<p>People are too addicted to the legal drama surrounding former President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/donald-trump" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Donald Trump</a>, a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/texas" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Texas</a> GOP congressman suggested on Sunday.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s like watching a novella, a Spanish soap opera,&#8221; Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-TX), who represents a district along the U.S.-Mexico border, <a href="https://www.cnn.com/videos/politics/2023/04/09/sotu-gonzales-spanish-soap-opera-trump-charges.cnn" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said on CNN</a>. &#8220;You can&#8217;t look away. I get it. I want to know what Trump had for breakfast just as much as the next person.&#8221;</p>
<p>Indeed, Trump has again become the subject of constant news coverage and social media buzz as he runs a new presidential campaign and faces legal jeopardy on multiple fronts. In recent weeks, Trump became the first former president to face criminal charges, and on Tuesday, he <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-indicted-on-34-felony-counts-of-conspiracy-falsifying-business-records-pleads-not-guilty" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pleaded not guilty</a> to 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in New York.</p>
<p>Gonzales stressed that Trump is innocent until proven guilty and called for more civility in politics.</p>
<p>&#8220;What you&#8217;re seeing is so many people, because of their political affiliation, are demonizing one another,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We have to get back — we got to get away from that. We got to get back to allowing things to take hold.&#8221;</p>
<p>Gonzales said the Trump controversies overshadow &#8220;real problems,&#8221; such as the border crisis. The congressman pointed to a recent story about <a href="https://nypost.com/2023/03/28/accused-migrant-smuggler-filmed-himself-before-killing-innocents-video/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">an accused migrant smuggler</a> driving more than 100 miles per hour when he hit a car, killing a woman and her granddaughter.</p>
<p>&#8220;This is what my district is feeling,&#8221; he stressed.</p>
<p>Gonzales made the comments during an exchange with CNN &#8220;State of the Union&#8221; anchor Dana Bash, who pressed the congressman to respond to Trump <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/3936557-trumps-call-to-defund-doj-fbi-puts-senate-house-gop-at-odds/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">calling for Congress</a> to defund the Department of Justice (DOJ) and FBI &#8220;until they come to their senses.&#8221;</p>

<p>Trump faces a federal inquiry led by special counsel Jack Smith, who is looking into the former president&#8217;s handling of classified documents and the events of January 6, 2021.</p>
<p>During the CNN interview, Gonzales did not respond directly to Trump&#8217;s comments about defunding the DOJ and FBI but did voice support for law enforcement in general.</p>
<p>&#8220;I want to see law enforcement empowered,&#8221; Gonzales said. &#8220;I want to see law enforcement have greater training, have greater equipment, and a closer bond with their communities.&#8221;</p>
