On Sunday, at the Tony Awards, which are supposed to honor excellence in theater, actor Robert De Niro, who fancies himself Someone Important, decided to ignore acting like an adult and throw a temper tantrum that he was sure would elicit love and adulation from the Notoriously Adult Theater World.
De Niro, Mr. Famous High School Dropout and Noted Cerebral Intellect, displayed his erudite knowledge of politics, utter command of the most sophisticated verbiage from his personal lexicon and well-deserved reputation as a man of class and gentility by marching on stage to applause, then leaning into the microphone and bellowing, “I’m gonna say one thing: “F*** Trump.”
Hearkening back to his days of yore when he won the Oscar for “Raging Bull,” De Niro raised his fists in the age-old tradition of a winning fighter, as the crowd screamed its approval and rose to their feet to give the Einstein Of Our Time a standing ovation.
Inspired by his unanimous approbation, De Niro called out, “It’s no longer ‘Down with Trump,” it’s “F*** Trump!” That triggered another surge of cheering.
Let’s count some of the myriad ways De Niro has vented his spleen regarding Trump:
Telling The Hollywood Reporter, “I feel like I did after 9/11,” after Trump was elected.
Calling Trump an “idiot.”
Blustering at the Annual Hudson River Park Gala “”F*** you, Donald Trump. It’s a horror with this mother***er.”
Pontificating at The National Board of Review Annual awards, “It’s The Emperor’s New Clothes — the guy is a f***ing fool.”
Opining that Trump “lacks any sense of humanity or compassion.”
But Sunday De Niro plunged to a new nadir, as his brief rant was broadcast internationally.
And the Tony Awards audience that has been careening leftward with a vengeance for decades lapped it up.
