Rumors are circulating again about the hit NBC comedy “The Office” getting a reboot in the near future.

The series, starring Steve Carell as oblivious boss Michael Scott, aired from 2005 until 2013 and has become one of the most beloved comedies in modern television history. Chatter that a remake is one of the upcoming projects on the docket following the end of the WGA (Writers Guild of America) strike, which could come soon as a tentative agreement was reportedly reached last weekend.

The news comes courtesy of the Puck newsletter. The article written by Matthew Belloni and Jonathan Handel said that the original series showrunner, Greg Daniels, would return for the newest iteration.

They wrote, “Greg Daniels is set to do a reboot of The Office, for instance. Disney’s Dana Walden will finally be able to announce the return of her BFF Ryan Murphy from Netflix. A ton of high-profile movie scripts will come in. The industry will chug back to normal.”

While these rumors are unconfirmed, and no other details were provided, Daniels spoke positively about rebooting the series in the past. He told Collider in 2022, “I can’t tell whether fans would want more of it, and when I say more of it, I don’t think it would be the same characters.”

Daniels continued, “I think it would just be sort of like an extension of the universe, you know what I mean, like the way [The] Mandalorian is like an extension of Star Wars. But I don’t know if that would be something people would want or not, it’s hard to tell.”

This isn’t the first time “The Office” became the target of a reboot. In May, it was announced that a female-led version of the comedy was in the works in Australia. The American version of “The Office” was based on the original U.K. series starring Ricky Gervais as office middle manager David Brent.

Actress Mindy Kaling previously discussed how the humor on “The Office” couldn’t exist in today’s hyper-sensitive, politically correct climate.

“That show is so inappropriate now,” Kaling said during an interview with Good Morning America in December. “The writers who I’m still in touch with now, we always talk about how so much of that show we probably couldn’t make now.”

She continued, “Tastes have changed, and honestly what offends people has changed so much now. I think that actually is one of the reasons the show is popular, because people feel like there’s something kind of fearless about it or taboo that it talks about on the show.”
