About a year ago, I <a href="https://x.com/MattWalshBlog/status/1661477689767919617?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noopener">covered</a> the very sudden rise of euthanasia in Canada. As of 2022, the most recent year we have <a href="https://www.canada.ca/en/health-canada/services/publications/health-system-services/annual-report-medical-assistance-dying-2022.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">data</a> available, euthanasia is now the fifth-leading cause of death in Canada, accounting for one out of every 25 fatalities. That&#8217;s ahead of common conditions like liver disease, influenza, diabetes, and Alzheimer&#8217;s.
The number of so-called &#8220;assisted deaths&#8221; rose by more than 30% year-over-year, although precise metrics are getting hard to track. That&#8217;s because, going forward, Canada <a href="https://x.com/StatCan_eng/status/1729539259076334034?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noopener">says</a> euthanasia deaths won&#8217;t be recorded as deaths caused by euthanasia. Instead, whatever reason the patient provides for seeking euthanasia will be recorded as the cause of death. So if you have a doctor kill you because you have arthritis, in Canada, that&#8217;s now classified as a death due to arthritis.
This coverup, like everything that has ever been attempted by the Canadian government, has failed miserably. Euthanasia is such an obviously booming industry that funeral homes have started <a href="https://www.city-journal.org/article/canadian-death-cult#:~:text=In%202022%2C%204.1%20percent%20of,Parliament%20first%20introduced%20MAID%20legislation." target="_blank" rel="noopener">offering</a> so-called &#8220;turn-key&#8221; <a href="https://plus.lapresse.ca/screens/f514affe-77c3-4052-ba88-e327c9ec6dc5%7C_0.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">bundles</a>, in which people can kill themselves and then have a burial, all for one low price. There&#8217;s no need to have a terminal illness, either. Some Canadians are killing themselves because they <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12248669/Euthanasia-tightens-grip-West-Shocking-rise-doctor-assisted-suicides.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">say</a> it&#8217;s easier than getting disability benefits. The Canadian state-owned media loves this, of course. They <a href="https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/medically-assisted-death-could-save-millions-1.3947481" target="_blank" rel="noopener">claim</a> that euthanasia can save &#8220;millions&#8221; in health care costs.
This isn&#8217;t just happening in Canada. All over the western world, euthanasia is now more common than it&#8217;s ever been. The number of British citizens who signed up for &#8220;Dignitas,&#8221; a Swiss nonprofit that <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-47158287" target="_blank" rel="noopener">performs</a> euthanasia, increased by nearly 25% in 2023. In Switzerland, assisted deaths <a href="https://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/life-aging/swiss-assisted-suicides-rose-11-in-2023/49198616" target="_blank" rel="noopener">jumped</a> by 11% last year. Meanwhile in Belgium, assisted suicide <a href="https://www.vrt.be/vrtnws/en/2024/02/27/euthanasia-cases-increase-by-15-per-cent-in-belgium-in-2023/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">increased</a> by more than 15%. Overall in Europe and Canada, euthanasia rates have increased by a quarter in just about 12 months.

Over in South Australia, &#8220;medical assistance in dying&#8221; was <a href="https://www.gogentleaustralia.org.au/south_australia_marks_one_year_of_voluntary_assisted_dying#:~:text=%E2%80%9CWe%20know%20from%20other%20states,died%2C%20110%20from%20VAD%20administration." target="_blank" rel="noopener">legalized</a> a year ago, and the numbers of death permits they&#8217;re issuing are <a href="https://www.gogentleaustralia.org.au/latest_figures_from_south_australia_show_steady_increase_in_vad_permits" target="_blank" rel="noopener">increasing</a> at a rate of around 20% per quarter. And those numbers are going to continue to rise, in part because the public broadcaster in Australia is running segments like this promoting euthanasia. Watch:

Make a difference in someone&#8217;s life today, by killing them. Give them a little something &#8220;extra.&#8221; That&#8217;s the pitch in Australia, and it&#8217;s working.
As you&#8217;d expect, as euthanasia becomes more and more common all over the world, we&#8217;re hearing more disturbing stories.
For example, there was the Canadian woman who was <a href="https://globalnews.ca/news/10118619/bc-cancer-agency-wait-times-surgery-united-states/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">diagnosed</a> with cancer, only to be told by her doctors that she should consider euthanasia. She refused and fled to the United States, where she paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to receive treatment. Those are the kind of stories that make you realize there are a lot of very sick people in countries like Canada who don&#8217;t have a lot of money lying around. And they&#8217;re probably killing themselves. 
It&#8217;s hard to imagine this trend getting any more bleak but somehow, it does.
There&#8217;s an incredible new <a href="https://www.thefp.com/p/im-28-and-im-scheduled-to-die?r=8ivfe&amp;utm_campaign=post&amp;utm_medium=web&amp;triedRedirect=true">story</a> in the Free Press about a 28-year-old woman in The Netherlands named Zoraya ter Beek. She plans to have a medical professional kill her sometime in May. That&#8217;s not because she has any kind of terminal illness. Instead, she&#8217;s been diagnosed with depression, autism, and borderline personality disorder. And on that basis, even though she lives in a nice house, with her boyfriend and her cats, she wants to die.
This woman appears to mean what she&#8217;s saying. She&#8217;s been highly visible in the Dutch press for many years, going as far back as 2017. And every time she&#8217;s appeared since then, she&#8217;s been promoting the idea of euthanasia or dying in some way. 
For example, in 2017, a Dutch website profiled Zoraya, <a href="https://www.rtlnieuws.nl/editienl/laatste-videos-editienl/video/50121/zoraya-22-draagt-niet-reanimerenpenning-respecteer" target="_blank" rel="noopener">writing</a>: 
<blockquote>Zoraya is 22 and does not want to be resuscitated if something happens to her. And of course she gets comments about that. More and more people are deciding to wear a do-not-resuscitate badge.</blockquote>
That same year, another Dutch outlet wrote an <a href="https://www.pzc.nl/bizar/zonder-juiste-medicijnen-wil-zoraya-22-uit-oldenzaal-niet-verder-leven~a6575e9e/?referrer=https%3A%2F%2Ft.co%2F" target="_blank" rel="noopener">article</a> about how Zoraya was planning her funeral.
Additionally, Zoraya has provided the Free Press with a photograph of the coffin she plans to use, including a picture of herself in the coffin. She also posted extensively about her plans on social media.
Confronted with all of this, Zoraya&#8217;s psychiatrists didn&#8217;t suggest any alternative. Instead, they told her she was doomed: 
<blockquote>[Zoraya] recalled her psychiatrist telling her that they had tried everything, that &#8216;there’s nothing more we can do for you. It’s never gonna get any better.&#8217;</blockquote>
It&#8217;s hard to sum up the agenda of the pharmaceutical companies and the medical industry any better than that one line. &#8220;There&#8217;s nothing more we can do for you. It&#8217;s never gonna get any better.&#8221; I&#8217;m sure that&#8217;s a paraphrase, but it&#8217;s horrifying. This is a woman who&#8217;s not even 30-years-old and who has no physical issues whatsoever. Every single problem she has is in her head — and very vaguely defined. 
A term like “borderline personality disorder” is one we’re accustomed to hearing — and that many people have been diagnosed with — but very rarely does anyone stop to ask any fundamental questions about it. Questions like: How exactly can you diagnose a “personality” as “disordered.” What is a properly ordered personality? What personality is this woman supposed to have? Well, never mind. Whatever these disorders are, her doctors have prescribed suicide to cure them.
Because this is what happens now if the antidepressant drugs don’t work. Now they have another drug to permanently &#8220;fix&#8221; the problem. And conveniently, the same companies selling the antidepressants are also making the drugs that help kill people who realize the antidepressants don&#8217;t work too well. A company called Valeant Pharmaceuticals, now known as Bausch Health, made the <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/magazine/2019/12/11/my-terminally-ill-mother-wanted-end-her-own-life-what-would-it-take-fulfill-her-last-wish/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">most commonly</a> used drug in physician-assisted suicides, called Seconal. As it happens, that same company also makes Wellbutrin, the 18th-most prescribed medicine in the United States, with millions of prescriptions. When it came out, it was billed as a second-line, heavy-hitting antidepressant that&#8217;s supposed to work where first-line SSRIs fail. But in the event the second-line antidepressant fails, now we know what the third line is. They&#8217;ll just kill you.

That should disturb most people. But it doesn&#8217;t — at least, not everywhere. One of the most revealing aspects of this Free Press article has been the reaction to it. In The Netherlands, there was outrage — not at the medical industry, but at the Free Press for covering the story. Zoraya shut down her social media accounts, claiming the Free Press article misrepresented her, without explaining how. A lot of her supporters in The Netherlands were also furious with the piece, saying it was a distorted view of what they call &#8220;medical assistance in dying.&#8221;
But in America, the reaction was different. Instead of writing puff pieces about Zoraya&#8217;s decision, many mainstream outlets presented it accurately — as a horrifying crime against humanity, and a betrayal of the most basic principle of medicine. 
Here&#8217;s how the author of The Free Press piece, Rupa Subramanya, <a href="https://x.com/rupasubramanya/status/1774949448956649542?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noopener">put it on X</a>: 
<blockquote>I&#8217;ve been struck by the reactions so far, some of which I anticipated. North Americans generally tend to be horrified at the Dutch acceptance of the right to die even for someone who is not terminally ill or their acceptance that there should be a more humane to commit suicide even when euthanasia is legal. The Dutch I spoke to find North Americans very conservative and religious when it comes to life and death.
The Netherlands is a post-religious society, and the comments from there are 180 degrees from what I&#8217;m getting from people in North America. We&#8217;re living in two different epistemic worlds at the same point in time, in cultures that descend from fundamentally the same Western roots coming from the Renaissance, the Enlightenment, and the Protestant Reformation. There is overwhelming support for euthanasia, assisted dying and a more humane way to commit suicide in The Netherlands than anywhere else in the Western world.</blockquote>
What this tells us is that the contagion that has now completely overtaken Europe, and in particular countries like The Netherlands, may be reversible in this country. It may not have completely taken hold here. And there are other signs of that, as well.
For example, late last year, the American Medical Association&#8217;s house of delegates <a href="https://www.ncregister.com/cna/american-medical-association-retains-opposition-to-assisted-suicide" target="_blank" rel="noopener">considered</a> a resolution that would have officially endorsed the practice of euthanasia. Given the extent of the barbaric medical practices the AMA endorses already, it seemed likely that this resolution would pass. But as the National Catholic Register <a href="https://www.ncregister.com/cna/american-medical-association-retains-opposition-to-assisted-suicide" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reports</a>:
<blockquote>The House of Delegates of the American Medical Association &#8230; rebuffed an effort to change the organization’s current stance in opposition to physician-assisted suicide, a development that drew praise from members of the Catholic Medical Association, which advocated against the change.</blockquote>
This is a victory, obviously. But the fact this resolution was even proposed, and seriously considered, tells us we&#8217;re not very far removed from The Netherlands. It suggests that, unless the underlying causes of this trend are resolved, it will overtake this country as well. And the underlying causes — the reason young people are killing themselves — is that hope and a sense of purpose are becoming rare in modern society. That&#8217;s true both here and in Europe.
Now that euthanasia offers a seemingly easy and &#8220;painless&#8221; way out, more and more people, at younger and younger ages, will take advantage of it. They&#8217;ll be put on antidepressants that don&#8217;t work, and then suicide drugs after that. Somehow, the drug companies will suggest that, even though they&#8217;ve sold SSRIs that accomplish nothing, you should still trust them when they say that their euthanasia drug is the solution.
This is a pitch that only works when people have been lied to for years, and become profoundly confused about this basic fact: Life is not easy. Nobody is happy all the time. But we are alive for a reason. If we feel like life is meaningless, it’s not because life has no meaning, it’s just that we struggle to see it. The solution is to help those people see the meaning in life.
Pharma companies like Bausch Health are not providing that solution. They aren’t trying to help people in their despair. They’re only trying to profit off of it.

Western civilization has a major problem: Every societal ill that had been taken off the table by generations of received wisdom has now come back and come roaring back to life stronger than ever. 
The latest example of this is exemplified in a <a href="https://www.thefp.com/p/im-28-and-im-scheduled-to-die">piece</a> by Rupa Subramanya in Bari Weiss’ Free Press that speaks of the spates of suicide and euthanasia growing in the West. 
The piece speaks of Zoraya ter Beek, 28, who expects to be euthanized in early May and plans to be cremated:
<blockquote>She said she was hobbled by her depression and autism and borderline personality disorder. Now she was tired of living—despite, she said, being in love with her boyfriend, a 40-year-old IT programmer, and living in a nice house with their two cats. 
She recalled her psychiatrist telling her that they had tried everything, that “there’s nothing more we can do for you. It’s never gonna get any better.” At that point, she said, she decided to die. “I was always very clear that if it doesn’t get better, I can’t do this anymore.”</blockquote>
She is not the only one, unfortunately. Euthanasia is becoming incredibly common across the West. 
In the United States, euthanasia has jumped from 2018 to 2021 by 53% and in Canada by 125%.
Increasingly, the West is legalizing euthanasia for people who are clearly not terminal. For example, Lauren Hoeve. As the piece explains: 

<blockquote>On November 30, 2022, Hoeve, a Dutch YouTube creator who was then 27, took to her newly created blog, Brain Fog, to <a href="https://hersenmist.wordpress.com/2022/11/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announce</a> that she wanted to die. She explained that she had autism, ADHD, ARFID (a.k.a. avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder), depression, anxiety, a “history of complex trauma,” and, since 2019, myalgic encephalomyelitis, or chronic fatigue syndrome. She added that she had registered with the <a href="https://expertisecentrumeuthanasie.nl/en/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Euthanasia Expertise Center</a>, in The Hague, to get the ball rolling.</blockquote>
She then committed suicide. She was 28. 
This sort of stuff is becoming more and more common. 
And it&#8217;s not just this social malady that is plaguing the West. Drug abuse is plaguing the West. 128 million Americans report having used marijuana at some point in their lifetime. It&#8217;s worth noting that marijuana today is significantly more addictive and more dangerous than marijuana when you were a kid. 
Pornography is not only widespread in its availability, but also in its use and its addiction. The latest stats show that about 70% of American men view pornography. 24% of American women say they view pornography as well. The number of people who admit to being addicted is actually quite high. The impacts of pornography on the human brain are very much like drug addiction. There&#8217;s a dopamine release, it wears off, and then people want more of the dopamine. And so they go back to the pornography. 
This empties out relations. It destroys the relationship between men and women. Men begin to see women as sexual objects in a way different than would normally be the case. It disconnects them from other human beings.

We see this with regard to major societal issues like family formation and childbearing. 31% of women aged 30 to 34 in the United States are childless now, which is much higher than ever in the United States. When it comes to LGBTQ+- identity, fully 22.3% of Gen Z say they are LGBTQ+- .
That has tremendous societal impact. It turns out that when one-fifth of your population suggests that they are no longer going to engage in monogamous heterosexual relationships with the goal of family formation, it has a major impact on your civilization. 
So what exactly is going on? Why are all of these social maladies suddenly cropping up? Social epidemics are spreading through the population like wildfire. But in order for that epidemic to actually take hand, the systemic immunity of a society has to be compromised. 
What was the immunity to all of these sorts of bad ideas? The answer for literally hundreds of years was religion. Not just because people believed in God, but because there are two particular facts about religion that are deeply necessary to understand the beneficial and salutary effects of religion on a society. 
One: Religion takes certain moral matters off the table. It says, “God says X, therefore don&#8217;t do X.” Why is that important? It&#8217;s important because when you&#8217;re talking about time-tested wisdom, one reason why any society might say something like, “God says &#8216;thou shalt not murder&#8217;” is because it takes the subject off the table for debate. Once God says it, you don&#8217;t need to come up with an independent rationale as to why it&#8217;s not okay to murder. 
The reality is that when it comes to the vast majority of rules we abide by in society, those are rules not because somebody sat somewhere in a cave and came up with a rationale for the rule, but because over trial and error, over evolutionary long periods of time, those are rules that have been found to be effective. 
You don&#8217;t have to explain why it works. You just have to know that it does work.
One of the great lies that the Enlightenment told us is that every single thing that was good required a rationale. 
That’s not even the same way that science typically works. People tend to think that science works by having a theoretician in the lab who comes up with a theory and then the theory has practical ramifications. 
Very often it&#8217;s the reverse. Very often the inventions that we use come from someone tinkering in their garage and doing trial and error until something worked. They may not even know why it worked. They just know that it did. 
That’s the first thing religion does. 
The second thing it does is to create the social fabric necessary to enforce those rules without a top-down state. It creates the intermediate institutions of society that act as an enforcement mechanism. 
If you violate the rule of society, for example, that says that you should get married and have kids and live within the boundaries of the church, the rest of the members of the church might not want you at the church. You&#8217;re not going to be part of that particular social fabric. 
That is necessary. Any society has to have rules that are enforced by social censure.
But both of the things religion provided have been dissolved. We have become the “touch the stove” civilization. 
When you teach your very young kids to avoid touching the stove you don&#8217;t explain, “Certain objects are hot. When you touch a hot object, you get burned.” You say, “Don&#8217;t touch the stove. And if you touch the stove, there will be a consequence.” 
We as a society have decided that anything we can&#8217;t explain requires us to touch the stove. So we&#8217;re going to touch the stove on everything. 
So things that we&#8217;re just common-sense propositions — such as “It is good that you get married and have children” — we as a society decided to ask, “Why not alternatives? What&#8217;s wrong with alternatives? Why can&#8217;t all alternatives be treated as perfectly equivalent?” 
The answer to that is that it fails. Society fails when you don&#8217;t have man, woman, child. End of story. Societies that don&#8217;t focus on man, woman, child fall apart because that is the basis of every functional civilization. But we decided because we couldn’t come up with a rationale, why we shouldn&#8217;t we have man, man, no child, or woman, woman, no child?
We touched the stove. The result is widespread childlessness; breakdown in family formation, destruction of existing families, children born into families where they&#8217;re not really families, just a mom and a kid, because dad is nowhere to be seen.
That has resulted in many more social maladies. We had to touch the stove when it came to drug use. We as a society had decided that it would be bad if huge swaths of the population ingested hallucinogenic drugs.

And then we decided, well, what if we tried it? What if we touch the stove? Maybe it&#8217;ll be fine. How do we know? 
And so the time-tested wisdom that favored sobriety was thrown out the window in favor of something different. Has it been salutary in its effect on young Americans? I would suggest the answer is no. 
We used to say that engaging in pornography ought to be illicit, that it is bad that when you view pornography, it does something to your brain that is not good, it perverts your view of the opposite sex, of sex itself and of relationships. And then we decided, “Oh, but really, is it going to be that bad? What, are you just a prude, man? Can you find a rationale for your prudishness?”
The response used to be, “I don&#8217;t have to find a rationale. It&#8217;s gross and bad and you shouldn&#8217;t do it. It&#8217;s bad for your soul, and it&#8217;s bad for you.”
And that was accepted wisdom for literally hundreds of years.
And then we decided to touch the stove and find out what happens.
This has had incredibly negative effects on our civilization.

A 28-year-old Dutch woman has decided to die by <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/euthanasia">euthanasia</a> because she says she&#8217;s <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/depression">depressed</a>.
Zoraya ter Beek lives in a small village in the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/netherlands">Netherlands</a> near the German border with her boyfriend and two cats in a nice home. She has scheduled her death date for May and spoke with <a href="https://www.thefp.com/p/im-28-and-im-scheduled-to-die">The Free Press</a> about her <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/social-issues">decision</a> despite being physically healthy.
Ter Beek says she was studying to become a psychiatrist but was never able to finish school due to mental health issues, plus having autism and borderline personality disorder, the outlet notes.
She said her psychiatrist told her, “There’s nothing more we can do for you. It’s never gonna get any better.”
“I was always very clear that if it doesn’t get better, I can’t do this anymore,” ter Beek said.
The Netherlands native reviewed the process, saying she’ll be administered a sedative before getting a lethal injection at home on her couch. “The doctor really takes her time. It is not that they walk in and say: lay down please! Most of the time it is first a cup of coffee to settle the nerves and create a soft atmosphere,” ter Beek explained. 
She continued, “Then she asks if I am ready. I will take my place on the couch. She will once again ask if I am sure, and she will start up the procedure and wish me a good journey. Or, in my case, a nice nap, because I hate it if people say, ‘Safe journey.’ I’m not going anywhere.”
“I’m a little afraid of dying, because it’s the ultimate unknown,” she said. “We don’t really know what’s next—or is there nothing? That’s the scary part.”

The Netherlands was the first country in the world to make euthanasia legal in 2001, the outlet noted.
“I’m seeing euthanasia as some sort of acceptable option brought to the table by physicians, by psychiatrists, when previously it was the ultimate last resort,” Stef Groenewoud, a health care ethicist at Theological University Kampen in the Netherlands, told The Free Press.
“I see the phenomenon especially in people with psychiatric diseases, and especially young people with psychiatric disorders, where the health care professional seems to give up on them more easily than before,” she continued.
There were 8,720 euthanasia deaths in the Netherlands in 2022, accounting for around 5% of all the country’s deaths, per <a href="https://www.dutchnews.nl/2023/04/more-euthanasia-cases-in-2022-29-couples-helped-to-die/#google_vignette">DutchNews</a>. This represented a 4% increase from the previous year.
Last year, officials in the Netherlands also <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/dutch-government-makes-life-termination-available-for-children-as-young-as-one-year-old">expanded</a> the availability of “life termination” for children between one and twelve years of age for reasons of “hopeless and unbearable suffering.”

Minnesota moved one step closer this week to legalizing assisted suicide for terminally ill people.
A Minnesota bill that would allow terminally ill people to ingest deadly drugs to end their lives <a href="https://www.house.mn.gov/hjvid/93/897084" target="_blank" rel="noopener">passed</a> the House Health Finance and Policy Committee on Thursday in a 10-5 vote, meaning it advances to the Public Safety Committee.
The <a href="https://www.billtrack50.com/billdetail/1575278" target="_blank" rel="noopener">bill</a>, called the &#8220;End of Life Options Act,&#8221; or HF1930, would allow an adult 18 or older who is diagnosed with a terminal illness and given six months or less to live to self-administer drugs to kill themselves.
A person who wants these drugs must have the mental capacity to give their informed consent — people with dementia would not qualify — and they must be able to self-administer the drugs. At least two healthcare providers, including one physician, must evaluate the person and agree they meet the criteria.
Ten states and Washington, D.C. already <a href="https://apnews.com/article/minnesota-assisted-suicide-medical-aid-dying-835b13e42cfd424218b69f727632a291" target="_blank" rel="noopener">allow</a> some form of assisted suicide. Oregon was the first state to legalize it in 1994. In New York, an assisted suicide bill is stalled but slowly gaining momentum among lawmakers.
The Minnesota bill&#8217;s author, state Representative Mike Freiberg, a Democrat, has been pushing the bill for nearly a decade and said he is hopeful it will pass this year. Freiberg said the bill has around 25 cosponsors and that the &#8220;pro-choice majority&#8221; in both of Minnesota&#8217;s legislative chambers &#8220;certainly helps its chances,&#8221; adding that the bill is about &#8220;bodily autonomy&#8221; at a press conference before the committee vote.
The bill does not have a residency requirement, meaning Minnesota could become a destination for people seeking assisted suicide.
&#8220;We don&#8217;t put residency requirements in place for medical procedures, and that&#8217;s what this is, a medical procedure,&#8221; Freiberg said.
Several terminally ill people spoke in support of the bill at the press conference.
&#8220;If there are no more treatment options then I deserve more death options,&#8221; said Nancy Uden, who has terminal cancer and says she is &#8220;not afraid of death, but I am afraid of how I will die.&#8221;
A man with terminal cancer who described himself as a &#8220;lifelong Republican&#8221; said that 13 months ago he was given 12 months to live and he is now expected to live into 2025, but &#8220;I want to decide when I&#8217;ve had enough.&#8221;
The bill is <a href="https://ethicalcaremn.org/alliance-partners/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">opposed</a> by at least 66 organizations that advocate for ethical health care, some of which testified later at the committee <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sGYVy4Z_9Uw" target="_blank" rel="noopener">hearing</a>, where hundreds of people packed into the room for nearly five hours.
At the hearing, debate among lawmakers grew heated at times, with the committee&#8217;s chairwoman, a Democrat, at one point telling Republican Representative Anne Neu Brindley to &#8220;calm down.&#8221;
A number of terminally ill people vehemently opposed the bill at the hearing.
Jean Swenson, a woman who <a href="https://ethicalcaremn.org/stories/jean/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">became</a> paralyzed from the neck down in a 1980 car crash, spoke against the bill.
&#8220;I fell into a deep depression, and I just wanted to die,&#8221; she told the committee, &#8220;but I&#8217;m so grateful that assisted suicide was not available and that those around me listened to me &#8230; and then gave me what I really needed — good medical care, counseling, access to disability services, and lots of prayer and loving support.&#8221;
&#8220;When a person is facing overwhelming problems, we need to eliminate the problems, not the person,&#8221; she said.
“Intentionally ending a human life is wrong. It doesn’t matter what name we call it,” testified Chris Massoglia of Americans United for Life. “Suicide is not healthcare. And it’s completely unnecessary due to the advances in palliative and end-of-life care.”
Some critics warned that while only terminally ill people would currently qualify, other places such as Canada have <a href="https://apnews.com/article/covid-science-health-toronto-7c631558a457188d2bd2b5cfd360a867" target="_blank" rel="noopener">expanded</a> their assisted suicide laws to include disabled people. Others worried that money could play a role in whether someone chooses to end their life.
&#8220;Economic disparities make it less likely that patients can afford life-saving treatment and more likely that doctors will &#8216;write off&#8217; patients as terminal and thus eligible for assisted suicide,&#8221; testified Anita Cameron, director of minority outreach for Not Dead Yet, a disability rights organization.
John Kelly, a paralyzed quadriplegic and Not Dead Yet&#8217;s New England regional director argued in prepared testimony provided to The Daily Wire that assisted suicide is often about control <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/death-with-dignity-laws-and-the-desire-to-control-how-ones-life-ends/2016/10/24/6882d1e6-9629-11e6-bc79-af1cd3d2984b_story.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">rather than pain</a> and that terminal diagnoses are often wrong.
Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life&#8217;s communications director Paul Stark said the bill does not provide safeguards to prevent coercion after the deadly drugs are prescribed, and no one is required to witness the death. He also noted that the bill does not require a psychiatric evaluation.
&#8220;Whenever we offer death as a solution to problems, we lose our incentive to solve the root causes of those problems, and we send the message that some lives aren&#8217;t worth living,&#8221; Stark told The Daily Wire.

A 19-year-old female has been effectively sentenced to her death after a judge decided that the experts know best, rejecting the young woman&#8217;s pleas to live.
The Christian teenager — whom the world is only allowed to know as &#8220;ST,&#8221; per the courts — <a href="https://christianconcern.com/news/judge-rules-conscious-19-year-old-cant-make-end-of-life-decisions/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">suffers</a> from a rare genetic mitochondrial disease, which causes chronic muscle weakness, loss of hearing, and damage to the kidneys; she&#8217;s currently dependent on regular dialysis, a feeding tube, and other intensive care. Notably, though, ST&#8217;s mental capacity is not affected by the disease.
The teenager wants to fight until her last day, and has repeatedly told medical professionals that she wants to seek experimental treatment outside of the U.K. The U.K.&#8217;s National Health Service (NHS), though, wants to remove the teen from life-saving medical treatment, which would condemn her to death, potentially in a matter of days.
In fact, the NHS Trust, apparently perturbed that this youth wouldn&#8217;t take their advice and just die already, went to court in April to argue that the teen is not capable of making her own medical decisions. The Trust, comprised of NHS bureaucrats, successfully argued before a judge that the teen was delusional for not agreeing with her doctors that she has no hope and needs to just agree to die.
Here&#8217;s what the judge, Mrs. Justice Roberts, wrote in her judgment, which was issued in late August:
&#8220;In my judgment [&#8230;] ST is unable to make a decision for herself in relation to her future medical treatment, including the proposed move to palliative care, because she does not believe the information she has been given by her doctors.&#8221;
The judge went on to say that ST isn&#8217;t merely making an &#8220;unwise&#8221; decision, which she would supposedly permit. But the teen is instead making an unacceptable choice, in the judge&#8217;s view, since in ST&#8217;s thought process, she is not affirming that her doctors are correct.
In other words, ST has committed a thought crime by not trusting the experts. And, thus, she is &#8220;delusional&#8221; and barred from making her own medical decisions.
Keep in mind, two psychologists — two experts, if you will — have determined that ST is in control of her mental faculties and can make these vital decisions for herself.
&#8220;Despite all the difficulties which currently confront her, ST is able to communicate reasonably well with her doctors with assistance from her mother and, on occasion, speech therapists,&#8221; the judge acknowledged. &#8220;I heard evidence from two consultant psychiatrists whose conclusions in relation to her capacity in both domains are set out in full written reports. &#8230; the two most recent capacity reports from Dr C and Dr D (both consultant psychiatrists who assessed ST in the days leading up to the hearing) suggested that she had capacity to make these choices for herself. The Trust, relying on the evidence of her treating clinicians, takes a different view.&#8221;
Those two experts&#8217; opinions, apparently, don&#8217;t hold as much weight as the NHS Trust.
According to Catholic news outlet <a href="https://www.thetablet.co.uk/news/17580/-perilous-ruling-on-dying-19-year-old-s-capacity-to-decide" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Tablet</a>, her parents also disagree with the judge, “We are very distressed by this injustice, and we hope that, by Jesus’s grace, this will be corrected on appeal.”
Now, the Court of Protection gets to decide what to do with ST&#8217;s care, and it&#8217;s not looking good.
Notably, ST&#8217;s diagnosis is the same diagnosis as a London infant named <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/charlies-law-parents-baby-charlie-gard-getting-amanda-prestigiacomo" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Charlie Gard</a>. In Gard&#8217;s tragic case, courts ordered the baby&#8217;s parents, Connie Yates and Chris Gard, to bypass possibly life-saving experimental treatment for their infant son; they were forced to watch baby Charlie die in a London hospital.
Charlie, just a baby, couldn&#8217;t speak for himself. But in ST&#8217;s case, she can — and she continues to do so.
&#8220;By the time you read this, I could be dead. That&#8217;s according to my doctors who, for the last year, have repeatedly told me that I have had only days to live. But I am a fighter and will continue to fight,&#8221; the defiant teen <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12496945/EXCLUSIVE-doctors-insist-time-died-fight-Extraordinary-battle-19-year-old-woman-suffering-Charlie-Gard-condition-battling-medics-attempts-condemn-death.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> The Daily Mail this week.

ST noted that she is unable to publicly speak about her case, as per the court order supposedly meant to protect her. This means it&#8217;s been impossible for ST to fundraise for the potential or receive experimental treatment, which has been offered to her in both Canada and the U.S. And at the very least, it keeps her family financially strapped as they continue to try to appeal and fight for their daughter&#8217;s life.
&#8216;They&#8217;ve done everything they can to stop me telling this story,&#8221; ST said. &#8220;I have found myself trapped in a medical and legal system governed by a toxic paternalism which has condemned me for wanting to live.&#8221;
Still, the resilient teen, buoyed by her tight family and her Christian faith, is determined to fight until the end.
&#8220;I am in a race against time to escape from this system and the certain death it wishes to impose on me,&#8221; she said. &#8220;But I am a fighter and will continue to fight. I trust in God and will not give up hope.&#8221;

A self-described &#8220;transsexual&#8221; male who had surgery in 2009 to invert his penis into an imitation vagina has experienced such constant pain that he asked Canada’s MAID (medical assistance in dying) program for permission to be euthanized — and was rejected.
Lois Cardinal, 35, who describes himself as a “sterilized First Nations post-op transsexual,” petitioned the MAID program, with his doctor writing that his problem was “pain/anxiety related to neo-vagina for gender affirmation.”
The doctor then referred Cardinal to another doctor, who wrote, “Based on current clinical information and consultations [the patient] does not meet current MAiD criteria,” adding, “Can be reassessed in future if change in clinical status.”
“Canadian law doesn’t require those who want to be killed to access such care,” Wesley J. Smith noted at <a href="https://www.nationalreview.com/corner/transgender-woman-denied-euthanasia-in-canada-over-post-surgical-pain-and-regret/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">National Review</a>. “To the contrary, ‘irremediable suffering’ is based on the patient’s perspective, not the unavailability of palliative or treatment interventions.”
“I’m in constant discomfort and pain,” Cardinal informed <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12349523/Trans-indigenous-Canadian-slams-doctors-denying-euthanasia-request-saying-death-free-agony-surgically-built-vagina.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Daily Mail</a>. “It’s taking this psychological burden on me. George Carey, a retired bishop who previously led the <a href="http://dailywire.com/topic/christianity" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Church</a> of England, exhorted <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/united-kingdom" target="_blank" rel="noopener">British</a> Parliament this week to consider expanding access to <a href="http://dailywire.com/topic/euthanasia" target="_blank" rel="noopener">assisted suicide</a>.
The requirements to seek assisted suicide, sometimes called &#8220;medical assistance in dying,&#8221; have been significantly relaxed in Canada and other Western nations over the past several years. Carey, who served as archbishop of Canterbury from 1991 to 2002, said in a <a href="https://committees.parliament.uk/writtenevidence/116625/default/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">submission</a> to Parliament that “palliative care and assisted dying can and must exist alongside each other in order to offer dying people meaningful choices at the end of life.”
“It is profoundly Christian to do all we can to ensure nobody suffers against their wishes,” said the theologian, who oversaw the ordination of the first female priests in the denomination. “Some people believe they will find meaning in their own suffering in their final months and weeks of life. I respect that, but it cannot be justified to expect others to share that belief.”
Carey also appeared to reverse his past opposition to assisted suicide laws, contending that the matter is more complex than he previously acknowledged, as well as claiming that the Church of England should not be “putting dogma before the needs of people and that “the sufferer himself” is the “only person” whose desires matter with respect to their lives.
“We were all aware that the Bible contributes nothing directly to this debate. There is nothing in Holy Writ, or in the two thousand years of Christian teaching, that bore directly on this modern problem, largely created by the success of modern science and improved health care,” he remarked. “Furthermore, I began to see that statements like ‘life is sacred’ and ‘thou shalt not kill’ were too broad as principles to be relevant to the issue.”
The endorsement of assisted suicide laws from Carey occurs shortly after Anglican ministers met in Rwanda to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/conservative-anglicans-rebuke-english-communions-approval-of-same-sex-marriage" target="_blank" rel="noopener">rebuke</a> the Church of England’s recent commitment to endorse same-sex marriages. Bishops and other church officials noted the theologically liberal drift of the historic denomination and rejected Justin Welby, the current archbishop of Canterbury, as the “first among equals” for bishops in the worldwide Anglican Communion.
Critics of the procedure <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/holds-autonomy-as-the-highest-virtue-christian-physician-reacts-as-canada-erodes-limits-on-assisted-suicide-for-teens" target="_blank" rel="noopener">argue</a> that governments with socialized medical systems have clear incentives to promote the practice rather than funding treatment for certain patients, thereby overlooking the innate value of human beings and their fundamental right to life.
Carey specifically endorsed policies which verify that “the person is not choosing between care and death but between two types of dying.” Assisted suicide is presently <a href="https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/euthanasia-and-assisted-suicide/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">illegal</a> in the United Kingdom; euthanasia, defined as the act of deliberately ending a person&#8217;s life to relieve suffering as opposed to helping another person kill themselves, is punishable with life imprisonment.
Officials in Canada recently expanded the nation’s assisted suicide laws to include people with mental illnesses, while a legislative committee <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/canada-moves-toward-assisted-suicide-for-minors-critics-erupt" target="_blank" rel="noopener">recommended</a> that “mature minors” be allowed to seek assisted suicide even without parental consent. More than one-quarter of Canadians strongly or moderately agreed that assisted suicide should be made available in the case of homelessness or poverty in one recent <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/shocking-number-of-canadians-support-allowing-assisted-suicide-for-homelessness-poverty" target="_blank" rel="noopener">survey</a>, while nearly half said the same with respect to mental illness. “Medicine has been inverted in this way in our society for a long time. Euthanasia is just the latest iteration,” Walsh commented. “Some of us, the so-called social conservatives, have been screaming about it from the rooftops for a long time, and we’ve been right all along. We have been right on every major cultural issue, from abortion, to gay marriage, to gender ideology, and we’re right about this too. Euthanasia is a dystopian abomination. It is a war on human life. They believe that they are gods,” he continued. “They think that they can change their sex just by wishing for it. God doesn’t choose whether you’re male or female, you get to choose it, and you could change your sex in literally an instant. That’s what they seriously believe, and that’s what everyone on the Left believes, so it’s only natural that a society like that would gradually assume more God-like powers, including the power to decide who dies and when they die.”

Assisted suicide, sometimes called medical assistance in dying, has been increasingly deregulated in Canada over the past several years. The practice is currently available only for adults with severe medical conditions despite recent <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/canada-moves-toward-assisted-suicide-for-minors-critics-erupt" target="_blank" rel="noopener">moves</a> to increase access for minors.
When asked whether assisted suicide should be made available in the case of homelessness, 11% of survey respondents said they “strongly agree,” and 17% said they “moderately agree.” Similar shares believe the same with respect to poverty: 11% of respondents “strongly agree” that destitution can serve as grounds for assisted suicide, while 16% “moderately agree.”
The poll comes as multiple accounts of residents who turn to assisted suicide because of their dire financial straits capture worldwide attention. Amir Farsoud, who receives government assistance for his chronic back pain and was informed that the home he shared with two other people was listed for sale, applied for medical assistance in dying to avoid homelessness and received approval from one physician. Strangers <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/canadian-man-changes-mind-about-assisted-suicide-after-good-samaritans-step-in" target="_blank" rel="noopener">fundraised</a> more than $44,000 online when his story made international news, prompting him to change his mind.
Critics of the procedure <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/holds-autonomy-as-the-highest-virtue-christian-physician-reacts-as-canada-erodes-limits-on-assisted-suicide-for-teens" target="_blank" rel="noopener">argue</a> that governments with socialized medical systems have clear incentives to promote the practice rather than funding treatment for certain patients, thereby overlooking the innate value of human beings and their fundamental right to life.
Nearly half of the respondents also said that mental illness should render one available to receive assisted suicide. Some 16% said they “strongly agree,” while 27% said they “moderately agree,” outweighing the share of respondents who either “moderately disagree” or “strongly disagree.”
Canada indeed implemented amendments to the nation’s criminal code that would increase the availability of assisted suicide such that a citizen with only a “mental illness” can request euthanasia starting next year, whereas the practice was previously limited to people with serious physical illnesses. “You do not need to have a fatal or terminal condition to be eligible for medical assistance in dying,” according to a <a href="https://www.canada.ca/en/health-canada/services/medical-assistance-dying.html#a2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">webpage</a> published by the nation’s government.
Another question on the survey asked whether parents should receive criminal penalties for helping their son or daughter secure assisted suicide. In another video, Cutler posted a long discussion with her grandmother in which they discussed the euthanasia.
“What are your thoughts as you like move closer to the date?” she asked.
“It’s like the light at the end of the tunnel,” her grandmother replied.
“What are some of the precursors?” Cutler wanted to know. “Like the questions they asked to make sure you’re doing it for the right reason.”
“Your diagnosis is if it’s fatal, how many more months you have; they give you time to consider. They keep stressing the fact that you can always change your mind,” her grandmother explained.
“What is the actual day like?” Cutler queried.
“Like they said, an appointment,” her grandmother said. “Initial injection putting you to sleep. And the big pain is a prick in the hand to provide for the little valves, and then once you’re in a deep sleep, there are two other injections. At that point you don&#8217;t know, so it’s painless.”
When Cutler asked whether her grandmother would prefer to die at home, her grandmother said she preferred the hospital, adding, “I came in quietly; I’d like to go out quietly.”
Cutler asked if she was nervous or excited; her grandmother said she was “looking forward to just putting it in, to being dependent, no control.”
“As the day approaches, is it something you’re thinking about every day?” Cutler asked.
“No,” her grandmother answered.  “Just it’s gonna happen when it happens. When I’ll be ready I’ll know. I’ve always made my own decisions for myself. In living I trust; I will in death. I do believe my husband is there saying it’s about time. And I’ll say, ‘Hi, Arn. I’m here.’ That’s it.”

The <a href="http://dailywire.com/topic/europe" target="_blank" rel="noopener">European</a> nation will soon permit doctors to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/euthanasia" target="_blank" rel="noopener">euthanize</a> children deemed to have conditions which will lead to “hopeless and unbearable suffering,” according to an <a href="https://www-rijksoverheid-nl.translate.goog/actueel/nieuws/2023/04/14/kabinet-werkt-aan-regeling-levensbeeindiging-voor-kinderen-tot-12-jaar-die-ondraaglijk-en-uitzichtloos-lijden?_x_tr_sl=auto&amp;_x_tr_tl=en&amp;_x_tr_hl=en&amp;_x_tr_pto=wapp" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announcement</a> from the Dutch government released earlier this month. Officials claimed that the new policy only concerns “a small group of terminally ill children” whose “palliative care options are not sufficient to relieve their suffering and who are expected to die in the foreseeable future.”
“This is a very complex subject that deals with very harrowing situations. Situations you wouldn&#8217;t wish on anyone,” Dutch Health Minister Ernst Kuipers said in the announcement. “I am pleased that, after intensive consultation with all parties involved, we have come to a solution with which we can help these terminally ill children, their parents and also their practitioners.”
The new policy also seeks to loosen requirements for physicians who attempt to euthanize children since they already “feel reluctance to perform late termination of pregnancy or termination of life in newborns.”
The government formerly required doctors to demonstrate before a committee that the administration of assisted suicide occurred with “due care,” after which the committee sent the assessment to the Public Prosecution Service, where officials would decide whether to initiate a criminal investigation. Officials will now consolidate the committee process and forward the case to the Public Prosecution Service without medical files, meaning that the agency must base any criminal investigation “exclusively on the judgment of the assessment committee.”
Physicians must therefore &#8220;come to the conviction that termination of life is the only reasonable alternative to remove the child&#8217;s hopeless and unbearable suffering&#8221; based upon &#8220;prevailing medical opinion.&#8221;
The announcement from the Dutch government did not specify what role parents of the children play in determining whether euthanasia will be administered. Current law <a href="https://www.government.nl/topics/euthanasia/euthanasia-assisted-suicide-and-non-resuscitation-on-request" target="_blank" rel="noopener">allows</a> children to request euthanasia from the age of twelve, even as parental consent is mandatory until the age of sixteen.

Much ado has been made about episode three of “The Last Of Us,” which took a quick detour from zombie violence to tell an overly long, extra sentimental gay love story. 
Mainstream media celebrated the romance, <a href="https://www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-movie-recaps/the-last-of-us-season-1-episode-3-recap-hbo-nick-offerman-murray-bartlett-gay-love-1234667212/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">calling it</a> “a wonderfully powerful, achingly human story.” Conservative critics, meanwhile, rolled their eyes and insisted it was just another attempt to mainstream the LGBT agenda into every facet of pop culture.
While many opinions circulated about the merit of the sexual relationship between Bill (Nick Offerman) and Frank (Murray Bartlett), almost no viewers zeroed in on another vital component of the episode “Long, Long Time”: the glorification of suicide.
This concept is nothing new for Hollywood. The 2016 film “Me Before You,” which was based on a Jojo Moyes book by the same name, made the case for assisted suicide as well. That story features a caregiver named Louisa (Emilia Clarke) falling in love with a quadriplegic man named Will (Sam Claflin) and attempting to show him life is worth living. In the end, he heads to Switzerland to die anyway.
Moyes faced backlash in that instance and fought back, saying, “it was a kind of extraordinary situation but also one that it was very difficult to judge, because unless you put yourself in somebody’s shoes, I think you shouldn’t judge their action.” She also insisted that there was ambiguity over which decision was “correct,” citing her own experience with family requiring round-the-clock medical care as a partial catalyst for writing the story.
“The fact is, in the film as in the book, nobody else agrees with what [Will] decides to do. This is not by any means sending out a message,” the author said during a 2016 <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Joah6vLcl34" target="_blank" rel="noopener">interview</a>. “It&#8217;s just about one character – it’s nothing more than that.”
One more popular, suicide-glorifying television show was Netflix’s controversial teen drama, “13 Reasons Why.” That series at least had mixed reviews, with media outlets weighing in on whether it was safe and healthy to market a teen revenge fantasy featuring a graphic suicide portrayal as entertainment. 
One <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2020/01/18/health/13-reasons-why-study-suicides-trnd/index.html#:~:text=At%20the%20time%2C%20researchers%20found,trends%2C%20according%20to%20the%20study." target="_blank" rel="noopener">report</a> found that suicides among children aged 10 to 17-years-old saw a 28.9% increase in April 2017 following the show&#8217;s release, though the experts are divided on whether the show was a major contributing factor.
But when it came to Bill and Frank drinking poisoned wine on purpose in “The Last of Us,” everyone seemed to agree it was sweet and poignant, not tragic.
The basic gist of the story was that hardcore prepper Bill lived alone in his heavily-armed, super-fortified home amid the end of the world as we know it following a deadly zombie apocalypse. Bill was surviving, unhappily, until Frank stumbled into one of his traps and then talked his way into the carefully guarded fortress. The pair went on to enjoy a romantic relationship spanning two decades. 
One of the most quoted lines of the episode was Bill saying, “I was never afraid before you showed up,” indicating how falling in love with Frank gave him a new lease on life. But in the more current scenes, it’s obvious that Frank is suffering from a degenerative disease and wants to kill himself so he’s not a burden on Bill anymore. Bill reluctantly agrees to help by poisoning a glass of wine. In the last hours of their lives, Bill reveals that he’s poisoned his wine as well so he’ll never have to live without Frank.
Upon learning Bill poisoned the entire bottle of wine, Frank says, “I do not support this. But from an objective point of view, it’s incredibly romantic.”
This Romeo and Juliet ending is painted as a moral good and understandable, given the circumstances. But the very fact that these two were able to live happy, fulfilled lives in the wake of a literal apocalypse, carving out an objectively happy life together in that impossible situation, is enough to negate all the pro-suicide overtones of this episode. Maybe it’s “romantic” to think Bill couldn’t live without Frank. But before Frank came along, he couldn’t imagine life getting better than sitting around, drinking beer, and watching zombies get zapped on CCTV. Suffering is a part of the human experience and sometimes we don’t find out the purpose for years to come, or even in this lifetime.
It would be easier for everyone in the series to give up trying. The world is full of danger, death, destruction, sorrow, and unimaginable loss. And yet everyone on “The Last of Us” seems determined to survive anyway.
The new hit HBO Max series is based on a video game and it’s worth noting that Bill and Frank’s story in the game is wildly different than it is in the TV series. Frank does commit suicide in the game, but it’s because he “hated [Bill’s] guts” and “wanted a better life,” per the suicide note. Meanwhile, Bill goes on living and supplies the main characters Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) with a car to drive west.
At this point, our culture is becoming numb to the concept of assisted suicide in the face of adversity. One only needs to gaze north to Canada and its MAID (medical assistance in dying) program to see where this all leads. Those who are elderly, sick, poor, or even heartbroken in the wake of loss may be encouraged to seek death as a means of escape.
This concept of embracing suicide as a noble choice is creeping in quietly through channels like mainstream books, movies, and television. Just don’t be surprised when being pro-assisted suicide becomes just as pervasive and deadly as the cordyceps fungus on the show.
