Hillary Clinton ally David Brock, founder of left-wing media watchdog group Media Matters, has again openly offered cash for Donald Trump’s tax returns.
On Tuesday night, the issue of Trump’s mysterious tax returns were once again in the limelight when MSNBC host Rachel Maddow hyped up her big reveal of (two pages) of Trump’s 2005 tax returns showing that he paid around $38 million in taxes and made over $150 million in income that year.
Though Maddow’s overhyped report was yet another “yuge black eye” for the media — exposing two of the media’s false narratives about Trump: 1) that he is not really that rich and 2) that he didn’t pay any taxes for two decades — the opportunistic Brock was undeterred and used the moment to make his cash offer again.
“More questions than answers tonight. I’m offering a $5m reward to anyone with Trump’s complete, legally obtained tax returns,” tweeted Brock.
The response from Team Trump to Maddow’s big story has been rather entertaining. Clearly, the 2005 numbers are not playing out quite how MSNBC imagined.
Below is the rather hilarious statement the White House issued shortly after Maddow’s tweet announcing that she was going to present his tax returns on her 9 p.m. show:
You know you are desperate for ratings when you are willing to violate the law to push a story about two pages of tax returns from over a decade ago. Before being elected President, Mr. Trump was one of the most successful businessmen in the world with a responsibility to his company, his family and his employees to pay no more tax than legally required. That being said, Mr. Trump paid $38 million dollars even after taking into account large scale depreciation for construction, on an income of more than $150 million dollars, as well as paying tens of millions of dollars in other taxes such as sales and excise taxes and employment taxes and this illegally published return proves just that. Despite this substantial income figure and tax paid, it is totally illegal to steal and publish tax returns. The dishonest media can continue to make this part of their agenda, while the President will focus on his, which includes tax reform that will benefit all Americans.
After Maddow’s nothingburger reveal, Donald Trump Jr. thanked her personally Tuesday night for proving to her “#Trump hating followers” that Trump has paid so much in taxes.
Maddow and company’s embarrassing misfire is actually working out to Trump’s advantage so much that some are floating the theory that the source of the leaked 2005 document is Trump himself.
