Comedian Jo Koy blamed his writers for the bad jokes he made while hosting the 81st Golden Globes ceremony Sunday night.
The 52-year-old Comedy Central mainstay was announced as a last-minute host after several other celebrities turned the gig down. Koy, whose real name is Joseph Glenn Herbert, also said the short prep time was one of the reasons his monologue didn’t land.
“The minute I signed the contract… I locked myself in a room and started binge-watching everything. While my family was clinking champagne glasses and ringing in the New Year, my family was watching ‘Oppenheimer,’” Koy said from the stage, per Rolling Stone.
“I loved ‘Oppenheimer.’ I just got one complaint: [It] needed another hour, because I felt like it needed some more backstory. My New Year’s resolution for 2024 is to finish Oppenheimer in 2025. I love Oppenheimer — especially the first season.”
The camera cut to the film’s director, Christopher Nolan, looking unamused, which prompted Koy to say, “That’s so stupid.”
The jokes didn’t get any better as the Golden Globes host compared two of the biggest films of the summer blockbuster season, which were both up for awards on Sunday.
“‘Oppenheimer’ and ‘Barbie’ are competing for cinematic box office achievement,” Koy said. “‘Oppenheimer’ is based on a 724-page Pulitzer Prize-winning book about the Manhattan Project, and ‘Barbie’ is based on a plastic doll with big boobies.”
This line received audible boos from the audience, the outlet noted.
Koy added, “The key moment in Barbie is when she goes from perfect beauty to bad breath, cellulite, and flat feet — or what casting directors call ‘character actor.’”
That’s when the comedian blamed the lackluster jokes on his writing team.
“Some I wrote, some other people wrote,” Koy said in his own defense. “Yo, I got the gig ten days ago! You want a perfect monologue? Shut up! You’re kidding me, right? I wrote some of these, and they’re the ones you’re laughing at.”
Taylor Swift also didn’t look happy about getting roasted by Koy. “The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL? On the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift… there’s just more to go to here,” he quipped.
The coverage cut to Swift making a face and taking a sip of her drink.
