As she vowed to do, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) renewed a push to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas after the House returned from the Thanksgiving break.

The congresswoman, who often is referred to as “MTG,” returned to the House floor on Wednesday and announced a new resolution, accusing Mayorkas of “high crimes and misdemeanors” over his handling of border security.

“Today, I reintroduced my articles of impeachment against Secretary Mayorkas because impeachment is EXACTLY what the founders intended for the House to do when a member of the executive branch intentionally violates the laws written by the legislative branch,” Greene said in a post to X.

Eight Republicans joined with all voting Democrats earlier this month to approve a motion that kicked Greene’s previous impeachment resolution to the House Homeland Security Committee, which is already investigating Mayorkas for alleged dereliction of duty in a probe that could lead to impeachment proceedings in the future.

In defending Mayorkas, the Department of Homeland Security has derided what a spokesperson called “reckless impeachment charades” by congressional Republicans. Asked in a recent Bloomberg interview whether the impeachment effort has changed his strategy, Mayorkas shook his head and said, “I am busy at work and incredibly proud to support and work alongside the 260,000 people at the Department of Homeland Security.”

Some of the GOP holdouts have indicated a desire to see Mayorkas impeached, but stressed they want to proceed in a way that is not rushed and ensures a conviction in the Senate — a high bar at the moment as the upper chamber is controlled by the Democrats who are generally aligned with the White House.

Rep. Tom McClintock (R-CA), who was one of the eight, delivered a speech on Wednesday warning Republicans against embracing a “new definition” of impeachment after Democrats ran their “sham impeachments” against former President Donald Trump.

“Many are demanding Mayorkas’ impeachment for ‘failing to maintain operational control of the border,’ as Congresswoman Greene’s resolution puts it. Well, he’s certainly guilty of that, and a whole lot more: maladministration, malfeasance, and neglect of duties on a truly cosmic scale. But these are not impeachable offenses,” he said.

McClintock added later, “By failing to abide by due process and Constitutional constraints, Ms. Greene is tainting this serious impeachment inquiry with a shoot-from-the-hip stunt that is reckless, partisan, and manifestly unserious.”

Greene, who has argued that sending her impeachment articles to committee would effectively “kill” the effort, shot back at McClintock by name in her post to X and insisted the American people “want action” on impeachment.

“These members whine about ‘due process’ while protecting Mayorkas from facing accountability for his violation of our border security laws,” Greene said. “Impeachment IS due process. It would put Mayorkas in front of the Senate to face trial. We’ve seen the evidence of him breaking the law. It’s time for the Senate to try him for it.”
