“Spider-Man: No Way Home” star Tom Holland recently discussed his struggle with alcohol dependency and how he’s been doing since getting sober.
He talked about finding sobriety on a new episode of the “On Purpose with Jay Shetty” podcast. Holland said he started getting sober following “a very, very boozy” Christmas last year. After partaking in the popular trend of “Dry January,” which requires abstaining from alcohol for the entire month, the actor said he realized how dependent he had become.
“All I could think about was having a drink. It really scared me,” the 27-year-old actor said during the interview. “I just was like, ‘Wow, maybe I have a little bit of an alcohol thing.”
After deciding to extend his sobriety to longer than one month, Holland noticed even more negative effects.
“I felt like I couldn’t be social,” Holland said. “I felt like I couldn’t go to the pub and have a lime soda. I couldn’t go out for dinner. I was really, really struggling. I just sort of said to myself, like, ‘Why? Why am I enslaved to this drink? Why am I so obsessed by the idea of having this drink?'”
The “Spider-Man” star said he made a goal of going six months without drinking, which led to him saying he was “the happiest I’ve ever been in my life.”
“I could sleep better. I could handle problems better,” he said. “Things that would go wrong on set, that would normally set me off, I could take in my stride. I had such better mental clarity. I felt healthier, I felt fitter. I’m happy to say it – I was definitely addicted to alcohol. I’m not shying away from that at all.”

The British-born star said giving up alcohol has inspired others in his life to do the same. He said his mom also chose sobriety after he had such a positive experience getting sober. “She’s loving it, and it’s been amazing,” Holland said during the podcast interview. “I can’t believe the difference that I feel from not drinking. Yeah, I feel amazing.”
