The cause of death for Irish musician Sinéad O’Connor has been revealed.
The “Nothing Compares To U” singer, who was 56 at the time of her passing, died in July 2023 of natural causes. This information came from a statement from the London Inner South Coroner’s Court released on Tuesday, per Entertainment Weekly.
“This is to confirm that Ms. O’Connor died of natural causes. The coroner has therefore ceased their involvement in her death,” the London Inner South Coroner’s Court Clerk said in an email statement, adding that “no further comments will be made” on the matter.
O’Connor’s family released a statement shortly after the news of her passing was made public, saying, “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.”
Police said at the time that the singer’s death was not being treated as suspicious.
One week before her passing, O’Connor shared a photo of her late son in a since-deleted tweet, saying, “Been living as undead night creature since. He was the love of my life, the lamp of my soul. We were one soul in two halves. He was the only person who ever loved me unconditionally. I am lost in the Bardo without him.”
The Irish singer was discovered dead just 18 months after her son, Shane, died by suicide at the age of 17. O’Connor was briefly hospitalized after Shane’s death. She shared several social media posts that alarmed her fans, including one message saying, “There is no point to living without him.”

Even before Shane’s death, O’Connor admitted to struggling with her mental health and said she was verbally and physically abused by her mother. The songwriter and activist also opened up to fans about being diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
O’Connor had her biggest studio album hit in 1990 with the release of “I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got,” which included her best-known single “Nothing Compares 2 U.” She was also a passionate activist for various causes and made headlines during a Saturday Night Live appearance in 1992 when she tore up a photograph of Pope John Paul II as a statement on the sexual abuse scandal in the Catholic Church.
