Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich believes the criminal cases brought against former President Donald Trump have improved his chances of winning the 2024 Republican nomination and the general election against President Joe Biden.

During an interview on Fox News’s “Life, Liberty & Levin,” Gingrich said that he believes the former president has seen boosts in support after indictments – of which Trump is now facing four – because voters see him as going “head-on” against a “corrupt, authoritarian system.”

“I think many people who may or may not like Trump’s personality, but they look at this and they think, ‘Here are my choices. I’m going to side with a totally corrupt administration or I’m going to side with the guy who has the guts to stand there and take the beating and keep coming,” Gingrich told host Mark Levin.

Gingrich, who served as House Speaker from 1995 to 1999, claimed that Trump has seen a boost in support from black males because of his numerous indictments. Black males “identify” with Trump because they see the system that has “harrass[ed]” him, according to Gingrich.

“The reason is simple: They feel that the police have harassed them,” Gingrich told Levin. “They’re now watching the government harass Trump. They actually identify with what he’s going through.”

As for Trump’s wider coalition of supporters, Gingrich called the former president the “leader of a movement” against “an establishment that is totally corrupt, destroying anything that gets in its way.”

Gingrich also speculated that Trump would have avoided all criminal cases brought against him if he had “retired” after the 2020 election.

In the end, the indictments might catapult Trump not only to the Republican nomination but also back to the White House, according to Gingrich.

“I think that the country is in fact going to nominate Trump, and I think Trump has a very high likelihood of winning the general election,” Gingrich argued.

Last week, Trump – the 2024 GOP primary frontrunner – was arrested and booked in the Fulton County Jail before he was released on a $200,000 bond over charges relating to his alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election. It was the fourth indictment brought against the former president, who has accused Biden, the Department of Justice, and prosecutors of targeting him in a “witch hunt.”
