There’s a new sheriff in town in Washtenaw County, Michigan, who is pushing for major changes to how the sheriff’s department enforces laws and policies that she says are important to protecting the environment. 
Sheriff Alyshia Dyer, a former deputy who became a social worker, is <a href="https://www.dyer2024.com/priorities" target="_blank" rel="noopener">focused</a> on protecting the community “from the negative environmental and human health impacts of pollution and climate change.” Dyer, a Democrat, was sworn in earlier this month, becoming Washtenaw County’s first female sheriff after she pulled out an upset victory in the Democratic Party primary in August and ran unopposed in the general election. 
In a phone interview with The Daily Wire, the new sheriff emphasized that under her leadership, the sheriff’s department will drastically change its outlook on environmental issues and said that she wants to implement an “Environmental Crimes Unit” in her first term, which would focus on looking into “air pollution, water contamination, and hazardous waste management.” 
“The sheriff’s office historically hasn’t been necessarily a strong champion in this work, but there’s no reason we can’t be,” Dyer said. 
Washtenaw County — which encompasses Ann Arbor, where the University of Michigan is located — had the <a href="https://witl.com/michigan-counties-with-the-most-crimes-committed/">10th highest</a> crime rate among Michigan counties in 2021, and in each of the following years, the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office <a href="https://www.washtenaw.org/3915/Sheriff-Data-Information-Dashboard" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> over 1,000 assault offenses, over 900 larceny/theft offenses, and more than 100 sex offenses. 
Dyer told The Daily Wire that bringing down violent crime in Washtenaw County is “connected” to fighting for environmental justice and prioritizing officers’ “mental health and wellness.&#8221; 
“It’s all connected. Looking at, number one, I talked a lot about officer mental health and wellness. Officers can’t effectively do their jobs if they’re not taking care of themselves. Looking at the environment, looking at corporate polluters, looking at the quality of life for residents, it has a really big impact on wellbeing.”
Dyer argued that it’s important for the sheriff’s department to focus on “creating better environments for the community.”

After publication, the Washtenaw County Sheriff&#8217;s Office sent a statement to The Daily Wire, reiterating its commitment to fighting violent crime and saying that &#8220;violent crime specialty units will remain, along with the implementation of investigative units to focus on corporate and environmental crime.&#8221;
Instituting environmental policies in the sheriff’s department would begin with reducing vehicle emissions from the department’s patrol car fleet, according to the new sheriff. To accomplish this, Dyer suggested placing new systems in patrol cars that cut back on gas or potentially moving to electric vehicles. 
“We have the largest fleet in the county,” Dyer said. “So we’re thinking about moving toward reducing vehicle emissions. There’s another sheriff’s office, I believe it was in Santa Barbara, California, and they put idling reduction systems in their cars, saved 260 gallons of gasoline. Also adding remote starters so deputies aren’t leaving their vehicles running all day, so it’s easy to turn them on and off — things like that.” 
Dyer said she plans to cut back on the number of patrol vehicles on the road and put two deputies in a patrol car instead of one, a move the sheriff said will help cut back on emissions. The main reason for pairing up deputies, according to Dyer, however, is to “help reduce vehicle crashes” and “lower stress” on officers who are currently working 16-hour shifts. In a statement to The Daily Wire after publication, the sheriff&#8217;s office said that deputies requested to be paired up in patrol vehicles. 
“The last thing I want is officers out here sleep-deprived with a gun, angry, driving around. No one wants that,” Dyer added.  
Asked if the sheriff’s department has any plan to hire more deputies, Dyer replied, “We do need to fill some spots because we are probably the shortest in road patrol that we have been in a very long time, which has created a lot of forced overtime, which has hurt morale, hurt staff, and in turn, has hurt the community.”
“We’re trying to get hiring up. It has been harder to hire in law enforcement because everyone is hiring,” the sheriff continued. “So that is something we’re definitely focused on.”  
Dyer <a href="https://www.dyer2024.com/priorities">wrote</a> on her campaign website that she will prioritize “diversity” and “inclusivity” in the hiring process. She lamented that “the Sheriff’s Office is predominantly male, white, and not representative of our LGBTQ+ population” and vowed to ensure “that hiring practices are inclusive.” 
The new sheriff will partner with a leftist prosecutor, Eli Savit, who was just re-elected after running unopposed, according to a <a href="https://boltsmag.org/a-michigan-sheriff-and-prosecutor-join-forces-to-implement-progressive-policy-washtenaw-county/">report</a> from Bolts. Savit was first elected to office in 2020 amid the protests and riots that spread across the country after George Floyd’s death in police custody. The leftist prosecutor has taken a soft-on-crime approach to criminal justice and has also <a href="https://www.washtenaw.org/3284/Prosecutor-Eli-Savit">pushed</a> “environmental initiatives in Michigan and across the country.” 
Dyer also said she’s looking forward to partnering with the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office to go after corporate crimes, such as “wage theft” and “tip theft.” 
“Hand-in-hand with the environmental crimes is also the corporate crimes,” she said.

Michigan state officials plan to clear 420 acres from a state forest to build a new solar farm in the name of environmentalism.
A “top state official” <a href="https://www.mlive.com/environment/2025/01/michigan-plans-to-clear-400-acres-of-state-forest-near-gaylord-for-solar-farm.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">confirmed</a> to MLive that the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) planned to bulldoze a large swath of forestland to build a solar farm as part of a lease agreement.
The outlet noted that the DNR “recently assessed 1,200 acres of public trust land in Otsego County near a major power transmission line to decide whether it was suitable for solar arrays” and decided to lease 35% of the land to go with other solar projects that are already being developed.
The sudden desire to destroy trees for solar panels comes as the state risks failing to meet its own climate goal of 100% “clean” energy by 2040. If it doesn’t increase its development of so-called renewable energy, it won’t meet its arbitrary timeframe.
The 420 acres about to be bulldozed are part of 4,000 acres of public land that will be flattened to try and meet the 2040 deadline.
If Michigan instead committed to nuclear power, it could meet its goal much quicker and by using much less land. Chris Martz, a meteorology student who regularly tackles climate change and energy myths, published a chart showing nuclear power produces far more power on less land than solar and wind. For example, 640 acres (about one square mile) for a nuclear power plant would produce 1,000 megawatts of power and can power just over 775,000 homes. Getting the same power from solar panels would require 5,000-7,000 acres of land and only power 193,523 homes. Onshore wind power is even less efficient.
Dr. Judith Curry, one of the most prominent atmospheric scientists who debunks climate myths, responded to Martz’s chart by saying, “Land use requirements (among other thing [sic]) will seriously constrain the penetration of wind and solar into the grid, and this analysis doesn&#8217;t include the additional land requirements for transmission lines.”

Michigan’s decision to destroy land for more solar panels also comes at a time when climate alarmism is seeing a decline after decades of dire predictions have failed to come true.

A Michigan woman whose 19-year-old daughter was raped, then kidnapped and murdered by the rapist after the girl warned that he would do so to prevent her from testifying against him, <a href="https://www.detroitnews.com/story/news/local/michigan/2024/12/26/rachel-timmerman-murder-president-joe-biden-commutation-death-penalty-marvin-gabrion-life-in-prison/77238691007/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">excoriated</a> President Biden for commuting the murderer’s death sentence.
In 1997, Rachel Timmerman warned police and prosecutors that Marvin Gabrion would kill her; her mother and other members of her community also warned of the danger. But before justice could intervene, Gabrion kidnapped the 19-year-old girl and murdered her. Her body was discovered in the Manistee National Forest with her mouth and eyes taped, and chains padlocked around her body. In addition, Rachel’s 11-month-old daughter, Shannon, was never found. Gabrion received a death sentence in 2002 and consistently appealed the decision for 22 years.

When she heard that Biden was commuting Gabrion’s death sentence, Timmerman&#8217;s mother, Velda Robinson, told The Detroit News, “Those that don’t believe in the death penalty I believe, honestly, that they have never been traumatized by somebody so vile, that they couldn’t comprehend where I’m coming from. They really shouldn’t judge me for wanting it.”
“People need to know that when you do something so heinous, you ain’t going to get away with it,” she continued. “How does Biden justify whose crime is worse than the others? (The jury) made this decision and he just slapped the whole judicial system down.”
One of the other recipients of Biden’s commutations, Brandon Council, murdered 59-year-old Donna Major and 36-year-old Katie Skeen in an armed robbery on August 21, 2017, at Crescom Bank in Conway, South Carolina. Major’s family reacted to the commutation of Council’s sentence on <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/i-watched-my-mother-be-murdered-family-reacts-to-biden-commuting-killers-death-sentence" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fox News</a>.

Asked how she felt after she received the news, Major’s daughter Heather stated, “Anger. Absolute anger. We were told from our prosecution team on Sunday afternoon. I was actually gathered with my in-laws for our family Christmas; my sister was gathered with her in-laws, and we got the call. And I was angry. I’m still angry. I am upset that this is even happening, that one man can make this decision without even talking to the victims; without any regard for what we’ve been through, what we’re going through. I’m completely hurt, frustrated, and angry.”
When Major’s husband Danny was asked whether his wife had been shown any mercy, he replied:

After Biden announced the commutation of 37 out of 40 criminals on federal death row, he left three men there: Robert Bowers, who murdered 11 people at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh in 2018; Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who bombed the 2013 Boston Marathon, killing three people and injuring dozens of others, and Dylann Roof, who murdered nine black churchgoers in South Carolina in 2015. Michigan Democrats are pushing multiple pieces of controversial legislation before they lose their hold on the Michigan House of Representatives at the end of the year. Two Democrats and the entire House Republican conference, however, skipped the state legislature&#8217;s sessions on Wednesday, hamstringing Democrats&#8217; last-minute efforts.
Far-Left Democrats in the House have been pushing for a vote on a bill to allow illegal immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses, and a police reform bill that would limit law enforcement&#8217;s use of no-knock warrants. But Republicans, joined by Democratic Rep. Karen Whitsett, want the House to focus on fixing the roads, protecting restaurant workers&#8217; tips, and fixing issues with a paid sick leave law.
Michigan House Republicans walked out of the legislative session last week, slamming Democrats for ignoring legislation on road improvements, minimum wage, and paid sick leave bills that Republican members argue are more pressing issues. Democrats currently have a trifecta in the state, controlling the state House, Senate, and governor&#8217;s mansion.
The Michigan Republicans did not return for sessions on Wednesday and do not plan to return on Thursday, which is listed as the final day on the voting calendar until the state House flips back to Republican control in 2025. Whitsett also did not attend Wednesday&#8217;s session, meaning Democrats lacked the votes to pass any bills.
&#8220;I’m staying home for my constituents,&#8221; Whitsett said, according to <a href="https://www.detroitnews.com/story/news/politics/2024/12/17/whitsett-karen-house-majority-dems-quorum/77060859007/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Detroit News</a>. &#8220;We’re not going to be voting on garbage bills that do nothing for our community and have a negative impact.”
Restaurant workers and bartenders have voiced <a href="https://www.wxyz.com/news/servers-bartenders-pack-michigan-capitol-to-save-the-tipping-system" target="_blank" rel="noopener">concerns</a> about a minimum wage law that is set to take effect in February that they say will decrease the money they make from tips. Business owners, meanwhile, are concerned about a new law on required sick leave for nearly all employees. Some business owners <a href="https://www.bridgemi.com/business-watch/businesses-fear-worst-michigans-new-sick-time-law-will-lawmakers-act" target="_blank" rel="noopener">say</a> it will hurt their efforts to run a punctual and effective operation while also hurting employees who already have sick leave benefits. Unless the state legislature acts, the new minimum wage and paid sick time laws will take effect in two months. Michigan House Speaker-elect Matt Hall told The Daily Wire that Republicans also want to vote on a plan to fix the roads that won&#8217;t raise any taxes.
&#8220;The things these Democrats are working on are radical and out of touch with the people of Michigan or unimportant in most cases,&#8221; Hall told The Daily Wire in a phone interview. &#8220;We want to spend our time here focusing on the issues that matter most to the working people of Michigan.&#8221;
Hall added that if Democrats refuse to vote on the roads bill, or minimum wage or sick leave laws, then the House should adjourn. He said that Republicans will pick these issues up when they take over the Michigan House next month.
Michigan Democratic Attorney General Dana Nessel accused Michigan House Republicans and Whitsett of taking &#8220;literally criminal&#8221; actions.
&#8220;Article IV of the Michigan Constitution defines the role of the Legislature and how it is to be constituted. The chief purposes of the Legislature are to enact new laws and amend or repeal existing laws,&#8221; Nessel wrote on Facebook. &#8220;MCL 750.478: When any duty is or shall be enjoined by law upon any public officer, or upon any person holding any public trust or employment, every willful neglect to perform such duty, where no special provision shall have been made for the punishment of such delinquency, constitutes a misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment for not more than 1 year or a fine of not more than $1,000.00.&#8221;
Michigan House rules allow for the Speaker to call on the sergeant-at-arms to bring absent lawmakers to the session, but Democratic Speaker Joe Tate has so far declined to use that authority. House Speaker Pro Tem Laurie Pohutsky said she is encouraging Tate to dispatch the sergeant-at-arms.
&#8220;And I am not the only one,&#8221; Pohutsky said. &#8220;He is the Speaker of the House. That is his decision to make.&#8221;
Later on Wednesday, Whitsett said that she plans to be in attendance on Thursday since some of her bills will be taken up for a vote, Gongwer News <a href="https://x.com/ElenaDurnbaugh/status/1869505856381026506" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.
In the final weeks of the 2024 session, Michigan House Democrats have crammed through leftist legislation, including a bill to prevent libraries from removing books on sexual orientation and gender identity and a bill that updates the state&#8217;s hate crime law to include protections for sexual orientation and gender identity or expression. Those bills are now in the hands of the Democrat-controlled state Senate, which could also be in a bind as one Democratic state Senator, Sylvia Santana, also announced that she will be skipping the legislative session, The Detroit News <a href="https://www.detroitnews.com/story/news/politics/2024/12/17/whitsett-karen-house-majority-dems-quorum/77060859007/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.

Lawmakers are scheduled to come back for a session at noon on Thursday with a House Democratic Caucus spokesman telling reporters, &#8220;The agenda for today is the agenda for tomorrow,&#8221; according to <a href="https://x.com/JordynHermani/status/1869470853475528956" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bridge Michigan</a>. In the state Senate, Democrats need 20 votes to pass any legislation, but Santana&#8217;s absence puts their count at 19. Similarly, in the state House, Democrats need 56 votes, but they only have 55 with Whitsett skipping the session.
House Republicans gathered for a press conference at a Lansing-area restaurant on Wednesday morning, where Speaker-elect Hall continued his calls for Democrats to take action with Republicans to save restaurant workers&#8217; tipping system. He also slammed AG Nessel over her comments.
&#8220;We&#8217;re not going to be bullied and intimidated by this attorney general,&#8221; Hall said. &#8220;And she has no business as a member of the executive branch telling us in the legislative branch what to do. Look, I&#8217;m an attorney too, so I hope she knows about the separation of powers, but we&#8217;re not going to be bullied by her.&#8221;
&#8220;She knows that oversight is coming and accountability to her department and scrutiny of her budget,&#8221; he added. &#8220;And we&#8217;re going to get her office under control.&#8221;

The University of Michigan announced on Thursday that it has eliminated diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) statements from its faculty hiring, promotion, and tenure processes.
Some university community members celebrated the <a href="https://www.detroitnews.com/story/news/local/michigan/2024/12/05/um-to-no-longer-use-diversity-statements/76773567007/?taid=6751ad37cc54680001f03993&amp;utm_campaign=trueanthem&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter" target="_blank" rel="noopener">decision to scrap</a> the DEI statements, which individuals were asked to provide to demonstrate what they&#8217;ve done and plan to do to advance such policies. They said the statements were used as ideological litmus tests and enforced intellectual conformity.
&#8220;I applaud the provost for ending the practice of requiring diversity statements,&#8221; said Sarah Hubbard, one of the regents on the eight-person board overseeing the university. &#8220;This policy change removes a barrier to diversity of thought on campus by eliminating the ideological litmus test.&#8221;
Provost Laurie McCauley announced the decision on Thursday after forming a faculty committee to review the use of diversity statements.
“Critics of diversity statements perceive them as expressions of personal identity traits, support of specific ideology or opinions on socially-relevant issues, and serve as a ‘litmus test’ of whether a faculty member’s views are politically acceptable,” the committee stated in a report. “Thus, as currently enacted, diversity statements have the potential to limit viewpoints and reduce diversity of thought among faculty members.”
While the University of Michigan Board of Regents is set to meet on Thursday, Hubbard says she doesn’t expect it to address any other DEI issues at this time.

The University of Michigan’s decision follows the Massachusetts Institute of Technology&#8217;s <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/05/06/us-news/mit-bans-controversial-diversity-statement-hiring-requirement-they-dont-work/">announcement</a> over the summer that it would discontinue using DEI statements in the hiring process.
“Requests for a statement on diversity will no longer be part of applications for any faculty positions at MIT,” one MIT representative said at the time.
“My goals are to tap into the full scope of human talent, to bring the very best to MIT, and to make sure they thrive once here,” MIT President Sally Kornbluth said. “We can build an inclusive environment in many ways, but compelled statements impinge on freedom of expression, and they don’t work.”
Harvard University’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences also announced this summer that it would <a href="https://www.thecrimson.com/article/2024/6/4/dei-faculty-hiring-stopped/">discontinue</a> the use of diversity statements in its hiring process.

Detroit Democratic Mayor Mike Duggan, who has been in office since 2014, announced that he is running for Michigan governor as an independent in the 2026 election.
Duggan, 66, who has served decades in public office in Wayne County and Detroit, told city employees last week that he would not run for another term as mayor. He officially announced in a press release on Wednesday that he is running to replace Michigan Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who is term-limited after 2026, the Detroit Free Press <a href="https://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/detroit/2024/12/04/detroit-mayor-mike-duggan-running-michigan-governor-independent/76234462007/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. Duggan has been a Democrat for his entire political career but said he is running as an independent because he wants to change &#8220;the current system [that] forces people to choose sides.&#8221;
“I&#8217;m not running to be the Democrats&#8217; governor or the Republicans&#8217; governor. I&#8217;m running to be your governor,” Duggan said. “The political fighting and the nonsense that once held back Detroit is too often what we’re seeing across Michigan today. The current system forces people to choose sides — not find solutions. It’s time to change that. I intend to bring together Democrats, Republicans and Independents — and our young people, far too many of whom have given up on our political system — together to move Michigan forward.”
Whitmer, who easily won a second term in 2022, is a rising national figure in the Democratic Party and is being floated as a potential candidate for president in 2028.
Duggan has overseen a city that has gone through a decades-long spell of violence and decline. Earlier this year, the city <a href="https://detroitmi.gov/opportunities/detroit-tackling-crime-across-city" target="_blank" rel="noopener">boasted</a> of recording the lowest homicide rate since 1962, with 252 homicides reported in 2023. According to the city, non-fatal shootings and carjackings also decreased in 2023.
Despite these recent drops in violent crime, however, Detroit remains one of the most dangerous places to live in the U.S. According to 2022 data, Detroit ranked <a href="https://www.statista.com/statistics/217685/most-dangerous-cities-in-north-america-by-crime-rate/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">second</a>, only behind Memphis, for the highest violent crime rate in the nation at 2,027.9 violent crimes per 100,000 people.
Duggan touted his record of leading Detroit as the city came out of bankruptcy in 2014.

Incoming GOP Freshman Tom Barrett celebrated the bipartisanship from members of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/congress" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Congress</a> after he was able to take over the same office his great grandfather occupied nearly a century ago.
Earlier this week, the Republican &#8212; who flipped Michigan&#8217;s 7th Congressional District seat left open from Democrat Elissa Slotkin &#8212; sent out a letter to his new colleagues ahead of the freshmen lottery held in Congress that determines a new Representative&#8217;s office space, <a href="https://thehill.com/blogs/in-the-know/5002610-incoming-house-republican-tom-barrett-michigan/">The Hill</a> reported.
“I’ve shared with several of you that my great-grandfather, Louis Rabaut from Michigan, served here in Congress and was first elected 90 years ago in 1934,” the letter from Barrett, <a href="https://x.com/kv_swartz/status/1859585129259118764">posted on</a> social media, read.
“He died in office in 1961, long before I was born, so I never had the opportunity to meet him or ask him about his time in Congress, but his legacy is something my whole family is very proud of,” it added, noting that his family member occupied three different spaces in the Longworth House Office building.

A federal judge paused the Justice Department’s case against seven pro-life Christians <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/breaking-89-year-old-woman-convicted-faces-over-a-decade-in-prison-for-peaceful-pro-life-protest" target="_blank" rel="noopener">awaiting sentencing</a> over a peaceful protest at an abortion facility in Michigan as President Joe Biden prepares to leave office. 
Judge Matthew Leitman ordered Tuesday that the FACE Act and felony conspiracy case against the pro-life activists be paused until after President-elect Donald Trump takes office. The pro-lifers, including 89-year-old communist concentration camp survivor <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/god-wins-in-the-end-89-year-old-pro-life-activist-speaks-out-ahead-of-high-stakes-trial" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Eva Edl</a>, face up to 10 years for their conviction on conspiracy charges in September. 
Sentencing had not yet been scheduled due to several pending motions from the defense to dismiss the convictions that Leitman has not yet ruled on. These motions will further be delayed due to the judge&#8217;s latest order. 
“As further discussed on the record, the Court will conduct another status conference during the week of March 24, 2025, to receive a report from the Government trial team as to whether there has been any change in the Government’s position with respect to the continuation of this case and/or with respect to the positions expected to be advanced by the Defendants in their post-trial motions,” Leitman, an Obama appointee, wrote in a court order viewed by The Daily Wire. 
Leitman’s order comes as there is anticipation that President-elect Donald Trump may quickly move to pardon the pro-lifers who have been imprisoned under Biden. Back in June, Trump promised to review the cases of “every political prisoner,” including people imprisoned over the FACE Act. 
The judge said that he would schedule an earlier conference on the case if the Justice Department was notified earlier of changes in handling the case. 
Alongside Edl, those facing sentencing are Chester Gallagher, Heather Idoni, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/pro-life-father-facing-11-years-in-prison-says-biden-doj-is-targeting-conservative-christians">Joel Curry</a>, Justin Phillips, Cal Zastrow, and his daughter Eva Zastrow. They were found to have violated the FACE Act and conspiracy against rights over a peaceful protest at the Northland Family Planning Clinic. 
Leitman’s order followed a status conference on the case on Monday in Detroit. On Wednesday, he ordered lawyers for the defendants to appear for the status hearing on March 25. 
Steve Crampton, a lawyer from the Thomas More Society involved with the case, told The Daily Wire that Leitman decided to stay the proceedings during a status conference on Monday “in light of the election results and the likelihood that a new Department of Justice would alter its policies concerning prosecution of these FACE cases and in particular the use of the Conspiracy Against Rights statute against these defendants.”

Crampton told The Daily Wire that Leitman was concerned it would be a waste of taxpayer money to keep paying court appointed attorneys because the “motions that may become moot depending on the new DOJ policies.” Crampton added that he told the judge that he and others were working on preparing formal petitions for pardons for the activists, as Trump has previously indicated he would look into doing if elected. 
“I think the judge was correct in his thinking about the DOJ perhaps reversing course here and ordering a stay of the proceedings,” Crampton said. “There is a new sheriff in town, and these prosecutions were always more about the politics of protecting the abortion industry than they were about serious violations of the law.”
Multiple pro-lifers across the country are currently incarcerated on FACE Act-related charges brought by Biden’s Justice Department. 
During a Faith and Freedom Coalition conference in June, Trump talked about taking action on the first day of his term to help 75-year-old Paulette Harlow, who is serving a two-year prison sentence for the FACE Act.
“Paulette is one of many peaceful pro-lifers who Joe Biden has rounded up, sometimes with SWAT teams, and thrown them in jail,” Trump <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/defend-our-country-imprisoned-pro-life-activists-urge-americans-to-vote-against-kamala" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. “Many people are in jail over this. … We’re going to get that taken care of immediately — [on the] first day.”
He added that he will “rapidly review the cases of every political prisoner who’s unjustly victimized by the Biden regime, including Paulette, so we can get them out of the gulags and back to their families where they belong.&#8221;

A father, grandfather, and Michigan pastor died from his injuries after he was struck by a vehicle driven by an illegal immigrant earlier this month, and now his family is speaking out about the &#8220;senseless&#8221; killing.
Stephen Singleton, 72, was on one of his routine morning walks in Rochester Hills, Michigan, on November 3 when he was hit while crossing the street, ABC 7 <a href="https://www.wxyz.com/news/family-mourns-loss-of-72-year-old-pedestrian-hit-by-car-killed-in-rochester-hills" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. According to investigators, Singleton was wearing a reflective vest and was using the marked crosswalk when he was hit. Authorities do not believe speed or alcohol played a role in the deadly crash. One witness told ABC 7 that the driver ran a red light before hitting Singleton.
The Oakland County Sheriff&#8217;s Office said the driver of the vehicle is an illegal immigrant from Colombia. Michigan state law <a href="https://www.michigan.gov/-/media/Project/Websites/sos/10lawensn/Foreign_DL_countries_palm_card.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">allows</a> non-citizens to drive in the state as long as they have a foreign driver&#8217;s license that &#8220;is printed in English or accompanied with an English translation.&#8221;
According to Singleton&#8217;s family, the illegal immigrant suspect was released from custody after the crash.
&#8220;I had to sit and watch my husband of 53 years die in front of me and then to know that the person who did this is walking around is very difficult to deal with,&#8221; Singleton&#8217;s wife, Teri, said, according to <a href="https://www.fox2detroit.com/news/family-well-known-detroit-area-pastor-killed-crash-questions-why-suspect-was-released?taid=673ebacf04c1de0001975d25&amp;utm_campaign=trueanthem&amp;utm_medium=trueanthem&amp;utm_source=twitter" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fox 2</a>.

Singleton&#8217;s family said the 72-year-old Michigan man was a dedicated servant and a former medic. He also volunteered his service at Ground Zero after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Singleton&#8217;s daughter Ruth told ABC 7, “One day, I wake up and just know he&#8217;s gone for such a simple and senseless thing. I just don&#8217;t understand.&#8221;
&#8220;He was a loving person who cared about everybody,&#8221; said Teri. &#8220;I mean, the whole neighborhood, everybody in our community has come to my door. They didn’t even see the name on the report, but they knew him because of his habits.&#8221;

Democrats in <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/michigan" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Michigan&#8217;s</a> state House are attempting to ram through &#8220;radical&#8221; sex education changes in the weeks before control of the body flips back to Republicans.
Earlier this week, nearly two dozen Michigan House Democrats introduced <a href="https://legislature.mi.gov/documents/2023-2024/billintroduced/House/pdf/2024-HIB-6068.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">HB 6068</a>, which seeks to make major changes to the Revised School Code Act of 1976. The changes range from allowing schools to distribute condoms to giving schools a green light to teach students that abortion is a &#8220;method of family planning&#8221; and &#8220;reproductive health.&#8221;
One of the biggest revisions proposed in the new bill is to remove a ban on distributing &#8220;a family planning drug or device&#8221; on public school property. The proposed amendments to the 1976 law would also add leftist gender terms and require that schools &#8220;affirmatively recognize that individuals have different sexual orientations and gender identities and, when discussing or providing examples of relationships, be inclusive of various gender relationships.&#8221;
While the changes would still allow schools to teach that abstinence is a &#8220;responsible and effective method&#8221; of preventing pregnancy and infections, the bill would remove a line referring to abstinence as &#8220;a positive lifestyle for unmarried people.&#8221; The new bill also keeps in place an option for parents to pull their children out of sex ed.
Some Republicans have raised alarms about HB 6068, with Republican state Rep. Jaime Greene calling it &#8220;a clear overreach that strips away the foundational emphasis on abstinence, undermining a responsible approach to sexual health education.&#8221;
&#8220;It introduces sensitive topics like gender identity, sexual orientation, and reproductive rights, which many parents feel are completely inappropriate for young students,&#8221; Greene added in a statement.
Greene told The Daily Wire in a phone call on Thursday that &#8220;people are tired of partisan politics&#8221; and she expects many parents to opt their children out of sex education if the bill passes. Greene stressed that teaching age-appropriate sex education is still important, but said that Democrats&#8217; proposed changes to the 1976 law aren&#8217;t in line with the average Michigan resident.
&#8220;Sex ed is supposed to be teaching about biology and how your body works, how it makes a baby, not necessarily you&#8217;re identity,&#8221; she said.
The bill was referred to the Education Committee after it was introduced by state Reps. Rachel Hood, Emily Dievendorf, Samantha Steckloff, Kara Hope, Veronica Paiz, Natalie Price, Jenn Hill, Penolope Tsernoglou, Lauri Pohutsky, Regina Weiss, Felicia Brabec, Jennifer Conlin, Donavan McKinney, John Fitzgerald, Amos O&#8217;Neal, Cynthia Neeley, Julie Brixie, Carrie Rheingans, Phil Skaggs, Noah Arbit, Kimberly Edwards, and Helena Scott — all Democrats.
Hood, one of the bill&#8217;s strongest advocates, <a href="https://www.bridgemi.com/talent-education/michigan-dems-want-overhaul-sex-ed-allow-schools-distribute-condoms" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> Bridge Michigan, “Comprehensive sex education takes a wider lens: enabling students to make healthy choices for themselves and their relationships — and lets these conversations begin long before sex or puberty at developmentally appropriate levels.”
Pohutsky, the Speaker Pro Tempore, said the bill &#8220;is absolutely a priority&#8221; for her to get passed in the lame duck session, which continues until the end of December. Greene blasted Democrats for continuing to push a &#8220;radical agenda&#8221; in Michigan despite losing the state House in the election.

Republicans took back control of the state House in the 2024 election and will hold 58 of the 110 seats at the beginning of January. If the sex ed reform bill is passed before then, it would go to the Democrat-controlled Michigan Senate, and then to the desk of Democrat Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

Brandon Ortiz-Vite, <a href="https://www.detroitnews.com/story/news/local/michigan/2024/11/08/man-sentenced-michigan-killing-stoked-anti-immigrant-campaign-rhetoric/76128932007/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">26</a>, was deported under the Trump administration in 2020, but illegally re-entered the U.S. &#8220;at an unknown date,&#8221; according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Ortiz-Vite, who is from Durango and Puebla, Mexico, shot and killed Garcia on March 22 and dumped her body beside the road. The two, who were friends, had gotten into an argument before the illegal immigrant murdered the 25-year-old Michigan woman.
Ortiz-Vite accepted a plea deal with prosecutors who agreed to drop a first-degree murder charge for a second-degree murder charge. Kent County, Michigan, Circuit Court Judge Mark A. Trusock sentenced him to 39 years in prison on Thursday, News Channel 3 <a href="https://wwmt.com/news/local/brandon-ortiz-vite-ruby-garcia-murder-grand-rapids-prison-sentence-crime-investigation-police-state-michigan" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.
&#8220;You, sir, are a cold blooded murderer,&#8221; Trusock told the killer. &#8220;This was intentional, and you are a danger to society.&#8221;
In court, Ortiz-Vite told the Garcia family that he is &#8220;full of guilt and shame.&#8221;
&#8220;I know right now my words hold little, if any, value to the Garcia family, which is understandable,&#8221; he said. &#8220;As a man, I stand before you humbly full of guilt and shame.&#8221;
The murder added to the nationwide outrage over the Biden administration&#8217;s porous southern border. Garcia was murdered just a month after Georgia nursing student <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/illegal-immigrant-charged-with-laken-rileys-murder-is-active-gang-member-report" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Laken Riley</a> was brutally killed by a Venezuelan illegal immigrant while she was on a run. Last month, President-elect Donald Trump, who made immigration a central part of his campaign, <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2024-election/trump-calls-death-penalty-migrants-kill-us-citizens-rcna175131" target="_blank" rel="noopener">called</a> for the death penalty &#8220;for any migrant who kills an American citizen or a law enforcement officer.&#8221;
A Michigan State Police sergeant testified in court that Ortiz-Vite and Garcia got into a heated argument before Ortiz-Vite reached for his gun. Forensic pathologist David Start said that the illegal immigrant shot the young woman four times, including twice in the head.
“You started shooting when you were in the car, then took her out of the car, put the gun to her head and pulled the trigger and shot her again,&#8221; Judge Trusock said.
Two days after murdering Garcia, Ortiz-Vite called 911 to turn himself over to police.

Democratic Senate candidate Elissa Slotkin will win the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/michigan" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Michigan</a> Senate race over Republican Mike Rogers, according to the Associated Press and Decision Desk HQ.
With 99% of the vote counted, Slotkin holds a less than 19,000-vote lead over Rogers, according to the AP, which called the race for Slotkin on Wednesday afternoon. Democrats will hang onto the seat in Michigan despite former President Donald Trump&#8217;s dominant performance in the state, which he won by over 80,000 votes. Democrats have controlled both of Michigan&#8217;s Senate seats since 2001.

Slotkin <a href="https://x.com/i/broadcasts/1nAJEpWOOwlGL" target="_blank" rel="noopener">spoke</a> to supporters on Wednesday, but stopped short of claiming victory, saying, &#8220;As things stand right now, we are very confident that when all the votes are counted, we will be senator-elect for the state of Michigan.&#8221;
Rogers conceded the race and congratulated Slotkin in a statement shared with The Daily Wire.
&#8220;Congratulations to Congresswoman Slotkin on her victory, I wish her the best as she serves the people of Michigan in the Senate. I am humbled and honored for the millions of Michiganders who embraced our campaign, shared their thoughts, their concerns, their ideas, and put their faith and trust in me to serve our great state as their U.S. Senator. I’m also proud to have run on the ticket with our President-elect, Donald J. Trump, and I have no doubt that he is going to help move Michigan and America forward,&#8221; Rogers said.
Slotkin served one term in the House of Representatives for Michigan&#8217;s 7th District before running for the seat of retiring Democratic Sen. Debbie Stabenow. She also worked in the Obama administration as the Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs. Before that, she was a CIA analyst who served three tours in Iraq.

The 2024 race between Slotkin and Rogers focused on the economy and immigration as Rogers attempted to tie his opponent to the Biden-Harris record. Slotkin, meanwhile, focused a lot of her campaign messaging on her support for abortion.
In September, Slotkin warned donors that Vice President Kamala Harris was “underwater” in her campaign’s internal polling, a warning that became reality as Harris lost to Trump in the state.
Republicans <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/30m-dumped-into-tight-mi-senate-race-to-boost-republican" target="_blank" rel="noopener">dumped</a> tens of millions of dollars into the Michigan Senate race in hopes of flipping it in their favor. Despite the loss in Michigan, Republicans still flipped Senate control and currently stand at 52 seats with multiple races that have yet to be called that could add to that majority.
