<p>On Thursday, several lawmakers expressed condemnation of an <a href="https://thehill.com/opinion/congress-blog/5055171-constitution-insurrection-trump-disqualification/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">op-ed</a> in The Hill that urged members of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/congress" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Congress</a> to try and block President-elect <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/congress" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Donald Trump</a> from taking office for his second term.</p>
<p>Democrat-linked lawyers Evan Davis and David Schulte <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/dem-lawyers-urge-congress-to-ignore-electoral-college-stop-trump-make-kamala-president" target="_blank" rel="noopener">claimed</a> there was &#8220;overwhelming&#8221; evidence of Trump engaging in an insurrection that disqualifies him from the presidency and if both chambers spurned Trump&#8217;s Electoral College votes, Vice President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/kamala-harris" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kamala Harris</a> — who lost to Trump in the 2024 contest — could be elected instead.</p>
<p>&#8220;Sounds like Democrats and the media are planning an insurrection,&#8221; said the popular &#8220;Libs of TikTok&#8221; account run by Chaya Raichik, after which Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) <a href="https://x.com/BasedMikeLee/status/1872327081302122901" target="_blank" rel="noopener">replied</a>, &#8220;They use the word &#8216;insurrection&#8217; only when talking about Republicans.&#8221;</p>

<p>&#8220;The Left has always been the real threat to democracy. Now they’re finally admitting it out loud,&#8221; <a href="https://x.com/NancyMace/status/1872347280998809752" target="_blank" rel="noopener">declared</a> Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC). &#8220;There is no fair and impartial process in the Left’s America.&#8221;</p>
<p>More Republicans responded in kind: &#8220;Never tell me that they haven’t tried to steal the election,&#8221; <a href="https://x.com/RepMikeCollins/status/1872313419371774177" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> Mike Collins (R-GA). &#8220;This will not happen. He is getting confirmed,&#8221; <a href="https://x.com/realannapaulina/status/1872328202305274152" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL). &#8220;This is insane. And it’s not a thing,&#8221; <a href="https://x.com/chiproytx/status/1872345098882789425" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX).</p>
<p>At least one Democrat, Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-NY), <a href="https://x.com/RitchieTorres/status/1872324454535311869" target="_blank" rel="noopener">sounded off</a> with a disapproving post: &#8220;If you only believe in democracy when it produces the results you like, then you do not truly believe in democracy.&#8221;</p>
<p>Two major elements of Davis and Schulte&#8217;s op-ed centered on how a Democrat-led House impeached Trump in 2021 as part of the Capitol riot-focused impeachment inquiry and the courts in Colorado removing him from the state’s 2024 GOP primary ballot after ruling that he engaged in an insurrection with his actions on January 6, 2021.</p>

<p>However, a GOP-controlled Senate acquitted Trump, ending the impeachment effort, and the Supreme Court <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/supreme-court-rules-trump-cant-be-kicked-off-colorado-ballot" target="_blank" rel="noopener">issued</a> a ruling that determined that states could not remove Trump from their ballots using Section 3 of the 14th Amendment — an insurrection clause dating back to the Civil War — without Congress <a href="https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/national-international/supreme-court-colorado-ballot-challenge-14th-amendment/3372207/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">rejecting him first</a>.</p>
<p>Republicans will lead both the House and the Senate in the next term, meaning Trump will more than likely be shielded from any serious bids to fight his return to the White House, but some Democrats <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/leading-dems-wont-confirm-if-theyll-certify-trump-victory-report" target="_blank" rel="noopener">have been dodgy</a> on the question of whether they would vote to certify the results.</p>
<p>There were many others who responded to the op-ed published in The Hill with derision, including Trump&#8217;s spokesman Steven Cheung, who <a href="https://x.com/StevenCheung/status/1872322427159777286" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> on X, &#8220;Oh, look. Democrats want to steal the election and invalidate the will of the American people. Threat to Democracy.&#8221;</p>
