House Accountability and Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R-KY) pressed special counsel Robert Hur for answers over his investigation into President Joe Biden’s handling of classified documents before he became president.
Comer sent a letter to Hur on Monday saying that the committee needed information from his office to “further” their own corruption investigation into Biden and his family. Hur, who was appointed special counsel in January, reportedly interviewed Biden earlier this month over the scandal.
“The Committee has developed significant evidence regarding President Biden’s retention of classified materials at Penn Biden Center. Witness testimony, emails, and text messages establish there were at least five current and former White House employees who coordinated accessing boxes, which contained classified documents, between 2021 and October 2022,” Comer wrote. “The Committee is concerned as to why President Biden has not been fully transparent about the White House’s involvement in accessing these materials prior to November 2, 2022.”
Comer added that the House, where an impeachment inquiry has been opened looking at Biden, needed any information that might link Biden’s handling of classified documents and the countries where the Biden family had financial ties.
“The Committee is concerned that President Biden may have retained sensitive documents related to specific countries involving his family’s foreign business,” Comer wrote, referencing Biden family business and business associates ties to China, Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and Romania.
“President Biden’s retention of certain classified documents begs the question as to why he kept these particular materials. Of the many classified documents he reviewed over his lengthy career, why did President Biden keep these specific documents in his home and office?” the letter said.
Federal officials have reportedly interviewed approximately 100 witnesses in their criminal investigation into Biden’s handling of classified material while he was vice president in the Obama administration and while he was a U.S. Senator for the state of Delaware.

Unlike former President Donald Trump, Biden has yet to face any potential charges over his handling of classified documents.
Trump is accused of storing information regarding defense and weapons capabilities of both the United States and foreign countries; United States nuclear programs; potential vulnerabilities of the United States and its allies to military attack; and plans for possible retaliation in response to a foreign attack.
Trump has denied any wrongdoing, saying that the prosecution is politically motivated.
