich, not by creating something amazing, not by employing something, not by building something beautiful with their hands,” Vance said. “They were able to get rich by defrauding every single person in this room.”
The vice president said Somali fraudsters in Minneapolis had taken advantage of a program intended to help autistic children and discussed rampant Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) waste uncovered by Agricultural Secretary Brooke Rollins. 
He said that Rollins had found 355,000 people receiving double SNAP benefits and 186,000 dead people on SNAP. 
“I actually think that we should take food stamps away from dead people,” Vance said. “I&#8217;m guilty of that. I think that&#8217;s a reasonable thing.”
The fight over SNAP fraud has now <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/no-more-food-stamps-for-millionaires-the-fight-over-snap-fraud-heads-to-the-states">headed to the states</a> where lawmakers are attempting to eliminate a loophole called broad-based categorical eligibility which allows people to qualify for SNAP without asset testing.
