‘It Will Never Stay Contained’: Matt Walsh Predicts Canada’s Assisted Suicide Regime Will Soon Come To America

Daily Wire host Matt Walsh reacted earlier this week to the rapidly increased cultural acceptance of assisted suicide in Canada and warned that the phenomenon will continue to gain traction in the United States.

The requirements to seek assisted suicide, sometimes called medical assistance in dying, have been relaxed in Canada over the past several years. The practice is currently available only for adults with severe medical conditions but the criteria will soon expand to include people with mental illness. In February, a Canadian parliamentary committee recommended that “mature minors” be allowed to seek assisted suicide even without parental consent.

Walsh noted in a Tuesday episode of “The Matt Walsh Show,” which is now available on Twitter and will soon be accompanied by other Daily Wire streaming content next week, that there exists a logical progression between other perversions of medicine in the Western world to the use of supposed healthcare to kill people.

“Medicine has been inverted in this way in our society for a long time. Euthanasia is just the latest iteration,” Walsh commented. “Some of us, the so-called social conservatives, have been screaming about it from the rooftops for a long time, and we’ve been right all along. We have been right on every major cultural issue, from abortion, to gay marriage, to gender ideology, and we’re right about this too. Euthanasia is a dystopian abomination. It is a war on human life. It is a cancer, and like any cancer, it will never stay contained. It will never stop, it always spreads.”

The conservative commentator and blockbuster documentary maker characterized the practice as “eugenics” targeted toward purported undesirables. Some residents in Canada have requested assisted suicide for reasons such as expected homelessness, and in other instances, government healthcare providers suggested the practice in response to long wait times for medical care. Critics of assisted suicide note that governments with socialized health systems have incentives to promote the procedure rather than fund treatment for certain patients.

“To take care of sick people is expensive, but if you kill them, then you save a bunch of money, it turns out,” Walsh said. “Who cares about human life anyway when there’s money to be saved?”

More than one-quarter of Canadians strongly or moderately agreed that assisted suicide should be made available in the case of homelessness or poverty, according to a recent survey. Nearly half said the same with respect to mental illness. Substantial shares of the Canadian population also reject the notion that parents should receive criminal penalties for helping their children secure assisted suicide.

Walsh argued that the assisted suicide phenomenon in Canada has accelerated because of the nation’s increasingly irreligious culture, a trend also seen in the United States. “Canadians don’t believe in God anymore, at least in a traditional sense. They believe that they are gods,” he continued. “They think that they can change their sex just by wishing for it. God doesn’t choose whether you’re male or female, you get to choose it, and you could change your sex in literally an instant. That’s what they seriously believe, and that’s what everyone on the Left believes, so it’s only natural that a society like that would gradually assume more God-like powers, including the power to decide who dies and when they die.”

Outside of Canada, officials in the Netherlands recently announced greater availability of “life termination” for children between one and twelve years of age. Portions of the United States, such as Oregon and Vermont, have likewise passed bills deregulating or encouraging assisted suicide.

“As always, culturally, we’re on the same track and on the same train as Canada, heading over the same cliff,” Walsh cautioned. “We’re just maybe a few train cars back.”
