A top House Republican mapped out on Sunday how lawmakers plan to proceed with articles of impeachment early next year against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas relating to his handling of the border crisis.

Homeland Security Chairman Mark Green (R-TN) told Fox News anchor Maria Bartiromo on “Sunday Morning Futures” that his panel is poised to hold a series of hearings when Congress returns from the end-of-the-year holiday break.

Mayorkas “needs to go,” Green said, adding, “He’s derelict in his duty. He’s broken the laws of the United States that have passed Congress. He’s lied to Congress.”

The chairman emphasized how his committee has been taking a methodical approach to its investigation, which was announced in early June, conducting a balancing act dealing with some GOP members who want “regular order” in pursuing Mayorkas’ ouster and other Republican colleagues who have called for a vote on impeaching the secretary right away.

“We’re going to have about three or four hearings in January, and then we’re going to mark up the impeachment articles that have been written,” Green said.

Just last month, eight Republicans joined with all voting Democrats earlier this month to approve a motion to refer Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s (R-GA) impeachment resolution, which accused Mayorkas of “high crimes and misdemeanors” over his failure to maintain border security, to the homeland security panel.

“There are probably about four or five different members who’ve brought impeachment articles, really rushing the thing to the floor without a due process,” Green said. “And that’s why I think many of those eight voted no. And I have spoken to all eight. Most of them just want a due process to happen. And we have been doing that now for several months. That investigation wraps up this month, and then we will do a proceeding in January.”

Democrats have decried the impeachment push as a “political stunt,” even as they encourage talks about border security and immigration reforms. And in defending Mayorkas, the Department of Homeland Security has derided what a spokesperson called “reckless impeachment charades” by congressional Republicans.

Asked whether House Republicans will move to impeach Mayorkas in January, Green noted how Democrats were the ones to offer the motion to refer Greene’s impeachment resolution to his committee — as opposed to presenting a motion to table or kill the resolution that may not have gained any GOP support. “So it gives our committee the authority to do just that,” Green said.
