A top lawyer tied to a now-defunct transgender program for kids is hosting a high-dollar fundraiser on Saturday for Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico, according to social media posts. 
The campaign event in Houston will be hosted by Afsheen Davis, senior vice president and general counsel for Texas Children’s Hospital. It comes just days after Texas Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton <a href="https://x.com/KenPaxtonTX/status/2085120779398877586">announced</a> a final settlement with the hospital requiring it to establish what his office has described as the nation&#8217;s first-ever &#8220;detransition&#8221; clinic. 
&#8220;As an organization, we respect our team members’ rights to their own opinions and beliefs on political matters, and at the same time those pursuits are personal and do not represent the company or its position,&#8221; a hospital spokesperson told The Daily Wire. &#8220;It’s both common practice and an individual right for employees to host fundraising events in their personal capacity.&#8221;
The fundraiser, which was <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/DbbZsOrG1kM/?img_index=2">advertised</a> at a Texas Trial Lawyers Association event, will also be hosted by Josh Davis, Afsheen Davis&#8217; husband. Josh Davis is a <a href="https://www.ttla.com/?pg=Leadership" target="_blank" rel="noopener">member</a> of the Texas Trial Lawyers Association executive committee and runs a personal-injury law firm. 
The Daily Wire reached out to Talarico’s campaign and Davis for more details on the fundraiser. 
Talarico and Paxton are locked in a fierce general election race for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Republican Sen. John Cornyn, with multiple polls showing a close contest.

The settlement requires Texas Children&#8217;s to pay $10 million — roughly $8.6 million of it to the state — to resolve claims that the hospital billed Texas Medicaid for illegal transgender procedures on kids, including by using false diagnosis codes. The hospital must also establish a “detransition” clinic by the end of October 2026. Texas Children&#8217;s has denied violating the law.
Davis and the hospital are also defendants in a separate lawsuit involving the hospital&#8217;s former gender-transition program.
Dr. Eithan Haim, who worked at Texas Children&#8217;s,<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/exclusive-elon-musk-funds-suit-against-texas-childrens-for-malicious-prosecution-of-eithan-haim"> sued</a> Davis and other hospital officials, accusing the hospital of lying about ending its transgender medical program and claiming it was still performing attempted transition procedures on children as young as 11.
During the Biden administration, federal prosecutors accused Haim of improperly accessing patients&#8217; records. Haim said Davis was among those at the hospital who helped the Biden administration bring a case against him. Those charges were dropped shortly after Trump took office. 
In a lawsuit filed in January, Haim alleged that Davis and other hospital officials sought to have him &#8220;criminally charged and provided federal authorities the entire basis for the government’s investigation and subsequent indictment of Dr. Haim.”
Talarico&#8217;s past promotion of transgender ideology has been a focus of Republican attacks during the Senate race. While Talarico recently said he does not support transgender surgeries on kids, he <a href="https://journals.house.texas.gov/HJRNL/88R/PDF/88RDAY63FINAL.PDF">voted against</a> a 2023 law that protected minors from transgender surgeries and cross-sex hormone procedures.

A Dallas Independent School District (ISD) police officer was critically wounded Thursday after authorities say a man he had just rescued from a dangerous situation on a Dallas-area freeway shot him.
The shooting happened around 11 a.m. local time in the parking lot of a Walmart and Sam&#8217;s Club in Northwest Dallas. 
<a href="https://www.fox4news.com/news/off-duty-dallas-isd-officer-shot">According</a> to Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux, Dallas ISD Officer Justin Jones had been flagged down by a person experiencing an apparent mental health crisis on the LBJ Freeway. Jones helped remove the individual from the highway and drove him to the nearby shopping center parking lot.
&#8220;After he got to this parking lot, he was trying to talk to the person who is now a suspect,&#8221; Comeaux said. &#8220;He was getting out of the car and then we had a shooting that occurred. The officer was shot.&#8221;
Authorities said Jones suffered a gunshot wound to the lower torso or upper leg. Dallas ISD Police Chief Albert Martinez said Jones was rushed to Parkland Memorial Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery.
Martinez said Jones, 39, has served with the Dallas ISD Police Department for 16 years and is assigned to W.T. White High School. 
&#8220;He was helping somebody in crisis, as we expect the officers to serve in the community,&#8221; Martinez said. &#8220;We&#8217;re grateful to all the help that we have received. He&#8217;s in our prayers. We thank Parkland, the amazing surgeons there at the trauma center that do what they do.&#8221;
Martinez also praised another Dallas ISD officer who responded to the scene and applied a tourniquet before paramedics arrived, helping stabilize Jones. Officials said Jones is expected to survive.
A suspect was taken into custody at the scene, though authorities have not yet released the person&#8217;s identity or announced any charges. Police have also not disclosed what led the suspect to open fire after Jones transported him from the freeway.
Investigators cordoned off the shopping center parking lot as officers searched the surrounding area. Images showed numerous police vehicles, crime scene tape surrounding Jones&#8217; patrol vehicle, and evidence markers near the suspect&#8217;s vehicle.
The investigation remains ongoing.

Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) on Tuesday poured more cold water on Democratic primary rival James Talarico&#8217;s campaign, raising fresh doubts about whether he can win November&#8217;s closely watched Senate race.
In an interview with <a href="http://nbcnews.com/politics/trump-administration/live-blog/trump-michigan-el-sayed-2026-election-congress-iran-live-updates-rcna590889/rcrd118342?canonicalCard=true">NBC News</a>, Crockett said she isn&#8217;t buying the flurry of polls showing Talarico within striking distance of — or even leading — Texas Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton in the closely watched U.S. Senate race that could flip the balance of power in Washington.
With a few months until Election Day, the traditionally safe red seat looks increasingly competitive. Three public polls released in the last week show Talarico narrowly leading Paxton, raising concerns that a bruising Republican primary may have left the GOP nominee vulnerable in November, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/senate-race-in-solid-red-state-remains-too-close-for-gop-comfort?author=Drew+Berkemeyer&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=5&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=Senate+Race+In+Solid+Red+State+Remains+Too+Close+For+GOP+Comfort">The Daily Wire reported.</a>
A <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/fox-news-poll-gop-divisions-shape-texas-senate-race">Fox News poll</a> released last week found Talarico leading Paxton 51% to 48% among registered voters. A <a href="https://texaspublicopinionresearch.substack.com/p/new-poll-james-talaricos-lead-over">Texas Public Opinion Research</a> (TPOR) survey of likely voters found Talarico ahead 45% to 40%, while the latest survey from the <a href="https://static1.squarespace.com/static/67aa7aa3e284b002cd6a420e/t/6a713767d4ed824b91ea090d/1785804647961/Texas+Statewide+August2026.pdf">Barbara Jordan Public Policy Research and Survey Center</a> showed Talarico leading 47% to 45%.
Even as Republicans sound the alarm, Crockett says she isn&#8217;t sold on the Talarico hype.
“I don&#8217;t know,” she said when asked whether she thinks Talarico can turn Texas blue. “I watch money.”
“When I look at the money, if Republicans start spending money in Texas, then I&#8217;ll be convinced. But right now, national Republicans decided they wanted to dump money into North Carolina, as well as Georgia. That&#8217;s where they&#8217;re fighting, and national Democrats have not decided to dump money into Texas either&#8230; I look at: where does the NRSC stand? Where does DSCC stand? Right now, neither one are investing, which tells me that their internals are saying the same thing,” she told NBC reporter Sahil Kapur. 
Since her bruising primary loss, which she has labeled a &#8220;<a href="https://www.wfmd.com/2026/07/09/jasmine-crockett-blasts-her-texas-democratic-primary-loss-as-racist-race/">racist race</a>,&#8221; the Dallas-area congresswoman has repeatedly declined calls from fellow Democrats to campaign for Talarico.
“I won&#8217;t get on the ground to really start to feel it until maybe end of September, October, as I start to dig into which races I&#8217;m going to help out in, the races that I really feel like we can win,” she told NBC. 
Crockett’s skepticism of Talarico comes as the Senate hopeful, who has sparked backlash for his <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/this-book-is-gay-read-the-sexually-explicit-volumes-james-talaricos-church-gives-kids">fringe views on Christianity</a>, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/watch-james-talarico-says-he-loves-trans-children-in-unearthed-clip">affection for transgender children</a>, and <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/the-audio-thats-blowing-a-hole-in-talaricos-christian-persona">disdain for the American flag</a>, struggles to energize black voters. 
Some black activists have <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/black-activists-threaten-to-nuke-james-talaricos-senate-run">threatened to tank</a> his campaign over what they describe as his failure to engage black voters and organizations following the perceived snubbing of Crockett. At least one elected black Texas Democrat has already predicted Talarico will lose. 
“Do I think that Talarico’s refusal thus far to engage black electeds and the black infrastructure has put him at a disadvantage? Absolutely, because there’s not a lot of time to try to rally us,” Texas State Rep. Jolanda Jones, a Democrat, <a href="https://x.com/BreitbartNews/status/2074908934507233660?s=20">warned in a recent interview.</a> 
“Talarico needs to pay for us to get our voters out. Only then does Talarico have a chance to win,” Jones said. “If he continues to do what he has been doing, I believe Talarico is going to lose.”

Patrick Zuberbueler&#8217;s ranch has been in his family for generations.
The land, which sits along the Rio Grande in Val Verde County, is hunting ground and home to their Rambouillet sheep, Angora goats, and cattle. It could also soon become home for new vehicle barriers the Trump administration is hoping to install to prevent border crossings.
There&#8217;s just one major problem: the vehicle barriers would be located along cliffs that drop 275 feet to the river, where it would be near-impossible for anyone to drive across. And the vehicle barriers, which consist of four-foot tall metal posts with a cross beam, don&#8217;t prevent crossings on foot.
&#8220;They keep talking about a vehicle barrier. It&#8217;s impossible for a vehicle to drive across, come into the United States, especially in the western part of the ranch. It&#8217;s deep bluffs. You would have to drive off the bluff and then it would be catastrophic,&#8221; Zuberbueler told The Daily Wire.
&#8220;The plan they have in place makes absolutely no sense,&#8221; Zuberbueler said.
Zuberbueler, citing President Donald Trump&#8217;s success in shutting down the border, says he doesn&#8217;t believe border barriers are necessary. His family has also suffered enough at the hands of overreaching government, he said.
<div>&#8220;The crossings were off the charts when President Trump came into office, they dropped by like 90%,&#8221; he said. &#8220;So they&#8217;ve answered their own question that they don&#8217;t need a wall.&#8221;</div>

<div>&#8220;And for us personally in my family, we have a unique situation in that through the course of time, we&#8217;ve lost land with the lake filling up. The federal government paid my dad for the land that was going to be inundated with water. And that was in the 60s. And then in the 70s, the state came along and took a portion of the ranch &#8230; and then in the 80s &#8230; they took more,&#8221; he said.</div>
Val Verde County Sheriff Joe Frank Martinez said the planned vehicle barrier would be a waste of taxpayer dollars.
&#8220;There&#8217;s no vehicles coming across that country because they can&#8217;t. There&#8217;s no roads on the Mexican side that&#8217;s going to allow them to put their vehicle across the border through the river because 98% of those, they&#8217;re canyons. It&#8217;s a taxpayer&#8217;s expense that taxpayers don&#8217;t need to burden.&#8221;
Zuberbueler said he&#8217;s become so desperate he emailed the White House, inviting the president to visit his property.
&#8220;I&#8217;ve got to try,&#8221; he said, adding, &#8220;We don&#8217;t have a choice.&#8221;
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced in June its plans to construct a four- to six-foot-tall steel “vehicle barrier” through a $2.6 billion <a href="https://app.govly.com/public/signals/138185?utm_source=chatgpt.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">contract</a>, which also included the paving of new patrol roads between Sanderson and Lake Amistad.
A CBP spokesperson told The Daily Wire that it&#8217;s all part of &#8220;a border security strategy that leverages advanced technology and the natural terrain barriers.&#8221;
&#8220;Cameras, sensors, roads, and limited low-profile post-on-rail barriers will be deployed in strategic locations to restrict unlawful vehicle access while utilizing existing natural barriers. Additionally, CBP will use and improve existing public and park roads where it is possible to provide agents with continued access along the border,&#8221; the spokesperson said.
Nearly 100 miles west of Val Verde County in the Big Bend region of West Texas, Terrell County Sheriff Thaddeus Cleveland is preparing for the federal government&#8217;s construction of similar vehicle border barriers where the cliffs drop &#8220;anywhere from 500 feet to a 1,000 feet.&#8221;
&#8220;I can tell you, all of Terrell County, you cannot drive a vehicle across the border there. Significant cliffs, same thing with that 37 miles of Brewster County and a lot of that country, really all of that country going into Val Verde, it&#8217;s just impossible because of the cliffs that are on either side of the river,&#8221; Cleveland said.
The agency earlier walked back plans to build a 30-foot-tall border wall in the Big Bend region after landowners and sheriffs, including Cleveland, expressed disapproval of the project. Cleveland says the rugged mountains serve as &#8220;big natural barriers&#8221; that keep crossings low and that more cameras and drones in the sky would serve them better.
Cleveland, who served over two decades as a Border Patrol agent, similarly has taken issue with the plan, saying vehicle barriers wouldn&#8217;t make a difference. He said they instead need what has been tagged as the &#8220;virtual wall&#8221; by putting drones in the skies.
The sheriff also emphasized the need for new roads along the border, which is part of the Trump administration&#8217;s construction plans, so authorities can have better access to the frontlines.
&#8220;I believe in barriers where barriers are necessary, and this isn&#8217;t an area where barriers are necessary because we have that time and distance and technology to fill those gaps,&#8221; he said.

Texas has long been one of the Republican Party&#8217;s strongest states, particularly in the Trump era. But with just three months until Election Day, the GOP is confronting an uncomfortable reality: one of its safest Senate seats is suddenly looking competitive.
Three public polls released in the last week show Democratic state Rep. James Talarico narrowly leading Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton, raising concerns that a bruising Republican primary and lingering questions about Paxton’s personal controversies may have left the GOP nominee vulnerable in November.
A <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/fox-news-poll-gop-divisions-shape-texas-senate-race">Fox News poll</a> released last week found Talarico leading Paxton 51% to 48% among registered voters. A <a href="https://texaspublicopinionresearch.substack.com/p/new-poll-james-talaricos-lead-over">Texas Public Opinion Research</a> (TPOR) survey of likely voters found Talarico ahead 45% to 40%, while the latest survey from the <a href="https://static1.squarespace.com/static/67aa7aa3e284b002cd6a420e/t/6a713767d4ed824b91ea090d/1785804647961/Texas+Statewide+August2026.pdf">Barbara Jordan Public Policy Research and Survey Center</a> showed Talarico leading 47% to 45%.
While all three results fall within or near the polls’ margins of error, the consistency of the findings has forced Republicans to confront a difficult reality: Paxton is not beginning the general election with the overwhelming advantage traditionally enjoyed by Republican nominees in Texas.
President Donald Trump carried Texas by nearly 14 percentage points in 2024, but Paxton has struggled to replicate the strength of the broader Republican coalition, particularly among independents and some factions of the GOP electorate. The central challenge for Paxton is not simply convincing undecided voters to choose him, it is repairing the fractures created during a bitter Republican primary against longtime Sen. John Cornyn.
Paxton defeated Cornyn after receiving Trump’s endorsement, but the contest exposed a deep divide inside the Texas Republican Party. Cornyn, a longtime Senate leader with strong support among establishment Republicans and major donors, was defeated despite millions of dollars in outside spending aimed at stopping Paxton.
That division has carried into the general election. Several prominent Republican donors who supported Cornyn have been slow to fully embrace Paxton’s campaign, creating concerns among Republicans that their nominee may lack the financial resources necessary to define Talarico before Democrats can define him first. Talarico, meanwhile, has built a <a href="https://abcnews.com/Politics/democrats-dominate-fundraising-key-senate-races-republicans-ample/story?id=134829415">significant fundraising operation</a>, raising tens of millions of dollars as he attempts to become the first Democrat in more than three decades to win statewide office in Texas.
The polling suggests that Paxton’s personal image remains one of his biggest liabilities. The Fox News survey found 59% of Texas voters are concerned Paxton lacks the character necessary to serve in the Senate, compared with 47% who believe Talarico is too extreme. Even among Republicans, 36% expressed concerns about Paxton’s character. The TPOR poll found Paxton with the worst favorability rating of any major figure tested, with 33% viewing him favorably and 46% unfavorably. Talarico, meanwhile, held a net positive rating, with 43% favorable and 31% unfavorable.
The Barbara Jordan survey showed a similar dynamic, with 39% of likely voters viewing Paxton favorably compared with 57% who viewed him negatively. Talarico was more evenly rated, with 46% favorable and 47% unfavorable.
Still, Paxton’s supporters argue his personal numbers are less important than the ideological contrast between the two candidates. The Fox News poll found roughly eight in 10 supporters of both candidates said their vote was primarily about where the candidates stand on issues rather than their personal qualities.
Republicans have already begun attacking Talarico over his past statements and positions on issues including transgender policy, immigration, religion, and healthcare. 
The challenge, however, is that Talarico enters the general election with some advantages of his own. The TPOR poll found voters trusted Talarico more than Paxton on the issue dominating many voters’ concerns: affordability. 44% of respondents said the cost of living was among their top priorities heading into 2026, and voters trusted Talarico over Paxton by nine points when asked who they trusted more to lower costs and improve Texans’ financial situations.
The Democratic candidate has also performed strongly among independents. The TPOR survey found Talarico leading Paxton among independent voters 43% to 23%, while the Barbara Jordan poll showed Talarico ahead among independents 63% to 23%. The Fox News poll also found signs of an enthusiasm advantage for Democrats, with Democratic voters more likely than Republicans to describe themselves as highly motivated and highly interested in the midterms.
The demographic breakdowns have similarly raised concerns for Republicans. Texas Republicans have historically relied on overwhelming margins among rural white voters to offset Democratic strength in urban areas and minority communities. But the latest surveys suggest Paxton’s advantage among white voters is significantly smaller than recent Republican nominees.
The Barbara Jordan poll found Paxton leading among white voters by 14 points, 53% to 39%. That compares with Trump’s 33-point advantage among white voters in Texas in the 2024 election. 
The same survey found Talarico leading among Hispanic voters by 19 points, 57% to 38%, while Fox News found Talarico ahead among Hispanic voters by 18 points. The shift among Hispanic voters is particularly significant because Texas Republicans had hopes that gains could be made with the demographic after Trump won Hispanic voters in Texas narrowly in 2024.
Despite the warning signs, Republicans remain confident the race can be stabilized. Republicans have controlled every statewide office for more than three decades, and the Fox News poll found the Republican Party holding a higher favorability rating than the Democratic Party statewide.
For Republicans, the path forward is clear but difficult: unite the party, rebuild donor support, and convince voters that Talarico represents a Democratic agenda they do not want in Washington.
For Democrats, the challenge is equally clear: overcome decades of Republican dominance and prove that Texas has become competitive enough for a statewide breakthrough.
Texas is still a Republican state. But for the first time in years, Republicans are entering a Senate race there facing a question that once seemed impossible: whether their hold on the Lone Star State is beginning to weaken.

Former Rep. Kay Granger (R-TX), the first Republican woman elected to Congress from Texas and the first Republican woman to chair the House Appropriations Committee, has died at the age of 83.
Granger represented Texas&#8217; 12th Congressional District for nearly three decades after first serving as mayor of Fort Worth, where she became the city&#8217;s first female mayor. During her 28 years in Congress, she rose to chair the powerful House Appropriations Committee, overseeing federal spending and becoming one of the most influential Republicans on Capitol Hill.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) paid tribute to Granger on Sunday evening, calling her a &#8220;dear friend&#8221; and praising her lifetime of public service.
&#8220;Kay Granger devoted her life to serving her Fort Worth, Texas community — as a teacher and businesswoman, on the Fort Worth Zoning Commission and City Council, as Mayor, and in Congress for nearly three decades, where she also served as Chairwoman of the House Appropriations Committee,&#8221; Johnson <a href="https://x.com/SpeakerJohnson/status/2084081192999981058">wrote</a>.
&#8220;Throughout her career, she broke barriers for women in public service. &#8220;Kelly and I send our prayers to her family, loved ones, and the Fort Worth community as we remember her extraordinary life of service and lasting legacy,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;She was a dear friend who will be greatly missed.&#8221;
Born in Greenville, Texas, in 1943, Granger began her career as a teacher before entering public service after successfully organizing opposition to a proposed waste processing facility near her home. She went on to serve on the Fort Worth Zoning Commission, the Fort Worth City Council, and as mayor before winning election to Congress in 1996.
During her tenure in Washington, Granger became a leading voice on defense spending, veterans&#8217; issues, and federal appropriations. She chaired the House Appropriations Committee beginning in 2023 before stepping aside the following year while remaining chairwoman emeritus through the end of her final term. Granger announced in 2023 that she would not seek reelection. Her final months in office were marked by declining health and extended absences from Washington. Her family later confirmed she had experienced dementia before leaving office in January 2025.
Her death marks the passing of one of the most consequential Republican women in Texas political history, whose career included a series of historic firsts at both the state and national levels.

<a href="https://x.com/LauraEWeiss16/status/2082470661281177633?s=20">Punchbowl reported</a> Wednesday that the DOJ sent Cornyn a written proposal in an effort to satisfy his demands. It did not work. 
“They know what they need to do, but they simply refuse to do it,” Cornyn <a href="https://x.com/LauraEWeiss16/status/2082475546596757684?s=20">told</a> Punchbowl, announcing he called off his scheduled meeting with Blanche.
Ahead of that now-canceled meeting, Cornyn took to social media Tuesday to draw his line in the sand: “Fake news alert: there is no &#8216;deal&#8217; on Blanche nom. They know what they have to do,” Cornyn <a href="https://x.com/JohnCornyn/status/2082141659786051682?s=20">posted</a>.
Cornyn is working with Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC), who also serves on the Judiciary Committee, to secure additional commitments that the Justice Department will amend its settlement with President Trump to explicitly rule out a $1.8 billion &#8220;anti-weaponization&#8221; fund.
The controversy started in May, when Trump agreed to <a href="https://www.justice.gov/opa/media/1441086/dl?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=govdelivery">dismiss</a> his $10 billion lawsuit against the IRS in exchange for a formal apology and the creation of a new $1.776 billion Anti-Weaponization Fund, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-establishes-1-776b-fund-to-combat-deep-state-weaponization">The Daily Wire</a> reported. The program would&#8217;ve compensated people who say federal authorities unfairly targeted them under the Biden administration. A separate provision of the agreement also barred the IRS from pursuing certain tax claims against Trump, his family, and their businesses. 
Only a few weeks later, the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/how-the-gop-revolted-against-trumps-anti-weaponization-fund">Anti-Weaponization Fund was dead</a>. Clinton-appointed Judge Leonie Brinkema issued a temporary restraining order May 29, blocking the Justice Department from taking further action on the fund. Justice Department officials complied, and after tense meetings with Senate Republicans, acting Attorney General Blanche testified: “We are not moving forward with the fund, period.” 
President Trump blasted Republicans who opposed the agreement. 
“Well, Congress didn’t want it,” President Trump told The Daily Caller’s Reagan Reese from the Oval Office. “You have to talk to Congress. The Republican senators, some of them, got very weak knees. They didn’t have the stomach for the fight.”
The DOJ&#8217;s pledge to scrap the fund hasn&#8217;t satisfied Cornyn, who was supposed to meet with Blanche before Thursday&#8217;s committee vote. With all Democrats opposed, a single Republican vote against Blanche would effectively kill his nomination. 
“We need it in writing. We don’t need well-wishes or, you know, impressions,” he said, according to <a href="https://www.politico.com/live-updates/2026/07/28/congress/todd-blanche-judiciary-committee-delay-01013621?nname=playbook&amp;nid=0000014f-1646-d88f-a1cf-5f46b7bd0000&amp;nrid=5c65d8fa-b7c7-44e5-98d0-43e6086e71cd">Politico</a>. “We need concrete confirmation.”
Tillis has suggested to Politico that he is “pretty much following Cornyn’s cue.&#8221; 
Cornyn’s threat comes one week after he <a href="https://www.cornyn.senate.gov/news/cornyn-secures-commitment-from-trump-admin-to-release-pepfar-funds/">successfully threatened</a> to block two of President Donald Trump’s ambassadorial nominees unless the administration released more than $1 billion in foreign aid funding for Africa.

The Trump-Cornyn clashes come just weeks after Cornyn suffered a decisive defeat in the GOP primary to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, despite spending months courting Trump&#8217;s endorsement.
“The only way it seems like you can get the administration’s attention on some of these funding issues is by using the leverage to withhold votes on nominees,” Cornyn told <a href="https://www.semafor.com/article/07/21/2026/cornyn-threatens-to-sink-trump-nominees-over-pepfar">Semafor</a>. “We are going to use the committee vote tomorrow as a way to … get the money distributed the way Congress appropriated it.”

Former Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary says the newly released diaries of Dr. Anthony Fauci echo doubts he formed about Fauci&#8217;s motives years before the COVID-19 pandemic.
Makary said in a resurfaced 2024 interview he &#8220;first became suspicious of Dr. Fauci and his motives&#8221; during the 2014 Ebola outbreak, when Fauci insisted on transferring a recovering nurse from Dallas to the National Institutes of Health, arguing the move was motivated by publicity rather than medical necessity. Makary said the transfer needlessly exposed others.
According to Makary, the patient was already receiving appropriate care under standard respiratory precautions, leaving no medical reason for the transfer, which he attributed to a publicity opportunity.
&#8220;There&#8217;s a room for respiratory precautions at every major medical center,&#8221; he explained. &#8220;It&#8217;s not like the respiratory precaution room at the NIH hospital is better than the respiratory precautions room at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.&#8221;
&#8220;And there&#8217;s nothing really to do, just supportive care,&#8221; Makary said. &#8220;They&#8217;re just watching her, so they&#8217;re doing basically nothing. They&#8217;re just letting her recover. And Fauci insists that they fly her up to the Clinical Center in Washington, D.C., from Dallas.&#8221;
As seen in the resurfaced clip from 2014, Fauci proudly announced the move of the Ebola patient during a congressional hearing in Washington, D.C., adding, &#8220;I&#8217;m sure you&#8217;ll hear about it soon in the press.&#8221;
&#8220;She will be coming to the National Institutes of Health, where we&#8217;ll be supplying her with state-of-the-art care in our high-level containment facilities, exposing countless people in the transport to Ebola,&#8221; Makary said, mocking Fauci&#8217;s actions. &#8220;Then Fauci puts on an astronaut suit along with a photographer and goes into this room where she&#8217;s recovering and they get a photo-op.&#8221;

Makary said that one of the photos went viral and the NIH subsequently held a press conference with Dr. Fauci. Makary said Fauci boasted about how all this care would be totally free of charge and that they never bill patients. Makary said one reporter memorably noted that the NIH is funded by taxpayers.
&#8220;One person, a reporter in the audience, astutely says, &#8216;Wait a minute, when you say it&#8217;s free, isn&#8217;t it funded by billions of taxpayer dollars?'&#8221; Makary recalled. &#8220;And you know, that kind of threw a monkey wrench into their argument.&#8221;
&#8220;All I can say is there is no clinical indication, there is no medical justification for transport here,&#8221; Makary added.

On the campaign trail, Democrat candidate James Talarico often describes his faith as “biblical Christianity.&#8221; But the Senate hopeful once credited Islamic mystics with shaping his faith just as much as Christian writers, audio unearthed by The Daily Wire reveals.
In a recent <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2026/06/01/us/politics/james-talarico-christian.html">interview</a> with The New York Times, Talarico asserted that his faith was rooted in “biblical Christianity.” During an appearance on The State of Belief podcast in April 2024 alongside Muslim state Rep. Salman Bhojani, Talarico praised Islam for shaping his religious beliefs. Those comments could come into play as debate heats up in Texas about Islam&#8217;s growing presence in the state. 
“I know personally that I&#8217;ve learned as much about my faith from Salman&#8217;s tradition, from the Islamic mystics, from poets like Rumi, as much as I have from Christian authors and Christian writers,” he said. “This kind of interfaith dialogue, it doesn&#8217;t water down your tradition, in fact it strengthens it, it brings out new flavors and new colors.”

Talarico later quoted the 13th-century Islamic mystic as saying “in every religion there is love, yet love has no religion.”
Talarico, looking to become the first Democrat to win statewide election in Texas in decades, has faced much scrutiny over his leftist version of Christianity and the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/at-james-talaricos-church-its-offensive-to-respect-gods-pronouns-but-abortions-ok">uber-woke</a> church he attends in Austin. That scrutiny comes as the legacy media speculated that Talarico could sway Christian voters who ordinarily vote Republican.
On the 2024 podcast, Talarico celebrated Bhojani’s election as the “true fruition of multi-racial, multicultural, multi-religious democracy” and “a threat to those who don&#8217;t believe in a pluralistic democracy” and “those who are pushing a sectarian exclusive Christian nationalist vision for our country.” He also said that “Texas is proud to be the home of more Muslim Americans than any other state in the union” and that advocating for the Ten Commandments to be displayed in classrooms was “deeply unchristian.”
The creep of Islamic ideology into Texas has been a hot issue over the last few years, with Governor Greg Abbott <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/not-welcome-in-our-state-texas-governor-designates-radical-muslim-groups-as-foreign-terrorists">designating</a> the Council on American-Islamic Relations as a foreign terrorist organization in November 2025. Abbott accused CAIR of attempting to impose Sharia law on the Lone Star State. State officials have also <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/texas-says-its-halted-construction-of-muslim-centered-epic-city-outside-dallas">moved</a> to challenge planned Islamic cities, keep schools promoting Sharia law from <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/texas-bans-schools-tied-to-americas-adversaries-from-education-freedom-program">receiving</a> state dollars, and <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/one-of-americas-most-iconic-symbols-now-islamic-the-new-history-fight">pushed</a> backs on efforts to brand the Alamo as an “Islamic building.” 
Talarico, who <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/the-audio-thats-blowing-a-hole-in-talaricos-christian-persona">describes</a> himself as a “Christian who hates Christianity,” has said he believes God is “nonbinary” and that Jesus was a “radical feminist.” During a recent commencement speech at Paul Quinn College, Talarico appeared indifferent to whether people believed in God or attended church. 
“I&#8217;m not asking you to join an organized religion. I&#8217;m asking you to join something bigger than yourself. Find a spiritual practice that works for you, whether it&#8217;s meditation or fasting, gardening, or bird watching, whether it&#8217;s in a church, or a temple, or a book club, or a neighborhood group, find a community that can help you touch the ground of your own being.”

Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo was arrested in Milwaukee on Thursday night for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. 
Romo, who is now the NFL on CBS lead game analyst, was arrested after his first offense of Operating While Intoxicated (OWI) — Wisconsin&#8217;s term for a DUI. Romo was stopped by officers while driving on southbound Interstate 43 on a bridge, and failed the field sobriety tests, Fox6 News <a href="https://www.fox6now.com/news/tony-romo-arrested-milwaukee-owi-1st-court-date-set">reported</a>. He has since been released.
Romo&#8217;s court date is scheduled for September 21.
Wisconsin usually lists the first-offense OWI as a civil charge that carries a fine from $150 to $300, and it is not a criminal charge, ABC&#8217;s Milwaukee affiliate WISN <a href="https://www.wisn.com/article/tony-romo-arrested-in-milwaukee-on-suspicion-of-dui/73256530">reported</a>.
Romo&#8217;s rise in the NFL was an underdog <a href="https://www.dallascowboys.com/news/tony-romo-s-stats-at-a-glance-where-does-he-rank-among-the-greats-430041">story</a>, going from an undrafted free agent to a star quarterback that <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/5209/tony-romo">broke</a> the Dallas Cowboys’ records for passing yards (34,183) and passing touchdowns (248). 
Romo was selected to the Pro Bowl four times and is now part of CBS’ lead NFL broadcast team. 
After retiring from playing football, Romo became CBS&#8217; lead game analyst, calling NFL games alongside Jim Nantz since 2017.

Measles, the world’s most infectious disease once declared eliminated, has made a comeback in the United States, ravaging states such as South Carolina, Florida, Utah, Virginia and Texas.
Multiple outbreaks occurred over the past year across the United States, costing millions in taxpayer money. South Carolina has<a href="https://www.cdc.gov/measles/data-research/index.html"> suffered</a> through 670 cases this year. Virginia has <a href="https://www.vdh.virginia.gov/measles/">reported</a> 176 confirmed cases and eight hospitalizations, and the Texas Department of State Health Services has <a href="https://www.dshs.texas.gov/vaccine-preventable-diseases/vaccine-preventable-disease-conditions/measles-rubeola/measles-rubeola/measles-rubeola-data">reported</a> a total of 182 cases as of July 15.
The airborne virus is notorious for spreading rapidly. Nine out of 10 people who come into close contact with a person infected with measles can come down with the illness if they are not protected, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/measles/about/index.html">reports</a>. This makes the disease about five to six times more contagious than the common cold.
Three to four million Americans contracted the disease every year in the 1950s and 60s. However, Health officials declared measles eliminated in 2000 after 12 consecutive months without endemic transmission. 
However, resistance to taking vaccines has grown over the years. This is partly due to people refusing vaccines produced using cell lines originally derived from aborted fetal tissue obtained in the 1960s — <a href="https://www.chop.edu/vaccine-education-center/vaccine-safety/vaccine-ingredients/fetal-tissues">such as</a> the rubella vaccine in the Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) vaccine. Additionally, <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10224336/">studies</a> have found that many parents remain concerned about a possible link between vaccines and autism.
As fewer people take the measles vaccine, more cases are popping up in the United States. Johns Hopkins University, which manages a <a href="https://publichealth.jhu.edu/ivac/resources/us-measles-tracker">tracker</a> for measles cases, reports that the number of cases for 2026 has reached 2,295 — the highest number of cases since 1991
“This is not simply the return of a childhood rash illness,” epidemiologist Dr. Syra Madad <a href="https://nypost.com/2026/07/22/health/us-hits-most-cases-of-worlds-most-contagious-disease-in-35-years/">told</a> the New York Post. “Measles can cause pneumonia, encephalitis, hospitalization and death, especially in young children and medically vulnerable people.”
Measles can also create the condition called subacute sclerosing panencephalitis. This is a fatal neurological condition that causes inflammation and scarring of the brain, the National Institutes of Health <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK560673/">reports</a>. This condition can take up to 20 years after a measles infection to develop. 
Prominent health officials in the Trump administration have called on all Americans to take the measles vaccine, especially after the 2025 measles outbreak.
Dr. Mehmet Oz, Trump’s administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, <a href="https://nypost.com/2026/02/09/us-news/measles-outbreak-surges-in-us-as-dr-oz-begs-people-to-get-vaccinated/">told</a> Americans to “take the vaccine, please.”
“Not all illnesses are equally dangerous and not all people are equally susceptible to those illnesses,” Oz said on CNN&#8217;s “State of the Union.” “But measles is one you should get your vaccine [for].”
Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who is known for being skeptical about the benefit of modern vaccines rolled out by Big Pharma, has urged parents to consult their doctors about vaccinating their children.
“The measles outbreak in Texas is a call to action for all of us to reaffirm our commitment to public health,” Kennedy <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/opinion/robert-f-kennedy-jr-measles-outbreak-call-action-all-us?title=op-ed%20for%20Fox%20News">said</a> in an opinion piece last year. “By working together — parents, healthcare providers, community leaders, and government officials, we can prevent future outbreaks and protect the health of our nation.” 
“Vaccines not only protect individual children from measles, but also contribute to community immunity, protecting those who are unable to be vaccinated due to medical reasons,” Kennedy added.

Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico is facing a growing revolt from black activists who are threatening to tank his campaign over what they describe as his failure to engage black voters and organizations following the perceived snubbing of Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX).
The backlash has grown so intense that at least one elected Texas Democrat has already predicted Talarico will lose. 
“Do I think that Talarico&#8217;s refusal thus far to engage black electeds and the black infrastructure has put him at a disadvantage? Absolutely, because there&#8217;s not a lot of time to try to rally us,” Texas State Rep. Jolanda Jones, a Democrat, <a href="https://x.com/BreitbartNews/status/2074908934507233660?s=20">warned in a recent interview.</a> 
&#8220;Talarico needs to pay for us to get our voters out. Only then does Talarico have a chance to win,” Jones said. “If he continues to do what he has been doing, I believe Talarico is going to lose.” 
Talarico, who has sparked backlash for his <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/this-book-is-gay-read-the-sexually-explicit-volumes-james-talaricos-church-gives-kids">fringe views on Christianity</a>, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/watch-james-talarico-says-he-loves-trans-children-in-unearthed-clip">affection for transgender children</a>, and <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/the-audio-thats-blowing-a-hole-in-talaricos-christian-persona">disdain for the American flag</a>, is seeking to defeat Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in one of the nation&#8217;s most culturally conservative states.
To win the Senate seat, Talarico will need overwhelming support from minority voters, including higher-than-expected black turnout in the state&#8217;s urban centers. During the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2026/us/elections/results-texas-primary.html">contentious March primary,</a> Crockett, who is black, outperformed Talarico in many of those areas, including Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, and much of East Texas.
Months later, black voters across the Lone Star State say the Senate hopeful has failed to inspire their communities. 
&#8220;Talarico is giving out money to white GOTV organizations and white infrastructure and Hispanic infrastructure, but he&#8217;s not giving it to black infrastructure,” Jones said. “We don&#8217;t want no white pollsters. They don&#8217;t know how to poll us. And for the most part, I&#8217;ve told them it takes money to get the vote out.”
&#8220;Talarico and everybody statewide in the Democratic Party has a black problem, whether they acknowledge it or not,&#8221; Jones added. &#8220;And inspiration is not going to get us to the polls.&#8221;
Those frustrations <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/james-talarico-stammers-as-black-woman-berates-him-for-not-answering-questions-at-event">boiled over</a> during a recent campaign event when Houston activist Kandice Webber called out Talarico as he prepared to leave, warning his campaign would “suffer the consequences” if he failed to answer questions from those in attendance.
“So you stay here! You answer our questions, or you suffer the consequences,” <a href="https://forgeorganizing.org/author/kandice-webber/">Webber</a> shouted.
“I’m happy to engage,” Talarico, clearly taken aback, responded.
“I did it for my people, not for you,” Webber said, prompting applause from around the room.
“And that’s wonderful,” Talarico replied. “I think that’s wonderful.”
As the crowd began to murmur, Talarico continued, “It’s all right. It’s all right, that’s what this conversation is supposed to be about.”
On the campaign trail, Talarico has attempted to stop the bleeding, <a href="https://x.com/RNCResearch/status/2079393406493630503?s=20">blasting law enforcement</a> and <a href="https://x.com/realDailyWire/status/2080025545228619991?s=20">expressing support</a> for reparations.
Those efforts have not moved the needle for Webber, who took to social media after the viral town hall outburst to attack the Senate hopeful in a profanity-laced rant. 
“But for us, real black folks, everyday black people, we&#8217;re gonna sit this sh*t out. We&#8217;re gonna undervote your *ss James Talarico,” she said in a <a href="https://x.com/suburbanwinebro/status/2079050913340072159?s=20">viral social media video.</a> 
Webber argued that electing Paxton to the U.S. Senate would ultimately be a better strategic outcome for black voters than backing another white Democratic nominee. 
“But what I will not have you do is try to instill your great white hope in my motherf*cking people and watch you let us down,” she said. “So maybe when 2028 rolls around, you will know, black Texas voters, we ain&#8217;t f*cking playing with you. Yeah, that white boy should have stayed where the f*ck he was.”
